lc2darkcrab: stupid questions, but 1) did you replace all references to transmission 2) did you restart firefox00:00
darkcrabhmmm00:00
darkcrabone sec00:00
node_6ShiroUsagi:  all up00:04
darkcrabyea lc2, its all set, but its not working00:08
lc2well, what the crap00:08
ArthurArchnixdarkcrab: Are you still working on your transmission thing?00:15
darkcrabyea00:15
darkcrabno luck00:15
ArthurArchnixYeah... I told you. It's buggy software right now. Try creating a new profile. Alt+F2 then firefox -P create new. Get it working. then go into old profile and copy over your bookmarks.00:16
darkcrabkk00:17
ShiroUsaginode_6, The sound system in Hardy was changed to Pulseaudio, might also be helpful to look in that direction, try using one of those: http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/AboutPulseAudio#RelatedSoftware00:19
KuroUsagiOh, It hangs at last...00:31
KuroUsagiI don`t see any pattern in these occurances.00:33
lc2KuroUsagi: :\00:36
cody-somerville:]00:37
KuroUsagiIt looks like a problem with xfwm, but everything refreshes, and the panel is unresponsive too... Really puzzled here.00:38
lc2KuroUsagi: me too00:40
lc2did you get this problem with whatever you were using before?00:40
KuroUsagiNope. I believe it started after upgrading to Hardy. And as for Xfce, I was rarely using it, mostly sticking with Gnome.00:42
lc2does gnome do that as well?00:42
KuroUsagiNo, it has its own problems :)00:42
lc2i haven't a clue :\00:47
KuroUsagiThe strange thing is: it reacts to ctrl+alt+f1-etc, and c+a+backspace, caps- num- scroll- locks, but none of the other keystrokes.00:53
lc2hm :(00:54
KuroUsagiSomething is receiving them and deliberately ignoring...00:54
KuroUsagiErm... Does it suppose to have 62 console-kit-daemon processes running?..01:04
KuroUsagiOh, it`s a registered bug...01:06
lc2haha wtf01:07

