[00:00] only reason I know that's what it's doing is that I checked syslog [00:00] sysadm-myth, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs [00:00] thanks TuvOk [00:00] np [00:01] sysadm-myth, I luv myth too;) [00:01] and the command to update grub's menu.lst is update-grub [00:02] cool [00:03] noticed any issues with myth on hardy, that aren't in the bugs list [00:03] Tuv0k: So, following the instructions in the wiki has not helped. Any further thoughts? [00:04] :D 8 more days [00:04] swuboo, yeah do it right this time;-P [00:04] swuboo, no seriously, whats not working? [00:04] Tuv0k: Apps without native pulse output do not produce sound. [00:04] turn on the pulse tray applet [00:05] This is the best bug on the list https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1 [00:05] Tuv0k: Before I followed the wiki, they'd output fine through ALSA but lock Pulse apps out, now they just don't have sound at all. [00:05] Launchpad bug 1 in ubuntu "Microsoft has a majority market share" [Critical,Confirmed] [00:05] KDE is really simplified [00:05] swuboo, set gnome audio to esd [00:05] swuboo, run the pulse manager and see if its connected to the server [00:05] hello does is RC1 ready ? [00:05] Tuv0k: It's connected. [00:06] swuboo, thats great [00:06] how's the beta? any major problems? [00:06] All clients presently connected---i.e. GNOME, are ESD. [00:06] !bugs [00:06] If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug report at: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu - Bugs in/wishes for the bots can be filed at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu-bots [00:06] not use pavu pulse volume meter to make sure all the levels are up [00:06] i love that [00:06] :) [00:06] hey how can I get Konqueror to work with java [00:07] set the gnome system if thats what your in, to use esd, restart gnome [00:07] and that shoudl do it [00:07] shadow420, #kubuntu [00:07] !java | shadow420 [00:07] shadow420: To install a Java runtime/interpreter on Ubuntu, look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java - For the Sun Java runtime install sun-java6-jre from the !Multiverse repository (in !Backports for !Edgy) [00:07] !kubuntu [00:07] Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE, the K Desktop Environment, instead of Gnome. See http://kubuntu.org for more information - For support: #kubuntu - See also !KDE [00:08] Tuv0k: Volume levels are up in pavucontrol; Gnome's been set to ESD since forever. [00:08] well this is also the Hardy install [00:08] Tuv0k: Again, apps that actually have pulse output plugins work fine, it's legacy ALSA apps that aren't working. [00:08] swuboo, which app particularly is not outputing sound? [00:09] how can i upgrade to hardy using a special repository? [00:09] <_derspankster> swuboo: everything going well today? [00:09] my legacy apps output sound [00:09] derspankster: Sure. Except for legacy ALSA apps not playing nice with Pulseaudio. [00:09] unlink_, special? [00:09] Tuv0k: an apt-proxy [00:09] <_derspankster> swuboo: still? [00:09] _derspankster, he is almost there [00:09] Tuv0k I am using Hardy with KDE [00:10] shadow420, you may need to make a symlink [00:10] thats why I don't use Konq [00:10] you should know how to do that by now being a Konq user [00:10] Tuv0k ok so I should download FireFox [00:11] that should be installed? [00:11] no, not in kubuntu [00:11] no didn't come with it [00:11] swuboo, http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup [00:11] also it shouldn't be needed [00:11] shadow420: did you install sun-java? [00:12] I get the following error when trying to open a terminal, "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" ... what'd i screw up now? [00:12] Exilant I am go geting the JDK right now I want to be ale to compile java programs I am learn java [00:13] the JDK also comes with the JRE [00:13] swuboo, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/198453 [00:13] Launchpad bug 198453 in alsa-lib "Default ALSA device must use PulseAudio, otherwise ALSA applications may fail" [High,Confirmed] [00:13] ok, so just install that [00:13] I mean JRE is bundled in the JDK [00:14] i don't know, might be [00:14] you'll see wether you have java in your path afterwards [00:15] <_derspankster> I have an interesting issue today, if I run update manager it opens and sits and spins, never a pw prompt. I kill it then reopen and it works. Strange. [00:17] where do you change the pointer themes in gnome? [00:19] Can anyone direct me to a site to a howto on ldap authentication? I need to completely do away with flat file auth [00:19] Tuv0k: Okay, now I can get things to work if I tell them to use OSS output and use the pasdp command. Not elegant, but it works. [00:20] thats how its done, you keep hacking at it [00:20] but there is a huge bug list on it [00:21] Bug #198453 [00:21] Launchpad bug 198453 in alsa-lib "Default ALSA device must use PulseAudio, otherwise ALSA applications may fail" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/198453 [00:25] Can others reproduce this bug in Hardy that I found? [00:28] I'd really like to get some activity on the bug before the release, if possible! [00:28] hi... gtk2 application's window redraw methods seem to be really slow when resizing compared to qt, wxwidgets or other libraries. is gtk2 performance not that great? [00:28] Exilant where do I install the JDK [00:29] Exilant in /usr/? [00:29] why don't you just use the package? [00:30] if you install it without using dpkg, rather use /usr/local or /opt [00:39] Exilant where do I install the JDK in /us/? [00:39] Exilant where do I install the JDK in /usr/? [00:40] whereever you want, it's your pc [00:40] Exilant ok [00:41] I'd just use the package, but if not, /opt/sunjava or so would be a nice place [00:41] ok [00:47] Well that's irksome. Having set up the asound.conf to the recommended pulse settings, wineconfig successfully plays a test sound when set to ALSA when a pulseaudio application is playing sound already. But actually running wine won't give sound. [00:48] Exilant ok it's installed in /opt/sunjava [00:49] Exilant so now what needs to be done [00:49] put symlinks or the bin dir in your path [00:50] (maybe the install program did that already [00:50] Exilant I am not sure [00:51] I didn't see any symlinks being made [00:52] well, then it's probably /opt/sunjava/bin/java or so [00:53] hardy should include an updated intel wifi driver 1.2.0 does not allow me to connect to my college network a huge drawback for me [00:53] Exilant I will test it out [00:57] <_ZeuZ_> is there any way to manage the ammount of ram that Ubuntu's base system take as default? to reduce that ammount, of course... [00:58] Exilant blah I pointed Konqueror to java and restarted jave but still nop luck [00:59] _ZeuZ_, turn off unneeded services, switch to lighter desktop environment like xfce [00:59] Exilant blah I pointed Konqueror to java and restarted Konqueror but still no luck [00:59] the applet is not loading up [00:59] <_ZeuZ_> usser, Allready done services, and I want to keep KDE that is lower on resource ussage than Gnome.. [00:59] _ZeuZ_, kde4? [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> still my system is killing me in the ammount of ram taken... [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> No, 3.5.9 [01:00] _ZeuZ_, cause kde3 is a memory hog and in my experience takes more than gnome [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> not in mine, nor for benchmarks [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> kde4 is even more effective as for what to resources cal [01:00] _ZeuZ_, try kde4 its supposed to be pretty good [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> call* [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> I-ve tried it... [01:00] <_ZeuZ_> it's still pretty green [01:01] <_ZeuZ_> I don't really like plasma (yet) [01:01] <_ZeuZ_> nor the new "kicker" [01:01] shadow420: well, can you "compile" and run java programs from the cl? [01:02] haven't tried that because I don't have a java source program file [01:02] <_ZeuZ_> you mean source CODE ^^ [01:02] yeah source code [01:03] shadow420, want one? [01:03] <_ZeuZ_> apt-build java (or the name of the package) [01:03] <_ZeuZ_> it will do all for you [01:03] usser yeah I need one for a test [01:03] shadow420, hang on [01:03] usser ok [01:04] _ZeuZ_ on a pervious install of Gutsy I was able to use javac to compile if i remember correctly [01:05] Woooo! Got it. [01:05] ..How do I change themes via command line? [01:06] The answer was to replace libsdl1.2debian-alsa with libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio. Now most of the apps that were refusing to produce sound through pulseaudio are doing so with no problem at all. [01:06] I'm making a script to make Ubuntu ready for use after installation [01:06] thought you were learning java... [01:06] _ZeuZ_ well theres a jdk of sun java 6 but I am not sure it will be the latest version of java since the runtime is 6u5 [01:07] <_ZeuZ_> solution: try it ;) [01:08] shadow420, there try this ftp://whom.homeunix.org/guiffmpeg.tar.gz [01:08] Exilant yeah I just have to make sure I have the latest verison of the JRE so I can play games plus test the compiled java source codes [01:09] shadow420, just extract it and javac *.java [01:09] <_ZeuZ_> !nspluginviewer [01:09] Sorry, I don't know anything about nspluginviewer - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi [01:10] usser I just ran javac to see if bash sees it and it doesn't [01:10] <_ZeuZ_> what is nspluginviewer? [01:10] shadow420, what CPU do you have? [01:10] _ZeuZ_, nspluginwrapper [01:10] u mean? [01:11] <_ZeuZ_> no, nspluginviewer, perhaps it's part of it, it's located on /usr/bin/nspluginviewer [01:12] usser a P3 1ghz 512MB of RAM plus a decent SGraphics Card and Sound [01:12] shadow420, do you have sun-java6-jdk installed [01:13] shadow420, javac is in that package [01:13] usser well I also want to make sure I have the latest JRE which is 6u5 [01:14] _ZeuZ_, hm i dont have it and i have nspluginwrapper [01:14] shadow420, right thats the one i have i installed from the repos [01:15] I may have to get rid of gutsy because it's using an older version of java [01:15] and it's all screwed up [01:15] shadow420, oh u on gutsy? why u in ubuntu+1 lol [01:15] <_ZeuZ_> usser, dunno, I just saw it in htop and had to see what it was... gonna ask google [01:15] shadow420, so how is java installed now? did u just download the binary for java.com? [01:16] I am in Hardy right now but I have a Gutsy install [01:16] shadow420, i see, still how did u install java? [01:17] usser first I just used the downloaded binary [01:17] but now I am using the repo install [01:17] once it's finished that is [01:18] shadow420, ok so its still installing right? [01:19] usser ok it's installed [01:19] shadow420, try it see if it works [01:19] usser javac is reconized by bash [01:19] shadow420, well nice [01:20] usser but how in the hell can I fix it in gutsy to use the jatest version of java [01:20] because I am going to have to fix it [01:21] shadow420, have you used java-alt-setup to select the tools you want? [01:21] I want to be able to use java in gusty as well as hardy Beta until I request my free CD of Hardy [01:21] ...oh, n/m [01:21] shadow420, i just grab the binary from java.com and create symlinks [01:22] ok [01:22] my wired internet isnt working. worked fine from edgy to gutsy doesnt on hardy. i enabled dhcp on both wired conections and no love [01:22] although only one actually has a wire [01:23] shadow420, ie put sun's binary into say /usr/lib/jvm and then just create symlinks to javac java etc. in /usr/bin [01:23] ok [01:25] hello [01:25] is Youtube supposed to work out-of-the-box on Kubuntu 8.04/amd64 systems? [01:25] (using gnash) ? [01:26] Roey, yes gnash should handle youtube [01:26] ok all I see so far is a busy-wait cursor in that little youtube window. [01:26] given its gonna be slow but still [01:26] usser should I install firefox2 or wait until firefox4 comes out [01:26] shadow420, ehm... firefox3 you mean? [01:26] usser yea 3 [01:27] shadow420, firefox2 is in gutsy by default hardy defaults to 3 [01:27] shadow420, i'd suggest to lay off 3 until its actually released [01:27] usser Konqueror is pissing me off [01:27] usser I can install FireFox2 right now from adept [01:28] shadow420, do it, konqueror is not really a browser anyway [01:28] I have no problems getting flash to work with it [01:29] is it possible to copy an mbr? [01:30] I might keep gutsy around but I may just do away with it and use hardy from now on [01:31] which direction do resized partitions go in [01:31] nonewmsgs don't matter [01:32] shadow420: i thought they could only expand in one direction [01:32] you can grow and shrink === Tuv0k is now known as darthanubis [01:33] i am adjusting my windows ntfs partition [01:34] my caps lock seems to be stuck on [01:36] so after reinstalling and configuring ubuntu im unable to boot into windows. it loads, however i can only see my background image. [01:41] the site and the wiki too [01:42] gligorhoria, youo simply are asking foro the changelog [01:42] and thats on the wiki [01:43] things different from hardy and gutsy are all over the web [01:44] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyHeron/Beta [01:44] hmm, every where i loocked i spotted the decktop version and nothing aboute the server edition, ty i will check again [01:44] anyone heard if the the kernel in hardy RC will have better multitasking performance? I'm not at all sure, but compared to gutsy, performance in user apps is much less reliable when running cpu intensive processes as root, for me at least, and I suspect it is because of the new CFS scheduler introduced in the kernel from kernel.org . [01:46] that's why I use -server. [01:46] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/188226 [01:46] Launchpad bug 188226 in linux "Kernel should use CONFIG_FAIR_CGROUP_SCHED" [High,Triaged] [01:46] is there a way to tell the screen and graphics preferences my real horizontal/vertical rates before my eyes bleed or do i have to manually edit xorg.conf [01:46] rpedro yes, i had experienced some performance issues with CFS but the overall is better if u sum up the system and the heavy duty apps [01:47] I find it sucks -- much slower at some stuff. [01:47] For example, Pidgin freeeeezes for a while at every start. [01:47] Is it possible, using the alternate installer, to re-use an encrypted partition that's already setup? [01:48] i got some unexpected freezes 2 but i can't give u a full answer [01:48] DanaG: thanks, taking a look at that bug now. [01:48] Nice stuff should NOT take CPU time away from other things! [01:49] ... but with CFS as is, it does. [01:49] s/nice/root nice/ [01:50] dwidmann, yes [01:51] darthanubis: how? [01:54] folder [01:54] the age old question [01:54] put that question exactly as you typed it here in google and prepare to be amazed [01:55] you might want to man ln as well [01:55] also sun javas site has a howto [01:55] google java plugin [01:56] any 1 knows the ubuntu SERVER specs (i read the wiki and the site again btw) [01:56] anything like that will give you a gang of hits [01:56] darthanubis looks to me now like it's just down to what I need to modprobe to be able to run cryptsetup, I think [01:56] now your cooking with gas:) [01:56] shadow420, firefox plugins usually go into /usr/lib/firefox [01:56] shadow420, so cd /usr/lib/firefox [01:57] shadow420, sudo ln -s path/to/javaplugin.so [01:57] gligorhoria, what are you talking about? [02:02] redirected direct rendering lol [02:02] Twistage: No; it still requires git snapshots of everything interesting (libdrm, mesa, X). [02:03] And also is only for Intel cards ATM, and only (I think) for 965 chips, and ... :) [02:03] usser ok I checked it it did now start up it's still saying missing plugin === RAOF_ is now known as RAOF [02:03] shadow420, thats why if you want something done right..... [02:03] ok 1 more question, sorry for being anoing, if i want to use my ubuntu as a server and descktop would you recommend installing ubuntu server and xorg and all the other app on top or should i install ubuntu descktop and install lamp afterwards (i care aboute security mainly with the least amount of time required) [02:04] RAOF: Bah of course I get shafted by having the Intel, haha. [02:04] Twistage: It should *hopefully* make it into Intrepid; but that's by no means sure. [02:04] shadow420, check the paths did u specify it correctly [02:04] gligorhoria, I install from the alternate cd [02:04] that way I get the best of everything [02:04] shadow420, wheres your java folder double check that [02:04] !alt [02:04] The Alternate CD is a classical text-mode install CD. [02:05] ok [02:05] you got it [02:06] gligorhoria, then you pull down only what you want [02:06] hmm, now to figure out how to get lvm to start so I can play with my encrypted lvm volume :\ [02:06] dwidmann, are you using the alt cd? [02:07] usser no such file or directory is what I am getting when I cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins [02:07] hmm but will he ask me aboute the kernell and will the kernell be configured with the extra plugins they embaded in the server kernel ? :D [02:07] shadow420, hm then you dont have it [02:07] shadow420, nvm [02:08] shadow420 locate mozilla [02:08] to find out the path [02:08] DarkMageZ: of course, hmmmm, there we go [02:09] /var/lib/mozilla-firefox? [02:09] shadow420 might be [02:09] im going to cry if i don't find out what group is 46 [02:09] try changing to that directory [02:09] "what group is 46"? [02:09] yup [02:09] gligorhoria nope only contains extensions.d [02:09] whats that supposed to mean? [02:10] there is a line in fstab that i did not write [02:10] shadow420 u tried with root privilegies? [05:24] I am in the process of installing anI have XP as the primary, Vista is secondary and I shrank the partition using Vista. My question is if in installing Hardy 64 it picks the harddrive that is other than what vista sharnk the partiton for, if it will affect the bootloading so that I will not be to boot all three proplerly? [05:26] is there an issue with the b43 module? [05:26] hi everyone [05:26] how do i install the kubuntu resticted driver manager in systemsettings [05:26] I'm currently using 7.10 fresh install so i don' tmind installing Heron beta. Which is better to upgrade to stable when it is released? [05:26] heron i mean [05:27] MrGnu: I'm not quite sure what the question is. Everything should be fine if you install Hardy onto the empty partition. [05:27] MrGnu: when you say "primary" and "secondary", are you referring to separate physical drives, or partitions? [05:27] Welll - I've been running Hardy updates daily on my primary workstation for weeks - use it now [05:27] If you find an issue file a bug ;) [05:27] JohPhys: They are seperate physical drives [05:27] somebody know how the package name for the restricted manager [05:27] Hey is there any way to completely re-install all default packages to the ubuntu defaults via apt ? [05:28] Hammer89: If you ever have partition table damage, remember this word: TestDisk. It's a utility that can save partition tables, seemingly magically. [05:28] or completely remove all packages to the default ubuntu installation [05:28] DanaG: thanks :D [05:28] (But it won't fix damage within partitions, most likely.) [05:28] ive