ign0ramusa lot of people like Wubi, but i don't really know much about it00:00
nonewmsgsthe problem with linux is i keep installing stuff and downloading stuff and running out of space00:00
nonewmsgsi have nearly 640gb all nearly full00:00
terran4000o.O00:00
Pierroign0ramus the new Ubuntu uses Wubi install method(optionally) in their beta installer00:00
ign0ramuswhat the hell are you dl;ing?00:00
Jucatononewmsgs: that's... um.. unusual00:01
terran4000I can't even find that munch anime and british tv to download!00:01
ign0ramuspierro: cool- its a really intuitive installer!00:01
Jucato1. It doesn't download stuff without your consent/knowledge00:01
Pierroapt-get clean :)00:01
terran4000*much00:01
Pierroyeah00:01
Pierroit is00:01
Jucato2. It periodically cleans (30 days) the APT cache, but you can manually do it with the command Pierro gave00:01
nonewmsgsign0ramus, no i only download stuffs i want00:01

ubotuwubi advice here: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=234  and  http://wubi.org  [file wubi bugs here:  https://launchpad.net/wubi/+filebug ] (it will be included in hardy 8.04 currently in beta)00:03
Jucatohm.. they changed it..00:03
ign0ramusdamn bots! :)00:03
terran40008.04 is comming along nicely, only minor problems so far.00:04
terran4000Hope they finish it soon.00:04
Pierroyeah i like it a lot00:04
ign0ramusjucato: do you know how to limit the .thumbnails folder? i've gotten a lot of good advice from you before...00:04
Pierro30 days i think00:04
Pierroor less00:04
nonewmsgsign0ramus, old tv shows, ripped movies, etc00:04
PierroJericho got cancelled again :(00:05
JucatoO.o00:05
Jucatoign0ramus: hm.. nope...00:05
Pierromy fav. dystopian show00:05
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: so why are you blaming linux???00:05
nonewmsgsPierro, i am hoping sarah conner comes on00:05
Pierrolol00:05
ign0ramusjucato: np.  thanks anyway00:05
Jucatoign0ramus: he's blaming linux for condoning his addiction :)00:05
nonewmsgsign0ramus, hehe no i LOVE it.  otherwise i wouldnt use it so much00:05
Jucatoanyway, offtopic :)00:05
hellhounddoes anyone know why a wireless connection would go much slower in Kubuntu than in Linux?00:06
terran4000Because Kubuntu is linux? o.O00:06
ign0ramushellhound: hmm... kubuntu vs. linux??? wha??00:06
hellhoundOpps I meant....does anyone know why a wireless connection would go much slower in Kubuntu than in WINDOZ?00:06
ign0ramushellhound: what kind of wireless card do you have?00:07
ign0ramusthere shouldn't be any real difference00:07
nonewmsgshellhound, i know that 54mbps dont use 108mbps in general00:07
terran4000hellhound: most likely because of drivers ... though from what I've seen so far, most (thus not all) have no speed problems.00:07
ign0ramusand what are you using as a benchmark (ie, how can you tell?)00:07
* Jucato uses http://speedtest.net usually...00:08
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: have you tried using Miro? you can use it to torrent, download http, and watch all your dl;s, and it can delete shows older than "X" days... its pretty cool00:09
* terran4000 is happy if there actually IS a connection to complain about.00:09
nonewmsgsign0ramus, neat00:09
hellhoundign0ramus: it is a netgear WPN31100:09
Pierroyeah i tried miro its buggy as hell on windows but runs ok on linux00:09
* Jucato introduces nonewmsgs to the concept of burning files on DVD's...00:09
ign0ramushellhound: a pcmcia card?00:10
nonewmsgsJucato, i just burned like 15 last weekend00:10
Jucatoburn more! :P00:10
nonewmsgsJucato, my ISP must hate me00:10
Odd-rationaleis there anything like miro written for kde?00:10
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: i was just going to ask who you have!00:10
terran4000Unless they sent you a DMCA, they still love ya as long as you pay the bills.00:10
hellhoundign0ramus: no it is a PCI card on a desktop (not laptop) it is too far away for a wired connection00:10
nonewmsgsign0ramus, verizon 3.0mbps00:10
ign0ramusodd-rationale: you can run miro on kde00:11
nonewmsgscan't wait until fios finally reaches me00:11
Pierrononewmsgs how fast will fios be/00:11
Pierro?00:11
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: verizon is known for being pretty cool about bandwidth. not like comcast...00:11
Odd-rationaleign0ramus: yeah i know. just wondering00:11
nonewmsgsPierro, they have 3 speeds, 15mpbs, 30mbps, and i think 50mbps00:11
ign0ramushellhound: what kind of signal are you getting? full signal?00:11
Pierronice nonewmsgs00:12
ign0ramus50mbps! oh man- i'd need 10 more hdds!00:12
hellhoundign0ramus: how do i check in kubuntu?00:12
Pierroi played against a guy with fios from the usa i am from Holland and we didnt have any lag00:12
CreationistHow do I make sure Kubuntu is using the latest nVidia drivers (proprietary)?00:12
ign0ramushellhound: don't you have a little icon in your kicker panel (taskbar)?00:12
