Iskrwhy is updatedb running even if i put the update manager options stating that i don't want it to check for updates?09:42
Iskrperiodically when i boot it runs someway slowing me down very much09:42
TheSheepIskr: updatedb has nothing to do with update manager09:45
Iskrah09:46
TheSheepIskr: it updates the filename database for use with the 'locate' command09:46
Iskrok09:46
Iskrso it wasn't it09:46
Iskri was wrong in locating the app name09:46
Iskrbut it was the update manager running09:46
Iskri know it because its icon from orange was grey09:47
Iskrlike it is when there is some package manager running09:47
TheSheepno idea09:47
Iskr=(09:48
TheSheepnext time you have it you can check if it does any network connections, with 'netstat'09:48
Iskranyway i'd really like to remove that orange icon from my system tray... i'd like to start the update manager when I want to update09:48

Iskri have already done it09:50

Iskrbut it didn't work09:50
Iskri swear09:50
Iskreven if i check it now09:50
TheSheepperhaps it was saved with your session09:51
Iskrthe application is unchecked09:51
Iskrbut nevertheless it started09:51
TheSheepxfce can remember the application that were running when you logged out and start them when you log in09:51
TheSheepif it has the 'save session' checkbox set when you are loggin out09:52
Iskroh yes it's true09:52
Iskrit could be that09:52
Iskrso i must kill it09:52
TheSheepyou can clear your session by deleting the files in ~/.cache/sessions/09:53
Iskri killed it09:53

Iskrthank you very much as usual TheSheep you are always very useful09:53
TheSheepcool09:54
Iskrdo you also know how i can make my pdf icon back after being changed by acroreader?09:55
TheSheepIskr: I have no idea what acrobat does with the icon09:57
TheSheepIskr: I suppose you could replace the icon it installed09:57
Iskryes but how?09:57
TheSheepIskr: or just remove it, then it will fallback to the default09:57
Iskryes but i need it09:58
TheSheepwell, first you need to find it...09:58
TheSheepthe icon file, not whole acrobat09:58
Iskrah yes09:58
Iskri tried to remove it09:58
TheSheepdpkg -L packagename will list the files contained in a package09:58
Iskrlet me found the howto i had tried09:59
lsolesenI am trying to install xubuntu on a lenovo t60, and everything worked but the wireless. I have googled a bit, and it seems I need to install http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads10:02

lsolesenBut how do I do that?10:02
Iskrit didn't work10:02
TheSheeplsolesen: I'm sure there are howtos on the think wiki10:03
TheSheepIskr: you have acrobat in that directory?10:04
TheSheepIskr: or is it a different version?10:04
Iskryes of course it's same directory and same verions -.-10:05
TheSheepit should work by my book, any error messages?10:06
Iskrno -.-10:06
Iskrthe 'save session' feature has nothing to do with this thing, isn't it?10:07
lsolesenTheSheep: you are probably right, but could not find it :) Hoped some clever guy here knew a link. I only have a wireless signal where I am installing, so I have to switch to win every time I want to look something up. A little annoying :)10:08

aanderseyou can still use xorg if you want though17:15
aanderseyeah on my other pc i had to manually set xorg.conf because it couldn't detect it for me17:15

aandersehmm yeah... i know xorg.conf settings... but xorg is changing so much and i think they are getting away from modifying that file17:16
Boxxxerwhen i used Ubuntu, there was an application in which you could set the default monitor and the driver of the graphics card...17:16

