__alexconrad__hi, I need help with dpkg-preconfigure. I'd like to automate the installation of sun-java6-jre_6-06-0ubuntu1_all.deb, but I need to accept terms and conditions, which is not suitable for automation. How can I avoid this, I think dpkg-preconfigure is the way to go, but I'm not sure how to use it.08:37
=== __alexconrad__ is now known as AlexCONRAD
ablomenAlexCONRAD, i think you might have to make your own package (or edit the existing one), i dont see any options in apt etc to automaticly let it choose yes, the dpkg-preconfigure just lets you answer the questions before installation, you will still have to press yes afaik09:07
ablomencant find anything on google either09:07
AlexCONRADablomen: i'm using preseeding to automaticly answer question, but as java in not in the CD, i didn't put the .deb under the /pool structure of the CD09:08
ablomenhmm, and you cant create your own iso to do that? or is it to late for that?09:14
AlexCONRADablomen: well, I've tried remastering a xubuntu CD09:28
AlexCONRADbut it's so heavy doing that, you need to create gpg keys, regenerate all kinds of meta data files and such09:28
AlexCONRADplus, i failed doing so, the installation was much longer than the original ... I must have screwed something09:29
cider, now my terminal is all screwed up, the appearance is hazy, and no input is visible09:39
cider upgraded my xubuntu from 7.10 to 8.0409:40
AlexCONRADablomen: for your information, I think I have found the answer to my question: debconf-set-selections09:51
AlexCONRADthat should help putting the packages questions into the DB conf09:51
cidersorry, I'll re-word, I upgraded my xubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04, now my terminal is all screwed up, the window appears out of sync, and when you type, no input is visible09:53
AlexCONRADthat way, I can pre-answer the question, and when i'll run the java install, it will see the questions have already been answered09:53
AlexCONRADsorry cider, I'm not xubuntu expert user... I wish i could help09:53
AlexCONRADi'm new to desktop environement09:53
ablomenAlexCONRAD, ah nice, is it working?09:59
AlexCONRADablomen: well ... this actually only sets the answers in the database ... I don't know yet how to retrieve the questions from the deb file to answer them10:00
AlexCONRADablomen: that was posted on a list: echo "sun-java5-jdk shared/accepted-sun-dlj-v1-1 boolean true" | debconf-set-selections10:01
AlexCONRADbut Im' not sure I do have the same "question" from my debs10:02
ablomenhmm10:02
AlexCONRADmaybe I have to query the .deb file with somehow to show me that info10:02
ablomenyeah you could try extracting it and then grepping all the files10:03
AlexCONRADright, i'm just don't know how to do that yet10:04
ablomenehm i think you can just extract a .deb file with the archive manager10:05
ablomenlemme check10:05
ablomenyeah you can just right click on a file and choose archive manager10:06
ablomenin there are tar.gz files that you can just extract to say your /tmp directory10:06
ablomenand then run grep -r "agree" * in the folder where you extracted the contents10:07
ablomenmaybe that will give you what you want to know10:07
AlexCONRADhum... I can try that, but I bet there is some command where you can just "command --get-selections mydeb.deb"10:09
AlexCONRADand it would just print out the data10:09
AlexCONRADbecause I need to do that for multiple file, so unpacking the deb is not a solution10:10
ablomenheh yeah if there is a command for that that would be easyer :P10:10
AlexCONRADwhen googling "debconf-set-selections", I expect to see some people that show how to extract the selections from a deb file, darn ...10:11
AlexCONRAD"debconf-set-selections can be used to pre-seed the debconf database with answers, or to change answers in the database. Each question will be marked as seen to prevent debconf from asking the question interactively."10:12
ciderI upgraded my xubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04, now my terminal is all screwed up, the window appears out of sync, and when you type, no input is visible. Can anyone help?10:19
ablomencider, can you defign screwed up and out of sync? (maybe a screenshot or two?)10:20
ciderok hang on10:25
ciderwhere would you suggest a screenshot be placed?10:25
ablomeni think you can upload it to http://paste.ubuntu.com10:26
ablomenoh no, wait a sec10:26
ablomengrr10:28
ablomenjust use something like http://imageshack.us/10:28
ablomenor http://tinypic.com/10:28
ablomenshould both work fine10:28
AlexCONRADablomen: http://blog.hjksolutions.com/articles/category/solutions10:30
AlexCONRADthis says I need to install the package first by hand, and query the answers from the database10:30
ablomenoh nice10:31
* ablomen is gonna bookmark that just in case10:32
ciderhttp://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh108/malsgigphotos/terminal.jpg10:32
AlexCONRADcider: the pixel artifacts... I think this might come from a font option10:33
AlexCONRADthe color Aberration10:33
ciderwas ok, til upgrade10:34
AlexCONRADtry going in Applications > Setting Manager > User interface and at the bottom of the windows, you'll have something about fonts and "use sub-pixel hinting"10:35
ablomenwoah never seen anything like that10:35
AlexCONRADtry playing with that10:35
ablomenAlexCONRAD, the whole window is screwed up too though10:35
cider"use sub-pixel hinting" did nothing10:36
AlexCONRADright10:36
ablomencider, after trying AlexCONRAD's thing, you might wanna try creating a new user, loging in to that user and open the terminal etc10:36
ablomenif its a problem in a user specific config file somewhere , that should fix that10:36
ciderI'll enable that and log out , see if thast works10:37
ciderbrb10:37
AlexCONRADcider: it turns out I felt on this article a few days ago: http://www.zarb.org/~gc/html/subpixel-hinting.html10:37

