PsynoKhi0Hi, due to the instability of Hardy on my low low end test machine I've downgraded to Gutsy, and I stumbled upon this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12824/00:08
PsynoKhi0is this a definite bug?00:08
PsynoKhi0btw the CPU in both cases doesn't support throttling00:17
crimsunmartyn: hmm, are you implying that sound is not audible through speakers?00:39
martynYep - that is correct.00:39
martynWorks fine through headphones.00:39
crimsunplease download and run the alsa-info.sh script.00:39
crimsun(linked from both https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and my LP profile)00:40
crimsunmartyn: just ping me if you need further assistance.00:49
martyncrimsum http://pastebin.ca/1021413 - not sure how to ping you so if you are still about here is the pastebin link (it was on a box that was switched off - I needed to put it on, install ssh, vsftp and then copy the alsa-info.sh across.00:53
crimsunI'm here, just scrambling across different workstations00:54
martynOK - sorry for not been able to ping you - not sure how to do that. Only just started using the IRC resource!00:57
crimsunthat's ok, it's just: crimsun: ping00:57
martyncrimsun: ping - ok - I'll know for next time.00:59
crimsungreat00:59
crimsunhmm01:01
crimsunit looks like that paste was cut off at line 27901:01
crimsunmartyn: please rerun the script using --debug01:03
martyncrimsun:ping http://pastebin.ca/1021421 Here is the re-run script report01:07
crimsunok, sec.01:07
martynLooks like same thing?01:08
crimsunhuh, well.  Yes.01:08
crimsunare you sticking with gutsy for any particular reason?01:08
martynNot at all... it is an older system but just haven't got around to uploading it. I have Hardy on other systems and will happily dist-upgrade...01:09
martyn.. sorry .. upgrading it...01:09
crimsunok, because a newer ALSA driver should resolve that.01:10
martynalright - will be a long process because it isn't the fastest system about (Acer Travelmate 2200). Thanks for advice. Will feedback if you are still about/awake when it is done.01:11
crimsunI'm EDT (-0400 GMT/UTC)01:11
martynOh - Ok... makes sense. It is 1:12am here! (UK).01:12
LeFishhi! would anyone be so kind and help me with my internet navigator keyboard under xfce?01:33
LeFishi really did try pretty much anything i know and the special keys just wont work01:34
mackesxubuntu rocks01:42
mackesI mean really- It is the best lean disto on the market.01:42

litlebudaif you select this one it will automagically select all the others :)03:08
nubuntu_litlebuda: look what i get in terminal: Package openoffice.org is not available, but is referred to by another package.03:09
nubuntu_This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or03:09
nubuntu_is only available from another source03:09
nubuntu_E: Package openoffice.org has no installation candidate03:09

nubuntu_also, how do i get a sound volume control up into my panel?05:54
nubuntu_knock, knock05:58
nubuntu_can someone please refresh my memory on how to set up menu to completely delete files rather than moving them to trash?06:16
nubuntu_also, how do i get a sound volume control up into my panel?06:16
nubuntu_sil vouz play06:17
nubuntu_por favor, please06:17
drashhi nubuntu, for the sound volume control, right-click panel > add item ..06:17
nubuntu_drash, a window came up axing me for a device, what does xubuntu want here?06:19
nubuntu_wait, i tink it just wanted 'default'06:19
drashprobably your sound card device06:19
drashthat should work if you got only one sound card yes06:20
drashgdluck06:20
nubuntu_drash, ok, think i got it.  i just installed the suite of utilities that come bundled with 'disk usage analyser' but none showed up in menu, any clue why not?06:21
drashno sorry, unfamiliar with those utilities06:21
drashitems not showing up in the menu though can be fixed by analysing the appropriate .desktop file(s) that package installed ..06:22
nubuntu_k, thanks06:23
