dwidmannFuzzyTheBear: come to think of it, I see something very similar albeit it was with Ubuntu 7.0400:00
FuzzyTheBear?00:00
FuzzyTheBearurl ?00:00
mefisto___dennister: I suppose those packages aren't important to me. I haven't noticed00:00
_dennisterok, samba...amarok, amarok-xine, amarok-engines...to name a few00:01
FuzzyTheBearare you filing bug reports for all of those ?00:01
mefisto__mefisto__: they all work fine for me. maybe I have different repos enabled00:01
monkeybritchesendoftheinternet: sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart00:01

FuzzyTheBeardwidmann : thanks .. im looking ..00:02
nohelphereguess what? I fixed it!!00:02
monkeybritchesAlso try sudo dpkg-configure kdm00:02
mefisto__ejupin: see monkeybritches message ^^00:02
_dennisteron one machine it names the wrong optical device as dvd (certified, verified bug) on another it keeps telling me I can't fish onto other servers or use samba to access the files...no folders exist...yet I can access those exact folders with "fish://server/path" and "smb://server/path"00:02
monkeybritchesTo reset it as default00:02
ejupinmefisto: that was the first thing I tried on my own.. said something about no KDM in system00:03
_dennisterone of those 2 servers is on gutsy, other a little-bit-better-hardy00:03
nohelphereall I had to do was start Kicker and change a setting00:04
_dennistersorry to complain, but this is the worst experience with a k/ubuntu distro release I've ever had...and I lost a 300G hdd less than 2 years old...freezer trick got me my data tho :)00:05
FuzzyTheBearhold on a second .. the message in that post shows  ALERT! /dev/sdb1 does not exist   ... but mine is a straight ALERT  does not exist .. like it dosent know where to look ..00:05
_dennisterobviously that hdd isn't the distros fault...but u can see why i'm not a happy little girl00:06
mefisto__FuzzyTheBear: did you get the uuid right in the kernel line?00:06
FuzzyTheBeardwidmann .. that more or less confirms that my grub entry would not be right ?00:06
FuzzyTheBeari never had a uuid for that drive ..00:06
FuzzyTheBearin fact .. im trying to find how to determine the uuid for a drive00:06
mefisto__sudo vol_id /dev/sda1  (or whatever partition you have kubuntu installed on)00:07
FuzzyTheBearID_FS_UUID=b7f39389-d992-47ac-95be-8a27b12d892c00:09
FuzzyTheBearso that part worked .. great00:09
FuzzyTheBearvol_id /dev/hdd1 in my case ..00:09
x-X-xis it a good idea to buy a laptop from america for the uk ??00:10
FuzzyTheBearif you dont care about the euro sign ..00:10
x-X-xhuh?00:10
FuzzyTheBearthe euro .. us laptops dont have that symbol on the keyboard ..00:11
FuzzyTheBearplus they're made for 60 herts 120 volt .. so .. again you check that00:11
monkeybritchesIt would only be a slight inconvenience.00:11
FuzzyTheBearmight need a different adaptor00:11
monkeybritchesMost notebook power adapters have built-in voltage switching so that *shouldn't* be a problem.00:12
FuzzyTheBearpower cords plugs ?  :)00:12

monkeybritchesHi00:47
stoffermefisto__, the bug report online says that removing my profile directory will fix the problem.  Isn't there stuff in there that I need?00:47
mefisto__stoffer: you'll lose your firefox setup, extensions, bookmarks, themes, etc. you can back up your bookmarks (bookmarks.html) and make a list of the extensions you want, then delete the profile and start again.00:49
mefisto__just put bookmarks.html back where it was after FF has created a new profile dir00:50
stofferin that case I already have my bookmarks backed up, but after removing the profile folder (just cut it and put it somewhere else) firefox won't start00:51

ere4si!java03:54
ubottuTo install a Java compiler/interpreter on Ubuntu, look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java - For the Sun Java runtime install sun-java5-jre from the !Multiverse repository. Enable the backports repository on Edgy to install sun-java6-jre. Please don't use Adept to install Java if you are on Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) or earlier.03:54

