KillerOrcahello00:00
PsynoKhi0hi00:00
KillerOrcaok so where do I go to change that?00:00
Odd-rationalealbuntu: gksudo is graphical sudo for starting graphical apps with root permision00:00
quitttanyone here having problems with displaying other devices of desktop???00:00
KillerOrcaother devices?00:00
Odd-rationalealbuntu: sudo is fine for just terminal stuff. nano, vi, etc.00:00
quitttKillerOrca, I used to had in my older version of Ubuntu all my other partitions mounted on my desktop00:01
quitttactually they do not appear anymore...00:01
quitttsince I've updated it...00:01
KillerOrcaI see what you mean now00:01
Odd-rationalegenerally speaking, gksudo is now being recccomended as the norm for starting graphical apps with root permissions.00:01
KillerOrcaI only have the one partition so no experience with that00:01
PsynoKhi0quittt: have you checked your fstab?00:01
quitttPsynoKhi0, everything is mounted...00:02
quitttPsynoKhi0, actually I'm listening from music by mpd, which are on these partitions hehe00:02
KillerOrcaso when I set my depth to 16 instead of 24 do I have to restart anything?00:04
albuntuthesheep, i did alt/f2, and a little 'run' box came up.  then i input sudo mousepad /etc/X11/xorg.conf , and nothing happent.00:04
KillerOrcano no00:04
KillerOrcainput xterm00:04
PsynoKhi0quittt: well, I would check the fstab nonetheless :) compare the UUID of the partitions with the output from "sudo vol_id -u <partition>"00:04
KillerOrcathen the command00:04
albuntui don't think i have nano on my machine00:05
Odd-rationalealbuntu: you should00:05
PsynoKhi0also, if you had anything with /dev/hd* now everthing goes under /dev/sd* afaik00:05
Odd-rationalealbuntu: try "which nano" in terminal00:05
Stroganofflol00:06
Odd-rationalealbuntu: nano is a terminal app, you won't find it in the menus...00:06
KillerOrcauh oh00:06
KillerOrcathink he went to the crashy terminal00:06
quitttoh, it is not HDA anymore00:06
quitttit is now SDA00:06
PsynoKhi0yes00:06
Stroganoffxfce-terminal crashes with defaultdepth 24 on some video chips00:07
quitttthat's not nice00:07
KillerOrcareally?00:07
Odd-rationaleit was sda in gutsy, no?00:07
Stroganoffreally00:07
quitttno00:07
KillerOrcaI heard is was a problem with the alternate CD install00:07
JeahHACKhalo2: Hey, sorry but I was away from this window for a while doing other stuff.  Anyway, yeah, I tried changing the theme and the window manager style and neither made a difference.  It's so weird that it's just the terminal that's doing it.00:08
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: getting anywhere with your issue?00:08
KillerOrcawell I just need to know what to do once I change the value from 24 to 1600:09
=== gnomefre1k is now known as gnomefreak
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: restart X server (nice way: log out/restart, hardc0re 1337 yo way: ctrl alt backspace00:11
KillerOrcaok00:12
JeahCan anybody help me with a weird window manager problem in Xubuntu Hardy?  Xfce4-terminal is opening without window decorations.  It has the right shape, but instead of the title bar, frame, close button, etc it is just solid black.  I can click where the buttons should be and they work, but they're not visible.  Window decorations on all my other apps (at least the ones I've used so far) have been fine.  Compositing is off and I've tried00:12
KillerOrcaa bit faster but still sluggish overall00:16
KillerOrcaand my cpu usage is still spiking to 10000:16
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: ok let's try the following, go to your settings window00:17
KillerOrca1 sec00:17
KillerOrcastill closing other windows00:18
KillerOrcaoh and albuntu it is alt-f2 then enter 'xterm' then hit run00:18
KillerOrcaok there00:19
albuntuthesheep, sorry i got knocked off.  i tryed alt/f2 and input sudo mousepad /etc/X11/xorg.conf  and nothing happent.  then i tried it again and checked 'run in terminal' and of course, i crashed00:19
KillerOrcait is alt-f2 enter 'xterm' and run, not run in terminal00:19
albuntuKillerOrca: oic, said the blind man00:20
albuntu:(  i try again00:20
KillerOrcasettings manager window Psynokhi0?00:20
PsynoKhi0applications > settings > settings manager (not using english version, approximate translation)00:22
PsynoKhi0TheSheep: w3m looks fun :D00:22
KillerOrcaok I am there00:22
albuntuok, so i just change the 24 to a 16 under section 'screen'; default screen?  then save under file?00:23
KillerOrcathat's what i was told for something else00:25
KillerOrcaand it solves the terminal problem00:26
albuntuafter i 'save' do i just x out?00:26
Odd-rationalealbuntu: in nano?00:26
albuntuno, i think i in mousepad00:27
Odd-rationalealbuntu: ctrl+s == save00:27
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: oops sry, I was browsing :) then get to the windows manager00:27
albuntunot the save that appears under 'file' menu?00:28
PsynoKhi0and choose the advanced tab,00:28
KillerOrcaok there00:28
PsynoKhi0untick "draw content while dragging" and "draw content while rezising"00:28
Odd-rationalealbuntu: same00:28
PsynoKhi0resizing*00:28
albuntuOdd-rationale: and then to exit, just 'x' out?00:29
Odd-rationalealbuntu: yes00:29
albuntuOdd-rationale: do i need to restart x to test?00:30
KillerOrcawell moving windows is faster now00:30
KillerOrcabut launching new apps is still processor intensive00:30
Odd-rationalealbuntu: yes00:30
KillerOrcadon't see how you are swimming along with 500 Mhz00:30
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: well yeah00:30