drash.. and adjusting the line that starts with "Categories" to something xubuntu understands06:23
drashno prob06:23
drashcheck how some of your working menu items describe themselves, they're in /usr/share/applications06:24
nubuntu_maybe over my head06:26
drashnah, take it slow, it's only text files06:26
drashif you paste the content of the .desktop file to paste.ubuntu.com I'll be glad to have a look06:29
VencabotHey, Xubuntu! :D I was wondering if there was any way to keep Xubuntu's (Xfce's?) default screensaver from seeing the computer as idle when a gamepad is being used as input. Anyone know?09:29
VencabotA lot of Googling has come up empty. Seems like I'm one of few people having this problem.09:30

TheJudasPriesthm.. how long does it normally take to install xubuntu on a ten-year-old system?10:19
TheJudasPriestas long as it takes to get a reply around here it seems10:22
rollingdownthedrTheJudasPriest: depends on the memory you have mostly10:31
TheJudasPriest128MB i believe10:31
rollingdownthedrTheJudasPriest: should be about an hour or so - depends on if it gets hung accessing the net...10:32
TheJudasPriesthah! the machine im putting it on isnt networked yet so..10:32
rollingdownthedrTheJudasPriest: well - less than an hour I would think10:35
TheJudasPriestcheers RDTDR10:35

TheJudasPriestwell got it up and runnning11:29
TheJudasPriesteverything seems great except.. it wont play any audio CD11:30
drashdid you install any additional packages Priest ?11:31
TheJudasPriestno sir. only the base installation11:31
TheJudasPriest(used the alternate CD)11:31
drashyou might want to do that first, i'll check my bookmarks for a nice overview , brb11:32
drashhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu11:32
drashhas lots of good stuff for audio and video11:33
TheJudasPriestcheers mate. the only thing stopping me, really is that the machine isnt hooked up to the net11:34
drashow that's for another day the i suppose, yw11:34
TheJudasPriestyes sir11:35
drashcould it be that you have to "unmute" the speakers ? also a common thing we tend to forget ..11:35
TheJudasPriestuh let me go check11:35
drashhappens all the time, gdluck11:36
TheJudasPriestwell this is embarassing...11:37
drashlet us now how it went, we'll whistle some tunes if it doesn't work11:37
TheJudasPriesthow the heck do i unmute it?! theres no audio controller like there is in GNOME11:37
drashyou can add one to the xfce panel on top11:38
TheJudasPriestwell im in the settings manager and in the sounds menu11:38
drashright-click and go for the 'add item' option11:38
TheJudasPriestbut it only gives me a drop down with the options of 'default' and an amalgam or letters and numbers which is probably my audio setup11:39
TheJudasPriestbrb11:39
drashyes that sounds like what you're after11:39
drashok11:39
Ben_Cshello. i have a problem on Hardy that wasn't on 7.10: i have no subtitles. not in vlc and not in Totem. although dragging the subtitle file onto a played movie on vlc shows subtitles, but then the movie can't be paused/controlled. please help!11:41
TheJudasPriestwell.. it seems that attempting to drag volume control to the panel only adds a tiny space11:42
drashafter adding it to the panel you can right click again but now look for properties11:43
drashHi Ben_Cs, checked Totem's preferences for subs ?11:44
Ben_Csdrash: yes. naming the subtitle the same works for totem, but doesn't help VLC11:45
drashin vlc the settings are burried somewhere deep (check the 'show advanced options' in right bottom corner)11:46
drashit works, question of going through all those options, vlc has loads11:46
Ben_Csdrash: auto load subtitles is marked11:47
drashin vlc ?11:47
Ben_Csdrash: yes11:47
drashi'll check my settings, brb11:47
TheJudasPriestgrr11:48
drashno go Priest ?11:48
TheJudasPriestthe volume control just refuses to show up11:49
drashah yes, it works if you open the 'add item' stuff again, but instead of hitting 'add' you drag it onto the panel11:49
TheJudasPriestyes ive been dragging it11:50
