knmstrflxAfter a quick read i've been led to believe that on older, slower hardware Xubuntu will perform better than Ubuntu.  Is this accurate?00:01
teh_b00neiOkay, pulled the card out, ifconfig shows eth0 and lo, only shows one NIC, loverly.00:01
teh_b00neiknmstrflx: Yes.00:01

KindOneI am Having trouble connecting to the wifi via Xubuntu 8.04 today, but yesterday I connected (first time in days since Update from 7.10 to 8.04) while I was connected the signal strength jumped from 20% to 100% a lot. I had also Updates some stuff via Update Manager. is there any idea how I can connect ?? I am currently on Win2000 and I got the usual 78%.... is there any way I can fix this problem, Wifi card is a Linksys WMP54G Version 4.100:15

Newbimages in xubuntu are being rendered real slowly04:01
Newbvideos on youtube are going like 2 fps04:02
NewbI dont think its a cpu bottleneck cause FF is taking up at most ~70%... :(04:11
ere4siNewb: got your vid card drivers working?05:46
Newbere4si: yes05:48
Newbere4si: heh, I have been waiting for you, I got a couple more questions05:48
Newbere4si: everything seems sluggish. Enabling compositing helped a bit (i guess this puts more load on the gpu). But would a different window manager speed things up?05:50
ere4siNewb: xubuntu should not be slow - can you have a look at the command  top  in a terminal pls?05:51

ere4siNewb: you might be a candidate for a lighter window manager - with 128mb mem and 400mhz cpu - I use and recommend fluxbox - firefox-2 would be lighter as well06:13
ere4siDaftpunk: if you want to install from source   $PATH   lets you know where to put things :)06:14
Newbere4si: ok thanks, do I just get fluxbox through synaptic? and I also heard opera is fast, but i cant find it. I got a .deb and tried unpacking it using the consol but its dependant on other packages I dont have06:15
ere4siNewb: I would recommend   sudo apt-get install firefox-2 fluxbox06:15
ere4siNewb: and I would install a lighter login manager - slim is what I use - sudo apt-get install slim && sudo apt-get purge gdm06:16
Newbere4si: ok thanks. How can i remove xfce, ff 3, my current login manager afterwards>?06:18
Daftpunkis there a big difference between Ubuntu and xubuntu?06:19
ere4siNewb: sudo apt-get purge xubuntu-desktop firefox gdm - ut be warned removing firefox 3 may make ff2 unusable - common libs etc - I would remove ff3 from synaptic and check what else will be removed06:20
DaftpunkI've just downloaded ebook for ubuntu and I am just wondering whether it will be any good for me having xubuntu on my comp06:20
ere4siNewb: xubuntu is community developed on the ubuntu distro - not officially supported the last I saw - but they are the same except window managers and some apps06:21
ere4siDaftpunk: terminal commands and such are the same06:22
Newbere4si: gdm is the current login manager?06:23
aldricki cant create launchers on avant window manager... is it xfce?06:24
ere4siNewb: it should be - xubuntu and ubuntu both use gtk06:25
Newbere4si: ok how do I use fluxbox instead now?06:25
ere4sialdrick: no - it is a setup issue from what I know - there are net posts about that - google is our friend06:25

Newbere4si: thanks very much, again06:26
ere4siNewb: my pleasure - remember to right click the desktop in flux for a menu06:27
Daftpunkere4si is there a big difference between ubuntu and xubuntu?06:33
ere4siDaftpunk: of course if the book says to use a command like  sudo gedit - you use gksu mousepad06:33
ere4siDaftpunk: the apps are lighter on resources - that is the point of xubuntu06:34
Daftpunkyeah thats what i've been told. i got 1.6 Ghz Celeron and 512 MB ram on my laptop06:34

floatingim going to install win xp now over my xubuntu. i looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows but on the 2nd example, the guy does fdisk -l and he seemingly has a boot partition.. a very small one in the begin of disk. when i do fdisk -l , i dont have such small partition, and i think i dont have that kind of partition at all15:56
floatingso i am worried on doing that thing on example 115:56
floatingi have a /boot/ where is grub too but that isnt listed as its own partition in fdisk -l15:58
Stroganoffjust use the SuperGrub livecd to recover grub15:58
floatingargh i wouldnt want to15:59
floatingthat messed up my system last time15:59
Stroganoffmmmh16:00
floatingthats why im scared now.. it said something like processing... or doing.. and got stuck there16:00
Hannzfloating: if it's possible, maybe you should install winxp first, then xubuntu..16:00
floatingits not possible16:01
floatingi have already tweaked this so much that i wouldnt want to reinstall16:01
Hannzfloating: okay.. understand your feeling.. :P16:02
floatingi guess i take a "risk" .. i just dont understand all the buzz on it..16:04
floatingso i have a grub in my linux root partition and not in mbr right now ? i install win xp and it installs the win bootloader to mbr. then i go to recover grub, but it recovers it into the linux root partition and not overwrite the win in mbr... and i get stuck again16:05
floatingthats what i dont get16:05
floatingplus other things, like why the super grub boot loader hang last time..16:06
Hannzsorry i can't help.. i'm new to (x)ubuntu..16:07
mistiipu_i think i need tc command. i read the man. but it gave me headaches.         i need eth1+eth2=20k/s dl limit and 4k upload       and i dont want any eth user to consume all the trafic (while both eth1 and eth2 are online) and drain bandwidth from the other. any help?16:56

zoredachegetting traffic shapping working tends to be very difficult17:06
zoredacheif you primarily care about http traffic you can use squid to enforce the limits then firewall everything else off17:07

