Skyline969Could someone please help me with an issue I have?01:48
Skyline969My installer for Xubuntu has been running for roughly an hour now (Alternate Install CD) and so far it's stuck on something about configuring the generic Linux image.01:49
Skyline969It's been frozen on that one for roughly 30-40 minutes.01:49
Skyline969The CPU light keeps going, signaling that it IS doing something.01:49
Skyline969The hashes on the ISO matched and I checked the CD integrity - is was good.01:50
Skyline969Still, should it take this long? And if not, what should I do?01:50
gaurdroWhat type of system is it and what type of disk did you burn the image to?01:52
litlebudaSkyline969, you there ?02:06
Skyline969Sorry, I am now.02:09
Skyline969I burned it to a Memorex CD-R, and the system is a 32-bit 386.02:09
Skyline969128 MB RAM, and roughly a 300 MHz processor.02:10
Skyline969It handled the Live CD installation of Ubuntu perfectly, but I put in a new hard drive.02:10
Skyline969I decided to have even more power, so I got the ISO for Xubuntu.02:10
Skyline969And yes, it's STILL at that part.02:11

gaurdroyou may have to restart the install.  make sure the disk is visibly clean,  when it checks the disk it reads linearly through the data at a fairly low speed but while installing it reads much faster.  j02:12
gaurdroand if it worked with the livecd you might just go back to that.  the alternate cd really only supports more hardware, but doesn't give you much more control of the system02:13

Persi_well yeah that way I can connect to a wifi network16:19
Persi_but this is 1st step16:19

JannoTT56% hope it's way faster then gnome.22:08
karlukkenHola22:31
karlukkenHi22:32
karlukkenNo puedo cambiar la resolución de la pantalla de inicio22:32
karlukkenI can't change my login screen resolution22:32
karlukken¿Cómo lo hago?22:33
karlukkenHow can I do it?22:33
karlukkenHi22:35
nikolamhi22:35
karlukkenCan you help me? I can't change my Xubuntu login screen resolution22:35
karlukkenI tried editing xorg.conf, but it's different from the previous versions22:36
nikolami were facing the same problem myself22:37
karlukkenI googled the problem, but all solutions I found rely on changing xorg.conf22:38
karlukkenAha...22:38
nikolamI think that only solution is to stick to the resolution it is offering and that suppose to be the first one mentioned on xorg.conf in resolution line22:38
karlukkenBut my xorg.conf doesn't have a resolution line22:39
karlukkenIt's like this:22:39
karlukken# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)22:40
karlukken#22:40
karlukken# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using22:40
karlukken# values from the debconf database.22:40
karlukken#22:40
karlukken# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.22:40
nikolamMine neather. But somehow I managed to get it with something like sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg22:40
nikolamand then edit it22:40
JannoTT1minute remaining and there will be new xubuntu user. Hope everything goes well.22:41
nikolamif i remember corectly i booted with vesa and i used to use some automated window that start on gdm start failure22:41
nikolamI will put my xorg.conf on pastebin if any help22:41
nikolamypu can then copy/paste portions that reffer to you22:42
nikolamHere is my xorg.conf : http://paste.ubuntu.com/19994/22:42
nikolamJannoTT, Go for it! :)22:43
JannoTTit's here! time to burn it and install it.22:43
karlukkenHow did you do that? I mean, pasting your xorg.conf there...22:44
nikolamkarlukken, Look at the Modes Line, i think that first mode in that line will be the one taht gdm uses to display login screen22:44
nikolamwennt to http://paste.ubuntu.com/ , insert your username on irc, and copy/paste text you want, And voila. :)22:45
karlukkenAlright, did it. Look at my xorg, conf, it doesn't have a modes line: http://paste.ubuntu.com/19997/22:46
nikolamof course, mine looked the same upon graphics driver install22:46
nikolamThat suppose to be default on new X.org server22:47
tingle_hello, i would like to try xubuntu as desktop os but im not sure what version to pick i would like to have a stable version22:47
nikolamBut I couldn`t remember quite how i managed to have modelines in it. I think that automatic program that start in Vga mode when it detected my gdm is crashing, promted me to select driver&monitor and made them for me22:48
TheSheepyou are supposed to use displayconfig-gtk now22:48
karlukkenAlright, let me try that, TheSheep...22:48
nikolamtingle_, It depends on your machine/memory bu generally i recommend i386 or amd64 alternate xubuntu install cd22:49
karlukkenTo tingle: First, you have to know if your machine is i386, AMD64, powerPC...22:49
Ven]1doesnt xubuntu use xinitrc?22:49
tingle_nikolam: thanks but thats not really what i ment when i go to xubuntu/download i can choose different releases22:51
nikolamTheSheep, tingle_ Just use 8.04 That is LTS(Long Term Service) Version that will be supported 5+years on desktop22:53
karlukkenThe latest stable version is 8.04, Hardy Heron22:53
karlukkenI think that's what you need22:53
tingle_karlukken: ok ill try it thanks22:53
nikolamSorry I wanted tingle_ :)22:53
tingle_nikolam: np :)22:54
tingle_going to switch now bb and thanks22:54
karlukkenWell, regards the resolution problem... It seems I am using a generic driver. I'm going to Windows to find out which graphic card I have, so I can tell displayconfig-gtk22:55
karlukkenGood luck, nikolam22:55
karlukkenI might be back...22:55
nikolamlike terminator, huh :)22:55
karlukkenHa ha22:56
nikolamT-90022:56
Ven]1can i just put stuff into /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc for them to autorun?22:56
nikolamVen]1, You have Settings>Settings manager>Autostarted apps   for that :)22:58
Ven]1not apps.. commands22:59
Ven]1can i just put in commands into rc.local?23:00
nikolamapp=command23:01
Ven]1true23:01
Ven]1brb23:01
TsrwedgeI'm attempting to use Xfce, but it seems to hang after the login screen.  Does anyone have any pointers on where to look for possible solutions?  I tried googling "xubuntu hangs after login" and variants, as well as browsing the ubuntu forums, but was unable to find anything relevant.23:06
RiottaTsrwedge: my generic question you got ati ?23:10

TsrwedgeNot as far as I know23:13
Tsrwedgeabout 99% sure it's just metacity, but this is in GNOME23:13
Riottawell I really don't know I used to install xubuntu-desktop myself on ubuntu machines and it worked23:14
TsrwedgeI've never had a successful boot into Xfce23:14
Riottaxfce isn't really a problematic window manager gnome has more flaws tbh23:14
Riottahmm23:14
Riottamaybe your installation of packages where corrupted or something23:14
Riottamaybe it's some not linux based fault23:15
TsrwedgeI've removed, cleaned, redownloaded, reinstalled several times23:15
djouallahjust a word, thanks for xubuntu and wubi ;)23:15

JannoTTnow let's see what xubuntu offers23:33
BrokunnCan I ask questions right here?  <--noob23:38
JannoTTmaybe23:40
JannoTTofcoors u can... c(:23:40
Brokunn@.@  Excellent23:41
BrokunnI'm trying to install Xubuntu on a Dell Latitude L400 using the alternate CD (since I only have 128 Mb of RAM).  It keeps failing at the same spot in the installation...23:42
BrokunnI verified the CD, my RAM, and I use to run Win 2k on the laptop just fine, so I dont think it's hardware.23:42
BrokunnAny thoughts/suggestions?23:46
JannoTTi know nothing. :D installed xubuntu 20minutes ago first time ever. :D23:49
BrokunnWell, you got farther than I did ;)23:50