PsynoKhi0KillerOrca: that's pretty subjective I guess :)00:30

KillerOrcadoes anyone know how to make it so desktop isn't the default starting place in terminal?01:57
floatingwhat u mean02:03
KillerOrcawhen I open up a terminal and type 'ls' I get this:02:04
floatingisnt it /home/user02:04
KillerOrcaAzureus Downloads  Desktop  Examples  torrentflux_2.3  useradd.sh02:04
floatingthats /home/user/ not /home/user/Desktop02:05
floatingtype pwd02:05
KillerOrcayeah so when I need to navigate files I have to go back up a directory02:05
floatingi dont know where to adjust that02:05
floatingi would first look in /etc/inittab02:06
KillerOrcasays /home/user02:06
floatingits an interesting bit of knowledge to know where and how to tweak the default setting02:07
floatingim not on linux now so cant check... maybe would sometime02:07
floatingtry find out02:07
KillerOrca/etc/inittab not there02:08
floatingye... maybe theres a hint for a place where to look next02:08
floatingi donno :)_ mabe not... i dono much02:08
floatingbut hopefully someone else reads this discussion02:09
floatingi know someone here has better answers02:09
floatingor many02:09
KillerOrcayeah I'm searching02:10
floatingi dont know though why would you like to change02:11
floatingwhere would you like it to be at first02:11
KillerOrcawell all those places, Desktop and examples are dead ends02:13
KillerOrcato actually do things I have to go up a directory to /home02:13
floatingusually theres nothing in /home other than /user02:13
floatingor other users02:13
floatingwhat would you like to see02:14
floatingtry ls -lah02:15
floatingall your installs are hidden02:15
floatingrangers!02:16
KillerOrcawell I have a directory with files that i stream02:16
floating4-4 !02:16
KillerOrcastarting there would be nice02:16
floatingiv02:17
floatingic02:17
floatingyou could make a script with 3 lines of text, then make a shortcut for it on the panel or desktop, and when you click it opens up a terminal in that dir... or i would try if i had to get it and no other way02:19
floatingargh, my keyboard cant type the alt-302:20
floatingi get £02:20
floating!£/bin/sh02:20
ubotuSorry, I don't know anything about bin/sh - try searching on http://ubotu.ubuntu-nl.org/factoids.cgi02:20
KillerOrcawell I think in my bash profile I can change some stuff02:21
KillerOrcaor somewhere02:21
floating1st line !#/bin/sh  2nd line /some/xfce-terminal 3rd line cd streamdir/   then save file and try run it02:24
KillerOrcayeah, I'll mess with that stuff, thx02:25
floatingtry that.. only need to find path to xfce terminal02:25
floating#!/bin/sh even02:32
floating:o)02:32
KillerOrcastill googling02:34
KillerOrcabut I am not too worried02:34
KillerOrcausually I never close the terminals02:34
KillerOrcabut it is annoying when cd ~ takes me to /home/user02:35
leftStandin1hi, i'm having a bit of difficulty installing xubuntu 8.0402:56
leftStandin1i've checked the md5 hash and its correct02:57
KillerOrcafirst time installing?02:58
leftStandin1no, i've been using linux for awhile... i am using the beta release right now02:59
KillerOrcaso are you trying to upgrade or do a fresh install?02:59
leftStandin1a fresh install02:59
leftStandin1i've been burning the image using ubuntu's built in mechanism (brasero)02:59
KillerOrcawhy not upgrade?02:59
KillerOrcayou burn it as an image right>03:00
leftStandin1yep, right click and burn as image03:00
leftStandin1i've created the ubuntu beta release using cdrdao and that works03:01
leftStandin1i'm wondering if there's a flag or something that brasero isn't setting on the cd03:01
KillerOrcaif the md5s match and you burn as image then it is possible that it isn't03:03
leftStandin1i'm sure others have tried the xubuntu image, right?03:03
KillerOrcadid you try the check cd for defects option?03:04
leftStandin1xubuntu 8.04 image03:04
leftStandin1at the CD boot menu, if i try any of of the options (try xubuntu, test for defects, etc) it leads to my laptop locking up03:04
leftStandin1the only thing that works is the three finger restart03:04
leftStandin1i'm really looking for a confirmation that someone else can install xubuntu 8.04 using the images downloadable from the site03:05
KillerOrcawell I did a command line upgrade03:06
leftStandin1thats not the same as using the image from the site to boot03:07
KillerOrcaI know03:07
KillerOrcajust letting you know that I am not what you're looking for03:07
leftStandin1cool03:07
leftStandin1anyone else in the room give it a shot?03:08
HACKhalo2three finger restart?03:09
leftStandin1ctrl+alt+del03:09
HACKhalo2ah03:09
leftStandin1that still works03:09
HACKhalo2i thought it was that03:09
leftStandin1otherwise i would have to hold down the power button and wait for it to power off03:09
leftStandin1have you tried the cd image?03:10
HACKhalo2no, i updated via Synaptics03:10
HACKhalo2the beta worked fine03:10
leftStandin1yeah the beta worked fine for me too (ubuntu beta), and thats what i used to temporarily make my system work again03:11
HACKhalo2ah03:11
HACKhalo2upgrade from that03:12
leftStandin1i could03:13
leftStandin1but i'm concerned about the image03:14
leftStandin1i want to find out of the image is bad, my cd-writer is on the fritz, or the burning software is unreliable03:15
leftStandin1i would greatly appreciate it if someone downloaded the image, burned it, and then tried booting from it03:16
leftStandin1no need to install or anything03:16
leftStandin1just get past the CD boot menu03:16
HACKhalo2if i had a blank CD-R, i would03:16
leftStandin1i can give you 103:16
