sharpe_uknot really a fair comparison, better operating systems existed prior to ME therefore ME was crap, XMMS for a while was about the best media player for linux (at least that I found for playing shoutcast streams)00:12
Lupus-SLEIt was about as easy on the eyes as a knife00:13

epimethdraik: yes... it does that01:24
draikepimeth: How do I make it not do that?01:24
epimethbut what you can do is set up the card manually through network manager01:24
draikI have01:25
draikIt still forgets everything01:25
draikI even set it up to activate when it boots, that disolves once I close KNetworkManager01:26
epimethdunno... I only use dhcp01:26
epimethI use manual configs for servers01:26

epimethouch01:30
epimethI'd love to help, but I can't :-)01:30
sensaeFdisk won't write any partitions to the md device, it just spits out an error 22. The built in server partitioner tells me the rest of the space is "unusable" because 1 partition is too many primary partitions01:30
sensae:/01:30
epimethhave you tried searching for "raid" in https://help.ubuntu.com/community01:30
Lupus-SLEIs it actually possible to get kubuntu to install to a partition on a raid drive?01:31
monkeybritchesIs it a scsi raid?01:31
sensaeNope01:31
sensaeNope to the SCSI question01:31
monkeybritchesSATA 'fake raid' then?01:31
Lupus-SLEBecause that would make something for me considerably easier01:31
slybootsIs there a guide for setting up a Macbook pro in Kubuntu, (instead of Ubuntu)01:31
sensaeTwo PATA, one SATA01:31
sensaeWell I'm using MDADM so it's fakeraid no matter01:31
monkeybritchesI would start by looking in the BIOS01:32

Lupus-SLEIs kubuntu install to raid possible?01:32
monkeybritchesIf it's an onboard raid, it will need to be enabled01:32
monkeybritchesThat's assuming it is...01:33
sensaeNo, it's software RAID. mdadm is kernel-level01:33
monkeybritchesslyboots: There should be little difference between setting up Kubuntu and Ubuntu01:34
monkeybritchessensae: Well you've got me there, I have yet to try that01:34
sensaeLupus-SLE: I wouldn't see why not. I've had text-only server installs on RAID.01:34
draikepimeth: I have set it up with Automatic DHCP and still won't do it01:34
Lupus-SLEsensae: My friend has 2 sata drives01:35
Lupus-SLEI'm thinking of giving him a fresh OS install01:35
Lupus-SLEMostly because everythings fucked up01:35
Lupus-SLEBut I'm thinking if I could I might reinstate his raid01:35
sensaeLupus-SLE: I don't think the standard 'desktop' Kubuntu or Ubuntu discs support RAID graphically, but it shouldn't be that hard to set up01:36
Lupus-SLEDoes it depend on the driver as much as it does in Windows?01:36
sensaeI'm not sure how Windows software RAID works, I've never done it.01:36
Lupus-SLEBecause that gave me HELL01:36
sensaebut mdadm is just a kernel module. You fdisk the drives as one big partition, id=fd (linux raid autodetect)01:37
Lupus-SLEsensae: I know little about sata and nothing about raid01:37
sensaeand then you do an mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --devices=2 /dev/sda /dev/sda (Or something similar)01:37
Lupus-SLESo... it's useless01:37
mrpenguinI installed nvidia drivers and now it doesnt use my samsung 24 inch monitor, can i get that back?01:37
sensaeand it creates a /dev/md0, and then you partition that device like a normal hard drive01:37

