jnkI honestly don't know, I haven't seen any commands or attempts to upgrade provide any feedback to indicate it has actually done any upgrading00:00
jnkactually, you know what, I used wubi to install this today, it probably picked up the beta00:01
flipstarhm mplayer was updated today.. jnk run apt-cache policy mplayer00:01
jnkso all this is for not haha00:01
jnkthe version returned from that matche that of the website00:03
flipstarinfo mplayer hardy | it should be this00:03
flipstar!info mplayer hardy | it should be this00:03
ubotuit should be this: mplayer (source: mplayer): The Ultimate Movie Player For Linux. In component multiverse, is extra. Version 2:1.0~rc2-0ubuntu11 (hardy), package size 4244 kB, installed size 9892 kB00:03
ere4sitime for a hard reset again....00:04
jnkwell, mine's not installed, but the version returned is that00:04
* cuznt 's integrated sound card makes horrid tin scraping noises when atemptin to record through the input00:04
jnkso, I'll conclude I already have the latest version and that I just wasted all of your all's time :)00:06
jnkbut I do appreciate the assistance, I come from bsd so I'm just learning the linux methods of doing things00:07
Daisuke_Idocuznt, that's actually the sound of the demons trapped in your computer that are forced to relay ones and zeroes between components00:08

Apple_Cat_Hi i think I'm having a problem with dns, though I don't know why, or how. If I try nslookup on myself it returns ** server can't find 1.0.0.127.in-addr.arpa: NXDOMAIN00:20
flipstarApple_Cat_: did you changed something special since this appeared ?00:24
Apple_Cat_nope, the only only thing I can think of is installing virtual box00:24

jimmy51howdy.  how can i re-initialize video hardware detection and setup (i just replaced my graphics card and now it's booting to console) ?00:29
Dr_willis_jimmy51,  what video card you have now? what was it befor?00:29
jimmy51Dr_willis_: it was a mobo integrated video, now it's an nvidia PCI card00:30
flipstarApple_Cat_: *guessing* maybe vbox installed some kind of dns server for local vm's00:30
Dr_willis_jimmy51,  to get X back, you could edit the xorg.conf and change the 'Driver 'whatever'' line to 'Driver 'nv''00:30
Dr_willis_or ya can manually install the nvidia drivers.  following the !nvidia factoid page00:31
Dr_willis_!nvidia00:31

jimmy51xserver-org?00:32
flipstarsudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg -phigh :)00:32
Dr_willis_hm  Wow - tab completion works for dpkg-reconfigure on this machine.. when did that start working?00:32
Dr_willis_:)00:32
jimmy51k00:34
jimmy51do i choose "nv" for the driver type?00:34
Apple_Cat_nv is the free driver00:35
jimmy51i can enable the nonfree once i'm in kde, right?00:35
jimmy51(i mean, enable pretty easily...)00:36
Apple_Cat_yep00:36
jimmy51ok.  i think i'm going to try dpkg-configure xserver-xorg ... reconfigure is wanting to keep dealing with the onboard instead of the PCI card00:37
flipstarcant you disable the onboard card in bios ?00:38
jimmy51nope... i just get to pick which to try first00:38
jimmy51ah, gotta go00:39
jimmy51thanks for the help, i'll try again later00:39

r0dzillathe other day something changed02:22
r0dzillanormally regardless of which virtual desktop I'm on, if I move the mouse to the upper portion of the 2nd monitor the panel drops down02:23
r0dzillanow, it's only doing it for one virtual desktop02:23
r0dzillahowever,02:23
r0dzillaeven though it's not dropping down for the 2nd virtual desktop, it is displaying ballon tips for icons on the panel02:24