leftStandin1i have a whole stack03:16
HACKhalo2how? lol03:16
leftStandin1lol wait for teleporters03:17
HACKhalo2lol03:17
KillerOrcawhich image are you using?03:26
leftStandin1xubuntu 8.04 desktop i38603:27
KillerOrcaregular or alternate?03:27
leftStandin1regular03:28
KillerOrcaok03:28
KillerOrcaI'm going to get this off ftp://lug.bu.edu/pub/distro/ubuntu/ to avoid the swamp03:29
KillerOrcawait no03:29
KillerOrcadoesn't have xubunut03:29
leftStandin1i can send it to you03:32
leftStandin1well not as fast...03:32
leftStandin1the french server is open03:32
leftStandin1the usa site doesn't have xubuntu yet03:33
leftStandin1the torrent is fast too03:33
KillerOrcayeah I know03:33
KillerOrcathat is what I'm doing03:33
HACKhalo2can i uninstall the 2.6.22.-14-generic and the 2.6.24-12-generic kernel images?03:35
HACKhalo2will it affect the system at all if i have the newest one installed?03:37
KillerOrcawhat is your file size?03:37
HACKhalo2me?03:37
leftStandin1544.503:38
leftStandin1MN03:38
leftStandin1MB03:38
KillerOrcano03:38
HACKhalo2that seems kinda small03:38
KillerOrcadon't know anything about kernels sorry03:38
HACKhalo2imho03:38
leftStandin1HACKhalo2: thats a good question to put to a test machine03:39
HACKhalo2if i had one03:39
KillerOrcais there a list of md5sums somewhere? I had to go to TPB to even find a xubuntu tracker03:39
leftStandin1yeah i have the list03:39
leftStandin1HACKhalo2: as long as the boot loader is using the most current image there shouldn't be any problem, but the kernel size itself is pretty small so theres not too much benefit to removing them03:41
HACKhalo2ok03:42
leftStandin1its also a good idea to keep more than 1 kernel around that you know is working03:42
HACKhalo2just woundering03:42
KillerOrcaI should be able to let you know in 15 minutes if the dl keeps up03:44
leftStandin1sweet03:45
KillerOrcamight as well give me the md5 you got now03:52
KillerOrcaonly a min left03:53
leftStandin1i private messaged the md5 sums03:53
leftStandin1did you get them?03:53
KillerOrcathis is like time 2 on the irc for me03:53
KillerOrcaso I don't know how03:54
leftStandin1oh cool, thanks for immediately helping out!03:54
KillerOrcayeah well I still need the # :P03:54
leftStandin1http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/64460/03:55
leftStandin1they are there03:55
KillerOrcasweet they match03:56
KillerOrcatime to burn03:56
HACKhalo2burn it at 4x03:56
KillerOrcaI just started it at 10x before you told me03:57
leftStandin1it doesn't matter as long as the drive can handle it03:57
HACKhalo24x makes the disc work a ton better03:57
leftStandin1i looked at the underside of my disks - comparing it from my ubuntu beta disk and the xubuntu 8.04 disks and i noticed a really irregular pattern03:57
HACKhalo2less bit degrasion03:57
KillerOrcathat might be it then03:57
leftStandin1yeah, the inner most circle is filled in, then a great circular expanse of not burned, and then a thin strip of burned03:58
KillerOrcabut I am at 20% burn so in about 8 min we will know03:58
leftStandin1yeah i'm interested to know what pattern you get and if it actually works03:58
HACKhalo2try burning it slower03:58
HACKhalo24x or 2x03:59
KillerOrcawell I had it started already03:59
leftStandin1i tried my most recent at 4x03:59
leftStandin1didn't matter03:59
leftStandin1they are all the same03:59
KillerOrcathe program I am using won't let it adjust during03:59
HACKhalo2oh03:59
HACKhalo2try powerISO03:59
leftStandin1plus the ubuntu beta i burned at the fastest setting my drive can handle and it works fine03:59
KillerOrcaI grabbed the program in the ubuntu tutorial04:00
KillerOrcaI have sooo much software on my machine04:00

Odd-rationalemikubuntu: did you run a "sudo apt-get clean" yet?06:59
mikubuntuno, i'm not familiar with that command, what will it do?07:00
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: it will clean your apt cache of previously downloaded packages07:00
Odd-rationaleit is safe07:00
Odd-rationaleonly when you reinstall a package, you will have to download again. which is ok07:00
mikubuntudisk usage says i have used 10.9 of 12 gb of file sys capacity07:01

mikubuntuok, going back to 'one' now07:10
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: after that, do "sudo localepurge" in terminal07:11
mikubuntuok, wait, so DON't go to synaptic for the localepurge?07:15
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: have you installed localepurge yet?07:15
mikubuntui don't know/don't think so07:16
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: you can install it anyway you want.07:16
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: just be sure, in the configuring step, to use SPACE not enter to select you locale. Let me know if you need any help there07:16
mikubuntuterminal is fine as long as i lknow command line  ... sudo apt-get install localepurge ?07:17
Odd-rationaleyep07:17
mikubuntuyou keep saying 'just be sure' , like, beware the ides of march, it's kind of escarry! :(07:18
Odd-rationaleif you did enter, you would end up with no locales... :(07:18
mikubuntuoh, my :P07:18
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: you only need to select (with space) the top level locale07:19
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: e.g., for en (you would want to have english along with any other atlest) just select en. en* is not needed07:19
mikubuntuoh, my, again.  there is A LOT of little initials in that list; how do i know which ones to select??07:21
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: got that?07:21
