=== MythbuntuGuest07 is now known as pobski
raslacI've found several people with a similar problem as me on various forums and the mythtv-users mailing list -- all are pretty much unresolved, but a handful of people say, "It works for me." It's S/PDIF output on a 690G/SB600 motherboard (the Asus M2A-VM HDMI, specifically). 2-channel digital audio works fine, but not 6-channel from mythtv. From the command line, `mplayer -channels 6 -ac hwdts test.dts` and `mplayer -channels 6 01:09
raslacIn MythTV, the sensible settings seem to be -- audio device: ALSA:default; passthrough device: ALSA:iec956; Max audio channels: 5.1; Enable AC3 and DTS to SPDIF passthrough; Mixer Device: ALSA:default. I get no audio out with those settings. In fact the only audio I've ever managed to get with the passthrough enabled is with Passthrough output device: "Default", and then it's just 2-channel digital noise.01:09
raslacOutput of my aplay -lL is at http://pastebin.com/d631a4d401:09
raslacanyone in a similar boat?01:10
raslacjust realized I have been testing output with a DVD.. just tried a 5.1 ATSC signal, and not even 2-channel output with passthrough unchecked. Noise with passthrough checked.01:19
raslacbut standard def, stereo TV broadcasts still play 2 channels on my receiver01:23
JaredBlandHello, everyone.  I'm setting up a new Mythbuntu machine and everything's progressing smoothly thus far.  I'm considering subscribing to SchedulesDirect but, since I previously used the cost-free Zap2It scheduling information, I was wondering if there were any comparable alternatives.  I don't see any offered demonstration periods for SchedulesDirect and I am wary of purchasing data for a year at X cost without knowing the reliab01:32
foxbuntuJaredBland, everyone in north america is using it01:33
foxbuntu:)01:33
raslacJaredBland: I've not used SD, but those who do highly recommend it, and as I understand it it works just like the old Zap2It01:33
foxbuntuJaredBland, its provided from Zap2It01:33
JaredBlandschedulesdirect = zap2it?01:34
foxbuntuJaredBland, no, the data is just from Zap2IT01:34
foxbuntuSD is a non-profit org that buys the data and resells the licenses to it01:34
JaredBlandWhy is Zap2It no longer providing data freely?01:34
raslacfolks were abusing the free priveleges01:35
foxbuntubasically01:35
raslacat $20 a year, it's almost free still. Very worth it if you have a lot of channels.01:36
JaredBlandHow do they abuse them?  I heard there was an issue with OEMs charging01:36
=== MythbuntuGuest88 is now known as pobski
JaredBlandI've 69 analog channels of which I use maybe 5, sparingly.  One person in the house watches MSNBC for 30 minutes no more than twice a week, and I like The Outer Limits and X Files01:37
pobskifor anyone that was watching irc earlier, i had the problem with the pvr 150 not showing anything but static.01:37
JaredBland$20 isn't much but compared to free with Vista Media Center01:37
pobskiturns out i'm an idiot and messed up my config when installing lol01:37
foxbuntuJaredBland, buy SD and move on...its seriously not worth this much thought, its $2001:37
JaredBlandYeah, you're right01:38
JaredBlandJust was wondering if there were any other options01:38
foxbuntunope01:38
foxbuntuthe data is good and the service is cheap01:38
tgm4883_laptopJaredBland, all the other alternative are crap, violate TOS, and don't work very well01:41
tgm4883_laptopplus they break when the site changes a little bit01:41
JaredBlandalright01:41
raslacif broadcasters in your area send programming information along the digital signal, mythtv can use that to populate the guide, but it's usually not terribly reliable and the mainstream networks tend to only send 4-6 hours worth of data.01:45
raslacyou mentioned analog tuner, though.01:45
JaredBlandYes, standard analog cable01:46
JaredBlandOh, great.  Just finished setting it all up and now I can't get audio out through my SPDIF cable01:48
JaredBlandI tried ALSA:default and ALSA:spdif.01:49
pobskiquick question, if you are watching tv through the mythtv frontend and it needs to record a scheduled program, does the schedule take precedent?01:52
Seeker`pobski: When I am in that situation, it prompts me01:53