jack__but this time actually he did not help me with knowing how to fgorce mount that drive.03:33
jack__my kubuntu is broken right now too03:33
jack__I upgraded from feisty & now everything is all broke03:33
jack__it keeps on saying that things are 1000 when they should be 000 or something like that.03:34
blindfishhi03:35
blindfishis ist possible to reinstall the content of /boot/ ?03:35
jack__!hi03:35
ubotuHi! Welcome to #kubuntu!03:35
jack__I am not sure03:35
ere4sijack__: does this help - http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=67503:35
blindfishi just had a little ... accident ...03:36
ere4siblindfish: /boot has the initrd.img - that is important03:37
jack__ere4si yes that is the right info butI am still in trouble with my broken kubuntuy03:39
=== chagas is now known as posingaspopular
blindfishmy problem was ...03:40
blindfishi used to have an own partition for /boot/03:40
blindfishbut when i installed gutsy i decided to put all into one /03:41
ere4sijack__: did you chown or chmod anything?03:41
ere4siblindfish: I have it like that03:41
blindfishnow i wantet to remove the old /boot/ partition and resized the /03:41
blindfishseems that i didn't remember correctly03:41
blindfishand now everything in /boot is lost03:42
blindfish:(03:42
ere4siblindfish: will it boot at all?03:42
blindfishnope03:42
blindfishthe notebook ist running with a live-cd03:42
ere4siblindfish: you have removed the image that it boots with - I don't know how to overcome that...03:43
blindfishhm, then i have to reinstall gutsy? humpf :(03:44
jack__As I said I upgraded frrom fiesty to gutsy & now my computer has lost its mind & says that no one is a sudoer & also a lot of other problems03:44
BluesKajblindfish, any boot errors at all ?03:45
jack__this has happened 3 other times in the past when I have done this03:46
blindfishi don't know the exatly phrase, but grub can't find any kernel ;)03:46
jack__bliindfish you might have to do a reinstall03:47
blindfishokay, thank you03:47
aibflash that produces sound in my browser is not making it to my speakers, but mplayer works03:48
aibany tips?03:48
jack__what browser?03:49
jack__which browser?03:49
aibfirefox03:49
jack__not sure03:50
ere4sijack__: I've never upgraded kubuntu - you can get corrupted packages during d/load - did you do it over wireless?03:52
aibaib: you're problem is that you started mplayer before you started firefox. close mplayer, close firefox and then go to youtube to hear sound03:53
ere4siaib: where was that from?03:55
jack__no I did not do it over wireless03:55
aibthat was the solution to my problem..03:56
ere4siaib: where did you ask/find?03:56
aibi figured it out myself03:56
jack__& no that one page did not fix my problem03:57
ere4sijack__: done a mem check lately?03:57
jack__it was a currut install but it does it every time I upgrade from feisty to gutsy, I have heard others say the same.03:57
jack__So it isn't just me03:58
jack__I don't need to check my system, my system is crap & all ubuntu knows it. I shouldn't even be running guis03:59
beeneris there some one here who know the ins and outs of konversation or if theres a channle for it03:59
beenernvm found the channle03:59
jack__i am on a machine with 91Mbs ram03:59
ere4sijack__: I have a sep /home partition and always reinstall - only takes 2hrs as I keep a file of the changes I make03:59
blindfishthanks for your help again (even if there's no hope ^^)04:00
blindfishgn8 ;)04:00
ere4sibye04:00
jack__Yes & on a machine with 91Mbs ram it takes about 20 hours to do an install.04:00
ere4sijack__: with iG it takes 20 mmin for the install here - how do you do it?04:01
ere4si1G = 1024 mb04:01
jack__with livecd it takes about 6 hours or longer04:02
kgoetz91m= 0.09G04:02
jack__yes04:02
kgoetzjack__: live cd? at least use the alternate :)04:02
jack__I did use the alt iunstall took about the same amount of time04:02
kgoetzdidnt think the live ran with <380mb of ram04:03
ere4sisorry jack__ but you run kubuntu with 91mb ram? - with just the desktop showing I use 84+ mb04:03
jack__I did an alt install of feisty then upgraded it to gutsey & that is when it whent all to hell04:03
jack__yes ere4si iot leaves me with only 1mb of ram free04:03
ere4sijack__: there isn't a *buntu that is recommended with so little ram - except maybe fluxbuntu04:04
jack__fluxbuntu is not an offical flaver04:04
ere4sino it isn't04:04
jack__I have tried fluxbuntu, & damn small, & puppy04:05
ere4siI'd try puppy on that04:05
jack__they all are not made to run well for one with that low of ram04:05
jack__haha I beet you to it :p04:05
kgoetzpuppy and dsl are designed for that much ram04:05
ere4sithese days cli is the only option for that little ram04:06
jack__nope only deli linux looks promiosing, but I can't get it to install because lilo keeps failing04:06
ere4sijack__: is more ram an option?04:06
jack__no it is not04:06
kgoetzis another system an option?04:07
jack__not unless you wish to buy it for me04:07
ere4sijack__: I use the ubuntu server install with fluxbox as a widow manager and it uses 46mb after boot04:07
ere4si*window04:08
jack__I have been talking about this on the ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu/debian ircs for the past 3 years.04:08
kgoetzjack__: i'll pass. i dont care about your computing that much04:08
jack__here it is 3 years later & still no one has been able to help me04:08
ere4sijack__: says it all really - it's you're system that is the issue - sorry04:09
jack__Yes I know04:09
ermali86hello. can anyone tell me please how to make wlassistant to run as root at the startup04:09
ere4sijack__: and as more time passes the less chance you have of using that system04:10
jack__But I don't want to use this system04:19
ere4si?04:19
jack__I just want to check to see if my external usb ntfs harddrive is okay or not.04:20
ere4sijack__: what have you tried so far?04:21
jack__installing kubuntu04:21
jack__I started the install last night at 8PM & it finished at 7PM tonight04:22
ere4sijack__: if it runs try in a konsole -   sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/filename - if sdb1 is the usb and filename is a dir you made in /media04:23
jack__it will say I do not have permission 1000 should be 000004:23
ere4siahh - the guid issues04:24
jack__yes04:24
jack__that is what I said 2 hours ago04:24
ere4siyou through me with the 91mb ram statement :)04:24
ere4si*threw04:25
jack__I would show you that I said it 1 hour ago, but kubuntu won't let me paste anything because I do not have permission04:25
jack__but I said it at 20:3404:26
jack__so hopw do I fix gujid?04:27
jack__guid04:27