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: what languages you want?07:21
mikubuntufor language support?  just english on this machine, maybe spanish (costa rica) as well07:22
mikubuntuoh, all those are just language support???07:22
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: then just select, with SPACE en and es07:22
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: yeah, lanuage packs for man pages.07:22
mikubuntuok, won't let me select en, but futher down the list is en_US, is that the one i bloody want? :)07:24
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: why won't let you select en?07:24
mikubuntuexcuse me, bloody well want07:24
mikubuntuno, it skips over en07:24
mikubuntucursor wont stop there07:24
Odd-rationaleok. I guess that will be ok...07:26
mikubuntuand won't let me stop at es_CR either, but will go to es_CR.UTF-807:26
Odd-rationaleare you sure you can't select it?07:26
mikubuntuya, tried to click into it no avail07:26
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: with mouse?07:27
Odd-rationalemikubuntu: try with arrow key07:27

Prodocyesterday a system upgrade from 6.10 to 7.10 didn't go completely as it should have. Before I started the upgrade it told me some packages where not supported any longer and I was going to be asked to remove them after the upgrade. This never happened though. How do I find out which packages they where?10:11
vistakillertry to find them from synaptic10:15
Prodochow?10:17
vistakillermust be some options for package that is not needing anymore10:18
Prodocif I go to Status I get a list in the 'Installed (local or obsolote)' section10:18
vistakillerwhat say the list?10:18
Prodocnothing special, that's the problem. No different markings or something for some packages10:19
vistakillerit seems that you dont have packege tha you dont need10:20
Prodocthe 'Fix broken packages' option doesn't do anything either though starting up the system doesn't go completely fluid10:21
Prodocwhat about the 'Not Installed (residential config)' section in synaptic? what's that about? it does give me a list of packages10:22
Prodocshould anything be done with them?10:22

Prodocdarn, it's going to fast for me to make a note of10:34
ProdocThere's no movement in the progress bar under the Xubuntu logo for a long time at first. Instead of After that I'm presented with a terminal view listing the start-up sequence. 'udevd-event[2118] .... abnormal exit' is the first line10:35
Prodocafter a couple of items it frozen at '[206.080000] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0f.0[A] -> Link [LNKC] ....' for a long time and it results in 'failed'10:38

gabkdllywell, the X session pictures remains on screen, but the mouse will not move, neither does the hard drive seem to be doing anything, nor can I kill X with Alt-Ctrl-Backspace, nor change to other consoles with Alt-Ctrl-F115:24
gabkdllymy first instinct is to remove my home dir to wipe old configurations15:24
TheSheepthis is only after you log in?15:25
TheSheepmaybe try adding a new user first15:25
TheSheepandsee if it happens too15:26
gabkdllyyes, gdm does not pose a problem15:26
gabkdllyok, I will try the new user. If I suddenly dissappear it is because of another crash ;)15:28
gabkdllythe new user crashed even faster than the old one, there was not even enough time to draw the panels15:32
gabkdllythe power buttons seems to work, I was able to power down without resorting to the reset button15:33
suriroany clue in ~/.xsession-errors  ?15:34
suriroor /var/log/Xorg.0.log maybe15:34
gabkdllyXorg.0.log says "Configured Mouse", and then "AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch"15:43
floatinghi. i installed xubuntu. windows partition did not get detected into grub. I wonder how i should try add it. i know it should be /dev/sda615:43
floatingbut i need that hd(0,0) info it seems15:44
gabkdlly.xsession-errors says "WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported"15:46
TheSheep/dev/sda6 is hd(0,5)15:46
gabkdllyon the first reboot after the upgrade, there were some messages about input/output errors to the hard drive. Upon rebooting again, those messages went away15:46
floatingTheSheep: i see. should i just copy some random menu.lst windows xp entry from google and replace with hd(0,5) ?15:47
floatingor is there some other things to take into account15:47
TheSheepo, it should work15:48
TheSheepthere is not much to it15:48
gabkdllydoes .xsession-errors get rewritten on every login?15:52
gabkdllyI have not yet tried any of the failsafe options15:55
floating$ sudo mousepad /etc/rc.local15:55
floatingsudo: timestamp too far in the future: Apr 26 20:22:12 200815:55
floatingwhen i installed xubuntu and chose location: helsinki, it had a wrong time set, and the time couldnt be set manually15:56
gabkdllyI will give failsafe Gnome a try15:56
gabkdllywish me luck15:56
TheSheepgabkdlly: good luck15:56
surirogabkdlly: stop gdm, then start xfce from console15:56
TheSheepfloating: I guess you either need to wait for some hours or do a restart15:57
floatingseems like sudo -K worked.. read from forum :o15:58
floating-K  kill users timestamp :oo weird options15:58
TheSheepcool, gotta remember that15:58
HACKhalo2is it possible to stick Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Kubuntu on one disc, using a CD bootloader?16:08
TheSheepHACKhalo2: they won't fit on a single cd16:11
HACKhalo2well, a striped down, no install version16:11
HACKhalo2im trying to make a Try Linux disc for my hobby im doing16:12
