dennistergenii: i'm having problems with acpi preventing another installation onto a P4 machine02:39
dennistergenii: I was also thinking about you earlier today...need to sell some gold in those spare CPU's and shot mobos02:40
dennisterdo u remember that recycler who'd buy them?02:40
geniidennister: So you're finding acpi=off or noacpi neccesary for it to boot kernel properly, or so?02:40
RoeyVisciousPotato:  ahhhhh! :)02:40
Roeyhey Robby :)02:40
dennistergenii: it boots, but then hangs/freezes...won't finish (or refuses to install the kernel)02:41
VisciousPotatoPlease refer to #support02:41
geniidennister: Well, the recycler we were going to before was paying $5 old hds, cases and mb I don't know02:41
dennisteri just remember ken saying his eyes lit up cause of the precious metals, and those metals are in the cpu's and mobos...not so much the hdd02:42
geniidennister: Tried the alternate cd?02:42
dennistergenii: that's what I've been focusing on all day...most of the probs i complain of are with the alternate cd02:43
geniidennister: I'll get the info where and who from Ken re: recycling, prices etc (he always dealt with them since driving, etc)02:43
juanihi02:43
juanii installed hardy beta02:44
juaniand i konsole doesn't have autocompletion02:44
dennisterfirst, at bootup, get the NHI watchdog error message...it continues to boot...goes along fine until *after the partitioning stage and I've done tons of work...freezes at 33% of formatting root's partition with ext302:44
geniidennister: On the alternate cd if it does something like hang, you can find usually some info on why by looking at console 4 (alt-f4) where stdout is going, error msgs etc etc02:44
juanii installed bash-completion02:44
juanibut this doesn't solve the problem02:44
dennisterk...alt-f4...will remember that02:45
geniidennister: Maybe try ext2 since you can convert it after easily02:45
dennisteri just want to get rid of acpi...not have it installed at all...i know how to disable it for the livecd session, but how to make sure it doesn't get installed during the system installation?02:46
Dr_willisHmm.. apci is a kernel featre i thought. you disable it with the various boot options.02:47
Dr_willisYou could set the defaults in the menu.lst file.02:47
dennisteri'd really like to disable it in the bios, but...i should figure out how to make sure it doesn't get installed in my future kubuntu installs02:47
dennisterDr_willis: that's fine once you have it installed and a /boot section, but i'm not there yet...still trying to install and acpi is buggering me up...just won't let it happen02:48
geniidennister: on alternate I forget. On regular F6 then edit end of kernel line to add whatever options. After install before reboot you can just mount the / (or /boot if you have separate for that) under /mnt and then edit the /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst there to add whatever boot options the new kernel should use.02:48
GS3Userhi02:49
geniidennister: Disable any acpi in bios and kernel options should not be needed02:49
GS3Useri was recently juggling around with opendns, and now i cannot samba between my boxes, even though both of them can connect to the 'net still. Any ideas?02:50
dennistergenii: yes, on regular live i use the same method...F6...noapic...but i need to know how to do this with alternatecd, and make sure it doesn't get installed in the hdd installation02:50
dennisterdisabling acpi in bios is what i was intending to do...but i want to save bios first with aflaash utility...but kfloppy is buggering me up without the ability to use *any* of my floppy disks...always give me errors...came into the channel to do02:52
free1how can I save the contents of the crash dump file?02:52
dennistersome troubleshooting of the floppy functions in this working pc...i actually trust *gulp* winblows's results re floppies better than kubuntu's at this point02:53
dennister.I was getting suspicious about kfloppy and other floppy-related feedback from konsole, I was *always* being told there were formating erros when using kfloppy, and *always* being told of input/output errors when I tried the "dd if...of" comand in terminal02:54
dennisterso I rebooted into my winblows drive did a comaprison: yes, many of the diskettes were unformatable, so i threw them out, but some were fine02:54
terettes15whats a program that can convert music files into mp3's02:55
dennister now, those same "fine", newly formatted disks are still giving me the same kfloppy and konsole errors02:55
corporealterettes15: mencoder, lame, etc.02:55
dennistergenii: Dr_willis: do u both see the depth of my problems now? lol02:56
terettes15thank you02:56
geniidennister: After googling around, F6 in alternate seems same method to manually insert kernel options02:56
dennisterand those inserted options will hold true not only for the temporary-wtih-cd installation, but also after the reboot?02:57
dennisterthos inserted options will be carried forward into the installed kernel?02:58
dennister(if the kernel actually installs this time)02:58
geniidennister: No, for that you need to use the method I just earlier described, of editing the to-be /boot/grub/menu.lst and manually inserting it before rebooting when install completes.02:59
geniidennister: The F6 is to insert the option into the kernel the installer uses for it's own03:00
juliehow do I find out howmany hdds there are and how do I mount them form the command line03:00
geniijulie: sudo disk -l                should list them all, mounted or otherwise. For the manpage of how to use the mount command from console,: man mount03:01

