sudobashhey is there a way to run: route add default gw 192.168.1.1 to a xubuntu machine as root at startup?00:24
sudobashor is there a config somewhere i can can add the gateway to00:25
sudobashthe route00:25
sudobashHey LjL are you around?00:26
ere4siyou can set the gateway up in /etc/network/interfaces00:26
sudobashthanks00:27
sudobashhow do you reset the config without having to restart?00:31
sudobashor reinitialize00:32
ere4sisudo /etc/init.d/networking restart   in a terminal00:34
ere4sisudobash: ^^00:34
sudobashawesome00:34
ere4si:)00:34
sudobashnow it doesnt seem to work the same as route add default gw 192.168.1.100:40
sudobashbecause that config doesnt let me ping google... but the route trick does00:40
sudobashis there a way to run the route command at startup i have done it before for this time i have ran scripts at the startup of GDM00:41
sudobashbut just after the user logs would work if the script can run at root level00:42
sudobashi had a screwed up installation once that would corrupt Xorg and also GDM so both had to be reinstalled through terminal but I managed to write a shell script to stop gdm right before it actually had a chance to corrupt anything and could run startx00:44
sudobashbut if i could run sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1 to that it would work probably00:45
ere4siyou could put the script in /etc/rc2.d/rc.local00:45
sudobashyeah thats it or /etc/rc.local right?00:45
sudobashwhats the difference?00:46
ere4sino - /etc/rc2.d/rc.local00:46
ere4sithe user runlevel default is 200:46
sudobashwell it has to run as sudo but without a password00:47
sudobashroot00:47
sudobash i mean00:47
sudobashtrying it now00:49
LetsGo67How do I remove PPPoEconf system changes?01:06
StroganoffLetsGo67: sudo apt-get purge pppoeconf01:08
Stroganoffif this isn't enough, then i'm sorry for i dont know01:08
LetsGo67Stroganoff, qu'est-ce que cela fait?01:09
Stroganoffenglish please01:09
LetsGo67What happens after running such a command?01:09
Stroganoffpppoeconf gets uninstalled including all its config files01:09
LetsGo67Good, what about the "load this on startup" stuff?01:10
Stroganoffdepends on what you mean by stuff01:10
Stroganoffyou can change startup services with boot-up manager: sudo apt-get install bum01:10
LetsGo67It set up my computer to automatically run PPPoEconf on startup01:10
Stroganoffdid you do that manually? if so: revert it! ;D01:11
LetsGo67Ubuntu 8.04 is supposed to get Vista security?  No, not manual.01:12
Stroganoffvista security? what is this?01:12
Stroganoffjust purge pppoeconf and see how it goes01:12
LetsGo67What am I looking for in bum, anyways?01:12
Stroganoffpppoeconf01:12
Stroganoffare you kind of dumb or are you just pretending?01:13
LetsGo67Not there.01:13
Stroganoffis there nothing with ppp?01:13
Stroganoffhave you purged already? than its gone.01:13
Stroganoffcongrats01:13
LetsGo67By "Vista security" I mean: instead of running an entire app as root, it is run at user, then later can be run as sudo.01:13
LetsGo67IE: synaptic and networks.01:14
StroganoffLetsGo67: that is default in unix since 196801:14
LetsGo67The "security"?01:14

LetsGo67How, TheSheep?01:17
TheSheepLetsGo67: just enable autologin01:17
TheSheepactually, no, it will still have password, but he won't need it01:17
TheSheepin the login window settings01:17
LetsGo67autologin, self-explanatory?01:17
Stroganoffis it possible with multiple users in gdm, TheSheep?01:18
Stroganofflike in xp where you just select a user?01:18
Stroganoffi'm aware of autologin ONE particular user.01:18
LetsGo67That's what I'm talking about!  :)01:18
Stroganoffi'm just asking because i didnt use GDM in a long time01:18
TheSheepStroganoff: I'm not sure, I think it's not possible with gdm without some advanced black magic01:18
LetsGo67Mais où est donc AutoLogin?01:19
Stroganoffwat?01:19

LetsGo67Non, Xfce est trop simple et il y a plein de bogues.  J'utilise 7.1001:21
TheSheepLetsGo67: just run 'sudo gdmsetup' from terminal01:21
LetsGo67Merci.01:22
