syntaxblacki bet im going to break my install on linux about 5 times00:26
ced_you have a ati card in your pc?00:26

syntaxblackwell its running fairly fast00:28
syntaxblackkubuntu loads up faster than ubuntu did for some reason00:28
syntaxblackoh well00:29
ced_actionparsnip, i bet you know how to make a bat file work in wine :-300:29
ActionParsnipsyntaxblack: it can be faster, but as a linux newb you accept defaults. if you dig further you can get extra horse power and save space but you seem tie to gloss00:29
syntaxblackall in good time00:29
ActionParsnipced_: it would only run on the scope of wine, it depends what its intention is00:29
syntaxblackthe thing is00:29
ced_i want to install a SRCDS server. its windows based, so it needs wine00:30
syntaxblackim a vj and dj soo.... it better have some vj software00:30
ActionParsnip!audacity | syntaxblack00:30

ActionParsnipsyntaxblack: yeah you can do that with a mid range pc00:34
ActionParsnipced_: ok no problem00:35
syntaxblackwell im a cgi student so...00:35
syntaxblacki need beef00:35
syntaxblackman beef00:35
ced_syntaxblack: you can do everything on a basic PC with linux, as long as it doesnt require intesive calculations.00:35
syntaxblackmaya = intensive calculations00:35
ced_for that you need a better pc, i guess. it would still run, but just slower.00:36
syntaxblackwell i custom built mine00:36
ced_anyway, actionparsnip, do you know how?00:36
syntaxblackso its all good00:36
ced_k00:36

nitini've also tried suse, but found it bulky00:40
ced_actionparsnip: because, would you do that to a server? would you want a reliabilty machine with blingbling? lol00:41
ced_a server needs performance, and stability.00:41

MachinTrucChoseI clicked the wrong thing during the last Adept Updater run, basically I told it not to replace grub's menu.lst, and I want to undo that. Menu.lst is not being updated to include the latest kernel image.  I tried manually editing menu.lst but it's not a simple case of creating a new entry where I replace 2.6.24.17 with 2.6.24.1902:29

NickPresta!rootirc03:38
ubottuIt's not technically our business, but we'd like to tell you that IRC'ing as root is a Very Bad Idea (tm). After all, doing anything as root when root is not needed is bad, and especially bad with software that connects to the Internet.03:38
NickPresta:)03:38
intelikeyhydrogen the risk is not large. but there is risk involved,  and as i have been informed it adds trouble/frustration to the ircops also.    (if you get hacked that is)03:40
hydrogentheir is risk involved as soon as you plug your computer into the world wide interblog03:40
intelikeybut far less if you don't do stupid stuff like irc'ing as root... :)03:41
hydrogenno03:41
hydrogenthe same amount03:41
intelikeyno03:41
hydrogenwlel03:41
hydrogenmaybe a tiny bit more03:41
hydrogenI'm pretty sure none of the major irc clients in use have had a security vulerability that allows remote command execution in... ages03:42
intelikeywouldn't bet on it.03:42