jack__time stands still for me, well the world moves around me04:35
maduserok screw this whats your email?04:35
jack__Yes, do not worry whenever I get a new computer it will be linux, I have always understood that it is the computer. I have tried over 20 distros, all wonderful, just not very usable on this computer.04:36
ere4sijack__: I do sympathise :)04:36
jack__I yearn for the day that MS will go bankrupt & open source unix-like OSes rain supreme04:36

Darkrift2i spent 3 weeks last time i installed kubuntu04:40
DrJuanoi got a huge trobule with kubuntu, describing: i`ve installed an usb modem as i usually do in ubuntu, but when kde starts all the KDE`s programs doesn t understand that there is an internet connection04:40

ChameleonDaveI've been told that the Katapult maintain often hangs around here.04:53
=== ubuntu is now known as Oswal_Kovelpod
jack__ere4si: also since I have tried around 20 or more linux distros I can tell you which ones get my vote if a person has a good enough machine, first off anything that is deb based with KDE desktop ius a winner, that being said whenever I get a fast good computer I will either install on it Kubuntu or LinmuxMint KDE edition as those are the 2 distros I recomend for people who have good machines, they are really nice.04:56
Darkrift2ok, the script worked fine04:57
Darkrift2i just checked the log04:57
Darkrift2it just doesnt work like the tutorials dont work04:57
Oswal_Kovelpodjack__:  what about debian ?04:57
maduser?04:57
Darkrift2the script does everything i have been doing04:57
maduseryeah04:57
Darkrift2it just uses its own version of the drivers which i had hoped would work04:57
Darkrift2nothing failed in the script though04:57
jack__Debian is really good, I like debian a lot if you are willing to convert all your mp3s to ogg & such it is amazing04:57
maduserwhat version of Broadcom do you have?04:58
Darkrift2431104:58
ere4sijack__: I agree with the deb based point but mint is based on a distro that is based on a distro - seems convaluted imho - kde is nice tho - needs some work but04:58
Oswal_Kovelpoddebian has non-free repos did you know that ?04:58
jack__Yes I knew that Oswal, but if you are going to do that you might as well use Ubuntu or LinuxMint or another debian based distro04:59
Oswal_Kovelpodso is not necessary to convert all your music ^^04:59
kgoetzdebian has mp3 support via gstreamer in main04:59
jack__To me though debian is an amazing distro, & stable as can be, but there has been so many amazing distros based on it that add so much good things to it05:00
Oswal_Kovelpodso for you debian is now incomplete ?05:00
Oswal_Kovelpodo.005:00
jack__No for me debian is amazing, just very overly stable & a bit strict in the free ruule :p05:01
dwidmannjack__: very overly stable, if you want to fix that problem switch to sid :)05:02
Oswal_Kovelpodyeah :D05:02
jack__I have used sid, very nice, though as I said so many of the deb based distros have such nice & welcomed customizations :)05:02
jack__I prefer Etch to sid though05:03
ere4sijack__: that is the point - if a distro based on debian can do it - you can with debian05:04
ere4siand a distro based on a distro based on debian...05:05
jack__Also ere4si linuxmint is starting to test builds strictly based on debian without being based on ubuntu, also the linuxmin apps can be installed & work just fine on ubuntu & debian, so really the whole distro based on distro based on distro thing no longer applies.05:05
ere4siof course it applies jack__  :)05:06
kgoetzinteresting as i find this, perhaps it should be in -offtopic?05:06
jack__no because I got most of the linux mint apps to work on debian etch05:06
jack__yes it should be in offtopic05:06
ere4sihehe :)05:06
Jucato(definitely in -offtopic...)05:07
jack__is there a kubuntu-offtopic or will it go to ubuntu-offtopic?05:07
ere4si!ot05:07
ubotu#kubuntu is the official Kubuntu support channel, for all Kubuntu-related support questions. Please use #kubuntu-offtopic for general chatter. Thanks!05:07
jack__will you be there ere4si?05:08
ere4sijack__: going there now05:09
ChameleonDaveHello everyone.  Does anyone use Katapult here?05:10
ere4siI tried it from the menu once - got an icon on the desktop then....nothing05:11
JucatoChameleonDave: what seems to be the problem?05:11
Jucatoere4si: you're supposed to launch it with Alt+Space (after running it)05:12
ere4siahh05:12
ere4siit just went away05:12
Jucatoere4si: Alt+Space, then type something (like a program name or a play list or numbers for the calculator05:13
