_ZeuZ_I need to place this: env WINEPREFIX="/home/zeuz/.wine" wine "C:\Archivos de programa\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe" in a symlink to be placed in /usr/bin how can I do it besides placing it into a SH script and chmod +x it?01:06
ghittsumok, new question:  I need to be able to access phpmyadmin via a web browser, can I move "/etc/phpmyadmin" or "/usr/share/phpmyadmin" (returned locations for where phpmyadmin got installed), to "/var/www/.." where my webserver is located?01:08
_ZeuZ_That would be a huge security risk01:08
_ZeuZ_just install the control manager for it01:09
ghittsumhow do I do that and what does that mean?01:09
=== haider is now known as haider__
jacob_how do i change the graphical environment desktop?01:09
_ZeuZ_Basically it means: Google before asking ^^01:09
_ZeuZ_neh01:09
_ZeuZ_just kidding01:09
jacob_for example a windows look, mac look, unix look, etc etc01:09
ghittsumyeah, I've tried looking it up, but I'm not getting far01:09
_ZeuZ_it means that if you do that, whoever creep wants to screw you, is going to have it easy...01:09
haider__install the KDE01:10
haider__and u will be able to change the desktop look01:10
haider__on GNOME u need lot of things to do so01:10
_ZeuZ_haider__: Not quite, though it's harder indeed01:11

ghittsumwhere can I go to get a vast library of support for using kubuntu over windows?  I am not feeling the community is strong enough to support dummies like me trying to escape microsoft01:11
* Jucato will try not to comment on that01:12
=== fnord_ is now known as fnord23
ghittsumwell, thanks for your time.01:12
jacob_jucato not usefull01:13
Jucatojacob_: depends on what you are really trying to do01:13
spawn57..kubuntu over windows?01:14
spawn57isn't that in alpha still?01:14
Jucato<jacob_> for example a windows look, mac look, unix look, etc etc <--- that just involves using themes and moving stuff around. a bit more complicated than normal01:14
spawn57as in kde4 on windows..01:14
Jucatospawn57: he means using Kubuntu instead of Windows01:14
spawn57oh01:15
haider__windows is hell01:15
haider__i hate it01:15
spawn57windows is alright01:15
Jucatoand we're not here to talk about Windows ;)01:15
spawn57the spamware, adware, constant nagging from software, and stuff like that annoys me01:15
haider__no it is the worse system on the earth and may be on Mars too lolz01:15
jacob_jucato i just finished installing the kubuntu-desktop package, a wizard showed up at first with the different options01:16
Jucatojacob_: ah that one? It is "kpersonalizer", it doesn't really change KDE too look like Mac or Windows etc01:16
jacob_well i changed it to a mac look and did the change with the menus at the top of the screen01:17
haider__Do u want to use windows or to use the look only ?01:17
Jucatoah right... the menu bar at the top01:17
jacob_i just want to experiment and see which one i like the best01:17
haider__you can use VMWare to install windows01:18
haider__so u can get windows inside ubuntu01:18
Jucatojacob_: kpersonalizer isn't really necessary. It just bundles up options into a wizard. but the options are available elsewhere even without kpersonalizer01:18
haider__to OS in same window01:18
Jucatohaider__: um.. that's not really what he meant01:18
haider__about the Look i want to tell you that i tried before to make something similar01:19
haider__i tried to make Mac look01:19
haider__but all the available things about this is not that good01:19
Jucatojacob_: for example, right-click on the desktop -> Configure Desktop -> Behavior page -> you wil see there the option for the menu bar at the top01:19
haider__you have something called Compiz01:20
haider__this will give you some animations of Mac01:20
spawn57and awn ..01:20
haider__but Mac keep everything for its own computers01:20
jacob_the wizard told me that i can re-run the wizard from the system menu01:21
jacob_but don't know exactly01:21
Jucatojacob_: press Alt+F2, and type in "kpersonalizer"01:21
haider__i advice you to go indeep and try to make some programming01:22
haider__i love it through programming u can make anything01:22
jacob__i think i found it, it's on appearance in the look and feel01:22
* Jucato sighs01:22
_ZeuZ_you might find superkaramba intresting too..01:22
haider__now i want programmers01:23
haider__i have some ideas01:23
Jucatojacob__: like I said, kpersonalizer just bundles up configuration options in a wizard. otherwise you can find everything it does scattered throughout KDE, like in System Settings01:23
haider__we can make something usefull01:23
LinuxGuy1234haider__: like a text editior/01:23
haider__no not text editor01:23
haider__i'm talking about something usefull01:24

