junkeRhello everyone, why isn't Kubuntu hardy a LTS release?03:44
duhAnyone know what the kde theme manager package name is?03:45
duhI am not doing to well on search terms03:45
Jucatoduh: KDE 3: Alt+F2, "kcontrol" - Appearance & Themes -> Theme Manager03:47
Jucatounless you meant the *KDM* theme manager, in which case the package name is kdmtheme03:47
JucatojunkeR: it's quite simple: because Canonical said so. it's their "tag" to give or take03:48
junkeRI wonder why they would choose xubuntu over kubuntu... oh well.  I guess you explained it well.  I was wondering if there was an internal struggle or something.03:48
Jucatonope. none at all03:49
duhIt AINT there03:49
duhSo something got biffed up a little03:50
Jucatoduh: which "theme manager" are you looking for?03:50
Jucato(there are 2 kinds)03:50
Jucatoalso, it really won't be in System Settings. it's only in KControl.03:51
duhLike I knew that03:51

duhAnother this I am just supposed to know...03:54
duhUGH!03:54
DragnslcrjunkeR- the explanation that I heard is that KDE 3.5 won't be supported by the KDE team for the years that Kubuntu would need, and KDE4 isn't ready for general usage yet03:55
duhYou are pissing me off, so I'll leave before I get banned03:55

junkeRis that why the support is 2009 instead of 2011 (for desktops)?03:55

engineerhmm03:59
engineermore tweakable03:59
geniiBasically I hate the widget system and no rightclicking so kde3 for me03:59
junkeRI liked the upgraded konqueror though04:00
junkeRat least the little I used of it04:00
DragnslcrKDE 4.1 is supposed to be the first general-use release04:00
geniiHave both and use one or the other as you like. Then you don't have to make some this OR that choice04:01
DragnslcrI tried beta1, and there were a couple annoying things that came right out for me. Customizing the taskbar was horrible04:02
DragnslcrYou can't move items around, you can only remove everything and re-add it in the order you want04:02
_2never mind.   i found it.       did you know that /etc/profile can cause xorg to fail ?04:03

ApplesI know, but isn't there a prefered folder for compiling applications in ?07:12
ApplesYep, sorry, I might not have been that clear about what I was asking07:12
JucatoLinux Filesystem Heirarchy Standard...07:12
Jucatofor personal programs, it doesn't matter much. /usr/local, /opt, or $HOME07:13
ApplesOh ok, thanks I didn't think of looking at the Linux Filesystem Heirachy Standard. I realized that you could compile it anywhere, but I wanted it to be neat, clean and organized haha^^07:16

ApplesOh, I just grabbed a pdf of it off the interbews07:21
ApplesI'll get the link if you want ?07:21
flaccid_sure thanks. still in man hier it doesn't specify..07:21
Jucatoflaccid_: the FHS doesn't care where you *compile* the programs. only where you *install* them to07:21
Appleshttp://www.pathname.com/fhs/07:21
flaccid_Jucato: yes i know, thats my point. the original question was the former..07:21
* Jucato doesn't think that's what Apples meant07:22
flaccid_is it Apples?07:22
ApplesWell I'm just trying compile blender from source, and install it (I know they are different, but I thought runing make install did both)07:23
flaccid_but was your question about where to compile or where to install?07:23
ApplesWell I wasn't compiling my own code, and it was so I could install it07:24
flaccid_um that doesn't really answer the question. is it where to install or where to compile?07:25
Appleswhere to install, it shouldn't matter where I compile it07:25
flaccid_yeah. and the make script should already set that according to hier07:25
* Jucato twiddles thumbs07:25
flaccid_sorry if i take people's questions literally, i work to a science07:25

SilentDisjust curious... is there any way to 'patch' a Kubuntu 8.04 CD/DVD with updated debs?  i want to help a friend install, and don't wanna make them go through the pain of trying to install all the updates (they're on dialup).  would it just be better to hand them an original Kubuntu 8.04 and burn off my local apt repo?07:33
SilentDisor do an apt-on-cd cd or the like?07:33
alucardromeroInstall Kubuntu on a flash drive.07:33
alucardromeroBoot from USB07:33

alucardromeroIn a more broken down sense...07:34
SilentDisthat's an idea... but i'd rather hand them CDs they can keep07:34
SilentDisjust go the apt-cd route then I guess?07:35
ApplessSo extract the file to folder x, run .configure, then make, then make install and then I can deleate the folder and files and the program will be fine ?07:35
alucardromeroInstall Kubuntu yourself on said flash drive (given the flash drive is big enough).07:36
alucardromeroDownload/install updates.07:36