BonesolTeraDyneshamu: yes, but you have to make sure you point out the correct package.03:59
shamuah; it's a http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355 dapper package, not  a plain old dapper package03:59
zhopoyebi installed  kubuntu-kde4-desktop alittle while ago, and i tired to apt-get remove it but its still on my system how do i remove it completely?04:25
DreadKnightmovie time04:26
Tiduszhopoyeb: re-install it thru aptitude (sudo aptitude install kubuntu-kde4-desktop) then remove it04:26
Tidusthru aptitude04:26
zhopoyebok04:26
Tidusaptitude tracks the dependencies of what you install and if you remove it, it'll remove anything that it installed but is no longer required because nothing depends on it04:26

alucardromeroAnybody know how to make WICD connect on boot?  For some reason it's not doing it on 8.04.04:27
Tidusand i have a question.  is there any scriptable way to quickly toggle desktop compositing under kde4? I play some opengl games and when compositing is enabled the game gets about 5 frames/second04:28
alucardromeroWhoa.04:28
Tidusi have the same performance issue under windows vista when aero is enabled, but there is an option in the launcher properties that can disable aero when that program starts04:29
Tidusi know that doesn't exist in kde4 (yet) but i'd be willing to have a shortcut on the desktop that i can click on to quickly turn it on / off instead of having to slog thru systemsettings04:30
ere4siTidus: someone in #kubuntu-kde4 might know04:31
bleakedTidus: search kde-apps.org.. there is actually a plasmoid in the shape of a lightswitch which does just that..04:32
Tidushm... thanks bleaked04:32

hellhounddoes anyone know where I can download the new firefox 3 theme?  I would like to edit it, but keep some of the OS interegration stuff04:45
hellhoundwhen i change the font colors in kde4 it does not seem to change in all places.  for example d3lphin's left bookmark text is left the same for unselected and in several applications the txt on buttons is not changed either... does anyone know how to make sure that these are all the same?04:49
Tidushellhound: that's because d3lphin is qt3 (and kde3)04:52
Tidusif you're on kde4 you should be using dolphin/kde404:52

jMerliNare there any guides on ubgrading from KDE 3 to KDE 4?04:55
ere4si!kde404:55
ubottuKDE 4.0.3 is the latest major release of the K Desktop Environment. KDE 4.0.3 packages can be found at http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.3.php - Support in #kubuntu-kde404:55
dwidmannjMerliN: they can be install concurrently04:56
dwidmann*ed04:56
jMerliNdwidmann: which packages then would be recommended?04:57
dwidmannjMerliN: kubuntu-kde4-desktop for starters04:57
dwidmannjMerliN: then just search the packages by name for "kde4" and you'll see a lot of others that you might be interested in04:58
dwidmannjMerliN: I'd personally also recommend yakuake-kde4, kdegames-kde4, kget-kde4, and koffice-kde404:58
firecrotchAlright, I know that I know how to do this because I've done it before, but I forget how so.... how do I install packages that are held back?04:58
jMerliNty :)04:59
hellhoundTidus: what is the command for dolphin versus d3lphin?04:59
dwidmannfirecrotch: I would just try to apt-get install the packages that were held back - maybe an apt-get dist-upgrade wouldn't hurt either.04:59
dwidmannhellhound: /usr/lib/kde4/bin/dolphin05:00

dwidmannfirecrotch: awesome05:02
hellhounddwidmann: I got no such file or directory05:02
dwidmannhellhound: then you might need to install it first if you don't already have dolphin installed05:02
firecrotchHello, nimrod! Welcome to #kubuntu05:03
nimrodsomebody who can tell me how to compile a sourcecode in python...i cant seem to find information on google, just talk around05:03
nimrodthanks, firecrotch05:03
dwidmannnimdrod: python code isn't compiled, it's interpreted (well, it's a bit of both really, but short story, you don't have to compile it like you would a C program)05:04
hellhounddwidmann: i have dolphin 0.9.2... the actual command for it is d3lphin though... I do not think there is a differance because dolphin (d3lphin) is within my kde4 menu05:04
nimrodi see, dwidmann05:05
Tidushellhound, no, d3lphin != dolphin05:05
Hydrogend3lphin = dolphin for kde305:05
Hydrogenoddly enough05:05
dwidmannhellhound: dolphin = v 1.0.205:05
Tidusdolphin 1.0.2 here05:05
nimrodso, how can i make a executable file of the sourcecode?05:05
Tidusand the command to start it is actually 'dolphin'05:06
dwidmannhellhound: sudo apt-get install dolphin-kde405:06
Tidushellhound: what version of kubuntu are you on? 7.10 or 8.04?05:06
dwidmannnimrod: it's already executable, just like a bash script, just run it like "python /path/to/file"05:06
jMerliNwhat's the command for the install-time partition manager?  i forget -.-05:06
dwidmannjMerliN: you're probalby referring to qtparted05:07

dwidmannhellhound: dolphin >>>>> d3lphin .... no reason not to use it all the time :)05:08

