CostaRicanQuakerwhy do you use gnome over kde'10:10
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, cleaner, simpler (not that I need it simple) and kde 4 sux so far10:10
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, kde 3.5.9 is good and very configurable but, can be overkill10:11
CostaRicanQuakerwhat's wrong with kde 4?10:11
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, it ain't ready by a long way10:11
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, and if you are looking for something lite gnome is a better option IMHO10:13

CostaRicanQuakerbut its currently on xp so its better than current anyway10:24
DistroJockeylesshaste, maybe in a terminal:  alsamixer10:25
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, if it's running XP, Ubuntu or Kubuntu will be fine10:25
lesshasteDistroJockey, I can't see anything wrong there10:26

DistroJockeynot sure why gdm is listed if you started with xubuntu though10:45
CostaRicanQuakerkdm10:46

CostaRicanQuakeri couldn't install xubuntu nor kubuntu10:46
CostaRicanQuakerboth from the live and alternate cds10:46
CostaRicanQuakerthat i had burned10:46
CostaRicanQuakerbecause htey were giving me errors10:46

DistroJockeyand use the spacebar to un * xubuntu desktop10:52

CostaRicanQuakerDistroJockey: do you know how to use partition magic?11:06
CostaRicanQuakeri basically need to use some of the space thats' free on the desk11:06
CostaRicanQuakerdisk11:06
CostaRicanQuakerto use it for the ntsf windows partition11:07
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, nope, but I know how to use gparted11:07
CostaRicanQuakerlink me to gparted for an iso file11:08
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, you want to try and install Windows in unpartitioned space that is not at the start of the disk?11:08
CostaRicanQuakerwell thats' the thing11:08
CostaRicanQuakerit doesn't have that option11:08
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, I did earlier was called pertedmagic11:08
CostaRicanQuakerit shows only the nig partition and it says11:08
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, no, it's not possible11:09
DistroJockeypartedmagic^11:09
CostaRicanQuakerwell11:09
CostaRicanQuakerit says11:09
CostaRicanQuakerpmagic11:09
CostaRicanQuakermaybe you're right11:09
CostaRicanQuakermaybe i'm confusing it11:09
CostaRicanQuakeri jsut burned the iso for it11:09
CostaRicanQuakernow i need to create some free space11:10
DistroJockeypartition magic is a non free software11:10
CostaRicanQuakeryou were theone who linked me to parted magic right?11:10
DistroJockeyWindows will want the free space to be at the start of the disk11:10
DistroJockeyyep11:10
CostaRicanQuakerwell the thing is it only shows two partitions when i boot up with windows xp cd11:11
CostaRicanQuakerone is11:11
CostaRicanQuakerthe huge partition11:11
CostaRicanQuakerin which kubuntu is now11:11
CostaRicanQuakerand has the option of using that wholething11:11
CostaRicanQuakerand otherwise the swap11:11
CostaRicanQuakerso you tell me11:11
DistroJockeyyeah, it won't be easy and may not even be possible11:12
DistroJockeyIt is usually better to install Windows first and then a buntu11:12
DistroJockeymaybe google for:  how to install windows after installing ubuntu11:13
DistroJockeyor do it the other way round11:14
DistroJockeyhere's the first link (maybe it can be of some help):  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38435511:15
CostaRicanQuakerinstall windows, format partition then run gparted or partedmagic and make free space for ubuntu to reinstall it to upgrade to kubuntu again?11:17
CostaRicanQuakerhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows11:18
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, no, when installing Windows, leave some unpartitioned space for buntu and it's swap11:18
DistroJockeythen you won't need partedmagic11:19
CostaRicanQuakerok so let me see if i get it correctly11:19
CostaRicanQuakeri go and install windows11:19
CostaRicanQuakeron the big partition11:19
CostaRicanQuakerformatting everything11:19
CostaRicanQuakerthen i installubuntu again11:20
CostaRicanQuakerand you promise you will help me11:20
CostaRicanQuakerupgrade to kubuntu again11:20
microwaveraren't you supposed to find a xcfe section on the usr ?11:20
DistroJockeywell, not quite. When installing Windows, tell it to delete all partitions and then tell it to create a space for itself that is smaller than the drive's size11:20
CostaRicanQuakeroh like 60 gb ntsf only?11:21
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, yeah11:21
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, then you should have unpartitioned space that buntu can use happily11:21
CostaRicanQuakerok wait for me here man i'll brb11:22
DistroJockeyCostaRicanQuaker, I have a beer left, I'll be here :)11:23
microwaverHello aren't you supposed to find the different gui packs on the usr map?  like /usr/share/gnome can't seem to find the xcfe one11:30
DistroJockeymicrowaver, how about  /usr/share/xfce411:32
microwaverDistroJockey, yup is there. thanks. strange thing is, WHY WON'T IT FRIGGIN LOAD :p11:34

