Colonel_Panichow do I keep running out of disk space?01:40
terran4000Colonel_Panic: maybe it's not actually 9.2gb?01:41

Colonel_Panicand01:41

Colonel_Panicthere should be at lead half a GB free01:42
terran4000do "df -h"01:42

=== luis__ is now known as tigremx1

terran4000then umount /home01:44
terran4000then try: ls /home01:44
terran4000if anything shows up in there then (assuming umount worked)01:45
terran4000they probably shouldn't be there01:45
terran4000BUT be warned ... usually NOT a good idea to just randomly umount /home.01:45

terran4000and then mount the root partition into a temp folder01:45

hotpocketoh ok01:48
Colonel_Panicit's a safety measure01:48
hotpocketso, it will say root?01:48
Walzmynthat is one of the primary reasons linux is superiour to winders - the default is to be a normal user and you assumn admin privilidges only when you need to01:49
Colonel_Panicbetter than doing it the Windows way and making OS-level functions completely transparent01:49
terran4000Colonel_Panic: streaming media isn't 'really' streaming, it has to buffer a bit (usually in memory) but if it buffers to disk then yeah ... could be troublesome01:49
Colonel_Panicthat's what I'm thinking01:49
Colonel_Panicif the buffer fills up real quick (say, after a second or two) then it will just stop01:49
Walzmynhotpocket, yes, i do not have one i can look at right quick, but if you swithced users to root, it would say root in the CLI line there.01:49