Tidushellhound: install kubuntu-kde4-desktop05:11

nimrodwhy doesn't python want to start :/05:13
Tidushellhound: it should... not sure though05:13
dwidmannnimrod: what does it say?05:13
Tidusi just use konqueror as my browser05:13
nimrodit doesn't say anything, it just show hour-glass, and then it disapare05:14
dwidmannnimrod: pull up konsole, and run the command from there05:15
Hydrogennimrod: how are you trying to start it...05:15
nimrodok, would tyr that, dwidmann05:15
TeslaTonyere4si: I'm mostly worried about issues when a new version comes out. I don't want to get the program accidentally overwritten05:15
hellhoundTidus: when i change the font colors in kde4 it does not seem to change in all places.  for example d3lphin's left bookmark text is left the same for unselected and in several applications the txt on buttons is not changed either... does anyone know how to make sure that these are all the same?05:15
nimrodhydrogen: i only click the icon05:16
hellhoundTidus:  opps  i meant..05:16
hellhoundinstall: missing destination file operand after `kubuntu-kde4-desktop'05:16
hellhoundTry `install --help' for more information.05:16
ere4siTeslaTony: put the file in your home folder and a link in /usr/bin then05:16
Tidushellhound: sudo aptitude install kubuntu-kde4-desktop05:17
nimrodhow do i start a program in the Konsoll?05:17
dwidmannnimrod: just type "python /path/to/the/program" and press enter (replacing /path/to/the/program with the actual path)05:17
nimrodah05:18
nimrodthanks05:18
jMerliNooo kde4 is pretty05:18
TeslaTonyere4si: I'll give that a shot. Thanks05:18

dwidmannjMerliN: maybe it'd have reminded me if I'd have ever used it ...05:20
nimrodwhen i try to open pype in the konsoll05:21
jMerliNlol05:21
dwidmannIMO the artwork has stepped up a notch. That's probably a lot of what you're seeing jMerliN05:21
jMerliNfunction > form for me05:22
HydrogenjMerliN: I'm not all that impressed with the default look05:22
HydrogenI love the transparent plasma themes though :)05:22
dwidmannjMerliN: but both can be nice ... especially seeing as the people who do the artwork are generally not the people who do the code anyway.05:22
ISS_studentI tried KDE4 and hated it, so I went back to 3.5.905:22
jMerliNi'll run both05:22
jMerliNi'm repartitioning atm, I need more space for my linux partition lol05:23
nimrodi would try to restart the pc05:23

