dodimarhi, i have a problem installing xubuntu... after installtion, when I reboot my system... GRUB gives me an error 18...00:23
j1mcdodimar: what have you tried thus far to resolve it?  have you tried anything?00:27
dodimardone nothing, can't figure it out.. when I first encoutered this (with 7.10), i just re-installed xubuntu (problem with partitioning back then), but now, everything was in order, but can't seem to make it work (tried redoing the installation, still same error)...00:29
cody-somervillehttp://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB#Error_1800:30
dodimaryeah, reading it now, but my grub is placed at the front (should be cause I chose to install grub at the mbr)...00:31
dodimaroh well, have to fix this on my own,, hope I won't give up on xubuntu this time...00:55
dodimartnx00:55
cody-somervilleIt isn't about it not being able to load grub.01:14
cody-somervilleIt is about not being able to load the _kernel_.01:14
cody-somervilleSo you need to use the solution it outlines and you'll be good.01:15
cody-somerville:: If he comes back, please repeat my response to him.01:15
teohhanhuihi01:17
teohhanhuianyone around?01:19
cody-somervilleYes.01:21
cody-somervilleJust ask your question ;]01:21
teohhanhuihow do i adjust the volume for my audio device?01:30
cody-somervilleRight click the panel, click add to panel01:31
cellofellowteohhanhui: hi again. There's a Volume applet in the panel applets. Right-click the panel and choose something like Add to Panel. (I forgot the exact item and am using GNOME right now.)01:31
cody-somervilleSelect the mixer01:31
cody-somervilleand tada :)01:31
cody-somervilleHeya cellofellow :)01:32
teohhanhuiokay, will try that.. but why isn't that more obvious?01:32
cellofellowHey there Cody. What happened to somerville32?01:32
cody-somervilleWell, I set cody-somerville on my laptop so that I could leave my desktop logged in01:32
cellofellowoh, ok01:33
cody-somervillebut now my desktop is packed away and I've been using my laptop exclusively.01:33
cody-somervilleteohhanhui, It would be my fault. I'll fix it tomorrow.01:33
cellofellowI've been using my laptop now for 6 months, and using GNOME on it so that's why I haven't been in #xubuntu much.01:33
cody-somervilleI'm guilty of that too :P01:33
cellofellowSometimes little weird things popup in GNOME that I know wouldn't have happenned in XFCE. I have the impression that XFCE is a bit of a better-designed system than GNOME.01:34
cellofellowdesktop, not system.01:34
cody-somerville:)01:35
cellofellowWith speed, I figure using Compiz-Fusion on XFCE would defeat the purpose, and I like Compiz.01:35
teohhanhuiit seems like an average user has a lot of packages to install in xubuntu01:36
cody-somervillecellofellow, I found it was still faster for me.01:36
cellofellowhmm, ok01:37
cody-somervilleAlthough Xfce4's performance gains are slowly fading away as gnome gets faster and more robust.01:37
cellofellowWell, I've heard (but not tried it) that the slackware-based XFCE-distros like Zenwalk and Vector are quite a bit faster than Xubuntu.01:38
cody-somervilleYea, I can see that.01:38
teohhanhuiand xfce4 getting more.... bloated?01:38
cody-somervilleteohhanhui, hehe01:38
cody-somervilleI think Ubuntu's core is getting a bit more bloated too01:39
cellofellowI think it's Xubuntu adding stuff to XFCE that makes it seem bloated. Last version of Xubuntu I used was Feisty and I've tried Gutsy but it had way more *stuff*.01:39
cellofellowSo, I figured, may as well use GNOME.01:40
teohhanhuiwas hoping that it could save my 6-year-old pc from all those lags and freezes in XP ;P01:40
cody-somervilleteohhanhui, oh yes.01:40
* cody-somerville is very happy with Linux. :)01:40
cellofellowUnless the hardware is causing the lags and freazes, even KDE4 should lack them.01:40
teohhanhuiunfortuantely, i only have 128mb of ram01:41
cody-somervilleGah! :(01:41
cody-somervilleI'd recommend atleast 51201:41
cellofellowdefinetly use Xubuntu or even Fluxbunto on that thing.01:41
cellofellowHey, Xubuntu runs fine on a Pentium III with 319MB.01:41
cellofellowAt least Feisty did, been using my new Turion X2 2GB with Gutsy.01:42
teohhanhuiany tips to make it faster? hehe01:42
cellofellowGet more RAM if you can, disable unused services.01:42
cellofellowThat's what eats RAM is the services.01:43
