homebrewciderhey there, got a new video card, did the <sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg> thing, on restart the graphic is in 800x600, seemed much better beore I did the <sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg> thing00:30
TheSheephomebrewcider: when you do it, it lets you choose the resolutions that will be available, and also to configure your monitor screen00:32
TheSheephomebrewcider: make sure you picked them correctly00:32
homebrewciderI chose relevant resolutions, nothing too extravagant00:33
homebrewciderit seems to be reverting to a "failsafe"00:33
TheSheepwhat about the monitor? it asks at some point whether to write the synch ranges to the files, it's better to answer no at that point00:33
TheSheepah00:34
TheSheepthen the driver you have chosen doesn't work for some reason00:34
TheSheepwhat card is that?00:34
homebrewciderasus en 8800gt, it just identified it as nvidia00:34
TheSheephomebrewcider: there should be a 'restricted driver manager' in your menu, under system00:35
homebrewcidertried that00:36
TheSheepdid it install the driver00:36
TheSheep?00:36
homebrewcidersays "Your hardware does not need any restricted drivers"00:36
TheSheepok, then it's not nvidia :/00:36
TheSheephomebrewcider: what does 'lspci | grep VGA' say?00:37
homebrewcider<02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0611 (rev a2)>00:38
TheSheepweird00:38
TheSheepwell, try 'sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx', this is the proprietary driver that nvidia provides00:38
homebrewciderI wasn't having this problem BEFORE I did the <sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg>00:39
homebrewcidergtting that now00:39
homebrewciderthat's finished00:41
homebrewciderlog out and back in?00:41
TheSheepnow run that reconfigure again, select the 'nvidia' driver, all defaults, and to not write the sync ranges00:41
homebrewciderok00:41
homebrewciderdid that00:43
TheSheepok, alt+ctrl+backspace will restart X, the graphical environemnt00:44
TheSheep9it will also log you out)00:44
homebrewciderok00:44
homebrewciderno, same deal, it's actually 640x48000:45
TheSheephomebrewcider: can you pastebin your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?00:47
homebrewcidersure00:47
homebrewciderhttp://pastebin.ca/98892100:48
TheSheepok, it uses driver 'nv', try using the driver 'nvidia'00:49
TheSheepis should have appeared on the list after you installed nvidia-glx00:49
homebrewciderhttp://pastebin.ca/98892700:50

TheSheepany luck?00:53
homebrewciderno00:53
TheSheepcan you also pastebin the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.last ?00:53
homebrewciderI redid the reconfigure, selected nvidia, not nv00:53

Mannequinhi01:27
Mannequinis there any easy way to generate a list of current installed (by me) software. I ask because I'm going to format in few days (and then install the about to come Ubuntu version)01:28
zoredachethere is a way to show all installed software... do a (dpkg --get-selections) in a terminal01:29
zoredachethere is probably a way (but I don't know how) to dump the apt database that records if a package was installed automatically or manually01:30
TheSheepit's in /var/lib/apt/extended_states01:30
Mannequinok, thanks01:31
Mannequinis it worth to delete hidden files (usually config files) in my user's home directory before re-installing? (I mean, to avoid conflicts, if any)01:32
TheSheepMannequin: shouldn't be any conflicts01:32
MannequinTheSheep: thanks01:33
MannequinTheSheep: you say there is a way to filter apps installed by me?01:34
zoredacheMannequin: look at that file... anything with auto-installed: 0 is a manuall install01:34
TheSheepzoredache: the ones with auto-installed:0 are not listed there, I'm afraid01:37
TheSheepso filtering it would be non-trivial01:38
zoredacheactually it should be easier that way01:38
zoredacheso something like ---   cat /var/lib/apt/extended_states | grep 'Package: ' | sed 's/Package: //' > /tmp/theautostuff  ; dpkg --get-selections | grep -v -f /tmp/theautostuff01:43

ablomenthen just open /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the text-editor of your preference (with sudo) and search for the word Driver11:12