Walzmynthis is right damned anoying - I've managed to wade through this weird interface to create my movie, but I can't figure out how to save/export it01:49
BluesKajWalzmyn, just arrived ...what app did you use ?01:50
WalzmynBluesKaj, you saw my only comment, it's cinelerra01:50
keatonI'm having major issues installing Kubuntu on a friend's system.01:50
BluesKajoooh, not familiar with cinelerra at all :(01:51
WalzmynBluesKaj, the save function offers you different formats (avi, mpg) but it saves it as file.mpg.xml and nothing can us eit01:51
WalzmynAll I wanna do is trim a bit off one file and add another on the back of it01:51
Walzmynkeaton, what's the problem?01:52
keatonFirst, using the standard install CD dosen't work because neither the standard or vga video drivers work. Now I'm trying the alternative CD, and that dosen't work, because A) It says that something called APIC dosen't work, and B) When I pass 'noapic' on the boot line, when it trys to install the system it gives me this: Debootstrap Error: Failed to determine the codename for the release.01:52
BluesKajxml eh, maybe you need to use dvdauthor/makexml to create the dvd structure01:52
Walzmynkeaton what kinda computer?01:53
WalzmynBluesKaj, huh?01:53
BluesKajoh sorry , you obviously got it mpg'd , didn't realize01:54
WalzmynBluesKaj, don't think i need a dvd structure, this is a 1 min clip bound for youtube01:54
keatonAn HP Pavilion almost identical to mine, which works PERFECTLY I might add, except it uses Intel processors instead of AMD, and it's video card is a PCI Nvidia instead of an onboard Nvidia.01:54
Walzmynkeaton, fairly new?01:54
keatonYeah, less than 2 years old, 2 GB of RAM, 250 GB HDD, all good stuff.01:55
WalzmynBluesKaj, i don't care what format is gets out in, as long as youtube can read it. My mom wants to see the 5 month old playing with the dog01:55
keatonAlso, I forgot to mention, it can't determine network information either during the alternative installation.01:55
Walzmynkeaton, hmm, odd. You shouldn't need anything other than the regular CD - d'ya think the disk might be courpted?01:56
keatonAnd the alternate install goes reaaaaally slow.01:56
keatonIf you mean the installer CD, that's impossible, I burned it literally 30 minutes ago.01:56
keatonPlus, I got the same results a coulple months ago the last time I tired.01:56
keaton*tried01:56
Walzmynkeaton, i figured you were going to say that.01:56
keatonIt's really aggrivating, I've never had this much trouble putting linux on anything.01:57
Walzmynkeaton, well, my appligies, but I don't think I can help ya.01:57
keatonI'll try asking elsewhere, thanks for the help though.01:57
Walzmyntry googling that apci problem01:57
Walzmynyou might need to change something in the bios on that computer01:58
draikDoes anyone else have the same issue with KNetworkManager? The laptop won't go past connection to the router.01:58
BluesKajkeaton, definitely a strange problem, does it run a live cd ok ?01:59
Walzmyndraik, do you mean you can connect to the router but not to the internet?01:59
keatonNo, that's why I'm using the alternate.01:59
draikWalzmyn: Yes.01:59
keatonIt wouldn't boot because X couldn't start, and the Live CD's cli interface is garbadge.02:00
BluesKajgotta be hardware recognition02:00
Walzmyndraik, i've got a similar issue - my router does not like linux....02:00
Walzmyndraik, i'm dual bootin gmy desktop and the connection is better and fast with winders02:00
keatonI looked up APIC, which wouldn't start at the beginning, it's something called an Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller.02:00
BluesKajhmm keaton , does it have windows on it right now ?02:00
keatonIt's an essential part of the motherboard, and the system can't initialize it...02:00
keatonYes, it has XP Pro.02:01
Walzmyndraik, i switched this laptop from vista to linux and now it's a good bit slower on the net, but fine connecting to the router02:01
keatonUsing about 3/5ths of the drive, fyi.02:01
FreckledPI'm having troubles with my mixer under 8.04.  PCM is the only one that affects volume at all.  I have poked about and it appears that the mixer settings are pointing somehow mixed up (not sure what that means).  Anyone have an idea how to fix it?  (it's an Intel HD sound chip)02:01
draikWalzmyn: The strange part is that it used to go online with 7.10. With 8.04 I had it working two days ago. She rebooted and it was out. I had it on yesterday after applying "sudo dhclient eth0"02:01
Walzmynkeaton, be glad you don't have vista. clean install from the factory took up 40 gigs02:02
Walzmyndraik, just to cover the bases, you've rebooted the router and modem?02:02
draikWalzmyn: Yes02:02
keatonI meant that 3/5ths are partitioned NTFS, the rest is left empty for Linux.02:02
damien_Can someone help me install Java?02:03
Walzmynkeaton, and i meant that vista is a bloated resource hog  :)02:03
FreckledPsorry, what I mean is that there is somewhere a file that defines the device that the mixer affects, and the particular sliders of the mixer.  Anyone know where this file is and how to fix it?02:03
BluesKajFreckledP, alsamixer, in the terminal02:04
damien_Can someone help me install Java?02:04
FreckledPBluesKaj, right.  if I play with the master slider, it doesn't do anything.  only the PCM slider02:05

