RichEdhi guys & girls00:15
RichEdquick bit of advice solicited ... i run firefox on edubuntu ... what's the best in your opinion "additional browser" to install00:16
RichEd( i want to have 2 gmail accounts open at the same time, and need another browser side-by-side with firefox )00:17
leecohenI've been trying out Flock today and really like it so far (it's built on firefox code)00:19
RichEdahh ... good answer ... less modules to load and install & run is the sort of efficiency I am looking for00:21
RichEdi'll see if there is a version for my old creaking dapper00:21
stgraberRichEd: epiphany (package epiphany-browser) is also gecko based and supposed to be lightweight00:21
RichEdstgraber & leecohen ... the boys in the (virtual office) suggested creating another firefox profile ... lemm try that 1st00:23
leecohenthat's actually a good idea00:23
leecohenprobably less memory intensive00:24
stgraberRichEd: not sure you can start two profiles at the same time, last I tried it wasn't possible00:24
RichEdstgraber: been told to try it out ... seems you can run two instances of firefox and not 1 parent with children00:36
RichEdgiving it a test00:36
mattyohey all - I am having a total nightmare with something (ltsp) I wonder if anyone could help out at all?00:47
RichEdmattyo: ogra is the resident expert ... he seems to be offline right now (germany time)00:51
mattyoah yeah it is pretty late here too (London!)00:51
RichEdcheck also in #ltsp ... that is the core of our ltsp and there are lots of stateside people there00:51
mattyoYeah am on there too cheers ;)00:51
RichEdmattyo: i'll see your 11:51 and raise you a GMT +200:51
RichEdza :)00:51
mattyo:) yeah - it's one of those annoying ones that keeps you up all night00:52
mattyo+2 is way too early - especially as our clocks went forward by an hour00:52
stgraberRichEd: oh, we are on the same timezone now :)00:52
RichEdmattyo: well at least i am slogging away one some personal stuff ... giving me the sort of illusion of a partial real life00:53
mattyoreal life is not allowed00:53
RichEdmattyo: upgrade ! it is in the new version00:54
stgraberRichEd: you sure of that ?00:55
RichEdyes ... it's a plug-in ...00:55
mattyothe 8.04 one?00:55
RichEdfor some you are the bearer of the plug-in00:56
RichEdfor others the receptor00:56
mattyo:)00:56
RichEdif you look for an opposite group member it can be quite fun00:56
RichEdbut that is just the common usage, bearer to bearer and receptor to receptor can be linked as an optional00:57
RichEd;)00:57
* RichEd stops talking shite so he can finish and get to bed00:57
kgoetzlol00:57
mattyoso you reckon I should just dump this install and go straight to the beta?00:58
RichEd! yay ... got the personal pro-nouns right ... the /me normally clashes with my I sentiment00:58
RichEdmattyo: the beta is experimental ... testing can be fun  !@00:58
RichEdand my bang ! messed with ubotu00:58
RichEd<ubotu> Error: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)00:58
RichEdmost people should have a disclaimer like that ;)00:59
RichEdpresent company excluded of course00:59
RichEdhi mr goetz00:59
kgoetzmorning mister ed.01:00
* kgoetz discovers a bug in [gnome,edubuntu] and debates a bug report01:03
* RichEd speculates whether karl or the bug report will win the deate01:04

bibsthahello, im having a strange problem15:52
bibsthaim getting the ip from dhcp, but the kernel image is not loading15:52
bibsthaim sure the interfaces have proper ip address15:53
bibsthahow do i debug this?15:53
ogra_cmpcare you sure there is no other dhcp server running in your network ?15:53
bibsthaits a nic <---> nic connection15:54
bibsthaand its getting ip address alright15:54
bibsthahow to check if tftp is running?15:54
ogra_cmpcgrep tftp /etc/inetd.conf && ps ax|grep inetd15:55
ogra_cmpccopy paste that line ...15:55
bibsthanothing15:55
ogra_cmpcshould return you two lines if al is ok15:55
ogra_cmpchow did you install ?15:56
bibsthaon top of ubuntu desktop using ltsp-stand alone15:56
ogra_cmpcthe ltsp-server-standalone package is supposed to set up everything ... including tftp15:56
bibsthayeah i did exactly according to wiki15:56
bibstha2000               stream  tcp            nowait  nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nbdrootd /opt/ltsp/images/i386.img15:57
bibsthathis is what i have in /etc/inetd.conf15:57
ogra_cmpcno line for tftp ?15:58
bibsthaand tftp demon isn't running? although i did sudo /etc/init.d/tftpd-hpa start, it responsed with nothing15:58
bibsthano OK or fail15:58
bibsthai did mistakenly install ltsp-server before i installed standalone15:59
ogra_cmpctftpd doesnt (and shouldnt) start from an initscript16:00
bibsthaoh16:00
ogra_cmpcdpkg -l tftpd-hpa16:00
ogra_cmpcis it installed?16:00
bibsthaits there i checked16:00
bibsthaii  tftpd-hpa                     0.43-1.1ubuntu1               HPA's tftp server16:00
ogra_cmpcthats quite strange then, did you modify anything to make it not start from inetd ?16:00
bibsthahumm, haven't touched inetd.conf file or anything16:01
bibsthai presume installing lts-server messed up somewhere16:01
ogra_cmpcinstallinf tftpd-hpa should add the line to inetd.conf16:02
bibsthaweird really, i did exactly same and it was ok in my friends pc16:02
bibsthaoh16:02
ogra_cmpcltsp-server doesnt change any system configs16:02
bibsthashould i dpkg-reconfigure?16:03
ogra_cmpcltsp-server-standalone has the dependencies though that pull in tftpd-hpa ...16:03