damien_Whenever I restart my computer, it says GRUB Loading, then it says GRUB Error 1703:57
damien_And I reinstall kubuntu03:57
Jucatojulie: to make it very short: The stuff you want to be installed by default (probably except for Java) have legal and/or moral/ethical  grounds not to be shipped by default. Ubuntu doesn't aim to be just another Linux distro that unconscientiously ships these. They have a commitment to adhere and promote Free Software as well as Open Standards and Formats03:57

im-a-n00bhey all, does kde4 work with compiz?05:44
stdinim-a-n00b: you mean "does compiz work with kde4", and compiz will work with anything, it's a just a window manager05:45
stdinit still has bugs though, so don't expect perfection05:45
im-a-n00bstdin: ok.. phew.. fears are laid to rest.. when hardy comes out im going to try kde4. i was hoping compiz would work cause i find some of its features cool and effective (and like showing off at work amongst the winxp boxes)05:46
stdinim-a-n00b: you know kde4's default window manager (kwin) has some cool effects of its own now too05:47
Jucatoand imho more useful effects too :)05:48
im-a-n00bstdin: ive read about that.. they seem ok.. but from most things ive read.. im not sure they stak up against compiz... although i will be trying them too :)05:48
stdincompiz has more effects, but I find what kwin provides is plenty for me05:49
Jucatocompiz has more effects but less stability/scalability and less KDE integration. think of Compiz as being built purely with special effects in mind05:49
JucatoKWin, on the other hand, was built to be a proper and powerful window manager first, and the effects were just added on top of it later05:50
im-a-n00blol.. i just like the effect at work.. when they come up and say "thats vista??!!!" and i get to say "no, its linux, vista never looked this good05:51
Jucato(not dissing Compiz though... it paved a lot in the way of compositing effects in *nix)05:51
Jucatowell vista doesn't have the cube either (because they don't have virtual desktops...)05:51
=== andrew__ is now known as Trel
Jucatothe thing is, I don't think you can use Compiz without the effects. I mean, if you only had compiz and didn't have the hardware for it, it won't work. KWin adjusts to the resources available05:52

Jucatoright :)05:53
KestrelI just installed Kubuntu, and the System settings is different from what I'm used to in KDE05:53
im-a-n00bJucato: i did install the kde4 alpha on a 700 mhz 128mb ram machine05:53
KestrelHow to I make it so I double click on icons rather than single click05:53
Jucatokwin has this nice (or annoying, take your pic) effect that switches windows with Alt+Tab like CoverFlow in iTunes/Mac OS X05:54
JucatoKestrel: System Settings -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Mouse05:54
im-a-n00bKestrel: are you thining of the kcontrol settings manager05:54
KestrelJucato: thanks05:54
Kestrelim-a-n00b: if that's what's normal used, then yes05:54
JucatoKestrel: just FYI, you can still use kcontrol in KDE 3. but might as well get used to System Settings, because KDE 4 doesn't have kcontrol anymore, only system settings (taken from Kubuntu)05:54
Jucato(but very much improved)05:55
KestrelI wasn't attached, but I just didn't know where it was.05:55
KestrelI might as well ask this now, how do I enable the super key in this one05:55
KestrelI barely remember how to do that in kcontrol05:56
Jucatowhat do you mean? Use the Win/Meta key to launch the K Menu?05:57
Kestrelwell that, but I remember when I installed compiz-fusion on Mandriva, I couldn't use the Metakey for anything until I changed something.05:58
KestrelIt might not be the case, but I haven't even attempted compiz fusion yet05:58
Jucatonah. Mandriva does that by default. it sets Win key *only* to launch the K Menu. iirc that prevents the Win key from being used in other combinations05:59
Jucatoit's only Mandriva that does that afaik. here, you can use the Meta key in combinations05:59
stdinit'd be an X.Org setting if anything05:59
Jucatoof course.. any key must be an x.org setting :P06:00
KestrelI had the same problem in Fedora, so it's not only mandriva, but I'll hopefully not have the problem with this one :)06:00
JucatoKestrel: you can always check if your Win key is read by KDE as such by trying to change/make some shortcuts in System Settings -> Keyboard &  Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts06:00
KestrelIt appears to work there then.06:01
KestrelWell I'd like to say I'll be back, but that problably is admitting a problem before it happens. :p06:01
* Jucato can't recall Fedora KDE doing something like that in F706:01
KestrelOdd question before I go, do you know if mIRC and Nonamescript work under Wine?06:01

