gNewPower Hi, how can I get the UUID of my swap partition (I need to edit /etc/fstab and enter a new swap UUID)?00:17
zoredachehrm.. do you know the current device name for the partion /dev/hdc?00:19
zoredacheyou could just put in the device name...00:19
TheSheepgNewPower: I'd just give it a label and use that00:19
TheSheepgNewPower: or run /usr/lib/udev/migrate-fstab-to-uuid.sh00:19
gNewPowerwhat does /usr/lib/udev/migrate-fstab-to-uuid.sh do?00:20
TheSheepgNewPower: I have no idea00:20
TheSheepgNewPower: the second line of it might give you some hints though00:21
zoredacheah, I remeber now... use vol_id and the device name to get the uuid00:22
TheSheepzoredache: I think swap doesn't have uuid by default00:22
zoredachehrm...00:23
TheSheepzoredache: that script seems to generate it for swap partitions00:23
zoredacheCan give me a quick example of extracting the contents of a cpio archive?00:32
TheSheepcpio -i -d < archive00:34
zoredacheah, great! thanks00:35
zoredacheargh!!!  caspar is not casper00:41
zoredachewe need more words so people can give things better names00:42
TheSheepI just came up with a cool name for a python module, for example00:43
TheSheeppykachu00:43
TheSheepnot sure what it would be for, some gaming probably00:44
danielm_xD00:44
zoredacheI have been reading the caspar docs for the last hour trying to figure out what it had to do with building livecd....  Turns out it has nothing to do with building livecds00:45
zoredachefor that you want casper00:45
TheSheepcaspyr could be a python version...00:46

Free_BeerQuite possibly, but the cli seems perky enough19:38
zoredacheFirefox 2.x for example would be slow on that whatever enviroment you choose... ff2.x is a memory/cpu hog in my experience19:38
Free_Beerthe intended user is my 74 year old father who I'm going to convert into a Linux Warrior. :-)19:38

Free_Beermy father has very little experience with computers (read: no bad Windows habits) so speed really isn't going to be that big of an issue... I'd just like it to be as perky as possible.  (Which is why I might consider Xubuntu.)19:46

Free_Beereconomy is having its issues, but that's just the cyclic nature of it.  Politics can be a little weird, tho. (but that can be said of any nation) ;)19:55
Free_BeerSince they haven't asked me to be their Supreme Dictator, I guess they're satisfied with what they have already. :D19:56

