ForgeAusNickPresta thats what I'm asking... why would it be useful?00:04

minhaajwhat error do you get running kopete ?00:08
NickPrestaColonel_Panic, what problem are you having?00:08
Colonel_PanicI don't get an error00:08
Colonel_Panicseveral.00:08
minhaajwhats the problem if you dont get error.00:08
minhaajplz explain00:08
Colonel_Panicfirst of all, when I log in, my system tray doesn't fill with icons00:08
NickPrestaColonel_Panic, try to explain it on line or pastebin it so I can read it all00:08
Colonel_Panicinstead, they all appear on the desktop as windows00:09
minhaajright click on task bar and add apps Colonel_Panic00:09
minhaajyou can start from a  clean session and reconfigure the desktop00:09
Colonel_PanicI have a number of apps that are supposed to launch at startup00:10
minhaajdid you put em in start up ?00:11
Colonel_Panicwhen I log in, they don't launch normally, instead they appear as little tiny black windows on the desktop00:11
NickPrestaColonel_Panic, running Compiz?00:11
Colonel_Panicyes00:11
minhaajoh is it adept notifer ?00:11
minhaajdo you get a green bulb like window too ?00:11
Colonel_Panicif I disable it though, I lose all my window decorations00:11
Colonel_Panicand cannot move or resize my windows00:11
NickPrestaColonel_Panic, that sometimes happens with Compiz (It used to happen to Adept Notifier every time) Try to disable Compiz and see if that still happens.00:12
minhaajwrite kwin --replace in konsole00:12
Colonel_PanicAdept Notifier is one of the apps that doesn't start normally, yes00:12
Colonel_PanicI cannot disable Compiz without messing up my whole desktop00:12

NickPrestagenii, I was thinking the same thing00:12
Colonel_Panicthe menu bar glitches out and I lose all my window decorations00:12
Colonel_PanicI've tried that00:13
Colonel_PanicI ended up having to restart X-server and went back to square one00:13
minhaajdid kwin --replace work ?00:14
minhaajit should00:14
Colonel_Panichow can I get rid of Compiz altogether00:14
minhaajsudo apt-get remove compiz00:14
Colonel_Panicand Emerald as well, without messing up my windows?00:14
minhaaj?00:14
Colonel_Panicwithout messing up my windows?00:14

minhaajrofl00:16
Hazalol00:16
minhaajhow goes ?00:17
Colonel_PanicOK well that wasn't so bad, but it appears Compiz is still running00:19
Colonel_Panicweirdly enough00:19
ForgeAusessentially a Gentoo-alt prefix (overlay) would be a Linux subsystem for Linux, I still don't get how that would be useful...00:19
minhaajdoes that fix your desktop ?00:19
ForgeAusits only use that I can see is if you don't have admin access to the pc...00:20
Colonel_Panicsome of the system icons are still missing00:20
Colonel_Paniclike, Kwallet00:20
minhaajyou can add them00:20
minhaajright click on bottom pane and add apps00:20
ForgeAusyou can make a prefix wherever you can access and use a functional gentoo from there...00:20
minhaajand then navigate to app00:20
minhaajor just add applet and select system tray00:20
ForgeAus(it is kinda useful for Interix (SFU/SUA) in windows it works analogously to AndLinux to give it a Gentoo subsytem)00:21

PhoenixGIto have 4 Desktops again right click on the pager and chose Configure Desktops01:46
JuJuBeeCan only set 2 rows...01:46

Colonel_Panicok02:57
Exilantsure02:57
Colonel_PanicI guess repartitioning is ging to be my only option02:57

minhaajthats way better Colonel_Panic02:58
minhaajyou wont have to worry about disk space shortage next time02:58

ExilantColonel_Panic: is there a line with /dev/sda3 in it?03:36
FirefisheFor fun, I just compiled a stock kernel.  Well, like a meathead, I forgot to do a mkinitrd to create an initrd image in /boot, but I find in kubuntu, it's non existent.03:36

ExilantColonel_Panic: you can change that /media/sda3 to basically anything you want03:40
Exilanthowever, there needs to be an empty dir as far as i know of that name03:40
Colonel_Panicwell, what I want to do is, make /dev/hda3 into my /home directory03:40
Exilantwell, the first problem there, you have a subdirectory home on it03:41
Exilantwhat is your user name?03:42