merkekehow do u install anything on this07:07
Jucatomerkeke: K Menu -> Add/Remove Programs07:07
trevor__I use pidgin, but that's cause it's multi-protocol, and it works with GoogleTalk07:07
needhelpKetrel: erm not that i have experienced.. the thing with command line apt-get is that you know what is happening when there is some errors07:07
JucatoKopete does as well07:07
needhelpKetrel: try it, then you can paste to us the problem07:08
trevor__If you're using Kubuntu, I recomend Kopete, because it integrates into the desktop better...07:08
JoshOvkiKetrel: i have never seen heard of that, and havnt seen it because i dont use nvidea graphics chips07:08
Ketrelmerkeke, one thing about Linux that's slightly confusing for Windows people. Add + Remove programs is actually used to ADD in Linux.07:08
needhelpfresh installation of kubuntu's kopete may have a bug...:P07:08
KetrelUnlike windows where it's almost only used to remove.07:08
JoshOvkikrazywolf: there isnt much of a difference, just the way extra programs are installed around it i belive07:08
krazywolfso i should just go kubuntu?07:09
merkekeyeah i got kubuntu ... i was going to choose the new gOS to see how that is07:09
dwidmannKetrel: hahaha, too true07:09
needhelpkubuntu = kde + ubuntu .. which is same as kunbutu kde? haha07:09
JoshOvkikrazywolf: yeh, why not ;)07:09
merkekei installed the pidgin package but its not loading...is their anything else i need to do?07:10
needhelpanyone know how to fix the trackpad for macbook under kubuntu? i can't left click..had been stuck for weeks even after googling07:10
krazywolfhow do drivers work under kubuntu?07:11
krazywolfor how about games?07:12
krazywolfdo games not work on linux?07:12
jussio1!games07:12
ubotuInformation about games on Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Games and http://www.icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php07:12
JoshOvkikrazywolf: some games do, some games dont is the usual thing07:12
jussio1krazywolf: drivers for what?07:12
needhelpkrazywolf: i tried playing warcraft3 frozen throne in kubuntu, using wine .. well it works07:12
JoshOvkijussio1: i screwed up my install :)07:12
needhelpbut quite complicated to set up07:12
dwidmannkrazywolf: remember, Kubuntu is not windows :)07:12
needhelp!wine07:13
ubotuWINE is a compatibility layer for running Windows programs on GNU/Linux. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine for more information, and see !AppDB for application compatibility.07:13
krazywolfjussi01, network card, nvidia drivers, motherboard drivers etc07:13
jussio1krazywolf: most are built in, shouldnt need any, except the nvidia ones07:13
needhelpmerkeke: try K button-->Internet--> Pidgin ?07:13
jussio1!nvidia | krazywolf07:13
ubotukrazywolf: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto07:13
KetrelDoes matrox even still make consumer cards?07:14
krazywolfso whats teh big deal about linux if you gotyta do all this extra stuff to do one thing?07:14
dwidmannkrazywolf: unless you're running *bleeding* edge hardware in which case you might have issues, maybe.07:14
needhelpits free07:14
Ketrelkrazywolf the problem isn't linux, it's that the makers of the devices don't support it like they do windows07:14
merkekeneedhelp: i do that it wants to load (hour glass) then it just closes07:14
merkekeis their something i have to do in root now?07:15
needhelp*shrug*.., let me try to install..haven't use it before07:15
merkekelol07:15
merkekeim so confused07:15
dwidmannkrazywolf: if you had compatible hardware you would have to do very little if anything at all to make things work, which is always quite nice.07:15
merkekeusing windows since 95, going to linux...not a easy transition07:15
needhelpmerkeke: how did u install pidgin?07:15
dwidmannmerkeke: try running it from konsole07:16
krazywolfmerkeke, me too07:16
krazywolfI'm trying to go linux to see what the hype is about07:16
krazywolfbut it sounds like too much work07:16
krazywolfdon't know waht the great advatnages are?07:16
krazywolfif you have to know all these fancy commands and tricks and tweaks and stuff to just go about normal use07:16
Ketrelkrazywolf, once you get it working, it's almost 0% chance of breaking07:16
jussio1krazywolf: no virus's, secure, easy install stuff from the repositories07:16
dwidmannkrazywolf: flexible, powerful, low maintenance, fast07:17
needhelpkrazywolf: erm..lesser (almost 0) viruses..free softwares..almost fulfil every needs..flexible07:17
dwidmann....very customizable07:17
JoshOvkikrazywolf: there is plenty of support for it07:17
krazywolfsounds complicated07:18
leo_rockwkrazywolf: you don't __have__ to know all the crazy commands. but you'll find out in due time that the console is the greatest tool out there07:18
needhelpmy company is using kubuntu for their work..i'm having a good time maintaining the OS..there is almost no need to go down to their station as there are no problems at all07:18
krazywolfMaybe i should leave thid wubi thing for a while07:18
krazywolfuntil i get the hang of it07:18
krazywolfand than do a full linux system07:18
krazywolfinstead of dual boot07:18
jussio1krazywolf: most things you can do through the gui. remember, Linux is _different_ but not necissarily _harder_07:18
jussio1!enter | krazywolf07:19
ubotukrazywolf: Please try to keep your questions/responses on one line - don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation!07:19
Ketreloh damn, I should sent the output to a file07:20