sunkimive got the same problem as nikolam and cody-somerville but the dpkg-commando didnt work.. it says something like (dpkg:conflicting measures e (--control) and r (--remove)20:55
* burner gets excited about the memory reduction and fuse-inclusion for 8.10 :) It'll make me use XFCE on my eee again20:56
burnercody-somerville: you're a suit! ;)20:56
cody-somervilleburner, I _am_ a suit? :P20:56
burnerlookin all corporate in your youtube interview with suit and tie20:57
cody-somervillelol20:57
burnerit was cool though...  good work man20:57
burnerone question... i didn't hear anything about xubuntu + usb stick booting... any plans?20:59
burneri haven't tried fedora's creator since it's windows based, but the eeexubuntu dude made a sweet .sh file that would be nothing to include and make a desktop icon for20:59
cody-somervillethere are plans to be able to install it to usb via the desktop installer20:59
burnerbut does that "install" it to usb or does it make your usb a "live-cd" ?21:00
burneri prefer the latter so I can then install xubuntu on eee pcs and other notebooks with no cd rom21:00
* cody-somerville is not sure.21:00
Boxxxerhello21:00
cody-somervilleburner, I can find out for you.21:01
Boxxxeraanderse, you here buddy?21:01
aandersewhats up?21:01
burnerI'm very curious21:01
* cody-somerville nods.21:01
nikolamI found out that dpkg-reconfigure kills most of previous settings in xorg.conf.21:01
* burner goes back to replacing gnome with xfce on his eee... cheers21:02
cody-somerville:)21:02
* cody-somerville goes to get ready for dinner. *waveS*21:02

WaxyFreshWould i gain any speed from removing xfceś menu bar and replacing it with kooldock? im on a verrry slow box and want to conserve ram as much as possible21:27
WaxyFreshNo ideas? input?^21:38
WaxyFreshWhat can i disable/remove from xubuntu to speed it up some?21:44
WaxyFreshSo from my reading it seems like running kde apps on an xfce sytem will slow it down, does this apply to gnome apps also? sorry im confused here22:01
ddroI'm a total newbie, but I'm guessing that since gnome is slower than xfce, gnome apps will be slower too. Just a guess though22:03
WaxyFreshI think it has something to do with kde librarys running slowing on a non-kde desktop enviroment. but im not sure22:06
ddrookay, xbuntu is almost done installing for the third time on my c600 laptop, so I might as well ask now. Is there an updated guide on getting a linksys wpc54g v3 card to work in xbuntu 7.10 that anyone can point me to? I've tried to follow a couple, and so far I haven't gotten any of them to work. I'm also doing this with no access to internet, as the ethernet card on the top isn't working.22:08
floating_why did you choose 7.10 over 8.0422:10
floating_have you searched ubuntu forums or google for installing cards22:10
floating_those22:11
ddroI tried 8.04 graphical install, and couldn't get it to install. Since I had the text based install cd for 7.10, I figured I'd just use it. I've been throught about two different guides off the forum, and have tried to pull useful info from a few others that were based on different distros or that required an internet connection, but no luck22:13
ddroIf no one knows of an updated guide, that's cool. I'll try the install again with the most updated guide I know of and ask specific questions here as I go. I just thought I'd see if anyone knew of a specific guide.22:17
Odd-rationaleddro: what is giving you trouble?22:17
ddrowell, the last few times I've tried, a few things. When i get to the part when I try to blacklist the default driver, I get a message that the blacklist file doesn't exist. I remember having problems getting ndiswrapper or some of it's other packages to install one time, but I'm not quite sure what went wrong. And then there's trying to get the driver to load. the closest I've gotten to a working card is to have ndiswrapper say I have the 22:24
WaxyFreshis ther a way to see if im running any kde native apps?22:35