Exilantok, first of all, move it to /media/sda3/jalbert03:47
Exilantor just make an empty dir of that name03:47
Colonel_PanicI'm having a little trouble configuring gparted for install03:47
Exilantyou don't want gparted03:48
Colonel_Panicno?03:53
Exilanti guess not, you don't want to change partitions03:54
Exilantfstab is the file that tells linux where to put the different partitions when it boots up03:54
Colonel_PanicOK so how do I make /dev/sda3 into my /home partition?03:55
Colonel_Panicif I rename that direcrity, it's going to break a bunch of links03:56
Exilantso, first make a new one03:56
Colonel_PanicI mean, I can go through all my apps and change the dependencies03:56
Exilantmkdir /media/sda3/jalbert03:56

eagles0513875Standalf: just create a normal windows partition and with ntfs3g you can get rw access to it09:54

andyho623Does anyone know if it's possible to have like a "stereo mix" setting in Kubuntu??16:35
zorglu_http://tremulous.net16:35
andyho623I'm trying to get it to work with singsnap.com16:35
flaccid_what is a stereo mix setting16:36
flaccid_andyho623, you can change the recording channel in kmix or alsamixer16:37
andyho623flaccid: it gives you the ability to record from a mic and what's playing thru your speakers.. I tried thru kmix but I can only get it to record the mic and not both16:37
frojndflaccid_: does icecast support mtvu or tvants protocol ?16:37
=== christopher is now known as TempoFaux
andyho623flaccid: I'll have to see if alsamixer can do it, with kmix it looks like it'll only let you specify one capture location16:39
=== berickson is now known as foodcoman
flaccid_im not sure what capture is, i thought it was on the other tab but i could be wrong16:41
=== foodcoman is now known as Foodcoman
RiotingPacifistandyho623: if stuff is playing though the k sound system you can use its manager to sort out what gets funneled to the recorder16:43
RiotingPacifisti just need to rember what the damn thing is called for that to make any sense16:43
andyho623rioting: it's not like I'm trying to record TO my pc though.. it's all integrated within the singsnap site.. if that makes sense.. LOL!16:43
flaccid_andyho623, we dont really support random sites here :)16:46
RiotingPacifistsorry my mind has gone completly blank but there is a kde tool that lets you redirect sound about and use stuff like stereo mix settings16:47
RiotingPacifistflaccid_: hes not asking us to support a random site just get his sound system to work with that site16:48
andyho623flaccid: np, was just curious about the whole stereo mix thing since I'll be using it for more than just singsnap, but singsnap was just an easy way to kinda test it16:48
andyho623<--- I've got boobs.. and not man boobs ;)16:48
RiotingPacifistaRts, wikipedia is my friend. andyho623 install aRts and related tools that should let you do what your looking for16:49
andyho623rioting: cool I'll have a look at it thx!16:50
RiotingPacifistthen you just need to get your browser/plugin to use arts and you can pipe whatever sound you want to it16:50
flaccid_RiotingPacifist, sound systems don't work with websites :)16:53
RiotingPacifistsound goes in/out of a browser/plugin, the sound->plugin stuff is definatly part of kubuntu, whatever happens after that isnt our problem but getting the sound to the plugin/browser in the desired format is16:54
flaccid_RiotingPacifist, yes but the problem won't be with the sound system if its working. its the plugin... eg. flash, or whatever it may be16:56
andyho623it's flash...16:57
flaccid_like you demonstrated they do not 'talk' to each other directly16:57
flaccid_andyho623, so your question is more about how do you get flash going or if it is working, how you record its audio?16:57
andyho623flaccid: flash is fine.. when I'm on the site and trying to record, it'll record my mic, but it won't record the music that is playing from the site, though I can hear it16:58
flaccid_andyho623, thats why you need to change the channel in kmix/alsamixer for recording to the stereo mix like in windows or whatever. if you cant then it could be a limitation of your soundcard driver or card but thats unlikely..17:00