TheSheepLetsGo67: btw, je ne parle pas français ;)01:22

jcgrv06Hello. Has anybody here installed xubuntu on a ThinkPad 240?15:58
maxamillionnot i15:59
The-KernelASk your question anyways jcgrv0616:01
The-KernelWe may be able to still help you.16:01
jcgrv06I installed xubuntu last weekend. I have now dual boot w/W2K. This laptop has a 10.4" screen, 800x600 is native but is capable of 1024x768. I can scroll in Windows just by moving the cursor towards the border.16:02
jcgrv06xubuntu only allows 800x600. I have reconfigured X, set pixel depth to 16 from 24 and added 1024x768 as a valid resolution, but didn't help.16:03
jcgrv06I haven't tried an external monitor yet, but it'd be nice if it behaved like in W2K16:03
The-Kernelwhat driver is installed, and what video card do you have?16:04
Iskrdoes the video card use shared memory?16:04
jcgrv06Driver is the default one for NeoMagic 12816:04
jcgrv06No, videocard has 2MB dedicated16:04
Iskrongly 2mb?16:04
Iskrmaybe it needs more16:04
The-Kernelhaha16:04
Iskrtry to assign more memory16:04
The-Kernelhey, 2 mb works.16:04
Iskrwell in my case it needed 16 mb16:05
The-KernelI'm using abotu that much right now16:05
Iskrto show 1024x76816:05
jcgrv06no, there is no way to assign more memory. 1024x768 + 16M is possible in Windows16:05
jcgrv06Probably this is a limitation in xubuntu16:05
The-Kerneljcgrv06 have you looked in the BIOS?16:05
Iskrjcgrv06, it is possible16:05
Iskri did it16:05
jcgrv06Same BIOS lets me boot in W2K w/1024x76816:06
IskrTheSheep,16:06
Iskrhow it was that command16:06
Iskrfor reconfiguring X?16:06
The-Kernelsudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver16:06
jcgrv06sudo dpkg-reconfigure xconf.org-server16:06
jcgrv06:)16:06
The-Kernelor xserver-xorg16:06
The-Kernelcan't ever remember which one it is16:07
jcgrv06I tried several times. I need to try with an external monitor16:07
jcgrv06800x600 is too limited, I can't see the Apply / Cancel buttons sometimes16:07
ablomenxserver-xorg16:08
ablomenah The-Kernel already said that, didnt read that ;)16:08
jcgrv06yes, I went through the motions, messing up the settings (it defaulted to Alsa) and manage to put it the way it was.16:08
The-KernelI don't know about you, but the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure xconf.org-server doesn't even work for me16:09
Iskrmaybe it's this!16:09
Iskr=D16:09
The-Kerneljcgrv06 did you assign it 16 mb of memory?16:09
jcgrv06no, I didn't. But again, Windows drivers allow me to scroll around with 2MB. You need 1024x768*2 bytes = 1,572,864 bytes = 1.5MB16:14
Iskrwell16:16
Iskrmaybe more video memory is necessary for other reasons16:16
Iskrand maybe windows assigns it wighout letting you knwo16:16
jcgrv06no, because 1024x768 is unavailable if you go to 24 pixel depth16:17
jcgrv06that'd go over 2MB16:17
TheSheepjcgrv06: you can enable scrolling by adding the 'virtual' option to your xorg.conf16:22
TheSheepjcgrv06: see 'man xorg.conf' for details16:22
jcgrv06Thanks, TheSheep. I will try that16:27
jcgrv06Also, I'm getting approx. half the speed with my wireless card.16:28
jcgrv06than with Windows. Perhaps I should use ndiswrapper to wrap the Windows driver?16:28
TheSheepno idea16:29
jcgrv06has anybody compared xubuntu's desktop performance with other ubuntu derivatives?16:32
TheSheepjcgrv06: how wuld you measure that?16:35
TheSheepjcgrv06: the computational performance is identical, as they are based on the same core16:35
jcgrv06Overall responsiveness. Boot time, time it takes to open File Manager and navigate16:36
n-iCehow do I update my video drivers??16:36
TheSheepn-iCe: except for some proprietary drivers, they are all shipped with the kernel/xorg16:41
TheSheepn-iCe: so they are updated with the whole system16:41

zoredache!patients19:37
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about patients - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi19:37
Banan_wiihttp://www.xfce-look.org/content/show.php/NNM-NG?content=6064319:38
Banan_wiii want this19:38
gaurdroin 7.10 it is /usr/share/themes/19:38