cellofellowDaemons, services is Windows-speak I don't know why Ubuntu calls Daemons "services".01:43
cellofellowOr is that GNOME?01:43
cellofellowcody-somerville: What would you say are the real-world minimum hardware requirements for Xubuntu and a "normal" user?01:45
teohhanhuii didn't realize what "mousepad" was. haha01:46
cellofellowI have Xubuntu running on an old Pentium II with 64MB and it starts up rather slow. s3virge video driver seems a bit unstable too. It's Feisty so I don't know what that has to do with it.01:46
teohhanhuilooks like i don't need gedit?01:46
cellofellowmore like Abiword and Firefox.01:46
cellofellowteohhanhui: oh, no, use SciTE on Xubuntu, not GEdit.01:47
teohhanhuibut i only need a plain text editor, like mousepad!! ;P01:47
cellofellowThen use Mousepad.01:47
cellofellowSciTE is good for more complicated stuff like some conf files, HTML, Python, what have you.01:47
teohhanhuiokay.. what's the difference between autoremove and remove in apt-get?01:48
* cellofellow uses GEdit mostly for LaTeX, SciTE or vim for a lot of stuff, Eclipse sometimes.01:48
cellofellowteohhanhui: autoremove gets rid of some if it was auto installed.01:49
teohhanhuigreat01:49
cellofellowteohhanhui: seems more complicated to me than using aptitude myself. I almost never use apt-get, opting for aptitude.01:49
teohhanhuihmm... what's that?01:50
teohhanhuiis it better than apt-get?01:50
cellofellowit's a better apt-get. It's got an ncurses-based GUI, and a command-line interface similar to apt-get, but a little more intuitive.01:51
teohhanhuiokay, will try that out too01:51
teohhanhuiit provides the functionality of synaptics without the lags and freezes? cool01:52
teohhanhuioops.. that's synaptic01:53
cellofellowmore functionality really.01:57
cellofellowHere's the tip for searching descriptions: put ~dsearchterm. Just puting searchterm only searches titles. Took me a while to figure that one out.01:57
aLeSDhi all01:58
teohhanhuiany suggestions for audip player with a GUI?01:58
aLeSDI just installed xubuntu.desktop01:58
teohhanhui*audio01:58
aLeSDhow can I configure and start compizi ?01:58
cellofellowI like Exaile but it needs python-gnome2 for full functionality.01:58
teohhanhuii just did some hours ago, hehe01:58
cellofellowteohhanhui: BMPx is good too.01:58
cellofellowteohhanhui: and Audacious if you like WinAMP.01:59
aLeSDhi02:01
aLeSDsomeone could help me , pls?02:02
teohhanhuii have no idea how to to jump back to the parent listing in aptitude02:09
Dark_FoxHello everyone. I'm having trouble with installing the new Xubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.  Everything installs alright, but I can't boot into my system afterwards. It appears that GRUB is not properly booting up my /boot and root partitions properly.  I've tried reinstalling GRUB with grub-install to my MBR (/dev/sda), but when I try to configrue with "grub", I do "root (hd0,4)" then "setup (hd0)" or "setup (hd0,0)", it says 'Checking if "/boot/grub/st02:48
Dark_Foxage1" exists... no' , 'Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no', then it says "Error 15: File not found".  Right now I'm in the shell it gives me after it installs the base system.02:48

jsoftwWhat about something gui like.03:21
cellofellowjsoftw: add the volume applet to the panel.03:22
PsynoKhi0heya, xubuntu-restricted-extras seems to install fairly bothersome java packages...03:22
jsoftwcellofellow: ahh uh.. whats it called ( as a package name )03:22
jsoftwI dont seem to have it.03:22
cellofellowjsoftw: just right-click the panel and Add Item to it, it should be in that window.03:23
jsoftwits not.03:23
jsoftwHence, my origional question, again.03:23
cellofellowhmmmm03:23

Finnishe1Ah, wonderful, I got in...04:29
=== Finnishe1 is now known as Finn
=== Finn is now known as Finnisher
FinnisherWell, I have a rather old laptop with half-broken CD drive. I can load the alternate Xubuntu CD, but if I try to install the base system from the CD, I get a lot of read errors on the packets. Could it be possible to boot from the CD, set up network connection and then download the base-system from an official (x)ubuntu ftp server?04:32
Odd-rationale!mini | Finnisher04:33
ubotuFinnisher: The Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want (the installer is like the one on the !Alternate CD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD04:33
