ksclarkeanyone know why ubuntu would pause on boot? it doesn't give me the login prompt until after I have hit a key on the keyboard04:47
netrathello i'm running ubuntu server 7.10 and i'm having some trouble with IET, iscsi enterprise target, hard freezing the server. no kernel panic or anything04:52
netratmy targets are LVM logical volumes04:53
owhnetrat: The person working on iscsi is soren.04:54
netratowh: okay, is he away now?04:55
owhnetrat: soren never sleeps, but he may be napping :)04:55
netratHAHA okay04:55
owhnetrat: I suggest you leave your IRC window open and see what gives :)04:55
netratowh: okay. i'll be waiting...04:56
owhnetrat: Perhaps you should outline what you're doing and what issues you're having.05:02
netratwell like i mentioned the iscsi targets are LVM volumes. i have one target being exported to a Win XP machine running NTFS and another target for booting CentOS with etherboot. here is my ietd.conf file http://pastebin.com/m7c0a219b05:07
netratthe ubuntu server running IET will randomly lockup with iSCSI activity. i've tried upgrading to the latest 2.6.24.4 vanilla kernel, but that didn't help either05:08
netratdiscussion groups for IET seem to be scarce05:10
netratthe server has been 100% stable before, memtest and a prime95 torture test all check out okay05:18
owhnetrat: FYI, activity tends to pick-up here in about 5 hours.05:20
netratowh okay, hopefully someone will be able to help. i really need my iSCS05:21
netratiSCSI*05:21
sorennetrat: Sorry, I haven't used iscsi at all on gutys.06:09
sorengutsy, I mean.06:09
netratsoren only 6.10?06:12
sorenEr.. No, 8.04.06:14
netratwait i'm confused, i'm running 6.10, you only have experience running IET on 8.04?06:16
netrati'm using version 0.4.16 of iscsitarget06:22
sorenI only started using iscsi on hardy, yes.06:28
netratsoren oh okay. support is hard to find for IET! no chatrooms on freenode or anything06:29
owhHi soren, I'm responsible for sending netrat here. Any suggestions where else help might appear from?06:34
sorenNo clue. Sorry.06:59

izzy_hello?10:51
izzy_anyone awake in here?10:51
Jeeves_YES!10:52
* Jeeves_ :)10:52
izzy_anyone in here know how to do LVM partition10:52
Jeeves_Nope :)10:52
izzy_dang10:52
izzy_no one seems to know x.x10:52
blue-frogizzy_: what do you need?10:53
izzy_ok well im redoing the install of ubuntu 7.1 server edition10:53
izzy_i did manual partitioning10:53
_ruben'morning' Jeeves_ ;)10:54
izzy_300 gig hd   i made  logical volumes:  home root srv  swap  and var10:54
izzy_when i go to create it says10:54
Jeeves_hoi _ruben10:54
_rubenits 7.10 btw :) </nitpick>10:54
izzy_shows the partitioned disk  LVM VG system  lv root  8.6 GB linux device mapper  #110:55
izzy_as soon as i click finish partitioning and write changes to disk10:55
izzy_red Screen   NO ROOT FILE SYSTEM is DEFINED10:55
izzy_x.x10:56
izzy_is it a error  am i just losing my mind lol10:56
faulkes- /root or /10:56
izzy_3 hours10:56
blue-frogizzy_: first.. you have a /boot partition not lvm?10:56
izzy_i do have a boot10:56
izzy_its 100.0 mb10:56
izzy_first partition is /boot  100.0 mb  primary10:56
_rubenizzy_: did you tell the installer to use the root lv for / etc? or just created a lv called "root" and assumed it'd be used for / ?10:56
blue-frogizzy_: the lvm logical volume, you created them but did you assgin a mount point?10:57
izzy_i didnt tell the installer to use the root for anything10:57
_rubenthen thats the problem10:57
izzy_i dont think i assigned the mount point  but it wont let me10:57
blue-frogizzy_: you need to do that for all your lv10:57
_rubenonce you created the lv's, you need to tell the installer what to do with them10:57
izzy_i cant find away to access it to mount it or anything10:57
_rubenonce you created the lv's .. the lv's should show up in the list of available partitions10:58
izzy_hmm10:58
izzy_from what i was told10:58
izzy_x.x10:58
izzy_i was to make 2 partitions10:58