ChameleonDaveI recently lost my user directory (/home/david), when the partition it was on became corrupted.  When I created a new user directory, katapult no longer worked correctly.  It fails to start in fact.05:13
ChameleonDaveAll it does it announce the shortcut key to bring up the app, but the app window itself never appears, the shortcut key does nothing, and there is no katapult icon in the system tray.05:14
ere4siJucato: is that what it does? - I have things I launch in a dock - one click05:14
ChameleonDaveI want it to reside in the system tray as before.05:14
ChameleonDaveI used to start Katapult by putting it in my KDE Autostart directory.05:15
ChameleonDaveand it would then be there in my system tray, ready for use.05:15
leo_rockwkatapult wins05:15
Jucatoere4si: it's a launcher for apps (you can't have all items in your panel right? :P), amarok playlists, documents (this one's ugly), google searches, spell checking, calculator05:15
leo_rockwkatapult + yakuake = killer apps05:16
ere4siJucato: I'm flattered you think I do so much :)05:16
JucatoChameleonDave: Alt+Space, then Ctrl+C, and select Configure Katapult. then enable the system tray icon. or don't you even see the big Katapult icon when you press Alt+Space05:16
ChameleonDaveJucato: As I said, there is no icon.05:16
Jucatoere4si: I don't05:16
ere4si:(05:16
JucatoChameleonDave: the big icon/black window?05:16
ere4sihehe05:17
Oswal_Kovelpoddamn it installer just stop it -.-05:17
ChameleonDaveJucato: I know how Katapult is supposed to work.  I used it for months.  The point is that it has stopped working.05:17
dwidmannleo_rockw: yep, can't beat 'em05:17
Jucato<ere4si> Jucato: is that what it does? <-- ask a question. I answer05:17
JucatoChameleonDave: hm... can you try starting it from Konsole to see if it starts at all?05:17
ChameleonDaveJucato: When it is run, all I see is the brief message informing me of the shortcut key to use the app.  That's it.05:17
ere4siJucato: thnx05:17
ChameleonDaveJucato: I know you're trying to help, but you are being a little annoying.05:18
Jucatofine05:18
sigma_1234where does apt-get store downloaded packages?05:18
ChameleonDaveIs anyone here familiar with the nuts and bolts of Katapult, and possible conflicts that might prevent it from starting correctly?05:19
Jucatosigma_1234: /var/cache/apt/ iirc05:19
sigma_1234do they stay there forever?05:20
Jucatofwiw, that's the point of running it from Konsole... so that you can see what might be preventing it from starting correctly... but since you know so much05:20
leo_rockwsigma_1234: unless you do apt-get clean05:20
Jucatosigma_1234: they're supposed to be automatically cleaned every 30 days I think05:21
sigma_1234how can i stop the auto clean?05:21
ChameleonDaveSigma_1234: the packages are stored at /var/cache/apt/archives/05:22
ChameleonDaveSigma_1234: open Synaptic and go to Preferences to change stuff like autocleaning05:23
ChameleonDaveJucato: It's just that you were asking for information that I had already given.05:24
JucatoChameleonDave: did you give information about any error messages that might have appeared if you started it in Konsole?05:25
ChameleonDaveJucato: When I run Katapult, Konsole doesn't give me much info on what is happening.  It does however give a long list of items such as "Ignored duplicate item: Shisen-Sho"05:25
ChameleonDaveJucato: It is a long list of apps in the KDE menu, which Katapult presumably indexes.05:26
ChameleonDaveJucato: They look like they are probably apps which are duplicated in KDE3 and KDE4, both of which I have installed.05:26
ChameleonDaveJucato: There is no failure message.05:27
ChameleonDaveIt's all gone quiet...05:29
pyro17so quiet...05:31
dwidmannI can almost hear the metaphorical crickets chirping, so peaceful .... lol05:33
pyro17whats the diff between pimary and logical partition05:37
pyro17oh nm05:38
_dennisterg'evening folks...ubuntu-server channel seems to be asleep, so wondering if the night-owl-experts  in here could help me with getting phpmyadmin to show up in my new apache site05:38
_dennisterpyro17: u can only have 4 primary, untold logical partitions within an extended partition05:39
pyro17ah05:39
_dennisteractually, 'untold' should be 'big number'05:39
_dennisterpyro17: u must have one primary...i often use 2-3, then build the extended, and logical ones within the extended05:40
pyro17yea its going to be the first one on the drive05:40
_dennisterthen, if you add another hdd later, it's easy to put it's partitions into the extended as logical05:41
_dennisteru got  it05:41