hellhoundign0ramus: i have a few of them00:13
ign0ramuscreationist: check in kcontrol00:13
Pierroati proprietary drivers on Kubuntu borked my system so bad i had to reinstall :/00:13
ign0ramushellhound: the one that corresponds to your wireless signal?00:13
Creationistign0ramus: I basically mean how do I make Kubuntu install the newest drivers as they become available?00:13
nonewmsgsCreationist, envy does that00:14
terran4000Pierro: yeah, ati driver are 'different'. There actually is a way to finesse them into submission.00:14
Pierrononewmsgs i am currently on 24 MBit/s symmetrical fiber-to-the-home you get used to it really fast i might upgrade to 100 MBit/s symmetrical00:14
nonewmsgsCreationist, or at least it installs the latest one when you first do it00:14
ign0ramusi don't think envy is recommended... :(00:14
ign0ramus!envy00:14
ubotuenvy is an unsupported tool to install newer versions of binary video drivers than provided by the official repositories. Use at your own risk, and remember that the latest version is not necessarily the "best". See « /msg ubotu binarydriver »00:14
Pierro:)00:14
Creationistnonewmsgs: Right, but that's not what I'm looking for.00:15
JucatoCreationist: when a new driver has been packaged for Ubuntu, it will be available as an update on your system00:15
Pierroyeah envy breaks your system00:15
terran4000No always00:15
ign0ramuscreationist: it should do it automatically, but you can always check for yourself00:15
hellhoundign0ramus: I have a volume setting, the klipper, and Knetwork manager (but I am not using KNetwork manager since I could not get it to work..instead I put my SSID and key in /etc/network/interfaces00:15
Pierrothey recommended envy to me in #ubuntu on EFnet :/ i was stupid enough to try envy00:15
CreationistJucato: Hmm... then the package is WAY behind.  My version is 100.x   the current nVidia version is 164.x or something similar.00:15
terran4000I used it on 3 new installs and it worked fine enough.00:15
Pierroterran4000 maybe for nvidia00:16
nonewmsgsyou can always download the latest one from the chipset manufacturer?00:16
Pierronot for ati though00:16
terran4000Pierro: twice on ati, once on NV00:16
Pierronot on my box anyways00:16
Pierroyeah00:16
terran4000hehe00:16
JucatoCreationist: one of two things: 1. They might not have packaged it immediately for technical reasons or 2. It's already packaged, but somehow you haven't received the update yet00:16
Pierroproprietary ati drivers are terrible00:16
ign0ramushellhound: hmm... i wonder if knetworkmanager is interfering then.00:17
Pierromaybe not for higher end cards00:17
terran4000you're telling me? I'm stuck with em until I get enough cash to guy a new nv card.00:17
nonewmsgsi have ati difficulty with windows and linux with ati00:17
Pierrobut for my old card it was terrible00:17
ign0ramushellhound: if you're not using it at all, try removing it, restarting X, and see if your wireless speeds improve00:17
Odd-rationaleIf I had a choice between a intel video driver and a nvidia one, which one would be a better choice to get?00:17
CreationistJucato: Hmm.. okay, I guess I'll just get it from nVidia then00:17
Odd-rationale*video card00:17
terran4000Odd-rationale: nvidia00:17
ign0ramusodd-rationale: nvidia, by far... for now anyway00:17
hellhoundign0ramus: to remove it I just do so with adapt manager?00:17
JucatoCreationist: the newest nvidia driver is available in hardy. maybe it will be backported to gutsy or you can upgrade to hardy in a month00:18
ign0ramushellhound: yup.  or terminal... either way00:18
Odd-rationaleok. thanks!00:18
ign0ramusodd-rationale: even on windows, the comparable nvidia cards are outperforming ATI, and the fact that ATI drivers *suck* on Linux makes it a no-brainer00:19
Odd-rationaleign0ramus: ati or intel?00:19
Pierroyeah never again ati or amd for me00:19
ign0ramusati00:19
Pierronext time its intel and nvidia00:19
ign0ramusyeah, amd isn't much fun with linux either (currently)00:20
ign0ramusthe X64 support just doesn't cut it.00:20
Pierrolol amd is selling their failing quadcore cpus as triple cores now00:21
nonewmsgsi am all for amd/ati actually being competition but they seem to be more of lip service now.  open source 2d drivers.  wtf? they haven't opened the 3d which would be actually useful00:21
ign0ramusi got a 'slightly used' Acer Extensa 5620 for <$400, and linux instantly recognized the intel chipset/PRO wireless, and the dual-core cpu. Easy!00:21
terran4000o.O, root ... lol.00:22
nonewmsgsign0ramus, i have had wonderful luck with the *buntu and hardware.00:22
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: yeah, i loved AMD when they were actually beating Intel, because they're cheaper and were cooler (temp-wise).  but right now, they are lagging00:22