izzy_both prime10:58
izzy_2nd one was to be LVM10:58
izzy_and all my var swap srv root and home go in that10:59
_rubenso far so good10:59
izzy_wish i could take a screen shot and somehow upload it on to my site x.x or email n show ya whats going on10:59
izzy_the overview of currently configured partitions and moun points.  shows11:00
izzy_LVM VG system LV home 4.3 gb  linux device mapper11:00
izzy_#1 4.3 gb11:00
Deepsno camera phone?11:00
izzy_thats all  so it doesnt show mount points11:00
Deepsor webcam?11:00
Deepsor digicam?11:00
izzy_lol all those got then11:00
izzy_but lcd with a webcam ?11:00
_rubenizzy_: because you didnt specify one, it wont do that for you (it wouldnt know how)11:00
izzy_so how can i put the mount points in ?11:01
_rubenizzy_: select that lv line and hit enter11:01
izzy_i do it just flashes then goes back to the same screen the overview11:01
_rubenthen perhaps the line underneath it .. dont recall exactly on top of my head11:01
izzy_ok that did something11:01
izzy_use as:        Do not use11:02
blue-frogit might be a bug. I remember having problems with LVM and ubuntu install11:02
_rubenselect that line and hit enter11:02
izzy_ok11:02
_rubenblue-frog: nah, its just the debian installer being not very user frienldy ;)11:02
izzy_got ext 3 ext 2 and so on11:02
_rubenwhich fs to choose is up to you11:02
_rubenusualy one'd go for ext311:02
izzy_for the boot i was using ext 211:02
izzy_didnt need the journal11:03
_rubenthats a fairly common decision indeed11:03
blue-frogoh he's in yes ok11:03
izzy_ok so for like srv for ftp server i need to do that for all of then right11:03
izzy_ok so now it says  use as  ext2 file system  mount point use as root right?11:03
_rubenyeah, you need to do those steps for each lv you created11:04
_rubenif you selected the root lv yes, otherwise select the apropriate dir11:04
izzy_wow lol talk abouta nice installer x.x11:04
_rubenyou mentioned lv home before, so i'd mount that under /home11:04
izzy_i reinstalled over 200 times this week11:04
izzy_cus of this11:04
_rubenizzy_: well .. its *is* marked as expert mode or smth similar11:04
izzy_lol ya11:05
izzy_i spent 40 dallors on a ubuntu server book11:05
izzy_cus i got tired of doing it over n over11:05
izzy_and page 20 goes over this but it leaves this all out11:05
izzy_doesnt tell u how to mount or anything11:05
_rubencrappy book that is then11:05
izzy_i was in the regular ubuntu irc room for days asking got 100 different answers lol11:06
blue-frogizzy_: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/views/linux/libraryview.jsp?topic_by=All+topics+and+related+products&sort_order=asc&lcl_sort_order=asc&search_by=lpi+exam+topic&search_flag=true&type_by=Tutorials&show_abstract=true&start_no=1&sort_by=Title&end_no=100&show_all=false&S_TACT=105AGX59&S_CMP=GR-LPI11:06
blue-frogwill give you all the info you need to know11:06
blue-frogfor free11:06
blue-frogyou just need to register11:06
izzy_thanks11:07
izzy_on that site u mean ? or on here?11:07
izzy_so most people use ext2 for root as well as /boot11:08
izzy_?11:08
izzy_do you suggest using ReiserFS  for /var / and home or no ?11:10
=== `6og is now known as Kamping_Kaiser
_rubenizzy_: i'd go for ext3 for all (and optionally ext2 for boot)11:10
_rubenxfs might be a more suited fs for large storage means11:11
izzy_ok  im planing to use this as FTP and webserver11:11
_rubenext3 is probably good enough for that11:13
izzy_now can i ask ya this  ftp and webservers need a /srv partition correct?11:13
_rubenwe have /srv on our suse based machines, not on ubuntu tho .. web resides in /var/www by default11:14
izzy_ok so i should make var bigger and just get rid of /srv then ?11:15
izzy_my var is only 6.4 gb and /srv is 275 gb11:15
izzy_sry for all the stupid questions ive been a windows user longer then linux just got in to openbsd about 8months ago so not firmilar with it all yet11:17