drashwell that's the end of my help-desk-rope i'm afraid :)11:50
Ben_Cssubtitles auto detection paths:    ./Subtitles, ./subtitles             is it ok?11:50
drashBen_Cs: yes, simplest thing is to make sure the movie and sub is in the same folder anyway11:51
TheJudasPriestthanks anyway, drash!11:51
drashyou're welcome11:52
drashBen_Cs: did you activate any of those overlays and made sure they can see a font for drawing the subtitles on screen ?11:52
drashmine uses freetype2 renderer and a bit further down this has a separate entree where i gave it a path to a nice screen font11:53
Ben_Csdrash: i have Default11:56
Ben_Csoh never mind i gotta go11:57
Ben_Csthanks anyway11:57
drashok bye11:57
drashno prob11:57
TheJudasPriestseems to have another problem.. wont mount the cd rom drive11:57
drashdid you try to mount it 'manually' from a console ?11:58
TheJudasPriestnope, only trying through the GUI11:58
drashin Thunar ? the volume management or what is it called again ?11:59
TheJudasPriesti added a device mounter to the top panel and have been clicking on it through there11:59
drashyes that's a rather confusing panel app, could never use it myself12:00
TheJudasPriestoh well, ill stop trying with it then12:00
drashopen Thunar and check the prefs there, it's easy12:00
TheJudasPriesttrying now12:01
drashonly takes a second, look for the advanced tab on the right, below is a link to the volume management enabler12:01
TheJudasPriestwell its all enabled12:07
drashthat's a start, i just thought of something i had to do after upgrading gutsy to hardy12:08
drashthe new pulseaudio system ..12:08
drashdo you have the pulseaudio daemon running ?12:08
drashsystem monitor shows that kind of info btw12:09
TheJudasPriestno clue. this is the first thing ive tried to do (apart from changing the themes to human)12:09
TheJudasPriestill go check12:09
TheJudasPriestonly a dbus daemon running12:10
kripzgot xubuntu 8.04 amd64 + opera 9.5 beta 2 amd 64, can i get/use java?12:10
TheJudasPriestno pulseaudio12:10
drashyou can launch one via a console, key in "pulseaudio -D"12:10
TheJudasPriestwithout quotations12:11
drashyes indeed, forgot to add that12:11
TheJudasPriestkay12:11
TheJudasPriesthmm12:13
TheJudasPriestwell i keyed it in and told me it wasnt installed so i keyed in the command to install it and im guessing i need to be networked to do so12:13
drashcould be, i upgraded the lot from a gutsy xubuntu, thought pulse came standard on hardy ..12:14
TheJudasPriestoh no...12:15
TheJudasPriestwhen i was burning the image in Ubi it had an error right at the end of burning12:15
TheJudasPriestcould this be what was missing?!12:15
drashcould very well be12:15
TheJudasPriestyarrr!12:15
TheJudasPriestso in simple terms i have to wait until im networked till i can get audio up and running?12:16
drashyou can always try to put the cd back in and instead of installing ther's an option at the first screen to test the crc on the iso and burn stuff you did ..12:16
TheJudasPriestyes i tested the integrity of the disc before i installed and it said everything was 100% Okay12:17
drashconfusing .. without connection there isn't much i can think off i'm afraid12:18
TheJudasPriesti should have a wireless network card before the end of the week so its no big drama12:19
drashpretty sure though PulseAudio is on xubuntu 8.04, that's the one you're using ?12:19
TheJudasPriestyes sir. alternate Cd installation (if it makes any difference)12:19
drashno none that i know off, but then again, i'm only dabbling in xubuntu myself with trial and loads of error12:20
TheJudasPriestnot like im a linux noob myself either (been onboard since Fedoa Core 3) but this is my first shot with XFCE12:21
drashyes it's those tiny little differences that make it hard at first, at least you seem to have the xorg.conf etcetera covered, took me a week to get compiz going grrr12:23
TheJudasPriestevery distro has its own form of initiation12:23
drashspoken as a true Priest haha12:24