TheSheepthen yes, it should be doable, you can have xubuntu, kubuntu and ubuntu all at once in a single system16:12
TheSheepso you don't even need to do it with the bootloader16:13
HACKhalo2to swich between them i mean16:13
TheSheepI think there is a nice gui application for customizing livecd16:13
TheSheepyou can switch at the logjn screen16:13
TheSheeplogin16:13
HACKhalo2really?16:13
TheSheepyeah, they all use the same base16:13
HACKhalo2because that will cut down on costs greatly16:13
gabkdllywell, failsafe Terminal mode crashed as well as soon as I tried to start firefox16:16
gabkdllyfailsafe gnome crashed all by itself16:16
gabkdllyalso, sometimes it will crash at the splash screen, at various stages of the booting process16:16
surirogabkdlly: do you have ATI graphics card?16:18
gabkdllysuriro: nope, Savage integrated in the board16:21
HACKhalo2Can you remote controll a Linux computer?16:25
TheSheepHACKhalo2: yes16:25
HACKhalo2sweet16:26
TheSheepHACKhalo2: for all possible meanings that you might mean16:26
HACKhalo2Remote control for customer help16:26
HACKhalo2how do i set that up? is there a wiki for it?16:27
TheSheepyou can use a remote control if you have apropriate infrared sensors, or for example do it with your cellphone over bluetooth16:27
HACKhalo2wait, not that remote control16:27
gabkdllywell, I am about ready to throw in the towel and just burn an iso and try installing from scratch16:28
HACKhalo2remote control as in remotely connecting to a computer and controling it16:28
TheSheep!ssh16:28
ubotuSSH is the Secure SHell protocol. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSHHowto for usage. Putty is a nice SSH client for Windows; it can be found at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/16:28
HACKhalo2ok16:29
TheSheep!vnc16:29
ubotuVNC is a protocol for remote desktop. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH describes how to use it securely.  It works best over fast connections, otherwise look at !FreeNX16:29
HACKhalo2so i need PuTTY and VNC?16:30
HACKhalo2and i can remote control a Ubuntu OS from a Xubuntu OS, right?16:32
TheSheepyes16:32
TheSheepif you enable it on the other host, of course16:32
HACKhalo2sweet16:32
HACKhalo2VNC is for *buntu, right?16:33
TheSheepvnc is for graphical desktop, ssh is for shell and running graphical apps over the X tunnell16:34
TheSheepmost of the time ssh is enough16:34
HACKhalo2so i need both?16:34
HACKhalo2and i can just modify the LiveCD to install the files i need out of the box, correctly?16:38
TheSheepI guess so, I never tried it16:40
HACKhalo2and i can SSH a windows computer to a Linux, right?16:41
TheSheepyes16:42
TheSheepusing putty16:42
HACKhalo2cool16:43
HACKhalo2this would make dignosing computers a lot easier16:43
quittthello18:22
totalwormfacehi18:22
quitttwhy my other partitions that are mounted do not appear on desktop???!??!18:22
suriroquittt: I suppose that's sth for removable media, and managed by hal deamon18:37
TazaIs Xubuntu ever going to be an official Ubuntu?18:38
Taza(meaning Xubuntu CD's through ShipIt. Esp. Alternative Install)18:38
Odd-rationaleI don't think and alternative cd are available through shipit18:41
Odd-rationales/and/any18:41
quitttsuriro, it is not... removable18:42
quitttit includes my music partition and my windows partition18:42
TazaWhich is a shame because all Ubuntu LiveCD's stink.18:43
suriroquittt: I mean Thunar's volume management (the thing that automatically mounts and creates Desktop links) is for removable media only, nad uses hal18:43
TazaIf you want something half-decent for a LiveCD, get Knoppix.18:43
TazaIf you want a LiveCD with no connection to the actual OS, get an Ubuntu LiveCD.18:44
quitttsuriro, that's false18:44
quitttsuriro, because it happenned only after I've update my Ubuntu to the new version18:44
Odd-rationaleTaza: If I want a live cd, I'd use puppy.. Boots *entirely* into ram! O.O18:45
suriroquittt: this is Xubuntu channel, not Ubuntu18:45
quitttsuriro, ....18:45
TazaOdd-rationale: Heard of toram on any knoppix derivative18:45
quitttsuriro, updated my Ubuntu, I meant Xubunu18:45
Tazaquittt: What's the problem here?18:45
quitttthey are the SAME update...18:45
Tazaquittt: Also, I just did an /ignore suriro18:45
TazaI wasn't here when you asked your question the first time, care to reask?18:46
quitttTaza, no... I've just updated my Xubuntu to its newer version... everything works fine... but I don't see my other mounted partitions on Desktop anymore!18:47
TazaSounds like a HAL problem to me.18:47
quitttTaza, my two music partitions and my windows partition do not appear...18:48
TazaOr possibly it auto-included them in /etc/fstab18:48
Taza... and the dumbass question that has to be asked - did you boot after?18:48
quitttof course heh18:48
quitttactually I did it two days ago...18:48
TazaDo check if they are in your /etc/fstab18:48
quitttthey are mounted18:49
TazaThen they won't appear on the desktop via HAL.18:49
quitttthey just do not appear...18:49
TazaThey shouldn't appear if they are manually mounted. That's working as intended.18:49
quitttthey are on fstab...18:49
TazaThey shouldn't appear on desktop then. It's working as intended.18:50
quitttTaza, and why they did so?18:50
quitttthat doesn't make sense...18:50
TazaUbuntu is being "smart" again.18:50
TazaMake manual shortcuts.18:50
TazaAlso removing them from fstab *might* work.18:50
TazaTbh, autoadding stuff to fstab isn't such a bad idea until the users lose track where they are automounted.18:51