_rubenwell, defaults are just what they are: defaults .. if you want your http/ftp stuff under /srv, then there's nothing that stop you from doing so ;) ... /srv is part of the FHS11:18
_ruben/srv/ Site-specific data which is served by the system. <== sounds appropriate enough for http/ftp files ;)11:18
izzy_i want to set it up the best way without having to reconfigure the system entirely11:19
izzy_which would you say is the best route?11:19
_rubenizzy_: thats a bit hard for me to say .. im currently in the progress of migrating from suse to ubuntu .. they both have different views (default settings and all) for certain stuff .. havent made up my mind on which routes to go yet11:21
izzy_ya i know that feeling all to well11:22
izzy_ive setup alot of windowsNT with linux suse stuff11:22
izzy_i just want to get away from windows im tired of then lol11:22
_rubenhehe11:22
_rubenhmm .. brb .. smth came up here ..11:23
izzy_ok11:23
izzy_well now its installing the base system so Everything must be right ^^ :)11:29
_rubenback11:36
izzy_me to11:37
izzy_wow11:37
izzy_network just crashed lol11:37
izzy_i hate linksys somedays x.x11:37
_rubenhehe11:37
izzy_it was funny cus it went to look for mirrors11:37
izzy_my gf runs upstairs shes playing xbox360 live and shes like xbox just froze11:37
izzy_i look over its looking for mirrors had to login to linksys router n release the ip and renew it11:38
spiekeysoren: do you or have you ever used some M$ Exchange replacement with syncing mails with outlook clients?11:38
izzy_i have to do it every week atlease once11:38
spiekeyOpenXchange or Group-E or something?11:38
_rubenizzy_: jikes11:38
izzy_lol11:38
izzy_only has happened since i went wifi11:39
izzy_no clue why11:39
izzy_now another question  upon installing  dns server and lamp server r the two i need for webserver and ftp correct?11:39
_rubendns server isnt really required for running web/ftp .. kinda depends on your needs though11:40
izzy_i want to be able to see my webpage / site from across the globe anywhere outside the home network11:41
izzy_want to be able to load ftp from outside the house along with inside the home network11:42
_rubendns server is only needed for when you want to host a nameserver for your (or other's) domain(s) .. which *usualy* isnt the case for home users11:43
izzy_my domain is a .com  so would i need dns or no?11:43
_rubeni doubt that, you'd know if you would ;)11:44
izzy_so all i need is lamp server and i should be ok ?11:44
_rubenlamp is what you need for serving html+php using apache .. ftp is a seperate install (no task for that (yet))11:45
izzy_ya im gonna run pure ftp on it  but my .com is like 80 html pages11:47
izzy_with some php11:47
izzy_i can always install the lamp server later lol :)11:48
izzy_well thanks ruben ^^ uve saved yet another new ubuntu user from sucide :)11:49
_rubenthat bad eh? ;)11:50
izzy_i used ubuntu desktop to learn about it that was devastating lol11:50
izzy_it froze up  lost my mouse and keyboard alot of times locked up11:51
_rubennasty11:51
izzy_ya than i learnt about ubuntu irc lol11:51
izzy_and realized it was impossible to find anyone in there at any time that wasnt super busy11:52
izzy_before that i was using Openbsd  which wasnt bad but drove me somewat crazy11:52
izzy_now i guess if everything works good ill change most of the laptops over to ubuntu lol11:54
izzy_i want to get out of windows b4 it consumes my soul again11:54
_rubennever liked the *bsd flavours .. played with freebsd ages ago .. just didnt feel "right" .. currently using windows on desktop and linux (ubuntu and some suse boxes i sttil need to migrate) on servers11:55
izzy_ya id like to do a nice setup here in the future i got total of 11 computers  1 gaming 1 ftp/website based   1 Ubuntu server 7.1 lol  and 3 window laptops for remotes in to corp. stuff and 1 for truck driving11:56
izzy_plus 4 that somehow got water damaged11:57
izzy_in the middle of a Dry spell in the summer  -.-11:57
