sharpe_ukwhere do I change the mime type associated with an application in kubuntu?00:00
sharpe_ukits decided that konqueror should open deb files (this is not what I want!)00:00
Malicstupid question: how can i zoom in a video with kaffeine?00:00
jhutchins_wksharpe_uk: Right click or shift-right-click on a local file, choose open with and check remember.00:01
sharpe_ukah easy as that, what about global configuration?00:02
sharpe_ukor if I dont want it to open with anything, I just want it to download..00:02
jd_sharpe_uk: that depends on your web browser/download manager00:03
sharpe_ukkonq00:03
jd_on konq go to settings->configure->file associations00:05
jd_search for deb and drop down the application and click on x-deb00:06
sharpe_ukah excellent, thanks :)00:07
sharpe_ukbeen using KDE years first time Ive run into that one00:07

DJG9282Hi guys...for some reason i can do dial-up and it connects from the Live CD, but when i do it from any three of the users (admin or not), it will connect, but i cannot view any web pages any ideas?00:08
DJG9282I installed Firestarter and Guarddog before...and i thought maybe that was preventing it so i uninstalled them...but still no luck with it00:08
ougshow do i start wireless interface from rescue mode (no X)00:10
DJG9282Here's a little bit more info: About three days ago i could not get the KPPP program to even start under other profiles except for the first user profile. When i started the dialup through first user and went to a website...it allowed me. But i couldn't even get access to KPPP on the other profiles. So i reinstalled KPPP and that solved the problem of not allowing other profile users to use it...but now even though it00:11
DJG9282dials and connects...the email program, web browser, chat program all say that it cannot find the server and to check connection00:11
DJG9282ok i just noticed....web browser doesnt notice the connection either...even though the Live CD00:14

engineerdid you have an open session before?00:30
wimpiesengineer : no I just rebooted and I also closed that terminal session I could do sudo -i in00:31
DJG9282Anyone have any suggestions of why my dial-up connection will successfully connect, but web browsers, email clients etc. will not recognize the connection?00:31

Agent_bobwhat's the minimum ram required for a ubuntu server ?00:40
Agent_bobwould 16m be enough ???     http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=df7e4d7700:42
ubuntu_16mb00:42
Agent_bobyeah ?00:42
ubuntu_wow00:42
Agent_bobthis box i'm chatting on is a little heavier than that  http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d2f592cd100:43
Agent_bobso i'm wondering if it's because there is more avalable that more is used ?00:44
adz21cHi, is it possible to sync kaddressbook with google contacts? (i am thinking imap since i got kmail using that, I tried imap via kmail but I dunno if I am setting it up right or what but it seems to do nothing and i can't add contacts using it either)00:44
DJG9282could a firewall be blocking access to webpages or email through the dial up connection?00:50
Agent_bobwaoh ff eats 21m of ram just launching itself00:50
Agent_bobthat's what firewalls do  yes00:50
DJG9282Agent_bob: what can i do to turn it off...i installed firestarter and then i uninstalled it because i couldn't get to web pages...now i think it kept whatever setting it setup00:51
ralf_it depends, doesnt it? If port 80 is blocked, there is no connection possible to web pages i think00:51
DJG9282Any ideas if i can find out what ports are being blocked?00:51
Agent_bobralf_ or if a specific ip is blocked or if a specific interface is blocked or if any combination of those is used.00:52
DJG9282My dial-up connects to the internet but thunderbird and firefox doesn't recognize it00:52
Agent_bobDJG9282 can you get to google in ff using the ip 64.233.167.99 ?00:52
Agent_bobif so it's a dns issue00:53
DJG9282ok right now i don't have firefox on this one because i am using the Live CD because on the harddrive it won't even allow me to connect to Konversation00:53
Agent_bobok what about konqueror   can it get out ?00:54
ralf_to find it out you just need to check ping www.google.com00:54
DJG9282I get "Could not connect to host http://64.233.167.99" in Konqer00:54
DJG9282when i do the ping command it works00:55
DJG9282but no luck through the browser00:55
Agent_bobok.  sounds like it's firewalled or ip/port not forwarded   what do you have between you and the world ?00:55
Agent_bobwait  is that bug in the liveCD ?00:56
DJG9282thats a good question...like i said i installed firestarter....didn't really like it so i installed guarddog after uninstalling firestarter...but then i couldn't connect to web pages when i got home through the dial up so i installed guarddog00:56
Agent_bobcheck the bug reports on that issue00:56
DJG9282no its not because i cannot even connect to anything at ALL on the profiles on the hard drive00:56
DJG9282Live CD is a plus...i can at least chat about this problem haha00:56
Agent_bobbut i think there is a bug in the live CD     iirc  so that might explian the issue there.    now as to the installed system if you lockdown the box you'll have to unlock it to get out  ;/00:58
DJG9282how do i do that?00:58
DJG9282i never did lock it down...unless i did it without knowing what i was doing00:58
DJG9282but i literally just went into the firewall and changed nothing00:58
DJG9282then uninstalled00:58
Agent_bobDJG9282 run the firewall frontend you have installed and configure it to allow access to the world ?00:58
ralf_hm, and when you just diable it?00:59
DJG9282i didn't disable it...i uninstalled it00:59
DJG9282frontend? not familiar with that one00:59
Agent_bobremoving the frontend does not remove firewall capabilities from the kernel00:59
DJG9282ok what do i have to do to manually get rid of whatever is blocking01:00
ralf_i would try to install it again and then to disable the firewall befor uninstalling it01:00
Agent_bobfrontend : any program that affords user friendly access to another less friendly application01:00
DJG9282i think the firewall was configured for my wireless and blocked every other Ip access thats outgoing through dial-up....i just don't know how to fix the problem01:01
Agent_bobsudo iptables -F01:01
=== mlee is now known as incense