floatingHi. i have a linux question. i have a dual boot linux and windows in grub. i plan to uninstall this linux partition and install another linux partition over it. so after i have uninstalled the linux partition, is the bootloader messed up, and can the xubuntu install then fix it right after that, when i install xubuntu20:08
floatingokay, i guess i do the mbrfix thing^^20:14
Helsu_fixmbr not mbrfix20:21
xxxxxxxcan 1080p h264 be done on linux?20:36
zoredachewhen you say 'done', do you mean viewed, created, or?20:36
zoredacheif you are wanting to view video files the answer is probably yes, but you would have to install the non-free codecs.. As for creating it, you would probably need to ask someone else20:38
xxxxxxxyes just viewing20:44
xxxxxxxthere are non free codecs for linux? what are they called?20:44
zoredache!codecs20:44
ubotuFor multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats - See also http://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/common-tasks-chap.html - But please use free formats if you can: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats20:44
TheSheepxxxxxxx: win32codecs :)20:44
xxxxxxxah i see as long as it's possible20:45
floatingis there a good guide for when you first start-up xubuntu, like installing codecs and other stuff20:45
floatingi remember there is/was such for ubuntu but20:45
xxxxxxxi ordered an athlon x2 5000+ and a gigabyte mobo with 780g hdmi20:45
zoredachemany of the instructions for ubuntu are the same for xubuntu20:45
xxxxxxxthanks guys for pointing me in the right direction20:46
floatinghttp://pastebin.ca/988712 Hi. I got this stuff right off the start21:33
maxamillionfloating: after you hit ctrl-d what happened?21:34
floatingit prompted the normal login.. xfce21:36
floatingand everything seems fine.. but still strange21:36
maxamillionfloating: yeah, have you run updates? it appeared that the fsck process crashed on startup (which isn't critical, but still not good)21:38
floatingi dont know much about linux, but i guess when i installed the system it tried to check if filesystem is fine, but it couldnt read that long name, which could be the name of this partition or something and it skipped it ?21:38
floatingyeah, i just installed all the 120 updates there were21:38
maxamillionwell its the UUID, and i don't see why it wasn't able to resolve21:38
maxamillionfloating: is it installed on a different computer than the one you are talking to me on right now?21:39
floatingno, im on it right now21:39
maxamillionhmmm... i was hoping you could reboot without having to sign off ... i'm curious to see if it happens after the updates21:40
floatingill try reboot now21:42
maxamillionok, i'll still be here when you get back21:42
floatingsame happened21:45
maxamillionhmmm...21:45
maxamillionthat's not good21:45
floating"please check the filesystem manually" or something was after the text also21:45
maxamillionfloating: open a terminal and type "sudo fsck" and see what it says there21:46
floatingthen when stuff started loading fast, i saw another "fail" or "failed" on the load list, and im not sure but i thought it said wrong fstype...21:46
floatingsame21:47
floating/dev/sda3: recovering journal21:48
floating/dev/sda3: clean, 96813/452480 files, 492862/903648 blocks21:48
floatingthose 2 lines comes before the "unable to resolve" line21:48
maxamillionok, so it can't resolve by uuid, but it can by device name21:48
maxamillioninteresting21:48
maxamillioni wonder if the installer probed uuid incorrectly21:48
floatingseems like others have had similar problems21:52
floatingi have bunch of other problems facing here too :)21:52
floatingor questions..21:52
floatingwell, ill do some googling:i21:53
maxamillionfloating: ok, feel free to come back if you get stuck21:54
floatinguhhm, my fstab looks weird :D21:59
floatingxubuntu has set one of my windows partitions as ext3 partitions in fstab21:59
maxamillionoh that's not good21:59
maxamillionyeah, i don't doubt there is a problem with the installer22:00
maxamillionfloating: what version are you using?22:00
floatingi took the latest xubuntu 7.something from xubuntu site22:01
oemif i executed  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade  and my os was feisty, then i should be upgrading to gutsy, correct?  i'm wondering why the files are still saying  'feisty updates'22:03
maxamillionfloating: oh ok22:04
maxamillionoem: no22:04
oemmaxamillion, here's output: After unpacking 179MB of additional disk space will be used.22:05
oemDo you want to continue [Y/n]? y22:05
oemGet:1 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty-updates/main linux-headers-2.6.20-16 2.6.20-16.35 [8120kB]22:05
maxamillionoem: apt-get dist-upgrade just pulls the latest kernel and other "dist" respective libraries/modules ... you need to change the listings in your /etc/apt/source.list from feisty to gutsy and then run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade"22:05
oemGet:2 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty-updates/main linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic 2.6.20-16.35 [842kB]22:05
oemGet:3 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty-updates/main linux-headers-generic 2.6.20.16.28.1 [24.5kB]22:05
oemGet:4 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com feisty-updates/main linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic 2.6.20-16.35 [23.8MB]22:05
oem66% [4 linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic 23456824/23.8MB 98%]22:05
maxamillionoem: yeah, that's just pulling updates for feisty22:05
oemi'm actually trying to install opera, and since i keep getting probs with it, i thought i needed to update possibly, it's telling me there are unmet dependencies22:06
oemwell, these are important updates just the same right?22:07
maxamillionoem: oh yeah, generally all updates are important :)22:08
oemi want to be up to date when stable hardy is ready.  will the update manager take me through two upgrades at that time?  feisty > gutsy > hardy?22:08
zoredacheI don't believe a feisty -> hardy upgrade is supporte or tested...22:09
oembut feisty > gutsy is, right?22:10
gaurdroyou can do a feisty-> gutsy upgrade now and when hardy comes out you can then do a gutsy-> hardy22:10
oemmaxamillion, what are the changes ezackly that i have to make to sources for that upgrade?22:11
oemdin't understand you completely when you said:  apt-get dist-upgrade just pulls the latest kernel and other "dist" respective libraries/modules ... you need to change the listings in your /etc/apt/source.list from feisty to gutsy and then run "apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade"22:12
floatingmaxamillion: by changing that one misentry ext3 to proper ntfs, it mounts the ntfs now also, and that fsck error dont appear and that "sudo fsck" dont give it either ^^ problem fixed :)22:15
floatingso it was some bad installer for fstab :)22:15
maxamillionfloating: oh, that's good to know22:19
maxamillionfloating: thanks for the info :)22:19
maxamillionoem: yeah, you might want to look into using the graphical upgrade utility to upgrade between releases ... i don't want to send you into editing the /etc/apt/sources.list until you have a better understanding of the system22:20
gaurdrooem:  something that might be worth a try is update-manager -d   it will open the update notifier but will give you the option of doing a distrobution upgrade22:23
maxamillionyeah, that thing22:27
maxamillioni couldn't remember what its called22:28
oemguys what about a quikly addable floating calendar app?  just tried to get rainlendar but some dependency unsatisfiable ...23:11
TheSheeporage...23:12
oemthesheep, will i find that in synaptic?23:13
TheSheepoem: it's inalled by default23:13
oemdon't see it anywhere on my menu23:14
TheSheepoffice->calendar23:14
oembeautiful, thanx, trying to visualise a trip itinerary and not easy without calendar23:15
* TheSheep always uses 'cal' from the terminal23:15