izzy_though to tell u something i didnt know it rained mountain dew11:57
izzy_cusin couldnt sit down for 3 days after i got hit lol  old branch from a tree does wonders :)11:58
izzy_it*11:58
_rubenheheh11:59
izzy_so where are you from ruben ?11:59
izzy_if u dont mind me asking11:59
_rubenmountain dew .. heard a friend of mine talk about it the other day .. tho i think he had it imported or smth12:00
_rubennetherlands12:00
izzy_ahh12:01
izzy_moutain dew its a yellow pop12:02
izzy_infact have a bottle next to me12:02
izzy_made by pepsi  its yellow taste good lots of sugar and will wire u for atlease 3 hours lol12:02
izzy_its like a energy pop drink12:02
_rubenAs of 2006, Mountain Dew was the fourth-best-selling carbonated soft drink in the United States, behind only Coca-Cola Classic, Pepsi-Cola, and Diet Coke.12:03
_rubenquite popular one ;)12:03
izzy_oh yes ;)12:04
izzy_pizza places sell the major quanities of it12:04
izzy_over 11 billion pizza places in the united states sells that product12:04
izzy_with over 3 billion new stores opening up each year selling it12:04
omnz0rtastes nothing like dew12:05
izzy_heh12:05
izzy_question  about root user12:06
_ruben!root12:06
ubotuDo not try to guess the root password, that is impossible. Instead, realise the truth... there is no root password. Then you will see that it is 'sudo' that grants you access and not the root password. Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo12:06
izzy_ya12:07
izzy_but12:07
izzy_if will ask u for a password correct ?12:07
izzy_like if u do a sudo something12:07
izzy_it should ask for ur user password that ur log in to right?12:07
_rubencorrect12:07
_rubenatleast, thats the default behaviour12:07
izzy_so if userone  pass is us1  and someone else is us3 and there using us1s account n they type in us3 it shouldnt go threw right?12:08
_rubenizzy_: eh? not following im afraid :p12:40
izzy_oh i was just wondering if two users have two different passwords lol12:44
izzy_they cant be interchanged and used on other users account without that users account password12:45
_rubenizzy_: sudo (by default) requires password of the user currently logged in, and doesnt care about any other users that might be present12:46
izzy_ya thats what i was trying to say12:46
izzy_but if i wanted to i could assign a password for sudo right?12:46
_rubenyou *could* assign a password to the root user (in fact, i do that on my systems), but its not recommended ;)12:47
_rubeni do this because my local users dont have passwords12:47
_rubenssh key authentication12:47
izzy_ahh12:48
izzy_i use to have ssh key auth for the other systems like windows using putty12:48
izzy_but i cant figure out how to do it on this12:48
izzy_cus it has no auth_key file12:49
_rubenprivate key goes in $HOME/.ssh/identify (default private key that is) .. and public keys goes in $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys212:54
izzy_oh12:55
faulkes-iirc isn't identity v1?12:55
_rubenfaulkes-: hmm .. wouldnt know really .. would have to check12:56
faulkes-$HOME/.ssh/id_{rsa,rda}.pub12:56
_rubenyou're right12:56
_rubenour use of identity probably predates the use of ssh2 ;)12:57
izzy_heh12:57
* _ruben adds another thing to his todo list .. *sigh*12:57
_rubendamn thing only increases12:58
izzy_lol12:58
izzy_welcome to Life ^^12:58
_rubenyeah12:58
_rubeni get a fair ammount of stuff on my todo list done, except that i add things to it much faster :p12:58
izzy_lol12:58
izzy_so what kind of servers do u run ruben?12:59
_rubeninfrastructure mostly: firewalls, loadbalancers, mailservers, monitoring .. and at home: fileservers13:00
faulkes-yeah, the entire todo list seems to grow daily vs. the stuff I knock off it13:00
_rubenfaulkes-: sucks eh? ;)13:00
izzy_lol i just want a simplified13:01
izzy_server that can handle ftp from any computer13:01
izzy_and ftp from this computer to the server in html format to appear on my web site13:01
izzy_^^ thats all i ask lol13:01