been searching google for over an hr [05:28] ionstorm: No, not with apt only. [05:29] RAOF, i seen a python script that did that [05:29] i know its not just with apt, do you know a good method? [05:29] ionstorm: find list of defaults, grep -v the dpkg -l output, use those non-matches to apt-get remove --purge ? [05:29] edoceo: I was just about to suggest that :) [05:29] edoceo, im suprised there isnt documentation on that [05:29] that would be handy to allot of ppl [05:29] If you make that script please post somewhere nice - I could use it too. [05:29] OMG!!!! [05:29] ionstorm: It's not really something that comes up often. [05:30] I have a fresh LTS server install I can get you the dpkg list from... [05:30] Just removed mysql and postfix so add those back to the list and tada! [05:30] XpHDB1 AND VSTA IS ON SDA 1 UBUNTU IS SLECELCTING SDB3 [05:30] RAOF, yes I want to figure this out then add it to the tutorials on ubuntuforums [05:30] Of course, you'd actually want to be a bit more sophisticated; you'd want to look at (say) ubuntu-desktop and build up a list of it's depends, then all of their depends, and so on, until you'e got everything. [05:31] MrGnu: please watch the caps lock [05:31] gettting now ... hang on [05:31] ionstorm: I suggest trying a bit of a python script; it shouldn't be _too_ hard to do that recursion with python-apt [05:31] micha__, it is called restricted-manager-kde [05:31] freakabcd: thanks [05:31] Sorry using A smaller keyboard [05:31] micha__, for kde ofcourse. the gnome one is restricted-manager [05:31] ionstorm: what are you trying to do [05:32] freakabcd: Isn't it actually 'jockey' now? [05:32] micha__, just reinstall ubuntu to the original state [05:32] i dunno. [05:32] in gutsy, i usually see a little progress bar before x starts, but i just get a black screen in hardy, then gdm all the sudden [05:32] is this normal? [05:32] i've never tried hardy install. i just do live hardy-beta sessions once in a while [05:32] omg omg omg omg!!! where's the "any key" I'm lost! [05:33] * afallenhope lol kidding [05:33] peeps that is normal if you dont have the splashscreen activated [05:33] P on your keyboard! [05:33] See i figure reinstalling to defaults will be easier for others than doing a full install with a livecd [05:33] well just an easy option anyways [05:33] ionstorm: http://edoceo.com/pub/dpkg.out [05:34] maybe say curl [that url] | awk '{ print $2 }' [05:34] Or use cut, or sed or perl or whatever [05:34] edoceo, thanks [05:34] lol, for screen resolution, my options are 800x600, 640x480, and "OFF" [05:34] sounds scary [05:35] peepsalot, i have heard that people have had expansions of resolutions upon install ubuntu-restricted-extras and also updating their systems [05:35] so - no ideas on the firefox lost applications list? Can't believe i'm the only one... [05:36] I had issues with my resolution after installing 8.04... it wouldn't let me set it higher than 800 x 600... it worked again after I installed the restricted drivers and restarted, though [05:36] critter, i wasn't so much commenting about the lack of options, i just that that "OFF" was a very strange resolution [05:36] s/that that/thought that/ [05:37] ahh so maybe its not ubuntu-restriced-extras but the restricted drivers. thanks Hammer89 [05:37] Synaptic: "libgweather is a library to access weather information from online services for numerous locations. This package contains shared libraries." My favorite Web-Service-Provider does not need libgweather. Why does Ubuntu Hardy install libgweather install by default? [05:38] Never mind John Phys thanks for trying, I found the solutoin. Thanks again. [05:38] bicyclist, may i pm you ? [05:39] MrGnu: sorry, I got pulled away for a bit [05:39] bullgard4: ? the clock weather thingy needs it [05:39] why ? [05:39] bike questions :) [05:39] Grin, ok. [05:40] No worries thanks all Have a good night [05:40] Anyone having problems with printing under firefox 3beta5 ? [05:40] I always get an xml error instead of being able to print [05:41] crdlb: Thank you for your information. Still, I do not need the clock weather thing. [05:41] bullgard4: so? [05:41] i just printed something through cups and firefox 3 beta5 so its working ok here [05:42] alright, 311MB of upgrades to install wwooooo [05:43] bicyclist I would suggest to downgrade to FF2 [05:44] I thought it was kinda odd myself that they'd use a beta version of FF as the default browser :P [05:44] it's because firefox 2 is _so_ terrrible :) [05:44] I thought it was kinda odd they used FF as the default browser [05:45] (it's so terrible that I used three r's ...) [05:45] shadow420, when you downgrade to firefox 2 do you still have issues with flash playback ? like firefox crashing after every 2nd flash video played ? [05:45] crdlb: lol [05:45] negative: FF3beta5 is pretty good - only crashed once in the last four days! [05:45] critter- I hardly had any problems with flash in FF2 [05:46] thanks. i'll keep that in mind [05:46] "hardly had any problems"... why does that strike me as mildly amusing :\ **looks at the time... ah... that must be why** [05:48] infact flash is working right now [05:51] critter- even though I am on a beta version of Hardy I am not testing my luck [05:53] !beta [05:53] If you installed a Alpha/Beta/RC version of Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and have been keeping it up to date, then you are already running the latest version of Hardy. [05:54] gnome [05:55] bullgard4 Gnome Virtual FileSystem [05:56] shadow420: Can you tell me why just GNOME needs "a filesystem where mount runs as a separate process which you talk to via dbus"? [05:58] bullgard4 no I can't I don't have a high rate of knowledge of linux [05:58] shadow420: Right. Thank you. [05:58] bullgard4: gvfs is the filesystem gnome uses for its automounting, I believe. [05:59] gvfs is used to access any non-local storage [05:59] Flannel: I will try to confirm that. -- Thank you. [05:59] ftp, sftp, smb, etc [05:59] crdlb: what about usb drives/cards/etc? [06:00] Flannel: well gio (the lowlevel part in GLib) has APIs to handle volume mounting, but the mounting itself is done by gnome-volume-manager + hal [06:02] Have downgraded to firefox 2 and can print there. With a fresh firefox 3 beta5 install i still cannot print. [06:02] I guess it probably contains some volume-related stuff [06:03] it's mainly about allowing seamless access to data anywhere no matter what protocol it's available on [06:04] bicyclist it's because FF3 is still unstable [06:04] why do you think I went with FF2 over FF3Beta [06:04] Well i am not angry about that, just wondering if it is a well known bug. [06:30] hmm that was odd [06:31] RAOF, errr, nevermind, that is a preference under the "Processes" tab. but really, there should be a preference for graphs if this is going to cause such crappy perfomance. [06:32] i don't really care that if it refreshes every second or so. [06:32] I want a jaggedy graph, not a nauseating lurchy one. [06:32] Imagine riding in a car that was doing that. [06:32] sliiideLURCH sliiideLURCH sliiideLURCH [06:33] Ugh, now my cube / cylinder is twitchyflickering. [06:34] hi... some update broke compiz for my nvidia/hardy system... another intel/hardy system still works [06:35] * DanaG still hasn't installed that nvidia-glx-new update. [06:35] .... no changelog. [06:35] That policy has served to keep me behind long enough to avoid some major breakages over the Gutsy and Hardy cycles. [06:36] compiz doesn't do anything anymore [06:36] that... and lurking in IRC> [06:36] if X just crashed for what appears like no reason, where would I go to check to see what happened? [06:36] no decorations.. no movement of windows using shortcuts... [06:37] <_sluimers_> How can I check wether nautilus gksu works? [06:37] peepsalot: To summarise the open GNOME bug on that: "We're not going to add a 'I'm using a rubbish driver' option when there's any chance that this will encourage drivers to be less rubbish". [06:37] <_sluimers_> I cannot open folders in admin :( [06:37] Fritzel: /var/log/Xorg.log [06:37] <_sluimers_> despite having installed the package [06:37] Fritzel: /var/log/Xorg.log or similar... but I guess there is nothing to find if it just crashed [06:38] How can i resume in wget? [06:39] Fritzel: look at the older ones. [06:39] Fritzel: thats what the .0 and .1 files are for [06:39] .1 is the older one [06:39] Fritzel: the bigger the number, the older they are [06:39] i should write my own GUI system monitor and call it heisenberg [06:39] well it jumps from 0 to 10 [06:39] but there is a 0.old which I'm looking at now [06:39] aggg sorry [06:40] the dot-number files are indicating the screen number [06:40] RAOF, have a link to the bug? [06:40] normally just .0 [06:40] what's this "i'm using a rubbish driver" point? [06:40] yea.. the .old file is the correct one [06:40] ahh ok the 10 was probably when I had to sysrq k then [06:40] nevermind I found it, driver appears to have taken a nap [06:41] driver problems might appear in dmesg as well [06:41] so much for the beta driver, it works soo much better, too bad it isn't stable :/ [06:41] ati? [06:41] nvidia [06:41] 173.xx [06:41] brb gonna revert to the old one [06:41] Fritzel: are you having problems with compiz and nvidia-glx-new? [06:42] compiz stopped working after some upgrade here... [06:42] I've essentially decided to avoid nvidia next time -- and go with ATI, frankly. [06:42] ah, i see that file-roller is still a piece of poo [06:42] no this is right off the sight, [06:42] starscalling [06:42] ste [06:42] site [06:42] DanaG: wth? [06:42] I'd rather have open-source crap than closed-source crap. [06:42] what's a good driver which minimises emerald corruption? [06:42] anyway brb let me get stable before doing anything else [06:42] k [06:42] nvidia 169.12 isn't doing that well [06:43] with crap levels roughly the same .... [06:44] seriously, it fails to extract about half the archives I throw at it [06:44] DanaG: the problem is that the nvidia driver just doesn't accelerate XRender to any decent extent; since the gnome-system-monitor graphs are drawn using Cairo, and cairo is using XRender... [06:44] * crdlb has never seen file-roller fail to extract something [06:45] DanaG: Again, with nouveau those graphs are smooth and take minimal CPU, because nouveau actually bothers to accelerate XRender. [06:45] though I've only ever used it for tar.gz, tar.bz2, and deb (ar) archives [06:45] Hmm, another random note: set cube to 3 sides, and stretch a window as far as it'll go. [06:45] peepsalot: Not offhand, sorry. Searching the system-monitor component of gnome-bugzilla should find it fairly easily. [06:46] DanaG: my max texture size is too low to do that :< [06:47] crdlb, http://download.jetbrains.com/idea/idea-7.0.3.tar.gz fails for one, if you care to give it a whirl. though, it's a 70MB download [06:47] Window border breaks, but window itself doesn't. [06:47] And it has a limit of some sort. [06:47] DanaG: turns white? [06:47] Yep. [06:47] crdlb, whereas tar -xvf completes with no errors [06:47] What's odder is that the window will go into the center of the cylindrified triangle. [06:47] that's because the shadows extend slightly beyond the windows [06:47] ... if it's in a certain position. [06:48] and the maximum size calculation ignores the shadows [06:49] Oh, and lighting with cylindrify is odd. [06:49] And atlantis with cylindrify is oddly, but amusingly, "squishy" [06:49] Or bouncy -- it bounces up a bit on rotate. [06:50] crdlb, i've had issues with file-roller being unable to extract various files on basically every Ubuntu install i've used [06:50] is cylindrify an actual word? [06:50] Beats me. [06:50] Oh, and atlantis2 ignores "deform only on mouse rotate" [06:51] Swim with the fishes! [06:52] DanaG: do you know if that window border breaking is a problem with emerald or nvidia drivers? I can can instigate it right now just by switching tabs in chatzilla [06:53] all window border problems are nvidia's fault :P [06:54] i'm rather happy that i dont have to rely on sides of a cube to manage my tasks on my 22" lcd. the effects are pretty, but functionally i am ok. [06:54] * DanaG wishes HP would put a 3-series in the 8510p / 8510w. [06:54] * DanaG wishes Asus would release a Cardbus or ExpressCard "Xonar" sound card. [06:55] <_sluimers_> I cannot open folders as admin despite having installed nautilus-gksu [06:55] * DanaG wonders if he should get 1920x1200 or 1680x1050 on 15.4". [06:55] <_sluimers_> I cannot open folders as admin despite having installed nautilus-gksu, what could be wrong? [06:55] critter-: No one has to rely on it, but it can be very convenient. [06:55] !nautilus-gksu [06:55] Sorry, I don't know anything about nautilus-gksu - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi [06:56] DanaG: 1920x1200? Where can you get that on a 15" for a reasonable price? [06:56] !nautilus [06:56] Sorry, I don't know anything about nautilus - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi [06:56] i'm not into flipping cubes if everything i need fits in one window. [06:56] oh wow [06:56] critter- I agree with you [06:56] _sluimers_, you've tried sudo gksu nautilus and can't open folder in hardy ? thats odd [06:56] You guys obviously don't open enough stuff :) [06:57] <_sluimers_> critter- , I am reading right now about this in the bugs section [06:57] i've got tons of stuff open now. i'm glad i'm not actively flipping the ones that are open and not in use :) [06:58] sudo gksu? Why? [06:58] Because you're crazy? [06:58] RAOF: depends how you define reasonable. [06:58] DanaG: True, I suppose :) [06:58] If I configure the 8510p and 8510w to the same specs (except FireGL instead of Radeon), aside from the monitor, they aren't too different. [06:58] yes i did not catch that [06:59] anyone running dual monitors with nvidia? [06:59] peepsalot: Yes. [06:59] I don't remember what it came out to, though. The 'p' has a 15% deal, the 'w' has a 24% -- or something like that. [06:59] (Come on nouveau!) [06:59] Give it a try. [06:59] DanaG: Linky? I'm lazy. [07:00] RAOF, the screen resolution app Detect displays button doesn't seem to do anything for me [07:00] peepsalot: Yes. That's because nvidia are too cool to use X's dual-screen infrastructure. [07:00] I have no idea of the quality of the WUXGA, though. [07:00] (To be fair, X's dual screen infrastructure doesn't handle dual *cards*, which nvidia does) [07:01] RAOF, hmm, so what is used to configure them [07:01] peepsalot: You'll need to install & use the nvidia-settings package. Also, nvidia doesn't properly populate the Xinerama info if you change monitors after you start X, so you want to have both monitors plugged in at boot. [07:02] argh, that's annoying [07:02] Yes. Come on nouveau! [07:03] They have prebuilt and "cto" (custom to order, or something like that) [07:04] RAOF, how are those noveau drivers coming? [07:04] RAOF: trick for getting Intel WiFi with FreeDOS: select "no wireless" and then go to the bottom and get an Intel card "a la carte" [07:05] can anyone give me any idea whether swapping nvidia videos cards for another model can significantly improve your standard desktop video rendering quality ? i picked up a lower end card that had good visual ratings on newegg. i have no idea if newer cards might be better or perhaps another brand [07:05] Heh, blu-ray drive is 500 bucks. [07:05] critter-: If you're pushing the video over a DVI cable, chances are it's not going to make any difference at all. [07:05] I wish hd-dvd had won -- that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. [07:05] thanks RAOF [07:06] ALso note the coupons. [07:07] Heh, want two 4GB SODIMMS for 1200 bucks? [07:08] I don't know if that's real value, or grossly inflated by HP. [07:10] SODIMMS? [07:11] Asking for definition, or the size? [07:11] DanaG definition [07:11] Small-Outline Dual Inline Memory Module. Notebook Memory. [07:11] oh ok [07:12] Heh. I think 8GB ram is possibly overkill just yet. Especially when 4GB of ram is comparitively cheap. [07:12] DanaG you can probly get it cheaper at a computer store or Best Buy? [07:13] $2.3K doesn't seem too bad for all that. Although I wouldn't actually want that laptop; I want something 13". [07:13] Or even smaller. [07:14] Hmm, they have some other stuff with notebook GPUs. [07:14] heh the computer I want is a Desktop but it's based price is over 3K after customization it comes out to about 7K [07:14] Oh yeah, was that for the P or W? [07:15] er [07:15] stuff with weaker GPUs. [07:15] DanaG: that was... the one with a 1920x1200 screen. [07:15] w. Workstation. [07:16] hmm, context sensitive tab completion does not seem to be enabled by default [07:16] What's your market segment you want? Small and light, or "balanced mobility"? [07:16] you guys know what controls that? [07:17] "Balanced mobility" would probably describe me. Something like a 13" MBP would rock my socks. [07:17] darthanubis: Thank you for your information. [07:17] for ex: sudo aptitude install firef [07:17] peepsalot: the bash-completion package, most likely. [07:17] Dana light and balanced [07:17] ah [07:17] peepsalot: Or you could install zsh, which is made of awesome. [07:17] !find zsh [07:17] Found: zsh, zsh-dbg, zsh-dev, zsh-doc, zsh-beta (and 3 others) [07:18] !zsh [07:18] Sorry, I don't know anything about zsh - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi [07:18] bullgard1, got your wifi working? [07:18] RAOF, was bash-completion defaulted on in feisty and gutsy, or am I on crack? [07:18] Look at the other categories. [07:18] yw [07:18] i loose my keyboard layout after restart. anyone? [07:18] peepsalot: It's been split out of the main bash package in Hardy, yes. [07:19] owen1, its a bug, search google next time, you'll see it [07:19] darthanubis: ok. thank you. [07:19] !google [07:19] google is the helpers' friend; many newer users dont have the google-fu yet; For GNU/Linux: http://google.com/linux [07:19] np [07:19] RAOF: balanced-mobility category; smallest is 14". http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/321957-321957-64295-321838-89315.html [07:20] darthanubis: My wifi is working in Gutsy. I did not try to get it working in Hardy yet. [07:20] anyone getting 3GB with eSATA? [07:20] 3.0Gbps* [07:20] bullgard1, you'll be fine [07:21] Real bottleneck is the hard drive. [07:21] On SATA. [07:21] GBps or Gbps? [07:21] big difference [07:21] Gbps [07:21] which is why i corrected myself. [07:22] Lenovo does high-res small screens. [07:22] And they have keyboard lights, too. [07:22] Yeah. Lenovo may be the manufacturers of my next laptop [07:22] the driver is only allowing the chipset to get 1.5Gbps, where as expresscard allows up to 2Gbps [07:22] Thinkpads are the best laptops :) [07:23] tanner, still, that would be 375 MB/s which is more than any drive I've heard of can handle [07:23] last i checked max was somewhere around 50-70MB/s [07:23] My Hitachi 7K200-200 does 60 to 70, tops. [07:24] My old Fujitsu 5400rpm did something more like 40-50 tops. [07:25] tanner, IIRC i had a sata drive where you had to set a jumper to make it fullspeed or something like that [07:25] or a jumper on the mobo, or both, can't remember very well [07:25] its not the drive [07:26] its the driver. [07:26] >.