AlexCONRADcider: it turns out I felt on this article a few days ago: http://www.zarb.org/~gc/html/subpixel-hinting.html10:38
AlexCONRADyour windows looks even more broken that the article's issue, but just in case ... you can keep that somewhere in your mind10:38
AlexCONRADcider: but ... is this happening *only* on the terminal ?10:39
AlexCONRADthe rest looks okay10:39
cideryes10:40
cideronly on terminal10:40
AlexCONRADif you have been playing with the terminal's look and feel, you might want to reset things... maybe settings have changed and might screw your window ... i don't knwo. ..10:40
AlexCONRADmaybe like deleting (backup) the config file where the terminal's preferences are stored10:41
cideronly thing i did was upgrade10:41
AlexCONRADcider: maybe the API of the conf file has changed between the two version10:42
cidermmm10:42
AlexCONRADalthough, I don't belive that's the issue...10:42
AlexCONRADbut you could give it a try10:42
AlexCONRADi don't know where the terminal's conf is stored though10:42
AlexCONRADcider: have you tried reinstalling the terminal app ?10:44
ciderbelieve I did, will try again10:44
AlexCONRADlike, totally remove it (purge) and reinstall10:44
cidermmm, fixed, uninstalled the xfce terminal emulator, and installed a different one from add/remove and all seems to be well11:08

olafskihey guys.. I'm trying to get the nvidia-glx-legacy driver to work with my tnt2; it works now but it won't go over 800x600, while I need 1440x900. Could anyone give me some pointers? I've tried quite many things that I found on the ubuntu forums, but couldn't get it over 1280x102414:45
AlexCONRADhi, what's the package that holds the kernel sources ?14:45
TheSheepolafski: try increasing the video memory in bios14:50
olafskihmm.. a tnt2 has shared memory?14:50
TheSheepolafski: you can also examine the logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.lo to see why it is rejecting the resolutions14:51
olafskior does that not matter.. I'll check it out :) using the modeline gtf gave me doesn't work anyhow14:51
TheSheepolafski: no idea, but it's a common pitfall14:51
olafskiah that sounds like it's worth a shot14:51
olafskiI'm getting quite tired of working with no legacy drivers :<14:51
olafskiI don't really see any errors in there, except stuff like this:14:54
olafski(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "1600x1200" (width too large for virtual size)14:54
olafskiI'll go check out the bios14:55
TheSheepolafski: you're sure it's using the nvidia driver, not the vesa one?14:58
olafskilet's say I'm not too linux-savvy.. I enabled the restricted driver in the restricted driver manager and it says it's enabled :$14:59
olafskiworks a lot faster than before I enabled it, but only on the low resolution15:00
olafskiafter adding the modeline I got from gtf, I can only do 640x480 (no other resolutions in the list), before it showed everything up to 800x60015:01
TheSheepthe logs should say which driver X are loading15:03
TheSheepsomewhere a little before the line you pasted15:03
olafskiI'll check15:03
olafskihard to read with this low resolution :(15:04
olafskiI can't find it :{15:07
olafskihm guess I'll give up for now.. time to go home :p15:15

ojohnI have a bootloader problem I hope someone might be able to help with22:43
xTheSaintxDoes anyone know any good styles i can install?22:43
anom01yxTheSaintx I am trying to install from the install version22:43
ojohnI used EasyBCD, in Vista, to modify the boot22:44
anom01ybut I get random errors here and there, not sure if thats because the cdrom is crappy or not22:44
ojohnbut the timeout was changed to 0 seconds for the initial screen which prompts to choose either Windows or Linux22:44
anom01ythe computer only has 64mb ram22:44
ojohnsince it defaults to Linux, that means I can't choose Vista at all - because of the 0 sec timeout22:44
anom01yStroganoff: I think the laptop only has 64mb ram22:45
anom01ycould that be the prob ?22:45
ojohnif choose vista in GRUB, it goes back to the screen with the 0 sec timeout, then back to GRUB22:45
anom01yI guess the laptop is garbage22:45