_ZeuZ_Crap, I forgot what I was about to say...01:34
_ZeuZ_Oh, yeah01:34
_ZeuZ_I found a vuln in Ubuntus core...01:34
_ZeuZ_basically, the firsts seconds after KDM has started, for some weird reason, in a logged console, (being it in gnome through GDM) will cause a non-sudoer user to be granted root status through sudo -s or sudo su01:35
_ZeuZ_I'm just to lazy to report it, so somebody do it please..01:35

haider__ooooooooh iam so scared01:36
_ZeuZ_double lol01:36
_ZeuZ_actually, that sounded quite lame, but, whatever x'D01:36
timIs there an easy way to switch back from KNetworkmanager to ifup-ifdown?  I load remote servers with fstab, and I need my wireless network running at boot so they will mount.01:36
_ZeuZ_tim: you can set it to be started at boot time from Kcontrol01:36
_ZeuZ_go to network, interfaces, switch to root with the applet and then select start at boot01:37
_ZeuZ_that should do the trick01:37
NickPrestaI am in the process of upgrading to the RC and I got a couple errors about not being able to upgrade nvidia-glx-new and xserver-xorg-core. Should this pose a problem post-upgrade? Should I just run an aptitude dist-upgrade to fix the problem?01:37
_ZeuZ_Hmmm... Core Impact does not run through Wine... Intresting... gonna have to use it in a VM01:37
epimethKNetworkManager can load at boot???01:38
epimethnice01:38
_ZeuZ_NickPresta, wait for a few days until the packages migrate01:38
NickPresta_ZeuZ_: so I am without X for a few days?01:38
_ZeuZ_epimeth: no, KNetworkManger no, but it will configurate the interface to do so01:38
_ZeuZ_NickPresta: perhaps restore a previous version>01:38
timI can't usually configure my ndiswrapper drivers through there, because it always sets my key back to restricted instead of open.  I'll try though.01:38
JucatoNickPresta: #ubuntu+1 might be able to help01:38
_ZeuZ_purge the actual, and get the previous01:38
epimethoookay... why don't I just edit /etc/network/interfaces ?01:39
_ZeuZ_epimeth, That's a GUI for that ;)01:39
NickPrestaJucato: thanks. I tried the "Fil Bug Report" button but I could not launch a browser due to the upgrade.01:39
_ZeuZ_tim: you should have started there01:39
_ZeuZ_Hmmm...01:39
epimethI thought KNetworkManager if-up/down'ed... it rewrites interfaces?01:39
_ZeuZ_Add ndiswrapper to startup (chmod +x it and then move a copy of the startup script)01:40
_ZeuZ_epimeth: at least SID version does01:40
haider__cool stuffs01:40
_ZeuZ_I don't currently use Kubuntu, nor Ubuntu at all...01:40
NickPrestaI will say that the update has been painless thus far. Approx. 1500 packages upgraded and/or downloaded and configured in just under an hour. :D01:40
epimethSID?01:40
_ZeuZ_I'm a Debian SID user,  and since Ubuntu is based upon it with several patches by Canonical for stability I thought I might help01:41
haider__i used debian but i faced problem with wireless01:42
Jucatoepimeth: he meant "Sid" :)01:42
haider__he connect times and not another01:42
epimethoh... Sid... not SID :-)01:42
epimethyea, I got that :-p01:42
_ZeuZ_haider__: Debian is "harder" to configure. Nothing that you can't solve googling01:42
_ZeuZ_hehe01:42
_ZeuZ_just needed to emphazise it01:42
_ZeuZ_(or whatever emphasize it's written like :P)01:42
haider__it is cool i want to use it01:43
epimethI don't think its especially harder... just more time consuming... default conf files tend to be empty in debian, but with examples in ubuntu01:43
timActually, I found etch easier to script, because it was more predictable.01:43
_ZeuZ_well, that depends01:43
haider__i started linux with Fedora Core 501:43
_ZeuZ_as tim said, etch is fully commented, stable, and compleately documented01:43
haider__actually it was not that good for me01:43
_ZeuZ_hehe I started my way with Red Hat 6 xD01:44
_ZeuZ_using the native NASH red hat core01:44

izzybI was playing music via amarok and it finished the song it was on at the time of the hang, but wouldn't continue to the next08:40
cpk1JackWinter: does the hdd show up as mounted anywhere in mount? secondly, 8.04 doesnt release until tomorrow =)08:40
izzybpings stop responding also08:40
izzybI'm trying to figure out if it's a hardware driver issue (suspect video) or related to compiz08:42
JackWintercpk1: i know about 8.04. here is output from mount: /dev/sdb2 on /media/Mac type hfsplus (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal) and /dev/sdb3 on /media/Untitled 2 type hfsplus (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal)08:43
JackWintercpk1: if i unmount from konqueror thez no longer show in the mount command.08:44

Boohbahvenik: do you know which package you installed to break it? maybe dbus?19:52
venikDutions-- I am not sure what you mean by a manual mount: I tried mounting with the mount -a from the terminal, and also using mountman.  Neither worked19:52
dwidmannI think I'll test the x86_64 alternate, but I can only pull off that kind of download in the middle of the night :(19:52
venikI am told that the /dev/sdd1 does not exist19:53
_ZeuZ_venik: cat /prov/partitions19:53
Boohbahvenik: i remember my drive names changed recently too.. that is probably the same thing that broke your external drive19:53
stdindwidmann: if you want to make sure any issues get attention, there's nothing stopping you from sending them to the kubuntu-devel mailing list too ;)19:53
_ZeuZ_venik: cat /proc/partitions and check the name of the device there19:54

