stgraberogra_cmpc: Did you have a look at italc_1.0.7-0ubuntu2 ?10:23
ogra_cmpcstgraber, preparing an upload now, i was afk for the last four days10:25
stgraberogra_cmpc: I'm also working on rewritting the ica-launcher and italc-launcher to use avahi for computers detection10:26
ulysee798Newbie question, I have Edubuntu 7.10 and Capio 5 thin client. I am booting with PXE and I see the boot screen with Edubuntu loading on the Capio but then just get a command prompt not a login page. Anyone help?10:26
stgraberogra_cmpc: that way we'll have automatically generated classroom for both LTSP and standard workstation environement10:26
ogra_cmpccool10:30
ogra_cmpculysee798, do you know what kind of graphics card these devices have ?10:31
ulysee798ogra_cmpc, graphics is onboard. I have opened one up but can't see any identifying chips other that the realtek Lan and a Winbond chip10:34
ogra_cmpculysee798, create an /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf file10:56
ogra_cmpcput in the following lines:10:57
ogra_cmpc[default]10:57
ogra_cmpcSCREEN_02=shell10:57
ogra_cmpcSCREEN_07=ldm10:57
ogra_cmpcif you then boot a client you have a shell on console 210:57
ogra_cmpcthat gives you access to tools like lspci to find out about the VGA controller etc10:58
ulysee798ogra_cmpc, OK will do. Do I have to log in to chroot and do it from a terminal or can I use gedit from the desktop?11:00
ogra_cmpcyou have to boot a terminal after adding that file and hit alt-f2 at the running client11:01
ulysee798ogra_cmpc, Ok will try that and see what info I can glean from it. thnx11:03
ulysee798ogra_cmpc, after reboot at the root@ltsp:/# prompt lspci returns a SiS 550 graphics chipset - during the boot there were lots of messages of failed module etc.11:27
ulysee798ogra_cmpc, many thanks for your help - I deleted SCREEN_02=shell and SCREEN_07=ldm and replaced with XSERVER="vesa" and now the boot splash appears and I can login. Is there anything else the lst.conf needs for sound etc on a sis chipset?11:55
ogra_cmpcif you have a sis 7019 there is no way to make it work with modern kernels yet ... sis didnt release any specs and the old oss driver doesnt really work (choppy sound if you move the mouse etc)11:56
ogra_cmpcoh, and that oss driver isnt licensed anyhow so it might not even be legal to make it work even if you manage to patch it to compile with newer kernels11:57

LaserJockogra_cmpc: I'm getting set to do all my edubuntu stuff this morning17:03
LaserJockI grabbed the edubuntu-docs translations and will get that uploaded17:03
LaserJockthe squeak stuff is just messy. I've gotten 0 response from the main maintainer17:03
LaserJockbut I think I got a decent solution for Hardy17:03
ogra_cmpcas long as you get it past pitti :)17:04
LaserJockwell17:05
LaserJocksince Debian is using squeak-vm as the source package name I don't need to go through source NEW ;-)17:05
ogra_cmpcright *g*17:06
LaserJockI used the debian/copyright from our old package17:06
ogra_cmpcevil guy you :)17:06
LaserJocksince it's the exact same licensing files, etc. in the newer package17:06
LaserJockso we can't be any worse than our current package17:06
LaserJockand I think it's better really17:06
LaserJockthere's no way that thing is GPL17:06
ogra_cmpci dont actually think anyone ever cared about squeak licensing ever ... apart from distributorsx17:07
LaserJockas Matej and Lex were claiming17:07
LaserJockthe new one is very nice though, MIT and fairly well documented17:07
ogra_cmpcneither apple (who own parts) nor upstream ...17:07
LaserJockbut it just doesn't seem to work very well17:07
ogra_cmpcwell, SVN you said17:08
LaserJockyeah17:08
LaserJockit's not released17:08
LaserJockbut when I asked the author he seemed to not remember the GPL/Squeak-L thing17:08
LaserJockso whatever17:08
LaserJockbut I did the work to register the squeak Firefox plugin with the Ubuntuized browsers17:09
LaserJockso that it'll hopefully show up in the automatic plugin installer17:10
ogra_cmpcwoah17:10
* ogra_cmpc is impressed17:10
LaserJockasac helped me out17:10
LaserJockI did quite a bit of work on these packages17:10
LaserJockI'd rather not throw them away17:10