Invisible_Slackhydrogen, What your not understanding is just because your running IRC doesn't mean they don't have your IP Address if you aren't using a vhost or shell03:49
hydrogenand uhh03:49
Invisible_Slackif I have your IP address you bet your butt I can get into your box if I'm remotely skilled, so don't be stupid and leave root logged in03:49
hydrogenwhat in the world does that matter?03:49
hydrogenthe root account in ubuntu is locked03:49
hydrogen-> they can try all they want to brute force the password03:49
Invisible_Slackif your logged in and I remote into your PC I got root, if your sudo'ed into root you ahve root terminal up03:50
Invisible_Slackdon't need to brute force nothing03:50
hydrogenits better for them to know the root account name (it's standard) then to know your account name (it can be brute forced)03:50
Invisible_Slackhydrogen, if you can't understand the risks of running IRC as root then you need to learn03:50
Invisible_Slackhydrogen,  and don't be so defensive when people give you a nice suggestion and tell you to be carefull03:51
hydrogenerr03:52
hydrogenyou are pretty not that smart03:52
intelikeyin one point i tend to agree with hydrogen there.  irc'ing as a ubuntu root.jr is an equally bad idea.03:52
hydrogenyou can't get into my box by just having my ip address03:53
hydrogenwithout guessing a password03:53
Invisible_Slackhydrogen, your the guy that builds a kernel as root even though it says in the instructions not to huh?03:53
hydrogenand without me having a ssh daemon running03:53
Invisible_Slackhydrogen, you do what your told not to because you think your good03:53
hydrogenor some other login daemon03:53
hydrogenno, the point is that running irc as a user is _at least as unsafe_ as running it as root ( possibly more unsafe on *buntu ) if the irc client is not vulnerable03:54
intelikeythe big if there says it all though03:54
Invisible_Slackprogram as root = do anything, program as user = restrictions03:55
Invisible_Slackhow is root = user?03:55
intelikeyand if it is, then you can have your irc client hujacked while your back is turned.03:55
hydrogenI already said "if the irc client is not vulernable"03:55
hydrogenintelikey: and with everyones favorite root junior, then you just quietly wait around for a shell, and try to sudo once in a while and hope you catch it in the fifteen minute period it doesn't ask for ones password03:55
Invisible_Slackgo to a website that has a java script, your web browser is user, it won't hijack the pc, browse as root and well your hijacked03:55
intelikeyInvisible_Slack ubuntu's root jr. account is just one john away from full root access03:56
intelikeybut i'll hush,  this is an old argument.03:56
hydrogenInvisible_Slack: right, you are missing the point03:56
Invisible_Slackintelikey, yes I know it is.. haven't been around for a while but I'm not noob03:56
hydrogenThe point is, if the program is not vulernerable, ircing as root is just as safe as ircing as a user, if not more safe03:57
Invisible_Slackhydrogen, not going to argue with you, just got off a 12 hour shift and i'm tired.. I was pointing out root = bad 99.9% of the time. thats why this network will kick you if your connected as root03:57
intelikeydangers imo are thus  root => root jr. >> all other accounts03:57
Invisible_Slackno program is 100% safe.. they all have vul's03:58
Invisible_Slacksome just haven't been found, HENCE shouldn't be as root ;)03:58

intelikeybut in general, anything that deviates from normal, is a deturant of sorts.   "security by obscurity"  while not realistic, yet still often affective to the casual script kiddy05:10
_dennisterokay...got so excited with this i plugged it all in without checking model number...promise is not in ubuntu hcl, but linux support for it looks promising...bbs05:11
intelikeyone thing that more accomplished "black hats" will notice are things that aren't normal, may also indicate danger zones.     "if i was trying to crack a random box, i wouldn't look for one with an open door. i'd look for one that looked exactly like a fresh install a year down the road for it's actual install."05:14

CostaRicanQuakerIt's funny that ubuntu might mean towards humanity, from an anarchist point of view it is more human in terms that it makes a machine a work of art that one has access to a means of communication and expression where one can become part of a community tht supports itself and as a means of commnuication that is available to individuals, that is not a piece of junk that technogeeks have set up for one to use and hope everything will work without k05:27

WarodPici: And how exactly does that help me boot the live environment?12:21
PiciWarod: It doesnt, I thought you asked how to make it not boot from the CD no matter what.12:22
WarodPici: I'm trying to get into the live, but it boots me from HD to broken installation no matter what.12:22

PiciWarod: You shouldnt be seeing your computers Grub menu at all if you boot from the CD.  You'd need to go into your BIOS and make sure that the CD drive is listed before your harddrive in the boot options12:23
WarodPici: I don't see Grub12:24
WarodPici: Gives me the CD boot menu, in which I choose the live or the install option. And the thing starts booting my HD environment anyways!12:24

syntaxblackis there a program to make a live cd of my entire desktop as it is now?13:38
Dr_willisTheres some remastering script tools out. but not used them, and they are not in the repos.13:41
Dr_willisIf you want a flexiable live cd system. Slax, or puppylinux may be a better idea13:42
syntaxblackso i gotta do it allllllllllll over again when i go set up laptops13:43
syntaxblackdang it13:44
Dr_willisI belive the alternative install cd - has some 'system' for seting up default installs  (OEM installs?)13:44
Dr_willisbut thats not making the users 'desktop' onto a live cd. :)13:44
syntaxblacki cant belive there isnt a a program for backing up your linux install into a iso or group of iso's13:45
syntaxblackit doesnt have to be a live cd really if i can back everything up some how13:46
Dr_willistheres dozens of backup/restore utilities in the package manager13:46
Dr_willisMondo/mindi can make a bootable 'clone' cd/dvd set.13:47
Dr_willisor archive to a network server, and allow restoring from a single boot/restore cd.13:47
syntaxblackso i just install Mondo/mindi on a fresh install of kubuntu on my other laptops and load up the back up iso13:48
syntaxblack?13:48
syntaxblackand hey prestomato?13:48
Dr_willisNo.. you install mondo/mindi.. backup that system.. and put those disks in a new machine.. and get a clone.13:48