TazaProlly to /media/18:51
TazaI've been using Ubuntu in one way or another from Hoary. Ubuntu has always had these upgrade-related "smartness" issues18:53
TazaThere's a 50/50 chance of these upgrades being actually smart or just resembling clippy.18:56
TazaOverall 8.04 has been a good upgrade.18:58
TazaNothing broke horribly as far as I can see, and there is a lot of welcome changes.18:58
Taza(such as the idiotic language-support-en package depedency list)19:00
TazaHorribly, horribly broken in 7.10, dragging along some 300mb of extra stuff. Working pretty well in 8.0419:01
TazaOf course, I instantly popped into console and removed brasero and ubufox, tweaked grub some and then got to work on pppd.19:03
TazaBecause no way do ppp connections work properly in any ubuntu.19:03
* Taza is rambling on alone19:05
gaurdrodoes anyone know of a program that can recover files from an ntfs partition?19:14
floatinghi. how can i remove swfdec from my machine ? i entered to tenhou.net and ff3 suggested me to install flash plugins... i chose swfdec(default) but after installation, it doesnt display the tenhou.net properly, so i would like to remove it and try adobe or gnash19:15
gaurdrosudo apt-get remove swdec19:16
floatingapt-cache search gives so many swfdec files19:17
floatingokz, maybe its just that mozilla plugin19:18
floatingtried with mozilla-plugin-gnash too, but tenhou.net doesnt work even with that. last try, adobe flash non free, and it works :/19:23
cellofellowGDM isn't logging in. Here's my .xession-errors file: http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/64550/19:38
cellofellowI'm using Gutsy still, and was planning to upgrade to hardy soon. I guess I'll have to now.19:38
tid-wavehello. I've installed synaptic but I don't see it in the System menu. why?19:48
Gokee2_OtherHow do I upgrade from gutsy to hardy with a hardy livecd disk?19:53
Gokee2_OtherI downloaded the xubuntu hardy livecd today because from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4784633 it looked like it would be really simple to just insert the cd and have xubuntu do all the work for me19:54
Gokee2_OtherI put in the cd it asked me if I wanted to view the packages on the cd I said yes but there was no way to use upgrade from there19:54
sirjoebobhello all19:55
Gokee2_OtherThe upgrade thing also kills all the sources in the source file to do its stuff so I can`t just add a cdrom source then upgrade19:55
Gokee2_OtherHello sirjoebob19:55
sirjoebobi am trying to run a few select screenlets that require gtkmozembed from xubuntu.... is this possible or am I wasting my time?19:56
sirjoebobthe "gtk" in the dependency makes me think it may be a waste19:56
Gokee2_OtherI thought gnome was based on gtk?19:58
sirjoebobgnome is... but i am under xfce19:58
sirjoebobso then would it be possible for me to run these on xfce at all?19:59
Gokee2_OtherInstall the gtk libs and you can19:59
Gokee2_OtherI thought xfce had them installed by default?19:59
sirjoebobi did to. and some gnome things have been working...20:00
sirjoebobit is just the gtkmozembed that is not working20:00
sirjoebobit is responsible for porting browser window into a few screenlets that i want to use like the slacker screenlet20:00
Gokee2_OtherHmm whats wrong with it?20:01
sirjoebobit just does not launch20:02
sirjoebobhttp://pastebin.org/3220620:04
sirjoebobthat is the output i receive when running it20:04
chosigis there a deb of php5 that doesn't depend on apache?20:18

luisilloHow do I get a swap will that help me?20:42
PsynoKhi0luisillo: you can add a very applet to yourtop panel20:42
PsynoKhi0a very nice applet*20:42
luisillois verry the name?20:42
luisillooh, what applet20:42
PsynoKhi0wish I could remember... is shows you CPU usage, RAM usage, Swap, and uptime20:43

TazaRight-click on the top panel, "add new item", System Load Monitor20:43
alado2How do i get my 3 extra internal hdd's to turn up as drives, not as folders in for example Thunar, right now i had to add them manually in fstab, and mount them in separate folders20:44
luisillook20:44
luisillodone, now?20:45
PsynoKhi0luisillo: leave you mouse pointer over Swap20:45
alado2in gutsy i didnt need to do anything, they just turned up as drives20:45
PsynoKhi0GAH can't type for shmock today20:45
PsynoKhi0alado2: did you do an upgrade?20:46
luisillo ok PsynoKhi0 I just downloaded the updates would you wait 10 minutes, please?20:46
PsynoKhi0uh yeah heh20:47
luisillothanks!20:47

alado2<PsynoKhi0> i mean its not that big a problem, it just annoys me20:48
PsynoKhi0you mean you don't get thr "mounted icon" on your desktop?20:49
PsynoKhi0the*20:49
alado2for example, right now they just sit in their respective mount points under /mnt/hdd2 etc.20:50
PsynoKhi0but no automount?20:50
alado2yes they do automount20:50
alado2but they dont show up as drives in for example thunars left pane, as they used to do20:51
PsynoKhi0and under "Places"?20:52
alado2nope20:52
PsynoKhi0weird20:53
alado2i mean i have them under places, but i added them as folders in thunar, "send to" -> "side pane"20:53
alado2indeed20:53
luisilloGrr is taking so long20:59
luisilloPsynoKhi0:  still here?21:06
PsynoKhi0yes21:06
luisillogood says 10 minutes left21:06
PsynoKhi0hehe I'm around for a good 2 hours, so :)21:06
luisillo:D21:08
PsynoKhi0besides a lot of other people could help you here too, probably better than I too :D21:09
PsynoKhi0I'm merely belonging the "average user who starts to get the hang of it" category :P21:10
PsynoKhi0for real pros look elsewhere hehe!21:10