FinnisherWonderful, thanks, I'll try it out!04:33
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: < 10 mb O.O04:34
FinnisherEven if I download the Ubuntu mini-CD, I can choose Xfce instead of Gnome, right?04:34
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: but the mirror might be slow nowadays...04:34
Odd-rationalewith everyone trying to upgrade...04:35
Finnishernaturally04:35
Finnishernow, let's try to get that lappy boot the minicd =S04:57
FinnisherShould it mention ISOLINUX, like the alternate CD or load a bootloader with F1: Linux ?04:59
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: like the alt04:59
Finnisherhmm, I guess I keep trying then05:00
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: it didn't boot?05:01
Finnisherno it didn't05:01
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: you burned the iso image, not the iso itself? just double checking05:01
Finnisherwith some CDs I have to try several times before the drive boots off it05:01
Finnisheryes, with ImgBurn05:02
Odd-rationaleok05:02
Finnisherah, 13th time the charm, it booted \o/05:02
FinnisherYES! It retrieves the components from the Internet! Lovely!05:05
Finnisherbtw the MiniCD page doesn't list the Hardy Heron as LTS release (doesn't have the asterisk) ...05:05
Finnisherbut then again I guess this isn't the place to mention it05:06
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: slow retrieval?05:06
Finnisherwell it only retrieves installation components for now05:12
Odd-rationaleFinnisher: well have fun05:13
Odd-rationaleI;m going to bed...05:13
FinnisherI don't mind having slow retrieval, I'm going to let it install overnight... or overday...  anyway, I'm going to sleep while it downloads =D05:13
rpedro__hello05:46
rpedro__I'm having a bit of trouble logging in to a xubuntu desktop on my main account. Already tried removing ~/.config/xfce4 folder but I still get a blank, frozen desktop when I log in05:48
rpedro__something similar happened to me before, I think it was some incompatibility with xfce + compiz, it would load the desktop apparently but as soon as compiz loaded automatically (it borrowed the settings, it seems, from gnome, but removing the compiz icon from the gnome startup session would not stop it from loading at startup) the screen would flash, and I would get a bunch of empty windows/panels05:50
rpedro__removing the .config/xfce4 fixed that that time, but not now...05:51
PsynoKhi0do you see your icons?05:54
rpedro__nope05:56
rpedro__just a blank screen05:56
PsynoKhi0hmm05:56
rpedro__I mean, the color of the desktop background I guess05:57
PsynoKhi0can you alt +f2?05:57
rpedro__didn't try... :(05:57
rpedro__just killed the desktop with ctrl-alt-bksp05:58
PsynoKhi0you could try deleting you cache05:59
PsynoKhi0.cache/xfce4/sessions I think05:59
PsynoKhi0a bunch of text files in there05:59
rpedro__ls .cache/xfce4/06:00

PsynoKhi0uh weird06:05
PsynoKhi0well, maybe not...06:05
Finnisheroh yay, installation of GRUB failed \o/06:11
FinnisherI'll go with LILO then...06:13
Finnishero..k...06:15
FinnisherLILO failed as well06:15
Finnishernow what?06:15
Finnishergrub fails at 0% and lilo fails at 50%, whether I'm trying to install it on master boot record or "new ubuntu installation"06:19
Finnisherif I continue without a boot loader, will all the past installation work be for naught?06:19
Finnisherwell06:34
FinnisherI hope I can install a boot loader afterwards06:34
Finnisherwell fat chance06:34
Finnisherbecause I see the bootloader I used with FreeBSD, it offers Linux as F1, but gives a loud BEEEEP when I press F1, Esc or Enter06:36
Finnishergoddamn, started installation again on rescue mode, but it won't accept any server as archive server06:45
rpedrodunno the nick who was helping me just before, I tried logging in to an xfce session after removing those two folders, same thing06:47

albuntuis anyone else experiencing really slow speeds with ff 3 beta 5?  this machine is acting all messed up since the 'upgrade', running xubuntu os on dell opptipllexx with 256 ram, used to work just fine and fast.07:13
TheSheepFinnisher: you can fill the fist bytes of your disk with zeroes07:13
Finnisherwonderful07:13
TheSheep(can't remember how many)07:13