krazywolfAlright07:22
krazywolfso if that command comes up again07:22
krazywolfSorry, i forgot botu the one line thing, anyways so if that command comes up again, what is teh command i should do?07:23
needhelpkrazywolf: you mean after u run wubi, you end up in a busybox? i think it shouldn't be the case although i never used wubi before...07:23
krazywolfneedhelp, that was my case though, i got that busybox command prompt thing07:24
needhelpkrazywolf: but you did see a boot loader to choose between ubuntu and windows right?07:24
krazywolfyes07:24
krazywolfand i selected ubuntu07:24
krazywolfand the little logo thing07:25
KetrelI'd assume if you reboot, you'll be given the choice again07:25
needhelpkrazywolf: i think you should reinstall the wubi again? you shouldn't end up on busybox..hmm07:25
krazywolfdamn it, im sorry i keep pressing enter, but ya it gives me the choice, than i go ubuntu and i get the logo with the little bar going left to right and than it goes black with a cursor that just flashses for a little and than i get that busybox07:25
krazywolfWas it because i installed kubuntu-kde?07:26

needhelpi read from wubiguide it says wubi does not support software raid 0 (fakeraid)..you have to install into a partition outside of the raid array..pure hardware raid should be ok07:28
krazywolfI don't have raid?07:29
leo_rockwkrazywolf: did you try a livecd before?07:29
krazywolfNo, only wubi07:29

leo_rockweagles0513875: preferences > config kate > editor > open/save07:31
needhelpkrazywolf: actually you don't have to do a full switch from windows to kubuntu.. just give a 10gb partition for kubuntu and you still can boot into windows07:31
leo_rockweagles0513875: my kde is in spanish, so it might not be verbatim07:31

leo_rockwKrazyWolf: for now just change it to nosplash08:28
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: that will hopefully work08:28
KrazyWolfumm08:28
KrazyWolfwhen i press f6, I get boot options and it wants a command lol08:29
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: nosplash08:29

KrazyWolfso delete the entire thing and enter nosplash?08:29
KrazyWolfk08:29
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: wait, what does it say?08:29
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: it probably says "splash" somewhere, just change it to nosplash, or just add nosplash08:30
KrazyWolffile=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --08:30
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: change splash to nosplash08:31

leo_rockwjust wondering... broadcoms used to be a pain in the neck, not so much anymore08:35
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: startx08:35
KrazyWolfIt's brand new eagles0513875, custom built it like 3 months ago08:35
dwidmannKrazyWolf: those aren't any fun at all08:35
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: the newer the comp the harder to get hardware compatibility08:35
KrazyWolfi get this /bin/sh: startx: not found08:35
dwidmannleo_rockw: if it says initramfs it's probably busybox08:35
eagles0513875KrazyWolf: what leo_rockw said08:35
leo_rockwdwidmann: never heard of that08:36
KrazyWolfYa I got a Core 2 Duo E6750, 8800 GTS G92 512MB graphics card08:36
eagles0513875KrazyWolf: i got my other laptop back in december and i cant get kubuntu gutsy on it i have a nasty bug and hardy locks up after install08:36
dwidmannleo_rockw: it's what it drops to if it fails to do important pre-boot things08:36
KrazyWolfeverythings custom, just about08:36
leo_rockwdwidmann: so that's def not good then...08:36
KrazyWolfYa it is busybox08:36
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: try the "dmesg" command08:36
leo_rockwwonder if that will work...08:37
KrazyWolfnot found, "/bin/sh: dmesg: not found"08:37
leo_rockwit's the first time i hear something like that...08:37
dwidmannKrazyWolf: not worth trying to run anything like startx, you don't even have your main filesystem mounted, probably.08:37
KrazyWolfim confused :(08:38
dwidmannKrazyWolf: short story, your system failed to boot.08:38
dwidmannproperly anyhow08:38
KrazyWolfso i guess im stuck iwht windows lol08:38
dwidmannKrazyWolf: if the ubuntu live cd worked flawlessly there is hope08:39
KetrelQuick question, how do you call up the CLI version of emacs?08:39
Ketrelwhen I do emacs filename, I get a gui version08:40
dwidmannIIRC you were using wubi, which is fairly new - maybe a normal install would have better luck08:40
leo_rockwKetrel: emacs... and then use tab08:40
KrazyWolfI keep getting weird errors :(08:40
leo_rockwKetrel: find out if you have any other app with that name08:40
KrazyWolfdwidmann, I uninstalled wubi08:40
leo_rockwdwidmann: no, he was using wubi and we told him to try the livecd08:40
Ketrelemacs and emacs2208:40
KrazyWolfBut when I boot, it gives me the option to start vista or ubuntu08:40
Ketreland emacsclient08:40
dwidmannKrazyWolf: so, does the live cd boot or no?08:41
KrazyWolfyea it boots08:41
KrazyWolfand gives me the option on what to do08:41
KrazyWolfand i select start and install08:41
dwidmannKrazyWolf: and after you select "start or install", does it boot?08:41
leo_rockwdwidmann: he gets fatal failure no screen founds. he has an nvidia 8800gts08:41
KrazyWolfno dude, it doesn't go to an graphical thing, it stays in command mode and gives me errors08:41
leo_rockwdwidmann: i found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/14090808:42
dwidmannleo_rockw: oh, fuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn08:42
leo_rockwdwidmann: so i asked him to change splash to nosplash. and that's when you came to witness the busybox08:42
dwidmannleo_rockw: he needs to install with the alternate cd, then install the nvidia drivers08:42
leo_rockwdwidmann: it's his very first time on gnu/linux08:42
leo_rockwdwidmann: he wanted to see what he was getting into first08:42
dwidmannleo_rockw: or wait, maybe booting with the recovery option would work better08:42
dwidmannleo_rockw: it's requisite - booting to a gui before the nvidia drivers are installed with that card is impossible.08:43
dwidmannleo_rockw: he might have luck with the "recovery" option08:43
KrazyWolfmaybe it'll work on this laptop?08:43
KrazyWolfThis laptop is over 5 years old08:43
KetrelI found the answer to emacs problem08:44
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: you'll probably have more luck08:44
KetrelI have to use emacs -nw08:44
leo_rockwKetrel: :-)08:44
dwidmannKrazyWolf: should be able to get it to work, but it'll take a bit of instruction following, I just installed on a system with an nvidia 8600gt last week08:44
KrazyWolfanyone know how to remove the option of the windows boot manager? for some reason it is still showing me ubuntu when i did the wubi thing08:44
KrazyWolfbrb im going to get on IRC on my desktop and try the livecd on this laptop08:45
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: just to let you know, gnu/linux is not usually this hard...08:45
dwidmannleo_rockw: the newer your hardware is the harder it can get08:45
leo_rockw<leo_rockw> KrazyWolf: the newer the comp the harder to get hardware compatibility08:46
leo_rockw;-)08:46