ogra_cmpcyeah17:10
LaserJockthey also added a binfmt thingy17:12
LaserJockso that supposedly a person can click on a squeak image and it'll open up in the VM17:12
ogra_cmpcnice17:12
LaserJockthe Debian package just dies if you try to run it with some bash error17:12
ogra_cmpcOLPC is doing good for squeak users it seems17:12
LaserJockyeah17:13
LaserJockI think that was probably a big push for the licensing17:13
gvyhalo17:53
gvyogra_cmpc, ayt?17:53
ogra_cmpcgvy, i am, but extremely busy, i was planning to come to #ltsp later tonight and write a mail as well if i have time ... sorry for that harsh reaction, it was a bit over the top17:56
gvyogra_cmpc, please forgive me17:56
ogra_cmpcsubmit your code :)17:56
gvy~50% done :)17:56
ogra_cmpcyay :)17:56
gvynow reworking the patch part17:56
gvyogra_cmpc, vagrantc and warren decided to help merging it, vagrantc has a hard time talking to me w/o you17:57
ogra_cmpcseriously, i had a bad day and you just were the person to mention it once to much the apology has to come from my side ...17:57
ogra_cmpci'll be back, i just need to sort out a lot work stuff that stacked up over easter17:58
gvyogra_cmpc, i knew it upon reading the replies -- been in your shoes :(17:58
gvyyup, thanks!17:58
ogra_cmpc:)17:58
ogra_cmpceven scottie called me last night ... i didnt want to cause so much fuss17:59
ogra_cmpcgvy, thanks for the #, noted down (unregistered user here, cant reply to PM)18:00

cliebow_cliebow does likewise!18:22
* ogra_cmpc hugs everyone back :)18:23
ogra_cmpcthanks guys :)18:23

LaserJockogra_cmpc: \o/ !! I got squeak working on amd6419:04
ogra_cmpcyay19:05
LaserJockthe plugin seems to crash firefox on amd64 though19:08
LaserJockbut I think it works on i38619:08
LaserJockthe plugin stuff is a bit sketchy19:08
LaserJockbuilt for old netscape browsers19:09
ogra_cmpctried it in a 32bit env for firefox on the amd64 machine ?19:10
ogra_cmpci.e. lib32 and nspluginwrapper19:11
LaserJockI'll try it real quick19:12
LaserJockI do happen to have a 32bit firefox19:12
calimerheya LaserJock19:15
LaserJockhi19:16
calimerremember how we talked about platinum arts sandbox a while ago?19:16
calimerwell I'm working on a version where all the content is "debian free"19:16
LaserJockyeah19:17
calimerand it is called Lite I have a person who is interested in maintaining the deb package (she asked actually if you'd be interested in being a comaintainer)19:17
calimerand well it should be all set soon, I actually am sending her a test package for it19:17
calimerI just wanted to communicate to you about the Lite version since we haven't talked in a bit, and its status19:18
LaserJockyeah19:20
LaserJockwell, unfortunately I'm really busy with my dissertation19:20
LaserJockI don't think I could comaintain it19:20
calimerwow congrats on being at that level19:20
calimerand no worries she just wanted me to ask19:21
LaserJockbut I could give advice and help were I could19:21
calimerawesome, yeah every bit helps19:21
calimerthat's how things get improved19:21
LaserJockbbiab19:21
LaserJockbdoin: what's the current gcompris version?20:10
bdoinLatest stable is 8.4.420:18
bdoinwhy ?20:18
LaserJockwe have 8.4.2 in Hardy20:20
bdoinLaserJock: not too bad probably but for sure 8.4.4 is better.20:22
LaserJockare there any specific bug fixes we could backport to 8.4.2?20:23
bdoinwhy backport ?20:23
LaserJockright now we are pretty far along to request a whole new upstream version20:23
bdoinyou can read the ChangeLog in trunk, it's well maintained and accurate20:24
bdointhe most important is that there is 2 crash cases that where identified and fixed20:26
bdoinThis one is a must : "Fixed many potential crash of GCompris in the key_press activity callback. A crash has be verified in gletters (falling letters) if you enter a key while the bonus is displayed. (commit 3138)"20:26
LaserJockok, let me try to get  8.4.4 in20:29
LaserJockI don't know if it'll be accepted but I'll give it a shot20:30
bdointhere is also a new voice set (urdu)20:31
lnsDoes anyone know how to globally set the firefox homepage for all users?21:03
blue-frog__lns: the page is in .mozilla/firefox/profile/pref.js21:09
