eagles0513875frogonwheels: lol i dont need to reboot my whole system tyvm09:05
frogonwheelsflaccid:  ermm.. in kdm .. options restart xserver09:05
flaccidfrogonwheels: thats the one09:05
eagles0513875flaccid: couldnt i just do that command while logged in and restart through cli here09:05
frogonwheelsflaccid:  how else do you get out if the.. ah that's right.. ksmserver  won't respond to events?09:05
flaccideagles0513875: you could, but its not the same09:05
flaccidthey made logout for a reason09:06
frogonwheelsflaccid:  the logout buttons in kdm all send a dbus message to ksmserver - (session management server) that does the actual action.09:06
frogonwheelswhich is rather neat - but not very useful if ksmserver isn't responding. ;)09:07
flaccidfrogonwheels: yes, which is far different to sending the kill 9 signal to all processes09:07
flaccidfrogonwheels: well there is a lot of issues with ksmserver atm and it dies on the sighup for me but it still finishes logging out09:07
* frogonwheels wishes windoze had a c-a-backspace sometimes... or even xkill.09:07
flaccidthis is kde4 however for me, not kde309:08
frogonwheelsflaccid: yeah - it was kde409:08
flaccidfrogonwheels: if you have problems with kde session manager in kde3, you should report a bug09:08
flaccidah this kde3 support channel..09:08
flaccidnp09:08
frogonwheelsflaccid: consider that as an anecdote rather than a problem i need fixed ;)09:09
eagles0513875that didnt work for me09:09
flaccidall problems need fixing09:09
flaccidbbs09:09
eagles0513875kdm never restarted i had to reboot my entire system09:09
ActionParsnipi find kde4 a bit twitchy09:09

ActionParsnipnoaXess: its a small glitch with the display as far as I can see, no massive issue09:16
noaXessActionParsnip: thats why i as her first.. i it is only a problem of my installation, then i won't  report it to mozilla09:16
ActionParsnipnoaXess: cant you go on the website and do it manually?09:17

ActionParsnipflaccid: yeah I saw that too09:24
ActionParsnipnice how its picked up within a day09:24
flaccidalso nice how you can gain control of someones computer09:26
flaccidone advantage of opera is that its Qt and the download manager works, where is it doesn't in firefox09:26
flaccidActionParsnip: problem is : "In addition to Firefox 3.0, the security flaw also affects previous versions of Firefox 2.0x." which means its been there for a long time09:27

curuxzloging as a new user works fine, but their home folder is blank, and the desktop is full of the root directories, like var, etc, home,09:50
curuxzso its as if it reads the / folder as being the desktop folder09:50
flaccidcuruxz: also in ubuntu adduser by default in shell won't add home folder or anything which is why the gui is recommended unless you know the switches for newuser to use or do post-setup of the home folder etc.09:50
ActionParsnipcuruxz: when you run addusr are you setting the home directory?09:50
frogonwheelscuruxz: what's the home diretory in the /etc/passwd ?09:50
flaccidActionParsnip: what was sorry?09:50
ActionParsnipflaccid: connor was painful09:51
flaccidoh yeah lol09:51

ActionParsnipcuruxz: do you set it when its initially made? check the commands in the link09:51
frogonwheelscuruxz: you mean editing /etc/passwd?09:51
curuxzbut...it makes the folder fine, it just does not have the normal subfolders like Desktop09:51
flaccidcuruxz: i would submit a bug09:51

curuxzthanks anyway guys09:53
frogonwheelscuruxz:  when you do   cd ~username/   does it go tho the correct directory?09:53
curuxzyeah09:53
flaccidnp. i've seen kuser and control center create new users fine with home folder and desktop but the showing / contents on desktop could be a bug or intentional if ~/Desktop doesn't exist. no real idea but09:54
ActionParsnipcuruxz: and how about cd ~/; clear; pwd09:54
frogonwheelsok. have nfi where to change the 'Desktop' folder - possibly you could troll the .kde/ files09:54
ActionParsnipcuruxz: does it say /home/username09:54
curuxzyeah09:54
flaccidwouldn't cd ~username/ do cd /home/usernameusername/09:54
ActionParsnipcuruxz: and from there whats the output of file ./Desktop09:55