> anyway. back to work [07:28] * DanaG wonders what distro he should put in VirtualBox. [07:28] Hardy is my primary OS. Nothing has ever taken the place of Ubuntu for me. [07:28] ALL OF THEM! [07:28] Has anyone noticed in hardy, that when most (all?) gtk windows are created, they momentarily look... like a TV out of sync? [07:29] DanaG, the only use I have for VirtualBox is to run XP [07:29] BHSPitMonkey: You're running a composite manager, aren't you? :) [07:29] RAOF, on the contrary. [07:29] No composite manager? Not compiz, kwin, metacity, or xcompmgr? Wow :) [07:29] Nothing past the built-in compositing capabilities of Gnome 2.22. [07:29] DanaG, i was messing around, trying a bunch of stuff the other day, linux mint, gOS, foresight, gobolinux [07:29] Right. So you *are* using a composite manager :) [07:29] RAOF, ah, well. I said I was on Hardy. [07:30] BHSPitMonkey: You may not have turned on the metacity composite manager :) [07:30] Another thing: I like orange. [07:30] *couldn't get all of them working correctly in vbox though [07:30] RAOF, I'm using defaults. [07:30] I.e., "None" in the Desktop Effects tab. [07:30] Anybody else been having VirtualBox irreversably grab keyboard? [07:30] And host key not working. [07:30] Nope [07:30] BHSPitMonkey: Oh, so you may _not_ be using a composite manager! Strange. You can check the /apps/metacity/general/composite_manager gconf key. [07:31] RAOF, I am getting the compositing effects in Gnome. [07:31] Ah, right. So that's enabled then. [07:31] But those are a standard feature of 2.22. [07:31] Anyway, this is an X problem, which is fixed in 1.5 [07:31] belenix? http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=belenix_07&num=1 [07:31] (As well as making nouveau _even faster_) [07:32] RAOF, and when do we see 1.5 in hardy? :) [07:32] Argh, I wish you could send SMART commands over Firewire. [07:32] My external hard drive unloads its heads after 0.5 seconds idle. [07:32] BHSPitMonkey: Once the universe has undergone a big crunch, and we reset everything :P. [07:33] BHSPitMonkey: It should be in Intrepid, though. [07:33] Playing music from ntfs-3g results in a SSSHCLICK every 5 seconds. [07:33] From ext3: a "crunch" (seek) noise every 1 or 2 seconds. [07:33] RAOF, what a shame that hardy must be pushed out with such a glaring bug. [07:33] Imagine taking music and inserting a "crunk" noise. [07:34] Is there any easy way to keep a drive active so it doesn't go idle? [07:34] Seems delay-worthy, given the LTS and all. [07:34] http://xkcd.com/ [07:34] obligatory [07:34] BHSPitMonkey: Except we'd need to delay like 3 months :) [07:35] ethana2, why was that obligatory [07:35] the comment [07:35] with the broken hard drive noise and music [07:35] BHSPitMonkey: It's also more apparent in metacity than in Compiz, generally. [07:35] ethana2, ah. [07:35] ethana2, permalinks are always more relevant than homepage urls :P [07:35] yup, I know.... sorry [07:36] Anybody here using catalyst 8.4? [07:36] http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9119 [07:36] that library mentioned.... find it and run 'strings' on it. [07:37] Aargh, that hard drive is going to drive me batty. [07:38] crunk [07:38] crunk [07:38] crunk [07:38] crunk [07:38] ... you get the point. [07:38] I see that word on t-shirts [07:38] what does it mean? [07:38] morning all [07:39] You know what would be frikkin awesome? If "Dynamic Twinview" was, you know, _dynamic_. [07:39] morning! [07:39] beats me. I'm using it as a sound effect for "hard drive seeking" [07:39] So is the rc release yet? [07:39] not that I can tell [07:39] probably soon, if there is one [07:39] lol [07:39] haven't had a look at the release schedule for a while [07:39] hi, i'm using kubuntu hardy and under kmenu->system there is no harware manager any ideas? [07:40] ethana2: It was delayed. Meant to be already out. [07:40] delay [07:40] really? [07:40] RAOF: interesting [07:41] Yes. It shouldn't delay the actual release, but there's a bit of a problem with the actual making of the CD :) [07:41] what would be the prob? [07:41] oh [07:41] Argh, once vbox grabs keyboard, it never lets go. [07:41] <_ruben> RC is scheduled for today, not sure if they'll make it [07:41] I had to enable AllowDisableGrabs in xorg.conf to un**** my keyboard. [07:42] what time today [07:42] lol [07:43] DanaG, sure you're not pressing the wrong ungrab key? IIRC it's only the Ctrl on the right that works [07:43] Is there no compiz settings manager package in Hardy? [07:43] sa, what yall think of the theme on hardy? [07:43] mysticdarkhack, I like it:) [07:43] Yup, pressing right ctrl. [07:43] Has anyone else had problems with openoffice.org packages colliding? [07:43] mysticdarkhack, it's nice. first time(that i've seen) where they incorporated the animal into the artwork [07:44] Even setting host key to scroll lock doesn't help. [07:44] openoffice won't install because openoffice-core and openoffice-common conflict [07:44] yes by install compizconfig-settings.manager [07:44] I don't like the particular brown in the current wallpaper. [07:44] I'd like something more like something from the Gutsy wallpaper's pallete. [07:44] DanaG: You are advanced enough to change it... [07:44] But just for the background. [07:44] Even my mother is :) [07:44] better: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/Fela_Kuti [07:45] Use the thing linked to above 'gdm theme' [07:45] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/Fela_Kuti?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=color-grey-translucent.svg [07:45] That'd be a nice secondary one to add. [07:45] compizconfig-settings-manager I meant [07:45] is there similar application like sizer in vista where you can have predefined window size to change the size quicky [07:45] mysticdarkhack, thanks:) that's the one I've been looking for [07:46] pen, your description is lacking [07:46] BHSPitMonkey: have you used a program called sizer in windows? [07:46] np [07:46] BHSPitMonkey: is there a app like that in ubuntu? [07:46] DanaG: Wow. That svg brings firefox to its knees. [07:46] No, or else I would have understood you. [07:47] BHSPitMonkey: ok, sizer is app which enables you to have predefined size for windows. [07:47] that svg has a default rendering resolution set too high [07:47] All SVGs do, for me. [07:47] All ones on that page, at least. [07:47] glad they finaly imput 3d on compiz-fusion [07:47] woohoo [07:47] lol [07:47] BHSPitMonkey: so if you say want to change the size of the window to a precise degree you can accomplish that with sizer [07:47] mystic: what? [07:47] BHSPitMonkey: it's very good for web developers [07:47] pen, oh [07:47] BHSPitMonkey: is there not? [07:48] pen, you can have the resolution display when resizing windows [07:48] 3d effect on the cube ethana2 [07:48] BHSPitMonkey: but I want a quick and precise resize [07:48] pen: So, I believe that devilspie will do what you want. And you can probably get Compiz's resize to do what you want, too. [07:48] pen, let me show you something, hold on [07:48] BHSPitMonkey: I hope there is such program exist in ubuntu [07:49] pen, http://www.nicholasroussos.com/general/browser-hacks/ [07:49] surprisingly ubuntu getting a lot of attention all over [07:49] does anybody had problem with jockey-kde for registered drivers? [07:49] pen, you can drag those Resize links to your bookmarks toolbar. [07:49] company thinking of switching to ubuntu server [07:49] Oh, and VirtualBox gets a GPF if I start it after suspend and resume. [07:50] BHSPitMonkey: well that only works for browsers [07:50] BHSPitMonkey: sometimes I want my other windows works too [07:50] pen, you said you used it for web development :) [07:50] pen, take RAOF's advice, then [07:50] BHSPitMonkey: yea you are right, but i also want that too :P [07:51] pen, and also enable the numbers I was talking about. [07:51] BHSPitMonkey: numbers? you means the links? [07:52] RAOF: k [07:52] RAOF: how can I do that? is there a documentation for that? [07:52] pen, no, the feature where it displays dimensions while resizing. [07:52] BHSPitMonkey: I already have that enabled :) [07:52] damn you're picky [07:53] BHSPitMonkey: it's just a little bit slow and tedious with touchpad [07:53] pen: I don't know of any; I've never tried to do what you describe. There probably is some, and google will likely find it :) [07:53] BHSPitMonkey: :P [07:53] pen, if you're only working with a laptop touchpad, precision was never something you had in mind :) [07:53] click! [07:53] or deserve [07:53] argh, damn WD. [07:53] 0.5 seconds is TOO SHORT! [07:53] BHSPitMonkey: that's why I want to have that functionality [07:53] RAOF: k [07:53] Imagine if your engine turned off when you were stopped for 0.5 seconds. [07:54] Did you try the SVG with custom colors? [07:54] I like it way better than the fixed color. [07:57] And I wish it'd stop abusing my hard drive. [07:58] !bug 202730 [07:58] Launchpad bug 202730 in linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 "IR not working with AOpen MP965-DR" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/202730 [08:00] does anybody had problem with jockey-kde for registered drivers? [08:00] i was happy to see the new boot/splash loader has the right resolution! But what about the aspect ratio, it such a shame to see the ubuntu logo stretched out over a widescreen [08:02] !bug 197771 [08:02] Wobbo, sounds like it wasn't at the right res after all [08:02] Launchpad bug 197771 in ubuntu "[hardy] numpad not working as expected after boot" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/197771 [08:03] BHSPitMonkey: it is, i checked [08:04] Gateway was lame and didn't give any widescreen VBE modes. [08:04] And nvidia is lame and doesn't have accelerated framebuffer. [08:07] Looks like fileroller is asking me for a password when there's a damaged RAR file on a multiple archive [08:08] Which is really weird [08:08] Lunks: Maybe it can't tell whether it's damaged or encrypted? [08:08] I just lost 2 hours of my life trying to find a password for something which doesn't have a password. :P [08:08] swuboo: Shouldn't it? =P [08:09] It's not really user-friendly [08:09] * DanaG needs a good backup app. [08:10] Lunks, have you tried unrarit? -it's a proggie for windows, that tries tons of different passwords on rar files. [08:10] * Lunks *needs* to backup [08:10] DanaG: Nvidia is the least lame of them all, ati is way lamer [08:10] DanaG: You've been thinking about that really long. Which ones have you rejected already? :) [08:10] Lunks: It's probably better to err on the side of encrypted when it's confused; after all, wasting some time looking for a nonexistant password is a better idea than simply declaring a file to be corrupt when it isn't. [08:11] faubackup takes too long and uses too much space each time -- but perhaps nothing can do any better on ext3. [08:11] DanaG: Have you considered gmailing the contents of your hard drive to yourself file by file? [08:11] ttkeppi: I found out it was damaged using some crack tool, which complained [08:11] 200 gig hard drive, on gmail? I don't think so. :P [08:11] I DO have a backup drive -- just not ideal software. [08:12] DanaG: Well, really, just the package list, documents, themes, and config files. [08:12] DanaG: did you try and reject dirvish too? [08:12] I didn't see a "don't cross filesystem boundaries" option. [08:12] DanaG: it does have that. [08:13] Hmm. Still want a GUI, though. :( [08:13] ctrl+w has some issues with me. :P [08:14] swuboo: It was my fault, I skipped the par files as I think they're winrar-only files. [08:14] hardy beta 1 alternate installer, commandline install, grub failed to install [08:14] installer givesno reason [08:14] does anyone know what the secret is to get realplayer working>? [08:14] DanaG: hmm, if you want a GUI because what you want to back up varies day-to-day, all of the rsync based ones will end up being a hassle, I'm afraid :/ [08:14] reason nowhere to be found [08:14] lilo installed fine [08:14] Actually, a non-gui but works-like-Apple's-thingy one would work for me. [08:14] Simple but space-efficient. [08:15] swuboo: So I was mistakenly led to believe the file had a password [08:15] I just hope my external drive doesn't load-cycle itself to a premature death. [08:15] DanaG: Acronis drive image? ..if i remember correct, you can set the amount of compression [08:15] Not even a debconf for dirvish? [08:15] and the kernel likes to make a looong pause after detecting the ide devices [08:15] hrmpf [08:15] DanaG: But if I recall, you did not need an hourly backup? [08:15] Right. [08:16] DanaG: two (of if one really wants, more) config files, very flexible. [08:16] I have a partition that I'll say to "use all free space if you need it" -- and taper off snapshots. [08:17] I also want to exclude caches and /tmp and such. [08:17] !dirvish [08:17] Sorry, I don't know anything about dirvish - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi [08:18] Ooh, remember that transparent svg? [08:18] Try it with atlantis2 cube, and the following color settings: [08:18] DanaG: the exclusion is easy, making it autoexpire based on disk space and not time takes a shell script still, I think, but a simple one. [08:18] Lunks: True. But think of it in the other direction--if it had been *encrypted* and Fileroller thought it was corrupted, it would be quite impossible to open, unless there's an option for forcing fileroller to use a password on it. [08:18] vert gradient from #143D67 to #673614 [08:19] DanaG: it's hard to talk with you, you never addressing people you talk to. But I can still walk you though the set up process some day, if you wish [08:19] Lynoure: oh, I guess that'd help, using names. Thanks. [08:19] erm :-\ [08:19] And I'll move my media back to my NTFS partition on the drive, since having it on the ext3 one abuses the drive just as much as on the ntfs-3g. [08:20] DanaG: it helps a lot when a person is on many channels, yes. Thanks. [08:20] swuboo: Yeah, but that's kinda abstract, almost philosophical =P [08:20] Lunks: Schrodinger's archive? [08:22] Does anyone know anything about the conflict between openoffice.org-common and -core? [08:22] is there anyway I can attach realplayer codecs to a different player? realplayer is garbage [08:24] swboo: modified mac os image [08:25] Anybody try that svg with those colors? [08:25] Oh, and turn off "draw water" [08:25] It doesn't cylindrify the water. [08:26] if you put a password on the bios would that make so you could not even use a cd to over write some one os [08:26] omg, i cant get X server to work >.> [08:27] tarelerulz: you would have to reset the bios jumper to access the commputer [08:27] tarelerulz: If I understand you, yes. You could put a password on the BIOS preventing someone from changing the device boot order, and if the CD drive was below the hard drive, it would be impossible to overwrite the OS via CD without at *least* two mintues' effort. [08:28] Uh, physical access > all. [08:28] Well, okay, less than two minutes if they don't have to root around looking for the CMOS battery. Security through poor cable management, hurrah! [08:28] It's called you pull the HDD. [08:28] Or pull the CMOS battery. [08:28] Even better. [08:28] SeveredCross: Note that I said impossible "without at least two minutes' effort." [08:28] Yeah, yeah, yeah. [08:29] Well, I sure you could get around it ,but for someone just sealing your computer it would be way work then they would want to do [08:29] Sealing or stealing? [08:30] haha stealing === Dana1 is now known as DanaG [08:30] No, I don't think so. If I'd gone to the trouble of stealing a computer, resetting the BIOS and throwing on a fresh copy of XP to cover my tracks wouldn't really be all that much effort. [08:31] I was just telling someone about why linux is more security the windows. talking about user and passwords and such [08:31] I have another problem after upgrading to Hardy: HAL doesn't start [08:31] Well, if you put a password on the BIOS and then epoxy your case shut, that would probably do it. [08:31] swuboo: you could still be tracked by mac address [08:32] ttkeppi: Which can be changed pretty easily, even in Windows. [08:32] and if I start it manually, with sudo /etc/init.d/hal start, then hald hangs and can't even be killed with -9 [08:32] My next laptop I get will have Intel AMT... just for the sake of experimentation. [08:32] swuboo: didn't know that in windows that's possible [08:32] And perhaps that LoJack thing? Maybe? [08:32] I was just telling them why I think windows get hacked so easy [08:33] I would like to see the securty protection in action [08:33] ttkeppi: I seem to remember a console command for Windows that will do it---even if I'm wrong, an NIC isn't that much trouble to go to either. [08:34] tarelrulz: There's no such thing as security against physical access when it comes to PC's. [08:34] Anybody try that svg? [08:35] tarelrulz: Let me rephrase that: there's no such thing as security against attackers *with* physical access when it comes to PC's. [08:35] There certainly is security against physical access itself---doors come to mind. [08:35] II would like to see it over the net [08:36] I know I more then like don't do it write [08:36] tarelrulz: No one's using a CD to overwrite your OS over the net, either. [08:36] swuboo: Hmmm. Not even encrypted root filesystems? [08:36] jblack: That's really just a question of time, isn't it? [08:36] ATA passwords? [08:36] Time. [08:36] Depends on the password, perhaps. [08:36] Especially if you make a password with international characters. [08:37] Oh, how about against smart-card security? Can you use that in any way? [08:37] A password that would take infinitely long to crack would take infinitely long to type in, too. Everything else is finite. Like I said, time. [08:37] Given enough time, people can dig through concrete with spoons. [08:37] jblack: Yes. Unattended concrete is not secure against spoons, it's true. [08:37] I am just wondering you all run linux like I do . Is there job you can get working with just it ? [08:38] Depends what the spoons are made of. [08:38] Especially when the power of spoons doubles every eighteen months, and they only have to get one lucky scoop. [08:38] There is no...... never mind. [08:38] I have a point. Just because something -can- be done, doesn't mean it can be done in time to still have value. [08:39] ATA password will make it so people will steal the laptop for the laptop, but not get the data. [08:39] I got a laptop for free, when my father in law told that if I can make it work, it's yours.. So I set cd to bootable device, and booted ubuntu install.. and it was done.. there was some hdd encryption proggie, that i ignored, since i didnt need the data.. [08:40] tarelerulz: i wouldnt feel save to do onlinebanking with windows. with linux i can sleep better [08:40] jblack: That's entirely true. [08:40] but i do believe that there might be some bruteforce proggie that would have opened the hdd [08:40] Good security, whether physical, logical or otherwise, comes down to one thing, and one thing only. Slowing adverseries down enough that the effort greatly exceeds the value. [08:41] jblack: like in the pwn to own thing [08:41] jblack: Physical security can also come down to injuring or killing them, it probably bears mentioning. [08:41] ^_^ [08:41] Who's "them" ? [08:42] "adveraries". [08:42] swuboo: nice, how many adveraries do you know? [08:42] We may not have the same concept of who an adversary can be. [08:42] ethana2: None, it was jblack's word originally. [08:42] jblack: Or what physical security might consist