Dr_willisNo need to 'install' the os' then restore. :)13:48
Dr_willisthats how i had to do stuff years ago with windows. :)13:48

syntaxblackthen i can just set up a clone and give everyone in my uni copies13:49
Dr_willisproblem will be they will all have identical hostnames/password/other things also..13:49
Dr_willisand if the hardware is very different you will have issues.13:50

syntaxblackjust switch a few drivers and it will work13:51

Dr_willistry it and see i guess13:51
elsinorehow can find what module is handling mouse and keyboard ?13:51

Dr_willisjust backing up the  HOME directory is even easier.13:52

mmo|ActionParsnip: GREAT...it worked! Thanks a lot. Do you know what it was that I actually did?20:01
ActionParsnipmmo|: ok you are new to linux so i'll explain a little20:02
ActionParsnipmmo|: in windows the kernel is monolithic, it does what it does and thats all20:02
ActionParsnipmmo|: in linux the kernel is modular and you can add and remove modules as required to add stuff you need20:02
cliff_ok20:03
rickestlinux is a monolithic kernel, too20:03
ActionParsnipmmo|: the module for your network card is loaded at boot but for that particular card it is not right20:03
cliff_video?20:03
ActionParsniprickest: then howcome you can modprobe modules into it20:03
rickestActionParsnip: those are drivers20:03
ActionParsniprickest: its a kernel module20:03
rickestthat's exactly what the great debate between Tanenbaum and Torvalds was about20:04
ActionParsnipmmo|: so we removed the module then shoved it back in with different settings20:04

ActionParsniprickest: i sit on the side of its called modprobe not driprobe20:04
mmo|ActionParsnip: ok! Thanks for the info! Normally the settings would not stay when reboot or?20:04
rickestActionParsnip: that's a binary distinction, not kernel architecture20:05
ActionParsnipmmo|: get updated man, if the update doesnt fix it you may have to add that set of instructions to your bootup to make it permanent but hopefully the update will fix it20:05
ActionParsniprickest: thats how i see it20:05
rickestActionParsnip: then you see it wrong, sorry. linux is a monolithic kernel20:06
ActionParsniprickest: and it kinda makes sense how you plug in a module to the kernel to make it work20:06
mmo|ActionParsnip: yes, I also figure that the update fixes it. I was just curious if the modprobe thing stays after a reboot?20:06
ActionParsniprickest: fine20:06
rickesthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel#Architecture20:06