bibsthado u have a ltsp-server? any idea what i should be having in /etc/inetd.conf16:04
bibsthashould the client reply to ping, after it got an ip?16:06
ogra_cmpcwell, you can try a dpkg-reconfigure tftpd-hpa ... make sure it starts from inetd16:08
=== zamba_ is now known as zamba
bibsthahow to make sure it starts from inetd?16:13
ogra_cmpcdpkg-reconfigure should have asked you16:14
bibsthait did,16:15
bibsthai said yes, may be i should wireshark the interface16:15
ogra_cmpcif you said yes there should be an entry in the inetd.conf now16:15
bibstha2000               stream  tcp            nowait  nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nbdrootd /opt/ltsp/images/i386.img16:16
bibsthai think nbdrootd is what its supposed to run16:17
ogra_cmpcnbdrootd serves the frootfs after the kernel was supplied by tftp16:20
ogra_cmpcnot intresting in that state16:20
bibsthaoh16:20
ogra_cmpcyou want a tftp line in your inetd.conf16:20
ogra_cmpcif dpkg-reconfigure tftpd-hap didnt add that when you said yes to the debconf question it asks then there is something really broken16:21
bibsthashould i put one myself?16:21
bibsthahumm may be16:21
ogra_cmpc*tftpd-hpa16:21
bibsthaur right16:21
ogra_cmpcdo you have something like xinetd installed perhaps ? something that could break the inetd setup used by ubuntu16:22
bibsthalemme check16:23
ogra_cmpcor did you fiddle with any settings in the /etc/default dir manually that could cause this ?16:23
bibsthanop16:24
bibsthai've tftpd-hpa not tftp-hpa16:26
ogra_cmpcyou should have both16:28
ogra_cmpcerr, no, actually only tftpd-hpa, sorry16:29
bibsthaogra_cmpc: so its tftp, i will see what to enter in /etc/inetd.conf16:34
bibsthai didn't know inetd before, now it makes some sense16:34
bibsthaogra_cmpc: really bothering, u have any idea what should be in /etc/inetd.conf?16:48
=== manu_ubu is now known as manu_ubu-away
ogra_cmpcwell, something is wrong if your dpkg-reconfigure doesnt add it ...16:56
ogra_cmpcare you sure you answered the question right ?16:56
ogra_cmpcthe line needs to be:16:57
ogra_cmpctftp           dgram   udp     wait    root  /usr/sbin/in.tftpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s /var/lib/tftpboot16:57
ogra_cmpcbut you should really find out why its not added automatically16:57
bibsthaogra_cmpc: hey thanks, the line helped real good :D17:14
Muhammad_SaadHello everyone! I have a question about Edubuntu. Is anyone here who can answer it?17:27
Muhammad_SaadI had requested Edubuntu CD from free shipping service. Now after I have installed it, I cannot see any educational applications installed. I searched the CD but there is none of them there either. What is the reason?17:29
Muhammad_SaadAll the packages are the same as Ubuntu.17:30
MattyOvHi all. I am having an issue with LTSP and thin clients just hanging. Can anyone help at all?17:36
nixternalyou all see that Blackboard tried to patent e-learning?19:22
nixternalrather, it was rejected..seems they already had the patent19:23
sonjagI think I am once again going to be admonished by some, but oh well, here goes. I have edubuntu 7.04 serving a middle school. A while ago, my little junior hackers found a bunch of hacks using terminal (and published it to the LA teacher as a writing sample... fun little critters) so I removed their rights to use Terminal (for which a few of you let me know you thought that they should get to play with it. Sorry for the difference of opinion.) Now they fi19:29
sonjaggured out that they can use Wanda the Fish to run vncviewer and they're hacking into each others accounts. If they run it enough times, they bring the servers to their knees and we all crash. I want to restrict their use of this now. Can someone tell me the application name or how to restrict its use?19:29
blue-frog_sonjag: you might want to install and run pessulus19:46
blue-frog_it will help you lock down features such as the fish :)19:47
blue-frog_sonjag: you should use it along with sabayon by the way19:48
sonjagblue-frog_, yes, I agree. It's on my list of things to learn.19:48
sonjagblue-frog_, thanks. Yes, Sabayon is in there too. My issue right now is that Sabayon doesn't recognize my Active Directory  users which is how they log in. I'm hoping 7.10 fixes that.19:49
blue-frog_sonjag: where are the profiles stored?19:50
blue-frog_on the windows server?19:50
blue-frog_forget what I said19:50
blue-frog_I don't understand how edubuntu server interacts with active directory in fact. there are no users on the edubuntu server?19:52
blue-frog_and so no /homr/users?19:53
johnnythere are users on the edubuntu server19:57
johnnyjust not in the chroot19:57
sonjagsorry for the delay... stepped away. When you use winbind to authenticate to an AD server, there are no local LDAP users which is what Sabayon sees. So I can assign everyone to a single group (I think). I've meant to do more homework on this. I heard a guy talk about it a while back, but couldn't get it working. I'll see if I can connect up with him again. I believe he uses Sabayon and Pessalus, and AD for authentication.20:37
sonjagBTW, edubuntu uses a combination of winbind and PAM to authenticate to AD. There are some issues with SID/GID assignments, especially in larger networks.20:38

jimcooncat_I'd like to know what happens on a small ltsp setup with a long term power outage. When all the systems come back up, do light clients hang because the DHCP server isn't ready yet? How do you deal with this?20:49