flaccidhehe10:01
curuxzsorry just testing it10:02
curuxz:)10:02
flaccidcuruxz: if after creating the desktop folder and then logging out and back in, you still get the / contents then please file a bug. the user i saw had ~/Desktop10:02
curuxzokies, im just logging into my new user (using a nx shell to do it while im still logged in)10:02
curuxzyep :( still got the root on the desktop10:04
flaccidinteresting because the user i saw it with was using NX and i saw it through that. um that wasn't you was it?10:04
ActionParsnipflaccid: how can you find out where the desktop is mapped to for the user??10:04
flaccidmapped?10:04
flaccidi think desktop is always $HOME/Desktop afaik10:04
curuxznope this is the first time i have mentioned this! :)10:05
flaccidnp curuxz and have you viewed with display 0 and not NX ?10:05
ActionParsnipflaccid: yeah, the folder containing the desktop items must be referenced in some way to say "use this folder to store desktop gumf: <folder>"10:05
curuxznot yet....worth a shot10:05
flaccidActionParsnip: not sure what you mean10:05
curuxzok ill brb i have to close all this to look dont i :)10:05
flaccidok10:05
ActionParsnipflaccid: the standard is ~/Desktop but im fairly sure its movable, so you could modify a file some place so the folder is elsewhere (and not a symlink)10:06
ActionParsniplike a config file for the user stating where all its stuff is10:06
flaccidhmm i'd be curious to know if thats the case. i guess that would have to be in freedesktop standard somewhere..10:06
OlgemHow do I get knode for KDE PIM? It seems to be existent in the repositories but I'm unable to download it through apt.10:07
flaccidmind you in kde4 its all configurable via FolderView10:07
curuxzok back :)10:08
ActionParsnipgood?10:08
curuxzthe account was 100% fine in normal login10:08
curuxzmust be an NX issue :(10:08
ActionParsnipcuruxz: well its narrowed it down10:08
ActionParsnip:D10:08
curuxzthanks :d10:08
curuxzstill does not solve the issue for me tho since i wanted to use nx! it was so someone else could use my linux machine in my office10:08
flaccidlol that was coincidence..10:08
ActionParsnipwhats NX anyhoo?10:09
curuxzyeah guess it explains why that other guy you met had the same problem! ;)10:09
flaccidwell it doesn't affect the use of NX its just unaesthetic10:09
curuxzNX is like VNC, but much much faster and better10:09
flaccidyeah that dude didn't mind so much heh10:09
ActionParsnipah ok10:09
curuxzwell unfortunately it does, since its giving them root access10:10
rockyrockhi guys10:10
rockyrockI want a help10:10
curuxzand i really really dont want them having that kinda view of the system10:10
flaccidcuruxz: how so?10:10
rockyrockDoes any USB external Dialup modem work on Ubuntu?10:10
curuxzwell it allows them to enter my home folder without passwords10:10
flaccidthats normal10:10
curuxzso, not that i think they would, they can stomp around the whole system10:10
ActionParsnipcuruxz: is NX secure (VNC is not)10:10
curuxzthey can get on the windows drive, which is set only to be allowed by my user10:11
flaccidcuruxz: its normal to be able to do that10:11
rockyrockhello!!! anybody?10:11
curuxzoh i know NX is secure :D, but that still means the person who i only want to allow to use my computer not my files has full access10:11
flaccidyou have to chmod 770 as its 775 by default...10:11
curuxzwhen i have run it in the past they have been separated (tho admitadly that was freeNX not nxserver)10:11
flaccidcuruxz: and i doubt that NX has changed perms or given root at all to users. you can also hide the desktop icons for the aesthetics10:11
flaccidcuruxz: like i said just change the perms on the /home/user folders...10:12
curuxzwont a chmod 770 /home/myname -R screw things up?10:12
curuxzlike with all the session files10:12
flaccidyou don't need to do -R ..10:12