rpedrobut the main problem I have with gnome, besides it being slow, is that some 'core' desktop apps don't really seem to get basic development effort on them, (a few) features are added, but bugs and usabillity issues remain...07:13
TheSheepbut that will make it impossible to boot it07:14
FinnisherI was left with FreeBSD bootloader when I installed Xubuntu and now I can't install GRUB or LILO and the FreeBSD loader (BTX is it?) can't load Xubuntu07:14
TheSheepFinnisher: why can't you install grub?07:14
Finnisherbecause error?07:14
PsynoKhi0albuntu: only ff3 is an issue?07:14
FinnisherI dunno07:14
Finnisherit just fails07:15
TheSheepFinnisher: try disabling the anti-virsu protection in bios07:15
rpedrolike gnome-panel, hangs sometimes out of nowhere for me, and nautilus, specially nautilus(!), I think it is a great app, but just seems to get even slower with each release...07:15
Finnisherit is such an old bios it has no such thing07:16
PsynoKhi0took me close to an hour to find out why my fresh hardy install felt much slower than gutsy: the default theme has animated bars in the panel applets, and they were eating 30-40% of the cpu cycle times heh07:19
PsynoKhi0bah he/she left07:19
albuntufirefox crashed on me and took chatzilla down with it.  is anybody else having any probs with ff 3 beta 5 which got installed with the hardy 'upgrade'?07:25
rpedroalbuntu: ff 3 crashes for me all the time too07:38
rpedroalbuntu: on hardy, cause firefox 3 on gutsy didn't07:39
albunturpedro, i wasn't having any probs on gutsy either07:40
albuntubut i wonder if going back to ff 2 will be any better on hardy?07:40
rpedroon the bug report I made a while back, and if you run firefox from a terminal, it always complains about glib, or the bug is glib related, or something... :/07:41
rpedroyeah, no issues with firefox207:41
rpedroalbuntu: apt-get install firefox2 , I think07:43
albuntumaybe i should try that07:44
holyguyverI am running Gutsy have been so for 3 days, I have had sound all those 3 days, but then a few hours ago I tried to stream a flv from youtube through mplayer when it caused mplayer to crash, then from that moment on my sound has not worked, I have restarted my computer & I have uninstalled & reinstalled alsa, & still nothing, please help07:48
holyguyverSo any help?07:49
raider_how come I can hear sound from only one app and not from the other?07:53
raider_is it not possible to hear two sounds simultaneously on xubuntu?07:53
ere4si!sound07:55
ubotuIf you're having problems with sound, first ensure ALSA is selected, by double clicking on the volume control, then File -> Change Device (ALSA Mixer). If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP307:55
holyguyverso anyone know an answer to my problem?07:56
ere4siholyguyver: how do you know it was mplayer that crashed?07:58
raider_ere4si: sound works fine. but if I have youtube open and mp3blaster playing something I can hear just one of them and not both simultaneously07:59
holyguyverbecause I was using mplayer at the time & I made it crash 4 times07:59
ere4siraider_: those links will help sort you out08:00
holyguyverI didn't loose audio until the final crash08:00
ere4siholyguyver: if you run mplayer from a terminal you will get output aas to what the issue is08:01
ere4si*as08:02
holyguyverno the issue is system wide now08:02
raider_ere4si: so it isnt enabled by default?08:02
holyguyverthat is why I tried uninstalling alsa08:03
ere4siholyguyver: mplayer might say - no audio device - or similar which would mean it is a h/ware issue08:03
ere4siraider_: it works here08:03
holyguyverno it is not a hardware issue as my sound was working in ubuntu for the past 3 days08:03
ere4siholyguyver: but not now?08:04
holyguyveryes not since mplayer crashed about 2 hours ago08:04
holyguyvernow no media player will make sounds08:04
holyguyver& the system will not make sounds08:04
holyguyverbut until 2 hours ago I was listening to music on this baby for the past 3 days08:04
ere4siholyguyver: just trying to get some info about why it crased - somewhere to work from - I can't see it from here :)08:05
holyguyverI did a reboot, I uninstalled & reinstalled alsa, I checked & there is no errors reported in the terminal & my soundcard is perfectly compatible08:06
holyguyver& nothing is on mute & my speakers are good08:06