ISS_studentI had to switch to the 64 bit version so I could get full access to my 4 gig of memory lol05:23
dwidmannISS_student: I think that'll be happening a lot more over the course of the next couple of years.05:24
Hydrogen32bit can access 4g of mem..05:24
ISS_studentWhen I did a free in 32 bit it only showed 3 gig05:25
TeslaTonyHydrogen: Sometimes a 32 bit OS will only show 3-3.5 gigs05:25
dwidmannHydrogen: doesn't that = memory remapping = performance hit?? I haven't done much reading on it, but I do recall seeing something along those lines05:25
HydrogenNo, 32bit can access 4g, anything > 4g it can't05:25
Hydrogenafaik05:25
ere4siI thought the limit was 3.2G05:26
dwidmannI forget how much 64-bit can access, but it's *A LOT*05:26
ISS_studentI figured as long as the 64 bit version runs ok I'll ujse it05:26
TeslaTonyHydrogen: Hypothetically true, yes, but not the case in reality. Something to do with how memory controllers are made or something05:26
jMerliNdwidmann: 16 petabytes05:26
TeslaTonyExabytes05:27
dwidmannyeah, I thought it was up in the exabytes ... at any rate, yeah, a lot.05:27
jMerliNpetabytes > exabytes -.-05:27
TeslaTonyEither way, an amount of ram we are unlikely to see for some decades05:27
dwidmannTeslaTony: unlikely but not impossible05:28
ISS_studentI remember the comodore 64 lol now I have 4 gig in a laptop05:28
jMerliNTeslaTony: log_2(32) * ~2 = 10, roughly 10 years from now we'll be using that much memory in our desktops05:28
jMerliN(at least if the trend holds)05:28
dwidmannI wonder about hard drives though, they seem to be approaching their limits ... I wonder what will replace them in the future.05:29
TeslaTonyWow...really? I knew processing power was going up like crazy, but I didn't think Moore's Law held for RAM05:29
jMerliNdwidmann: holographic storage05:29
dwidmannjMerliN: oh?05:30
TeslaTonyHolographic of flash...flash in the near term05:30
jMerliNholographic has the theoretical capability of storing hundreds of terabytes in the size of a single harddisk (as we know now) and having terabytes/s bandwidth speeds, with almost 0 seek time05:30
jMerliNbut it's expensive as hell to manufacture atm :P05:30
dwidmannjMerliN: buy me one ... lol05:31
TeslaTonyNot to mention impossible to manufacture with more than a few kilobytes right now, too (it may be megabytes now...)05:31
ubuntui need help05:31
ISS_studentPrice will drop just like memory has. I got 4 gig of 5300 DDR 2 for 75 bucks05:31
TeslaTonyubuntu: You're in the right place. Ask away05:31
jMerliNso, is the 32bit vs 64bit argument valid in linux as it is windows?05:32
ISS_studentYes05:32
dwidmannISS_student: much cheaper than I got off with ... cost me $300 for 4 gig of DDR305:32
ubuntuinstall lilo  in ubuntu hardy, no have dvd hardy, waht comand05:32
ubuntu?05:32
jMerliNi just got 4gigs of ram in my laptop lol05:32
jMerliNwas cheap05:32
dwidmannjMerliN: me too :) ... cheap indeed, I think it was $85ish05:32
ISS_studentJMelin so did I and that's why I switched to 64 bit Kubuntu05:33
ubuntui play dvd kubuntu live cd, i need comand install lilo in hardy, no have dvd live05:33
jMerliNwell i *WOULD* switch to 64bit linux05:33
jMerliNbut05:33
ubuntui write aptitude install lilo, but need dvd live05:33
jMerliNthere is only one thing stopping me: drivers05:33
jMerliNi have to use ndiswrapper for my wireless (go broadcom!)05:33
dwidmannjMerliN: for?05:33
TeslaTonyubuntu: Two questions: Did you already install Kubuntu, or are you still on the livecd? Secondly, what's your native language?05:34
jMerliNand the windows installation I have is 32bit, so I can't pull the drivers off of it for ndiswrapper like I'm doing for the 32bit ones05:34
dwidmannjMerliN: poor you .... I've got intel 3945 .... works flawlessly out of the box :)05:34
jMerliNunless I use wine to unpackage the installer from dell05:34
ubuntukubuntu is live cd05:34
ubuntumi native linguage is portuguese05:34
jMerliNdwidmann: i do believe I have the dell 1385 aka broadcom 438505:35
ubuntui mount hardy drive, but no have comand install lilo, i no have cd live ubuntu hardy05:35
jMerliNndiswrapper made very short work of making the drivers work, but I tried to use native methods for a while with no luck05:35
ubuntumi system in hd is hardy05:36
ISS_studentI've got a Intel wireless and works great with Kubuntu. I think the Linux community has done a much better job with 64 bit than Windows has05:36
jMerliNwell of course05:37
ubuntuwhat execute terminal for gmount iso function05:37
jMerliNbut drivers are the only things holding me back from 64bit :z05:37
TeslaTonyubuntu: The grub bootloader should be automatically installed for dual booting, but if you want lilo it should be "sudo apt-get install lilo"05:37
jMerliNi'd actually like to learn x64 instruction set, I still use x86 to do assembly stuff :\05:37
ubuntui have cd live hardy in iso05:38
dwidmannDoing better than the bottom of the barrel isn't hard though ISS_student05:38
ISS_studentTrue dwidmann but unfortunately there are still some things I have to use Windows for05:38
dwidmannI play a few games in Windows ... that's about it. I wish Vmware would get video hardware acceleration nailed, then I'd never have to reboot again :)05:39
Tidusthat's ok.  i have to deal with a marvell chipset on my wireless card :P05:39
Tidusdwidmann: what games?05:39
holycowhasn't marvell open sourced everything?05:40

jMerliNwine is horrendous really05:42
jMerliNI worked with the dev team for a few months05:42
Tidusdwidmann: i play WoW on linux using just straight up wine... better performance than actually using windows05:42
dwidmannTidus: last I checked I couldn't get D1 to run in wine, maybe this has changed, FEAR was silver at best last time I looked it up, RA2 was crashy last time I ran it in WINE05:42
jMerliNI've done win32 development for years and years, I'm so familiar with all of the APIs and I've done a lot of low-level development and undocumented stuff, including looking at windows rdisassemblies05:43
jMerliNbut the problem with wine is their development strategy05:43