flaccidperfect10:22
flaccidlol10:22
ActionParsnipflaccid: more than compiz ;)10:22
flaccidin this case the loser appears to be firefox and not sun..10:22
frybyehi - anybody know how to get thunderbird to direct html- links in email correctly to the firfox??10:23
flaccidjava is good in opera, but flash is unreliable and bad performance and then overflows to eat up all your cpu..10:23
flaccidfrybye: maybe try other channels that are related like #mozilla and #ubuntu10:24
acemooflaccid: flash is being pretty reliable and good performance here with opera 9.510:25
ActionParsnipfrybye: set your browser up in thunderbird10:25
ActionParsnipflaccid: flash is a major plugin for me due to hammering youtube when im bored10:25
frybyeaction - easily said...?10:26
flaccidacemoo: which opera and flash versions? i mean it loads reliably but then you compare the performance, however this may be my fglrx driver possibly10:26

acemooflaccid: opera 9.5, not sure bout the flash version cant check atm not at home, before i had like when u open flahs in multiple tabs it crashes and was just slower as on firefox, but now with opera 9.5 it seems to be working pretty good10:28
flaccidi've been using 9.5 since it was in snapshot and have always had these problems10:29
frybyeActionParsnip: I am asking in #firefox - perhaps somebody there has an answer...10:29
dbgltopera (on linux) doesn't play too nicely with flash10:29
flaccidyep and the more tabs with flash the more it overflows until you have to kill it!10:29
ActionParsnipfrybye: its a config for thunderbird dude, let me websearch10:29
flaccidsomebody opening lots of redtube tabs10:30

ActionParsnipfrybye: your google skills suck10:31
flacciddbglt: its a site that does videos in flash as well10:31
dbgltflaccid: ah10:31
dbgltopera is best when you confine it to one instance of flash10:31
dbgltI think it's the way the new flash player works... the old one used to be fine with opera :D10:31
flaccidit was decent at one point yes i agree10:32
ActionParsnipits weird how 64bit plugind havent been developed despite 64bit architecture being so widespread now10:33
flaccidyeah i think that if the hardware is available and in the mainstream market the users shouldn't have to then find out the support is half-baked10:34
ActionParsnipwell how long has 64bitness being available to the average joe10:34
ActionParsniplike 8 years or so now10:35
flaccidyep it was hype and still continues to just be hype jumping up here and there10:36
flaccidbecause its not just flash thats the issue10:36
ActionParsniptrue10:36
ActionParsnipbut you can see my point10:36

massi_i've kubuntu and I'have wireless but I'm not able to use it. I just use lan13:36
eagles0513875massi_: if u have another machine connected to what ever you are having issues with if it connected to the wireless router by wire use that to take a look at the ip of the router aka default gateway13:36
eagles0513875massi_: are u on lan through the router that generates the wireless for ya13:36
jhutchinsSeriously, the easiest way is to find a manual for it and look it up.13:36
eagles0513875jhutchins: that as well or he can check what his current default gateway is if he is wired to it in regards to the ip13:37

StFSflaccid: I'm on kubuntu 8.04, and I have installed KDE4 as well but I'm not using that at all16:17
flaccidwhich effects were you using?16:18
StFSflaccid: so, just the KDE packages from the official kubuntu repositories16:18
flaccidin kde316:18
zorglu_ultra naive question, i installed vmware server, all went well... but now how do i launch virtual machine on it ?16:18
flaccidalso are your sessions turned on and is there anything in Autostart?16:18
StFSflaccid: umm... just the ones that were in the menu... (I don't have the K menu in failsafe mode) but it's just called "Desktop Effects" and there's an install button there16:18
StFSflaccid: hmm my sessions turned on?16:19
ravStFS: sounds like compiz was uninstalled while enabled. Happened to me, i reinstalled compiz, and choose 'No Effects' to enable Kwin16:19
flaccidStFS: right, so i would assume compiz is running on startup and that needs to be turned off16:19
StFSrav: hmm... interesting... I'll try that maybe16:19
StFSflaccid: yup... gonna try what rav suggested16:19
StFSbe back in a bit16:19
flacciddesktop-effects-kde4 is experimental and doesn't work very good with compiz fusion16:19

