thewardenHi. I'm new to ubuntu but not linux/unix. I'm trying to figure out how to store files in a central location on the same machine for all people to use.19:48
johnnythat's always a good question.. one not resolved19:49
thewardenI created the directory /usr/podcasts but when I use gPodder it will not let me use that folder. I chmo'd 777 to the directory.19:49
thewardenhow can I do this ?19:49
johnny i usually put stuff like that in /usr/local19:49
johnny /usr/local/shared or /shared19:49
johnnyor something19:49
thewardenoh yeah that is a good idea, however your saying I can't do this?19:49
johnnyyou should change the owner of the folder19:49
johnnyall your users who are going to use that folder should be in whatever group you want19:50
thewardenoh what group is that or do I need to create one?19:52
thewardenoh I chmoded the  podcasts directory but forgot about changing the group, so this is why?19:52
johnnyyou prolly need to create one19:55
thewardenargh, gotta be the group issue as I gave permissions but still get an error trying to get gPodder to use that directory.19:55
johnnyand then add your users to it19:56
johnnyand then, logout for your current user19:56
thewardenokay, is there a gui in Ubuntu to do this or all terminal work?19:56
johnnyfor adding groups?19:57
johnnythere is a gui19:57
johnnyaltho i personally never use it :)19:57
thewardenreally ?19:57
johnnyit's in adminstration19:57
johnnyi'm not logged into my ubuntu box.. but it's users & groups or something19:57
LaserJockyeah19:59
LaserJockI use it all the time19:59
thewardenahh I forgot about that, thanks.19:59
thewardenmm could I just use the users group ?19:59
johnnythink so20:00
thewardenokay, so I  still need to logout then log back in for the changes to take affect?20:01
johnnyyes20:01
johnnyfor your own user20:01
thewardenthis whole gui thing is taking me for a spin.. use to always being in the terminal. Mainly used OpenBSD for the most of my experience.20:02
thewardenokay20:02
johnnywell you can do the terminal thing if you want :)20:03
johnnyi always do20:03
johnnybut i have used the gui things a few times20:04
johnnyjust so i could point people to them20:04
LaserJockI like guis when they work20:04
thewardenagreed LaserJack20:04
thewardenokay I have 755 and root:users now on the directory called podcasts.20:06
thewardenI'll try logging out now and see if this works. Thanks for the help!20:07
thewardenHi. Okay I created a directory /usr/local/share/podcasts. chown root:users and chmod 755 on the directory. Added myself and other users to the users group.20:17
thewardenthen logged out of the account and re-logged back in. Still I get an error from gPodder saying "Error Moving Downloads" to this shared directory I'm trying to setup.20:18
thewardenwhat else can there be that I could be doing wrong here?? This shouldn't be hard.20:18
LaserJockthewarden: is it writable by the users group?20:18
thewardenLaserJock: ahh ops no. for now I chmod 777 on the directory. closed gPodder and loaded it again. Still get the "Error Moving Downloads".20:21
LaserJockwierd20:21
thewardengeez what could be the problem here.... done this many times on other OSs no problem.20:22
thewardenmaybe its the application20:22
LaserJockso what is the output of /usr/local/share/podcasts and groups20:22
thewardenoutput, what do you mean? you want to see /etc/groups?20:22
LaserJockno, you can just type groups20:23
LaserJocktells you what groups you belong to20:23
LaserJockjust making sure everthing is consistent20:23
thewardenthewarden adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape audio dip video plugdev users scanner fuse lpadmin admin netdev powerdev20:23
thewardendrwxrwxrwx  2 root users 4096 2008-04-05 12:53 podcasts20:24
LaserJocksure looks write20:24
LaserJocklooks like maybe a gPodder problem20:24
LaserJockheh, *right20:24
thewardenargh... and I liked that application as Miro is to bloated for my liking. Mmmmm20:25
thewardenanyone have a suggestion of a aggregater to get podcasts?20:28
thewardenmust handle video and audio20:29
thewardenyup its gPodder I would say. as I just downloaded a podcast to /usr/local/share/podcasts with Miro and it worked fine. Maybe try one more thing with gPodder to toast all my settings to start fresh and try once more.20:34
LaserJockyeah, it seems like it would be odd for gPodder to do that20:36
thewardenwhere is gpodder settings kept? I don't see a gpodder directory in ~. just a location for downloads.20:36
LaserJockwould it possibly be in .gnome2/ ?20:36
thewardenahhh found it ~/.config/.gpodder20:36
* thewarden crosses his fingers20:37
thewardennope same issue I get "Error Moving Downloads". Funny thing is I don't have anything downloaded anymore.20:39
thewardenoh well no gPodder for now.20:39
LaserJockthewarden: you might file a bug report if you have time20:41
thewardenLaserJock: sure thing, where do I go?20:41
LaserJockhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gpodder/+filebug20:41