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: the only two things i had to manually do something about were the 1. HD Intel sound and 2. Integrated webcam00:22
ign0ramusthe sound involved adding a single line to a modules file - easy00:23
nonewmsgsign0ramus, now that i think about it I did replace all my wirelesscards, replace webcam, and replace videocard00:23
Pierroi have had no luck with my blue tooth headset on Kubuntu i was able to pair and auth the device and connect but there wasnt any bluetooth audio device i could use in the Kubuntu audiomixer00:23
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: and everything was auto-detect?00:23
nonewmsgsyeah.  the videocard did work but not well with beryl and the webcam was very dark green instead of colors (both were very old)00:24
ign0ramusand my webcam involved install the linux-uvc driver along with v4l and v4l200:24
ign0ramusalso not too hard00:24
nonewmsgsso i spent my money on hardware instead of the OS00:24
Pierrothe compiz stuff works very well for me with the ati open source drivers00:24
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: the way it should be00:24
ign0ramuspierro: i have a stupid integrated intel graphics that compiz seems to hate00:25
Pierrook i see00:25
Pierroonly thing that didnt run smoothly was kiba-dock00:25
Pierrofor me00:25
Pierrocouldnt get it to run properly00:25
Pierrocpu jumped at 90 % :/00:26
Pierrolol00:26
Pierrobut its useless eyecandy anyways :)00:26
Pierrokiba-dock at least00:26
Pierrosomeone should fix that kiba-dock00:26
Pierrois it abandonware?00:27
Odd-rationaleis there any "mac-like" dock that works well with kde?00:27
nonewmsgsthe one issue i have had with kubuntu is i had a cute little widget but once my system went into powersave mode it wouldn't come back if that widget was on00:27
yakuziOdd-rationale: i thought AWN is something like that00:28
Pierroyeah awn00:28
ign0ramuspierro: you can try kdocker - not as snazzy, but essentially the same thing00:28
Odd-rationaleyakuzi: OK. I thought awn had some problems with kde? no?00:29
Pierroi basically wanted to have kiba-dock cuz of all those cool youtube vids about it00:29
nonewmsgsi'm not a big dockman00:29
Daisuke_Idolooks cool, completely useless.00:29
yakuziOdd-rationale: i don't know, i never tried it00:29
ign0ramusdaisuke_ido: completely agree00:29
Odd-rationaleyakuzi: me neither!00:29
ign0ramusespecially once i found out about Alt+Space ;)00:29
Odd-rationaleprobably someone already made a plasmoid dock...00:30
ign0ramusi hate to say it, but eyecandy is much easier in GNOME, although it looks much better in KDE00:31
Pierrolol00:31
ign0ramusbut i00:31
Pierrothe physics engine is what makes it so fun and pointless at the same time :)00:31
nonewmsgsi want the gnome weather widget or something close to it on k00:31
ign0ramusprefer to use my resources for real work00:32
firecrotchwork? what's that?00:32
Pierrolol00:32
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: then you want superkaramba + liquid weather00:32
yakuzithings like maple :(00:32
Pierroi keep minimizing windows to see the paper planes :)00:32
ign0ramuswork = downloading tons of stuff, playing games, chatting, etc00:32
ign0ramusyou know, work! :)00:32
Pierroign0ramus i cant play games on linux :(00:33
nonewmsgsfor work i use windows00:33
Pierroonly emulators work well00:33
firecrotchOh, *that* work!00:33
Pierrostupid ati00:33
ign0ramuspierro: what kind of games?  i have a Playstation emulater, SNES emulator, and there;s a bunch of games in Add-Remove...00:33
terran4000Pierro: You can't? Which drivers are you using? the Open source ones?00:33
Pierrocan you install xen on Kubuntu?00:33
Pierroign0ramus i mean games via wine igno00:34
terran4000Pierro: yes you can.00:34
Pierroign0ramus00:34
Pierrowont work for me00:34
nonewmsgswhy are all the emulators easier in windows? really.  even snes9x and zsnes00:34
Pierroanyways00:34
yakuziPierro: at least you have a normal GPU, i have to do it with a silly intel GMA 945 without memory of it's own00:34
firecrotchThat reminds me, I should try to find my USB game pad00:34
Pierroyeah yakuzi00:34
Pierroyou have a better cpu00:34
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: because the windows ones all involve a GUI, whereas the linux ones are the engine with a gui thrown on at the last minute!00:34
Pierrothough :)00:34
nonewmsgsmicrosoft makes nice gamepads.  they call them xbox things00:34
Pierroi have amd00:34
Pierro:(00:34
Pierrolol00:35
Pierroyou can use your wiimote00:35
ign0ramusnonewmsgs: if you were comfortable using the terminal to play the emulators, they're actually better on linux00:35
yakuziwell i've an intel core solo T1350 (on my laptop that is, my desktop can't run linux due to some aid array crap...early sata motherboard)00:35
Pierrosomeone needs to make a nice flashy arcade app for all the emulation in kde style00:36