Chrysalisi dont know, i just finally feel at home, gnome and kde feel like unneeded bloat17:41
Chrysalisnothing wrong with them, and its good to have a choice17:41
Chrysalisbut as default xfce makes more sence, whereas gnome and kde are like extra bloat17:41
zoredachethe fact that some people like windows and mac osx seems to prove that there is a desire for a certain ammount of bloat17:42
daftpun1where are you guys from?17:42
daftpun1I am in the uk, it seem to me that linux is not a very popular platform here17:44
Chrysalisi would assume that applies to any country17:45
Chrysalisthats why you gotta get the word out ;p17:45
daftpun1I was buying a laptop recently and the store could not tell me if it's linux friendly or not17:45
daftpun1I didn't want some Vista crap again17:46
daftpun1Last time I ve seen linux was in 2001. And I was quite sceptic about it. But as I read the doco now it really was a FUD campaign17:48
Chrysaliseveryone you ask on the street pretty much thinks of linux distros are doing everything from the terminal still17:48
daftpun1that's it17:48
daftpun1I was so suprised when I saw Xubuntu17:48
daftpun1I still do lots of stuff from terminal thou but it can't be more simple17:49
daftpun1It seems to me now like windows is making lots of things very simple for users17:50
daftpun1and they have no idea how the system works and are therefore dependent on their support17:51
Chrysalisfor just internet, mail, word etc which is pretty much all people do on a computer you dont need to ever see the terminal17:51
Chrysalismy grandmother can use linux, just need someone to set it up for her17:52
daftpun1Another problem is habit17:52
daftpun1that many people got used to use windows and are not very keen on learning something new17:52
daftpun1it;s17:53
Chrysalisi think its more about having all your favorite programs working17:53
daftpun1you can make it look the same17:53
Chrysalisand the sore part (why they dont sell linux boxes) is pretty much marketing so you can go back and buy software instead of having it for free17:54
daftpun1Is all soft for free on linux?17:54
daftpun1Is there some1 selling software for linux?17:54
zoredacheyou can pay for software to run both run linux, and run on linux17:54
zoredachesee redhat and cedega as examples17:54
daftpun1are redhat and cedega not free distros?17:55

daftpun1what I loved about linux is when you need some application17:56
daftpun1just go to terminal sudo apt-get install hit enter done!17:57
Chrysalisyep, also, add/remove is pretty cool, type in what you need and finds you apps for it17:57

zoredachein the case of Ubuntu you are looking at the motu for the most part I believe18:00
zoredache!motu18:00
ubottumotu is short for Masters of the Universe. The brave souls who maintain the packages in the Universe section of Ubuntu. See  http://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU18:00
daftpun1alright i read about canonical somewhere18:01
zoredachebut you too could participate in development.  Simply join some of the development mail lists or channesl then wade in and help where you are able18:02
daftpun1I think I read something like that in the forum18:02
daftpun1I was thinking about it lol :D but with 3 days experience and almost no Idea how should this system work I don't know if I will be of much help18:03

zoredacheChrysalis: I don't believe I have that button18:05
Chrysaliswith the little circle in it, basically on every window to the left by the dropdown menu18:06
daftpun1I was suprised how many people were actually happy to help me with the questions i had18:06
daftpun1over last week or so18:06
zoredacheChrysalis: ah, that is gernally called the 'title' bar... that circle pins the window so it shows up on all workspaces18:06

daftpun1or does it use completely different programming language?18:18

zoredacheit some ways it is similar to the windows api, or to mfc18:20

realhansHi. What is so special about the 'alternative' ubuntu iso files ?18:29
zoredacherealhans: it will run on a computer with only 32mb of ram.  If you choose the expert mode you will have extreme ammount of control,  if you know what you are doing you can actually write a seed file that you can use to create repeatable installs18:30
Chrysalisi think it also doesnt run as live cd18:30
Chrysaliscould be wrong18:31
realhanswe are talking about the ubuntu 'special' iso files, not about xubuntu ?18:31
realhansnot special, i mean 'alternative'18:31
Chrysalisi think hes talkinga bout the torrent iso downloads18:31
zoredachethe alternate cd is pretty much the same across all the *buntus.  The only difference tends to be in the seed file that it is included and which packages are on the disk18:31
realhansah :) thank you ...18:32
realhans.. to all18:32
Newoobwhat difference can you see as a user between ubuntu and xubuntu?18:33
=== Newoob is now known as daftpun1
Chrysalisi think its basically not a full cd with all packages and used for upgrading from older versions and doesnt run as live cd etc18:33

Chrysalisi remember reading detailed info about it somewhere but cant find it right now18:34

GryzorXhi guys, has anyone experienced troubles installing xubuntu-desktop (8.04 LTS) ? I get a "cyan" background when trying to start XFCE session; however Gnome session works fine. floatinghmm and the reason is probably that the /boot/grub/ doesnt exists, because it is in the partition of my linux, and not a separate partition, and that xubuntu root is not moutned now18:49