orehonHello, Exist a patch to make dolphin order the files by type?08:47
orehonI am using kubuntu 7.1008:48
dwidmannughh, this download is making my irc disconnect a lot :(08:48
leo_rockworehon: it's the first time i notice d3lphin does not order by type... i usually use konqueror08:50
orehonleo_rockw: is.. but dolphin is very good and light08:50
leo_rockworehon: that's pretty annoying! haha08:50
JucatoI don't have d3lphin right now, but isn't there an option in the View menu?08:50
leo_rockwJucato: no, that's the thing08:50
orehonyes it is08:50
orehonNo Jucato.08:50
orehonI am trying to find it at google08:51
leo_rockwJucato: by name, by date, by size,08:51
orehonbut I cant08:51
Jucatoah ok. :)08:51
Jucato(yeah D3lphin sucks... Dolphin rocks!)08:51
dwidmannorehon: right, Dolphin is very good, I refuse to say the same thing for D3lphin.08:51
orehonI am using Dolphin.08:51
Jucatono, you are using D3lphin08:51
orehonand dolphin doesnt has08:51
stunatraWhichever Dolphin that comes with Kubuntu, sucks.08:51
JucatoDolphin is KDE 4 only08:52
dwidmannstunatra: that would be D3lphin08:52
leo_rockwdolphin is kde4, d3lphin is kde308:52
orehondolphin 0.9.208:52
orehonoh... ok08:52
leo_rockwthat's d3lphin.08:52
orehonI dont like kde 408:52
JucatoDolphin has sort by name, date, type, size, permissions, owner, group, ascending/descending :)08:52
stunatraI guess I'm too used to Konqueror.08:53
orehonI am only using kde cuz the bluetooth framework is better than gnome08:53
dwidmannorehon: you can use kde4 apps in kde3 :)08:53
orehonOh really... it is new too me.08:53
emilsedghorehon: you dont like KDE 4.0, not whole KDE408:54
orehonCan I  install dolphin here?08:54
dwidmannorehon: you have to type out the whole command to run them though, or create  a workaround for doing so --- /usr/lib/kde4/bin/08:54
ryancleminsonDoes anyone know when the new kubuntu is being released08:54
dwidmannorehon: sudo apt-get install dolphin-kde408:55