DistroJockeymicrowaver, there is also  /usr/share/xfwm411:35
DistroJockeymicrowaver, not sure, never done it. But I do like the tasksel tool:  sudo tasksel11:36

DistroJockeymicrowaver, I guess you hit space to un * ubuntu desktop11:36
DistroJockeymicrowaver, should11:36
microwaverDistroJockey, none of the ubuntu things are checked ?11:37
DistroJockeymicrowaver, it may not do a complete removal though11:37
microwaverDistroJockey, only xubuntu is checked, tho I'm using gnome atm11:37
DistroJockeymicrowaver, then I guess tasksel is not all knowing11:38

gaurdroyesitisjustme, could you explain further?22:16
TheSheepyesitisjustme: yes, he can detect the hardware address of your network card (MAC). you can however configure your home computer to relay the network connection to other computers, or temporarily fake the hardware address22:16
TheSheepyesitisjustme: but it's pretty advanced22:16
gaurdroproprietarysucks,  what port does your tilt plug into?  i'm not sure what a tilt is.22:17
proprietarysuckshttp://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=AT%26T+Tilt(TM)&q_sku=sku106000922:18
proprietarysucksusb22:18
proprietarysucksif you are an expert I can elaborate the effects further22:19
gaurdroI'm wondering if it's not picking up your phone as a modem.  and more information is always a good thing when troubleshooting22:20
proprietarysucksalright you asked for it22:20
proprietarysucks1. in windows vista, when you plug this in, it comes up as a block device22:21
proprietarysucks2. if you go into the phone and start the connection sharing, then vista suddenly sees a network device22:21
proprietarysucksin fedora, when I plug it in, neither is seen apparently22:22
proprietarysucksbut I leave it plugged in just to charge it22:22
proprietarysuckshowever in xubuntu, the second i plug it in my connectivity is lost22:22
proprietarysucksit shows up as eth1 and has an ip address22:23
proprietarysucksand interestingly, this is what I've discovered22:23
gaurdroxubuntu is seeing the phone as  a modem.22:23
gaurdrodo you normally connect via wireless?22:23
proprietarysuckswith it plugged in, when I ping my gateway, ping shows the 'from' ip address as mine. however when I ping my dns server it shows the from address as the tilt's ip address (!) even when I ping -I eth022:23
proprietarysucksno I normally use wired eth0 with static22:24
gaurdrodo you have the network manager added to the panel.  I don't remember if it defaults on or not.22:24
yesitisjustmei thought to cycle a modem you just had to turn it off for a while and the back on22:24
proprietarysucksgaurdro: it does and I do22:25
gaurdrodoes it give more than one option for connection with the phone plugged in?22:25
proprietarysucksdoes it give more than one option for connection22:26
proprietarysuckslet me think about that22:26
yesitisjustmeya i has a connector for phone line and a bigger connector for ethernet build in the laptop22:26
proprietarysuckswhen I click on manual configuration it shows eth0 and eth1 when it's plugged in, along with a point to point22:27
proprietarysucksnormally, as in now, it shows eth0 and point to point only22:27
yesitisjustmeplus i even tried a pcmcia card wich makes a nosie when it gets detected on boot and dongle cable lights up22:27
proprietarysucksbut as far as the little text box which comes up and has a dot in wired network, no it stays with only wired network22:27
yesitisjustmebut when try to browse it wont22:27
yesitisjustmeand there is like activity in the modem the lights22:28
gaurdroproprietarysucks, try  running   'ifconfig eth1 down'22:29
proprietarysucksI tried doing that and it said no configuration for eth122:30
proprietarysucksifdown eth1 actually22:30
gaurdroyou might have to do it as root.22:32

proprietarysuckssince ubuntu is rediculous about that ;-p22:37
proprietarysuckssudo ls ; sudo seq 1 10 ; sudo ls -al22:37
proprietarysucksanyone know how to connect to remote desktop with xfce ?22:38
jvin248I happened to be working on this a couple of days ago (8.04 client machine, 7.10 server)... For remote desktop you'll need to install on the server 'vino' and run 'vino-preferences' (or add to menu) and have launched '/usr/lib/vino/vino-server' (or add into autolaunch menu).  Client you should just need the Remote Desktop menu item (installed in 8.04 default I think).  It seems to work across the LAN, though I want to get it working across WAN next.23:11
zoredacheit isn't a really good idea to use VNC over the internet...23:21
zoredacheit would be better to build an SSH tunnel (try gstm) and then connect via the tunnel23:22
jvin248thanks for the tip on gstm... Quick look it seems good.  I'll have to do some experimenting.23:27