WaxyFreshWhy hasent anyone been able to answer any of my quesitons? ive been waiting like 2 hours..23:24
WaxyFreshSorry for my impatiance my time is kinda limited so i dont get much time to research things like this23:25
holohi23:25
holoI just made a fresh install of xubuntu23:25
holoand the microphone apears to be dead23:26
WaxyFreshhavew you turned it on in the volume control app?23:26
kappaccinothis channel is like an ant compared to #ubuntu23:26
holoWaxyFresh, which one?23:26
kappaccino._.23:26
holoWaxyFresh, are you talking about settings -> mixer settings?23:28
holoyes, everything is set there23:28
homeuserhello people.23:29
homeuserMy screen is using a resolution that is good but it flickers quite a bit. When focusing on one area, out of peripheral vision all other areas flicker quite a bit....23:29
homeuserso is that the refresh rate that needs to be adjusted?23:30
kappaccinodid you try adjusting the refresh rate?23:30
homeuserkappaccino: no. Under Display Preferences, it shows resolution set to Default.23:30
homeuserkappaccino: If I change it to any others, it is smooth but he resolution is not the same as the current one.... Always a little smaller....23:31
homeuserkappaccino: but if yo have any suggestions I'd give it a shot.23:32
kappaccinois there no option for you to change it? (is it an LCD?)23:32
homeuserkappaccino: there's many givesn options under Default ... such as 1280x900 @60, 1280x900 @75. But none of them is the same resolution as the current one which is really good and the highest I've seen on the system. :)23:33
kappaccinoso this is a CRT monitor or LCD?23:34
homeuserkappaccino: CRT.23:34
kappaccinoah23:34
kappaccinothe flickering is probably the fault of low refresh rates23:35
WaxyFreshholo: yes thats what i was speaking of,besides that i cant help you. there might be opther settings in there you can try but im not sure what.23:35
homeuserkappaccino: right. So I was curious how to determine the current resolution. Then maybe I can find that one int eh list and with a higher refresh rate.23:36
kappaccinowhat size is the monitor?23:36
holoWaxyFresh, this is really strange... i can't complain about the sound quality for example, its clean as was never before23:37
homeuserkappaccino: it is a samsung synmaster 750 19".23:37
holoi'm hearing gladiator soundtrack with such a pleasure :)23:37
homeuserkappaccino: trying to look up it's supported refresh rates. :) Don't wanna set it to 70 or 85 if it can't support it. :)23:37
kappaccinohomeuser: 1280x1024 would be an optimal resolution for a 19" crt monitor23:39
homeuserkappaccino: wait. This is a 17".23:39
kappaccinooh23:39
homeuserkappaccino: it has been such a logn time using this that I even forgot this monitor was only 17". :)23:39
homeuserso maybe 1024x768?23:39
kappaccinoyeah try that, I also have a 17" at work and that's what I use23:40
kappaccinoI have the refresh rate set at 75Hz23:41
homeuserkappaccino: I gnome, it doesn't flicker. Or I never noticed it. In xfce it flicker to the point of giving me a headache. So if I change it here, is it going to be for all X sessions?23:41
homeuserIn other words, I like my gnome settings and I'd rather not mess with those.23:41
kappaccinoI have no idea23:42
homeuserkappaccino: well then, there's only one way to find out. :)23:42
homeuseryeah after setting it to even 1152x864 @ 75, it is quit a lower resolution that the "Default"23:44
homeuserok, the Default is using 1280x960@60.23:45
homeuserI wonder if it can be changed somethign in X settings without smoking the monitor.23:45
holois it safe to install pulseaudio in hardy without disrupting all my audio settings?23:46
homeuserah, max recommended is 1280x1024 @ 66.23:46
homeuserholo: what is pulseaudio?23:47
holohomeuser, it's the replacement of esound23:47
holoits a midleware between aplications and the sound drivers23:48
holoit can redirect sound stream to whatever one wants, mix sounds, etc23:48
homeuseroh something like ladspa and jack and all those?23:48
homeuseroh like JACK?23:48
holowell, don't know many of the others23:48
holobut i'm out of clues now in what to do to put my microphone working23:49
holosuposelly pulseaudio is installed by default in hardy23:50
holobut i don't see its tools here23:50
holook, pulseaudio sounds like the next big thing, so i'll just install everything from it23:51
homeuseryeah I'm still googling to see what it is... :)23:52
homeuserholo: so I don't really have the knowledge to respond to your question. but I maybe learning something new todya. :)23:52
homeuser*today.23:52
holohehe23:52
holonice then23:52
homeusersorry. :)23:53
holono problem, there are 60 people here.. I hope there isn't anyone else here that is sorry not to be able to help me23:54
holoit would be a sorry chaos23:54
homeuserhehe.23:54

homeuserkappaccino: thanks for your help. I'm gonna leave it as is. :)23:59