izzy_but the list keeps growing x.x13:01
faulkes-ruben: eh, not such a bad thing, I get to play with nice gear13:02
faulkes-and drink alot13:02
_rubenfaulkes-: im not much of a drinker, but do get to play with nicer gear by the day13:02
_rubenfaulkes-: kinda like you i'll be getting a nice san to play with in a while :)13:02
izzy_i cant imagine the pain in the head it must be to setup a mail server13:03
_rubenizzy_: to do it right surely requires some effort ;)13:04
izzy_yup agreed there13:04
izzy_somedays i miss windows lol13:04
izzy_so if i want to ping oh i dont know google.com to be sure i got a good ping how do i type it in so it doesnt ping it 1000 times ?13:06
faulkes-ruben: speaking of which, I set it for testing yesterday13:08
faulkes- /dev/sdb1             1.8T  196M  1.7T   1% /data13:08
faulkes-one of the LV's ;)13:08
faulkes-izzy: I would suggest reading the ping man page, which has an explicit option for the count13:09
izzy_i did once lol13:11
izzy_and it became bad13:11
* _ruben whispers: -c13:11
izzy_it pinged 10000 times b4 it stoped13:11
_rubenit pings until you stop it13:11
_rubenit shouldnt stop at 10000 unless you told it so13:12
_rubenfaulkes-: i read smth about that in my backscroll the other day :)13:12
izzy_i just typed in ping www.google.com lol13:12
_rubenfaulkes-: guess 'the other day' was today then :p13:12
faulkes-I'm glad it was a relatively trivial setup once I got networking done13:13
izzy_3 packets transmitted 3 rec time 1998ms thats along time isnt it o.o13:14
* faulkes- notes that dell, dell docs and former consultants all need to be taken out and shot13:14
_ruben99% of our stuff is dell ;)13:15
faulkes-wait till I get my hands on that label maker, HQ is gonna be less than pleased at the cartridge costs13:15
_rubendesktop/server wise that is13:15
Jeeves_!dell--13:16
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about dell-- - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi13:16
faulkes-don't get me wrong, love my dell's13:16
_rubenhavent had much trouble with dell so far13:16
faulkes-the docs on the gear we have from dell are not as, shall we say, current as they should be13:16
faulkes-and then of course add in the rebranded cisco-lite it's almost IOS but not quite switches13:17
_rubenwe ran on homebrew hardware for years .. then had a few hp server .. but for some reason shortly after that the decision was made (by upper management) that everything would be dell from then on13:17
faulkes-simplifies infrastructure to a point13:17
faulkes-but networking gear should come from a networking company ;)13:18
_ruben:)13:18
izzy_well ruben ^^ :) thanks for the help tonight im sure ill see you on later this afternoon for me its time to crash the sun is coming up and im a nite walker lol13:19
_rubenfaulkes-: which san did you happen to get your hands on btw?13:19
faulkes-promise vtrak m500i13:19
faulkes-is what it turned out to be13:19
_rubenizzy_: i'll be here for another 2 hrs or so and then i'll head home :)13:19
faulkes-I was initially told it was "only low end"13:19
faulkes-and well, ok, it's not exactly a netapp13:20
faulkes-but still, it's 6.5TB that's been sitting around for a good year unused13:20
izzy_ill be sleeping for atlease 8 to 9 hours lol i usally wake up in 6 hours from now13:20
izzy_ill take a 1.0 TB from anyone that offers it ;) :D13:20
_rubeni'll be playing with a dell/equallogic box .. 14 sas disks in raid5/raid10/raid5013:20
* faulkes- nods13:21
izzy_300 gb >.>13:21
faulkes-iirc this has 15 disks @ 456gb each13:21
_ruben456? not 400?13:21
faulkes-apparently or so it reports13:21
izzy_nite ruben and faulkes ^^ take care13:22
_rubenizzy_: i got 2 machines at home that are both around 1TB each ;)13:22
_rubenizzy_: g'nite13:22
faulkes-I'm not going to argue with it about a measly 50gb ;)13:22
izzy_thanks for the help ruben ^^13:22
izzy_anyone that wants to send me 1 tb :-D13:22
izzy_:d13:22
_rubenhehe13:22
