jhutchins_ZeuZ_: Reset it to factory defaults.  There's usually a recessed button, either press it or hold it while powering up.01:58
jhutchins_ZeuZ_: Then consult the docs for the default password.01:58

leo_rockwthen xp with kubuntu when i finished downloading the iso :-P03:37

dwidmannKrazyWolf: i've got one better idea, in that konsole that is chrooted in, try this: ------ grub-install /dev/hda1 --root-directory=/boot --recheck05:48
KrazyWolfdwidmann: under device.map, it says (hd0) /dev/hda05:48
KrazyWolfdwidmann: how do i go back to that konsole, because im in the grub screen and not the one with the chrooted thing05:49
dwidmannKrazyWolf: type quit05:49
KrazyWolfoh okay i just typed quit05:49

KrazyWolfdwidmann: its giving me that syntax error again05:52
dwidmannKrazyWolf: put the "(hd0,0" in quotes (like that)05:52
dwidmannexcept don't forget the closing paren like I did ...05:53
leo_rockwtuanpham: you used crossover, you mean05:53
tuanphamyes05:53

leo_rockwhey Heavy_D05:57
leo_rockwtuanpham: i'm using hardy05:57
tuanphambut it's hard to use with newbe :)05:57
dwidmannleo_rockw: grub can be really hard to fix sometimes, sometimes reinstalling _is_ the appropriate solution.05:57
Heavy_Dok, I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.  I've got kubuntu 8.04 beta installed using KDE 4, I'm really liking it, but I can't seem to figure out how to add an application launcher to the desktop05:57

KrazyWolfis konsole the same as a terminal?06:07
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: it's not exactly the same, but close enough06:08
presto1im using ununtu hardy and want to try the kubuntu kde 4 setup all i need is the kde kubuntu metapackage right??06:08
presto1oops ubuntu06:08
KrazyWolfhow do i get a terminal?06:09
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: ctrl + alt + F106:09
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: ctrl + alt + F7 to come back06:09
NullNameKrazyWolf: Konsole and terminal are pretty much the same thing06:09
KrazyWolfi did a find /boot/grub/stage1 in the grub menu and it came back as (hd0,0)06:09
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: for what you're trying to do konsole and terminal are the same06:09
godkasleo_rockw: Any release date?06:10
leo_rockwgodkas: not that i know of06:10
presto1anyone know?06:11
Jucatopresto1: instructions are in the topic of #kubuntu-kde406:12
KrazyWolfleo_rockw, if my mbr or whatever is screwed, does that mean I can't even do a fresh install of kubuntu?06:12
presto1got it jucato06:12
dwidmannKrazyWolf: konsole is a terminal emulator06:12
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: i'm guessing the freshinstall of kubuntu will get rid of what's on your mbr now and install a new grub06:12
dwidmannKrazyWolf: fresh install usually fixes things with any luck06:12
KrazyWolfleo_rockw: thats what I asked like 2 hours ago and you said a fresh install wouldn't fix the mbr!06:13
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: you hadn't told me what the problem was yet06:13
leo_rockwKrazyWolf: a fresh install does not necesarily fix a mbr06:13
console_jockeyI have just bought a nokia 6068 phone and can connect to it with kbluetooth.  I've been able to send a file to it via OBEX Object Push client, but for some reason I can not download/copy any of the files already on the device to my pc.  In dolphin and konqueror there is a graphic lock icon in the file name and I get a read error when trying to open or move files.06:13
console_jockeyIs there something I'm missing?  I've tried to change permissions on the file in question, but I get a message that permissions aren't supported by OBEX.06:14
console_jockeyAnyone with any bluetooth experience what to give me a some ideas?06:14
dwidmannconsole_jockey: maybe if you were to do this as root it would work?06:14
KrazyWolfdwidmann: it worked! the link you gave me06:14
KrazyWolfhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows06:15
dwidmannKrazyWolf: sweet stuff06:15
KrazyWolfbut when I press ctrl alt f7 to come back, it keeps flickering!06:15
ixnayonthehombrei have a problem with adept if anyone would be able to help06:15
dwidmannKrazyWolf: I think I know what I was doing wrong06:15
console_jockeydwidmann: I thought of that so I ran kdesu konqueror thinking that maybe it would run konqueror as root.  Maybe I'm mistaken.  I don't generally log onto my machine as root, though I suppose I could give that a trie...06:15
KrazyWolfdwidmann: my screen is flickering nonstop06:15
dwidmannI forgot to have you bind /dev/ and /proc before chrooting in06:15
KrazyWolfdwidmann: I'm trying to do ctrl alt f7 to come back and its flickering like hell06:15
console_jockey!ask06:15
ubotuPlease don't ask to ask a question, ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely answer. :-)06:15
ixnayonthehombrekk06:16
ixnayonthehombresry06:16
leo_rockwconsole_jockey: kdesu konqueror runs konqueror with root privileges06:16
dwidmannKrazyWolf: not all cards support switching between vts and x sessions very well, ati cards are notoriously bad06:16
foiblesis there anyway to get e17 unto ubuntu?06:16
dwidmannleo_rockw: kdesudo > kdesu06:16
console_jockeyleo_rockw: that's what I thought.  However, that did not give me permission to read the files from my device.06:16
leo_rockwdwidmann: depends on the kubuntu version06:16
KrazyWolfdwidmann: what are the hotkeys to restart? ctrl alt del... and than what?06:17
leo_rockwdwidmann: kdesudo doesn't work in feisty afaik06:17
KrazyWolfbecause its flickering like hell06:17
Jucatoit would be better to use "kdesu" since it will work whether or not kdesudo is installed06:17
ixnayonthehombrei was trying to install ubuntu-restricted-extras in adept... then it said there was a break and there was something wrong and closed adept. Now when i try to install something i can request install but not apply changes06:17
Jucatoif kdesudo is installed, it is symlinked to kdesu06:17
* console_jockey running gutsy06:17
dwidmannleo_rockw: for gutsy and hardy it's kdesudo, for previous versions its kdesu, kdesu is still there in gutsy and hardy, - however, kdesu has never been very reliable and kdesudo is06:17
Jucatoixnayonthehombre: unless you're running Ubuntu, you probably want kubuntu-restricted-extras06:17
leo_rockwdwidmann: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2008-03-28 13:30 kdesu -> kdesudo06:18
ixnayonthehombrethere is no kubuntu one06:18
dwidmannleo_rockw: sweeeeeeeeeeeet06:18
ixnayonthehombrebut thats not the problem at the moment.... i cant apply changes to any of my requests to install06:18
leo_rockwdwidmann: so kdesu will always work no matter waht06:18
KrazyWolfalright im rebooting06:18
KrazyWolfto see if it loads06:18
KrazyWolfnope06:18
KrazyWolfDidn't work06:18
Jucatodidn't I just say that about kdesu? :P06:18