KrazyWolf-ubuntuHey guys, I got ubuntu livecd to work on my laptop09:00
dwidmannorehon: and that's where opera comes in :P09:00
orehonI need to use firebug every minute.09:00
orehon:P09:00
emilsedgh(thats Fx not FF)09:00
dwidmannhmm, hour and a half til my hardy disk is downloaded09:01
orehondwidmann: I am going to send an email to d3lphin developers to ask about the file type09:01
DarkriftXim getting Unable to save bookmarks in /home/darkrift/.kde/share/apps/d3lphin/bookmarks.xml. Reported error was: Permission denied. This error message will only be shown once. The cause of the error needs to be fixed as quickly as possible, which is most likely a full hard drive09:01
KrazyWolf-ubuntudwidmann: , I guess it is my graphics card, because livecd ran without a problem on my laptop09:01
DarkriftXand i created those folders/that file and still getting that error every time i close dolphin09:01
DarkriftXanyone know what the problem is?09:01
dwidmannKrazyWolf-ubuntu: I said that a while ago, you need to use the alternate disk.09:02
KrazyWolf-ubuntudwidmann: , so how would i get ubuntu to work on my desktop?09:03
DarkriftXwhats your question KrazyWolf-ubuntu, i dont see it09:04
dwidmannKrazyWolf-ubuntu: with the aforementioned alternate installation cd.09:05
KrazyWolf-ubuntudwidmann: , so I would have to install it on the hard drive adn than get the drivers for the video?09:05
KrazyWolf-ubuntubut if I do that, it stops at the no screen fatal error thing, so how am i gonna get the driver on it if it won't even complete setup?09:05
dwidmannKrazyWolf-ubuntu: basically, you install with the ******alternate******** (NOT LIVE) cd (to your hard drive), then boot into recovery mode, install the drivers, and reboot and it should be fine09:06
DarkriftXdo the text install09:06
DarkriftXor yeah, what he said09:07
DarkriftXthats easier09:07
KrazyWolf-ubuntualright, thanks for the help everyone but its time for me to go to sleep, lol its 4 am here09:07
KrazyWolf-ubuntuI'll be around now since I'm doing the ubuntu thing, hopefully i'll grow to favoring it over windows09:07
DarkriftXshouldnt be hard09:07
DarkriftXuse it for a few hours and that will happen09:07
dwidmannbrb, restarting X to turn on my shmconfig09:09
KetrelI have 2 questions. I have a file in my autostart folder that runs a command. It runs fine, but then it opens in Kate, how can I make it just execute but not open in kate? Also, is there any way to search apt-get using command line (to just see if somethign exists)?09:11
ActionParsnipKetrel: whats the file do / point to?09:12
Ketrelthe file just has the following "compiz --replace &"09:13
ActionParsnipKetrel: also try sudo apt-cache  search <package name>09:13
ActionParsnipKetrel: does it have the standard #!/bin/bash at the start?09:15
ActionParsnipKetrel: did you chmod +x <script name> to make it executable?09:15
ActionParsnipKetrel: if you try those you may have more luck. reboot and tell us if its ok when you come back round09:18
Ketrelit is executable09:20
janneHello! Is there some who could help me with mythtv?09:20
Ketrelbut I didn't add the bash line09:20
ActionParsnipKetrel: yeah you need that bit or its just a text file09:21
Ketrelah09:22
Ketrelone other question, is there any way to make it connect to wireless automatically09:22
Ketrelthe program starts but it won't connect to the access point unless I manually do it09:22
KetrelI keep forgetting to manually do it :]09:23
ActionParsnipKetrel: you need to make it autoconnect and enabled so standrd users can connect (i think)09:24
Ketrelno clue how to do that09:24
Ketrelthat's what I want to do though09:24
ActionParsnipKetrel: in your /etc/network/interface file do you see the line  auto wlan0 (or whatever your wifi is)09:25

Ketrelauto eth109:28

ActionParsnipfine09:28
Ketrelkk, I gotta reboot for something, will see if that worked09:29
ActionParsnipKetrel: np, you can always remove the line if its no good ;)09:29
Ketrelit didn't crash, but it's still not connecting to my access point without me manually doing it09:34
ActionParsnipwhat do you do to bring it up?09:34
Ketrelit's the knetworkmanager09:35
Ketrelit was sitting in kicker when I installed09:35
ActionParsnipKetrel: do you use ndiswrapper for wireless?09:37
ActionParsnipKetrel: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-193930.html09:38

Jucatofivetwentysix: not unless you have 64-bit, then you'll need to use a 64-bit system11:39

fivetwentysixjucato how did mandriva use 4gb of my ram on the i686 architecture11:40
KetrelI have one final problem with kubuntu. It's shutdown sound sounds just like the Windows XP error sound. I think I have whiplash :\11:41
Jucatooh wait... 4GB is the 32-bit limit.. hm..11:41
eagles0513875fivetwentysix: y would u wanna use 4gb of ram unless ur trying to run it as a complete ram disk which then if u have a poweroutage ur pretty much screwed11:41
godkaschange the shutdown sound11:41
fivetwentysixeagles0513875: Because my system has 4gb of ram?11:42

fivetwentysixeagles0513875 Do you have a proper answer to my question?11:43
eagles0513875fivetwentysix: im just not understanding why u wanna use all of ur ram though11:43

fivetwentysixI have 4gb of ram11:44
eagles0513875fivetwentysix: u on a desktop or laptop11:44