of. [08:43] swuboo: ^_^ [08:43] jblack: A door lock slows someone down to the point that the effort exceeds the value; an armed guard increases the risk so that it exceeds the value. [08:45] Anyways, I disagree with you that 'there's no such thing as security against attackers *with* physical access' [08:45] I understand your logic in disagreeing. [08:46] It is the same concept as what you said jblack. making it hard enough that they would not want to do it [08:47] And in return, I'll agree that there's no such thing as absolute safety. ;) [08:47] jblack: Splendid. I do believe we are on the same page. [08:48] tarelrulz: But, of course, putting a password on the BIOS is not likely to achieve that threshold. [08:48] well, not for you [08:49] tarelerulz: it's not THAT hard to find some bios password proggie.. or even remove the hard drive from computer.. [08:49] what is one thing you think that is keep Linux back from becoming more popular with the masses ? [08:50] tarelerulz: Momemtum. [08:50] m$ is so popular, it's being sold with nearly every pc [08:50] What do you mean swuboo? [08:51] ttkeppi: Password proggie seems unnecessary, unless the BIOS backs the password up onto the flash memory. Do they do that, nowadays? [08:51] tarelerulz: killerappz? [08:51] That is what I think gregory [08:51] There is couple thing I wish I had for it [08:51] tarelerulz: The vast majority of people who use computers at all use Windows. They don't want, or see a need, for change. [08:51] very true [08:51] Yeah. Bios passwords are a joke. Hard drive passwords barely less so. [08:52] swuboo: don't know that, but I doubt they don't [08:52] I would love to see good im client with alot of cool features [08:52] ttkeppi: No motherboard I've ever worked with has done that, but I'd be perfectly willing to believe the latest generation does that. [08:52] Like I have all ways said text is not very cool. [08:53] I have found about eveny thing else I wanted as far as killerappz. [08:53] swuboo: but bios password protection doesn't protect the hdd, when it's removed, or does it? [08:54] ttkeppi: BIOS password protection doesn't protect the BIOS when the battery is removed. [08:54] swuboo: lol [08:55] it was more simple that i thought, again [08:55] I don't knock stuff like Pidgin ,but if I could get a client for a big network that supported all it features. Share files , voice , web . I would be set . some network like yahoo where I could interact with the windows uses as same and they do with one other [08:55] XMPP? [08:55] With pidgin. [08:56] You can run your own server. [08:56] Unless that's not what you mean by "big network" [08:56] Anyway, I'm going to bed now. [08:56] ok I'm having major instability problems with nvidia-glx-new nvidia driver, would the nvidia-glx driver completely cripple me with a 7900 GS? [08:56] What can xmpp have for features [08:57] Perhaps wikipedia can help; I don't personally know. [08:57] Fritzel: Doubt it. I've only got a 6800, and the plain old 'nvidia' driver handles everything compiz throws at it. [08:57] I've also heard that "kopete" can do some video and voice. [08:57] ok that's all I wanted to know thank you swuboo [08:58] guess I just have not found the right network [08:58] I have looked a lot [08:58] swuboo: Might be slower though. [08:58] But you shouldn't notice it outside games. [08:58] tarelerulz, I think your best bet is Skype, if I understand your situation correctly [08:59] orvokki: Indeed. And I don't think there are that many games he's likely to be playing in Ubuntu that require the full fury of a 7900. [08:59] I understood skype to be from one person to one person [08:59] swuboo: Heh, how about Windows games through Wine? :) [08:59] Skype + PulseAudio == pain. [09:00] Wine == stuck keys. [09:00] And no surround. [09:00] PulseAudio == pain [09:00] orvokki: True, true. Well, only one way for him to find out, I guess. [09:00] That is great if you know some one who has it and just want to talk to them. [09:00] PulseAudio is cool if you have multiple devices and plan to use them at the same time. [09:00] DanaG: So 99/100 desktop users probably would be happier without it. [09:00] It just needs a better UI. [09:00] orvokki: Last Windows game I played heavily through wine was WoW---it crashed every time someone within about five hundred yards of my character cast Mind Flay. I was a shadow priest. [09:00] True, it makes no sense for most people, I think. [09:01] swuboo: How long ago was this? [09:01] orvokki: Long enough ago that I played WoW. [09:01] Months, or years? [09:01] DanaG: Imo makes no sense for it to have been integrated to ubuntu-desktop. Then again, I said the same thing before Hardy about Compiz. [09:01] and did you run it with -opengl? [09:01] A few of each, DanaG. [09:01] Yes. [09:01] It may work better withouit. [09:01] without. [09:02] swuboo: Months is a huge gap in Wine development. Years is something inconceivable. [09:02] It did on my nvidia when I tried it (with a friend's server emulator) [09:02] Since I would sooner chew on rusty spoons and then gnaw my own hands off than play WoW again, it's largely a moot point. [09:02] ;> [09:03] Wine + Pulse == nope, doesn't work. [09:03] Yet anyway. [09:03] How can you try to (subliminally) get other people you know to stop spending so much time with WoW? [09:03] Some Wine devs have thought it might be useful to get to work. [09:03] DanaG: Wine in OSS output + padsp + Pulse == Works. At least for me. [09:03] swuboo: ALSA has been the recommended audio output in Wine since I think 0.9.50. [09:04] orvokki: Sure, but that doesn't work with Pulse. [09:04] I seem to remember wine OSS not working with padsp very well, either. [09:04] orvokki: If you're playing a fullscreen game, it probably doesn't matter---just kill pulse and use ALSA in Wine. [09:04] Also Wine OSS development has mostly halted. [09:05] Hmm. Does that work for all programs, btw? [09:05] But I WANT to run it through pulse, if possible. [09:05] That is, that I'd kill PulseAudio and run programs through ALSA: [09:05] Oh, and it doesn't do surround even on my audigy's bare hardware device. [09:05] s/:/./ [09:05] DanaG: Also at least on my Audigy 2 PulseAudio can do 16bit sound whereas ALSA can do 24bit. [09:05] orvokki: Sure, why not? You don't HAVE to use Pulse. [09:06] On my Audigy2, I can't get 24-bit. [09:06] swuboo: I wasn't sure how exactly it worked. [09:06] At least, not on surround51. [09:06] Can I prevent it from starting at all? [09:06] orvokki: If you kill Pulse and go back to ALSA, it'll work like it did in Gutsy and earlier, really. [09:06] orvokki: You could uninstall the package, I guess. [09:06] Hmm. [09:06] I believe going back to Alsa is not entirely possible, from what I've seen here. :P [09:07] But you can probably ignore me. ;) [09:07] Lunks: I doubt it's impossible; it might take some tweaks to asound.conf and a few switch up libraries, but I think everything you need is still in the official repositories. [09:07] swuboo: I'd prefer to just disable the automatic startup, that way I can keep ubuntu-desktop meta package. [09:07] any of you try empathy with voice chat with gtalk ? [09:08] orvokki: Mm, valid. [09:08] Audigy2 24-bit? Not the cardbus one. [09:09] It refuses type S24_LE and FLOAT (32) _LE [09:09] Still, I'm not unhappy with Pulseaudio. [09:09] I like Pulse. [09:09] DanaG: Well, it's not Audigy 2 plain, I just don't remember the ending. [09:09] Now that I've spent hours reading wikis and forums to figure out how to get it to support legacy programs like oolite. [09:09] "ZS" [09:09] anyone have problems with the window title bar getting corrupted in compiz? [09:09] Might have been. [09:10] * DanaG thinks "CA0109-1AG" is likely not a real Audigy2. [09:10] Real Audigy2 is CA10K-somethin. [09:10] g. [09:10] Somewhere, I've got an Audigy. Just a plain old Audigy. No 2, no endings. Came with Deus Ex! [09:10] If I had a huge amount of money and a time machine, I'd do a couple of things: [09:10] Pay 3dfx not to sell out to nvidia; [09:10] In my mind, this usually gets rearranged to, "My copy of Deus Ex came with a sound card or something." [09:11] Pay Aureal not to sell out to Creative. [09:11] I've still got Soundblaster AWE32 somewhere. I remember it had awesome support in Linux. :) [09:11] Nowadays, Creative is scum, in my opinion. [09:11] DanaG: Why not buy both yourself? [09:11] I'm an engineer, not a businessman. [09:12] Creative: Deliberately removing existing, ADVERTI{Z,S}ED features from drivers, to make people buy new hardware. [09:12] And then lying about it. [09:12] They wouldn't be able to do that [09:12] with all the source out in the open [09:12] what they did is /exactly/ why we need the gpl [09:13] That's another thing I'd do: make sure GPL was around then. [09:13] There are better things to do with money and time machines. For example, bribing famous historic figures to grow ridiculous mustaches, hopefully affecting the history of facial hair fashions. Afterwards, I'd come back to the present and just spend the rest of my life happily snickering at everyone. [09:13] If it's not, make it. [09:13] Then figure out a way to let Aureal open-source stuff -- if they were going to die anyway, that'd be better. [09:14] buy all the IP, take the full hit [09:14] Yeah. Then bring it with me to present times. [09:14] Yarr, it bugs me how I can't tell what memory firefox is using for what [09:15] it's not OS cache, but it's application cache.. I wish I could see what was used for code, and what was used for caching web pages and the like.... [09:15] Anyway, bedtime now for real. [09:15] Night. [09:15] DanaG: 'night [09:15] Thu Apr 17 01:15:56 PDT 2008 [09:16] One week 'till Hardy [09:16] I hope the PS3 port folks have their issues figured out by then [09:16] if the ps3 release came at the same time as the ppc and x86 releases, that would rock [09:17] I have a friend whose whole family uses macs [09:17] the PS3 is how Ubuntu will get into their house first. [09:18] ethana2: I set one of my technophobic housemates up with Ubuntu a few years ago; worked perfectly for him. One of his other nerd friends came over, decided Linux was too advanced for him, and put 98SE back. I was quite aggravated. [09:18] Windows and OSX won't touch Ubuntu on the PS3. [09:18] ever. [09:18] swuboo: perhaps someone should ask *him* too :) [09:19] topyli: Heh, I live with the man, it's not like I snuck into his room and replaced his OS. [09:20] topyli: The other guy, though; "Okay, I replaced the broken printer. While I was in there, I put Windows back. Linux is too complicated for you." [09:20] topyli: imho ubuntu is much more easy to learn at basic level to use than windblows products.. [09:20] swuboo: i know, it's just the way you said the above. you think it "worked perfectly for him", while this friend decided it's "too advanced for him" :) [09:21] topyli: Ah, makes sense. No, I based my assessment on his stated estimations. [09:21] anyone have problems with the window title bar getting corrupted in compiz? If so, there's now an easy workaround. w00t! [09:21] I'm going to start my grandma on Ubuntu [09:22] She avoids computers like the plague now [09:22] ttkeppi: i know. i got a laptop from work around the time dapper was in beta and installed. i didn't need the machine so i gave it to my wife [09:22] with windows, i don't blame her at all [09:22] ttkeppi: i said "unfortunately no windows on this machine". she looked around the menus and said ok, this is fine [09:22] ttkeppi: still happy with it [09:22] I moved my whole family from windows to Ubuntu Hardy [09:23] 3 machines, two seats [09:23] topyli: The precise sequence of events was, my housemate's 98 install gets fubared. He doesn't have a Windows CD anymore. I offer to replace it with Ubuntu, he agrees. I set up all his odd legacy apps in wine, everything works. He proclaims the results satisfactory. [09:23] so far I have converted 4 lost souls to ubuntu.. no complains yet. and two more lost souls coming when hardy's final is out [09:23] they got used to it [09:23] the problem when dapper was still in beta was she asked me why there are so many updates each morning [09:23] so i told him it would get better once the system is actually released [09:23] "you gave me a system that doesn't even exist?" [09:23] Grassroots FTW [09:24] swuboo: iirc win98se lasts about six months without reinstalling. you'll but ubuntu back then :) [09:25] topyli: No... that was about a year and a half ago. While that 98SE install crufts, and crufts, and crufts. [09:25] oh the reinstall is way overdue [09:26] topyli: Until and unless it actually just plain gives out---not gonna happen. [09:26] soon he'll be like "i need a new machine, this is slow" all over again [09:26] topyli: No, no I don't think so. [09:27] topyli: His last 98SE install lasted him around four years. And he didn't say, "this is slow, I need a new one." He said, "The screen stays black and it beeps like crazy." [09:28] heh. a good time to do something [09:28] That's what I figured. [09:28] swuboo: four years win98se working??? that has got to be somekind of a record [09:28] ttkeppi: Working is a relative term. [09:29] once a year is a good phase to reinstall, even winxp [09:29] ttkeppi: My first year of university, my XP box got to an uptime of 188 days. [09:30] ttkeppi: Achieved, of course, at the cost of never, ever patching anything for any reason. [09:30] swuboo: that is quite awesome record.. I think I've had something around 2weeks [09:30] swuboo: Hmm, sounds like a nice trojan experiment. [09:30] vista helps a lot. i have two windows users waiting for the hardy release. the one with vista is completely fed up and keeps asking "is your new linux thing out yet?" while the one with win2k is just "interested in trying" [09:31] Btw, my bro had his Windows 2000 running for several years non-stop. [09:31] meh, win2k works great [09:31] topyli: indeed, vista is a gods sent for lost souls [09:31] topyli: I didn't realize how bad Vista was until one of my friends needed to print out his W2. [09:31] He didn't have a printer, so he wanted to email it to me---Vista wouldn't let him save it. [09:32] heh [09:32] Point blank refused: "This PDF contains sensitive or copyrighted material, and will not be saved to the hard drive." [09:32] psshh, copyright [09:32] I honor it but I despise and avoid it [09:32] So he had to give me his SSN, DOB, and Mother's Maiden Name. Security so good, it's counterproductive. [09:33] Hahaha this is awesome [09:33] all the Vista users waiting anxiously for the final release of Hardy [09:34] orvokki: As for trojan experiments, back in the old days when KaZaA and Morpheus were de rigeur, I used to play a game where I'd try to download and run as many trojans as I could in twenty minutes. [09:34] orvokki: The secret was to use popular but contradictory search criteria: "Warcraft 3 Nude!" "Britney Spears No-CD Crack!" [09:34] well m$ has kind of admitted that vista has been fubar just like winme, since the new win7 could be out next year.. [09:37] hello [09:37] hello, zappy [09:37] when ubuntu will be released? [09:38] <_ruben> ubuntu has been released years ago [09:38] uhm? [09:38] no...the new release...8.04 [09:39] 24th [09:39] on this month? [09:39] yes.. hence the name, 8.04 [09:40] wow...ok...can u suggest me some valid site where can i see some screenshots? [09:40] www.ubuntu.com [09:41] ok let's check it out [09:41] ty a lots [09:41] np [09:44] ...how much trouble can it be to use google? [09:44] http://i27.tinypic.com/51pzib.png [09:44] oh he's gone [09:44] was going to scare him with mine [09:45] "but it has no user interface at all!" [09:45] topyli: lol [09:45] topyli: what on earth happened there :D [09:45] topyli: Hey, there's a heron in that picture! [09:45] it moved [09:46] ttkeppi: i've removed the unnecessary stuff over the years :) [09:46] last time it was over towards the right [09:46] topyli: I didn't even really look at the wallpaper before I put my old one back. I assumed it was some sort of flaming vase or something. [09:46] topyli: I see :) [09:47] ethana2: now that you mention it, it might indeed have moved a bit towards the center [09:47] and the circles coming out from it [09:47] kinda cool, I guess [09:48] ethana2: It doesn't really seem particularly *hardy*, though. More like disintegrating. [09:48] hardiness is in the inside! :) [09:49] what is the name of gnome's window decorater [09:49] Fritzel: Metacity? [09:49] Fritzel: metacity. ubuntu replaces it with compiz when your machine can run it [09:49] yes compiz is refusing to show decorations [09:49] the compiz /decorator/ is emerald, is it not? [09:49] well it's a bit more than a decorator though :) [09:49] yes I'm trying to get away from emerald if I can [09:50] I just use the regular decorator with compiz [09:50] ...I think [09:50] ethana2: sometimes. on ubuntu it's gtk-window-decorator by default, which reuses metacity decorations [09:50] topyli: that's probably it, yeah [09:50] ahh yep metacity is what I was looking for, this system is soo screwed up [09:50] emerald is rather pointless IMO [09:51] Fritzel: Compiz won't work with Metacity; but if you don't want emerald, it will work with gtk-window-decorator. [09:51] or so it says [09:51] gtk-window-decorator started, I still don't have decorations [09:51] Fritzel: Ah. That sounds familiar. [09:52] well if emerald is my only option, I suppose I can go that way [09:52] Fritzel: Hold on a sec. [09:52] alright [09:52] You're using an nvidia card, right? [09:52] sometimes i just pull a killall on emerald... [09:52] 7900GS, isn't it? [09:53] oh so you know I'm running the 96.xx driver (I'm trying to battle stability problems [09:53] yes [09:53] correct [09:53] Try adding, if you haven't already, "Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"" to the Screen section of xorg.conf [09:53] alright [09:53] Then restart X. If that doesn't fix it, then go for emerald. [09:53] everything except the first and last quote correct? [09:54] Yes. The format will become clear inside the file; they're all formatted in a similar way. [09:54] -nod- I'm familiar with it, I just want to be certain, bad habit of mine, always confirming [09:54] alright brb [09:54] Yup. Good luck. [09:56] swuboo: ok yeah that did it, sorry for the newbie question I appreciate the help though ^^ [09:56] now, hopefully, X is stable now that I'm on this driver [09:56] Fritzel: I'm pretty much a newbie too. I can usually only be of much help with problems I've had myself. [09:56] ...that being one of them. [09:56] -nod- well it's appreciated [09:57] Glad to have been of help. [09:57] any idea, what would work with via p4m900 integrated? that's via chrome9 ...openchrome drivers didn't do the trick.. and no restricted drivers seem to be available [09:58] I really really hope nvidia fixes that smp bug >< [09:58] hey all again [09:59] Is there a way to resize to loading slash screen during bootup? [10:00] ok one more quick question and I'm gone, for some reason realplayer does not have images on it's buttons [10:01] mysticdarkhack: you enabled the framebuffer and the usplash is tiny? i'm in the same boat [10:01] mysticdarkhack: StartUp-Manager [10:01] does anyone have any clue what that's about? [10:01] Fritzel: I do not, I'm afraid. [10:01] real player is still around? [10:02] how if I may ask? [10:02] mysticdarkhack: no idea [10:02] just sayin' :) [10:04] where is startup-manager and it isn't