raider_ere4si: you have alsa OSS installed?08:06
holyguyverI hope that info helped :p08:07
ere4siraider_: nope - alsa with onboard intel sound08:07
raider_gah its same here08:07
raider_intel card08:07
raider_are you on xubuntu?08:07
holyguyverYes I am08:08
raider_that was for ere4si -_-08:08
ere4siholyguyver: fire up mplayer and then check dmesg in a terminal to get some info08:08
ere4siraider_: yep08:08
holyguyverHow would I go about doing that?08:08
raider_ok I am gonna log into xfce and then see08:08
holyguyverso far in terminal I have been trying aplay08:09
ere4siholyguyver: try to play something with an app - anything sound wise - then in a terminal type dmesg -tail08:09
ere4siholyguyver: that should be     dmesg tail08:12
holyguyveryou know what you won't believe this but in the other room I was chatting in I told the guys how I fixed this problem 5 months ago & now it just happened again, so actually thank you, it is fixed :p08:13
ere4sihappy for you08:14
holyguyverI told them that it was something really silly that fixed it like asking the terminal to list something that should not have effected it, only to put up a list of processes or something, & it fixed it, & they all 5 months ago was still wondering how that fixed it, but I didn't care as I was just happy it was fixed :p08:16
raider_ere4si: what two apps are you using? -_-08:17
ere4siraider_: two apps? - for doing what?08:17
raider_dude...08:17
raider_I said two apps together cant play music simultaneously08:17
raider_that was my problem08:17
raider_mp3blaster and firefox couldnt play music together08:18
ere4siraider_: I play music and have an alarm that uses aplay in the terminal - both sound together fine08:18
raider_you got mp3blaster?08:18
raider_could you get it for a moment, I wanted to test something08:19
ere4siraider_: I've never heard of it08:19
ere4siis it in the repos?08:19
raider_apt-get install mp3blaster once. its a CLI based mp3 player08:19
holyguyverI just told them all about how you helped me, they are all confused again now like how they was 5 months ago as the cammand to list the log should not have fixed it, but it did :p08:20
raider_ere4si: got it?08:20
ere4siyep08:21
raider_fire up mp3lbaster in a terminal and load a file08:21
raider_press F308:21
raider_because F1 opens help for the terminal08:22
raider_now play a track and fire up firefox08:22
raider_play a song on youtbe08:22
ere4sigot a link?08:23
raider_lol play anything man08:23
raider_can you hear both songs?08:24
ere4sihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9HaNbsIfp0 - gave no sound08:25
raider_exactly08:25
ere4siI wouldn't have understood either if both played..08:26
ere4siI'll try something08:26
raider_now close mp3blaster08:26
raider_reload youtube08:26
raider_and when you start hearing the youtube song08:26
raider_fire up mp3blaster and try playing something08:26

TheSheepvoodoo: if you like amarok, try exaile09:13
TheSheepvoodoo: quod libet and rhythmbox are library-based too09:13
voodoois it written in python??09:13
TheSheepvoodoo: if you want something more traditional, like winamp, try audacious09:13
TheSheepvoodoo: yes09:13
voodooi need something simple, not something which is a cpu/memory hog09:15
Iskri still like beep media player09:15
Iskri find it lighter than audacious09:15
TheSheeppersonally, I use mpd with several different clients09:15
nikolamNow I have xlockmore to lock the screen but it does not select saver I want (blank screen) but puts them randomly09:16
voodooIskr, are you referring to xfmedia?09:18
TheSheepvoodoo: bmp is another fork of xmms, like audacious09:18
cody-somervillexmms and bmp both are no longer in the archive, IIRC.09:18
voodooi've install audacious... i like it... seems like a good clone of winamp09:26

voodooor anyway, how do i use audacious' cuesheet plugin?09:51
DaBeowulfhmm my upgrade from feisty to hardy did throw some error towards the end, (plucker and update-manager related) and the update-manager displays this in a terminal that I ran it from at the end: "current dist not found in meta-release file" (twice)11:50
DaBeowulfAny idea what gives, or a pointer to a bug report of this sort?11:51
DaBeowulfI tried reinstalling it with apt-get but it still does this.11:52
DaBeowulfWere there any updates (security or recommended) after the release of hardy?11:52