Seeker`"record the scheduled program ,and watch it", "record the scheduled program and return to the main menu" (or something like that), or "don't record, I want to watch TV"01:53
Seeker`about 30 seconds before the recording is due to start01:53
pobskiawesome01:54
pobskithis setup seems pretty incredible, i'm glad i found my way to it01:54
pobskiseems to be exactly what i was looking for01:54
pobskionly thing i kind of want different is the music player01:56
pobskiis there any player with an interface similar to winamp?01:57
raslacJaredBland: which audio chipset are you using? I'm having spdif problems, too01:58
raslac*grumble* alc883 *grumble*01:59
JaredBlandIt's a cmedia, let me check the model02:07
JaredBlandMy keyboard just stopped working too02:10
JaredBlandCMI876802:10
raslacah02:16
raslacmaybe there's hope for me if you're having trouble with spdif, too - maybe it's not hardware related02:17
JaredBlandYeah, what hopefully wonderful news.02:26
raslacteehee02:29
JaredBlandArgh, can't play my retail DVDs either.02:44
raslacI had to reboot when after I installed the proprietary codecs when I set up my mythbuntu box02:53
MythbuntuGuest71HI06:01
MythbuntuGuest71Any one online?06:01
johnnystrI have two major, but I'm sure basic, issues. TV-out is not working out of the WinTV PVR-350 on Mythbuntu 8.04 and also I have a cable box, so how do I connect the mythbox to my cable setup properly?06:13
tgm4883_laptopfor the cable box, either via firewire or a PVR-15006:15
johnnystrI'm in new york and the time warner cable box I have, Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100, does not have a firewire jack. and by pvr-150, are you saying the 350 won't work?06:17
johnnystrthe cable box does have a usb slot, but my pvr-350 does not have a firewire or usb slot06:17
tgm4883_laptopyes the PVR-350 will work06:18
johnnystri tried taking the cable box out of the equationg, but I lose half of my channels when I do that(and I have basic cable)06:18
tgm4883_laptopdo you have an HD cable box?06:18
johnnystrno i do not06:18
tgm4883_laptopok06:18
tgm4883_laptopthen just hook the cable box up to the PVR-350 by way of composite (or svideo, or coax)06:19
johnnystrI was able to get basic channels (in new york that is 2,4,5,7,9,11, 13) but any cable channels weren't coming up06:19
johnnystrwhen I do the "cable-out"(the cable that would run to the television) and plug it into the 350 it gets NO signal06:20
johnnystri have the settings setup for us-cable... should i have tried cable-hrc?06:20
johnnystrwhat does HRC stand for? sorry for sounding like such a n00b, this is just a project i've never done before06:21
johnnystrand the 350's composite is only for output06:21
tgm4883_laptopsec06:22
johnnystrthanks06:22
tgm4883_laptopyou could use the svideo in port?06:22
johnnystri wish i could, but cable box has no s-video out06:23
tgm4883_laptopah06:23
tgm4883_laptopok06:23
tgm4883_laptopso for coax06:23
tgm4883_laptopyou will only get one channel and will have to blast to change the channel on the cable box06:23
johnnystrblast?06:23
tgm4883_laptopir blasting06:23
tgm4883_laptopotherwise how will the cable box change channels?06:24
johnnystrthats the other area that i was confused about06:24
johnnystri gotta be able to record one channels, while watching another. the pvr-350 has a remote, the cable box has a remote... i was overwhelmed considering i have only one cable signal06:25
tgm4883_laptoperr06:25
tgm4883_laptopyou won't be able to watch one while recording another06:25
tgm4883_laptopunless06:25
johnnystrbut right now I just want two basic things, to have all my channels up to channel 106, and be able to watch my tv(which is currently disconnected)06:25
tgm4883_laptopyou don't use the cable box06:25
johnnystrahhhh...crap06:26
johnnystrtime warner out here... their signal requires the box, it's all heavily filtered06:26
tgm4883_laptopyou will need a cable box for each concurrent channel being recorded/watched06:26
tgm4883_laptopwell you should get up to like 72?06:26
johnnystri can't get RCN(another company) who just gives you up to channel 99 without a box06:26
johnnystryeah but the frontend could only show the basic channels06:26
johnnystri couldn't watch other channels like MTV(channel 20)06:27
tgm4883_laptopwait06:27
tritiumjohnnystr: depends on where you are.  I too can only get basic channels.06:27