ign0ramusok, well that rules out any misspellings/typos00:42
firecrotchI just finished installing Hardy-KDE4 on my laptop.  SOUND WORKS!!!00:42

ign0ramusfirecrotch: did you ever add your laptop's model as a parameter in .modules???00:47
firecrotchign0ramus: Yeah, I've previously tried just about EVERYTHING that could be done00:48
ign0ramusfirecrotch: well i'm glad hardy works for you.  i;ve seen some previews, but it didn't seem that much different... did you notice anything that sticks out (besides the sound, lol)?00:49
firecrotchign0ramus:  Not yet, I'm working on getting my wireless to work00:49
ign0ramusfirecrotch: broadcom card?00:49
terran4000ign0ramus: don't know if it's just me, but 8.04 seems a bit more 'robust', crisp and a tee-bit faster.00:50
firecrotchActually not a broadcom00:50
ign0ramusfirecrotch: but it's not working?00:50
ign0ramusterran4000: i'm going to wait for the official release, but it does seem promising!00:50

ign0ramusyakuzi: not too often *except* on flash sites.  if i'm viewing youtube, i have like 1:4 odds that it will crash and I have to force-exit01:01
ign0ramusyakuzi: but that has to do with the flash plugin, not firefox itself01:01
yakuziwell hat site has much video on it, but it evencrashes when not using the video-streams at all01:01

firecrotchSukoshi: Nope06:39
eddieftwdepends on the problem with vista06:39
eddieftwjust to resize? you can use a partition manager to resize. if there are not other issues with the ntfs, afaik06:39
firecrotcheddieftw:  Not with the new version of NTFS in Vista06:39
eddieftwoh really?! maybe that's why ive been having trouble when people want help with that OS'06:40
SukoshiAh, so I was suspecting.06:40
SukoshiSo I'm limited to Vista's 1/2 HDD resize limit?06:40
firecrotchSukoshi:  I wasnt aware that there was such a restriction in vista06:41
Sukoshifirecrotch: Oh, that's the saying I've been hearing crop up over the forum posts I've been reading.06:42
SukoshiBut I guess if there's no other choice, Vista's partition manager it is.06:42
firecrotchif I recall correctly, I was able to make it any size I wanted06:43