ere4sitry   sudo apt-get update   then   sudo apt-get upgrade   to see11:53
DaBeowulfI did, someone in #ubuntu just said there weren't so that's good so far..11:54
DaBeowulfthanks for the reply btw :)11:54
ere4sik11:55
DaBeowulfAnyone else noticed strange behaviour with firefox3b5?11:56
ere4siDaBeowulf: lots of people in #ubuntu have cpu issues - 100% usage etc11:56
DaBeowulfyes it gets unresponsive and I thought I had mad hdd activity (until I closed it)11:57
DaBeowulfWhen I then started it again and only stared at my blank starting page for a while it'd come back after a while.. backdoor? ¬¬11:58
ere4siDaBeowulf: I have seen people with hdd issues and firefox but it isn't one I get11:58
ere4siDaBeowulf: try starting it from a terminal to see some output11:59
DaBeowulfDuh, good idea thanks. >_<11:59

ere4siit has it's uses...12:01
DaBeowulfI didn't try dialing in again to get another IP and see if that rids me of it or makes it take longer to reoccur either12:01
DaBeowulfBut I have faith it's 'normal' behaviour for someone with my exact setup atm.12:02
DaBeowulfnah, no output.. but declining faith =012:19
ere4siDaBeowulf: there's been more folk with the same issue in #ubuntu...12:24
DaBeowulfoh okay12:24
DaBeowulfWell I managed to sort it.12:24
cody-somervilleWhats the problem?12:30
DaBeowulfEr that was an aside about an xorg.conf prob.12:31

Blastathe only thing i'm missing so far is the middle-mouse working like in windows, e.g. hold it down and move the mouse and you "scroll" up and down on a page16:24

krabadorhey people, how can i mount my partitions in desktop icons?16:47
Blastagrrr i've had to restart x now through ctrl-alt-backspace twice and then redo dpkg --configure -a16:47
SideBandOk. After upgrading to 8.04, when I put my Atheros card in my laptop into AP mode (to provide internet for the other laptop here in the truck. Yes, I'm a truckdriver using Linux) the laptop locks up, hard, requiring me to pull the battery and the AC cord to get a reboot. This didn't happen under 7.10. Are there any known issues with the new version of the restricted-drivers package for atheros...16:47
SideBand... or am I just up schist creek?16:48
TheSheepSideBand: none that I've heard of, but you might check the bug list, also examining your logs could be insightful16:49
SideBandThere's nothing in the logs.. Just goes from the ACPI messages I get repeatedly (because it's one of the odd Toshibas) to the "booting" messages... So no joy there.16:51
TheSheepSideBand: the bug list is at http://bugs.ubuntu.com, btw16:52
SideBandThe upgrade also broke a couple other things (like XASTIR) but I expected that with the libs upgrades. That was easy to fix.. just rebuilt XASTIR, but this ATH problem is going to drive me nuts until it's fixed.16:52
TheSheepSideBand: there could be aqlso someone with similar problems on the forums16:52

TheSheepVampBoy: depends what you're aiming at20:34
teohhanhuido u need xubuntu?20:34
VampBoywell, ubuntu runs a bit slow, and I don't need all the overhead on my poor old athlon XP 180020:34

teohhanhuivampboy: as a user who has just used xubuntu for 2 days, i find it user unfriendly20:36
VampBoyok, I will likely do that then.. I haven't really done much with the ubuntu install, but I had a GRUB issue when I installed at first20:36
VampBoyoh?20:36
teohhanhuivampboy: configuration-wise, at least20:36
VampBoywhich parts do you find unfriendly, I ask because my GF uses teh machine too and is computer illiterate20:36
TheSheepseancron: this error means that the kernel file is too far on the disk for your old bios to load it20:36
TheSheepseancron: the solution for it is usually to put the /boot directory on a separate partition near the beginning of the disk20:37
teohhanhuivampboy: if u r fine with it as it is, i think it's ok, but i would like to customize it a lot. Unfotunately I'm a newbie and have to look for faqs, howtos, guides...20:37
VampBoyyeah, I don't need too much customization20:38
seancronTheSheep: do you have any suggestions for doing that without losing any of my other data?20:38
VampBoyI don't do the widget thing20:38
TheSheepteohhanhui: yes, it's assumed that customizing is doen by someone who knows what he's doing, ubuntu is better for experimenting20:38