ubottuLaunchpad bug 148454 in consolekit "console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads" [Undecided,Confirmed]01:07
KuroUsagiJust a confusion, or whatever.01:10
tazaAnyone got a complete newbie faq for getting new themes?01:10
cody-somervilleYou just download the theme and extra it to .themes/ in your home directory.01:11
tazaExactly. Complete newbie style?01:11
tazaI mean, to begin with, what style of themes affect what?01:12
tazaI'm pretty sure I can do all this myself if I just had a document explaining all the terms and causes in detail.01:12
KuroUsagiAn example theme-creation-kit?01:13
cody-somervilletaza, and now you're confusing me and I'm a developer :P01:13
tazaNo, I just want a newbie's introduction to what themes are, what themes are what and how do they all interlock.01:13
tazaWhat are GTK themes for and what are Xfce themes for, to begin with01:14
KuroUsagihttp://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/01:14
KuroUsagiLike.. this?01:14
tazaMost certainly not.01:15
cody-somervilleThere is no such thing as an "Xfce theme"01:15
cody-somervilleAn "Xfce theme" is a GTK theme.01:15
tazaKuroUsagi: I understand *nothing* from that site. I mean, I could use my graphical skills and my programming skills to create something there but I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it.01:16
tazaI wasn't asking for a "complete newbie" guide for nothing01:17
tazaFor I have no understanding of the terminology and how they actually work.01:17
lc2well you know what GTK is01:18
lc2everything's simple english from there01:18
tazaYeah, right.01:18
KuroUsagiBasicalli it`s just pictures of buttons and decorations all stacked together, with some text describing what goes where... Or.. is it not?01:19
tazaNo, it's not01:20
KuroUsagi*lly01:20
tazaAnd lc2, that must be obviously some new usage of of the word 'simple' I was previously unaware of.01:20
tazaTo begin with, I do not know the components and what component affects what.01:20
tazaI know GTK+ is a widget library for GUIs, and uh, I have no idea how it's used in Xfce401:21
cody-somervilleDo you know what a widget is, taza?01:21
lc2taza: all xfce's menus, taskbars, etc are drawn using GTK01:21
tazalc2: Thanks, now we're getting to where we want to be.01:21
KuroUsagiWhy don`t you take a ready made theme, and start by altering it. Then you can notice the changes with your own eyes.01:22
lc2in the case of window decorations (titlebars etc), it inherits some properties from the GTK theme, and others from the xfce decoration theme01:22
tazaI presume the theme howto applies only to the window decoration theme?01:22
lc2taza: yes01:22
tazaSo basically if I want to change colours and such I'm looking for a GTK theme.01:22
lc2taza: depends on what you want to change the colours of01:22
tazaAnd if I want to change titlebars and window borders I want a xfce window decoration theme01:22
lc2pretty much01:23
cody-somervilleXfce theme === GTK theme.01:23
tazaYeah, that was the part I was in the dark of.01:23
tazaNo.01:23
lc2no01:23
tazaWhat's called a xfce theme is a xfce window decoration theme.01:23
tazaIt all makes sense once I got that one critical part down.01:24
KuroUsagiWell, people sometimes refer to copiers as xerox...01:24
lc2taza: bear in mind that with some window decoration themes, colours and so on are inherited from the GTK theme01:24
tazalc2: Yeah, but I'm not looking for an another window decoration theme01:25
tazaMy problem is that xfce4-dusk is too dark for my screen in some conditions01:25
lc2sec01:27
KuroUsagiI give up... Back to Gnome for the time being... Although I really like the concept behind Xfce.01:30
lc2;\01:30
tazaBack to gnome from xfce?01:31
tazaWhy on earth would you do something like that?01:31
KuroUsagiYeah.01:31
tazaI'm using xfce just because I don't have space for the better stuff01:32
lc2i'm trying to find the global gtk themes directory and i have no clue01:32
tazaAnd I don't mean KDE even if I do think it's better than Gnome. I mean wmii etc.01:32
tazaSplit workspaces. <3 <3 <301:33
lc2oh01:33
lc2/usr/share/themes/01:33
KuroUsagiBecause Xfce stops responding to my keyboard and mouse after some usage time...01:33
lc2poke around in there to find Dusk01:33
tazaWell I can just extract it to .themes too01:33
lc2taza: you may find it easier to tweak your existing theme, if you find it too dark, than to do another01:33
KuroUsagiAnd, personally, I find KDE inferior to both Xfce and Gnome, but that`s just me.01:34
tazaKuroUsagi: Ever tried a split workspace window manager?01:34
tazaI mean, it's a function I think all of them should have01:34
KuroUsagiNever really had to split.01:34
tazaBut alas, I have 800x480 resolution, so no split workspaces for me. ;_;01:34
lc2taza: /usr/share/themes/Xfce-dusk/gtk-2.0/gtkrc01:35
KuroUsagiBut doesn`t Gnome provide one?01:35
tazaNot sure.01:35
lc2taza: 800x600? why?01:35
tazaXfce doesn't, I'm pretty sure.01:35
tazalc2: Not 800x600. 800x480.01:35
lc2wtf01:35
lc2!01:35
KuroUsagieeePC or something01:36
tazaYup, EeePC01:36
lc2cool01:36
tazaI mean, I'd still so love split workspaces.01:36
tazaBut Xfce is just so much more practical for a screen of this size01:36
TheSheepJef Raskin claimed this screen size is optimal for working with text01:37
TheSheephis Cat had such a tiny screen too01:38
thinkmassiveick that's why I haven't taken the eeepc dive yet01:40
thinkmassive480 is usable on something the size of a phone01:40
tazaIt's usable for everything but gaming and image editing01:41
thinkmassivenot to rip on your eee, I still want one01:41
thinkmassivehow many lines is that in a shell?01:41
tazaMabbe 2001:42
thinkmassiveI would use the term tolerable, as opposed to usable01:42
tazaIt's usable01:42
thinkmassivethe TRS-80 was usable too01:42
tazaAye01:42
thinkmassiveI suppose for the price it's alright01:43
tazaBut you can game with the Eee too01:43
ShiroUsagiI still don`t get the need of split workspaces on EeePC.01:43
tazaNWN1 works just fine01:43
thinkmassivehehe cool01:43
tazaI want a split-in-the-half for coding01:43
tazaMy coding uses a lot of magic numbers and formulas.01:43
ShiroUsagiOpen two windows and align them nicely :)01:43
werswhat's the difference between lower window and hide window?01:43