damien_epimeth: Thanks02:06
epimethno worries02:06
FreckledPBluesKaj, yes, I checked that.  From what I read, the problem is that the mixer uses device numbers (hex of some kind, i think) and that the 'devices' are mixed up.02:06
epimethWalzmyn: just if you're on dapper02:07
Walzmynwonder why not?02:07
damien_Okay, now I'm stuck at a screen that says <Ok> at the bottom and cannot get out of it02:08

FreckledPBluesKaj, this is the url/bug that it is mentioned in.  https://bugs.launchpad.net/alsa-driver/+bug/149622/comments/602:08
BluesKajFreckledP, you could try fooling with kmix , enable Master & PCM on the output tab , then CD & IEC playback (if listed) on the Input tab , next make sure Mix & IEC958 are enabled on the Switches tab , then click on Settings/Configure Kmix and apply02:08

Ferrenrockso i C02:59
FerrenrockI have arch on an old POS computer and it only has bash03:00
Ferrenrockso that's been hard to figure out03:00
Ferrenrockkubuntu uses dash right?03:00
intelikeyyes03:00
Ferrenrockhow big is the difference?03:00
intelikey"it only has bash" <<< i assume you mean "no gui"03:00
Ferrenrockyeah03:01
Ferrenrockpretty barebones03:01
FerrenrockI have nano and a gcc compiler and some other fun stuff03:01
Ferrenrockbut pretty basic03:01
intelikeyFerrenrock bash is installed as the default user shell dash is the default /bin/sh    dash is a fully posix compliant shell   it lacks many of the bash extentions and features but is quite usable.03:01
BluesKajintelikey, if I post a python script , can pick out the faults in it ?03:02
Ferrenrockso basically bash is almost an extension of dash--it just has extra commands?03:02
intelikeyprobably not.    but a shell script i might.03:02
intelikeyFerrenrock no.03:03
BluesKajwell it is a shell script really03:03
intelikeyBluesKaj lets not get nitpicky03:03
Ferrenrockso how different are we looking at this being?03:04
intelikeyFerrenrock bash is not really related to dash,  but both can provide a /bin/sh "shell"  some of the main differances is that dash is fully posix compliant and bash is not.  some of the bash tweeks like it's builtin echo command requiring the -e switch before it will recognize escaped chars is not posix.03:05
Betussomeone to set up an ATI 9250?03:06
intelikeyFerrenrock most of the things that keep bash from being fully posix are accepted by most as being "better"  but that's another topic altogather.   the size differance is pretty big between the two also.03:07
Ferrenrockwhat differences does posix compliance bring to the system?03:07
Ferrenrockin layman's terms, if you could03:07
BluesKajintelikey, ok , http://www.pastebin.ca/1046654 this script is in /etc/init.d and it's supposed to run as a daemon for the pyTivo app , which acts a server for media transfers to our TiVo.03:07
Betussomeone to set one ATI 9250?03:08
intelikeyon the surface little or none.  but when things like postinstallation scripts break because of non-posix code  it matters.03:08
intelikeyBluesKaj looking03:09
Ferrenrockintelikey: I read the wikipedia entry and it seems that posix is like a set of standards. Is that correct?03:09
intelikeyBluesKaj that's not python,  that a shell script03:10
intelikeyand judging from line one   it needs to be fully posix compliant or line one should read #!/bin/bash insted03:11
intelikeyFerrenrock yes it is.03:11
BluesKajyeah the actual pyTivo app is prolly python, sorry for the misleading statement03:11
intelikey!ati | Betus best i can do for ati is point you at this;03:12
ubottuBetus best i can do for ati is point you at this;: For Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto03:12
Ferrenrockand I bet that the bash community believes that these standards 'hold down' a shell from realizing a better potential, so they think that putting bash outside of these standards the shell can perform better?03:12
BluesKajok intelikey , thanks03:12
intelikeyBluesKaj welcome.03:12
intelikeyBluesKaj do you want me to debug the script ?03:13
intelikeyFerrenrock probably   you can ask in #bash  they are all about that.03:13
FerrenrockI'll bet03:14
BluesKajok, if you think it's required , intelikey03:14
intelikeyFerrenrock they will probably tell you that using the symlink /bin/sh to point to /bin/bash and starting it as /bin/sh will give you a posix compliant bash session.  but it does actually break a few minor standards.03:15
Ferrenrockbut isn't that just layering the sh over bash?03:16
intelikeyBluesKaj ummm checking $? on a command that was backgrounded may not work like you want it to   lines 29 & 3003:18
BluesKajyeah intelikey , that script tutorial suggested to use bin/sh to symlink to cause the script to be executed when the system goes down, or comes up.03:19
BluesKajok what do you suggest?03:20
asobii just wiped my ipod playlist with amarok, how do i get it back?03:20
intelikeyBluesKaj to test;   http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d6dcda2d303:21
intelikeyBluesKaj you will have to wait for the command to exit to recieve any exit code from it.   you can test for the existance of the command and the existance of it's target arg and use that for the return code   but you can't test for an exit code on a backgrounded process03:22
intelikeybtw  $?  is exitcode of the last "exited" process03:23
MachinatorSyveranyone know how to play mkv files? kaffiene has no audio, mplayer de-syncs sound and video and vlc randomly crashes or the video stops for a bit while the audio continues03:24
Ferrenrockintelikey do you know any good resources that will help me familiarize myself with dash? How did you become familiar with it?03:25
BluesKajwell, it calls up ffmpeg when a video transfer is executed from the the Tivo and it will fail if ffmpeg is already running for example03:25
intelikeyBluesKaj i'm just saying that line 30 will always be true.03:26
intelikeya more detailed example http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d43da428303:26
intelikeysorry line 31 my bad.03:27
intelikeythus you script will exit at line 31 every time.03:27
BluesKajshould I delete that line ?03:27
intelikeyno.03:27
intelikeyjust ammend the test to check for something useful03:28
intelikeychecking exitcode of & is kinda bogus  ;/  :)))03:28
BluesKajsorry , i don't understand ...this scripting is basicly greek to me03:29
intelikeygive me a minute  i'll clean it up a little.03:32
BluesKajok cool03:33
Picistdin: good thinking03:36
stdinbest to be safe :)03:36
BluesKaj*!*@unaffiliated/taggard ?03:37