lnsblue-frog__, that doesn't help me for all users...21:13
lnsthanks though21:13
blue-frog__lns: you change this file and you put what you want for start up page21:14
blue-frog__as for new user, you put this file in /etc/skel so that new user will have it directly21:15
lnsblue-frog__, let me reform my question21:15
lnsi want to be able to have a mandatory default homepage of google.com for all of my existing users21:15
lnsi have ~200 existing users on my server21:16
blue-frog__lns a script with find , for loop and sed would change this file for your user quite quickly21:19
lnsI guess that might be the only way21:20
lnsi saw this bug, looks like the 'real' way is broken in gutsy21:20
lnshttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1903321:20
ubotuLaunchpad bug 19033 in firefox "systemwide default startup homepage ignored" [Medium,Confirmed]21:20
blue-frog__dunno if it's the only way but it won't take long to do21:20
lnsty blue-frog__21:22
blue-frog__but then the problem with that is they can change it to what they want21:22
blue-frog__did you read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FirefoxMandatoryPreferences21:23
lnsblue-frog__, yes21:24
lnsthat didn't work for me at all21:25
lnsoh i didn't install obscure-tool or whatever that is21:25
blue-frog__having a look at it now...21:25
lnseww..firefox-dev21:26
lnsdon't really want to install that on production server21:26
lnsin addition to that, prefs in /usr/lib/firefox will be overwritten upon upgrades21:28
lnsit's supposed to look in /etc/firefox/* but the above mentioned bug causes it not to21:28
lns:( i find there are many global-configuration tools missing from *buntu..i wish i had the resources to hire a programmer to fill in the gaps21:29
blue-frog__lns the firefox.cfg lockdown works perfectly...21:47
lnsblue-frog__, i'm sure it does, but i don't feel comfortable installing firefox-dev for production use21:53
lagalns: why?21:53
lnsunless i'm misunderstanding the concept of -dev packages21:53
laga This package contains the development headers, idl files and static libraries21:53
laga needed to develop applications using Mozilla Firefox.21:53
lnslaga, oooh wait those are just EXTRAS, it doesn't replace the firefox package installed right?21:54
lagayeah, basically21:54
lnsgotcah21:54
lnsdamn, and i just got done writing my script =p21:54
lnscool, thanks21:54
LaserJockogra_cmpc: squeak uploaded21:55
lnslaga, blue-frog__, now we still have the issue of firefox.cfg being overwritten when upgrading FF21:56
lnsbut i guess it's not that big of a deal21:56
lnsconsidering it's nice that the user can't change their home dir (even though i could just chmod their user.js)21:56
blue-frog__lns don't think it will be without asking you21:56
lnsblue-frog__, i remember debian always asked about config files, ubuntu seems to just replace (and possibly back up originals)21:57
lnswhen upgrading21:57
lnscool, the mandatoryprefs work nice22:03
lnsty laga and blue-frog__22:03
blue-frog__lns: they can bypass it if they edit their launcher and add a page at the end of the command though...22:03
lnsblue-frog__, well i already have the panels locked down22:04
blue-frog__:)22:04
lns;)22:04
lnsi did find a way to "bypass" the mandatory homepage by setting preferences to start with a blank page instead22:04
blue-frog__lns: how do you do that by the way, pls?22:04
lnslocking down panels?22:05
blue-frog__i mean panels lock22:05
lnshere22:05
lnshttp://lns.wikidot.com/gconf22:05
lnsi haven't finished all of the content but this should get you started22:06
blue-frog__ty22:06
lnsyw!22:07
lnsk - if anyone read this conversation and wants a simple method for setting mandatory homepage for all users on a system, look here: http://lns.wikidot.com/firefoxmandatoryhomepage22:19
crazy_busI just got given a computer that has 140mb's of ram.  So it probably won't run the regular install.  Is there an install cd that can install on low memory systems?23:27
LaserJockyou might try xubuntu or fluxbuntu23:29
crazy_busok.  I'll try that and install educational packages on top of that23:30
LaserJockprobably the way to go23:33
