colin__Hi room.  What GUI tools are there to help me configure the connection to a wireless network at boot time - I have KnetworkManager setup, but this only works at user login time.  I  have family members on the one systems and I would rather not expose my key to all users.00:11
frogonwheelscolin__: you should be able to do a manual config for knetworkmanager..00:14

Ash-FoxCrazyPoultry, yep, the issue is that you configured networking outside of knetworkmanager (that application you just closed). So when it thinks you're offline, it tells applications to not use the network etc.03:58
CrazyPoultryAsh-Fox: is there a way to fix that or just deal with it for now?03:58
Ash-FoxCrazyPoultry, if it's a wifi network.. restore the configs to default, start it up again (internet -> knetworkmanager), right click on the icon in the tray - choose your wireless network and it should auto configure the rest03:59
flaccid!pastebin | abhijit03:59

Ash-FoxI don't know.04:03
abhijithttp://paste.ubuntu.com/21556/ hey flaccid se wats wrong in it04:03
Ash-FoxI've only determined he's configured his networking outside of knetworkmanager.04:03
flaccidwouldn't mind seeing because i havnt witness that before04:03
Ash-FoxI've had the issue.04:03
Ash-FoxAlso because I use wvdial for connecting over 3g networks, knetworkmanager gets in the way.04:03
flaccidi've had wep and wpa static in interfaces and knetworkmanager respected it thats all04:04
=== root is now known as Guest88703
flaccidoh04:04
Ash-FoxBut I just made a connection script execute 'dcop kded networkstatus setNetworkStatus NMNetwork 1' once it's connected and 'dcop kded networkstatus setNetworkStatus NMNetwork 0' when it's disconnected.04:04
flaccidabhijit: which device is your sd card or is it not in there?04:04
abhijitits dere... its a class 6 sdhc card04:04
abhijiti can mount it nd access its content04:04
abhijitmanually tho04:05
flaccidabhijit: and what is the /dev ?04:05
flaccidAsh-Fox: hectic!04:05
abhijiti donno.. but dat sdb1 is da card04:06
Ash-Foxflaccid, hey, if knetworkmanager supported dialing my 3g card. I'd be happy with it.04:06
flaccidabhijit: if you uncomment the last line it should work. obviously an sd card is not a cdrom...04:06
flaccidAsh-Fox: i agree. i mean i researched once and there is a lot of completes with the program04:07
flaccid'far from a decent/proper network manager' they say04:07
Ash-FoxOh, I think it's decent for what it does.04:07
flaccidi agree, there are a few caveats. the one i would like to see is ability to export a connection to /etc/network/interfaces to make it on-boot/system instead of user ie. its on the net on boot instead of on login after putting in kwallet password..04:08
abhijitlemme tell u how i mount da card rite now..i use partition editor..nd dere i select my card nd den i use da mount option which says mount on media/cdrom004:09
Ash-FoxI would like the ability to specify IP addresses manually for certain wireless networks04:09
flaccidabhijit: if you take it out of fstab (comment it) then hald will automount it for you. it does not need fstab04:10
Ash-Foxknetworkmanager doesn't provide me that flexibility. So I have to resort to... interesting scripts in /etc/network/interfaces and knetworkmanager randomness.04:10
flaccidAsh-Fox: yep the profiling needs to be better i agree04:10
flaccidit aspects like this that puts kubuntu behind ubuntu/gnome04:10
Ash-FoxI don't use Gnome.04:11
Ash-FoxSo I really wouldn't know.04:11
flaccidneither do i, but its better in this respect thats for sure04:11
flaccidjust need to give the kde devs about 1year i think04:12
guillermo_spainflaccid kde will rely in the dbus interface instead of dcop in the future04:13
abhijiti m unable to make ne change to fstab04:13
flaccidguillermo_spain: yep aware of that :)04:13
flaccidstill interprocess communicatin shouldn't have much to do with this at all :)04:14
guillermo_spainflaccid well I don't know for what do you want ipc, also dbus works as a service outside gui, so probably you will be able to do that, maybe i'm wrong, i'm not a unix hacker :)04:17
abhijithttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=794871 hey flaccid i ve found dis ..see if it can be true04:17

pulaskiHello,  I'm about to upgrade the the new 8.04 hardy heron distribution from my up-to-date 7.10 using Adept Updater.  I know a minimum of 384MB or ram when upgrading from the live CD.  My box is an older Pentium II 450mhz with precisely 384MB of ram.  I would like to proceed with the update.  Can anyone offer any caveats given my the nature of my box?09:01
anethum_ai guess i should just delete that file, huh?09:01

remfarkas:D09:04
oilinkicould this be that the grub is corrupted or something else? what could be a cure for the computer?09:05
pulaskiremfarkas: Thanks for the tip.  let me look for a link with more info on xubuntu.09:05
remfarkasi am not familiar with raid stuff09:05
remfarkasi can so far tell, xfce is a desktop manager which uses a few amount of resources, and based on gnome09:06
remfarkas*is based09:06
pulaskiremfarkas: Thanks.  I have already grabbed xfce and I can choose between sessions of kde or xfce.  I reckon I'll be able to do the same with the distro upgrade eh?09:08
remfarkasprobably u will be able09:08
oilinkishould I just try to boot with a live-cd and do the fsck? I'm quite afraid to loose the data on the disks.09:08
oilinkiI do have backups on another disk for most of the data, but some could not fit on it due lack of disk space on the external drive.09:10

jalsyeah i tried that, everything seems pretty slow though23:29
Odd-rationalejals: yeah, but it is slower than k3b...23:29
jalseven k3b seems kinda slow compared to grip, but i'd prefer to avoid gnome apps23:30
Odd-rationalejals: k3b is the best (for X) there are some console apps that I find interesting such as abcde23:30
jalsheh too much of a n00b for console stuff right now23:30
jalsi'll try k3b again, try and mess with it23:31
Odd-rationalexzvar: i really don't know.... sorry...23:31
Odd-rationalejals: it is pretty simple. once you set the config file, you can rip the cd with one command :)23:31
jalsOdd-rationale, got any guides/tutorials for it?23:32
Odd-rationalejals: sure. one moment...23:32