install? [10:04] mysticdarkhack: Synaptic, and it's not installed by default. [10:05] i see [10:06] are you sure that the startup-manager will solve the big bootup load screen? [10:06] mysticdarkhack: you can change the boot image and the splash screen with it.. also the resolution of the image [10:06] mysticdarkhack: don't know if it will solve it, but it's a good try [10:11] tnanks and I'll give it a try [10:11] happy to help [10:14] hmm startup-manager never asked for a password. i don't think it actually did any changes [10:15] if it did, i'm worried :) [10:15] it asked from me.. it might be that your sudo login hasn't been expired, and that was the reason it didnt ask for pw [10:16] ttkeppi: oh of course, since i just used synaptic a few seconds before that :) [10:16] usplash.conf does have my preferred resolution now. thanks for the tip :) [10:17] happy to help :) [10:18] jockey tool in kubuntu is still break [10:40] hi when I try to install 'kjscmd' under kubuntu+1, quite a few packages are being marked for removal. can someone confirm this pleaser [10:40] kubuntu hardy that is [10:40] :P [10:40] anybody home? [10:41] darx: Did you look at it under aptitude? [10:41] yup [10:41] It has no conflicts. [10:42] what should i do to check that? [10:43] start up aptitude, find kjscmd, and press d [10:45] It's possible that kjscmd depends upon a version of a library that is older or newer than what other software you have needs, leaving you with an either/or type situation [10:45] hmm [10:49] I can't find it under aptitude, there are too many. [10:49] is there a command line version of the same check? [10:49] it may just be that the archive is inconsistent at the moment because something else hasn't built yet [10:50] darx: What sort of packages are being removed? [10:51] http://pastebin.com/d81d527d [10:52] thats via aptitude. but when I try via the add-remove utility, many more are being marked for removal. I'm on kubuntu kde 3.5.9 [10:53] if i download hardy beta now, will it have the bugfixes in it that has come out in the last month or so? [10:54] darx: That package is a KDE4 package, so its going to depend on KDE4 libs, which I believe is what is causing your issues [10:54] ttkeppi, yes [10:54] it also says that kde4libs-bin is broken [10:54] is it safe to allow aptitude to continue? [10:54] Lamego: splendid, thnx [10:54] Flanne: ^^ [10:55] darx: Er, maybe not. But, thats what it appears to be doing. I'd ask in #kubuntu(-kde4?), but as for command line 'checking', apt-cache policy [package] will show candidates (different versions), and apt-cache show [package] and apt-cache showpkg [package] [10:56] anyone? [10:56] !anyone [10:56] A large amount of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? [10:56] darx: I'd ask the kubuntu people. Assuming youve gotten this way through normal repository usage, this is somewhat bug-related, and they may know about it (and have a fix) or at least, need to know about it. I'm not familiar enough with the KDE 3 vs 4 thing right now to be able to say for sure what your best course of action is. [10:57] i just upgrade my kernel to 2.6.24-16-generic.. and just config my b43.. so far it can connect to AP, but the problem is.. i have rubbish interface such as "wmaster0" and my wlan0 rate == 1MB [10:57] how can i solve this quest? [10:58] GunbladeIV: by adding some useful info about your wireless card [10:59] unless you're talking about the b43 driver? [10:59] savvas: such as? i'm using bcm4318(b43) driver. and so far no problem in connecting with WEP AP .. but i got weird interface when i do "ifconfig" ---> wmaster0 appear in the middle of nowhere [10:59] savvas: yup [11:01] savvas: i'm talking about b43 driver [11:01] GunbladeIV: ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko [11:02] -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 139696 2008-04-11 00:52 /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko [11:02] have you tried reporting a bug? [11:02] nope [11:03] let me paste the output for iwconfig and ifconfig [11:03] can i? [11:03] sure, www.pastebin.ca :) [11:03] savvas: now i see.. [11:04] savvas: somehow. iwconfig did tell me that my rate is 48MB.. but nm-applet tell 1MB [11:04] so i think the problem is with nm-applet [11:04] dont bother about that issue.. now proceed to wmaster0 interface [11:05] anyone know wht time hardy rc hits the servers??? [11:05] wesmo: yeah, tomorrow from 00-24h :P [11:06] savvas: http://pastebin.com/m6a2daab1 [11:06] it says on the hardy release sched its meant to be the start of the day UTC time [11:08] GunbladeIV: does it make any problems if it has wmaster0? [11:14] ikonia, you there? === fred_2 is now known as hanfred === hanfred is now known as fred_2 [11:16] out of interest... did the plans for a new theme in hardy peter out, or are we still expecting some changes? [11:16] ccooke: There is a new theme. [11:17] swuboo: really? when will we see it? [11:17] ccooke, murrine is the new theme. but i think they're still trying for a new one. [11:17] you can see it in beta [11:17] ccooke: It's, um... Ubuntu. Frankly, it didn't seem all that different to me. [11:17] or, aptitude install murrine-human [11:17] hardware info doesn't excist anymore in hardy? [11:18] the program hardware info isn't there anymore [11:18] wilbert, no, not for me either. [11:19] ah [11:19] there were supposed to be plans for a load of changes. [11:19] This appears to be... well... new wallpaper and a new login background. Both of which are nice, mind. Just dissapointing. [11:19] yeah ccooke, but the ubuntu-art team have no direction and eventually made the excuse that it takes longer than 6 months to make a solid theme for an LTS distro [11:19] ccooke: I wouldn't know. Bear in mind that there's a new version of GNOME, which implies a number of differences by itself. [11:20] so they just rejigged Murrine a little bit for this one. [11:20] Keithamus: do u or do u not have the program hardware info [11:20] wilbert, i don't [11:20] wilbert: He does not. [11:20] aah, then we dont have it :) lol [11:20] yeah :D [11:21] swuboo: yes, but we get that 'for free' [11:21] pitty doh [11:21] swuboo: I mean... time passes, new Gnome. :-) [11:22] ccooke, afaik ibex is going to have a new theme, which they'll have a year to make ready for LTS. [11:22] ccooke: One could say the same things about new versions of the Human theme. [11:22] It's like clockwork: Every six months, a slightly new shade of burnt umber. [11:22] lol [11:22] I guess... The problem is that Ubuntu is getting into the habit of promising wonderful things and then delivering merely impressive stuff :-) [11:22] be thankful ubuntu has the best wallpaper of all operating systems! [11:23] black [11:23] swuboo: yeah. but *this* time, they promised something different... and failed to deliver. [11:23] Keithamus: Yes, no other OS has a wallpaper that says, "The distribution's mascot is on fire! Quick, put it out!" quite like Hardy's. [11:23] LOL [11:24] i have a lovely she in my background [11:24] there is one sans the bird. [11:24] (like the whole "3d desktop!" thing was a year late (and through no fault of Ubuntu - what with the compiz/beryl merger and the general instability...) [11:24] ccooke: I suppose that's true; I never really pay attention to anything but the packages, myself. I like to turn my GUI slate grey with blues and whites. [11:25] i hope they fix my resolution problem for the login screen: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/human-theme/+bug/150938 [11:25] Launchpad bug 150938 in human-theme "Screen resolution problems at login screen" [Undecided,Confirmed] [11:25] its a bit annoying that kde4 comes out, with a beautiful new theme, and GNOME/Ubuntu say "the smaller updates is where it counts" [11:25] ccooke, i come from the dark side of the os, named windows, i find ubuntu still 1000% in any way then win [11:27] i dont even have windows anymore [11:27] I do. Wine just doesn't cut it sometimes. [11:28] i cant imagine where i need windows for [11:28] wilbert: yeah, I'm not exactly complaining - just explaining why I'm dissapointed [11:28] (and dissapointment is inevitable when Thing1 is promised, but Thing0.5 is delivered :- [11:28] ) [11:28] Need it? Nothing; I can't think of a single thing other than gaming that isn't far and away better in Ubuntu. [11:28] hear hear [11:29] photoshop [11:29] we have gimp [11:29] no [11:29] Any fixes to the scrolling bug in Ubuntu+1? described here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=708928&page=2 [11:29] sorry, doesn't cut it nearly as close. [11:29] Keithamus: google just gave wine several million dollars to WINE have photosho work under it [11:29] Keithamus: Photoshop just isn't something that matters to me. [11:29] for me it does [11:29] the scrolling bug renders ubuntu+1 useless to me for now [11:30] chow time here guy's [11:30] nonewmsgs, i know, and cs2 works ok through it. [11:30] but illustrator, indesign, flash, etc, work like crap. [11:30] hmm [11:30] scribus, inkscape are all good, but do not compare unfortunatley [11:31] Keithamus: It's hard to argue with the LaTeX support, though. [11:31] Come to think of it, should I submit a bug report of that? I mean, there is certainly *precedent* for submitting 'social' bug reports [11:31] from a programmers perspective. [11:31] Ciantic: Looks like that bug has a well described fix? [11:31] jblack, indeed, but it is so serious it should appear to ubuntu repository itself [11:33] Keithamus: Still, other than games, nothing that I personally require or want works better in Windows. [11:33] yeah [11:33] for the average user ubuntu > windows. [11:34] for designers/gamers unfortunatley its a mixed bag [11:34] Ciantic: Well, I can't quite see things your way.... I suppose though that you can submit a patch to the package which will resolve the problem. [11:35] Keithamus: Works wonderfully for academic work in the humanities; I can't even imagine what a nightmare trying to maintain a texlive install in Windows would be like. [11:35] i converted my designer and gamer friend and he love ubuntu and just dual boots [11:35] jblack, you don't see it? This can't be "not seen" it freaking almost kills the whole browser when more than a few checkboxes appear on screen [11:36] does anyone have any luck with realtek gigabit ethernet hardwares? [11:36] Keithamus: Um... I think my onboard NIC might be realtek, if that helps you. [11:36] It can be demonstrated easily with resizing browsers o that they disappear, and soon as they appear again the browser is in hal [11:36] No, I can't, for two reasons. Firstly, it doesn't affect me. Secondly, there's an easy workaround. [11:36] *halt [11:36] does it work swuboo? [11:36] Keithamus: If you can read this sentence, I would imagine so. [11:36] jblack, do you even have a page where is checkboxes enough to try scrolling? [11:37] how many? [11:37] about one per row [11:37] let me make a example html page [11:38] Keithamus: Nope, checking the mobo specs, only the sound is Realtek, I'm afraid. Sorry. [11:38] Let me get this right.... [11:38] i am having no end of problems with a realtek R8111C lan chipset [11:38] honestly, wireless would work better! [11:38] A bug that affects some web pages, on some browsers, on some computers... that's a life and death situation. [11:38] Clantic, jblack: I've found that scrolling up in gnome-system-monitor is kind of fubared for me. [11:39] As contrasted to.... Say the fact that any Xen system that upgrades from gutsy to hardy is going to find itself without networking. [11:39] jblack, this bug is specific enough, those people commenting on thread are *offtopic* [11:39] Clantic: If you give me a webpage to load that demonstrates your bug, I'll tell you how it looks. [11:40] If I'm wrong about the importance of it, then I encourage you to submit a patch against the package. =) [11:40] yes yes, I'm working on the demonstration page [11:40] Ciantic: If the problem is pervasive enough that you're this worried about it, surely you can name an existing page offhand? [11:41] * jblack thinks its telling that you have to make a demostration page, rather than point at a real world example [11:41] swuboo, Gmail inbox view [11:41] it is unusable when tried to scroll [11:41] that display manager is horrible....it doesnt have my moniter and although i can change the resolution the horizontal/vertical refresh rates are atrocious. is there any way to change them manually there or do i have to use xorg.conf [11:41] Ciantic: Gmail displays completely normally for me. [11:41] they fixed the "cracked" titlebar issue :) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/99508/comments/114 [11:41] Launchpad bug 99508 in compiz "Window titlebar displayed not right with compiz enabled" [Medium,Confirmed] [11:43] I've found so far that all my problems (and they were pretty severe) with FF3b5 in Hardy were solved by ditching ~/.mozilla [11:45] His fix is adding a single line to xorg.conf, for xaa. [11:45] which implies to me that it's compiz related. [11:46] Ciantic: Where's that page you promised? [11:46] also my nvidia ethernet wired conection seems offline [11:47] jblack, I'm trying to reproduce it, naive list of checkboxes didn't do, but it is checkbox related for sure [11:47] uh-huh [11:47] since resizing gmail window the way that checkboxes disappear works normally [11:48] Wait... [11:49] So... a specific desktop setup, a specific browser, and a specific page? [11:49] So you have a problem with .000005% of the internet, and it's "so serious" ? [11:49] Did you even try another browser? [11:49] jblack, I don't think so, I bet it affects *all* checkboxes at some level [11:49] ive a problem: i updated firefox... no there come ever in the notification area "Firefox-3.0 restart required [11:49] Firefox-3.0 has been upgraded (or reinstalled) and must be restarted. Please quit and restart your web browser now. [11:49] " so i restarted firefox, nothing happend, even if i restart the pc nothihng happend, what to do? [11:49] Can someone help me figure out how to fix this please: http://pastebin.com/m3c80fe4e [11:50] jblack, I tried it on windows [11:50] it says after that "No rule to make target /src/MakeFile. Stop" then lots of "Error 2" [11:51] Keithamus: Run it like this:. "sudo bash" then "make clean; make modules; make install" [11:51] some more errors. [11:52] Keithamus: By the way, are you aware of module-assistant? [11:52] no [11:52] I don't know where you got that module from, but if it's from the repo, then look at module-assistant. Makes life easy [11:53] its not from the repo, its from this forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=725522 [11:53] but the problem is, I can't connect to the internet on the PC which Im compiling it on [11:53] ndis? [11:53] should it need it, its just a lan driver? [11:54] im trying to do the instructions on post#2 btw. [11:54] since when do realtek drivers need ndis? I guess the page I got on was something that automatically exists for every new Ubuntu species [16:43] just wondering: if I install Hardy's daily build from today, and do updates tomorrow, do I have release candidate tomorrow ? Or should I wait till tomorrow for some obscure reason ? [16:44] that illudes me (just finishing the sentence) [16:44] rc is out today is it not, or has it been delayed [16:44] tatters: been delayed to tomorrow [16:45] k, thnx [16:45] release week is here; think I'll hide in #ubuntu-classroom [16:45] Leeuw: any updates you run will bring you current to either the RC or final release when they're out [16:46] Leeuw: i'd suggest putting that in the /topic, but people don't seem to read it [16:46] jbroome: thanx, I'll go ahead then, can't wait, have the image, and probably tomorrow servers are to busy anyway [16:46] impatient li' l me :-! [16:46] yeah, get your updates before any milestones are released [16:48] one thing I don't understand though: considering freeze went in last week, how can there be difference between daily' s now and rc ? [16:48] no deepfreeze ? [16:48] Leeuw: not everything is frozen and some things are allowed to pass when it's critical although they should be frozen [16:48] just cubes in water ? :-P [16:48] scapor: aha ! [16:49] Leeuw: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule [16:49] Leeuw: you dont read ubuntu newsweekly? heresy! [16:49] Leeuw: like the RC is the freeze for translations [16:49] scapor: yeah I know, thx anyway; that's where I got the info, it didn't xplain this though [16:49] Leeuw: they can go on till then as they can't make big bugs normally [16:50] scapor: eeehhh ? [16:50] Leeuw: you see different freeze's on that page :p [16:50] whats the lastest version of ubuntu? 1. does it have latex on it? 2. does it support the nvidia 8800gts (G92) out of the box? [16:50] Leeuw: changing a translation won't make the system crash as there's no code involved [16:50] scapor: I gettit [16:50] scapor: good ifo, tnx [16:51] info [16:51] mohbana: get the livecd and see [16:51] !latex | mohbana [16:51] mohbana: tex is a language for describing a document, commonly used especially for scientific publishing. Information and instructions for installing TeX and other related packages can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LaTeX [16:51] !info latex [16:51] I've looked at the forums... no one has the same issue as me [16:51] Package latex does not exist in hardy [16:51] texlive maybe [16:52] !info texlive [16:52] texlive (source: texlive-base): TeX Live: A decent selection of the TeX Live packages. In component main, is optional. Version 2007-13 (hardy), package size 17 kB, installed size 100 kB [16:52] apt-cache search latex on my hardy machine brings up many choices [16:52] * Tommmmmmm thinks wubi is a waste of time -_- [16:52] jbroome: texlive is the 'official' debian tex package (it used to be tetex) [16:53] mohbana: i have two 8600 GTs in my hardy machine, they work fine === hydrogen is now known as Negrodyh [16:54] wubi is sweet [16:54] jbroome, did you have you manually install it? [16:54] as is unetbootin [16:54] After I do sudo rmmod b43 it says: "Segmentation Fault" [16:55] my mouse keeps getting sucked to the center of my screen when i min/max windows and give them focus. just started randomly, is this compiz, xorg, vodoo? [16:55] mohbana: i used envy to install the drivers, but the restricted drivers notice did see them [16:55] hrm just disabled compiz and it stopped... [16:56] Hmmmm, Shall I install Ubuntu or Kubuntu.....