izzy_ill gladly give my address lol13:22
_rubendisks are cheap these days13:22
izzy_i now i seen a western digital on new egg for13:23
_ruben750GB for aprox 100 euro these days13:23
faulkes-sorry, we already have plans for it to be a our torren^H^H^H database server13:23
izzy_200 bucks for 1tb13:23
faulkes-s/server/storage13:23
faulkes-disk is cheap13:23
_rubensata that is, sas is still kinda pricey13:23
izzy_this 300 i got is sata13:23
faulkes-now I just need all the extra hba's to arrive for the blades13:24
faulkes-although I am just using open-iscsi right now13:24
_rubenhba arent all that spectacular from what i've heard13:24
faulkes-probably continue to use open-iscsi as well13:24
faulkes-I'll see what the tcp off-loading can do for perf. but otherwise, unless it's a huge difference13:24
_rubenif your machine is powerfull enough and has enough spare cpu cycles, software initiator will outperform a hba13:24
faulkes-heh, yeah, I don't think cpu usage is an issue for these machines13:25
_rubentcp offloading is smth i plan to look into .. dont think i have any hardware which supports that yet tho13:25
faulkes-dual, dual core 3.0ghz xeon's13:25
izzy_Dam13:25
izzy_i was just ready to hit the hay13:25
izzy_x.x13:25
izzy_phone rang13:25
izzy_grr13:25
_rubencant wait go play with the new server .. dual quad-core with 32GB ram .. 6x300GB sas .. and then the nas hooked up to it as a bonus :p13:26
faulkes-that'll be nice13:27
faulkes-we're going to need to upgrade the ram in these things sometime soon for what we have planned13:27
faulkes-on 4gb a piece right now13:27
faulkes-s/on/only13:27
_rubenthe ram came in the other day .. tho instead of 8 4GB modules, they shipped 8 2x2GB modules .. only 8 slots .. so sent it back13:31
_rubendell blades? we're looking into those for the slightly longer term (as a base of virtualization, as is the dual quad-core i'll be playing with)13:34
* faulkes- nods13:37
faulkes-1955's right now13:37
faulkes-not bad13:37
_ruben1955 .. i think thats what we (me and my manager) were looking at as well13:39
_rubenwe currently use 860's as web servers and 2850/2950 for db13:39
_rubenand an occasional 195013:39
izzy_nite catch ya all later ^^13:40
_rubenthe dual quad-core is a 2950 i think13:40
_rubenizzy_: nite ;)13:40

elventearHello, I am trying to set up a server where the OS disks are on RAID 1 and whenever one of the disks fail, the server should be able to still boot. I've successfully setup everything except the last part. Whenever I yank out one of the drives from the server the system will fail upon reaching initramfs. I think the problem lies in the fact that the raid will fail to assemble if one of the drives is missing and requires using --run15:41

elventearI just needed to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/85-mdadm.rules and remove the '--no-degraded' option to make this work. This was quite obscure, I had been looking a solution at least for the past 3 days.17:24
elventearAnd update initramfs17:25
DBAmethystgood to hear there elventear17:25
_rubenhmm .. that'd be an odd "feature" .. not being able to boot a degraded array17:41
faulkes-actually, that's been something plaguing raid1 for quite some time17:43
* faulkes- has noted it more than a number of times on the forums17:43
ScottKIt's by design so that you don't accidentally boot a damaged array and lose data.17:44
ScottKI'm not saying it's a good design, but it's not by accident.17:44
faulkes-noted17:45
_rubenhmm .. sounds fair enough, more or less ;)17:54
_rubenmust admit its a tricky situation at best indeed17:54

elventearHello. Is it possible to configure Ubuntu to treat RAID devices as partitionables from boot?20:52
N6REJafternoon folks... I'm trying to setup a 7.1 server on my LAN.  it will be used for just about everything, including LOCAL only mail.  Its asking for the fqdn.. I have xp, *nix, and OSx systems on this networks so I need something that is network friendly.21:09