zoredache!patience19:39
ubotuThe people here are volunteers, your attitude should reflect that. Answers are not always available. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IrcGuidelines19:39
Banan_wiii have folder /usr/share/themes19:39
Banan_wiithere are other themes19:39
gaurdromake sure you can write to the directory you're putting the themes in.19:39
Banan_wiii unpacked it into this folder from root19:39
gaurdrolook at the contents of themerc, it may contain information about what themes are installed or give a hint as to what to do to get xubuntu to recognize the themes.19:40
gaurdroit may be as simple as <ctrl>-<alt>-<Backspace>19:40
Banan_wiihmm i think i know what might be the prob19:41
Banan_wiigive me 5 sec i will write result19:41
Banan_wii...19:43
Banan_wiiok19:47
Banan_wiiit works19:47
Banan_wiithx for all19:47
gaurdroand your solution was?19:47
Banan_wiido it carefully19:47
Banan_wiiand <ctlr><alt><bksp>19:48
gaurdro...19:48
Banan_wii:D19:48
gaurdronow a question,  do you know what  <ctlr><alt><bksp> actually does?19:48
Banan_wiiyes19:48
Banan_wiiit resets graphical interface and session19:48
gaurdroyes,  the underlying command to it is to restart the xserver.19:49
Banan_wiihehe19:50
Banan_wiibut u know whats the most phunny thing?19:50
Banan_wiii figured out that i want to change UI rather than theme :]19:51
Banan_wiithey are hard to tell apart from newbie :)19:51
Banan_wiiBTW how to add new icons?19:54
Banan_wiiis there /icons/ folder?19:54
gaurdrothere's a wonderful command for searching from the terminal.19:54
gaurdroto index the computer you type  'sudo slocate -d'19:55
gaurdrothe to search for something type 'sudo slocate anything'19:55
gaurdroyou may have to install it using apt-get.19:55
Banan_wiihey -d dont work19:55
gaurdrooops,  sorry it's -u.19:55
zoredacheyou shouldn't need to use sudo to search for something...19:55
Banan_wiiok indexing19:56
gaurdroslocate checks permissions and won't display anything you can't get to,  on my computer it won't display anything I can't write to.19:56
gaurdroand you need it to run the drive indexing regardless of how it's setup.19:57
Banan_wiiWoW !!19:57
Banan_wiiits really fast19:57
Banan_wiigr8 tool19:57
Banan_wiiBTW is "sudo thunar" safe?19:59
zoredache!enter19:59
ubotuPlease try to keep your questions/responses on one line - don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation!19:59
Banan_wiiok20:00
zoredacheit is as safe as the user behind it.  You can completely trash your OS with a single incorrect operation20:00
Banan_wiibut not really unsafer than su -?20:01
zoredacheit is all the same really...  su, sudo, gksu, whatever you are running will have root permissions (unless you specified something else)20:02
Banan_wiikk20:03
Banan_wiianother question20:03
Banan_wiiis it needed to do CTRLALTBKSP after copying new fonts to see it?20:03
gaurdroprobably,  I think the xserver only reads the font directory on startup20:04
Banan_wiiso yes?20:04
Banan_wiihmm i can see it in openoffice20:05
gaurdroI dunno,  I would open openoffice and see if it can see the new fonts20:07
Banan_wiii need them for system ...20:13
Banan_wiiits still /usr/share/fonts/?20:13
TheSheepBanan_wii: you need to put them into the .fonts directory in your home and run 'fc-cache' in terminal20:20
Banan_wiiit cant be /usr/share/fonts?20:20
TheSheepit can20:21
Banan_wiiok20:21
Banan_wiithx20:21
TheSheepbut it's not nice to have to run root commands every time you want to add a font20:21
Banan_wiiwhy?20:21
Banan_wiinp for me20:22
TheSheepevery time you run a command as root a little penguin dies ;)20:22
gaurdro/usr/share/*  is generally for system wide things but if you only have a single user equivalent folders are in your home directory.20:22
Banan_wii:D20:22
TheSheepno eally, you will make a mistkae one time and break your system20:22
Banan_wiiomg what a cool text :)20:22
Banan_wiihmm i must think about sort of Time Machine then :D20:23
TheSheepsorry, tired20:23
Banan_wiihey which is the name of first usb mass storage?20:24
