boolkajust installed 8.04  on laptop, it only uses 3/4 of the screen? Is there any way to fix it?00:03
TheSheepboolka: most possibly it thinks you have some smaller monitor connected00:04
TheSheepboolka: and scales the panels to fit in that monitor00:04
boolkaok00:04
boolkahow do i fix it?00:04
TheSheepwhat outputs does the 'xrandr' command list?00:05
boolkasec00:05
TheSheepif it lists something like 'TVOUT', you can do 'xrandr --output TVOUT --off' and see if it helps00:07
boolka2TheSheep:  can i msg you the paste?00:07
TheSheep!pastebin00:07
ubotupastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic)00:07
boolka2http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/64292/00:08
zutWhy does the Xubuntu site say that the new 8.10 release is supported until 2012 (i.e. 4 years)? I thought LTS versions are only supported for 3 years?00:09
TheSheepboolka2: do you have anything connected to the vga-0? an external monitor screen?00:09
boolka2yes00:10
boolka2my backlight is broken and thats the only way i could see00:10
boolka2brb00:10
TheSheepboolka2: then disable the laptop's screen00:10
TheSheepboolka2: with 'xrandr --output LVDS --off'00:11
TheSheepyou can also disable it in xorg.conf, but I'm not sure how, there are some posts on the forum about that00:12
PsynoKhi0is brasero 0.6.1 reknown for not properly verifying disc integrity?00:14
TheSheepno idea, you could search the bugs00:14
PsynoKhi0found this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/198030 but input varies00:15
=== ubuntu__ is now known as vidd
ubotuLaunchpad bug 198030 in brasero "brasero does not check disc integrity right" [Undecided,Incomplete]00:15
viddanyone know how to format a hard drive via live cd so i can boot and add the drive to my system?00:16
TheSheepvidd: there is no gparted on the livecd?00:17
viddwhen i ran gparted from tty, it was all messed up00:17
TheSheepfun00:17
TheSheepyou can always run mkfs.whatever00:18
viddTheSheep, what i want to do is remove all the partitions on /dev/hdc and make it on 80gig partition00:23
TheSheepvidd: use fdisk then00:24
TheSheepfdisk /dev/hdc00:24
TheSheepvidd: note that it doesn't format, it only creates partitions00:24
boolka2TheSheep: thanks, it worked. Do i have to do it every time I connect it to external monitor?00:25
boolka2and what does LVDs stand for?00:25
TheSheepLVDS is the laptop's built-in LCD screen00:25
ere4siparted is the command line version of gparted - it will gormat - man parted for help00:25
ere4si*format00:26
boolka2Ah i see00:26
TheSheepboolka2: you can disable LVDS in xorg.conf, just every graphics card driver uses different options for that00:26
boolka2TheSheep:  how do i go about activating the svideo?00:26
TheSheepboolka2: I have an intel card and I had to disable my tvout, because it thought it is connected and wans't using the whole screen00:27
TheSheepboolka2: connect something to svideo and do 'xrandr --output S-video --auto'00:27
boolka2I got an ati mobility radeon 920000:28
boolka2okay let me try00:28
TheSheepboolka2: no idea about atis00:28
KiFka:D00:32
KiFkahallo00:32
TheSheephello KiFka00:32
boolkahow to switch back from svideo TheSheep00:34
boolka?00:34
TheSheepjust disable it with -off00:35
TheSheep--off00:35
TheSheepand enable others with --auto00:35
boolkahmm00:38
boolkawell it didnt work00:38
boolkanothing appeared on my tv00:39
TheSheepdoes the 'xrandr' show S-video connected?00:39
boolkai cant check00:39
TheSheep?00:40
boolkawhen i turn on svideo , my monitor shuts off00:40
TheSheepthat's weird00:40
boolkanothing appears on tv00:40
TheSheepit should display on all outputs simultaneusly just fine :/00:41
boolkasvideo and vga?00:41
TheSheepyeah00:41
TheSheepmaybe this is something specific to your card or driver00:41
TheSheepbut then it should at least display something on the tv00:41
TheSheepgotta go to bed, good luck with that, alt+ctrl+backspace restarts X in case you mess somehting00:42

manuel__can someone say besides resources, why xubuntu is better than ubuntu ?02:58
xjdeni have tried all 3 (x, u and k) and i like Xubuntu the best02:59
manuel__homebrewcider: I had that problem too when I tried xfce yesterday02:59
xjdenits easier to use (i think)02:59
xjdenits simpler02:59
Stroganoffhomebrewcider, login, enable your desktop, logout with "save this session"02:59
homebrewciderah ok02:59
homebrewciderthanks for the envy tip the other day stroganoff02:59
manuel__xjden: what about ati driver problems, is it the same?02:59
homebrewciderworked a treat02:59
Stroganoffglad to now03:00
Stroganoffuninstall the driver before upgrading to hardy03:00
homebrewcidercould not have been simpler to implement03:00

Stroganoffyep ;)03:01
Stroganoffdebian or sidux then03:01

homebrewciderah ok03:02

Stroganoffno03:03
Stroganoffubuntu is the best you can get in most ways03:03
manuel__I'm just sick that the ati restricted drivers never work. .. I was so optimistic with the coming of hardy03:03
Stroganoffmanuel__ they work for some people ;)03:04

Stroganoffthey are doing some nice work as well03:05
manuel__do you know if i can upgrade online to the next version like ubuntu does?03:05

homebrewcideron login I mean03:10
manuel__Stroganoff: would you believe me that, my xorg.conf is empty???03:11

Stroganoffso you didnt use tab :p03:14
manuel__Stroganoff: no, I blindly trusted you03:19
manuel__And why exactly a depth of 16?03:19
Stroganoffmanuel__ because theres 24 and 1603:20

SionideProdoc81, i'd recommend backing everything up and doing a fresh install.. because it looks like you'd have to dist-upgrade to 7.10, then again up to 8.04 if that's even possible... it's likely things would break :S but i'm no expert.. just making an educated guess from what i read on http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades12:27

leftStandingi haven't encountered this while using regular ubuntu, i verified the iso against the md5 hash and that seems to match up13:32
ere4siI've never seen a "try xubuntu" option - where did you get the iso from?13:33

Ultraputzi upgraded from gutsy to hardy, and use LUKS / LVM. Upon reboot, i find that it asks for LUKS password, but will not unlock the new system15:05
Ultraputzi assume grub's menu did not get updated to reflect the new system, but i can't get it at it.15:05

TheSheepbut I guess it wouldn't have access to the encrypted files15:12
Ultraputzif this is locked out, it would be very, very bad.15:13
TheSheepotoh grub must have a way to read them somehow...15:14
Ultraputzi assume it's grub because during the upgrade process, it asked me whether or not to keep or replace the grub menu15:14

TheSheepI just don't knw any15:14

JeahI'm having a weird Window Manager problem in Xubuntu Hardy.  Xfce4-terminal is opening without window decorations.  It has the right shape, but instead of the title bar, frame, close button, etc it is just solid black.  I can click where the buttons should be and they work, but they're not visible.  Window decorations on all my other apps (at least the ones I've used so far) have been fine.  I just tried re-downloading and re-installing t21:38
HACKhalo2i had to manually update my kernal this morning22:42