StFSwoohoo... it worked16:25
StFSrav: thanks16:25
StFSflaccid: thanks so much for all your help!16:26
ravStFS: you're welcome16:26
flaccidhey StFS so is your compiz fusion working now or you using kwin ?16:26
StFSflaccid: using kwin16:28
StFSflaccid: never got that compiz desktop effect thingy to work properly16:28
StFSflaccid: or at least, I never noticed any difference16:28
flaccidStFS: yeah it didn't even start lol16:29
flaccidyou have to do compiz --replace16:29
flaccidbut it looks like it was running for you on the startup but no window decorations etc.16:29
StFSflaccid: well no... the problem I had was when I switched back to kwin... so when I was (or at least thought I was) running compiz, everything looked ok (not particularly flashy, but it worked)... but when I removed the desktop effects and went back to kwin everything got borked16:30
flaccidright understood16:31
StFSflaccid: so I think compiz was running for me... but as I said, I just didn't notice anything flashy ;)16:31
flaccidyou have to configure it16:31
flaccidthe window decorations if working would of looked different to kwin/kde16:32
StFSflaccid: yeah, I'm sure I just have to do something "undocumented" to get it working properly... but since this is my work laptop I'm just gonna give up on flashy stuff for now ;)16:32
StFSI have KDE4 and I can play around with that if I want... that's more than enough for me ;)16:32
ravi've only used compiz on kde 3.5.9. I didn't like that it only has 2 desktops, and can't use my Kwin sounds that I'm very fond of.16:33

_2ActionParsnip what does   !`   expand to ?   i just found that i can't put an ! near the end of an `command `23:12
ActionParsnip_2: it just means 'end@ afaik23:13
_2i knew that #! would fall on it's face  but i didn't know that !` would23:13
_2ActionParsnip nope.    test this.    echo "`echo boo !`"23:14
ActionParsnip_2: usually you put it at the start of bash scripts23:14

_2ActionParsnip     test these two.    echo "`echo boo !`" ;echo "`echo boo ! `"  # the second works, the first errors out.   the char combo  !`  means something to bash,  but what?23:17
ActionParsnip_2: bash: !`": event not found23:18
NickPresta_2, using "!" the way you have, invokes the history mechanism. Do this: `ls` Then do: `!l`23:22
ActionParsnip_2: try history23:22
NickPresta_2, you can read about the ! character here: http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/special-chars.html and http://www.deadman.org/bash.html23:22
ActionParsnip_2: the ! some numbr, it will rerun that command23:22
ActionParsnipNickPresta: nice one dude23:22
FoxIIIuhm. I think kubuntu has crashed :( Trying to install amarok but it's just constantly downloading the same file over and over. I've tried stopping it, cleaning it up and trying again, but still doing the same.23:22
ActionParsnipFoxIII: sudo apt-get clean; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get install amarok23:23
ActionParsnipFoxIII: should sort you out, if not head back here23:23

braden_oh cool23:28
ActionParsnip_2: so you dont want a history file?23:28
ActionParsnip_2: the history file is also used when you press up cursor like a DosKey23:28
_2ActionParsnip i didn't say that.  i like uparrow histry just fine.  i just don't like   echo " !"   expanding to anything that i have done with a " in it.23:29

_2;/   or recompile bash again.23:30
_2i already made it fully posix compliant,   now i could turn this "feature" bug off.23:30
_2i use the shell way too much for that to get in my way.    but it's odd that i haven't found it until now.     probably overlooked the cause of syntax errors in the past...23:32
ActionParsnip_2: alias it to do nothing in .bashrc23:34
_2ActionParsnip doesn't help,23:35
_2the shell is expanding it,  it's not being called as a command.  an alias of function would work there   but it's just a shell "special" char23:36
filo1234someone know repos for VB on feisty?23:36
_2echo "boo !"  <<< the only thing that one could alias there is the "echo" command.23:37