Banan_wiiand whats the name of FAT if i want to use mount -t?20:26
Banan_wiioh drop it then i will just run winXP ... still left on my HD20:27
Banan_wiibye20:27
gaurdroI'm soo glad my testing machine has an excellent internet connection,  I've averaged 100 updates per day running hardy beta.20:37
AnnirakHow do I determine which update is requiring a reboot before I reboot?20:53
PsynoKhi0you should get a message when you need to20:54
PsynoKhi0the orange update icon turns into 2 round arrows20:54
PsynoKhi0usually, only kernel updates20:54
AnnirakPsynoKhi0: I know that I need to restart.  But I want to know what caused it.20:55
PsynoKhi0oh oops20:55
PsynoKhi0WHICH udpate20:55
AnnirakKernel and libc updates normally, I know.20:55
PsynoKhi0ok read too fast, as usual...20:55
AnnirakEh, happens20:55
PsynoKhi0Annirak: yup... only unusually often in my case :|20:57
PsynoKhi0some language files can do that too20:57
TheSheepAnnirak: you don't have to reboot after the update20:58
TheSheepAnnirak: it just won't take effect unti you do20:58
AnnirakTheSheep: Ok, but how do I see a list of packages which are calling for the restart?20:58
TheSheepAnnirak: I don't think you can easily20:59
theronfrom the live CD, is there a CLI installer that I can use after the cd has booted up?20:59
theronI can't seem to get X running on the live cd.20:59
TheSheeptheron: no, use the alternate cd for that20:59
theronTheSheep: ok thx.20:59
x9xhi21:07
TheSheephello x9x21:09
x9xare there a page somewhere that lists what components xubuntu is made of?21:10
x9xhi TheSheep21:10
x9xmore detailed than that is use xfce4 instead of gnome ?21:11
TheSheepx9x: you can look at the deps of the xubuntu-desktop package at packages.ubuntu.com21:12
TheSheepx9x: that's 1st hand info21:13
TheSheepx9x: it changes from version to version21:13
x9xaha21:15
slimjimflimhi, wondering if anybody knows anything about audio not working w/ adobe flash player21:23
slimjimflimit's really starting to become a drag21:24
x9xhmm...  how do I do that? when I search for xubuntu-desktop in the packages.ubuntu.com webpage I get to http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/xubuntu-desktop21:25
x9xam I at the right place then?21:25
zoredachex9x: yes21:25
x9xok21:25
slimjimflim....tried reinstalling flash and it happens on konqueror too21:26
slimjimflimand my mixer21:26
slimjimflimxfce-mixer or something21:26
x9x...and the packages with the red dot ("beror" in swedish) is the deps?21:27
x9xis there a way to see that page in english btw?21:27
slimjimflimaltavista.com can translate, x9x21:27
zoredachex9x: it is in english (for me), I suspect you may need to set the language in your browser21:28
x9xoups.. I found a link to english at the bottom of the page :-}21:28
zoredachex9x: yes, the red dot indicates required packages21:30
x9xthe green ones, "recommends" is allso installed when I install xubuntu I guess?21:30
zoredacheit depends on how you install, but yes you usually get the reccomended packages as well21:31
x9xsomething that whould be very nice is a table that compares xubuntu with fluxbuntu and normal ubuntu21:31
x9xaha21:32
slimjimflimwhat's fluxbuntu?21:32
gaurdroa flavor of ubuntu that uses fluxbox as it's window manager.21:33
zoredacheI suspect that table would be really long, but it wouldn't be very hard to generate with a little scripting...21:33
x9xis is supposed to need less memory than xubuntu.21:33
slimjimflimya, that's what it looks like from the fluxbox wiki21:34
x9xzoredache : yeah I guess a ubuntu-xubuntu side-by-side page should be somewhat easy to make with scripts. but I don't know if fluxbuntu have these kind of info21:35
zoredachesure, it should be available just as easily21:35
x9xbtw, ehat do xubuntu do If I try do run it on a computer with too little memory? say only 100Mb... do it try anyway or protest?21:36
x9x*what21:36
zoredacheyou might have to use apt-cache to get get your lists, but all the information is easily available21:36
x9xok21:36