N6REJthe systems name is Annabelle21:10
N6REJwhen I say "local" mail, I mean lan only mail.  I should clarify that.21:10
N6REJanyone know the best way to do this?21:11
pr0leN6REJ: http://www.redhat.com/magazine/025nov06/features/dns/21:20
pr0leyou'll need to adjust for ubuntu of course, but it works well21:20
N6REJpr0le: ty21:20
pr0leI think it should tell you about how to set up a domain like 'myhome.lan'21:20
pr0lepart 2: http://www.redhatmagazine.com/2006/12/15/dns/21:21
N6REJyeah.. i c.. ok... I told the mail server just "annabelle" but it should be able to be changed if it needs it.21:21
N6REJ!server21:34
ubotuUbuntu Server Edition is a release of Ubuntu designed especially for server environments, including a server-specific !kernel and no !GUI. The install CD contains many server applications. Current !LTS version is 6.06. For more info see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ServerFaq/ - The #ubuntu-server channel provides specific support21:34
N6REJ!vnc21:44
ubotuVNC is a protocol for remote desktop. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH describes how to use it securely.  It works best over fast connections, otherwise look at !FreeNX21:44
N6REJ!FreeNX21:45
ubotuFreeNX is advanced remote desktop technology. For more information and install instructions, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX21:45
sorenN6REJ: Er... What are you doing? :)21:45
N6REJhiya soren!! long time no see21:46
N6REJi'm hooking up a lan server... but its not going to have an accessible con, so i'm looking at how I can vkvm it21:46
sorenYeah, I mean: What's up with doing all the !vnc, !freenx etc. stuff?21:46
N6REJI know I can ssh in, but there are times I prefer the desktop21:46
N6REJoh, looking at the suggestions for software to use.. .here.. tell soren about !FreeNX21:47
N6REJ!FreeNX > Soren21:47
sorenI know about freenx.21:47
N6REJits been ages... did you get the beep?21:47
N6REJI don't :D21:47
sorenthe beep?21:47
N6REJyou got a suggestion on which protocol to use?21:48
* N6REJ nm its not important :D I was just querying the bot for suggestions21:48
sorenEr... what?21:48
sorenWhat do you mean "beep"?21:48
N6REJoh, when I get a directed response it "beeps" me.21:49
N6REJsoren like that21:49
sorenAh.21:49
sorenI'm on the server team. I don't do beeps. :)21:49
N6REJits been ions since I setup an ubuntu server21:49
N6REJhahahah21:49
N6REJkk21:49
N6REJwell basically what I want is a simple lan server, accessible from the various platforms that I have in the house, and be able to access the "desktop" if I want to, as a kvm would21:50
N6REJI'll primarily use ssh but I'd like the option.21:50
N6REJKISS is very important21:50
N6REJThere used to be step-by-step on this.21:51
N6REJsoren: I noticed "synergy" also.. I have no idea which is best.21:52
N6REJI think my biggest problem is going to be that all the platforms are VERY differnt.. x32, x64, OSX 32, OSX 64, *Nix 32, *Nix 64 LOL21:53
N6REJsoren: you got any recommendations?21:56
sorenNot really. I just use ssh.21:57
N6REJsoren: ok, well i'll try freenx, worst it can do is not work as I expect :D21:57
N6REJsoren: oh I do have one quick question if you will please21:57
N6REJI named my server "annabelle" its going to serve mail for the LAN only... the mail will never come to/from the net.  what do I use for a fqdn if anything other then "Annabelle"?21:58
faulkes-soren: we still in need of 8.04 iscsi testing?21:59
good_danaN6REJ: annabelle.domain.local22:05
N6REJgood_dana: ok, what do I change since i've already completed the installation?22:05
N6REJI need to tell apache, and the mail server22:05
N6REJgood_dana: i checked all the boxes when I installed.22:05
good_danaN6REJ: i'm not sure, i dont have much experience configuring those, i just know what your fqdn should be22:06
N6REJgood_dana: good enough.. tyvm22:06
N6REJgood_dana: mails the least important service on that server22:07