Myrttiall the other apps work fine?12:00
slaine_It only happens with terminal (but it's sub windows like Help/About etc. have the same issue)12:00
slaine_Yes, all other apps I've tried so far work fine12:00
Myrttiso it's a bug between xfce4-terminal and xfwm, if I understand correctly12:00
Myrttiis this normal xubuntu, not eeexubuntu or ppc?12:01

gnomefreakthis works fine in gnome with xterm12:03
slaine_I'm not using gnome12:03
slaine_and it happens regardless of theme12:03
gnomefreaksorry it was xfterm4 that crashed here12:04
gnomefreakbut i expect that12:04
gnomefreakthe reason i ask about theme is because the gnome default theme doesnt show this issue here so maybe its the default theme on xfce that is causing this12:05
slaine_It was just suggested to disable composite explicitly in xorg.conf by the xfce guys. I'll give that a go later12:05
gnomefreaki am unable to change to xfce at this time12:05
slaine_I've changed the bit depth to 16 too and still the same problem12:05
gnomefreakslaine_: that could be the issue since its using compiz not default WM12:06
slaine_I'm not using compiz12:06
Myrtticomposite in xubuntu is done with compiz?12:06
gnomefreakMyrtti: i thought it was12:07
MyrttiI've got no idea12:07
gnomefreakonly kde4 doesnt use it afaik they have their own in kde412:07
slaine_Yeah, the compositor is disabled via the Window Manager Tweaks app12:08
gnomefreakxubuntu doesnt have it enabled by default?12:08
Myrttinot that I know of12:08
gnomefreakonce the right drivers are found ofcourse12:08
* gnomefreak doesnt touch compiz other than to run tests on new software and bugs12:09
slaine_Yes, and I don't have a driver that's capable12:17
slaine_But it looks like Terminal application is expecting it to be there12:18
slaine_This is a right pain, as I use terminals a lot12:18
slaine_Ok, disabling composite explicitly via the xorg.conf file solved the problem12:29

TheSheepbut xfce-panel is not enough15:25
age6racerany ideas?15:25
AlexCONRADTheSheep: what else would I need (it installed all kinds of dependencies)15:26
StroganoffAlexCONRAD you need xfce-session15:30
Stroganoffand you need a window manager15:30
AlexCONRADStroganoff: ok, i'll install that15:30
TheSheepthe 'xfce4' metapackage should contain all you need, and some more15:31
AlexCONRADStroganoff: i installed thunar already.15:31
TheSheepxfdesktop may be handy15:32
StroganoffAlexCONRAD thunar is a file browser15:32
Stroganoffwindow manager examples: xfwm4 (used by xfce), openbox, fluxbox, icewm15:32
Stroganofficewm brings it's own panel though15:32
AlexCONRADStroganoff: I see. I guess that makes the pretty icons, right ?15:32
Stroganoffa window manager manages windows. move, resize, maximize, minimize...15:33
AlexCONRADheh, I broke something I guess, I seem to be running xfce, but I have an empty screen with the menu that contains nothing (icon of some kind of sun), and i can only right click to see its properties and customize panel15:38
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: you need to install panel plugins15:38
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: by itself panel contains nothing15:38
AlexCONRADok :)15:39

AlexCONRADalt+F2 doesn't do anything15:40
AlexCONRADheh, I guess I'll just reinstall the box in minimal, and restart from there15:40
AlexCONRADI'm installing a xubuntu minimal box, and want to add xfce on top, without the whole things I don't need, games, and others. I only want a browser (meant for kiosk mode)15:41
AlexCONRADand I have a few boxes to setup, so I did some preseeding to automate the install: tasksel tasksel/first   multiselect     minimal, openssh-server15:42
AlexCONRADok, I'm back on a clean box with minimal install15:50
TheSheepat the minimum, you need xfce4-session and xfwm415:53
AlexCONRADso basicly: sudo apt-get install gdm xfce4-terminal xfce-session xfwm4 thunar firefox15:53
AlexCONRADcould get me going15:53
TheSheepyou don't really need thunar15:54
AlexCONRADalrigh15:54