// [16:58] Tommmmmmm: do you like KDE? [16:58] Tommmmmmm, it depends on your taste, nothing we can advice about :P [16:58] After I do sudo rmmod b43 it says: "Segmentation Fault" [16:58] cough kde4 cough [16:58] Tommmmmmm: how about noobuntu ? [16:58] is that normal? [16:59] sorry... [16:59] At what time is the Release candidate coming? According to schedule it should be available today? [16:59] Segmentation fault just means the hardware isn't compatitable i thinks [16:59] lup0: tomorrow [17:00] Lamego well said, it is a matter of taste rather than of one being better than the other. [17:00] seems like /topic needs an update ;] [17:00] michaelfavia: it's a function that centers mouse on most likely spot next to click (like ok-button), don't ask me where to find it though (probably advanced desktop settings) [17:00] Tommmmmmm: I basically recompiled the b43 module and moved it to /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/ and tried reloading it [17:00] lup0: nope, delayed; tomorrow [17:00] Ndiswrapper GUI app is for Gnome Isn't it ? [17:01] Leeuw, it isnt on dialogs, on any window :( [17:01] ndisgtk aye [17:01] after I do the sudo rmmod b43 it says that [17:01] craaazy [17:01] Ndisgtk working on KDE? [17:01] Tommmmmmm: yes [17:01] michaelfavia: did you install advanced desktop settings from synaptic ? if not do so [17:01] never tried it--intel wireless ;] [17:02] Leeuw, i did. [17:02] Leeuw: ok, thanks [17:02] but cant find any thing that would do this :( [17:03] michaelfavia: hmmm... then I give up, am on debian now for I crashed gutsy and waaiting for hardy... so I cab't find out just now... [17:03] can't I mean [17:03] is there any clients that support MSN Messenger webcams/ [17:03] Amsn [17:03] okay thanks [17:04] Amsn has the slowest contact list ever and the looks aint great either. [17:04] Well. I jsut want webcam support [17:05] I preffer Pidgin myself... buuuuuut doesn't have webcam [17:05] Yeah, I have to use it for webcam...I way perfer Emesene for msn :) [17:07] Does amsn also have sound support ? [17:08] * Offline Messaging [17:08] * Voice Clips [17:08] * Display pictures [17:08] * Custom emoticons [17:08] * Multi-language support (around 40 languages currently supported) [17:08] * Webcam support [17:08] * Sign in to more than one account at once [17:08] * Full-speed File transfers [17:08] * Group support [17:08] * Normal, and animated emoticons with sounds [17:08] * Chat logs [17:08] * Timestamping [17:08] * Event alarms [17:08] * Conferencing support [17:08] Tommmmmmm: ass [17:08] * Tabbed chat windows [17:08] It has most things. [17:08] does it have a pastebin? [17:08] Tommmmmmm: Please don't paste here. [17:09] interesting. I didn't know there was a linux client that supported MSN video [17:09] kk [17:09] I always just told everyone to use skype or H.323 [17:09] useful info [17:09] Well just wondering if amsn allows for sound, cause skype does ! === Negrodyh is now known as Idrogeno [17:10] bicyclist: you know, there's apparently a completely web-based one I've been meaning to try out. [17:10] and by "web based" I mean flash :( [17:10] ah ok. [17:11] tesco cd's = the sex [17:15] Is there SVN integration to the file manager? [17:15] nemo: you also emesene [17:16] *also have [17:16] hello [17:17] i've upgraded my laptop to hardy, and averything seems about as i'd expect [17:17] savvas: no [17:17] except synergy doesn't work well [17:18] I installed hardy heron beta, now im having problems importing photos from my camera [17:18] it goes back and forth between being resonsive and unresponsive [17:18] nemo: i meant i think emesene supports video too :) [17:18] the first time it imported 2/3 then crashed [17:19] the next 2 times gnome froze entirely [17:19] hello [17:19] i'm not sure why, other than to say that it does not appear to happen in conjuction to anything logged in /var/logs [17:19] now I uninstalled f-spot, since I didnt want it popping up, I get the "do you want to import your photos" dialog, click yes, and nothing happens [17:20] you move the mouse / keyboard on the server, and the synergy client in hardy doesn'tt always respond immediately [17:20] it seems like it gets all events at once every few seconds, then responds normally for a few seconds, then stops responding for a few more [17:21] Hello, I was hoping someone could help me out, I've got some sound issues in Ubuntu hardy [17:21] hello, i just debootstrapped hardy but it wont boot. kernel initializes hw and just when normally init begins its work, nothing happens. any ideas? [17:22] As soon as someone is willing to help me, please tell me, thankyou [17:24] Jorl17: you should know that in hardy, sound is all routed through pulseaudio. [17:25] so apps like amarok have a pulseaudio plugin, but alsa programs need to have a special alsa config file. i don't know if hardy installs one by default [17:29] im using hardy beta 4 (ubuntu) on my laptop -- im planning to install kopete for some testing -- is there an advantage to installing the KDE 4 version (with attendant deps) as opposed to the kde3 version -- im not particularly intersted in eye candy [17:29] Jorl17: whatsa problim ? [17:30] W8TAH: having used both, i'd say the kde3 version is perfactly adequate [17:30] ok [17:30] thanks [17:31] hello [17:31] could you tell me please how can i track xchat's logs with tracker? The files are in a hidden directory in .xchat2/xchatlogs. I added this directory to the watchlist but it doesnt track the files there [17:35] @Leeuw: in the beggining i had difficulties getting my 5.1 sound to work, but I figured it out...comoiled ALSA, did lot's of stuff...switched cables and that was it [17:35] think I found a bug in the error report thingi; it seems it tried to open a page in firefox, but instead of opening a new page, it tried to start a new firefox session, and thus bail [17:35] Can anyone tell me if this syntax is correct? [17:35] sudo cp drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/ [17:35] then, I had this problem of sound getting only 'wowned' by one app, ofc I got it and it is partially ready [17:36] afallenhope [17:36] i think you missed -d command or so [17:36] Jorl17: great ! I didn't know I was soooo good at helping people out... be sure to clean up the ectoplasma though... [17:36] yes Jorl17 ? [17:36] ok, i'm sory, it just happens that openttd gets the sound all breaked [17:37] do you klnow why? [17:37] I can give you information ofc [17:38] $ sudo network-admin ... Segmentation fault (core dumped) <--- Is this normal? [17:38] not that I know of.. but I get segmentation fault all the time [17:39] Well, it's pretty annoying that all gnome apps thinks that my network is down :P [17:39] I get the SF when I run rmmod [17:39] looks like this morning's updates broke compiz. it freezes when switching between overlapping windows [17:39] afallenhope add -r [17:40] just in time for the RC :) [17:40] okay [17:40] nah just leave it [17:40] don't, i'll better just shut up ^^ [17:40] so, does anyone know the reason for the fact my openttd sound breaks as if cpu time wasn't well distributed? [17:41] anybody who have sucsessfully installed aldrin on hardy? [17:41] Jorl17: I'm just trying to patch my driver [17:41] when i mean break I mean goes slow [17:41] i have [17:41] hardy [17:42] insomninja, but why, can I know? [17:42] afakkebhope, have you managed it? [17:43] afallenhope* [17:43] Jorl17, what do you mean? [17:43] Jorl17: what do you mean managed? [17:43] just curiosity, why did you want to know if anyone had sucessfully installed hardy [17:43] the command [17:43] => sudo cp drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/ [17:43] I compiled the driver/module [17:43] oh ok [17:44] Jorl17, because I have problems doing it, it requires some stuff not found in apt [17:44] Jorl17: it doesn't return anything.. [17:44] have checked if it worked? [17:44] insommninja, sutff like what? [17:44] Jorl17: welll... don't I have to do sudo rmmod b43 first? [17:44] https://bugs.launchpad.net/apport/+bug/218751 [17:44] Launchpad bug 218751 in apport "apport tries to start a new firefox session" [Undecided,New] [17:45] I managed to get hardy working even with my usb card, nvidia graphics driver (proprietary) and stuff [17:45] Jorl17: I just had trouble with mine, though the "tutorial" for feisty worked [17:45] maybe, as I said i'd be better off not saying a thing, I am not expert not even close [17:45] Jorl17: welll... don't I have to do sudo rmmod b43 first? [17:45] Jorl17, libzzub, <- I'm trying to install that according to a howto from aldrin's home page, but scons gives me an error I can't really understand [17:46] hm, well, I'm using hardy with triple-boot XP and VIsta through vista's bootloader so I didn't follow that tutorial for sure ^^ [17:47] oh, for all the C++ programmers out there, i've never really used the string command, always used char*, but decided port something out, tell me (if you can), can string cause bufffer overflows? something like string somestring="string"; somestring="somebiggerstring"; ? [17:47] when using apport, is there any way to know that the data has been sent to an dev? [17:48] I might have fixed it, but not in a pretty way... [17:49] anyone? [17:49] Jorl17, C++ strings to do not use fixed length arrays, that type of assignment could not cause an overflow [17:50] ok, thankyou, therefor strcpy command could cause the overflow [17:50] it's just that I've been porting code (really big code) from windows to work on both and started using string...since then I found some strange overflows [17:51] a const string passed as an argument to a function is being acessed...even without that function getting called anywhere [17:52] it seems that apport never sended a bug report in this case [17:55] hey i wanted to ask something . When i installed ubuntu with WUBI it went fine until i did not installed a package . But when i installed a package ( a whole lot of Disk I/O error were printed while booting) [17:55] hello [17:55] hello [17:55] it is no use using an OS where we cant do any thing [17:55] :( [17:56] disk i/o errors are a hardware issue, not the os. [17:57] well in my case it is [17:58] what i think is the cause of error is purely due to Wubi concept is not woeking fine [17:58] as wubi uses virtual disks not real disks so it is a problem of OS not H/W [17:58] hey isnt the Release Candidate supposed to be out today? === sirius is now known as siriusnova [17:59] Not today, tomorrow. Slight delay [17:59] ahh damn [17:59] is there a pre pre release candidate iso? [17:59] Im reinstalling a box lol [17:59] :P [17:59] and how to upgrade from beta to rc? dist-upgrade or what? [17:59] I suppose yes. [17:59] as far as i know just make the usual update.... [17:59] oh nice [17:59] if you already run hh 8.04 [18:00] using dist-upgrade do we loose any definitions, packages, updates, drivers? [18:00] Well some, as not all have been compiled to run with hardy heron. Expecially proprietary drivers. [18:01] Or packages, that have been removed in the hh release. [18:01] But that are not very much. I upgraded from gutsy to hardy on a sony vaio and nearly not realized the upgrade [18:02] hm, I use nvidia proprietary drivers [18:02] do you know if they would be OK after the upgrade? [18:02] nvidia geforce 8 I think [18:02] any one have any idea about Wubi problem or it is a BIG BUG :( [18:02] I upgraded yesterday and I didn't lost nothing [18:03] nice, you also use nvidia proprietary drivers? [18:03] yes [18:03] for FX 5500 [18:03] thanks for the info [18:03] hm...ok! [18:07] is the problem some people referred to on the mailing list that systems don't boot on current up-to-date status a confirmed problem? [18:07] erm...is dist-upgrade a command? is there an equivalent or something? [18:08] Jorl17: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [18:08] thanks === sparr_ is now known as sparr [18:16] Jorl17: dist-upgrade is deprecated, use full-upgrade instead.. [18:16] oh great...now that I am upgrading with dist-upgrade ^^ [18:16] thanks for the info [18:16] guess i'll use full upgrade soon then [18:22] hi there [18:22] hi [18:22] how can i use the ubuntu irc? (i am useing pidgin for irc) === tclineks_ is now known as tclineks [18:23] could someone help me out with some compile issues im getting with g++ 4.2 ? [18:23] pseigo: you have xchat-gnome (menu applications > add/remove) [18:24] savvas: on pidgin? [18:25] savvas: and i am on kde 3.4 [18:27] I forget the proper way to clean out old scripts from /etc/init.d/? [18:29] how do I use full-upgrade= [18:29] ?* [18:30] Jorl17: you can $ man aptitude, for the next time, but... # aptitude full-upgrade [18:30] hm, thanks! but dist-upgrade did the job I guess [18:31] Release candidate out yet? [18:32] Topic says beta... [18:32] savvas: were you ignoring me? [18:34] Hi, xfce terminal does not perform hinting on fonts, though it's enabled desktop wide. Any idea what could be wrong? [18:35] use a font that supports hinting? [18:35] the bitstream mono font is good [18:35] oh well, I have to boot into windows to test this...I really need to install code blocks and gcc in my second pc so i don't have to ext Ubuntu [18:35] why not use vmware? [18:35] 'cause I'd have to reinstall windows there right? [18:36] <^Ocean^> wrong [18:36] I can't build an image from windows that has 100 gbs in reality [18:36] then i'd have no space [18:36] it can use a real partition [18:36] it can? [18:36] Jorl17, only you can change your parameters to suit your needs, but does Windows really need that much space? [18:37] or why not move your data to an ext3 partition and share it using vmware file sharing [18:37] when I mean windows, i catually mean windows and it's apps...windowze's drive C I mean, windows itself ocuppiues its own needs [18:37] the problem isn't sharing data [18:37] it's actually testing applications [18:37] vmware is perfect for that [18:37] like what applications? [18:37] vmware supports snapshots [18:37] <^Ocean^> Jorl17: You can use vmware too load an exisiting windows partition, windows will find all new hardware at first but should work [18:38] I'm porting code fI made from windows to work on both of them, so I need the Client app (it's a chat application) in windows to test the srver (ported) code [18:38] because I haven't ported the Chat App itself yet [18:38] Jorl17, i develop on Windows and Linux too, VMWare is such a time saver [18:38] try virtualbox also, its very good [18:38] its unbelievable [18:39] hm... [18:39] <^Ocean^> wine might also be usefull [18:39] maybe if you could help me setting this up ^^ [18:39] So, problems with wireless in the 8.04 [18:39] ocean, I have wine, my code simply messes it up [18:39] I can help you with virtualbox [18:39] hey, I work for a living, I don't hold hands for a living ;) [18:39] unless i replace wsockets2 dll with windoeze's [18:39] :) i get it [18:39] It finds my wireless stick fine, it finds the networks fine but refuses to join the network [18:39] x1250, guide me then if you may :) [18:40] Trust me, I was reluctanct to move to vmware, but once I did, there is no going back [18:40] It keeps asking the passphrase over and over like it's incorrect but I doublechecked and it should be okay [18:40] <^Ocean^> Jorl17: Well i wold suggest vmware then :) I have used it for years [18:40] where can i get virtualbox (it is an OS emulator, right?) [18:40] Fraeon, go to your keyring and delete the entries for your wireless [18:40] Ocean, I used vmware in windows, the thing is I don't really want to mess to much with it...never used int i linux... [18:40] download the package from virtualbox.org (gutys package) first. [18:41] BTW i'm on hardy [18:41] I know [18:41] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/192888 [18:41] ok [18:41] Launchpad bug 192888 in libflashsupport "firefox crashes on flash contents" [High,Confirmed] [18:41] i'm going there [18:41] dwatson_: is this a common problem and can it happen when the OS is just installed? [18:42] Fraeon, it happened to me a while back [18:42] I Just make sure you are up to date on all of your packages after you get on your wireless [18:42] Ooh, nspluginwrapper for i386. [18:42] Finally fixes that damn crashing. [18:43] guess I have to add deb http://www.virtualbox.org/debian gutsy non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list [18:43] Jorl17: not necesary, you can dowload the package itself [18:44] how (i'm sorry, as I said, started using linux short time and I'm still...slow) [18:44] Jorl17: https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=innotek-1.5.6-G-F@CDS-CDS_SMI [18:44] just select the platform from the dropdown, agree license and continue [18:45] yes, ok thanks, i was there, didn't see the option to download ^^ [18:46] oh, let me just install java... [18:46] savvas: ah. I thought that was a question :-p [18:46] savvas: certainly the grammar was ambiguous [18:46] Jorl17: you'll need to install libxerces27 and libxalan110. Virtualbox depends on them. [18:47] ok, i'm installing them with apt-get [18:48] <^Ocean^> any one had a problem with the new kernel not booting ? [18:48] I am yet to know, haven't rebooted yet [18:48] Anyone else have suspend to ram work on the livecd, but immediately after install, not working? [18:49] drivin me crazy. [18:49] <^Ocean^> cycom: The suspusnd feature is broken [18:50] ^Ocean^: what do you mean? [18:50] ^Ocean^: my symptoms are basically the system comes back with no keyboard and display, but I can ssh in, kill Xorg, and it comes back. [18:51] ^Ocean^: top shows Xorg using 100% CPU as well. [18:51] <^Ocean^> Hibernation does not work in a Wubi installation. Even if this option is available on the desktop, you should avoid using it. [18:51] if one wants to un-install a program AND all the deps it pulled in - -how does one accomplish this? [18:52] aptitude should do that for you [18:52] Hi, is there a problem with network manager atm? (intel 3945ABG) [18:52] ive never used aptitude - how would one do so? [18:52] ^Ocean^: hibernation works fine, and I'm notusing wubi... [18:52] i installed the package kopete-kde4 [18:52] <^Ocean^> Ah [18:52] W8TAH, just use sudo apt-get autoremove (after removing the package) [18:52] <^Ocean^> sorry <-- just woke up [18:52] aptitude remove package, or aptitude purge package, if you want to delete the config files also [18:53] thanks [18:53] ^Ocean^: It's just suspend, and only after I install. There are literally no differences in the files in /etc/ on the livecd and and the files in /etc/ on the hard disc install other than normal stuff, like added users and /etc/fstab [18:54] <^Ocean^> cycom: Try useing an older kernel ? [18:54] ^Ocean^: same kernel as the livecd [18:54] could someone tell me where firefox comes installed as default? [18:54] ^Ocean^: I've run no updates. Before, I had a fully updated system. I just reinstalled. [18:54] i knew that...3 days ago...now i can't remember [18:54] ^Ocean^: the fully updated system had the same problem. [18:55] Identical, in fact. On the livecd, I hit suspend, and it suspends happily, just as it does in the full install. When I resume, the livecd quickly returns to X, but the install does not... [19:01] <^Ocean^> i thought Rammstein was German ? [19:01] Rammstein is German, yes [19:01] But they have a song in Spanish :P [19:01] <^Ocean^> lol [19:01] :) [19:02] i'm am compiling the latest version of ALSA [19:02] praboy: did sound worked on the live-cd? [19:02] i didn't test it [19:02] <^Ocean^> did you try running alsaconf ? [19:03] now, i am compiling the latest version of ALSA [19:03] are you sure its not a volume control issue? [19:03] yers [19:03] yes [19:03] well [19:03] wait a minute [19:03] <^Ocean^> id try running alsoconf before recompileing it [19:03] i am doing it now [19:04] <^Ocean^> also are u sure u have the permissions set right :) [19:04] sudo: alsaconf: command not found [19:04] :S [19:04] <^Ocean^> id also try cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp [19:04] Wait, another possible cause of audio issues: PulseAudio. [19:04] * cycom sighs [19:05] I just don't get this [19:05] why would suspend work fine on a livecd, then after installing to hard disk, not work? [19:05] <^Ocean^> cycom, hmm, maybe a bad sector on the hard drive ? [19:05] i installed Ubuntu from VMWARE [19:05] on Windows [19:05] Okay, so running Xubuntu 8.04, and I can't connect to my wireless router [19:05] ^Ocean^: It's using the same swap space for suspend [19:06] because