kubuntu-user-neehi... my internet isn't reliable, sometimes it works, most times it doesn't... it will stop working after a few hours or even a few minutes... so i'm in a ubuntu live cd atm... someone mind helping me figure out the problem?03:43
kubuntu-user-neenever had this problem before in kubuntu03:43
kubuntu-user-neein suse, i was able to right click knetwork manager and select a wifi point to use, but wasn't able to do it in kubuntu.. though i think i've done it before in previous installations of it03:44
intelikeyBluesKaj have a look at     http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d10d38aae        see if it likes you any better ?03:45
intelikeyBluesKaj you also might get stdin to look at the py script    i here he reads snake tracks pretty well.03:45

intelikey                                    ^^03:48
intelikeythat's a question03:49
skreechHOw much slack does ext3 give to files?03:49
intelikey!compiz | caryjebus03:50
ubottucaryjebus: Kubuntu is not shipping with compiz installed or enabled by default. You can still install it and have your eyecandy goodness. The instructions are at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion - further help in #compiz-fusion03:50
skreech Iwas copying data across from a WIndows box to a Ext3 partition over ss03:50
skreechssh03:50
intelikeyskreech does that depend on the reserved bit ?03:50
skreechwhen I came back it was spitting a whole string of errors03:50
skreechI did a du -s on the ext3 partion and it was just over 14 GB03:50
skreechI did a du -s on the NTFS and it was just over 13 GB03:51
skreechcan I assume that everything got carried over?03:51
intelikeyprolly not.03:51
intelikeywhat kind of errors03:51
intelikey?03:51
skreechintelikey: Does what squashfs03:51
skreechintelikey: does what dpened on the reserved bit03:52
skreechintelikey: It was throwing squashfs errors03:52
intelikeythe file slack03:52
skreechmaybe03:52
skreechcan I get a count of the files in a directory structure?03:52
intelikeyskreech i thought you said ntfs and ext3  not squash ?03:52
skreechintelikey: doing it from a LIVECD which is of course squashfs03:53
caryjebus>_<03:54
intelikeyskreech ok there your sq errors  the livecd   and if the errors were all squashfs errors then it's either out of ram or cd hickup or something like that.03:54
skreechintelikey: Yeah I got that :)03:54
BluesKajwell folks it's sacktime for me ...long day tomorrow03:54
intelikeyskreech ls -A /path | wc -l03:55