TheSheepxfce has some kiosk options for locking it up15:54
TheSheepfirefox has some too15:54

thinkmassiveI edited /etc/hosts but the domain name I entered is still resolving to the old (real) address, how do I dump the dns cache?20:28
zoredachethinkmassive: how are you testing that the name resolves?20:33
thinkmassiveheh nevermind, I didn't realize host actually asked the DNS server20:34
thinkmassiveI was confused why ping was aimed at the correct IP but host was not20:34
zoredachethat was gonna tell ya.20:34
thinkmassiveload testing is fun20:37
socrI do not think iptables is started in eeexubuntu, is it ?20:58
thinkmassiveI don't think it's started in any xubuntu by default20:59
Myrttierrr.21:01
Myrttiso they've taken it from the kernel?21:01
thinkmassivehuh?21:02
Myrttiiptables is built in the kernel I believe. you have it prolly in all of the linuxes, it just doesn't have any rules added to it, allowing all traffic21:03
Myrttiand if my babbling is confusing, please ignore21:05
thinkmassiveI think that's correct21:07
thinkmassiveon my centos boxes doing "service iptables stop" just turns off all the rules21:07
Myrttiso basically, if talking about standard *buntu*, you do have iptables on and started21:08
Myrttibut as said, it doesn't have any rules added per default.21:08
thinkmassiveoh I see, socr might be asking if it's not even included in eeexubuntu21:08
thinkmassivethat i do not know21:09
socrI think it is there, but indeed: no rules, allowing all.... weird...21:11
zoredachehow is that weird?21:11
socran open system by default ???21:11
socrrfeally...21:11
socrreally...21:11
zoredacheit is the same for any ubuntu.  But on the other hand there is no servers running by default so there is nothing to attack21:12
socrok, true...  I found firestarter, it makes iptables rules.21:14
socrin /etc/firestarter21:14
AlexCONRADhi, I just installed network-manager-gnome (which installed a bunch of deps), but I don't see anything in my menu21:21
AlexCONRADI was expecting to have some "system" menu21:22
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: it normally adds itself to autostarted applications21:22
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: and sits in you systray21:22
TheSheepupir21:22
TheSheepyour21:22
AlexCONRADisn't that the graphical tool to let you control your network settings ?21:23
Myrttiif not, press alt-f2 and call for "nm-applet"21:23
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: no, that's network-admin21:23
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: part of gnome-system-tools21:24
AlexCONRADand I don't find the xfce4 task manager in the CD. Is that normal?21:24
TheSheepyes, xubuntu uses the gnome system monitor instead, as it didn't add deps and is much more feature-rich21:25

AlexCONRADmy question might be odd and is not xubuntu specific related, but what's the diff between vmlinuz and initrd ?21:43
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: one contains the compressed kernel, the other contains initial root directory and initialization scripts21:44
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: they are then replaced with root mounted from the disk21:44
AlexCONRADok, I understood that if you uncompress - or look inside - initrd, you'll see something close to your system's structure, right ?21:45
AlexCONRADthen replaced ?21:45
TheSheepit's uncompressed into memory and used as the temporary root until your real root is mounted in its place21:46
slow-motionhi21:46
TheSheepgood evening slow-motion21:47
AlexCONRADTheSheep: I see.21:47
AlexCONRADhi slow-motion21:47
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: it also contains scripts that detect hardware and mount that root and such21:47
slow-motionhi TheSheep, AlexCONRAD21:47
AlexCONRADTheSheep: so there are two copies of these files ?21:48
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: what do you mean?21:51
AlexCONRADso both are binary, and the version from the xubuntu CD is simply copied to your /boot folder during install. I'm asking these questions because the loaded network module (r8169 by default) is not the right one and it should be r8168 which is not provided with the distro. Drivers from Realtek and a patch for ubuntu (from the community) is available and I'd like to include this modification on the xubuntu CD i'm remastering for kiosk. But as it's21:52
AlexCONRAD a module (not compiled in the kernel, thus not in vmlinuz), that module would live under initrd. So I'd need to rebluild the initrd.gz file and replace the one from the original ubuntu version.21:52
TheSheepno, modules are loaded much later21:53
AlexCONRADTheSheep: you say that they are replaced when the disk is mounted. Meaning that there's a "boot" version, which is then replaced from the "disk" version21:53
TheSheepthey live in /lib/modules21:54
TheSheepinitrd only needs the modules for hard disks and raid arrays and such21:54
AlexCONRADTheSheep: i understand21:55
TheSheepnetwork modules are loaded much later, when the disk is already mounted21:55
AlexCONRADbut people who made the patch say to make it persistant, you need to mkinitrdfs21:55
TheSheepthen I don't know21:56
AlexCONRADbut where does the vmlinuz and initrd live if the disk is not yet mounted ?21:56
AlexCONRADwhere are they loaded from21:57
AlexCONRADthanks for these info anyway, its helpful21:57
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: they are loaded by Grub from disk to memory21:58
TheSheepAlexCONRAD: grub remembers where they live on the disk, so it doesn't need all the fancy drivers21:59