KrazyWolfdwidmann: I'm still getting error 1506:19
Jucatoixnayonthehombre: try installing from Konsole, using sudo apt-get install. It will give you error messages06:19
leo_rockw<Jucato> if kdesudo is installed, it is symlinked to kdesu ---> i read you Jucato, that's why i copy pasted the symlink06:19
Jucatodwidmann: what I typed :)06:19
Jucatodwidmann: technically, I'm not speaking. so there's nothing to listen to :P06:20
dwidmannKrazyWolf: you did both the grub-install and grub; root (hd0,0); setup?06:20
console_jockeywell, I've tried again with kdesu konqueror and verified that I did indeed have root access.  However, attempting to copy a file from the device ive me "Could not read xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" where xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx is device address.06:20
dwidmannJucato: there is some truth in that06:20

foiblesbut ubuntu is more solid and i just want to self configure e1706:23
Daisuke_Idoleo_rockw, OpenGEU06:23
Daisuke_Idoand it's pretty decent, actually06:23
dwidmannKrazyWolf: hmm, where are these steps at on there?06:23
tehkI have a friend asking me where he can activate the compose key from in 7.10, anyone have any idea? I only have a CLI in front of me06:23
Daisuke_Idoyou can just set up the repos in an existing install of gutsy and install opengeu-desktop06:23
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: i thought it had changed its name. i didn't know what the new name was, tho. thanks06:23

ixnayonthehombreok when i did it in Konsole it says that "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem06:24
dwidmannKrazyWolf: and none of those threw any errors?06:24
leo_rockwixnayonthehombre: then run dpkg --configure -a06:24
ixnayonthehombrekk thats what i thought... ty06:25
leo_rockwixnayonthehombre: after that try again06:25