drashhave you tried the #ubuntu channel btw ? Seems to be more active than this one12:25
TheJudasPriesthavent been on there to talk about xubuntu. you think id get my questions answered?12:26
drashhave seen loads of questions there that looked slightly off-topic, but pulse and audio topics shouldn't be a problem i think12:26
drashgive it a shot, more eyes on a problem can't hurt12:27
TheJudasPriestof course not12:27
TheJudasPriestwell12:36
TheJudasPriestthat was futile12:36
drashsundays maybe .. can't seem to find a simple solution myself at the moment grrr, ah well, maybe it's time for a bbreak12:40
kripzusing xubuntu 8.04 amd64 and opera 9.5b2 amd64, how do i get java working?12:40
TheJudasPriestyeah just getting a dark french coffee and turning in the old system12:42
drashkripz: you can activate java via Synaptic12:44
kripzdrash, which package?12:45
drashi'll check, there are a few options, brb12:46
drashsun-java6-bin12:46
drashthat's the official java from sun, also sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin12:47
kripzdrash, i cant see sun-java6-plugin?12:49
drashkripz: you must activate some extra repositories for that, proprietary driver etc..12:50
drashVia Synaptic GUI or manually uncommenting some lines in your sources.list ..12:51
drashafter that it should show up12:52
kripzdrash, everything is ticked for repositories except for source12:52
kripzand http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu is checked12:52
drashi'll check where that package is coming from, brb12:53
drashit's from the multiverse repo12:54
kripzmaybe im missing some sources from the third-pqrty tab12:55
drashcould be, but both other java packages mentioned also come from multiverse repo, a bit strange12:56
kripzdrash maybe the plug in only appears for x86?12:59
drashyes that's a possibility, i'm not sure13:00
drashthe plugin is also installable if you point you're firefox (or other mozilla browser) to sun's website13:02
drashthat's an alternative route untill you can clear-up the repo confusion13:02

daftpunkProblem is that addons that didnt work on firefox-2 are now showing under firefox 3 as installed and they don't work and I can't uninstall them. reinstaling firefox does not solve the problem.17:13
drashdaftpunk, there are two config settings you can try to change, extensions.checkCompatibility and extensions.checkUpdateSecurity, put them both to 'false'. Install 'nightly tester tools' if you don't already have it and from the restart on you can activate or de-activate your add-ons17:17
drashif the keys don't exist, put them in as new via about:config17:17

xodiakquestion: I'm having to run Xubuntu (or Xfce I guess) because I'm doing this on a really old system. What is the lightest, less of a resource hog web browser?17:28
PsynoKhi0Dillo is very lightweight, though lacks a quite a few functions17:30
PsynoKhi0you could go for w3m too, which is textbased17:30
xodiakI don't know if I want to go that light.17:31
xodiakI'll give Dillo a try to check it out though.17:32
PsynoKhi0well, what are the specs or your old comp?17:32
PsynoKhi0or = of17:32
xodiak450Mhz / 640 mb ram / 64 mb video17:33
PsynoKhi0oh boy17:33
PsynoKhi0640 or 64 MB RAM?17:33
PsynoKhi0Opera would run nice on that I'd say17:34
xodiak64017:34
xodiakYeah, opera has been better than Seamonkey and Firefox so far.17:34
PsynoKhi0if we stick to programs available from the official repo at least17:34
PsynoKhi0I've tried  Kazehakase though found it a bit rough still17:35
xodiakI'm really liking opera. But if I get too many tabs open, the system slows down a bit17:36
PsynoKhi0Konq-E didn't impress me... NetSurf might be an option17:37
xodiakdownloading netsurf now17:38
xodiakthanks people.17:40
godlygeekis it just me, or should openoffice.org depend upon, or at least recommend, a dictionary?17:45
godlygeeki consider myself a pretty fluent linux user, and needed google to help me figure out that i needed to install myspell-dictionary-en to get spellchecking working..17:46