luisillobut can will I solve my problem :p ?21:12
luisilloit's an old pc but I read that old pc should work fine21:13
PsynoKhi0hopefully21:13
PsynoKhi0I run Xubuntu on a PC with a 500 MHz proc and 128MB RAM, works pretty nicely21:13
PsynoKhi0not blazing fast and stuff like OpenOffice isn't a good idea to use but overall it's usable21:15
PsynoKhi0konnichiwa21:16
PsynoKhi0errr hang on... wrong... ohayou21:17
PsynoKhi0chikushou >.<21:21
luisilloPsynoKhi0:  but why will swat help me?21:22
luisilloand how?21:22
luisilloor swap21:23
PsynoKhi0luisillo: just checking you actually have swap up and running, and how much you have21:23
luisillook let me reboot21:27
PsynoKhi0k21:27
luisilloby the way what version do you use?21:27
PsynoKhi0ubuntu 7.10 on the computer I'm on right now21:28
PsynoKhi0xubuntu 7.10 on the 500Mhz/128MB dekstop, xubuntu 8.04 on a 1Ghz/386MB laptop21:28
luisilloOk I will need to update later then21:29
luisilloI am using 6.06 I guess21:29
Gokee2_OtherSo anyone around now that knows how to use a xubuntu  hardy live cd to upgrade a xubuntu gutsy install?21:38
PsynoKhi0Gokee2_Other: I don't, I know it's feasable with the alternate CD though21:39
PsynoKhi0I did it myself with the alternate.... but somehow it still required an internet connection heh21:41
Gokee2_OtherHmmm....21:42
Gokee2_OtherI downloaded the live cd because I wanted it to be useful after install as well....21:42
Gokee2_OtherI have net here its just really slow21:42
Gokee2_OtherHow did you get it to work with the alternate?21:43
PsynoKhi0booted in gutsy, inserted the CD and followed the instructions on screen21:44
PsynoKhi0!upgrade21:44
ubotuFor upgrading, see the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes21:44
Gokee2_OtherI also upgraded the computer across the room through the Internet yesterday could I use the packages that computer downloaded on this computer?21:45
Gokee2_OtherI tried putting in the cd and it did not have any way for me to start a upgrade21:47
PsynoKhi0to be honnest I don't know, it might work but it sounds tedious since I believe you'd have to select all the packages one by one... or worse, type their name one by one after sudo apt-get install21:47
luisillodone!21:48
luisillorebooting!21:48
PsynoKhi0luisillo: ah ok lol21:48
ScuniziI just installed xubuntu ontop of server (hardy) and when I go to Applications/Accessories/Terminal it reboot GDM.. what's happening? and how do I fix it?21:48
luisillohow can I reboot from a terminal??21:49
PsynoKhi0Scunizi: change DefaultDepth to 16 in xorg.conf21:49
PsynoKhi0luisillo: sudo shutdown -r now21:50
Gokee2_OtherWould it be ok if I copied /var/cache/apt from the other computer to this one?21:50
ScuniziPsynoKhi0: ok.. funny.. it just started happening when I had to fix screen resolution21:50
luisillook done21:50
PsynoKhi0Gokee2_Other: again, it might work but what you'll save in file transfer speed, you might lose in time spend installing the packages21:51
PsynoKhi0your call :) not even sure it's a safe procedure tbh21:51
PsynoKhi0especially since with a kernel upgrade21:51
PsynoKhi0-since21:51
PsynoKhi0Gokee2_Other: the upgrading process in itself is risky enough for a lot of people not to even bother with that and do a clean install21:53
* PsynoKhi0 's first upgrade (7.04 -> 7.10) went south big time *shivers*21:53
PsynoKhi0corrupted file system on root...21:53
PsynoKhi0Gokee2_Other: do you have your /home on a separate partition?21:55
LeeSharpApt just checks /var/cache/apt before downloading.  Prefiling the cache is safe.21:55
ScuniziPsynoKhi0: nope.. that didn't do it..  running 1024x768 (on purpose) changed to 16bit depth.. rebooted and same issue21:55
PsynoKhi0Scunizi: oh...21:56
ScuniziPsynoKhi0: any other ideas?21:56
PsynoKhi0acutally no... it's the only trick I've heard of so far21:56
PsynoKhi0actually*21:56
Gokee2_OtherNo /home is on the same part21:56
Gokee2_OtherIts not a real big deal if it dies :)  This is a mostly unused install anyway21:57
PsynoKhi0Scunizi: does using alt f2 and launching "xterm" result in the same thing?21:57
ScuniziPsynoKhi0: no21:57
PsynoKhi0Gokee2_Other: ok, up to you really21:57
PsynoKhi0Scunizi: makes me think I haven't tried to use the regular terminal yet myself hehe21:58
ScuniziPsynoKhi0: probably just the shortcut command that's messing things up..21:58
PsynoKhi0Scunizi: I'm afraid I can't give you any more advice though21:58
Scunizitx21:59
luisillodone PsynoKhi022:02
luisillosays swap: 0MB of 423MB used22:02
PsynoKhi0ok sounds good22:02
luisillois that bad?22:02
luisillooh22:02
PsynoKhi0have you checked your video card drivers?22:03
luisillonope22:03
luisillowhat for?22:03
luisilloand how22:03
PsynoKhi0from a terminal, type:22:03
PsynoKhi0cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf22:04
PsynoKhi0case sensitive22:04
luisillonow?22:04
PsynoKhi0you got a list of Section, Option, EndSection and so on?22:05
luisillowell yeah22:05
PsynoKhi0ok look for a Section "Device" that relates to your video card22:06
luisillo"Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i7"22:06
PsynoKhi0ok, what's under Driver in that section?22:06
luisilloSection "Device"22:07
luisillo        Identifier      "Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i7"22:07
luisillo        Driver          "trident"22:07
luisillo        BusID           "PCI:1:0:0"22:07
PsynoKhi0ok looking good22:07
PsynoKhi0next, under Section "Screen", what's the value of DefaultDepth?22:07
luisilloDefaultDepth    2422:08
PsynoKhi0ah, here we can change to 16 to boost performance22:09