Daisuke_Idoi just said that!06:27
* dwidmann doesn't care about exaile06:28
Daisuke_Idono, but it's still an issue06:28
leo_rockwthe amarok team called it the "we still love you release"06:28
dwidmannhahaha06:28
KrazyWolfdwidmann: you get all that?06:28
dwidmannKrazyWolf: yeah, looks like it took it okay06:28

dwidmannKrazyWolf: only one right?06:37
KrazyWolfdwidmann: yup06:37
dwidmannKrazyWolf: you wouldn't believe how much that little tiny detail right there could cause a person, it took me two days to catch that a couple weeks ago :(06:37
KrazyWolfdwidmann: so what does that mean?06:38
godkasleo_rockw: hmm well im really not sure whats missing i used (sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg) to write a new xorg.conf06:38
leo_rockwgodkas: sometimes i try to sudo things in slax06:38
godkaslol06:38
dwidmannKrazyWolf: means it isn't your fix :(06:39
godkasleo_rockw: Slax is like 0_o what did you call me?06:39
leo_rockwgodkas: usually sudo aticonfig --initial should do the trick06:39
KrazyWolfdwidmann: so am I going to be able to go back to windows without a problem ?06:39
KrazyWolfdwidmann: Or is this computer f'd now?06:39
godkasits not tho06:39
ixnayonthehombreabsolutely nothing happens when i do apt-cache search restricte |grep kubuntu06:39
godkasleo_rockw: Found fglrx primary device section Nothing to do, terminating.06:40
dwidmannKrazyWolf: well, I suppose you could, I would try a reinstall first though - if you had anyt other issues than this (which I presume you do), you should have a rough idea what you need to do to fix them so it should be much faster the second trip around.06:40
leo_rockwixnayonthehombre: what version of kubuntu are you using?06:40

karl_anyone know if 8.04 kubuntu is being released the same day as ubuntu?06:58
leo_rockwdek: to try, yes. to use it daily... i wouldn't go that far.06:58
leo_rockwkarl_: i don't see why not06:58
dekleo_rockw: why not?06:58
leo_rockwdek: it's not as functional and complete as 3.5 yet06:58
fitorialeo_rockw: gutsy06:58
leo_rockwdek: give it time. kde4.2 will be awesome06:58
karl_dek: its in development06:58
dekleo_rockw: but if KDE3 apps work, that shouldn't be a problem, is it?06:58
fitorialeo_rockw: gpg problem :S06:59
leo_rockwfitoria: then just add the repo and apt-get update06:59
fitoriado you have the gpg of that repo?06:59
leo_rockwfitoria: there is one, i don't have it. check in google06:59
karl_if you google search it comes up06:59

fitoriahow do i add it?06:59
karl_gooogle07:00
leo_rockwdek: well, no, it shouldn't.07:00
fitoriaok07:00
leo_rockwdek: but i don't like the new menu bar. and you can just kill that, that kills all the desktop background too.07:00
karl_leo_rockw: just don't update kicker?07:01
leo_rockwdek: and you can't just hide it and put kicker instead, because the bar doesn't have a hide option yet07:01
karl_ah07:01
fitoriaadding gpg....07:01
leo_rockwkarl_: kicker doesn't exist anymore in kde407:01

karl_anytime07:08
leo_rockwfitoria: did you make it work?07:08
ScorpKinghiya dwidmann :)07:08
karl_dwidmann: depends on the speed of your drives, i think07:09
dwidmannhey there scorpking07:09
dwidmannkarl_: more or less07:09
ScorpKingdwidmann: i get about 7.8MB/s on 100 network with nfs07:09
fitorialeo_rockw: nop :(07:09
dwidmannIt's pretty jumpy seeing as the other computer isn't nearly as fast, but it's varying wildly between about 8MB/s and 26MB/s07:10
ScorpKingdwidmann: it would be nice to know the speed on gigabit tho. let me know ;)07:10
ScorpKingah nice07:10
dwidmann(belieeeeeeve me, this computer can serve it out a lot faster than the other computer can take it in hehe)07:11
dwidmannWow, just saw a little peak of 30MB/s, wish it would hold steady07:11
leo_rockwfitoria: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-52993.html07:11
dwidmannKeeps stalling :(07:12
fitoriammmm07:12
ScorpKingdwidmann: that's bout the speed of an ide disk. 24MB/s actually07:12
dwidmannScorpKing: which is what the other computer has in it .. this comp has a 750GB SATA though07:12
ScorpKingdwidmann: ah ok. it won't go over 30 then.07:13
karl_ScorpKing: i don't think you can spin your disc that fast, anyways07:14
dwidmannI wonder why it doesn't even hold steady on the big files though, its strange07:14
ScorpKingdwidmann: well. it will show 30 and then stall for a few secs to write the data ;). i still want to set something like that up for myself07:14
ScorpKingmaybe its the caching system07:15
dwidmannScorpKing: gigabit ethernet? get yourself a gigabit switch and some cheap cat-6 cable.07:15
fitoriagot to go07:16
fitoriathanks for your help07:16