Darkrift2i have vista, and the drivers vista uses dont work (they give an error about wrong format) so I have used drivers from tutorials, and lots of different ones from different laptop manuf's (even my own laptops xp drivers)06:46
ere4siDarkrift2: then the !broadcom link should get it working for you... - use xp drivers06:46
Darkrift2there is either something i am missing (another underlaying problem) or a special driver that i need that i have not found06:46
Darkrift2ive followed that one many times ere4si06:47
Darkrift2ive even followed the ones that link from that one06:47
Darkrift2and all the others on ubuntu forums that note 43xx06:47
Darkrift2ive even tried the script on ubuntu forums that supposedly does it all for you06:47
Darkrift2they all end by telling me "your wireless should now be working" and it isnt06:48
ere4siDarkrift2: I don't use any wireless - ask again in a little while when there are more folks available - sorry06:48
Darkrift2heh06:48

Darkrift2hence me trying to sweeten the deal a little06:48
Darkrift2im sure ppl in here and in #linux are tired of hearing me ask, but i REALLY dont want to stick with vista06:49

Darkrift2i have06:50

Kheopshmm so how can i do a NTFS partition ?07:32
Darkrift2i already told you07:33
Darkrift2creating a ntfs partition is NOT YOUR PROBLEM07:33

Kheopsit is in my pc and it is ext3 and i can write on it07:33
Kheops:))07:33
Darkrift2delete that partition07:33
JucatoKheops: have you tried using a GUI tool like GParted or QtParted?07:33

meeeroi'd need some help with knetworkmanager. recently i installed kubuntu for a friend, he uses wlan, some netgear-usb-device. after kubuntu was installed (and even before it worked as live-cd), knetworkmanager recognized the usb-device and searched for deviced to connect to. i selected the appropriate one and it worked. but since yesterday it does not do that any more. it doesn't search for lan-stations any more, it doesn't show any of08:55
meeero the (about 5) available ones in his building. that's a problem now because he needs internet and otherwise i'd be forced to install windows and the manufacturer's software again. i believe it happened after he accidentaly set up something with manual control, after that - even if i set it to automatic-by-dhcp, it did not try to find any devices any more08:55
meeerothe question now is how to configure knetworkconfig to behave as if it was installed for the first time - when it was searching for devices08:55
meeeroi tried to remove its config file in .kde, but that did not work, any suggestions?08:56
meeeroi'm going there in about one hour, i'll need to know what to do then, because there's not internet available08:57
klerfaytmeeero: delete the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/knetworkmanagerrc08:57
meeeroi did08:57
klerfaytmeeero: maybe it's also in /root/?08:57
meeeronothing changed08:57
meeerohm, that could be so08:57
meeerosince it uses sudo, as far as i know, since that is an administrative job08:57
meeerobut i was not asked for the user's sudo-password, it starts at system-startup and doesn't work as it did when it was installed for the first time08:58
meeeroi believe it's a bug in knetworkconfig, since it *should* search automaticaly for new devices when dhcp-automatic is set, true?08:58
meeerohe also has eth0, an internal network-device to use with a cable, but that worked neither when i configured it using knetworkconfig, i just don't get it why09:00
klerfaytmeeero: maybe this? /usr/share/apps/knetworkconf/09:00
meeeroso this seems to be a bug at all09:00
meeerois there a config-file?09:00
meeeroand what if i delete/rename that direcotry, will it be recreated?09:01