ErkiDerLoonyHi!11:42
Tidushi11:42
ErkiDerLoonyMy xine does not find any plugin to handle mp3 files.11:42
ErkiDerLoonyAlthough I have libmad0 and libxine1-ffmpeg and libxine1-plugins installed.11:42
osh_What's a good project management (or portfolio management) program for Linux? Best one I've found is KPlato but it's sorely lacking in features...11:42
ErkiDerLoonyThere also exists a /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.20/xineplug_decode_mad.11:42
ErkiDerLoonyIt seems xine only cannot associate mp3 with this libmad.11:42
ErkiDerLoonyI'm using the recent 8.04 release.11:43
Tidusso am i, and xine is playing .mp3 just fine11:43
ErkiDerLoonyThe most funny thing is that mp3 support worked well until I rebooted this morning.11:43
ErkiDerLoonyHere only mplayer does.11:43
ErkiDerLoonyBut xine (and amarok as it relys on xine) does not!11:43
Tidusi'm on kubuntu 8.04/KDE411:44
ErkiDerLoonyMplayer uses libmad as far as i can tell from the console output.11:44
ErkiDerLoonyIm using KDE311:44

TidusErkiDerLoony: so i take it you have libxine1-plugins installed...11:46
ErkiDerLoonyYes.11:47
Tidusthat's just an empty package by the way11:47
ErkiDerLoonyI also already purged and reinstalled the whole amarok/xine thing.11:47
ErkiDerLoonyOk.11:47
Tidusdid you get my pm?11:48
ErkiDerLoonyIt installed libxine1-ffmpeg and libxine1-misc-plugins.11:48

foormeahi. i think i've found a bug in kubuntu hardy kde 3.5.9... my system language is english, i need french support and chinese support. english and french work like a charm without chinese activated. when i activate chinese: i cannot type accentuated french characters that require a modifier (ex: cannot type ê, it will type ^e), and chinese will only work in KDE apps. if i "im-switch -z <mylocale> -s scim" instead of "-s scim-bridge", then everything wor15:14
foormeaks fine, but katapult won't work anymore......15:14

foormeajhutchins: :) no what i meant is that i need the support for the 3 layouts15:16
foormeaokay let me try to re-explain properly, sorry :)15:17
foormeai need 3 keyboard layouts : french, english, chinese15:17
foormeaif i don't install chinese, then     french and english    work like a charm. can type what i want in the 2 different layouts, the layouts work fine15:18
foormeaif i install chinese support/scim, then, when i want to type french (i mean french, and not type chinese using azerty instead of qwerty...), then i cannot type those 'special' french characters that need a modifier15:19
foormeaif i ""im-switch -z <mylocale> -s scim" (default seems to be " -s scim-bridge" under hardy?), then it works fine again, BUT katapult won't 'receive' anything i type into it15:20
foormeai hope i'm clearer now :)15:20
foormea(other problem is: with the default settings, i can only type chinese in kde apps. with the im-switch trick, i can type chinese everywhere)15:21

stdinScorpKing: try http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/DRU_Disc_Remastering_Utility19:36
ekDexterF: For the most part, yes. I've had some systems take over an hour to install on.19:37
ScorpKingstdin: ah nice! thanks :)19:37
DexterFek: seriusly..? I mean, I installed 7.04 in less than half an hour on an old athlon xp, and what totally weirds me out is that it keeps telling me about how it removes packag.... finished this moment :D19:39
ekDexterF: Yup. Seriously. In fact, it took over an hour installing on a P4-2.4GHz with 2 gigs of RAM with 7.10.19:40
ScorpKingkaminix: did you try changing the filename? what does vlc do?19:41
ekBut, 8.04 on the same machine seemed to whiz by.19:41
DexterFek: well, this is 8.04 on that laptop. I don't quite get why it *installs* all the OOo stuff and *then* removes it again19:42
ScorpKingkaminix: launch it from konsole and maybe something will show up19:42
kaminixScorpKing: 1) The first filename has no strange characters at all, the one in crash one. 2) The bug only appears a little now and then, and I do not know when. =/ Would've installed the debug packages and stuff if I did19:42

eliascould you have a look if it is set for you on your systems?19:47
BoingoI cannot eject with the button, or with "eject" from terminal.19:47
ScorpKingkaminix: could be. so far it looks like the file is invalid but the player/libs does not report or fix it. still looking though19:47