dwidmannah yes, that too, if you don't aleady have those07:16
fitoriaI'll keep trying tomorrow07:16
fitoriabye07:16
ScorpKingkarl_: true.. so it will be 24MB/s max then07:16
ScorpKingdwidmann: yip. i'll get it sometime. have other things to buy now. :)07:16
dwidmannScorpKing: and some big, SATA drives so you can pull out the full potential.07:17
ScorpKingtake care guys. its back to work for me. have fun07:17
dwidmannwill try07:17
ScorpKingdwidmann: will do :)07:18
dwidmannyou too 'kay?07:18
dwidmannLooks like realistically speaking it's averaging about 18MB/s07:20
karl_you could raid 10 them and get faster performance07:23
dwidmannkarl, sure, if I had money.07:26
tuanphamwhat about the money ? ;)07:26
dwidmanntuanpham: what, you want to give me some? :D07:26
dwidmannmy dream idea would be to build an nfs server with 4x1TB drives and a pci-e raid card, but where would I ever get the money to do that? :(07:27
karl_you could turn tricks in the evening07:28
karl_that's what i did07:28
dwidmannooooookayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy07:29
karl_: D07:29
tuanphami am back07:32

tuanphamand know that07:38
tuanphammaybe i will try to replace new cooler07:38
dwidmannMine has been acting really, really screwy. It's reading way out of whack ..... it's saying 60C on a cold boot, which is practically impossible. (it can't heat up that fast, especially not with this beastly HSF on it), maybe yours is behaving oddly too?07:39
tuanphami am not good at english07:40
tuanphamcan you explane clearer ?07:41
dwidmannThen again, not worth chancing melting the CPU, you should check that your heatsink fan is making good contact before doing anything else I think.07:41
tuanphami see07:41
tuanphami tried to go to bios setting up07:41
tuanphambut it have no configuation for it07:41
tuanphami use pavilion 2000 laptop07:42

thanasituanpham: get a bigger fan07:43
dwidmannprobably not a good thing, though a portable heater is always nice to have07:43
tuanphammaybe07:43
Daisuke_Idowell, since the devs aren't going to show us users of the "old" stuff any love, i'd better figure out how to get amarok compiled as a package07:43
flibbertygibbitwhat package contains mount.cifs ?07:43
tuanphamin some case07:43
tuanphami mind come from virus ?07:44

tuanphamhow can i run lm-sensers ?07:47
tuanphamjust installed07:47
flibbertygibbitdwidmann: yep that's the one, thanks07:47
dwidmanntuanpham: first you have to "sudo sensors-detect" I think, then "sudo sensors"07:47
tuanphamit run07:48
tuanphambut it have no us app ?07:48
tuanphambut it have no ui app ?07:49

tuanpham#----cut here----07:51
tuanpham# Chip drivers07:51

tuanpham#----cut here--07:51
tuanphamis that true ?07:51
dwidmannThat sounds good07:51
tuanphamIntel Core family thermal sensor...                         Success!07:51
dwidmannyou should have said yes and let it to it by itself, so you'll need to cut and paste that into /etc/modules07:52
dwidmanntuanpham: now run "sensors" in the terminal07:52
tuanphamNo sensors found!07:52
tuanphamMake sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need.07:52
tuanphamTry sensors-detect to find out which these are07:52
tuanphamit saids that :)07:53
tuanphammaybe installed not correct07:53
Daisuke_Idodwidmann, checkinstall --install=no rather than sudo make install is preferred, right?07:53
eagles0513875i have no idea how this person i know managed to tweak his acpi setting to give him 3 hrs battery life on his laptop07:53
tuanphama minute07:53
tuanphami have to edit module in ect07:54
thanasieagles0513875: that sounds like something i want to do ;)07:54
dwidmannDaisuke_Ido: well, Iono, checkinstall isn't perfect but at least it makes a ruidementary package .... seems a lot of people don't like checkinstall for some reason or another07:55
tuanphami have it in my module file07:55
eagles0513875thanasi: took him 4 months to get it right though i wanna do it and i would love to pkg it so that everyone can benefit from it07:55
dwidmanntuanpham: what does it ouptut when you run the "sensors" command?07:55