VampBoytheSheep: what did you mean by it depends what I am aiming at?20:38
teohhanhuivampboy: up to now i have no idea how to display a picture in the login window20:38
TheSheepseancron: you can boot from livecd and use the gparted (partition editor) to move/create your partiions20:38
TheSheepseancron: a backup of the most important files is advised, however (as always)20:39
teohhanhuithesheep: ubuntu won't install on my old pc20:39

seancronTheSheep: Ok thank you very much.  I've tried going through the grub command line before but that didn't work.  So hopefully this will work.20:40

Odd-rationalemaxwaine: me!21:27
TheSheepmaxwaine: yeah, since 6 months21:27
maxwainelol21:27
maxwainewow21:27
maxwainei was using 7.10 and yesterday i clean installed 8.04 and now i find many features missing, is it only for me or for everyone?21:28
Odd-rationalemaxwaine: like what?21:29
maxwainelike in the menu Application|Settings21:30
Odd-rationalemaxwaine: try apps --> settings --> settings manager21:31
maxwaineyea i did that but settings manager doesnt have all the apps which 7.10 had, like display settings21:32
maxwaine7.04 and 7.10 auto mounted all my etx3 partitions when i installed it first but hardy heron doesnt do that21:33
maxwaineScreens and Graphics option is missing from the menu :(21:37
maxwainedo you know why Odd-rationale?21:39
Odd-rationalesorry, no...21:39
maxwainedo u know how i can make my paritions show up in the sidepanel of the file manager?21:40

SionideOdd-rationale, listening...? or reading :p21:45
maxwaineany other xubuntu guru's in here?21:45
Sionidei'm no guru maxwaine.. my settings manager has display settings in it though *shrug*21:46
maxwaineeven mine does...but cant change display driver from that menu, we can only do that with "screen and graphics" menu or app lol21:47
maxwaine"screen and graphics" also gives us the option to choose the monitor manually, thats the only way we can get all the supported resolutions21:50
floatingis there a way to see how much space would installing some apps with apt-get take space ?21:50
floatingprior to installing21:50
Odd-rationalefloating: apt-cache show packagename21:51
Odd-rationaleSorry, it is "aptitude show packagename"21:53
floatingnice, i write that down^^21:54
maxwaineBy the way in 8.04 "screen and graphics" option can be found in usr/share/applications :d....its just that i dont know why its missing from the menu21:56
TheSheepit used to bei n the system menu...21:58
maxwaineu mean in the beta of 8.04??22:01
maxwainei booted 7.10 from the cd and it looks more complete, is it advisible to go back or keep 8.04 hardy heron hmmmmm :-X22:03
Stroganofffloating: sudo apt-get -s install nameofthepackage22:25
Ultraputzis there a way to make apt-get flush everything not absolutely required to be on the drive?22:26
StroganoffUltraputz: apt-get -y clean22:26
Stroganoffsudo apt-get autoremove22:26
Ultraputzthat did it. freed up about 600 megs.22:27
Stroganoffit removes the .debs from /var/cache/apt22:28
Stroganoffautoremove uninstalls orphan packages22:28
Ultraputzupgraded to heron, knew there'd be a lot of reside, but autoremove only coughed up 50 megs. couldn't remember the other22:28
Ultraputzthank you very much22:28
Ultraputzheron is actually faster than gutsy on this thing.22:29
Stroganoffit is generally IMHO22:29
zoredacheif you feel advanced and you want to really clean things up you could also try running deborphan22:29
Stroganoffdeborphan should be the same as autoremove22:30
Ultraputzopenbsd is not as happy as it could be on my server machine, so i'm planning to give ubuntu server a crack at it, then i'll finalyl have a reason to actually learn my way around debian usefully.22:31
zoredacheit isn't... autoremoves packages that were not installed manually...   deborphan is interactive and it will ask you what packages you want to keep and then it will find things to remove22:31
zoredacheof course if you don't know what packages you actually want to keep then you could make  big mess of things22:32
Ultraputzhandy to know it exists.22:34
floatingwow.. qbittorrent is over 42MiB22:57
floatingMB22:58
floatingbut looks nice22:59
riddleboxis xubuntu good for an ibm laptop, like 300mhz with 64mb ram?23:28
TheSheepriddlebox: too low ram23:28
Odd-rationaleriddlebox: I'd use something eve lighter. Like Puppy or dsl23:29