tomahasamootPackage firefox is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, oris only available from another sourceE: Package firefox has no installation candidate07:00
tomahasamootI'd rather not get into compiling stuff that doesn't need to be compiled... I'd rather get apt working07:01
tomahasamootapt-get update is starting to work now07:05
Jucato_maw: why do you think packages are *not* up to date? (after running those commands)07:06
firecrotchWhat stupid setting is it in Compiz that doesn't allow me to change certain options in ccsm ?07:11

alastair'kay. I had to reinstall my OS because I thought my disk was b0rked but it wasn't. I installed Gutsy over Gutsy, keeping my /home partition intact. The only problem I now have is that knetworkmanager doesn't make kwallet ask for my password. CreationistLjL: So do you think it would be okay to simple delete everything under ~/.kde/ except for the application folders I use under ~/.kde/share/apps?  I'm planning on doing a fresh install with KDE instead of Gnome and don't want any leftover settings...16:56
LjLCreationist: you should also look into .kde/share/config. why don't you do something like: grep -R "marok\|orrent" ~/.kde/16:57
JucatoCreationist: config files are in ~/.kde/share/config/16:57
Jucato(data files are in ~/.kde/share/apps/)16:58
=== temu is now known as darra
CreationistJucato: So just deleting ~/.kde/share/config should do the trick and give me a fresh install of KDE without losing my application settings?17:01
JucatoCreationist: by deleting ~/.kde/share/config/ you *lose* application settings17:02
Creationistah17:02
Creationistperhaps I should file this basic inability as a bug? ;)17:03
alastairCreationist: application settings are generally stored in your home directory. If you keep that, you keep the settings.17:04
alastairIndeed, personal settings basically *have* to be sotred there because you're not allowed to write anywhere else17:04
CreationistThen again, most Gnome apps do the same thing for some reason... tuck all their configuration and data files within the directory structure of the window manager... strange.17:04
JucatoCreationist: inability to what?17:05
Creationistalastair: No, I understand that.  I'm trying to do a completely fresh install of Kubuntu (currently running Gnome), but I don't want ANY of my previous KDE settings.... except that I want to keep all my Amarok, Ktorrent settings.17:05
CreationistJucato: To do what I just said I'm trying to do :)17:05
CreationistJucato: Do you happen to know why the developers put their configs within the window manager directories?  WOuldn17:06
CreationistWOuldn't it make more sense to just put them under ~/?17:06
Jucatomove/rename the ~/.kde folder. once you login, a new one will be generated. copy over the Amarok and KTorrent config files and app data from the old ~/.kde to the new one17:06
Jucatowithin the what?17:06
CreationistJucato: Ah... didn't think of that.17:06
Jucatothey are under ~/17:06
Jucato~/.kde is under ~/17:07
CreationistJucato: Right... but what I mean is that most KDE apps have their files within ~/.kde/ and most gnome apps have their files under ~/.kde/gnome2/.  Why can't their just be ~/.amarok, for example?17:07
CreationistWouldn't that be more intuitive and useful?17:07
CreationistI meant ~/gnome2/ on that second one, by the way.17:08
llutzCreationist: no, it would fill your home and make it more confusig17:08
Jucatoyou prefer to have 40+ toplevel hidden directories?17:08

Creationistlol and I'm not even sure how to rename a directory in the terminal...17:14
Jucato.kderc is the config for fonts mostly. .gtkrc-2.0-kde is the config for the gtk-qt-engine (make GTK/GNOME apps look like Qt/KDE)17:14

debIt is a bit lengthy, but essentially the is a problem with 8.04 that would be simple to correct21:20