Daisuke_Idoleo_rockw, 1.4.7 doesn't help, i already have 1.4.8, i need 1.4.907:57
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: check the date07:57
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: in the forums they say those work07:57
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=470975207:57
eagles0513875thanasi: im goign to start working on it and maybe have something to upload to motu for revu sometime this summer07:57
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: i think he merged 1.4.7 with the svn patch07:58
thanasieagles0513875: sweet :)07:59
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: "For users of Kubuntu 7.10, packages are in gutsy-backports available from Adept Manager when you choose Unsupported Updates from the Updates tab of Manage Repositories."08:00
harmentalyesterday i was embarassed by some strange behavior in kubuntu....08:00
Daisuke_Idoleo_rockw, if only08:00
leo_rockwDaisuke_Ido: still not there, huh?08:01
harmentalafter plugging a projector and reboot....the system hung at boot....08:01
Daisuke_Idoi ahven't updated in a few hours, maybe08:01
leo_rockwharmental: i blame the projector :-P08:01
harmentali was only at home that i realised how to solve the "booting" problem....but the question is: shouldnt using a projector be easier?08:01
Daisuke_Idowhy would it be?08:02
harmentalleo_rockw: not funny when the whole lab (who is constantly advocating M$ Office products....) told me to use the room pc!08:03
leo_rockwharmental: i know...08:03
Daisuke_Idoharmental, i still blame the projector08:03
andrew__I'm trying to set up samba, however I can't seem to change my workgroup.  I changed it in all instances of smb.conf, but I'm still in "workgroup"08:03
harmentali had to squeeze my OpenOffice file into an UGLY Ms Office ppt...which obviously didnt respected fonts, margins, etc.....(I DO blame OO for that)08:04
Daisuke_Idoyou blame OO because powerpoint doesn't respect another file format?08:04
harmentalI even had to bare a lady telling me that using non-propietary software should be forbidden in the lab for compatibility issues!!!08:04
leo_rockwharmental: i blame the projector and Occam's razor says i'm right08:04
harmentalDaisuke_Ido: I blame OO for not exporting ppt as it should...08:05
leo_rockwharmental: even M$ office doesn't export as it should between different versions08:05
harmental(pdf was perfect btw....but no animations.. :o(08:05
harmentalleo_rockw: yeah...I know....but OO export feature NEVER works  :oP08:05
leo_rockwharmental: have you donated to OO.o lately?08:06
leo_rockwharmental: or sent them any patch?08:06
harmentalleo_rockw: what does that have to do with anything?08:06
Daisuke_Idoharmental, everything08:06
harmentalleo_rockw: dont get all dramatic...08:07
leo_rockwharmental: you can't demand that OO plays nicely with M$08:07
harmentalIm a student a not a programming expert....08:07
harmentalIm not demanding OO....08:07
Daisuke_Idojust ebcause it's free software doesn't mean that the people that depend on it (as you so obviously do) can't kick back a few dollars every once in a while08:07
harmentalall im saying is that the THOSE incompatibiliy issues are OO fault...08:08
harmentalthats it...08:08
leo_rockwharmental: your money could help programmers work harder08:08
harmentalother than that....I happy with the whole OO suite...08:08
andrew__Any idea why my workgroup won't change?08:08
harmentalleo_rockw: you are missing the point here...08:08
leo_rockwharmental: am i?08:08
leo_rockwi blame M$ office for not opening odt08:09
harmentalleo_rockw: look...I'm glad to participate in open projects when possible...08:09
harmentalI have provided some tricks for using wine with scientific software for instance...08:09
harmentalbut thats not my main occupation..08:09
leo_rockwOO.o developers don't find ppt exporting as vital as you do08:10
harmentalthe fact I have not donated to OO or that i have not provided ant bug fixes shouldnt mean I'm not allowed to say that the compatibility issues bet MS and OO are OO fault....08:10