godkasso why wont my kubuntu disc work :/ im tired of gnome its oogl11:44

eagles0513875fivetwentysix: maybe there is a setting which might have gotten turned off if u wanna use more then 2gb of ram11:45

godkasuhuh11:45
fivetwentysixeagles051375 what would that be?11:45
SlimeyPeteI suspect you'd need to recompile your kernel to get at it, and a single process can only use up to 2GB of RAM11:45

fivetwentysixSlimeyPete so should i use x86_64?11:45

KubuntuJackI was looking at models from ASUS with a passive heatsink.  there is also a cooler from arctic cooling the accelero S1 whcih should even work on a 8800GT12:25
sl4mm3rif you are going to get an 8800gt vs 8800gtx ... you might want to look at the new 9800's too12:26
sl4mm3rthey're 256 bit as well.. and i think might be cheaper12:26
KubuntuJackThe res I don't know yet.  I'm gonna get a new monitor in a couple of months.  might go for 2 x 19-20" or may even a 24"..12:26
sl4mm3rits hard to find hidden gems right now..  we get what we pay for right now12:27
sl4mm3ri can run ultra mode at 1280x1024 in nexuiz .. but in 1920x1440 it stutters down to 20 fps .. having a 256 bit bus i think would help out12:27
sl4mm3rquite a bit12:27
sl4mm3rlook for a 9600 with passive cooling12:28
sl4mm3rmind you .. the 8600 .... does run fairly cool12:29
sl4mm3rand apparently is only a volt mod away from being a gtx12:29
sl4mm3rif you are into that sorta thing12:29
sl4mm3rand the 8600gt does run kind of cool.. so you probably could put a heatsink on it12:29
sl4mm3ri actually have one for mine but i haven't bothered to install it since my cpu fan is so loud too12:29
KubuntuJackYes and no.  I like to do shit like that, but on the otherhand it voids warranty...12:29
sl4mm3rbut the 8600gt is leaving me wanting a bit more for higher res stuff12:30
sl4mm3ri o/c with coolbits too12:30

_abbenormalis there a way to compile a kernel in kubuntu and not have to make initrd image to boot the system i would like to use vanilla kernels and compile the debian way15:24

MarcC-backroomhow can I get KDE to stop restoring compiz to run when it restores the last session?15:24
Ayabarastdin, did you mean that the MM keys not working is a known kde4 issue, or that it's something I should bug ppl in #kde (like you ;) with?15:25
SlimeyPeteMarcC-backroom: kill compiz, then log out.15:25
_abbenormalok then why cannt i use a kernel ive compiled under debian in kubuntu15:25
stdinMarcC-backroom: system settings > advanced > session manager15:25
MarcC-backroomSlimeyPete, doesn't work15:25
stdinAyabara: I think it's known, I've never been able to use them in KDE4 but I can in KDE3 and KDE3 apps15:26

MarcC-backroomstdin, sorry, I can't get there, is there a cmd line way?15:28

MarcC-backroomstdin, no windeco15:28
MarcC-backroomI try to run kwin --replace from the console and it logs me out :-/15:29

_abbenormalok im tring to use a multiproto driver for testing new dvb cards15:33
kblinhi folks15:34
_abbenormal the way i know how to work it is build it outside of the kernel15:34
_abbenormalthen install it to the modules folder related to the kernel15:34
stdinright15:35
MarcC-backroomstdin, thanks, that worked...how do I manually save my session, btw?15:35
_abbenormalso whne i make a kernel for debian and install it it makes a sub folder for modules under the name of the kernel15:35
kblinI need to upgrade a gutsy box to hardy (to get some software that doesn't really work in gutsy yet), but over a rather slow link, what'd be the best way to do this?15:35
_abbenormali then install the prototype drivers to it15:36
kblinI'm happy to run it doing an aptitude dist-upgrade over night if it doesn't require user interaction15:36
stdinMarcC-backroom: hmm, not sure actually. I've never needed to manually save my session15:36
veloxidhey I have a problem with my speedstepping, i have a 2ghz centrino_m dothan but the max_freq is 600Mhz15:37
_abbenormalwhen i make a normal kernel under my debain box i dont have to use intrd in the command line15:37
MarcC-backroomstdin, I ask because I changed system settings to load a manually saved session at startup15:37
stdin_abbenormal: the initrd has it's own command in grub, septate from the kernel line15:37
_abbenormalyes i understand that15:38
flipstarhi, i want to create a very simple website..any good, easy tools for that ?15:38