Agent_bobralf_ !i01:03
DJG9282ok i'm going to try that thanks01:03
Agent_bobDJG9282 you can use sudo iptables -L    to list them01:04
Agent_bobhttp://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d74cf8959  <<< there's the firewall settings for this box :)))01:05
ralf_no ideas about the sound system problem?01:06
Agent_bobralf_ not me, i always just power off,  never suspend01:07
ralf_Agent_bob: yes on a desktop pc me too  but on my notebook i use it very often, though i am not able to here any sounds after wake it up01:09

sharpe_uk>flaccid, its not flash at fault this time (since it works just fine under firefox) its down to the way nspluginviewer handles things12:09

sharpe_ukindeed however it does show that the shared library object is working and if it works for firefox and not for konqueror on the same site then you have to start looking at konqueror as the problem (have to start somewhere)12:12

aenigmaAnybody want to help me with an issue I am having with kubuntu?21:23
Telroth|Sleepaenigma, just post the problem/question21:24
gocKehi everyone21:24
aenigmaAlright, I have been trying to get wol and suspend working right on my computer and last night I put another network card in it to see if it would work. It didn't so I went back to the onboard network card and had some /etc/hosts issues with sudo not resolving hostname, I got that fixed but now when I shutdown it hangs when trying to shutdown alsa.21:25
aenigmaIt says "WARNING: invoke-rc.d called during shutdown sequence" and it will just scroll that over and over until I shut the computer off.21:26
Telroth|Sleepaenigma, what system changes have been made recently?21:27
aenigmaThe weird thing is that I removed alsa and alsa-utils with apt-get remove --purge and it would go to suspend after booting21:27
aenigmawell swapping network cards was the main system change, and it started as soon as I went back to my built-in ethernet card21:28
aenigmaoh and it will also hang trying to shutdown alsa when I startup, it is baffling21:30
aenigmaThe only way to boot up is by using recovery and selecting resume, so apparently recovery is skipping some script that usually starts21:31
aenigmaI was thinking it was alsa-utils script because when I invoke it with ./etc/rc2.d/S50alsa-utils it will do the same thing, but removing it just gave me the problem with the computer going into standby while loading kubuntu.21:33
crimsunaenigma: you don't really need alsa-utils's udev script invoked if you don't mind ALSA state not being (re)stored.21:34
crimsunaenigma: i.e., if you use PulseAudio and/or kmix, restoration is done automatically.21:34
monk3yanyone have an idea when i try to "add a new key" to Wine in registry editor, it says "Invalid Handle"?21:35
monk3ytrying to configure WoW21:35
aenigmaWell I did remove alsa completely, and it just introduced another problem altogether.21:35
aenigmaso I guess alsa isn't really the problem, which is what is confusing me21:36
tristan_!adeptfix21:36
ubottuIf an APT front-end crashed and your database is locked, try this in a !terminal: « sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a »21:36
crimsunaenigma: well, the problem is that it's not altogether clear to a casual user what package contains what.21:36
aenigmayeah, but I fail to see who alsa has anything to do with suspend21:37
crimsunfor instance, alsa-utils contains the udev rule, and alsa-base contains the suspend script.21:37
aenigmahmmm21:38
crimsunI'm thinking we probably just need to drop multiuser /and/ default semantics for the initscript21:38
aenigmahow would I do that?21:40
crimsunthe only time it really makes sense to restore is pre-desktop, and the only time it really makes sense to store is pre-shutdown/reboot/suspend21:40
crimsunaenigma: sorry, I'm just thinking aloud.  I maintained the ALSA bits for a longish time.21:40

jalshey this is a silly little issue, but my "system settings" button has disappeared in the K menu and been replaced by a "system settings" menu item which expands with the options, anyway to revert that?22:41
vamsiHi there. I have a quick question. I just downloaded a small program. In order to run it, I had to chmod the .sh file and run it from konsole as ./filename.sh and it works. how do I put this in the k-menu?22:41
schumbilovre: hm i run winecfg but there is sadly no way to configure it22:42
lovrevamsi: right click the k-menu and select menu editor22:42
lovrevamsi: there you can configure stuff22:42
lovreschumbi: how do i install all windows fonts?22:42
vamsilovre: i was there. at the place where it says 'command', what do i enter?22:43
Sadris there a feature in Kubuntu that shows you your available memory? like, if it's close to an override... TuneUp for windows had this useful feature22:43
lovreenter /full/path/to/script.sh22:43
lovreSadr: free22:43
lovreSadr: free -m22:43
vamsilovre: oh. I was putting the full path in the Work Path area22:43

=== Pici` is now known as Pici
Rioting_pacifistjals: its wierd because the AFAIK the 2 are controlled by completly different settings, the menu is controlled by panel settings and unless thats done something clever, the menu entry is seperatly controlled by k menu editor22:50
jussi01cara: try asking in #kubuntu-kde422:51
jalsok i can happily readd the system settings option: what would be the command for it?22:51
jalssystemsettings doesn't seem to do it22:51

Rioting_pacifisttry running kcontrol that might be the default one22:54