ScorpKingstdin: will it not show up in /dev/disk/by-<xxx>?19:59
_ZeuZ_ScorpKing, it should..19:59
stdinScorpKing: normally yes, but if fdisk isn't showing it then probably not19:59
ScorpKingstdin: ah ok. dmesg it is then20:00

If you would like to make Konqueror your default file manager again, go to Konqueror - Settings menu - Configure Konqueror - File Associations and change the association for inode/directory and inode/system_directory to Konqueror at the top rather than Dolphin.20:08

kkskakdhi, can i recover anything from a ntfs partition i had before installing kubuntu over it?23:18
sponzorwhen will be the final version relesaed?23:18
kmorrisseyhi everyone, need some help with getting video to play within firefox, im new to linux23:19
kkskakdi tried testdisk and it found that ntfs after an advanced search but it's flagged D (deleted) and when i do P(list files) it says it's corrupt or something23:19
DirkGentlykkskakd: you may need Windows recovery tools for that23:19
kkskakdDirkGently, like do you think it's possible to recover anything even if the partition was deleted, kubuntu made a new one and formatted it with ext3?23:20
kkskakdi don't want to reinstall windows, just need something i had on that ntfs23:21
DirkGentlykkskakd: did you finish the install?23:21
kkskakdDirkGently, yes my pc is running kubuntu right now23:22
kkskakdDirkGently, i understand that after an high format the data is not lost, just the addresses to it23:22
DirkGentlyI'd say you've lost all data then23:22
DirkGentlyyes, but you've written into it as well23:22
kkskakdbut testdisk ..23:23
kkskakdfind's the partition23:23
kkskakdany forensic tools?23:23
kmorrisseyI had it working earlier, but then run some command in konnsole which asked me one step at a time to choose my default.  Something like press enter to leave as default or select a number of the item i want, please help23:23
kkskakdDirkGently, so you say it's impossible?23:24
DirkGentlykkskakd: at the very least it'll require a lot of work23:24
kkskakdDirkGently, i have time plenty23:24
kkskakdDirkGently, it's just i never had to do it, and im soo lost23:25
kkskakdDirkGently, and i don't need a full working partition, i don't need to boot it, just to recover some files23:25
DirkGentlykkskakd: have you looked around for forensic tools?23:25
kkskakdDirkGently, yes, and i tried testdisk, and it find's it but it can't restore it23:26
dwidmann:O not even testdisk can hack it? that's pretty bad23:27
kkskakdyeah..23:27
DirkGentlykkskakd: what is the data you need to recover? text files?23:27
kkskakdyes23:28
DirkGentlyplain text, not word docs?23:28
kkskakdwell word i guess23:28
kkskakdand openoffice23:28
kmorrisseydoes anyone no the command I might have used to change my default flash player, plugins etc, I used konsole but cant remember what I typed23:28
ISS_StudentIs this the channel for questions on 8.04?23:29
kkskakdhmm i guess it's impossible23:29
dwidmannmaybe something like sleuthkit would have the tools you need, but I've never tried  to use it before23:30
kkskakdeven those who sess recovery tools advise not to write anything on that disk you wish to recover23:30
stdinISS_Student: until it's released you want #ubuntu+123:30
kkskakd*sell23:30
dwidmannkkskakd: can probably get a usb drive on the cheap and dump the files onto it23:31
kkskakdi have one23:31
dwidmannkkskakd: then you wouldn't be writing anything onto the disk you're recovering from, you'd be writing onto the usb drive instead :)23:32
kmorrissey#firefox23:33
kkskakddwidmann, uh .. it's like this: I had an windows xp on a ntfs partition that took all the disk. Then i get kubuntu, install it (erased that ntfs partition, created ext3 , formatted ext3, installed files) and i am using kubuntu now for the past 10 days23:34
dwidmannkkskakd: and?23:34
kkskakdstill hope to recover anything from that ntfs ?23:35
dwidmannkkskakd: you're probably out of luck, you've already overwritten a lot23:35
kkskakdyes..23:35
kkskakdbut maybe not what i need23:35
DirkGentlydwidmann: that's what we surmised :)23:35
kkskakdmaybe that one file i need it's there23:36
kkskakd:)23:36
kkskakdwho knows23:36
kkskakdbut i never did anything like this so i don't know what the steps are, not even what to look for23:36
kkskakdi googled for it, and it showed testdisk for recovering deleted partitions23:37
dwidmannkkskakd: seems you've learned lesson #1 about computer data: backup backup backup backup23:37
kkskakdhaha23:37
kkskakdyes23:37
DirkGentlykkskakd: take it to the police and tell them you suspect it's got bomb-making instructions on it23:38
kkskakdi don't know..23:39
kkskakdmaybe chind porn23:39
dwidmannlol23:39
kkskakdand how do they recover even burnt harddisks?23:40
dwidmannkkskakd: expensive hardware probing23:40
pietrohelp kicker kde4?23:41
dwidmannpietro: kicker doesn't exist in kde4, it was replaced by plasma23:41
kkskakdanyway just downloaded insert live cd (from inside security) and it has some forensic tools, i'll just boot it and see if i can do anything23:42
kkskakdthanks guys23:42
kkskakdbye23:42
dwidmanngood luck kkskakd23:42
