TeslanautCan anyone help me? I'm trying to configure xubuntu Hardy Heron on my uncle's Gateway MX322501:20
jmhealeyhell all02:25
jmhealeyhell o al02:25
jmhealeyhe lloall02:25
jmhealeydammit hello all02:25
Gabe_G23Hey everyone, I'm having a problem with my computer's resolution, it is currently 1280 x 800, and I want it to be 1280 x 768, can anyone help?02:44
jmhealeyhello02:51
jmhealeywhat distro are you running?02:51
Gabe_G23Xubuntu02:51
jmhealeyi would rerun x configurator, let me find the actual command02:53
jmhealeyquestion: are you certain your monitor and vid card support that resolution?02:53
Gabe_G23Not sure, is there anyway I can check? I'm new to Xubuntu02:54
Gabe_G23I've tried the ubuntuforum, they told me to run a command, but my resolution was not on the lits.02:54
Gabe_G23list*02:54
jmhealeysudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg02:54
jmhealeyrun through that, and put and X in the box for that resolution02:54
Gabe_G231280 x 768?02:55
jmhealeyyes02:55
jmhealeydo you know how to ctrl-alt-F1?02:55
Gabe_G23Yes.02:55
Gabe_G23I've used Ubuntu before. Just not Xubuntu02:55
jmhealeyok.  ctrl-alt-f1, then sudo /etc/inet.d/gmd stop02:56
Gabe_G23What will that do?02:56
jmhealeythen run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg   to reconfigure your X-org server02:56
Gabe_G23Okay, so from what I can tell02:57
jmhealeyoops, i made a mistake above, the command is /etc/inet.d/gdm stop   !!!02:57
Gabe_G23sudo /etc/inet.d/gmd stop will stop X-org, sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg will reconfigure it.02:57
jmhealeyyes, but fix my gmd mistype, service is gdm, not gmd, sorry02:58
Gabe_G23and not sudo?02:58
jmhealeyyou are right, you want to kill gdm  then run the reconfigure02:58
jmhealeyno, you'll have to sudo02:58
jmhealeyxubuntu rocks, by the way, i just switched from gnome02:59
jmhealeyits worth 'fixin'02:59
Gabe_G23:)02:59
jmhealeyhey, what problem is the res difference causing?02:59
Gabe_G23I just can't see the screen03:00
Gabe_G23The top03:00
Gabe_G23Just a little bit03:00
jmhealeywhat if you hit the auto configure on your monitor?03:00
Gabe_G23?03:00
jmhealeyevery monitor i've seen lately has a setting to 'auto center' the screen03:01
Gabe_G23This computer is pretty old. :|03:01
jmhealeyok. is it a CRT?03:01
jmhealeyold stuff is a great match for xubuntu or puppy linux or DSL03:02
jmhealeythanks to linux, old hardware always has value : )03:02
Gabe_G23CRT?03:03
jmhealeycathode ray tube, the old monitor, not a flat panel03:05
Gabe_G23It's widescreen, it's PRETTY new, but not new enough to have an auto-center.03:06
DILhey all03:08
DILi have a linksys pcmcia card but no internet connection i dont see an network manger icon anywhere03:10
* DIL this joint is jumpin03:11
jmhealeydo you have a good wired connection?03:11
jmhealeyDIL;  install wicd from sourceforge03:16
jmhealeywicd works the best for network management, IMO03:16
DILno unfortunately it is an old machine trying a rj45 pcmcia card now03:17
jmhealeyyou could probably download a .deb and put it on a flash drive or something.03:17
DILwhat would i download? wicd03:17
jmhealeyare you on xubuntu03:19
DILthis connection is ubuntu03:19
DILitried a usb linksys rausbo and system freezes it does not see the other linksys card pcmcia03:20
DILso i would need a solution for the bmc4318 drivers03:21
jmhealeysounds like ndiswrapper03:23
jmhealeyi set that up a few years ago, not since.  are you familiar with it03:23
Gabe_G23jmhealey: I'm back.03:23
Gabe_G23jmhealey: When I chose 1280 x 768 it stayed at a black screen.03:23
Gabe_G23[22:01]<jmhealey>every monitor i've seen lately has a setting to 'auto center' the screen03:24
Gabe_G23Where is this setting?03:24
DILyes but hated messing with it after a couple upgardes i had to reconfigure so went out and got a net gear card - i have this old computerr and dont want to throe away a $50.00 card03:24
jmhealeyGabe_G23: the 'auto center' if it has it is in a different place in the monitor menu for eveyr monitor i've seen, it seems03:29
jmhealeypush some monitor buttons and see what happens03:29
jmhealeyDIL how old it is03:30
DILit is a gateway solo 9000 it looks like i have to get my googlefu on03:31
jmhealeyyeah google knows all03:44
jmhealeyDIL, have you tried puppy linux?  I know a guy who swears by it for the oldies hardware03:45
DILyea i think it runs on ram03:46
DILi think i have a solution though thanks for your assitsance03:46

