steven_hi18:20
steven_i have some question about the LTSP function of edubuntu18:20
steven_i actually don't understand it...18:21
steven_can anyone explain it a bit18:21
johnnywhat don't you understand?18:21
steven_what it really is, they say you can use clients to sign in in something with older PCs18:21
johnnyolder pcs.. much more powerful server18:22
steven_i have this, a classroom full of PIII PCs where i need to find a distro for18:23
steven_they have'nt anough RAM for ubuntu i think18:23
johnnywell ltsp will let you centralized the management of them18:23
steven_so i thought about fluxbuntu, but i read the edubuntu LTSP thing18:23
steven_on 1 PC, a faster pc18:23
johnnyyes18:23
steven_do you have to install edubuntu on the slower ones?18:24
johnnyno18:25
johnnyon the one fast one18:25
johnnyaltho edubuntu is now just an addon cd18:26
johnnyi think you can install ltsp from the alternative cd as an option directly.. or any ubuntu hardy cd18:26
johnnyvia synaptic or apt-get as usual18:26
steven_so, install edubuntu on 1 pc and install ltsp with same cd18:27
steven_other menu item18:27
johnnyif you already want it on the cd, i think you need to get the alternative hardy cd..18:29
johnnyi think i'd just get it from the internet tho personally18:29
steven_??? i don't understand that last 2 messages18:30
steven_what do i do with the slower pcs18:30
steven_livecd doesn't support it18:30
steven_also no installation18:30
steven_i cant use apt-get than right?18:30
johnnythe slower pcs network boot18:33
johnnyoff the powerful one18:33
johnnyand run almost all programs from the powerful18:33
steven_network boot?18:56
steven_how exactly? with a other type edubuntu installation18:56
johnnyhuH/18:58
johnnyno.. they download the stuff they need over the local network18:58
steven_but how18:59
johnnypxe boot18:59
steven_you can't do anything without anything installed at the pcs18:59
johnnythat's the specific name18:59
johnnyyes you can :)18:59
steven_right from bios?18:59
johnnythe pcs download the kernel, and the very basics of the operating system18:59
johnnyit happens after the bios19:00
johnnybut no disks are involved19:00
steven_they download it everytime they are rebooted19:00
johnnyunless your machines can't network boot..19:00
johnnyyes19:00
steven_howmany PCs can 1 master pc stand?19:00
johnnydepends on the spec19:00
johnnycheck the edubuntu handbook19:01
johnnyfor the equation19:01
steven_does it work good?19:01
johnnyit depends on the specs :)19:01
steven_for advanced presentation making and browsing, let's say 25 PIII 500Mhz 128 RAM and master of 512 RAM 1.6GHz or something19:02
johnnyyou'd want more ram19:02
steven_or maybe 2GHz19:02
johnnyin the master19:02
johnnyand a dual core machine i think19:02
johnnylook at the edubuntu handbook19:03
steven_and when i split to 12 - 1219:03
steven_ok19:03
steven_:p19:03
steven_ty i just read19:15
steven_256 + (128 * users) MB of memory19:15
steven_quit much19:15
steven_:p19:15
steven_does edubuntu has other advantages for schools19:16
johnnywell you could minimize it by using fluxbox and other smaller things19:16
johnnyyou can visualize the entire classroom19:16
johnnywatch screens19:16
johnnyblank screens19:16
steven_but just for a PC-)room19:16
johnnycut off people doing thngs they shouldn't19:16
steven_that's usefull indeed19:17
steven_but i think edubuntu shows that childy19:17
steven_is it possible to manage PCs in ubuntu19:18
johnnyyes.. edubuntu is just an addon cd with educational apps19:19
johnnyand some artwork19:19
johnnyyou can do it all with any ubuntu19:19
steven_aah, do you maybe know the application name? or package name?19:20
steven__aah, do you maybe know the application name? or package name?19:21
johnnyfor?19:24