SlimeyPetenones: oh wait, only if you have vista23:05
SlimeyPetenones: it doesn't support DVDs under xp, damn.23:06
JohnFluxhellhound: and I don't really know how to advise you.  Google for  'high load average' 'no programs'   or some such23:06
JohnFluxhellhound: it's a fairly common problem, but I don't know the solution23:06
JohnFluxhellhound: if you find out more, let me know please so that I can advise the next person :)23:06
SlimeyPetenones: I'm not sure about Nero 8, but I that when you start Nero 7 you have to select between DVD and CD - the main menu has two "modes". You need to make sure that it's in DVD mode.23:07
sourcemakeris there a kde meta package for all kde components? kdebase. kdegames, kdedevelop and so on?23:08
nonesit also say something about 64 bit23:08
nonesand as i understood i have 32 bit am i right??23:08
nosrednaekimhellhound: whats your current RAM usage?23:08
SlimeyPetenones: you are23:08
meeerohi, it's about 7.10, a fresh-install. nvidia-settings tell me that the monitor supports max. 1024x768 when set to auto, but i can manually override it to 1280x1024 and even more. it's a huge monitor and DPMS seems to tell the software that no more than 1024x768 is possible23:09
meeerowell, the problem now is that i can override it using xrandr or nvidia-settings, but kde sets the resolution back to 1024x768 at every startup, any ideas?23:09
nonesok23:10
nonesok23:10
meeerothe monitor-settings in kcontrol can't set more than 1024x768, so i guess it's because of this23:10
nonesthen i have anther problem cause i have win xp23:10
nonesi know23:10
nonesplease dont get mad23:10
nonessorry for the trouble23:10
nonesi am slow23:10
SlimeyPeteheh, it's no problem23:10
nonesnew on this and i want to learn23:11
meeerothey also seem to show a wrong frequency, 50hz is max. in kcontrol, but nvidia-settings say that about 100 is possible23:11
nonessorry for the inconvient slimeypete23:11
SlimeyPetenones: ah, hang on a moment, I have another idea23:11
nosrednaekimmeeero: you have the nvidia driver installed, and are currently using them?23:11
meeeroyes, nvidia is in Xorg23:12
meeeroloaded and working successfully23:12
nejodemeeero: have you tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg??23:12
SlimeyPetenones: get imgburn from http://www.imgburn.com/   it is free and I am pretty sure it does dvd23:12
meeerosorry, but what would that change?23:12
meeeroi mean, i can try it23:12
nonesi did daown load the other one23:13
nosrednaekimmeeero: you can add resolutions23:13
nonesand it suppose to be installed by now but i dont see it any where23:13
SlimeyPetenones: I don't think isorecorder will work for DVDs because you don't have vista23:13
nejodemeeero: there's a part where it asks you to choose your prefered resolution23:13
nonesand i can assure you that is not because i am torpe23:13
SlimeyPetenones: so I think you can forget about isorecorder. imgburn should work though.23:13
nonesok23:13
noneslets see23:14
=== Ubuntu is now known as jimmysolis
meeerobut i could manually add these lines?23:15
nejodemeeero: make a backup copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and run the command...23:16
nejode...if something goes wrong you can always use your backup copy23:16
meeeroit asks a lot of questions, i'm not sure about every single one and the current config is not really a help to determine the current settings, i'll try to add the lines manually first, backup created of course23:16
meeerothe problem now is, it says:23:17
meeeroModes      "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"23:17
meeeroand Option         "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0; 1280x1024 +0+0"23:17
cptR3Dcan someone help me with mounting a usb harddrive with ntfs on it?23:17
meeeroso 1280x1024 is already the preferred choise23:17
nosrednaekimmeeero: erase that Option metamodes line23:18
meeeroit's about kde then, it lowers the resolution because it thinks, 1024x768 is the maximum, i can't set more in kcontrol23:18
nonesok i got a lot23:18
nejodemeeero: that must be because of the sync values of the monitor23:19
siofwolvescptR3D, do you know what name kubuntu has gave to your usb drive ? /dev/sd?23:20
nejodemeeero: do you have the specs of your monitor?23:20
nonesok would i choose the one that say DATA DVD or VIDEO DVD or DATA HD-DVD? to record the kubunt i386???23:21
SlimeyPeteDATA DVD23:21
nonesok23:21