GnuSenseHardy  xubuntu seems quite nice but there doesn't seem to be any way to browse for samba shares from Thunar, or am I missing something?  What do folks use, Linneighborhood?09:38
MyrttiGnuSense: I'm old fashioned, I know what I want to use over samba, and mount it sith smbfs.09:40
GnuSenseI can do that, too, I certainly mount my normal server shares with fstab and can figure out how to mount with mount, but sometimes its nice to have a GUI, too.  Is there a xfce equivalent to browsing with SSH like the fish:// stuff in KDE, etc.?09:42
GnuSenseAlso, it seems like a couple of hundred MB of open-office stuff are installed in xubuntu, which is odd, considering that OO itself is nowhere to be found.  Will I hose my system if I whack that stuff?09:51

clementishello, I tried to install all necessery packages for dvdrip. cdrecord. cdrdao and, mkisofs are not included in the official repository of xubuntu. Instead of cdrecord wodim is used in Hardy. Could I use this cdrecord fork instead? Where do I get the other packages? Any alternatives?12:59
=== tuna-fish is now known as tuna
David-Aclementis: wodim tries to be compatible with cdrecord. When I converted from cdre.. to wod.. I had to change my scripts in a few places. Not much trouble.13:01

vinnlPaladine, Applications->Settings->Workspaces settings14:58

vinnlPaladine, not an applet, just an application to change the number of workspaces14:59
vinnlPaladine, unless you're using Compiz?14:59
Paladineyeah can you tell me the name of the binary14:59

Paladineseems to be working ok here, hasn't crashed yet15:20
vinnlNot if Compiz is running ^.^15:20
Paladinethere is a graphical anamology on the shutdown button when the dock updates (app opens or closes) which causes a white block to flash up but it is bearable15:20
TheSheepPaladine: it's not about crashing, it's about not being able to swicth between workspaces15:20
Paladineworkspace switching was fine15:21
Paladinealthough I just reduced workspaces to 1 since I have 1920x1200 screen15:21
Paladinebut I did test the workspace switcher applet beofre I did that and it worked fine15:21
TheSheepI mean switching to an app on a different workspace with the icons15:22
TheSheepnevermind, if it works for you, it's great15:22
PaladineI never tried that, but I was able to put focus onto the apps I had on this workspace by clicking on them in the switcher15:22
TheSheepvinnl: btw, awn doesn't require compiz on xubuntu15:22
vinnlTheSheep, no, just a compositing manager, right?15:22
TheSheepvinnl: but xfwm4 does compositing, so it's ok15:23
vinnlTheSheep, but he (or she? Paladine?) mentioned he/she was running Compiz :)15:23

vinnlJDLSpeedy, perhaps you could give the alternate installer a try17:03
JDLSpeedyvinnl: i'll try that, thanks17:04
Valsumyup, I think that with 500 Mhz best option is to install with alternate CD. You won't face any problems running Xubuntu later.17:04