PsynoKhi0in the same terminal, type:22:09
PsynoKhi0sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.old && sudo mousepad /etc/X11/xorg.conf22:10
luisillodone something like a notepad was opened22:10
luisilloshould I change the 24 to 16 there?22:11
PsynoKhi0yes22:11
luisillooh wait22:11
luisilloone says 24 and the other one 622:11
luisillo16 *22:11
PsynoKhi0could you copy those parts and paste them over at http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org please?22:12
luisillohttp://www.saedasdas.pastebin.com/m3c9b05a822:12
PsynoKhi0ah :P22:12
luisillo:) !22:12
PsynoKhi0ok, change DefaultDepth to 16 and delete the SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes [...] EndSubSection (4 lines)22:14
luisillocould yo do it there? at the botton to just copy and paste all?22:15
luisilloif not is ok22:15
PsynoKhi0might be simpler22:16
luisillook22:16
PsynoKhi0I'll go as far as removing all depths but 16bits22:16
PsynoKhi0http://www.saedasdas.pastebin.com/m71021c7b22:17
luisillojust copy and paste that?22:17
luisillodone I did it, now?22:18
PsynoKhi0replacing your Section "Screen" with the one on that  page would be enough22:18
PsynoKhi0now save, and log out/back in22:18
luisilloI just copied and pasted yours in mine and saved22:18
luisillodo I need to reboot now?22:18
PsynoKhi0it's fine22:18
PsynoKhi0no22:18
PsynoKhi0only restart your X server (log out)22:18
PsynoKhi0or press ctrl alt backspace if in a hurry :)22:19
luisillook but rebooting would work too, right?22:19
PsynoKhi0yes22:19
luisillook brb :D22:20
PsynoKhi0k22:20
luisilloPsynoKhi0,  done22:26
luisillonow'22:26
PsynoKhi0check how it goes22:27
PsynoKhi0is it a laptop?22:28
luisillonope22:28
luisillodesktop22:28
PsynoKhi0ok22:28
PsynoKhi0any better?22:29
luisillomaybe a little22:29

Gokee2_OtherHAHAHA!22:35
Gokee2_OtherI got the packages from the other computer onto this one and installing during the upgrade :)22:36
PsynoKhi0nice :)22:36
Gokee2_OtherI needed to copy /var/cache/apt/archives to this computer run dpkg-scanpackages on them make a iso mount the iso with a loopback and use  apt-cdrom  :)22:38
Gokee2_OtherThinking of the other computer I wonder if it ever logged into hardy...  I will have to go check22:39
PsynoKhi0that's more advanced than any suggestion I could have come up with hehe :D22:39
Gokee2_OtherHeh I found it mostly on a website http://ubuntuliving.blogspot.com/2007/04/copying-updates-to-other-systems.html Although he burned a cd and I did not want to waste a cd :)22:45
PsynoKhi0oh :)22:45
PsynoKhi0nice find22:47
Gokee2_OtherAnyone around happen to know how to set localization(wow spell check did not give me red on that...)?  I am set to canada and I want to be in Los Anglos  (I really live right next to seattle but Los Anglos is the closest thing in the US to me on the timezone map)22:48
S0210Hi! I use Hardy with hu language packs... at power off the buttons ("Switch user", "Log out", "Shut down", etc.) are partly show in English and some are in Hungarian. What's is going on? Isn't it the language-pack-gnome-hu-base is the one to be translated?22:50
luisilloPsynoKhi0,  I couldn't find it22:51
luisillo:\22:51
PsynoKhi0luisillo: what?22:51
luisilloApplications > Settings > Windows Manager22:51
luisillooh wait22:52
PsynoKhi0S0210: is your Language support properly configured?22:53
S0210PsynoKhi0: yes as well I can judge... not much more problems to be seen22:53
PsynoKhi0or did you simply choose hungarian at the installation boot screen?22:53
S0210PsynoKhi0: most of the applications come with the hu translations (probably set by the installation)22:54
PsynoKhi0S0210: have you done anything under Language support? otherwise your localization installation may be incomplete22:55
S0210PsynoKhi0: hu is checked... I do not think it is incomplete22:56
PsynoKhi0and hungarian set as default?22:56
S0210PsynoKhi0: it is22:56
PsynoKhi0S0210: then unfortunately the translation packages are incomplete... I have that too on my xubuntu boxes22:57
S0210PsynoKhi0: that's ok. but which packages should I look for on the translation.ubuntu.com?22:57
PsynoKhi0good question...22:58
S0210(eh... bad url, I meant https://translations.launchpad.net/)22:58
PsynoKhi0I've learned to live with english poping out every now and then, someone more experienced than I might know22:59
PsynoKhi0is there any hungarian ubuntu website? I'd ask someone on their forums22:59
S0210PsynoKhi0: there is. I reported the translation error. I also informed them here at #ubuntu-hu. but you are right that I haven't asked them in the forum yet...23:01
PsynoKhi0S0210: someone might have a 100% hungarion ISO available23:02
PsynoKhi0Hungarian* sorry23:02
StroganoffPsynoKhi0: http://ubuntu.hu/forum23:02
S0210PsynoKhi0: it doesn't have much to do with ISO I think23:03
S0210Stroganoff: do you know by chance what language pack defines the log out buttons? (as seen here http://ubuntu.hu/files/imagecache/thumb/files/bugreports/xxx_end.png)23:04
Stroganoffxfce-session23:05
Stroganoff/usr/share/locale/hu/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-session.mo23:06
PsynoKhi0S0210: I meant that someone may have worked on an ISO with complete out-of-the-box Hungarian translation so you don't have to worry about language packages23:06
nikolamPsynoKhi0, You can install system and download all langage packs23:10
nikolamPsynoKhi0, Maybe You can make such CD? ;)23:10
PsynoKhi0nikolam: I know you can... bah nvm23:10
S0210Ahm... "The xfce4-session project is not set up for translation in Launchpad. "23:11