Colonel_Panicjesus this is almost as bad as dealing with Windows02:05

compilerwriterPerhaps BluesKaj I oversimplified my question.  What I would like to know is what is wm responsible for doing?  How does it interact with the desktop environment?  Kind of the kernel and the shell thing only with wm and de.02:05
BluesKajit manages which desktop environment you're using and the apps installed in that environment02:07
Walzmyncompilerwriter, AFAIK the windows manager is what makes the actual windows floating around and sends GUI signels from them to whatever backend is associated with them02:07
Walzmyncompilerwriter, the DE using the WM plus other apps to make a complete system to work with02:07
compilerwriterSo the it is the wm that is telling the computer that I am logged in oh a dozen or more times, and then it treats each window as a sort of terminal instance?02:08
stdincompilerwriter: window manager is responsible for managing the windows, it gives them borders and controls and allows you to specify which to give focus to02:08
stdineach time you login, one window manager instate in run for that session02:09
compilerwriterIt then also manages what then I see on the display file?02:10
compilerwriterSo if I were to log in terminal only I would not fire up a window manager at all?02:10
stdina window manager needs an X session to run on02:10
terran4000yes to the second.02:10
stdinit has nothing to do with files, just windows for applications02:11
Walzmyncompilerwriter, yes, you'd be just like my server upstairs which could just about have the monitor removed02:11
compilerwriterSo then it is X that tells the computer I am logged in a dozen times.  The window manager then manages all the windows in the X session?02:12
stdinno, X doesn't tell the system how many times you're logged in02:12
stdinwhen you login you start a shell, that then runs X, the WM and everything else02:13
Walzmynwhy are you logged in a dozen times?02:15
stdinone X session and 11 shells, easy ;)02:15
compilerwriterWell since my computer fires up a sort of windowed login and I don't start X manually.  I would guess that there is some sort of shell that is running that I log into that forks another shell and an X-session that then has a WM and DE of its own?02:15
Walzmyncompilerwriter, wikipedia might be able to explain this better than we are02:15
stdincompilerwriter: yeah, KDM actually starts a shell and runs a script (that then starts X for you) and does the rest02:16
stdinsame goes for GDM/XDM02:16
Colonel_PanicOK well the streaming video appears to be OK now...02:17
TonrenI'm on Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 4.1, and my printout is REALLY REALLY slow.02:17
Colonel_Panicbut to fix this disk space issue, should I boot to a LiveCD?02:17
compilerwriterWalzmyn when I do a who -ra it shows that user LOGIN is running on tty1-6 Since I am the only person logged into my machine I suppose I am those six people.02:17
TonrenIt set it up and configured everything instantly, but the page and printer only move once every 10 seconds or so.02:18
Colonel_PanicWhat can I do from a live CD to correct the situation>02:18
Colonel_Panicwouldn't a partitining tool be a better option?02:18
stdincompilerwriter: LOGIN is not a user02:18
stdincompilerwriter: it's the "command" that's listens on a TTY for a username/pass to start a shell for you02:19
Walzmyncompilerwriter, you just went over my head, but i think LOGIN is an application, not a user02:19
Walzmynyeah, what stdin said.02:19
Colonel_Panicand I cannot enable or disable, or uninstall any firefox extensions either02:20
Colonel_Panicit keeps telling me the extension will be enabled/disabled when Firefox restarts, but when I restart Firefox nothing happens02:20
BluesKajColonel_Panic, search for GParted partition editor , burn it and run it as a live cd to setup or edit the partitions ...it's my fav02:21
Colonel_PanicOK lemme try that.02:21
compilerwriterSo the window manater literally just manages the windows that I have opened?  It requires and X session in order to do the job?  So where does compiz come in to the equation.  Is it the window manager?02:25
Colonel_Panicany ideas on the Firefox addons problem?02:25
Walzmyncompiz is a windows manager that replaces kwin (KDE's manager) and adds in a bunch of eye candy02:25
stdincompilerwriter: yep, compiz is a window manager, a compositing enabled window manager02:25
BluesKajColonel_Panic, most addons won't work on a development browser like FF302:25
Walzmynexcept i think they changed the name when compiz and beryl re-merged.02:25
Colonel_Panicand there's no way to step back down to Firefox 2?02:25
stdinColonel_Panic: there is02:25
compilerwriterYes I am likeing some of the eye candy, I like flipping my cube about.02:25
stdinColonel_Panic: just install firefox-202:25
Colonel_Panicsome of them were working  fine only yesterday02:25
BluesKajyes, you can go into adept and remove ff3 and reinstall ff202:25
Walzmyncompilerwriter, the expose` feature was my favorite when i had it on my desktop02:25
compilerwriterSome of the  effects don't seem to be working as I thought they would though.  I also had to disable all 3D screensavers to get round a display freeze up problem a few days ago.02:25
compilerwriterWalzmyn what is the expose feature02:25
Colonel_Panicit wont work02:25
Walzmyncompilerwriter, open  3 or 4 windows and press F802:25
Colonel_Panicit says "firefox 2 is already the newest version"02:25
nyltHi - I'm wanting to create a simple slideshow that will show photographs, and play music in the background.  Are there any good linux tools for doing this?02:25
BluesKajColonel_Panic, did you remove ff3 first ?02:26
Walzmyncompilerwriter, compiz is an unfinished product, but it's got promise. My old distro had it setup very nice. Kubuntu seems to leave it for you to do most of the setup and i didn't have the patcience.02:26
Walzmynnylt, have you tried openoffice?02:26
nyltWalzmyn: i've tried ooimpress, but the file sizes seemed to get really large02:27
Walzmynnylt, ok. I've never done a slideshow, OOo would be my only guess.02:28
compilerwriterwalzmyn isn't compiz the default on Hardy Heron?  Or was it just sort of upgraded because I was playing with it on Gutsy when the upgrade came through?02:28
Walzmyncompilerwriter, no, the default will always be Kwin it's part of KDE02:29
Walzmyncompilerwriter, but you can easily enable it.02:29
LmnbvHello everybody! I need some help! I have set up my 5.1 system, but movie and audio programms are using only the 2 front. I configured settings to 5.1 output without any results. Can anybody help me? What's the matter?02:29

MachinTrucChoseWalzmyn: I have Gparted already. Doesn't show anything. Qparted won't launch for some reason.02:37

XavuraNow I just need to get the Internet working and it's proving a real pain the the ass.04:40
XavuraMy router is connected to my PC via USB, someone told me it'd be easier if it was Ethernet but that's not an option04:41
Xavura+ my router sucks, so where do I go from here?04:41