Jucato"to record the kubuntu i386"?23:22
hellhoundJohnFlux: ok i am having difficulty trying to find anything in google, but those numbers seem to match what other people have where the support says that it is fine... my numbers are now 1.04, 1.29, 1.47 and still running slow23:22
cptR3Dduude i totally just figured it out23:22
cptR3Dsiofwolves: thx ne way23:22
noneslet you know23:22
Jucatonones: what do you mean to record?23:22
SlimeyPeteJucato: he has the DVD i386 iso23:22
SlimeyPetenero 8 won't burn it for him23:22
SlimeyPeteso I told him to use imgburn23:22
siofwolvescptR3D, np23:22
SlimeyPetehopefully that will work better.23:23
Jucatonones, SlimeyPete: you don't create a Data DVD from an ISO. otherwise it will just burn an .iso file unto the DVD23:23
SlimeyPeteJucato: eh?23:23
JucatoThere should be an option there like "Burn Image"23:23
SlimeyPeteimgburn should burn the iso as a disc image23:23
SlimeyPetebecause disc images are all that imgburn does23:23
SlimeyPeteJucato: nero told him it was too big for the DVD23:23
Jucatooh23:24
SlimeyPetewhich suggests to me that nero is broken in some way23:24
JucatoSlimeyPete: imgburn calls it "Data DVD"?23:24
SlimeyPeteyes. It can burn data or video images you see.23:24
SlimeyPeteor HD DVD images, apparently O.o23:24
SlimeyPetebut it does burn them as images, not files.23:24
Jucatoweird and confusing name :)23:25
nonesok23:25
nonesi couldnt do it23:25
SlimeyPetewhy not?23:26
=== Airforce5555 is now known as Soccer5555
nonesit appear that for some reason the drive dont detect the dvd23:26
SlimeyPetenones: does your drive normally burn DVDs OK?23:27
nonesthis is the first time iam trying to23:27
nonesthis is a combo cd-dvd burner23:28
hellhounddoes anyone else know what I can test to find out why one of my computers with kubuntu is running so slow?  Top does not appear to show anything of high usage.. but everything from typing to clicking on menus is delayed 1-5 seconds23:28
SlimeyPetenones: oh. I think your drive is not working properly for some reason. Or maybe the disc is broken. Are you sure it is a DVD burner, and not a CD burner with a DVD *reader*?23:28
nonesmmmm23:28
nonesi see23:29
SlimeyPetenones: it is common to have a combo drive that reads DVD and CDs but only writes CDs.23:29
nonesthat is the nasty reallity23:29
nonesthat is my case23:29
nosrednaekimhellhound: what is your memory usage? use "free -m" to tell you23:29
nonesso i am stock on this nasty win xp23:29
SlimeyPeteok, if you can only burn CDs then you need to download the CD ISO: http://softlibre.unizar.es/ubuntu/releases/kubuntu/gutsy/kubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso23:29
nonesoo23:29
SlimeyPeteit is 700MB and will fit on a CD.23:29
nonesthen theres a solution23:29
noneslet me download that23:29
SlimeyPeteok. It should work :)23:30
nonesis it complete as well as the other??23:30
charwoodhellhound: Not an expert, but your slowness could be from the hard drive, not the processor.  This can happen if for some reason DMA is turned off.  To check this, open a konsole and type: "sudo hdparm -i /dev/sda1" (replace sda1 with your drive)23:30
SlimeyPeteit has the whole Kubuntu system on it. It does not have as much software but you can easily download the software you need from the internet - it is all automated and very easy to do.23:30
hellhoundnosrednaekim: it shows total 1011 used 890 free 12123:30

charwoodOn a memory related question in KDE System Guard, are VmSize and VmRss equivalent to Memory Used and Memory Used - Cache respectively?23:37
nosrednaekimhellhound: thats really odd, You really shouldn't have to do this, but does rebooting fix it?23:37
charwoodhellhound: Did you check the DMA on your hard drive?23:38

nosrednaekimdorkface: yes23:41
charwooddorkface: You can use beryl or compiz as your window manager instead.23:41
dorkfaceah, cool23:41
nosrednaekimdorkface: just run "awesome --replace"23:41
Jucatodorkface: general info: <apt> You can change the window manager used by KDE with the $KDEWM environment variable. See http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/kdewm/23:41
Jucatofor Compiz, it's a bit different, but basically the same23:41

dorkfaceJucato: that's all a window manager does?23:43
dorkfaceI thought it did more23:43
Jucatodorkface: what are you referring to?23:44
dorkfacelike, binding a specific key to "raise" a specific program23:44
Jucatoaaah23:44

Jucatoif you mean "a specific program", then no... KWin doesn't seem to have that (you have cycle through Alt+Tab)23:45
dorkfaceyeah23:45
Jucato(although in KWin 4 the expose function allows you to start typing)23:45
nosrednaekimdorkface: yes,you can bind keys to applications23:46
dorkfaceI'd like to bind a key so that, no matter what I am doing, I can press, say, F10, and the konsole window will "raise" and come into focus23:46
Jucatonosrednaekim: to raise them?23:46