ads_ive made no bios changes but when i shutdown my machine reboots. ive tried gui shutdown via kde , "shutdown -h",  "shudown -P"  . i changed my kernel boot options to   "acpi = off" and "pci = noacpi" this only stopped the shutdown from completing. how may i go about fixing this please?18:27
flaccid_ads_, the problem is most likely your bios/computer.18:28
flaccid_unless its not finishing shutdown18:29
ads_flaccid:  hi again.. i havent made any bios changes.. however i did check and made sure that all power settings are pointed to power off or disabled (i.e wake on lan etc)18:29
ads_this started happening on its own without bios changes so i believ its a kernel issue18:29
ads_believe*18:30
flaccid_why would you say that?18:31
ads_well i havent made any changes..   is there anything else it could be other than software??18:32
flaccid_to be honest with you i dont know. but what i do know is that linux sending a reboot signal to ATX instead of power off is highly unlikely18:32
ads_im in my bios now.. power settings > after powr failure = stay off  >>wake up on pci pme = stay off >> wake on lan from s5 = stay off18:35
ads_i do have a scipt running to assist wake on lan i will try removing that to see if it is this!!   (it was working!!)  but i need to rule that out18:35
flaccid_they are not related18:35
flaccid_ok18:36
ads_flaccid__:   what do you mean i dont understand you..  are you saying the settings i quoted are irrelevant to the reboot?18:36
ads_since im here i may check anything else in the bios you believe may be causing it18:36
flaccid_they are irrelevant to shutdown18:36
ads_flaccid: sure but the wake on lan could cause a reboot!!18:37
flaccid_i don't think there would be a setting in the bios config that would cause it. im saying your bios itself could be the problem.18:37
flaccid_ads_, the computer is alread awake and simply requesting a shutdown18:37
flaccid_but you believe whatever you want :)18:38
ads_flaccid_:  ok..  its a possibility its bios related but unlikely as i've yet to encounter this problem  ( but i cant rule it out!)18:38
flaccid_that doesn't mean anything18:39
ads_of course!!  as i said i wont rule it out.. but it does seem unlikely18:40
flaccid_when something goes wrong the first thing people blame is the last thing they changed and if nothing changed, it must be the OS. this is a bad assumption.18:40
flaccid_your bios is the most likely at this point18:40
daskreechads_: did you update your kernel?18:41
ads_daskreech: no i havent18:41
daskreechads_: ah.. no clue then sounds more likely that the hardware changed18:42
flaccid_ads_, how did you go on google?18:42
daskreechads_: If you like go get an older Live CD and see if it shuts down properly18:42
daskreech if it doesn't your hardware may have had a electron fart18:42
ads_ill try the live cd sounds a good idea...   what do you mean flaccid_   how did you go on google?18:43
flaccid_ads_, looking for a solution to your behaviour problem18:43
ads_im just going to remove th script and the rc.d association18:44
flaccid_ads_, err what script and rc.d association ?18:44
flaccid_wahts an rc.d associaton anyway18:45
ads_flaccid_: i had a wake on lan script18:47
flaccid_ok then rule out what you can :) not much on google at all which suggest likely not a linux/ubuntu bug18:47
ads_il try a live cd if this works i know its software18:48
ads_and then maybe i can rack any ones heads for some pointers18:48
ads_(if it works!)18:48
flaccid_once again you are assuming :)18:49
ads_haha noo no im not rulling anything out flaccid_  thats why im trying anything that points to an obvious solution18:50
flaccid_you said 'i know'.18:51
ads_i said "ill try a live cd if this works i know its software"  meaning if i can shutdown correctly using this live cd it will be highly unlikely its a hardware problem18:52
flaccid_know suggests 100% not 'unlikely'18:52
ads_ok flaccid_ using "know" as a basis of 100% certainty    ; please 'know' im not rulling anything out yet18:54
ads_thanks :)18:54
flaccid_hehee np :)18:54
flaccid_hey im not meaning to be rude to you18:54
flaccid_its all good..18:54