XavuraAnyone? Anything? I've been stuck for the last 2 hours with this.04:46
epimethXavura: didn't find anything on google?04:48
XavuraI ALWAYS search Google before asking anything, anywhere04:49
XavuraAll I've found on Google, is that apparently routers connected via USB are *really hard* to set-up on Linux04:49
XavuraNowhere have I found a way to actually do it.04:49
epimethhmm04:49
epimethwhat router do you have?04:49
XavuraBT Voyager 205 ADSL Router04:49
XavuraOne of the worst ever made, I'm quite proud of it04:49
Xavura...04:50
[zEr0-x]when I'm installing kubuntu, the installation stops at 82%.... anybody can help me ?05:00
epimethXavura: sorry buddy... I can't find anything either05:01
BluesKajXavura, use the ethernet cable instead of the usb for linux05:02
XavuraI CAN'T.05:02
XavuraNot a possibility as I said before.05:02
BluesKajbummer05:02
tekgeekltis this a laptop? or a desktop05:03
XavuraSo Linux can't even connect to the Internet with a router connected via USB05:03
BluesKajwhy not buy a cheapie ethernet hub like a linksys05:03
Xavura...and everyone always told me how great it was05:03
XavuraBecause I shouldn't have to05:03
Xavuraplus I'm broke.05:03
BluesKajhook the linksys to the ethernet input on the router05:03
XavuraI don't have a linksys.05:04
tekgeekltthe problem is the manufacturers don't bother making items that are supported for linux ... you usually have to pay more for network devices that will work with linu05:04
tekgeekltlinux05:04
XavuraWell that's pretty dumb.05:04
tekgeekltyea it is05:04
XavuraSo I've just wasted 6 hours getting the HDD working and installing Kubuntu, to have no Internet05:05
XavuraThat's great.05:05
BluesKajonly for wireless , tekgeeklt ...most routers run linux right out of the box05:05
XavuraMine isn't wireless.05:05
Xavuraand it certainly isn't working out of the box05:05
XavuraKubuntu doesn't even say anything when I plug the USB cable in05:05
XavuraStupid...05:05
[zEr0-x]Xavura, havent' you try to find the driver at the manufacturer webpage ?05:05
XavuraI have05:06
haryonomy RAM is 384 is it enough for running Linux Kubuntu and all application?05:06
tekgeekltwell yea hardwired they work fine ... but there is alot of network cards out there that are strickly for windows... they usually have less hardware on them and windows emulates it via software which is another stupid resource hog05:06
XavuraThey only have drivers for Windows and Mac OS X05:06
XavuraTypical.05:06
XavuraThere has to be something I can do, seriously... this is so retarded it's not even funy05:06
Xavurafunny*05:07
tekgeekltif the router had a cat 5 plug on it I would say buy a 10 dollar card and a 5 dollar cable05:07
tekgeekltbut then that defeats the idea you are trying to work on05:07
BluesKajharyono, depends what apps you ...heavy video laden apps might run a bit slow05:08
XavuraIt has a cat5 port05:08
Xavuraand I have a cable05:08
Xavurabut it's NOT an option05:08
tekgeekltwhy is that not an option?05:08
XavuraThe ethernet port on my PC won't work.05:08
[zEr0-x]You should have tryed kubuntu without installing05:08
tekgeekltits not working .. I would try going into the bios and turn it on ... I have had mine turned off in my computer in the bios05:09
BluesKajthe ethernet port should be easy to setup , Xavura05:09
tekgeekltbut then you can buy a network card and plug that in05:09
XavuraHmm05:09
XavuraI'm on Windows right now and05:09
XavuraI went to the device manager05:09
haryonoMy RAM is 384 is it enough for KDE Amarok and Kaffeine CD/VCD Player ?05:09
Xavuraand to the network card05:09
Xavuraand lo and behold05:09
Xavura"This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"05:09
tekgeekltalot of times the built in network card is turned off in the bios if you have been using a usb or wireless to save resources05:09
XavuraI checked the bios05:10
XavuraIt's on.05:10
tekgeekltokay05:11
XavuraSo...05:12
XavuraBut I launched Terminal05:12
Xavuraand typed ifconfig05:12
Xavuraand it showed eth005:12
Xavuraso, doesn't that mean that the ethernet thing IS working?05:12
BluesKajharyono, as long as you don't run anything else at the same time05:12
Lichtehow do I keep Audacity from starting jackd on startup ??05:13
tekgeeklteth0 is just saying ethernet port 0 I think ...05:15
XavuraYeah but05:15
XavuraIf the ethernet port was broken or not working05:15
Xavurait wouldn't show it, right?05:15
tekgeekltyea05:15
BluesKajyeah Xavura , you still have to configure the ethernet connection05:16
XavuraThat doesn't matter05:16
XavuraWindows says my ethernet device is not working properly05:16
XavuraSo I need to figure out why and fix it05:16
tekgeekltyou could try the dma and irq settings but windows should just see it05:16
epimethXavura: when you plug a cable in to the ethernet ports, does a light appear in each?05:16
tekgeekltbut fixing it in windows does not mean it will just work in ubuntu ...05:16
haryonoBluesKaj  dont runing anything else u mean?05:16
XavuraNot sure epimeth05:17
XavuraThe light on my router didn't glow05:17