skreechA ok03:55
intelikeyyou can add -R if you want recursive03:55
caryjebuscan someone help me03:56
intelikeyskreech i'm still wondering what this has to do with the origenal Q  "<skreech> HOw much slack does ext3 give to files?"03:56
skreechintelikey: Smells good :)03:56
skreechintelikey: Well I copied them across and they took up about 1GB more than they did on NTFS03:56
caryjebusis there a way to delete my session03:57
skreechI wanted to know if that was a reporting error or would i expect that?03:57
skreechcaryjebus: KDE session?03:57
intelikeyok.  like i said that depends on the "reserved" bit in the fs table....  tune2fs -l /dev/<device>03:57
caryjebusyah03:57
skreechintelikey: Ok grand. Reserved bit = more space I assume03:58
intelikeyprovabably 5%03:58
intelikey   b03:58
intelikeyprobobably  :)03:58
intelikeyand yes all it does is reports used+5% for users but to root only used   and that keeps a user from actually filling the fs.03:59
caryjebus_nvm04:01
intelikeyskreech   it will always have the "Reserved block count: = * "  amount free for root unless root fills it.04:01
intelikeyskreech that answer your Q suficently ?04:02
lopinHello...  Does anyone know how I can get cups working with Vista?04:02
lopinEverything's just kinda going into printer limbo...04:02
intelikey!cups04:03
ubottuPrinting in Ubuntu is done with cups. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Printers - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters - http://linuxprinting.org - Printer sharing: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NetworkPrintingFromWindows04:03
intelikeylopin last link there ^04:03
* lopin applauds...04:03
lopin<sarcasm>Yep, definitely didn't try that!</sarcasm>04:04
jhutchins vista is not compatible with networks or other operating systems.04:05
intelikeyheh04:05
jhutchinsNot compatible with PC hardware either.04:05
intelikeyvesta is not compatable04:05
lopinI had to laugh at that, but it's not helping me right now...  ^.^04:05
jhutchinsIt's interface is not compatible with humans...04:05
lopinIt's installed the printer, and it acts like it's printing...  But then...  Nothing...04:06
jhutchinsWe had one guy who held out for almost six months before he ditched it and went back to xp.04:06
lopinWould I be able to print if I shared it over samba?  And if I could, how do I set up a samba share?  Samba's always confused the crap out of me...04:06
lopinAnd, it's a friends computer, and I can't move them back to XP...04:06
skreechintelikey: ok I think my math is off04:07
jhutchinslopin: well, that would have been the default way to serve it to windows.  Assuming that the vista cups compatibility isn't compatible...04:07
lopinBut, they are dual booting Ubuntu, but it's installed through Wubi, and they think that it's kinda odd that it won't hibernate, and then the wireless card gets all hot...04:07
lopinI installed it with ipp, but it's just sitting there...04:07
* intelikey thinks one could always accidently do a cat /dev/zero > /dev/hda on the windows box....04:07
skreechintelikey: ls -AR | wc -l on ext3 = 8562504:07
lopinLike, I have the page open, and I hit print test page, and it works instantly...04:08
skreechintelikey: ls -AR | wc -l on ntfs = 8856804:08
intelikeyskreech there were other inodes on the ext3 already ?04:08
lopinThen, when I print something in firefox, it just sits there, and IE doesn't even give me a print button...04:09
skreechintelikey: ls -AR | wc -l on ext3/windows = 19844 (last dir copied and I'm rm it anyway)04:09
skreechintelikey: ls -AR | wc -l on NTFS\windows = 2282804:09
skreechintelikey: what's the diff between the two numbers04:09
intelikeyyeah you got toasted by a full ram or something.04:09
skreechor the diff between the diff of the two discrepancies :)04:09
skreechI'm missing more files in a single dir than I am missing files in total04:10

flaccideagles051387: take out all interfaces except localhost from /etc/network/interfaces and then use knetworkmanager. if its wired ethernet you can test manually calling dhcp with sudo dhclient eth0 after killing existing dhclient processess08:06