a didnt have any DVD [19:06] i can try reinstalling Ubuntu [19:06] from a DVD [19:06] praboy: you're running ubuntu on vmare and dont have sound in there? [19:06] no [19:06] i'm running ubuntu native [19:06] ok [19:06] ^Ocean^: actually, it's suspending to ram anyhow... [19:06] but i installed ubuntu from VMWARE [19:06] ^Ocean^: and don't forget, it resumes, just Xorg and keyboard don't work unless I kill them and restart them. [19:06] ^Ocean^: I can still ssh in [19:07] I don't know whether I have an issue with keyrings (can't find them), but for one, the wireless worked when I briefly disabled WPA. When WPA is disabled, however, it refuses the password even though it's correct (using the same password on 2 other machines). [19:07] <^Ocean^> hmm, are u sure you dont just have too switch back too the right terminal ? [19:08] Sorry, "when WPA is enabled" [19:08] on the second sentence [19:08] <^Ocean^> alt+f7 or f8 ? [19:08] i dont kown what i can do [19:08] ^Ocean^: tried it :/ keyboard is completely unresponsive [19:09] praboy: take a look to log files on /var/log [19:09] <^Ocean^> but when you kill X the keybored comes back >? [19:09] ^Ocean^: yup. [19:09] $ dmesg also can say something [19:09] ^Ocean^: and remember, Xorg is using 100% cpu [19:09] ^Ocean^: this is regardless of graphics driver. I've used ati, vesa, and fglrx, all with identical results. [19:10] i can reinstall Ubuntu [19:10] from a CD [19:10] what do you think? [19:10] praboy: better try a live-cd and see if you got sound in there [19:10] Ok [19:10] Thanks x1250 ! ;) [19:10] if yes, then reinstall, or debug it, whatever it fits you :P [19:10] <^Ocean^> cycom, hmm, id try an older kernel just too be suure [19:10] Fraeon_: what driver are you using for wireless? [19:11] ok [19:11] Thanks [19:11] ^Ocean^: like I said, it's the exact same kernel version from the liveCD XD [19:11] Whatever came by default in Xubuntu [19:11] "Chau y muchas gracias !!!" [19:11] How do I check that? [19:11] chao praboy que estes bien :P [19:11] ^Ocean^: diff says they are identical! [19:11] :P [19:11] <^Ocean^> id try an older one anyhow [19:12] ^Ocean^: you mean like a gutsy kernel? [19:12] <^Ocean^> yeah [19:13] Hmh, I'll try switching sticks whether that helps [19:14] hello. can anybody help me, getting xorg to recognise my monitor/graphic card? i can use it with gnome, but the X11 configuration file is "empty" [19:15] i have a Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 with (from dmesg) a 965GM chipset [19:15] a_l_e: try # dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg [19:15] <^Ocean^> if you can use it whats the problem ?? [19:16] it shouldn't be empty, AFAIK [19:16] <^Ocean^> the new x.org has a pritty empty config file [19:16] yeah but pretty empty != empty [19:16] x1250: it's not empty.... but there is nothing "special in it..." I downloaded the server version of 8.04 beta about a week or so ago and have popped it on a test box. Will I need to do much once the full release occurs, or will any updates come down with a normal apt-get update ? [20:09] why does language-support-en include openoffice ?? [20:09] and mozilla thunderbird [20:09] I don't even have these things installed [20:09] hwilde, crappy dependencies if you aks me, that shouldn't be like that, but packagers call IMO [20:09] but/bad [20:10] hwilde: Try just 'language-pack-en'. [20:10] it's going to take up 285MB of diskspace [20:10] mrtimdog, I did that... "apt-get install language-pack-en" [20:10] Hey, i think it worked! [20:10] Jorl17: with your existing partition? [20:11] i cudn't c my windows partition while installing ubuntu hardy [20:11] well, i'm trying, it found my bootloader [20:11] selected winxp but it isn't booting [20:11] hwilde, take a look to $ aptitude show language-pack-en, to see depends [20:11] i'll try and fix these things [20:12] it's including aspell, libcurl, gtk stuff, xwindows stuff, open office, whiptail, wbritish... I don't need this stuff [20:12] is there any reason why libsdl1.2debian-alsa is installed by default instead of libsdl1.2debian-all? [20:12] it showed my 160 gb hdd as a whole free space [20:12] yeah, bad packager (lazy one) call [20:13] I guess that explains how I lost my locale tho, when I removed open office [20:14] edajai: try installing TestDisk on your Ubuntu, and run it on the hard drive. [20:14] It's a utility that can "magically" fix partition tables. [20:14] It happened the same to me on my laptop, but I managed somehow to get locales and not have wbritish and family... I get my laptop back in a couple of days, I'll see then how I have it there [20:14] oh.. apt-get testdisk will do right? [20:15] hm it's booting now [20:15] reread part of the document and found my flaw [20:15] here it is my modded windows xp booting :) [20:15] anyone know why -alsa is installed by default instead of -all or -pulseaudio? [20:15] Jorl17: great :) [20:16] keanu: gutsy upgrade? [20:16] advanced linux sound architecture rules [20:16] x1250, nope, new install [20:16] hardy's supposed to go all-SVG now instead of using pngs for everything, right? [20:16] like for icons and all [20:17] from what i've seen, programs using libsdl that require sound will either segfault or not output sound without that package [20:17] how do you make svgs go with xdg-icon-resource. the internet says xdg-icon-resource doesnt support svg [20:18] however, some programs such as the rockbox simulator aren't available in deb form and therefore can't have libsdl1.2debian-all or -pulseaudio as a dependency, and would segfaults when trying to play music [20:18] i was just wondering if there's a reason (other than the package being overlooked) as to why libsdl1.2debian-all or -pulseaudio aren't installed by default [20:19] keanu: are any of those two packages needed by any other ubuntu package installed by default on a clean hardy installation? [20:20] x1250, if you can tell me a way to search for default packages requiring either of those, i can check [20:20] if gutsy is the current OS i have.. can the LiveCD be used to upgrade or do i still need to get the alternateCD? [20:21] bastid_raZor: alternate or internet [20:21] macogw; will the LiveCD ever be able to upgrade? [20:21] i doubt it [20:21] x1250, but since pulseaudio is the default sound system, it would seem as if libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio should be used by default instead of -alsa [20:22] maybe if they got rid of wubi and the foss-for-windows thats on it [20:22] okay, possibly are the LiveCD and alternate going to be combined? [20:22] the DVD has them combined [20:22] okay, that helps. [20:22] x1250, ^Ocean^: if you think it could help, i've summerized here my current tries: http://www.ideale.ch/computer/man/minipc.html [20:22] then technically if i have the DVD i can upgrade from 7.10 [20:23] the packages just dont fit, i think. the livecd doesnt really do things apt-like...its more of a disk image copy thing [20:23] i think so, yes [20:24] reason i ask is when upgraded to 7.10 i was trying to keep my /home which on a seperate partition but the migration assistant failed.. mainly i want a fresh install of 8.04 and keep my current /home .. i was unable to do this in 7.10 (migration assistant failure) [20:25] hey everything jsut froze on me... I can't click anywhere... [20:25] keanu: maybe $ grep -r "Depends" /var/lib/apt/lists | grep package_here [20:25] untested [20:25] running ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron [20:25] afallenhope, is your mouse unplugged from the usb port [20:25] hi [20:26] hwilde: no... it works.. i mean I can't click on anything.. I went to adjust the time... [20:26] and it froze [20:26] afallenhope: is it that only your panels are frozen .. can you work on the open applications? [20:26] afallenhope, metacity --replace [20:27] gunashekar: yeah the panels are all frozen but I have this open [20:27] I don't know if I can load a terminal window even [20:27] afallenhope: yes the problem is same as mine... related to the gnome clock... after i set the weather [20:28] a_l_e: maybe there is some special xorg package for your display driver. [20:28] okay... how do I fix it [20:28] lol [20:28] Right now using vesa driver? [20:28] afallenhope: wish i knew.. some ppl suggest disabling the calender in evolution.. dunno how to do that [20:29] gunashekar: I don't even know how to go to the account configuration page in evolutions [20:29] afallenhope: some others suggest crtl-alt-backspc and this makes the panels disappear [20:30] so i have to restart again after that [20:30] everything works fine as long as i dont touch the clock/calendar/weather [20:30] hi, again! i've realized that my problem with the ata exceptions maybe related with ncq, do you know how to disable ncq? [20:30] lol. [20:31] does anyone know what's wrong with the nvidia-driver on 8000-cards? The driver from the hardy-repo gives pinkish shadows around windows and menus. The same version driver from nvidia.com compiled and installed manually shows no such problem. [20:31] jose, whats ncq? [20:31] afallenhope: my problems dont end there with hardy [20:32] from wikipedia: "Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a technology designed to increase performance of SATA hard disks" [20:32] alright, so I'm running hardy. In the past I was running non-ubuntu-derived nvidia drivers. Now I'd like to use the ubuntu sanctioned ones. Can anyone give me a clue how I would go about this? [20:33] it seems that some disks do not support ncq, but they say they do. They can be blacklisted patching the kernel, but i'm no in the mood. [20:33] I think i read somewhere that there's a way to dissable ncq without recompiling the kernel, but i just don't remember... [20:34] this has probably been asked a million times today, but there's nothing in the topic about it, so when is the release candidate coming out? [20:34] tomorrow [20:35] it still says apr. 17 on the release schedule...? [20:35] x1250, the only package that depends on libsdl1.2debian-* is libsdl1.2debian, in which case, wouldn't that mean that there wouldn't be a problem with switching the default of -alsa with -pulseaudio or -all? [20:36] x1250, hate that graphics card much/ [20:36] :) [20:36] i've just found how to know if ncq is on. cat /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth [20:36] do you have a Toshiba? [20:37] x1250, I've got the Toshiba Satellite that has both that card as well as a weirdo unsupported internal usb wireless card...it's so wonky [20:37] instabilities between those two drivers cause me no end of trouble [20:37] Anyway, no one knows how to uninstall my nvidia drivers so I can use ubuntu's supported stuff? [20:39] jadams: it works ok in here, I can play nexuiz, and thats enough for me :) [20:39] also compiz works awesome :) [20:39] So the other day I updated to 8.04 beta and now for some reason when I try to load XP, it asks for a disckcheck, which goes smootly, then i just get a screen with the default background, and no login interface. what gives? [20:40] x1250, it works so so for me...the graphics are nice, but the stability isn't there [20:40] hi [20:40] will rc be out today [20:40] jadams: what are your problems? [20:40] ? [20:40] jadams: the nvidia-package has an uninstall option [20:41] jose [20:41] ex: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run --uninstall [20:41] anyone have a solution? [20:41] jose, found it here: http://linux-ata.org/faq.html [20:41] pheld, thanks a ton [20:42] Anyone know why my brightness keys have abandonned me lately? Other hotkeys, fine. [21:02] josh04: yea, specifically the wakeup process from suspend, do you know which project(s) handling that? [21:02] Hi, I upgraded from Gutsy yesterday to Hardy RC and just wondering where the red line in the main menu is. In the beta it was still there.. [21:02] The red vertical line on the left [21:02] lol [21:03] the theme? it isn't there anymore, it looked cool though [21:03] don't know if it is a part of the theme... [21:03] but I really was keen on that look [21:04] x1250: Murrine theme is back again since 0.15 [21:04] Well, yep I don't know either, just assumed [21:04] juliank: have murrine active [21:04] and the mouse over looks the same [21:04] Two days after it was removed in 0.14 [21:05] but only the red vertical bar is missing [21:05] bahamada: This part seems to be gone [21:05] how can I get it back? :) [21:05] lol [21:05] I didn't like it [21:05] is there some way to tell what it is stuck on? [21:05] I like [21:05] i am able to switch to a TTY while it sits there [21:06] I loved it, but since its gone I changed to Murrine Compact from gnome-look.org [21:06] awesome theme, dark and light versions [21:06] take a look into it [21:07] hmm [21:08] I don't like to small lines. Thats what I like on the human themes [21:08] the fat lines [21:08] It looks more solid [21:09] padding for menus options? I prefer small menus [21:09] once you get used to it, you'll never get back :P [21:10] but its an odd sensation at the beginning [21:10] Arand: pm-utils is your best bet, i think. [21:10] for example in the firefox the drop-down arrow in teh adress bar is to thin [21:10] but in the normal human the menus to ugly [21:10] :( [21:11] yeah, I thought the same way bahamada, but now I'm a better person, this theme improves your humanity. Try out for a couple of days, heh [21:11] Question:when is the RC of hardy supposed to be? [21:12] ok I will give it a try [21:12] http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Murrine+Compact?content=78182 this? [21:12] with hardy I sometimes experience system freezes. [21:19] The original betas were much more stable than firefox 3 is now :( [21:20] yeah ff has a couple of annoying bugs with flash right now [21:20] josh04: okay cheers, 'll have a look at that. [21:24] can i just edit some file and remove it? [21:24] eagles0513875: you have two options: 1) install gnome-desktop-environment, or 2) get rid of "gnome" package (nothing bad will happen), its just a metapackage. I dont have any of the two packages installed, gnome and gnome-desktop-environment. But its your call. [21:24] i did do a update after i installed [21:24] 405 updates or so [21:24] sure, you could do that...... [21:24] my windows will not boot for some reason after a hardy upgrade, it goes through the windows boot screen, but then freezes and i just see the background image. i do have full mouse control though. just nothing i can do. [21:27] x1250: ok [21:27] just metapackages for "ease of use", but If you dont need tomboy or other packages from "gnome" package, then is safe to uninstall it [21:28] Does anyone here know *a lot* about making sleep work? I've tried all the usual ways, and a fair few unusual ones. [21:30] x1250: no [21:31] josh04: I've even had some moments of success. [21:31] eagles0513875: or install gnome-desktop-environment, any of those two solutions will make the error dissapear [21:32] x1250: 1st one doesnt work [21:32] bewst: More than me then. My greatest success thus far has been a flash of hard disk light [21:32] eagles0513875: what does it say? [21:32] what graphics card and driver are you using? [21:32] same msg as before 2nd seems to work [21:32] ok, fine then [21:32] guys, isnt hardy supposed to go "stable" like...in...a week? [21:33] ya on the 24th [21:33] it will be released.... like in a week :P [21:33] we still got a lot of bugs to iron out...have no clue how were gonna pull that miracle off. [21:33] what about the RC? [21:34] they out for testing [21:34] Are there any ubuntu devs here? I really want to know if my efforts are going to waste on this fglrx/suspend bug [21:34] the rc's out? [21:34] ya [21:34] bewst: intel 965, intel driver, but i don't think mines a graphics issue. the hard disk spins up then immediately spins down again when I resume [21:34] it's supposed to be today Clue_by_4 [21:34] where can I get it? its the beta link? [21:35] josh04: Oh, sorry, disks have never been my problem, so I don't know anything in that area. [21:35] im looking..im looking...hrrrmmm [21:35] Clue_by_4: no its a link to daily build [21:35] ask in teh #kubuntu-devel [21:36] bewst: might not be the disk, might be a hard crash. can't tell either way because there are no logs :P [21:36] josh04: sorry, that's not my area of expertise [21:37] hi all. I have a game controller assigned to /dev/input/js1 . is there a way to get it working with wine games? [21:37] bewst: Doesn't matter. I'm pretty much hoping a kernel update at some point will magically fix everything now :P [21:37] hi guys [21:37] x1250: at the rate im going with with gnome im probably going to bork everything [21:38] x1250: [21:38] i have a q. using splashy - does anybody knows something? [21:38] x1250: nm answered my own question [21:38] eagles, thanks, i found it...had to do some digging but ultimately found it. [21:38] Keule: Ask away [21:39] when i want to install it - synaptics wants to uninstall ubunt-desktop, usplash, - is there any problem? josh04 [21:39] hardy nightly builds http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/daily-live/current/ [21:39] yep thats it [21:40] yep :) [21:40] Keule: No, ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage, does nothing. Usplash is the normal splash manager, they conflict [21:40] that should be on the topic :( [21:40] ok but ubuntu starts without usplash [21:40] argh, i can't get X to restart from a script [21:40] i dont have the prob of a complete crash... [21:40] I am waiting for the Release to come out which is !hardy [21:40] so glad that hardy supports my ati x1400 [21:40] where is a gpg key stored so i can take a backup of it [21:40] !hardy [21:40] Hardy Heron is the code name for the next release of Ubuntu (8.04-LTS), due April 24, 2008 - For more info, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyHeron - CONSIDER IT TO BE BETA SOFTWARE - Discussion and support in #ubuntu+1, NOT #ubuntu [21:41] now if only my fan wouldn't run so loud constantly [21:41] shadow420: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/daily-live/current/ [21:41] american: yeah, x1400 works very very nice on hardy [21:41] I have it on my laptop [21:41] shadow420: those r the release clients [21:41] shadow, its...out i thought [21:41] Keule: Without usplash you'll just get a black screen boot, but it should still boot [21:41] Clue_by_4: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/63564/ [21:41] Clue_by_4: not that [21:41] ok josh04 thx - ill try [21:41] Clue_by_4: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/daily-live/current/ [21:41] my laptop is getting really hot for some reason [21:41] keep on rockin! i like hardy ;o) [21:41] so when ubuntu 8.04-LTS is released will it just be a matter of installing updates to upgrade? [21:41] eagles, you pointed me there, im already downloading it :D [21:42] Clue_by_4: kool [21:42] american: thats the way, yes [21:42] get helping making kubuntu the best distro out there [21:42] Keule: good luck :) [21:42] eagles0513875 I rather get a CD of hardy I am currently using Kubuntu Hardy Beta [21:43] kubuntu hardy comes with kde4? [21:43] shadow420: same here those r the daily release clients [21:43] american, when hardy goes completely stable..i mean..when we even get past the RC..and on to the actual release DATE......all you have to do is run update-manager and you will be completely up to date. [21:43] x1250: dont think so kde4 is still lacking lots of functionality [21:44] that