|Toadmy comptuer just updated it's intel 8xx/9xx video drivers, but i'm running amd/ati05:55
|Toadwhy is it updating intel drivers?05:55
|Toadi just got into a little quarrel with a buddy on how oses do update thier video drivers when updates come out but only video drivers they are using05:56
|Toadwhich makes sense05:56
|Toadbut then what just happened?05:56
Jucato|Toad: basically the package manager will update anything that can be updated *if* it is installed. whether or not you're actually using those doesn't matter05:58
|Toadthats what i said05:59
|Toadbut he said if it updated it, the computer must be using it05:59
|Toadbut i dont take him seriously, because he's an apple faboy05:59
* Jucato suggests your friend see a doctor...05:59
Jucatoheh I have no idea how Apple updates stuff06:00
Jucatobut that's how it is in most Linux distributions. I'm guessing what you saw updated was the generic intel drivers that come with all basic Kubuntu installatios (the free intel drivers)06:00
|Toadthat's exactly what i said06:01
|Toadit came with the installation06:01
|Toadand it keeps everythign up to date06:01
|Toadit makes sense, if adapt sees it as installed, when an update comes out, it will tell me about it06:01
|Toadi told him thaat all oses have basic core drivers for all types of hardware, not just the ones you need06:02
|Toadthe plug and play model wouldn't work otherwise06:02
|Toadthank you Jucato for proving me right06:03
Jucato|Toad: if he argues why Kubuntu installs stuff you don't need, well tell him that Kubuntu is made to install and work on almost any hardware combination as much as possible06:04
Jucato(try doing that with a OS X! :P)06:04

eagles0513875Daisuke_Ido lol15:31

pulaskiI use kubuntu 7.10.  Adept-Notifier crashes after X loads.  I've found a bug report #134722 whose backtrace matches mine.  I is listed as resolved but it is an old bug.  Can someone suggest a workaroung or fix.  BTW after this the Adept keeps running in the background and blocks all the other apt processes.21:37
jussi01pulaski: have you got the gutsy updates repo on?21:38

pulaskijussi01: Thanks for responding.  I'm pretty sure, let me check my sources.list21:39
Xcaliber009oops sorry21:39
FirefisheIs there a place in kubuntu where one can select usb sound as default for all outputs?  I know of gnome-sound-properties under the ubuntu desktop, but I can't seem to find any for kde/kubuntu.21:39
jussi01Xcaliber009: I would suggest try asking/searching on the ubuntuforums - I find for such a question I usually get a better more in depth answer there21:40
jussi01Firefishe: I don know about gui, but run asoundconf list then asoundconf set-default-card <card-name-here>21:41
Xcaliber009jussi01: I've been through there, my problem is more n00bish than most of the things I've found on the forums that have been pretty specific21:41
Firefishejussi01:  that might work21:41
Firefishethanks21:41
Xcaliber009jussi01: I guess my biggest problem has been that I get a "cannot resolve hostname"21:41
jussi01Xcaliber009: ok, where does that occur? (when you do what?)21:42
pulaskijussi01: yes, both deb and deb-src gutsy-updates main restricted are there21:42

ubottuLaunchpad bug 134722 in ubuntu "FIrefox: ed2k" [Undecided,Invalid] https://launchpad.net/bugs/13472221:43
Xcaliber009jussi01: but I have my hostname as <hostname> and domain as <domain.name>, and the ip address on the if is aliased as <hostname.domain.name>21:43
jussi01pulaski: what was the bug number again?21:43
Xcaliber009jussi01: after editing scripts and doing reloades of the services21:43
jussi01Xcaliber009: hrm21:43
pulaskijussi01: 134722 was the bug number21:44
jussi01Pullus: are you certain?21:44
pulaskijussi01: yes just doublechecked21:45
jussi01Xcaliber009: unfortunately, im out of my depth here, however, is this for a server? if so, try asking in #ubuntu-server - but be patient, can be a little slow in there sometimes21:45
Xcaliber009jussi01: I've also re-run the exim4-config a couple of times to try to change the settings on it, but it's still having the same problem and I don't believe the MTA is running21:45
=== myEqR|inet is now known as myEqR|inet2
Firefishejussi01: Well, that worked for amarok, but it's weird.  The usb headset is now working, but the volume control on the headset is slaved to kmix. Amarok is operating separately from everything else.  Man I wish gnu/linux/kde would adopt a central sound server for all desktops.21:46
Xcaliber009jussi01: yeah lol, its a Mailman server, but for it to work you have to have both apache and an MTA configured, I will go check them out, thanks!21:46
pulaskijussi01: I added a hoary-backports and a hoary extras main universe multiverse restricted yesterday.  I have a backup sources.list I made before the changes.  Perhaps I should go back to the origninal.  Does that make sense jussi01?21:47
jussi01pulaski: you should never add repos from another version of ubuntu imho21:51
pulaskijussi01: I was following the ubuntuforums tasks here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=50859,  Ok thanks I'll see if I can remove the packages I installed and return to my original sources.list21:52