x9xoh.. now it is time for tea. see you later.21:36
zoredachesome services may not start, and you would probably get a huge ammount of disk thrashing from swap21:37
askerdoes anyone know where the X settings in failsafe are stored?21:44
askerI have looked in the Xorg.conf and all the hidden files. but I cant find it anywhere.21:46

slimjimflimALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave21:54
slimjimflimany ideas?21:54
gaurdrotry not running it as root21:54
slimjimflimguardro, it does the same for an unpriv. user21:57
slimjimflimi was just doing that b/c i only get the error as root21:57
slimjimflimi'm assuming it's the same error, just not being printed to std out21:57
gaurdromaybe, maybe not,  a lot of program complain when they're run from root.  Alsa may be one of these (I'm not sure).21:58
gaurdrohow did you install flash?21:58

j1Hi, everybody (particulary Stroganoff), I've something stupid but potentially useful to tell: The default shortcut key for the "popup menu" (Applications menu) in xfce is ctrl-esc. It didn't work for me, except in some rare occasions. I've been suffering from that for moths. Now I discovered the trick: the esc key has to be pressed in a very short flash on my laptop (toshiba A50), otherwise it repeats the esc, and hides the menu so 22:36
Stroganofflol22:37
PsynoKhi0besides /etc/init.d/networking restart, dhclient, and ifconfig, what toys do I have to get my roaming mode wired connection to work when I plug the cable after logging in Xubuntu?22:38
TheSheep!wifi22:38
ubotuWireless documentation can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs22:38
PsynoKhi0?22:38
TheSheepah, sorry, misread22:38
crimsunPsynoKhi0: networt-manager22:38
PsynoKhi0:)22:38
crimsunnetwork, of course22:39
PsynoKhi0crimsun: through the applet?22:39
crimsunPsynoKhi0: sure.22:39
PsynoKhi0tried manual configuration > dhcp... do the 3 fields below that need to be filled accordingly?22:39
Stroganoffyeah "slim" eats the double amount of ram as xdm does22:43
Stroganoffbut xdm is broken in hardy22:43
Stroganoffcrap22:44
crimsunPsynoKhi0: you shouldn't use manual configuration if you want "roaming" for wired.22:48
crimsunPsynoKhi0: (it's akin to setting the ifaces through /etc/network/interfaces, which disables network-manager's handling of those ifaces)22:48
PsynoKhi0crimsun: probably not... however roaming mode isn't very cooperative if I plug in the network cable once logged in xubuntu22:49
PsynoKhi0I get no IP address22:49
crimsunPsynoKhi0: hmm, that hasn't been my experience.  If you tail -F /var/log/daemon.log, do you see dhclient at work for that iface?22:50
TheSheepPsynoKhi0: check your dhcp server's logs22:51
PsynoKhi0brb22:54
cody-somervillemaxamillion, add -devel to your autojoin ;]23:21

theron1st time using the alternate installer, I'm trying to install on a system built around http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ex10000eg and the harddrive is a serial ATA notebook drive.  It's not detecting what HD I'm using, any guesses?23:23
theronI've no idea where to even start looking for that.23:23
maxamilliontheron: that's odd ... sata normally has no problems being detected23:24
oliver_g_hi again23:26
oliver_g_anyone seen Stroganoff around?23:26

theronmaxamillion:  so I'm stuck atm the regular install fails to start X in any fashion on this system, and the alternate installer fails to detect the HD.23:29
maxamillioninteresting23:30
PsynoKhi0back... ok now on the cuplrit laptop23:33
PsynoKhi0without cable plugged in during boot: nothing in tail -F /var/log/daemon.log about the dhclient23:34
PsynoKhi0with cable plugged in: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 yadayada23:35
PsynoKhi0TheSheep: what kind of stuff should I look for in the dhcp logs? (dhcp.leases, right?)23:41
TheSheepPsynoKhi0: first check if the server get the request, then check if it sends a response23:43
TheSheepPsynoKhi0: then make sure the response is accepted23:43
TheSheepPsynoKhi0: you can make sure it's your computer by checking the MAC address23:43