flipstarveloxid: tryed the gutsy live cd ?15:41
stdinflipstar: quanta?15:41
flipstari'll check this, thanks15:42
_abbenormalit go into kernel panic and gives a vfs error not found at hd0,015:42
veloxidflipstar: yeah tried it, but it run on 600mhz too,15:42
stdinyeah, that means it wants a initrd image15:42
stdinor the one given is bad15:42
veloxidbut found out, that the kernel-modul   p4-clockmod"15:43
veloxiddid not run,15:43
_abbenormalok so then kubuntu has to use initrd to boot the drive15:43
dwidmannkind of an offtopic question, but something I need to ask -- My CPU temp is looking pretty crazy right away on a cold boot, it's reading around 55-60 whereas other things are reading anywhere from 22-32. I've heard sometimes it misreports by like double/half/etc, is this likely to be the case or do I have a seriously bad CPU temp problem?15:43
flipstardwidmann: open the case and check out :)15:43
stdin_abbenormal: it's a kernel compile-time option, should have noting to do with the distro15:43
SlimeyPetedwidmann: if I were you I'd assume the latter, just in case. Generally the inbuilt thermometers are pretty good.15:44
_abbenormaljust seams strange to have to build extra items when in the mian os its not needed15:44
stdincan't you just compile the module against the current kernel?15:44
SlimeyPetethough 50-60 idle temp isn't unheard-of for some processors15:44
SlimeyPeteespecially if you have a small case and stock cooling15:44
veloxidso I started it, now i find the folder cpu_freq, but the problem is that the cpuinfo_max_freq is on 600Mhz, and is not changable15:44
_abbenormalnope wont load no place to install the drivers that it finds15:45
dwidmannSlimeyPete: flipstar: well, I've checked everything I could think of, twice. I just can't believe that it would be at 60C on a COLD boot, where the ambient temperature in my room is about .... 60F or so.15:45
_abbenormaland if i compile them into the kernel then everytime i try a new driver or change what the driver does i have to then compile a kernel15:45
MarcC-backroomstdin, thanks, got the answer in #kde - if you change to manual you get a new option on your KMenu to save session15:46
_abbenormalwhere im use to stoping the driver then compiling just the driver and not having to make a new kernel each time15:46
stdinMarcC-backroom: so I saw ;)15:46

_abbenormalthanks stdin ill figure it out15:48
MarcC-backroomthanks stdin15:48
veloxidperhaps a good idea15:48
dwidmannSlimeyPete: flipstar: just seems a little crazy to me ..... because I once watched my temps when I used a hsf that I had forgotten to plug in and it was still ambient temperature on boot and took about 15 minutes before it hit 50-60.....15:48
flipstardwidmann: it might be the sensor is detected incorrect..here i have the same..70°C instead of 50°C15:49
MarcC-backroomstdin, do you know if this will cause any sort of long delay when I startup and it can't find the shares? (if I'm on another network)15:50
dwidmannflipstar: hmm, I'm guessing either +30C or *2 .... I wonder if there's any good ways of checking15:50
stdinMarcC-backroom: probably, yes. and you have to make sure that the network is up before it tries to mount them...15:50
stdinMarcC-backroom: you could do some fancy stuff in /etc/rc.local (rc.local is always the last startup tast)15:51
MarcC-backroomk, thanks stdin, doing it via the terminal is pretty fast, so maybe I won't bother15:51

KrazyWolfstdin,  your the only one that is complaning about it when it was a conversation between me and flipstar, its not that big of a deal, put a smile obn18:43
stdinto remove vista you have to format the partition with it on, after making sure to install grub to the mbr18:44
flipstarsola: thats very complicated..it would probably easier to try to resize the partition from a livecd..(after a backup of corse)18:44
KrazyWolfstdin, I don't need to remove vista, I need to remove the boot option of loading kubuntu when my computer boots up18:44
stdinahh, that's would probably be in C:\boot.list (or similar)18:45
stdintry ##windows for the exact name (it's a "hidden" file by default)18:45
solaflipstar, ok will maintain a separate copy of kubuntu then...thank you18:46
KrazyWolfstdin, you know when you dual boot, and you get that boot manager giving you a time to select which OS you want to choose before it timesout to default? well I still have kubuntu-kde and kubuntu for some reason listed even after i uninstalled kubuntu through my add/remove programs like the program wubi stated it does18:46
flipstarsola: or you could try to chroot into it from a cd and then uninstall ubuntu-desktop, install kubuntu-desktop18:46
KrazyWolfstdin, I did some research online, but I find it a big confusing, it tells me to do some weird bcdedit commands because vista doesn't have a boot.ini file anymore18:46
stdinit's C:\boot.(something) anyway18:46
flipstarsola: but thats probably risky18:46
stdinahh, well18:46
solaflipstar, but still present partition size(4 GB) is too small, i am planning kubuntu(kde3.5) then build kde4 on top of that18:47
KrazyWolfstdin, nad I thought running the vista recovery and doing a fixboot and fixmbr command would remove the kubuntu options but it isn't18:47
KrazyWolfstdin, the only reason I'm still on vista is because kubuntu refuses to work for me, i get the no screen fatal error message during its attempt to boot x18:48
flipstarsola: right..thats very small for kde3+418:48

stdinKrazyWolf: according to http://www.vistabootpro.org/ they changed it in vista to be some command prompt command, you can either try using the tool on that page to try the command yourself18:49