godlygeekand i think it only affects those of us who are xubuntu users, since ubuntu users have OOo preinstalled with dictionaries17:47
Stroganoffwhat's the matter?18:04
godlygeekhm?  was that addressed to me?18:10
godlygeek(i don't know if people were talking before i joined... :) )18:11
godlygeekmy complaint is just that installing openoffice.org-writer, and every package that it depends on or recommends, spell checking flat out doesn't work...18:14
godlygeekit's a packaging gripe with OOo, i guess, but since it's a problem that only users for whom OOo and its dictionaries weren't automatically installed will bump into...18:15
godlygeekwhich, afaik, means only xubuntu users and ubuntu server edition users...18:16
Stroganoffgodlygeek try installing language-support-xx18:24
godlygeekfair enough, that clearly would have done the trick...18:25
godlygeekbut, how would i have known to do that?18:25
godlygeeki'm not so much worried about me, so much as the people i'm trying to convince that ubuntu makes linux usable for the (only slightly above) average end-user...18:26
PsynoKhi0godlygeek: was it an alternate cd install?18:27
godlygeekno, desktop cd - though it was a beta install that i dist-upgraded18:27
godlygeekwhen hardy final came out, i mean18:27
godlygeekwell, if this isn't a problem that other people have, i suppose i'll shut up about it.  :)18:36
godlygeekthanks anyway, PsynoKhi0, Stroganoff18:36
PsynoKhi0np heh18:36
Stroganoffwell, myspell and hunspell are "recommended" packages to openoffice, so..19:14
MadsyAny decent articles on how to configure the xfce menu?19:29
TheSheeptry the xfce help19:34
crazycat75vrhallo20:04
holyguyver_How do I set it up so that my home folder is on a shared partition?20:25
birohi all, I'm having major trouble with thunar on a clean install of xubuntu 8.04. It keeps freezing when I show/hide hidden files either from the menu or ctrl+ h21:17
birocan anyone suggest where to start looking for the problem?21:18
ubuntunoviceI just tried to play a mp3 using totem... the codec was not installed.. synaptic automatically started and a couple of codecs which can be installed appeared.. I clicked twice and the codecs were installed! THIS IS GREAT STUFF!!! Finally linux has become userfriendly.. what I was wondering is how does synatpic know it has to start up? does Totem give a signal to synaptic? or how does it work...?!21:19
TheSheepubuntunovice: yes, totem has a plugin for that21:21
ubuntunovicecool21:21
ubuntunovicethis is hot stuff... the end of windows I believe...21:22
ubuntunovicecomputers could be hundreds of euros cheaper if the big manufacturers would turn to ubuntu!21:22
TheSheepnah, Windows ended in 200221:22
ubuntunovicethat would be a big sales argument!21:22
TheSheepit just takes a lot of time to die off for such a giant21:22
ubuntunovicewell..... still 99% of home pcs have windows on it21:22
ubuntunovicebut really... was it that difficult? Why couldn't Redhat do something like ubuntu does now? I bought redhat 7 and it was crap!!21:23
TheSheepubuntunovice: MS has still a lot to say, consider http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/145059/no_change_in_xp_plan_despite_ballmer_comment_microsoft_says.html21:23
ubuntunoviceit just didn't work..21:23
TheSheepsorry, wrong article21:23
TheSheepubuntunovice: this one http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/145719/microsoft_to_limit_capabilities_of_cheap_laptops.html21:24
TheSheepubuntunovice: they are ready to start *paying* vendros to include Windows21:24
TheSheepvendors*21:25
ubuntunovicecan hardly believe that.. how would they make money then?21:25
TheSheepubuntunovice: selling windows-only apps, like ms office21:26
TheSheepubuntunovice: they already record only loses from selling windows, they get money from office and xbox21:27
ubuntunovicehow do you know that?21:27
TheSheepubuntunovice: just read news, there was a yearly summary published by then in January21:27