HighHoubuntu: can you enter recovery mode22:47

ubuntunone of the kernels seem to work22:47
gav_if I try '/etc/init.d/gdm restart' than system suspend22:48
gav_any help?22:48
HighHoubuntu do you even get the option to enter consol in rescue?22:48
ubuntuim not sure what you mean22:48
CostaRicanQuakerwill ubuntu become as big as debian?22:48
CostaRicanQuakerwhich is more "free" and does ubuntu aim to become as free with gobuntu?22:49
TimSCostaRicanQuaker: It will be bigger and freer.22:49
CostaRicanQuakerTimS: you say it as though you knew it to be a fact22:50
HighHoubuntu: if you get no options, i will assume no. Have you tryed pressing ctrl + alt + f1 or f2?22:50
TimSCostaRicanQuaker: Why are you here?22:50
ubuntuyes22:50
ubuntui have22:50
ubuntuand i get the terminal22:50
ubuntuso i can login from there22:50
geekCostaRicanQuaker: well, at the end of the day you're free to chose the distro that you like the best22:50
ubuntubut after that i dont know what else i can do22:51
CostaRicanQuakeryes, the thing is, i am too used to dumb down windows and too partial to ubuntu22:51
steve555Ok everybody,I've just sorted my problem out.22:51
TimSubuntu: So, after you have logged in at the console does "startkde" work?22:51
CostaRicanQuakermeaning i want to stay with ubuntu but from reading it looks like debian is more "free"22:51
HighHoubuntu, login from there and run: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg22:51
ubuntuive not tried22:51
CostaRicanQuakerhowever it also looks as though ubuntu wants to become freer22:51
ubuntuif i were try type startkde willthat give me my graphics back?22:52
gav_so can anyone help me?22:52
witepaHi, I just installed 8.04 fresh, but Kubuntu was not able to recognize my wireless dongle. Could someone help me configure it?22:52
geekCostaRicanQuaker: well what's your main prority? usability or idiological purity?22:52
geekwitepa: what wireless dongle?22:52
TimSUbuntu is fairly free as it is, it doesn't supply propritary drivers on the CD.22:52
* geek has used etch, its very light, but not updated regularly. some things don't seem to work tho (like apt-get autoclean)22:52
CostaRicanQuakerwell, as long as i can learn to use a distro to eventually lern everything i can from it and all its programmes are free to use22:53
CostaRicanQuakeri'm happy22:53
geekubuntu is a better learning distro IMO22:53
TimSBut if you want freedom, use gobuntu. It is very similar to ubuntu, just without the propritary side. You should be able to get ubuntu support as normal.22:53
witepageek: a Linksys Compact-G USB Adaptor, Model No. WUSB54GC22:53
TimSI have hear mixed experiences with etch22:53
TimSwitepa: You'll need to use ndiswrapper22:54
TimShttp://jefim.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/how-to-linksys-wusb54gc-wireless-and-ubuntu-linux-704-feisty/22:54
CostaRicanQuakeryes, but i am just switching from windows xp and i have no linux previous experience i mean sure i used kubuntu like two years ago but just used it, didn't know anything about it or had any interest22:54
ubuntushould i try startkde?22:54
CostaRicanQuakerbut gobuntu seems new enough for me not to be good at learning it sa it specified it's probably best for experieneced linux users at this stage22:54
geekwitepa: seems to be something on it on the forums... i'm poking at it22:54
CostaRicanQuakeri want to try either kubuntu or xubuntu22:54
TimSubuntu: try sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg22:55
geekCostaRicanQuaker: stick to one of the official ubuntu versions (kubuntu, ubuntu and xubuntu) then experiment from there...22:55
TimSCostaRicanQuaker: You use windows at the moment?22:55
HighHoCosta: you can really question all distro's, and depending who you ask you will get a diffrent responce. Personsoally i think ubuntu/kubuntu are both great distros for learning on and expanding from22:55
TimSIf so, try Wubi, you can use the flavours of ubuntu risk free, when you have learnt enough to get going, switch to gobuntu22:56
ubuntuwhat will that do?22:56
CostaRicanQuakerTimS: yes22:56
geekwitepa: it uses a ralink chipset, they have open source drivers, but you might need to compile it22:56
TimSubuntu: That will reconfigure the Graphical User Interface, so it should be useable again22:56
CostaRicanQuakerHighHo: so i will probably stick to kubuntu, now for my girlfriend's laptop, in a couple of years if i want to help her and she has xubuntu and i have kubuntu22:56
HighHoubuntu: it will reconfigure your graphics server to how it was set up initially22:57
witepageek: alright, I will probably need some help as how to do that, I have no internet access on the Kubuntu computer, as it has no ethernet port22:57
TimSgeek: I have a ralink card, I couldn't get the compiled driver to work, ndiswrapper was the only way22:57
CostaRicanQuakeriwll i be able to help her? as in its pretty similar? and is it easier for wifi and an old laptop to use xubuntu in terms of convenience as opposed to kubuntu?22:57
geekwitepa, TimS: personally i have never gotten it working, i usuallly let a bored friend to do it22:58