harmentalas well as I can strongly assert that MS has NO compatibility whatsoever with OO, and thats MS fault....08:11
leo_rockwharmental: ppt is not a standard, odf is08:11
harmentalor that sometimes different versions of MS render different results from the same file08:11
harmental(thats with I use OO)08:11
harmentalif i wanted to make a "complain" about OO I would do it in the OO channel...not here....08:12
harmentalmine was just a comment....08:12
leo_rockwand i commented that i don't agree with your comment08:12
harmentaland ppt IS a standard....08:12
leo_rockwharmental: nope, it's not08:13
harmentalwhether we like it or not...08:13
leo_rockwharmental: pptx is08:13
harmental(i personally dont)08:13
harmentalleo_rockw: whats your definition of "standard"?08:13
leo_rockwharmental: ISO08:13
Daisuke_Idorecognized standard08:13
harmentalyou have different types of standards08:13
Daisuke_Idojust because it's "used" doesn't make it a "standard"08:13
leo_rockwharmental: no, de facto is not a standard08:13
harmentalits called de facto08:14
karl_ISO lost some credibility when they let OXML in08:14
karl_de jure08:14
harmentalkarl_: we all agree on that....08:14
leo_rockwkarl_: ^08:14
Daisuke_Idoharmental, a de facto standard is not a standard.08:14
harmentalDaisuke_Ido: guys.....we are on the same side here...08:14
harmentalbut you have to accept that being used by 90% of the people is a form of standardization08:15
* andrew__ sniffles :(08:15
tuanphamleo_rockw: can i setting up beryl on kubuntu ?08:15
leo_rockwharmental: i'm not saying we aren't. i'm just saying it's not fair to blame OO.o for not converting to a propietary format08:15
karl_but you asked what the definition of standards are08:15
leo_rockwtuanpham: beryl is not used anymore08:15
leo_rockwtuanpham: you can install compiz-fusion08:16
tuanphaminteats of ?08:16
karl_leo_rockw: especially when those formats have to be reverse engineered to work08:16
harmentalleo_rockw: and that has nothing to do with the standard issue...08:16
leo_rockwkarl_: exactly!08:16
eagles0513875how do i find out what version of kubuntu im using08:16
Daisuke_Idoit's a crutch that everyone works around because no one's big enough to knock the 800 pound gorilla off his pedestal...  yet08:16
Daisuke_Idoi'll continue using odt for my papers, and let office 2007 die the horrible death it deserves08:16
karl_true that08:16
harmentalDaisuke_Ido: i agree08:16
karl_i like the last version of the office suite much better08:16
eagles0513875!version08:17
ubotuTo find out what version of Ubuntu you have, type « lsb_release -a » in a !shell08:17
leo_rockweagles0513875: lsb_release -d08:17
harmentalbut odt shouldnt be imposed....thats also dangerous.....08:17
harmentalmy lab is a perfect example for that...08:17
harmentalthey are M$ lovers...08:17
foiblesdoes anyone know any launchers like engage?08:17
Daisuke_Idothen they need to be reeducated08:17
Daisuke_Idoor beaten with a hammer08:17
foiblesive been using gdesklets, but its laggy08:17
leo_rockwharmental: i don't even use OO08:17
foiblessame with superkaramba08:18
harmentalDaisuke_Ido: after four years i've given up...08:18
harmentalI choose my fights...08:18
Daisuke_Idoharmental, i'm just starting to make headway, getting a little success08:18
karl_harmental: the problem is that those formats are proprietary, so coders of open source softwares can't just look at the specifications and write code that matches them. Instead they have to make educated guesses to figure out how it works, which ends up being a poor implimentation. In this way, it is not a standard at all, except for coders of Microsoft Office.08:18
karl_in case it wasn't made clear08:18
Daisuke_Idoharmental, university or high school?08:18
harmentalmaking my boss understand that doing a PhD thesis with latex is the way to go was a pain in the ass!08:18
Daisuke_Idopurely out of curiosity08:18
leo_rockwharmental: haha, i hear you08:19