JDLSpeedybeen at 3% for about 5 minutes now, so my guessing it stopped17:05

szemyi was triing to set up some users with restricted bash aka rbash, but ended up typing sudo rbash19:44
szemyso now i cant even log in beacause it says no permission to cd /home19:44
szemythe /ect/passwd lists me as a bash user19:44
szemyanyone idea?19:45

szemybut i cannot log in19:50
szemyyou mean before that19:50
szemy?19:50

David-Aszemy: are you still in sudo rbash? it is not in a terminal window in a gui desktop but a consol login?19:57
szemyi tried to restart the computer19:57
szemysomehow it got stuck in rbash19:57
David-Adid you arrive to a login screen?19:58
szemyyes19:59
szemybut it already fails to load some klog or whatever due to permissions...19:59
szemyii can start it up in recovery mode or whatever its name is20:01
David-Aor fail safe mode in the session menu in the login screen20:02
szemyyes that works20:02
szemybut what next?20:02
David-Adid you change the shell for your normal login? you say /ect/passwd looks ok?20:03
szemyyes it does20:03
David-Acan you see where the "sudo rbash" you typed ended up? was it in a settings gui or on the command line?20:05
szemyit was command line20:06
David-Aas an argument to a command line settings command or directly at the command line prompt?20:07
szemymy desktop suddeny crashed and than i rebooted20:07
szemyin bash in a x session20:07
szemyif i understand youre question correctly20:08
David-Aif you just typed sudo rbash at the command prompt it should not have any effect now when that shell process is no more.20:09
szemythe two pannels on the top and bottom crashed and the icons on my desktop displayed a red X, so i thought i~d  better reboot it20:09
szemywell that is true20:10
szemy:)20:10
David-Amaybe you did some other changes about the same time?20:11
szemymaybe when i set up user permission for the new users i messed up something20:11
David-Awhat tools did you use to change permissions?20:12
szemyi could try give / recursivly everyone permission to r w and execute20:12
szemybash20:12
David-A"/ recursivly" thats sounds heavy. maybe could make things worse. lets backtrack in small steps.20:13
szemyok20:14
David-Awhat command in bash did you use to change permissions for the new user?20:14
szemychmod20:14
David-Aok. chmod what?20:14
szemywell...20:15
szemychmod -R a  dont remember20:15
szemyi know i changed my home directory so that everyone except me had no permissions whatsoever20:16
szemyor at least that was my intention20:16
David-Acould it be chmod -R <some_rights> <some_directory> where some_directory was NOT /home/<new_user> ?20:17
szemycould be , but i dont think i was that! tired:)20:17
szemyso what if i removed all the permissions with the20:18
szemy=20:19
szemyflag20:19
szemyfrom my home directory20:19
David-Aif you used "sudo chmod ..." or "sudo -s" and "chmod", then sudo says it logs the commands. maybe we can find the log and see what you did?20:19
szemywhere are the logs?20:20
David-Ai dont know yet. man sudo says syslog, which would be /var/log/syslog but i dont find my sudo commands in my syslog so i dont know.20:20
szemythere are only logs from the startup20:23
szemyi found an example of the problem:20:23
David-Amaybe we can use bash command history. did you perform the chmod as your normal user or as root (via sudo or sudo -s)?20:24
szemyopen /var/run/avahi-daemon//pid : Permission denied20:24
szemyi think chmod requires root20:25
David-Achmod can be used by a normal user to change files that the user owns. how did you use chmod?20:26
szemysudo chmod20:26
David-Aok, try "history | grep chmod" (without the "quotes"), then you should see the command.20:27
szemywell thanks20:28
David-Awhat does it say?20:28
szemyi have to reboot couse i use livecd20:28
David-Ano20:28
szemy?20:29
David-Alets do this instead:20:29
David-Afrom a terminal in the live cd you can look at the history on the hard disk.20:29
David-Athe hard disk has a name like /dev/hda2 or /dev/sda3 and may be mounted as /media/hda2 or /disk/sda3 or somthing. can you see anything like that on the desktop or when you issue a "mount" command (without arguments)?20:31
szemythe command you said returns 13 history ...20:31
szemyyes yes20:32
szemyi can access my hd20:32
David-Aso whats it called?20:32
szemyi looked at the syslog but it only containes startup items20:32
szemymnt/hda320:33
David-A(if you look at /var/log/syslog it is only events from the live cd session. if the chmod is in a syslog it is on a syslog on the harddisk. also history command in a live cd session has no history from when you chmod-ed when booted on the harddisk.)20:35
David-A(but we might find them on the harddisk)20:35
David-Acan you do "cd /mnt/hda3/home/<your_name>" ?20:36
szemythe syslog on the hd has only items from a bootup process20:36
szemyyes20:36
szemyin a root shell20:37
David-Adoes "grep chmod .bash_history" say anything?20:37
szemynope20:38
David-Ashize20:38
David-Amaybe if you were root when you did chmod: do "cd /mnt/hda3/root" and "grep chmod .bash_history" ?20:40
szemyyes20:41
szemyman chmod20:41
szemychmod -arR /home/szemy20:42
szemyman chmod20:42
szemychmod a + r -R /home/szemy20:42
David-Ainteresting20:42
szemychmod -R a + r /home/szemy20:43
szemychmod -R a+r /home/szemy20:43
szemylast one:20:43
szemychmod -R a=rwxX /home/20:44
szemythe last ones are already me triing to repaire...20:45