TheSheepby them21:28
TheSheepof course, those loses might be fake, to save on taxes21:28
nikolamdoes going to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1, F2, Fn) works for you? I use 8.04/64bit and it does not21:29
TheSheepnikolam: it works, at least with the Intel driver21:30
TheSheepnikolam: 64bit here too21:30
nikolamI use prop. laest fglrx (ati/amd)21:31
nikolamalso, since 6.10 Ctrl+Alt+Fn does not work on liogin screen21:32
nikolami suppose it it due to fglrx21:32
trollboyHowdy, I'm running hardy and for some reason my desktop went away22:52
trollboythe base color is still there, but I can't right click and all my icons are gone22:52
trollboywhat's more xchat says I can't load a transparent bg22:52
trollboyanyone encounter this before?22:52
drashhi trollboy .. might be that your desktop got lost, try "xfdesktop" from a console22:55
trollboysudo first?22:58
godlygeekno.22:58
trollboyok.. well...22:59
trollboyis doing something22:59
trollboyno output, but hasn't returned the prompt yet either22:59
godlygeekit won't.  did it give you your desktop back?22:59
trollboyyes22:59
trollboyyes it did22:59
drashcan you right click and get the menu ?23:00
trollboyyes23:00
drashyou need to re-activate some stuff i think23:00
trollboyhow would I go about doing that?23:00
drashsettings > desktop23:00
trollboyok?23:00
trollboyAllow Xfce to manage the desktop is checked23:00
drashsettngs > settings manager actually, in there look for desktop23:01
godlygeekthen, in the terminal, you can press CTRL-z  then  "bg<enter>"  then  "disown<enter>"  and you should be back at a prompt, and "jobs" shouldn't report anything.23:01
drashthat shloud do it23:01
trollboythanks23:02
trollboyanyway to prevent this in the future?23:02
godlygeekif you can figure out a way to prevent program crashes, you'll make a lot of money...  :)23:03
trollboylol23:03
godlygeekxfdesktop crashed, which meant it was removed from the session...23:03
trollboyits what I do all day long23:03
trollboyright, but I rebooted and it still was gone23:04
godlygeekall you could do is add it back into the session (what you just did)23:04
godlygeekor delete the session and start a new one23:04
godlygeeksure, but sessions get saved between reboots.  ever left a file browser open when you shut down, and noticed it pop back up when you logged back in?23:04
godlygeekit's the "Save session for future logins" thing on the exit menu.23:05
godlygeeki believe, though i'm not certain, that if you had ever unchecked that when logging out, things would have been fixed when you logged back in.23:07
trollboynice23:09
trollboythanks23:09
n-iCewhat's the best xubuntu version?23:44
godlygeekn-iCe: they're all good.  those of us in here prefer xubuntu, obviously.  :)23:50
n-iCebut 7.10 is better than 8.04 ?23:50
godlygeekoh, wait, the best *xubuntu* version?  what do you mean?  Hardy vs Gutsy vs Feisty?23:50
n-iCeCuz I tried to install 8.04 and all crashed23:50
n-iCecouldn't make it work23:50
n-iCeyeah23:50
godlygeek8.04 is the newest and the one that will be officially supported for the longest as of right now.23:51
godlygeekwhat crashed for you?  the installer, or the desktop after the install?23:52
n-iCeALL23:52
n-iCeJust didn't start up23:52
godlygeekthe installer didn't start up at all?  that's odd.23:52
godlygeekwhat type of machine are you running on?23:52
n-iCeThe pc after update rebooting23:52
godlygeekafter installing for the first time from a CD?23:53
n-iCefrom updates manager23:53
n-iCeI have the 6.06 cd23:53
n-iCethen upgraded to 6.10 > 7.04 then 7.1023:53

godlygeekso, nothing at all comes up when you try to boot now?23:54
godlygeekor, have you reinstalled 6.06?23:55
n-iCereinstalled23:55
godlygeekah.  well.  not much anyone can do to help you, then.  :)23:56
godlygeek8.04 works fine for most people, though...23:57
godlygeekif you try to upgrade again and it fails again, see if the people either here or in #ubuntu can help you fix it rather than reinstalling.23:57