nyn85I've been trying to install this black theme: http://www.xfce-look.org/content/show.php/My+OLD+themes?content=79038  ; but I did not do it right apparently, it does show up in the user interface settings, but blue not black and it does not show up in the window manager15:31
nyn85the file contains a lot of archives and I'm not sure whihch to put where15:32
nyn85I guess with the blue thing that I put the wrong file into it, since there's also a blue theme in th package15:33
nyn85but why wouldn't it appear in the window manager as well?15:34
TheSheepnyn85: I guess you need to unpack the NovumOs-gtk2 archive to your .themes15:35
TheSheepnyn85: the window manager theme is for metacity, so it won't work with xfce15:35
TheSheepnyn85: but the gtk theme and wallpapers will15:36
nyn85does that mean the windows will keep looking as they are now?15:36
TheSheepnyn85: the gdm theme can be installed by dragging-and-dropping the archive into the login window settings  program15:36
nyn85let's go step by step: I unpacked the Novum-file, it contains 4 more archives15:37
nyn85do all of these need to be unpacked in the .themes folder?15:38
TheSheepno, just the -gtk2 one15:39
TheSheepyes, the window borders won't change15:39
nyn85ok I unpacked that file into the .themes15:41
nyn85where do the other ones go?15:41
TheSheepit should now appear in the user interface settings15:41
nyn85yes it does15:42
TheSheepfor the gdm theme, open the settings->login window settings, and dragn-and-drop the archive into the theme list15:42
TheSheepthe third one, for metacity, is useless for xfce15:42
nyn85thats too bad15:43
nyn85what about the 4th?15:44
TheSheepI only see 315:44
TheSheep-gdm, -gtk2 and -rounded15:45
nyn85wait a sec, I'll make a list15:45
nyn85logo.png           NovumOS-GDM.tar.gz   NovumOS-Rounded.tar.gz  Walls15:46
nyn85NovumOS.cgwdtheme  NovumOS-gtk2.tar.gz  NovumOS-Splash.png15:46
nyn85see the cgwdtheme ?15:46
TheSheepah, no idea what that is :)15:47
nyn85XD15:47
TheSheepsplash won't work for xfce either15:47
TheSheepno, wait, you can set it as image15:47
TheSheepin one of the splash engines in splash settings15:47
nyn85splash means splash screen in this case?15:48
TheSheepyes, xubuntu has it normally disabled15:48
nyn85yeah I don't need that anyway15:49
homebrewcidercan someone please help me get this en8800gt card working in linux please15:49
TheSheephomebrewcider: you could try with the binary drivers from nvidia site15:49
TheSheep!nvidia15:49
ubotuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto15:49
nyn85its weird though; I got this theme from the xfce-look page, so why would there be a theme thats no use under xfce?15:50
homebrewciderdoesn't seem to want to work15:50
nyn85I mean the picture sure is pretty XD15:50
homebrewciderdid the binary thing15:50
TheSheepnyn85: well, part of it works, I guess he uploaded it to both xfce-look and gnome-look15:50
nyn85yeah but it does look quite stupid right now ^^15:51
nyn85but anyway, no I know where everything goes15:51
nyn85one last thing though: if there were an archive that would change the theme for the windows as well, what would it be named?15:52
nyn85(just to make sure the next theme I download contains everything I need)15:52
TheSheepnyn85: I guess -xfwm415:53
TheSheepnyn85: it would contain the 'themerc' file15:53
TheSheepand some pictures15:53
nyn85well then many thanks again, you've been extremely helpful15:54
homebrewciderit's late here, I'll work on this tomorow...................................15:55
floatingthis step dont work on my xubuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Japanese_Input_and_Fonts_in_Ubuntu_7.10_using_SCIM#head-0401ff0f4ac4c61dc1e3971fc2a1d333e35ed70816:20
floatingthere is no such file as 74custom-scim_startup16:21
sorenDoes seahorse-agent not ask you guys for ssh passphrases either or is it just me?18:35
TheSheepsoren: it might ask for one when it needs to get the password for your wifi, for example18:38
grotheskHi20:14
grotheskWill an upgrade from Dapper to Hardy be possible?20:15
grotheskAnd do I use update-manager in order to do so?20:15
The_kernelgrothesk: without format and reinstall, not likely.20:15
The_kernelI couldn't get to feisty from dapper20:15
grotheskOh.20:15
grotheskAre the differences bigger in xubuntu than in ubuntu or kubuntu?20:16
grotheskBecaus these two support jumping from Dapper to Hardy20:16
TheSheepjumping from dapper to hardy will be made possible -- they are both lts versions20:20
jarnosHello. Is there some dropped support of old hardware in Hardy?20:22
grotheskHm.... Is TheSheep right or is The-Kernel right? :-)20:31
initwitinstead of synaptic'ing myself into an early grave, wouldn't it be easier for me to just download a cp of gubuntu, kubuntu and any other ubuntu?20:31
The_kernelgrothesk: TheSheep is right20:36
initwitit started so simply, i just wanted to compile mc, and one thing led to another and synaptic advised that i install/upgrade 129 megs of stuff.20:38
TheSheepinitwit: why didn't you install mc from the repo?20:40
initwiti did, at first. but i like to turn off the mouse in gpm20:40
initwitso i needed to run ./configure20:41
initwitbut i do want to install a bunch of gnome stuff, so maybe i can just dl gubuntu20:44
initwitTheSheep: this is my slackware fs. when i am 'freerise' i am running xubuntu20:45
grotheskWill an upgrade from dapper to hardy be done by the official updatetool? (If there is any in xubuntu)20:49
TheSheepgrothesk: most likely20:52