matthijsand the font is ugly13:29
localuserwas kubuntu 8.04 beta supposed to have pulseaudio pre-installed?13:29
matthijsi always used windows vista13:29
ds187matthijs: have you tried under the SystemSettings menu the "Appearance" submenu? there is the font-configuration for your kde-theme13:31

Dr_willispulseaudio is a feature of the gnome desktop.  I dont think its in the kubuntu  installs13:40
localuserDr_willis: ahh... that would explain it :)13:41
Dr_willisof coruse i always install ubuntu-desktop, and kubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop. and.....13:41

localuserheh13:41
Odd-rationaleso the kde version of PulseAudio is Arts/Phonon ?13:42
makdaknifeDr_willis: Odd-rationale: I think that PulseAudio sits beneath Arts... and is available for Kubuntu as well13:54
makdaknifeDr_willis: see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/Pulseaudio-diagram.png for an explanation13:54
makdaknifePulseaudio is not a gnome specific application13:55
Odd-rationalemakdaknife: is it included in kubuntu 8.04 ?13:57
Odd-rationaleby default?13:57
Dr_willisi tried running the pulseaudio config app under kde - and it dident like it.13:57
makdaknifeI may be wrong on this, but I think that Hardy Heron installs PulseAudio by default in Kubuntu13:57
Jucatoprobably wrong13:57
Dr_williscould be kubuntu/kde dosent start the puseaudio server by default.13:57
Jucatosince KDE 3 isn't setup to work with Pulse Audio13:57
Odd-rationalemakdaknife: how about if i did a cli install? would it be installed there too?13:57
Jucato(you have to do some config tweaking)13:57
JucatoDr_willis: he's right though, it's not a GNOME thing (or is it? :P). It's the audio counterpart of the *Kit stuff13:58
Dr_willisI dont know. Its not installed by drfault on the kde kubuntu that i saw. and i dosent run by default on the kde3 desktop The only apps ive seen that take use of the new pulse audio stuff are gnome apps13:58
makdaknifeOdd-rationale: I haven't tried to get it working as I have too many sound specific tasks to do to afford the downtime if it borks my currently working sound13:59
makdaknifesometime soon, I'm gonna do a dummy install on a different disk to check that everything works properly13:59
makdaknifeseems someone else managed to get pulse working fine with gutsy kubuntu: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=69262914:07
smlanyone else having trouble running pyscrabble in hardy kde4? hangs for me..14:10
ahmedhi i want to make my kubuntu 7.10 auto mount for my second hard disk i know i have to edit fstab but i dont know how to14:12
makdaknifeahmed: instead of editing the fstab... you might want to go to the advanced section in System Settings and have a look as Disk & Filesystem14:17
makdaknifeahmed: if you change to Administrator mode... you will be able to edit the options for the drives listed here... and you can specify to enable at startup14:18
ahmedok im there now what i have to do there14:18
makdaknifeahmed: this will help to prevent you from accidentally messing up a fairly critical configuration file14:18
ahmedi opened advanced section in System Settings14:19
makdaknifeahmed: click on Disk and Filesystems14:19
ahmedok14:19
makdaknifeahmed: now click on Administrator mode14:19
makdaknifeahmed: enter your password14:20
ahmedok i did that14:20
makdaknifeahmed: now select the disk partition that you want to automount, right click and click Modify14:20
ahmedok14:21
makdaknifeahmed: now you should be able to choose your mountpoint and select to enable at startup14:21
ahmedok i'll try that and see thanks for u14:21
makdaknifeahmed: no problem... its worth having a look to see what this has added to /etc/fstab, so that you understand what it has done14:22
makdaknifeahmed: also, it will teach you a bit about what happens under the hood14:23
llutzreading "man 5 fstab" and " man mount" would be more effective :)14:24
Jucato!fstab14:24
ubotuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions14:24
Jucatothat could help too ^^^^14:24
makdaknifefair enough... but its a whole lot easier to guide someone through some GUI options than it is to make sure that they have edited a file correctly14:25
makdaknifeunless you are referring to the learning about fstab14:25
Jucatothe learning part14:26
llutzmakdaknife: clicking in guis wouldn't help to understand how it works14:26
Jucatoof course that depends on whether the person wants to learn how it all works under the hood *at this time*14:26
makdaknifeyeah yeah... that's why I suggested having a look at the config file afterward14:26