CostaRicanQuakerhow do i go about doing this. first, can i burn the iso file09:08
CostaRicanQuakeronto a cdrw09:08
nuvanyes you can.  I did that not an hour ago09:08
nuvanyou'll need a program such as Nero, PowerISO, or something else that can actually handle burning of ISO images, since windows can't do that itself09:09
nuvanonce it's burned though, you can boot to the disc, and try it out some before making any changes to your computer09:09

nuvando you only have one physical hard drive to work with?09:13
CostaRicanQuakernuvan: yes09:14
nuvanright.  in nero, IIRC, if you open the burning rom app, go to the recorder menu, and choose the "burn image" menu item. that should allow you to select the ISO image and burn it directly to the disc.  no special prep needed for making it bootable, that's done automatically.09:15
nuvanwhen you boot to the ubuntu live CD environment, there will be a shortcut on the desktop to install it.  you can go through that to install, but BE CAREFUL.  if you make the wrong choice, you can nuke your windows data.09:16
CostaRicanQuakernero, IIRC? what's that...i mean i have the program nero an old version09:16
nuvanIIRC = If I Recall Correctly09:17
CostaRicanQuakerok i open nero09:17
nuvanbasically, open the main nero window.  in the menus up at the top, look for one titled "Recorder".  in there, there should be an entry called "burn image"09:17

CostaRicanQuakeri've got several categories, first is data>data disc>bootable disc then copy enitre disc and disc image or saved project09:18
nuvancancel that window.09:19
CostaRicanQuakerhow do you mean? tht's nero...which should i pick?09:20
nuvanwhat's the disc image entry?09:20
CostaRicanQuakerrecord a disc from an image previously saved to the hardrive09:21

CostaRicanQuakeris kubuntu better than ubuntu or they're both the same? what's the dif?10:25
Dr_willis_thus if you use bash specific features..10:25
Dr_willis_CostaRicanQuaker,  kubuntu = ubuntu + kde instead of gnome.10:25
Dr_willis_so its just the desktop 'layer' thats different10:25
CostaRicanQuakerwhat do you mean by feel dr willis?10:25
Dr_willis_Go get a gnome live cd, and a kde live cd. and try them both out.. or just install gnome and kde both on your system. and try each one.10:25
ausageThe only diff is the windowing system... and as Dr_willis said its easy to run both10:26
Dr_willis_Its allthe little differances  in a desktop. :)10:26
Dr_willis_I perfer kde. but some of the gnome configuration tools are better designed.10:26

Dr_willis_insead of start, its got a different looking button, and so forth.. the whole 'windows like' argument is rather pointless. Its not hard to learn gnome, or kde, or windows.10:35
Dr_willis_Screen shots are often made to look 'nice' :)10:35

Walzmynsystem366, you'll probably need to do a full reboot. it usually needs to rebuild kernel modules if it asks for a reboot13:50
stdinyou can logout, and choose to "Restart the X server" from the menu, or just reboot. but reboot is recommended to make sure the kernel sees the new driver13:50

Rioting_pacifistepimeth: whats the difference between sudo -s and sudo -i?19:22
epimethThe -s (shell) option runs the shell specified by the SHELL environment variable if it is set or the shell as specified in passwd(5).19:23
epimeth    The -i (simulate initial login) option runs the shell specified in the passwd(5) entry of the user that the command is being run as. The command name argument given to the shell begins with a `-' to tell the shell to run as a login shell. sudo attempts to change to that user's home directory before running the shell. It also initializes the environment, leaving TERM unchanged, setting HOME, SHELL, USER, LOGNAME, and PATH, and19:23
epimethunsetting all other environment variables. Note that because the shell to use is determined before the sudoers file is parsed, a runas_default setting in sudoers will specify the user to run the shell as but will not affect which shell is actually run.19:23
solid_liqRioting_pacifist: sudo -i   is like   su -19:23

stdinthe kde4 package pretty much installs all of kde4, the kubuntu-kde4-desktop package installs a default KDE4 install23:56
FoxI2Does kde4 have a different adept manager? Because mine doesn't seem to show package info or required packages info and such.23:57
JuJuBeeWell, I am looking to have kde3.x and kde4 both so I can switch back if need be.  Want to play with 4 see how it does.  I do not use gnome at all.  Should I go with kde4-desktop?23:58
DragnslcrJuJuBee- yeah, install kubuntu-kde4-desktop23:58
JuJuBeeThat will still allow me to choose between 3 and 4 correct?  At login?23:59
DragnslcrYup23:59