Trevelyan`If anyone is interested this explains what is wrong with ubuntu 8.04 initrd that causes persistent to fail: http://paste.debian.net/6374/. you may want to post it somewhere or file it against a bug13:27
Rioting_pacifistDont think any devs hang out here, sticking it on launchpad is more likely to get the attention it needs13:29
eagles0513875Trevelyan`: u talking bout getting kubuntu on a usb pen drive13:29

Trevelyan`i'm not really an *ubuntu user, i just created a pen for someone else, and i'm unlike to use a bugs account again. i figured someone here would have such an account13:32

huieRioting_pacifist: using what?13:47
llutzhuie: use what you want, but not KDE :)13:47
Rioting_pacifistprograms tend to eat all the ram they can get, but if theres no ram to eat they should be fine13:47

huieshould I run the last LTS?13:48
sonoftheclayrhuie: You can always download the alternate install instead if you don't have enough RAM13:48
huiesonoftheclayr: It has the dubious honour of needing more RAM to install than it does to run13:48
huiesonoftheclayr: That needs more RAM than I have13:49
huieIt freezes on the 4th screen13:49

sonoftheclayrThe alternate install is just text only13:49
huiesonoftheclayr: I just said that it needs more RAM than I have13:49
Rioting_pacifistllutz: kde has about the same usage as all the other major enviroments (XFCE & gnome) and tbh once you start running programs kickers footprint is insignificant13:50

geniigonzaloaf: Aside from the compiz package you will probably also like:  compizconfig-settings-manager and kde-window-decorator packages.  After all is done installing, switch to compiz by: alt-f2  compiz --replace16:35
FirefisheConundrum_:  I did my <sudo apt-get update> then <sudo apt-get upgrade>.  After this, I did the <sudo apt-get dist-upgrade> and received the following ouput:  http://rafb.net/p/9MBDS266.html16:36
gonzaloafConundrum_, I mean, I've already installed them, now how do I enable the effects?16:36
geniigonzaloaf: You can configure the look and feel of it with the compizconfig-settings-manager which is called ccsm for short when running it16:36
gonzaloafgenii, I cant find the kde-window-decorator pkgs16:37
geniigonzaloaf: compiz-kde16:38
geniigonzaloaf: That is the package name. The kde-window-decorator is the name of the program in it, which allows you to use the theme or so on you already are using without compiz16:39
gonzaloafgenii, and if something goes wrong, how do I go back to my current configuration?16:39

michael__Riddell: ill give it a go23:24
tekgeekltthat is just a kde theme I think .. you download it and then go into system settings > appearance there under colors you can import your theme23:24
tekgeekltI did mine to an all grey look which I like23:24
michael__yes i know about the theme (or maybe i have no idea) but you see how the panel is smaller and well...cool, thats wut i want23:26
sharpe_ukyou can do stuff like that with any version of KDE, http://www.noirlorduk.karoo.net/mydesktops1.png thats my setup23:27
tekgeekltthe you mean the taskbar?23:27
sharpe_ukI tend not to use the themes from kde-look because some of them can be *very* resource intensive (depending of course on the theme)23:27
michael__im sorry ive been using gnome for 3 yrs bear wit me23:28
michael__im trying to find another picture cuz i obviously have no idea what im talkin about23:29
tekgeekltif you right click on the taskbar it will take you to the settings that allows you to change size and transparancy and placement23:30
michael__when i right click it says panel settings with few options (im on kde4)23:31
sharpe_ukplayed with KDE4, was impressed but stuck with 3, alot of the good stuff at the moment is under the hood, it'll be a while till the end user gets all the good stuff23:32