ct529I have got a problem here: I have to send the output of my laptop to an external screen. The laptop screen is 1920 x 1200 the external screen is 1680 x 1050. When I connect the external screen it swicthes to 1024 x 768 on both outputs (laptop screen and external monitor). I cannot reverse the selection: only way is restarting the x server. kubuntu 804 with KDE 3.5.9 or could use 4.0.3. Anyone who can help?19:03
flaccid_shane_, ok well here is the best i can find really http://www.jumpingbean.co.za/blogs/mark/linux-ati-driver-tutorial-how-to19:03
flaccid_ct529, driver?19:04
shane_flaccid_: ok ill look into that site also i like kubuntu and i have it on my secondarie sys also but is kubuntu the best linux for a newbie or is there a better starter for me that will work with my config on my 64 bit sys19:04
SlimeyPeteubuntu/kubuntu are pretty good for newbies, yes.19:05
flaccid_shane_, its the best and the most popular distro in general19:06
daskreechshane_: Newbie to what? Linux?19:06
flaccid_but there is not best..19:06
daskreech"best"19:06
flaccid_!best19:06
ubottuUsually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors. Do NOT take polls in the channel. If you insist on getting people's opinions, ask BestBot in #ubuntu-bots.19:06
ct529flaccid_: card is NVIDIA QUADRON 160019:06
daskreechthere is no best mostly19:06
daskreechha ha the best bot that's pretty funny19:06
flaccid_ct529, no the dirver you are using ?19:06
flaccid_bestbot /me laughs19:07
shane_daskreech: yes to linux , i am one of the ones microcrap desided to get rid of by making me purchase a new product key and i wont give them nomore money for ther flawed systems19:07
flaccid_nice19:07
* daskreech grins at flaccid_19:08
ct529flaccid_: how do I disvover what driver is the graphic card using?19:08
daskreechshane_: I'd actaully advocate that you play with 32 bit first then ease to 64 bit19:08
daskreech 64bit in Linux is many tiemes better than Windows except for teh parts that makes windows suck19:08
daskreechpeople who hide code and refuse to update it for 64 bit19:09
ct529flaccid_: sorry! how do I **discover** what driver is the graphic card using?19:09
daskreechThis means Java (not so much anymore) and flash19:09
shane_daskreech:  yah i was considering that but i run a p4 in 32 bit and my pd is 64 so do i want to limit my system by taking it down to 3219:09
pimjava and flash are easy to install19:09
pimYou can find a very good script for installing the 32-bit version of browsers on ubuntu forums19:10
daskreechshane_: How much RAM do you have in it?19:10
shane_daskreech: im aware that most releises are for 32 and iv had to look around to make sure that the 64 is compatible but i am wondering if it will slow the pd down in 3219:10
shane_my p4 is 1.5 and my pd is 219:10
daskreechIt's likely to speed it up for most calculations19:11
shane_in 3219:11
daskreechbut regardless unless it's huge calculations or massive gobs of RAM i'm not sure youi'll see that much difference19:11
hspkhol19:12
shane_daskreech: ok ill install the 32 bit kubuntu i have but still am i gonna beable to get the ati 1600 to work in kubuntu proper or is the another linux based OS that will work best with my hardware19:12
daskreechLinux is linux mostly19:13
daskreechthe only thing that really matters is the date and acquisition type19:13
pimhardware support is in the Kernel19:13
hspk19:13
shane_so it wont matter i can continue kubu i just may need to search more to get the drivers working right19:13
flaccid_ct529, check xorg.conf device section - driver. if none is listed xorg will use a free one like vesa etc.19:15
engineercat /etc/X11/xorg | grep Driver19:16
engineercat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver19:16
ct529flaccid_: there is no driver section in the xorg.conf19:20
ct529flaccid_: strange because th card works properly19:20
ct529flaccid_: how do I check which free driver is the graphic crad using?19:20
daskreechct529: I think you can just ype xrandr19:22
flaccid_ct529, /var/log/Xorg.0.log so its using vesa or possible ati or radeon19:22
ct529daskreech:  flaccid_ http://paste.ubuntu.com/18844/ for xrandr19:24

kalorindaskreech: do you use wireless at all with a notebook?20:49
Pennycookgandhi_: You could try running "sudo aptitude full-upgrade" to upgrade all the packages, but that won't help with why Adept isn't running; if you type "kdesu adept_manager" into a terminal then it'll probably show you an error message.20:50
PennycookHaza: sun-java6-jdk20:50
HazaPennycook: Cheers!20:51
HazaI just found it20:51
HazaI didn't realise that you can auto complete the file names20:51
HazaI always wondered how people remembered the names of packages :)20:51
trappistyou can even auto-complete package names20:51
trappisttry sudo apt-get install libki<tab><tab>20:52
Hazatrappist: Thats what i did. Very useful indeed! :)20:52
daskreech!tab20:53
ubottuYou can use <tab> for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.20:53
HazaHow about this next one. How do i list all the java versions installed on my box and then set the default? I did it a couple of days ago in the terminal but i cannot remember20:53
daskreechrun . /etc/bash_completion for more auto complete madness :)20:53
HazaBut i do rememeber by default the jvm is the GNU one20:53
Hazaand i need the sun one20:53
daskreech!alternatives20:54
ubottuTo change the default applications system-wide, use 'sudo update-alternatives --all' in a terminal.20:54

HazaSo, again, if i remember correctly. I now need to set the JAVA_HOME variable. I think i defined this in my user's .bashrc file at the end. What are the two lines i need again?21:00
HazaSomething like export ....21:00
Hazaand CLASSHPATH= .....21:00
Vermuxhow do I see contents of a text file that was created with windows? the name of the file has spaces in it21:00
trappistHaza: yeah, export CLASSPATH=/path/to/classpath21:00
trappistVermux: escape the space "like\ this" or use tab completion21:01
Hazatrappist: And is there not another line i have to define?21:01

anom01yanyone here think oss would be ok for a new sound card (creative XFI Extreme pci-e)22:18
ganeshok will try that22:18
todd__My guess would be modules-generic probably works on either processor set, modules-386 probably is optimized for i386 (32 bit) systems, and most likely there is one for the amd-64 processor family as well22:19
Pennycookganesh: The generic package always depends on the latest module available (ie if you install it it will auto-upgrade your virtualbox modules when a new kernel is released)22:19