was wasted bandwith :/ [21:44] lol [21:44] eagles0513875: yep, I used kde4 till a week ago on debian lenny/sid/experimental in my desktop, but fell in love with compiz, so I wipe it out [21:44] compiz is da bomb! [21:44] but I am planing on switching back to Gnome I think KDE is just to a pain for me to re-learn a new desktop [21:44] x1250: i had compiz working before i borked my previous install [21:45] KDE is pretty sexy, but...its...i hate to say the word...bloated. [21:45] <_max_> im having problems with the installer setting the partition table to GPT [21:45] what I REALLY miss about kde4 is the console integration with dolphin. I really think nautilus should have something like that [21:45] <_max_> iv i enter console and use parted to change it the friggin installer changes it back to msdos [21:45] too much much look anf feel of windows in my opinion [21:45] <_max_> anyone know how to override the damn installer? [21:45] _max_: how is that? [21:45] shadow420 some people like that...dunno why. [21:46] shadow420: true but u getting something much better than it and 2ndly when kde4 is out with a bang it will look more like mac osx [21:46] <_max_> x1250 how is what? [21:46] shadow420 i left windows for a reason heh. [21:46] <_max_> i have a 6tb drive, and msdos can only read 2tb [21:46] <_max_> so i try to install 8.04 with GPT label, however there is no option in the installer to use any labels, it defaults to msdos [21:46] <_max_> so before partitioning the disc i go in and change to gpt with parted. [21:46] Ah, well, I don't know [21:46] <_max_> and its fine until i click [install] [21:46] <_max_> the installer THEN changes teh friggin label to msdos again [21:47] Clue_by_4 I still use windows but I want to keep linux and windows separated from each other [21:47] _max_ go get a the gparted CD [21:47] !gparted [21:47] GParted is a !GUI partitioning program. Type « sudo apt-get install gparted » in a console to install it - A GParted "live" CD is available at http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/ [21:47] !gui [21:47] The graphical user interface (GUI) in Ubuntu is composed of many elements, including the !X server, a window manager, and a desktop environment such as !GNOME or !KDE (which themselves use the !GTK and !Qt toolkits respectively) [21:48] * Clue_by_4 is just covering bases :) [21:48] _max_ | !gparted [21:48] <_max_> shadow520 , and do what? [21:48] lol [21:48] <_max_> there is no way to convert a msdos label to gpt [21:48] <_max_> since its a 512byte vs 32kb mbr [21:48] * Clue_by_4 debates on throwing a botabuse out there. [21:49] _max_ GPT what the hell? [21:49] <_max_> even if i change the label with a gparted cd (which i dont need) the ubuntu installer overrides it to msdos [21:49] trying to boot 8.04 from CD to install on a HP ze4500 laptop. Are there any 'other options'I should add, since it seems never to get past loading gnome. TIA [21:49] omg, 1 hour of download...another 10 minutes of getting something so i can burn the iso.......im gonna be here a while :/ [21:49] ll [21:49] <_max_> shadow420, i need gpt since the drive is 6tb [21:49] <_max_> msdos only supports 2tb [21:49] * Clue_by_4 puts head in hands [21:49] Clue_by_4: dont feel bad my isp is such crap that i end up taking bout 4 hrs to downlaod the iso [21:50] omg, thats...yeah..now i dont feel so bad! [21:50] are you on dialup?! [21:50] fo rkubuntu and about another 2 hrs fora 230mb patch [21:50] lol [21:50] no 2mb cable connection with monthly download limits and restricted speeds during the day [21:50] <_max_> so question is, how do i override the damn installer from changing to msdos label in the last minute? [21:50] * Clue_by_4 does NOT miss dialup [21:50] eagles0513875: yeah, cox does that crap to me [21:50] Clue_by_4: me neither back in teh states my parents got 5mb comcast connection [21:50] eagles0513875 Clue_by_4 heh I am on DSL and it took me about 2 hours to download the Beta ISO of Hardy [21:51] _max_: try asking in debian, but dont say you're on ubuntu :) [21:51] lol to me bout 4 5 hrs [21:51] is there anything I cn specify in the 'other options' line to help me out? [21:52] x1250, dunno if you saw my last message: the only package that depends on libsdl1.2debian-* is libsdl1.2debian, in which case, wouldn't that mean that there wouldn't be a problem with switching the default of -alsa with -pulseaudio or -all? [21:52] <_max_> x1250 its not a linux problem, its a -ubuntu- installer problem [21:52] <_max_> its nothing to do with gparted , parted or whatever. [21:52] <_max_> its the actuall installer [21:52] <_max_> anyone tried the alternate cd? anyone know what options are given when partitioning the discs? [21:52] did you try the alternate iso? [21:52] <_max_> no im downloading it now [21:53] _max_: i have tried it its like the normal cd installer but txt based [21:53] same options and everything [21:53] _max_ why do you need so much room? [21:53] <_max_> shadow420, is this relevant :)? [21:54] anyone encountered problems with ubuntu 8.04 and firefox 3 beta 5 + flash videos = Crash [21:54] _max_ not really just something that may help me figure out your problems [21:54] basso, thats a known issue [21:54] basso: not i i would still report it to launchpad that way if someone has they can confirm the bug and get it worked out [21:54] basso, i think thats documented [21:54] x1250: its been working for me [21:55] basso I suggest you downgrade to FF2 if you are having problems [21:55] okay okay take it easy :P [21:55] lol [21:55] it does crash, but just not always... rather randomly === janito_ is now known as Lamego [21:55] poor guy were bombarding em [21:55] with flash I mean [21:55] what issue with ff3 that has me pissed of is hwo it doesnt know how to handel files by opening the appropriate program [21:55] sometimes it works and sometimes it says bang [21:56] eagles0513875: like what filetype? [21:56] x1250: ya if i dl a pdf for instance it brings up a dialogue box and no programs to choose from [21:56] there is already a bugfiled and confirmed [21:56] how is the powersaving feature working in 8.04?... My laptop is nearly burning my lap after i jumped from 7.10 to 8.04.. [21:57] eagles0513875: it works for me... [21:57] x1250: hummm interesting [21:58] i might have borked it even on the previous install of beta it was doing the same thing [21:58] I just updated to hardy, and the upgrade had to be canclelled while in progress due to a package not configuring properly. I ran dpkg-configure -a afterwards to see if I could fix the problem, and rebooted. Now, when I try to su in SUL mode, or when I try to login in multi-user mode, I get a "module is unknown" error. [21:58] Any ideas? [21:58] ahh yes.. When Compis Fusion is enabled and you want to watch videos the screen go black and you can do anything :O [21:59] the same problem resides in KDE4 desktop effects aswell [21:59] even VLC says bang [21:59] ffm__: did you try full-upgrading again? [22:00] x1250, I couldn't, the option wasn't there anymore. [22:00] x1250, And now that I am on hardy, I can't start a gui as root. [22:00] ffm__: no packages to upgrade? [22:06] x1250, When I log in on MUM (in the tty1), it authenticates me, tells me I have new mail, then doesn't start my shell and displays the Moudle is unknown erorr message. (just asking for my general curiosity...) [22:20] no [22:21] shadow420, im sure it does -- but i dont have the money to go buy the card right now to get the drivers [22:21] i was hoping it would just work [22:21] JASONCO is the card in your CPU a Nvidia [22:21] thats what lspci claims [22:21] yes [22:22] JASONCO: Alpha/beta releases constantly go through updates, daily..if not hourly...something is usually always unstable, you got the short end of the stick. [22:22] Alan_m yes im familiar with beta software in general [22:23] JASONCO, This is a beta OS. [22:23] then I would suggest to go over to the Restricted Driver which is in the Restricted Drivers Manager [22:23] Jasonco, just making sure buddy.....not trying to insult you. [22:23] JASONCO then I would suggest to go over to the Restricted Driver which is in the Restricted Drivers Manager [22:23] JASONCO, We have _lots_ of nasty bugs and instabilities. This looks like something broken in Hardy but I don't know what. [22:35] Actually I'm just building the packages. [22:38] shadow420, derspankster Alan_M and others thank you -- that resolved my issue [22:38] JASONCO: good! [22:39] I have a dual screen display set up through the virtual line in my xorg.conf file. I was wondering if theres a way to change which monitor linux uses as my default? [22:39] JASONCO glad to be of help [22:40] !KDE [22:40] KDE (http://kde.org) is the !desktop environment used natively in !Kubuntu. [22:43] hey guys, could some one help me set up my wireless internet, its a trendnet tew-444UB usb wifi card [22:45] shadow420: sorry, I know nothing about KDE [22:45] derspankster thats ok [22:46] i dont know enough about kde to help ya out either. [22:46] ive used it for a solid week..had nothing but trouble..so..yeah [22:46] shadow420: how did you enable it? [22:47] Turski it came enabled by defaut [22:47] :O [22:47] well, look to kmenu -> system -> desktop effects [22:47] Compiz is not installed [22:48] eh? [22:48] you shouldn't have any composite then [22:49] so my machine just got a huge spike in cpu temperature. It actually went up to 100C, and my machine shut off [22:49] haha [22:50] get better cooler :) [22:50] i restarted, and now it's stable at 52C. I also turned off AIGLX, so that might have helped [22:50] <_max_> it seems the ubuntu 8.04 alternate doesn't have parted, so i can't change the label to GPT [22:50] <_max_> has ANYONE installed ubuntu on a drive thats larger than 2tb? [22:50] <_max_> iv spent 2 days solid on this now =( this is getting anoying [22:50] who even has that big drive :) [22:50] I'm having an issue that I think is related to nm-applet but I could be wrong. For some reason I can't access certain sites on the internet, I know the configuration in networkmanager is right because its the same as the other computer I'm using, but for some reason it's just not going to some sites, but it can go to google and others. I'm pretty sure this is a DNS issue, but resolv.conf says I'm good to go...what's up? [22:50] Turski, my point is that this never happened on other versions of Ubuntu. Intel GPU, core 2 duo scaled to 1ghz [22:51] <_max_> Turski: im betting quite alot of ppl. [22:51] K4k-laptop, if you have a site in mind, try nslookup thatsite.com [22:51] ok will try [22:51] <_max_> anyone know if there is a developer channel? im gona concider this a bug in the installer. [22:51] _max_, ubuntu-dev [22:52] Joe_CoT, what do I do with that infomration? [22:52] <_max_> there is -no- way to force the installer to use gpt, it simply overwrites whatever you feed it with msdos label [22:52] just go to the IP? [22:52] report bug to launchpad [22:52] K4k-laptop, does it return an ip address for the site? Try doing it at http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php . Is the ip the same? [22:52] yes [22:53] but firefox doesn't resolve it [22:53] do you have any proxy settings set in firefox? do other browsers resolve them? what's firefox's error message [22:53] nope, I don't have any proxy settings [22:53] Turski ok [22:53] Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection. [22:53] * Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later. [22:53] * Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection. [22:53] * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsi [22:54] K4k-laptop, try with another browser, like Epiphany or Konqueror. Do those also not resolve it? [22:54] How come the RC isn't uplloaded ? [22:54] k4k-laptop | !pastebin [22:54] wasn't it planned for the 17th ? [22:55] shadow420, yea I know I thought it was short enough though [22:55] scapor, it was pushed back to friday. like it is every time [22:55] !pastebin | K4k-laptop [22:55] K4k-laptop: pastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic) [22:55] !hardy [22:55] Hardy Heron is the code name for the next release of Ubuntu (8.04-LTS), due April 24, 2008 - For more info, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyHeron - CONSIDER IT TO BE BETA SOFTWARE - Discussion and support in #ubuntu+1, NOT #ubuntu [22:55] thanks, i'm glad we all know what a pastebin is. anyway [22:56] Joe_CoT: do you have any idea around what time it usually happens (the uploads) ? ;) I should dl it at uni tomorrow to do some crazy testing for the last week [22:58] scapor, i'm used to the afternoon (they /really/ stall on it), but it's really uncertain. Why don't you sign up for ubuntu-announce, and they'll tell you? https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-announce [22:58] Joe_CoT, epiphany can't load it either [22:58] so it's definitely something in my settings [22:58] but...what [22:58] hmmm [22:58] try pinging the site. try wget-ing the site [22:59] i can ping it just fine [22:59] Joe_CoT: if it only where an RSS feed ... is there any need for reactions on teh announcements ? [22:59] o wait, Joe_CoT no I can't [22:59] it comes back, "Destination Port Unreachable" [22:59] hmmm [22:59] scapor, http://www.ubuntu.com/rss.xml [23:00] K4k-laptop, yeah, about that :D so it's not your browser [23:00] tracert thatsite.com ? [23:00] what is hardy's firewall program? [23:00] um [23:00] Joe_CoT: then again, there's too much updates on that feed ;) ... [23:00] scapor, but that'll work for finding out when it gets released -tomorrow- [23:01] traceroute goes straight to the site [23:01] but some sites work just fine [23:01] wtf [23:02] can you switch to another network? [23:02] no but i can change my IP [23:02] I'm on a static wire network [23:02] have a server to ssh to? use it as a socks proxy, see if it works then [23:02] no server to proxy to right now [23:02] heh I am on a DHCP network [23:03] Joe_CoT: thanks for all the info. I'm off now, bye all [23:03] I've been having issues with network manager all day so I'm sure it's that [23:03] I don't need a proxy [23:03] hmm. so you can get dns, you can tracert, but you can't ping, and you can't browse [23:04] that didn't work either [23:05] I tried restarting the network interface with a new IP [23:05] nothing === K4k_ is now known as k4k-laptop [23:05] http://www.petitiononline.com/vent4Lin/petition.html [23:06] why do you need vent on linux? [23:06] it's not like games work well [23:06] yes [23:06] yet* [23:07] i need some help troubleshooting kmix [23:07] and/or sound system on kubuntu hardy beta [23:07] k4k-laptop, given that i just threw a Linux LAN Party, i'd disagree. but i also see no reason for Vent [23:13] k4k-laptop, i'm about out of ideas. anything in sudo iptables --list ? anything in /etc/hosts{,.allow,.deny} ? [23:14] lemme see [23:15] http://pastebin.ca/988826 [23:15] ^^ iptables [23:15] 1 week until release! [23:15] !gnome [23:15] and nothing unusual in hosts.allow/deny [23:15] gnome is a project that provides two things: The GNOME desktop environment, an intuitive and attractive desktop for end-users, users, and the GNOME development platform, an extensive framework for building applications that integrate into the rest of the desktop. [23:16] k4k-laptop, i'm no ip tables expert, but that has a lot more than i have. is that possibly the problem? [23:16] When will Intrepid be open? I'm ready to dist-upgrade. [23:16] RyanPrior: probably by May 5th [23:16] what do I do to change from KDE to Gnome [23:17] shadow420: install it [23:17] shadow420: logut and change in gdm to select kde instead and login [23:17] Joe_CoT, figured it out [23:17] I forgot I had moblock running [23:17] ahahah [23:17] rsk yeah install gnome and remove KDE [23:17] I'm sure that's the problem [23:18] yeah, figured it was something in there [23:18] What is moblock? [23:18] it's a peer2peer filter [23:18] Keep the nasty RIAA from spying on you? [23:18] more or less [23:19] I live on a college campus [23:19] it's that and other things [23:19] I just don't like people spying on me, even if they really aren't, it's peace of mind [23:19] Hi, the minimal iso netinstall freezes at "Please wait".. any idea why? [23:20] ffm: Probably it wants you to wait. [23:20] hmmm...interesting, now my internet just flat out stopped working without moblock lol [23:20] wow [23:20] brb [23:20] RyanPrior, I understand that, but it stays that way for a while... [23:20] Oh, nevermind.... [23:21] ffm: Does the kernel boot? [23:21] RyanPrior, I just needed more patience. [23:21] ffm: I hoped it would be that. :-) [23:21] In the future, what's a sane amount of time to wait for anything before assuming that it's screwed? [23:21] LOL, that's amazing. that RyanPrior was right, and not just being contrary [23:22] :) [23:22] RyanPrior, Yesterday, I cancelled my update to hardy after it had churned on updating a package for 30 minutes. And it was phpbb... [23:22] ffm, watch 3 episodes of star trek. if it still has the message, there's a problem [23:22] ffm, for a really slow machine, substitute star trek for all 7 Hellraiser movies [23:22] skipping the corney scenes or not? [23:22] ;) [23:23] ffm: It really depends. I like to check on CPU usage, memory usage, and so on to see if maybe something is deadlocked. [23:24] ffm: In the case of something like net booting where you don't really have external tools to diagnose the cause of the waiting, I'd just make a pot of coffee and run some errands, and assume that if it makes you wait for hours there's a bad problem. [23:25] ffm: Awhile ago there was an X.org regression where it took my laptop 9 hours to boot to GDM, but I found that out by leaving it on for that long. :-) [23:25] Isn't the Hardy RC supposed to be released today? [23:25] corinth, moved to tomorrow [23:26] subscribe to ubuntu-announce if you want to find out when it's released [23:26] That's funny, heh. The openSUSE 11.0 beta1 was moved to tomorrow, too. :P [23:27] Hmm.. some how.. Konqueror got removed when i updated.... [23:33] Huh. There's an "xfix" option in SU mode even when X isn't installed [23:35] how can i enable automatic updates? === Idrogeno is now known as Hydrogen [23:35] What's the Single user mode menu that appears called? [23:36] ffm, xfix option? [23:40] deadchip, System -> administration -> Software Sources [23:40] you'll find what you're looking for on the Updates tab [23:40] hmm there is no such item in administration [23:41] right-click on System, choose Edit Menus [23:42] Choose system->administration from the list at the left, put a check in Software Sources, close [23:42] ah great, thanks [23:42] np [23:43] hmm it deactivates itself again [23:43] i guess i'm missing something installed [23:43] ok, that i can't explain :) [23:44] very strange :) [23:45] maybe i have to click fast enough on Close in the menu editor before it deactivates itself [23:45] entertaintment computing [23:45] deadchip, try running: gksu --desktop /usr/share/applications/software-properties.desktop /usr/bin/software-properties-gtk [23:45] from a console [23:46] yeah [23:46] i need some help troubleshooting kmix [23:46] and/or sound system on kubuntu hardy beta [23:46] weird, it's there [23:48] Ahmuck, i hear ya, but I haven't touched KDE since Mandrake 7. Sorry [23:56] <|EQYNoX|> hi [23:57] <|EQYNoX|> is the RC already released ? [23:57] |EQYNoX|: check the web site, or look in the /topic [23:59] <|EQYNoX|> hm dont looks like :)