szemy:)20:45
szemyme newbe with root permissions>)20:45
David-Alet me see the man page what capital X is doing...20:46
szemysomething with folders if i remember right20:46
David-Awell, you seem to have given everyone rather liberal permissions to yours and other users files. should not normally cause problems to login. just very exposed to bad users or bad user mode  code.20:50
szemythat was my last chance to repaire things20:50
szemycould be group permissions?20:51
David-Awhat does the perm look like right now? "cd /mnt/hda3/home/szemy" and "ls -l"20:52
szemyrwxrwxrwx20:52
David-Aor maybe "ls -al" and paste back a few representative examples20:53
szemyand for folders + d20:53
David-Aso actually -rwxrwxrwx for normal files20:54
szemy-rwxrwxrwx    1   1000     1000          5136 May 19 05:42  hazi.pdf20:54
David-AI assume 1000 is the first non-root user, which should be szemy, then owner seems ok.20:55
szemythats right20:56
szemyin syslog it even says faild to initialize dbus20:58
szemyi dont no what i did wrong but it seems to me that it was pretty severe20:59
David-Ano, I can not imagine how this cause login problems, but you should restore permissions on your files for safety reasons. we dont know what the perm bits was before, so we may just remove "world" write access for now. ok?21:00

David-Ato restore the last command as root after a normal boot: chmod -R o-w /home/  or from the live cd: chmod -R o-w /mnt/hda3/home/  (you may take notes if you want and do later it when you feel steady at hands)21:05

AkShelli used rhythmbox alot when i was still in ubuntu21:08
szemyi think ill have to reinstall21:09
szemy:(21:09
David-Aszemy: your current group permissions may not be what they originaly was, but i dont think the difference matters much, functional-wise or safety-wise.21:10
szemynot safety but startupwise?21:10
David-Aszemy: normally a program complains if permissions are to low. do you think a program will look at permissions lf they allow to much and complain then? it can do what it want and chould work, right?21:13
szemyyes but:21:14
szemyfrom syslog21:14
szemy:21:14
szemyFound user avahi (uid 108) and group avahi (gid 117)21:15
szemysuccessfully dropped root privileges21:15
David-Aszemy: if you want to mimic my group permissions on home: (live cd) chmod g-w /mnt/hda3/home (or booted) chmod g-w /home21:15
szemyopen(/var/run/avahi//pid):permission denied21:16
szemybefore me messing up, avahi started fine...21:16
szemydont know what it is for, but it did21:16
David-Aare you booted or live cd now?21:19
szemylive cd21:20
David-Abut "open(/var/run/avahi//pid):permission denied" was when you was booted?21:20
szemyit is in the syslog and i assume it is after i messed up and tried to reboot21:21
szemysoory i have to go now21:24
szemythank you very much21:24
szemybye21:24
David-AI have a user avahi that runs a process avahi-daemon. there is a file /var/run/avahi-daemon/pid. maybe we can compare permissions even thou the names are not exactly the same?21:24

Chikubui have a dialup modem driver that when i dpkg -i it,  it complies the driver from source, the problem is i have 162 updates that need to be applied... if the update fails as dialup does, sometimes the modem driver is REMOVED!, reinstalling the driver fix it or it won't recompile, the error message is similar to can't find the headers.....how can i IDENTIFY which updates would interfere with compiling the modem driver, or not remove the modem driver and down23:54
PsynoKhi0aestetix on the T60s LCD or external screen?23:55