witepaTimS: I was told by a friend that he was able to use this dongle "out of the box" though22:58
TimSwitepa: If you use the CD as a repository, you can install ndiswrapper, then download a driver on another computer and move it over and load it in.22:58
TimShttp://jefim.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/how-to-linksys-wusb54gc-wireless-and-ubuntu-linux-704-feisty/22:58
TimSThats the easiest way I think22:58
HighHoCostaRicanQuaker: xubuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu have much in common, the main diffrence being the desktop enviroments22:59
TimSXubuntu is slightly lighter than ubuntu and kubuntu, as it uses the lighter xfce, apart from that, its just user preference/22:59
witepaTimS: how do I use the CD as a repository?23:00
TimSIf you open adept, then go "File" > "Manage Repositories"23:00
TimSSwitch to the third party software tab, and there should be a CD entry at the top, starting with cdrom:23:01
TimSIf not, click the add cd-rom button below.23:01
TimSEither way, tick the box next to the entry23:02
TimSClose that, then just look for the package called ndiswrapper.23:02
CostaRicanQuakerwhat advatanges or how is ubuntu better than mandriva?23:03
TimSYou will have to find the driver(.exe) from a cd or from the internet and then move it onto linux, and unpack it. After that, follow the guide.23:03
CostaRicanQuakeri just called my grilfriend to dissuade this guy from doing anything other than backing up her laptop23:03
TimSCostaRicanQuaker: The main one for me is support.23:03
CostaRicanQuakeras i want to install xubuntu on her laptop23:03
witepaTimS: alright, I'll try that and be back soon23:03
TimSI have found ubuntu support very reliable.23:03
TimSwitepa: Good luck :p23:03
HighHoCostaRicanQuaker: I dont think anyone can argue distos, personally i think expertiement if possible and see what suits you.23:04
TimSCostaRicanQuaker: The best way to try distros out is using live disks, and seeing what you like and what works for you,23:05
CostaRicanQuakerkubuntu for me and xubuntu for my girl then23:05
witepaWhat about exiting the realm of Linux? What about things like OpenSolaris?23:05
TimSGo to the shops and look for a linux magazine, they often have disks with live cds of distros on, try them out, see what you like.23:06
TimSwitepa: Anything but AIX.23:06
TimSGood old CDE>23:06
CostaRicanQuakeri'm not that muchinto unix like23:07
CostaRicanQuakerbut eventually i'd like to learn how to use freebsd23:07
CostaRicanQuakeri've heard cool stuff ffrom my friend chance he's scottish he works maintaining and creating webpages23:07
TimSBSD is quite nice, but its more complicated to get into than linux is, IMO.23:08
CostaRicanQuakeryes thats wht he said23:08
CostaRicanQuakerso since i had already used kubuntu in the past23:08
CostaRicanQuakeri might as well learn about the linux kernel and a little bit of unix on the side23:08
CostaRicanQuakerand maybe in five to 7 years23:08
CostaRicanQuakeri'll try it out23:08
witepa5 to 7 years?23:09
CostaRicanQuakerwell, i want to learn it well you know, i'm a windows user so...23:09
CostaRicanQuakeri'm no computer genius, i'm a sensitive guy, i play guitar, write poetry, bicycle...not a math person23:10
CostaRicanQuakerand i'm old23:10
CostaRicanQuakeri'm 2223:10
HighHooh god, dont run bsd then23:10
CostaRicanQuakerso that's the aproximate ihave in my mind23:10
CostaRicanQuakertill i can dare try it23:11
geek22 is not old23:11
CostaRicanQuakerHighHo: no no i want to learn23:11
HighHoCostaRicanQuaker: im only joking, you should learn what you can, have a safe partion and get your hands dirty trying new distos and building software23:12
witepaTimS, geek: hmm, according to this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772077 it should work right out of the box... unfortunately, I don't know KDE 4 as well as I do gnome23:15
witepaalthough people seem to be having mixed results23:15
CostaRicanQuakeri will be back later23:18
CostaRicanQuakercheers and thanks for your advice23:18
soopurmandoes the kubuntu 8.04 DVD image install kde 3 or kde 4 ?  'cause i know for the CDs there were two seperate .iso's, one for each...23:19

HighHosoopurman: kde remix cd's contain kde423:19
soopurmanso if what i'm downloading doesn't say "remix" then it should have kde3 ?23:20
HighHoyes soopurman23:21

maltedik(and pipe it through gpg for more security)23:42
maltedikwait...23:42
EagleScreeni also remember that it freeze using KDE 3.5, i cannot remember a freeze using Gnome or KDE423:44
EagleScreeni can remeber that two freezes were just opening a file with kate, one of them it was /boot/grub/menu.lst23:45
DragnslcrEagleScreen- a complete freeze is usually a hardware issue23:45
DragnslcrEagleScreen- my experience is that it's usually the GPU overheating, sometimes it could be bad memory23:45
EagleScreeni have not error in memory check23:47
EagleScreenit never has freeze under Windows XP, and i think it never frozen using Gnome or KDE4, i start to think that KDE 3.5 could have any problem23:49
maltedikEagleScreen: popped elcos are a common reason for unreasonable freezes23:52
EagleScreenmaltedik, popped elcos???? what is that23:53