KrazyWolfGood morning fellers16:44
geniiamrush: Change the partition type back to ntfs (or what it was before) and you should be able to access it again. This can be done from fdisk at commandline16:44
geniiamrush:eg: sudo fdisk /dev/<the partition name>                           then choose T to change type. Put the old number for proper type. Then W to exit and save the change16:46
geniiamrush: The normal number to put for partition type of ntfs is 716:47

amrush_genii .. yes17:19
KrazyWolfI can't fix my damn grub error 15!17:19
geniiamrush_: De-allocating it from gparted/qtparted will mean you need to re-allocate it again from in fdisk. So if the subpartition belonged to main dev of sda then to issue the fdisk command with sda as the arument, then (re)create the partition, with type 7 (for ntfs) and then W to write/exit17:19
MachinatorSyvercould anyone help me get my display to disable powersave? I disabled it in system setting > monitor & display, but it still goes black when my mouse is inactive for about 10 minutes17:20
amrush_genii .. and how would i do that ?17:21
geniiamrush_: So: sudo fdisk /dev/sda     (if sda was the main device)   then from in there youcan see available command with M17:21
KrazyWolfCan someone recommend me a linux distro that makes me, a windows user since 1995 that has NEVER seen linux or had had horrible experience with kubuntu over the past few days, want to switch over to linux after messing with some user-friendly not so technical with troubleshootings and such and make me curious about linux more to fully take it on? what is the best distro for my situation and my inexperience with such technacality to make 17:22
geniiamrush_: So if you had de-allocated sda1, then in fdisk, :  N (to make new partition) Choose Primary partition, then 1. After allocating in this way, make the Type number 7 if it was previously ntfs.Use P to list the partitions and make sure things look proper before using the W to write and exit17:23
sl4mm3ranybody here know how to setup folding at home?  .. fahmon is reporting total PPD = 017:24

rickestKrazyWolf: having a friend around who knows a little/some/lot of linux would be helpful, irc and google if that's not available.  After all, if you'd used a Mac since 95 and tried to install and use Windows the first time completely by yourself, that probably wouldn't go well either  :-)17:26
simcop2387-lapwell got it working partially by editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf BUT that won't work in general because not everyone has a setup where they're vpning everytime so they don't need to worry about having a possibly hostile dns server on that address, but it works for me my internal domains resolve correctly now17:26
geniiamrush_: If any of my instructions seem unclear, don't hesitate to ask me to clarify, etc.17:27
amrush_genii .. i chose primary partition .. it directly put it as a linux partition and didn't ask what type i want it to be17:28
geniiamrush_: Thats fine, it wants to use linux type as default. You can manually change it by T then to choose a hexadecimal sequence to put. To see the list of codes, L17:29

spirooIs it possible to re-organize the partition structure? Now I have sda1, sda2, but suddenly I got sda5 sda7, sda9. Is it possible to change it to sda1, 2, 3, 4 ,5 etc. This annoys me very much :D22:54
Dr_willisspiroo,  its how partitions work. first 4 PRIMARY partitiuons are 1 throiugh 4. any logical in a extended are 5+22:55
* Mr_Pan is away: 22:57
spirooYes, but first I have sda1, sda2 but after that it just skipping 3-4 and starting with sda5.22:58
Dr_willisis sda2 a extended partition? if so its holding the logical partitions 5+22:58
spiroono it isnt22:58
Dr_willis/dev/sda4           48410       48641     1863540    5  Extended22:59
Dr_willis/dev/sda5           48410       48641     1863508+  82  Linux swap / Solaris22:59
Dr_willisMy #4 is holding 5. note the same cylinder #'s22:59
Dr_willisI would double check fdisk -l output. and see.. Partitons just dont change from primary/logical :)22:59

Dr_willislook under the couch?23:02
spirooI guess I removed it for a long time ago. But is it possible to re-organize them?23:03
spirooI will do ...23:03
spirooSo everyone got a step up in number sorting .D23:04
Dr_willisYou can have 4 primaries # 1 theough 4, if any of them contain logical's  the logicals will be 5+23:06
Dr_willisIf you want just 1 through 4. then just make primary partitions No extended/logicals23:06
spirooI know, but now it should be: sda1, sda2, sda3(extended) => sda4, sda5, sda6, sda723:08
spiroobut it is now: sda1, sda2, sda3 => sda5, sda6, sda7, sda823:08
Dr_willisNo it will not be sda4.. 4 is reserved for a primary that you did not create.23:09
Dr_willisyou could have a primary past 3 if you wanted.23:09
Dr_willis sda1, sda2,;  sda3 => sda5, sda6, sda7, sda8,    ; Sda423:09
spiroolol, okay I give up :D23:11