tgm4883_laptophave you hooked the cable up directly to your TV without the cable box?06:27
johnnystryes, oldschol black and white fuzzies(CRT tv)06:27
tgm4883_laptopjohnnystr, are you saying that the mythbox was only getting channels 1-1306:28
johnnystrit had a great signal strength for channels up to 125, but could not display them(only snow)06:28
johnnystrchannels 2-13 could watch just fine06:28
tgm4883_laptophmm06:28
tgm4883_laptopsounds like it was set to broadcast settings and not cable settings06:29
johnnystrand his is directly through the cable-in cable, not through box. with box, i get NO channels06:29
tritiumtgm4883_laptop: not necessarily06:29
johnnystrwell i made sure to select us-cable06:29
johnnystri read somewhere about us-cable-hrc... but I was like, "whats cable-HaRdCore"?06:29
johnnystrj/k i don't know what HRC stands for06:30
tgm4883_laptopharmonically related carriers06:30
tgm4883_laptopi'd try cable hrc since the regular cable one didn't work06:31
johnnystrtrying that now, booting up the myth box06:33
johnnystrwhile i'm waiting on that, any clue as to why the tv-out function does not work?06:33
johnnystri'm sure someone here has that same pvr-350 card and running mythbuntu....hopefully06:34
foxbuntujohnnystr, did you see the wiki on the PVR-350 video out?06:35
johnnystrno i was reading the basic mythbuntu documentation and the manual that came with the card06:35
johnnystri will look that up now if thats what you suggest06:36
johnnystrfoxbuntu: do you have the link, i'm only finding generic hauppauge wiki's06:39
foxbuntujohnnystr, yeah...let me find it06:40
foxbuntujohnnystr, http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Hauppauge_PVR-350#Displaying_X_on_the_PVR-350_video_output06:41
foxbuntuthat should do it06:41
johnnystrhmmm06:43
johnnystrit seems that this solves a resolution issue... but mine doesn't seem to get any signal at all, doyou think this wills till resolve it?06:44
foxbuntujohnnystr, there are several issues that deals with06:50
foxbunturun through it and we can see where that lands you06:51
johnnystrnow if I get the cable box and the mythbox working well together.... which remote do I use to watch tv? the cable box remote or the pvr-350 remote? tgm4883_laptop mentioned IR blasting, what is that?06:54
johnnystrugh, us cable-hrc with cable-in (no cable box) gives me static and snow06:58
johnnystrso i guess uscable is the right choice... just won't work through the cable box06:59
johnnystrwhat is us cable-irc?07:00
tgm4883_laptopincrementally related carriers07:03
johnnystrok. going to try that one now07:04
johnnystrtrying to get past this cable box issue first before i handle the tv out issue07:04
waxheadhi everyone07:39
johnnystrfoxbuntu: i got tv-out working!07:51
johnnystrfoxbuntu: but the area to adjust the size of the overscan is not where the wiki says it is07:52
johnnystrneed to fix it, can't see the channel numbers, they seem to be off screen07:52
waxheada simple question, will I run into problems trying to get things to work on my TV with an ATI card?08:01
waxheadseems to me that nvidia is the only well supported card for these sorts of things...08:01
haffeHi, I'm having a really annoying problem with my mythbuntu 8.04 installation. I have a Hauppage Win-nova t-500 dvb-tcard. The mythbuntu installation doesn't recognize this card. When I chose dvb card V3.x in setup it just fails to probe the card for info. However I can watch tv just fine in vlc fed from the card.08:43
rdaycould someone post the permissions of /var/lib for me?12:42
Sypher|NLHi guys.. I think i screwd up my system. When it boots, it doesn't boot fully. I see a clean black desktop with a mousepointer. To get it to work i have to switch to a different TTY and do "modprobe snd-ca0106" and startx.. then it works.... how can i fix this?12:44

rhpot1991do you have more than one digital audio output on your box?22:26

raslaconly one digital audio.. ok, you said "let your stereo control the volume" Is that a setting somewhere? since you said to enable "Use internal volume control"22:28

Also no audio on 6channel ATSC streams. But 2 channel SD streams work. With passthrough enabled, no audio at all, except for noise if I have devices configured to default.22:43