riddleboxok23:29
riddleboxthanks23:29
riddleboxI was handed this old laptop and would like to use it,even though I have three others23:29
TheSheepriddlebox: it would work fine with text-mode linux23:30
riddleboxI wonder if I can upgrade the ram, and just use it as a mythfrontend23:30
riddleboxbut probably doesnt have the capacity for alot23:31
riddleboxmaybe its more than 300mhz, its a pentium 2 I know that23:31
liopordhello, where can i turn to to get some support for ubuntu?23:36
liopordXubuntu?23:36
TheSheep!xubuntu23:36
zoredachemay places... you can use irc, forums, google...23:36
zoredachemany*23:36
TheSheephmm23:37
TheSheepliopord: the best way is to ask here23:37
liopordso, am I in the right place for a question?23:37
liopordok great23:37
TheSheepubotu is slacking away again? :)23:38
zoredache!botsnack23:38
liopordI just finished installing Hardy, but I'm having a problem with screen resolution. Even though I alreay followed the FixVideoResolutionHowto which was recommended almost everywhere.23:38
liopordActually I believe I have my xorg file configured correctly, but I can't find the dialog (or don't know a coomand to change the current resolution)23:39
TheSheepliopord: settings->display settings23:40
TheSheep(or settings->setting manager->display)23:40
Volkodavwhat does xrandr say?23:41
liopordI don't know what happened here, but i don't have the 'setting' tab. only applications and 'places'. And i can't find thw settings anywhere on the system23:42
TheSheepliopord: settings submenu should be in applications23:43
Volkodavpaste your xorg23:43
liopordhehe I wish it was that simple, I only have system tab under applications23:44
TheSheepVolkodav: calm down :)23:44
kdathi all,i am wondering if that is normal i have 256mb sdram ram and 1.8Gh pentium. My proccessor with little apps is geting up to 100%.This is memory luck or processor?23:44
Volkodavhuh? <liopord> Actually I believe I have my xorg file configured correctly23:45
VolkodavI might as well look at it23:45
TheSheepliopord: this is an English version?23:45
TheSheepkdat: try running the system monitor to see what is using the cpu23:46
liopordyes, one quick question. Should I be able to find the display configuration under the app finder?23:46
TheSheepliopord: no, it's a plugin to the mcs-settings-show23:46
TheSheepliopord: you can start it from terminal with xfce-setting-show display23:47
liopordok let me try that23:48
kdatTheSheep, totem and firefox. 191 memory used of 256 and 191 of 729 swap23:48
Volkodavfirefox keeps leaking23:49
TheSheepVolkodav: version 3 is much better already23:49
Volkodavyeah right23:49
Volkodavstill a hog23:49
TheSheepit's far from perfect, of course23:49
Volkodavopera handles it memory much better23:50
TheSheepit has a substantial advantage, however: peiople are failiar with it from windows23:50
TheSheeppeople23:50
TheSheepand opera is just plain ugly ;)23:50
Volkodavoh right windoze pips23:50
TheSheepVolkodav: remember the bug #1?23:51
liopordTheSheep: thanks a lot that was it!.. I still don't understand where the 'settings' menu went :/23:51
Volkodavvaguely23:51
TheSheepliopord: if you start that xfce-settings-show without parameters, it will show you more settings23:51
VolkodavHe needs to find terminal first23:51
TheSheepVolkodav: the reason d'etre of ubuntu is to cater to windows people, I'm afraid23:52
liopordTheSheep: thanks again! I'll be roaming around, bye23:53
kdatalso have that problem, i from the rare people which have the luck of sound. After reboot some times i have and somes dont.I tried many times to solve that prob but i failed.Any ideas?23:53
TheSheepkdat: if your sound card doesn't have several hardware channes for mixing, then only one application can use it at a time -- the first one wins23:54
TheSheepkdat: you can set up pulseaudio or dmixer to solve that23:55
TheSheepkdat: there is a link for setting up pulseaudio on the wiki,23:55
TheSheepkdat: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio23:56
kdatTheSheep, all that time i tought that it was a *buntu bug!!!23:56
VolkodavTheSheep, where does it say about that reason that you seem to be afraid of ?23:56
TheSheepVolkodav: bugs.ubuntu.com23:58
Volkodavoh that23:58
TheSheepVolkodav: in particular, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/123:59
