BluesKajhi m_tadeu01:12
m_tadeuwhats the story with this new kubuntu release?01:12
Odd-rationalem_tadeu: just 8.04.1 has been released...01:12
BluesKajit's very stable and easier to set up application-wise than previous releases , IMO01:13
m_tadeuwhere can I find the changelog?01:15
DragnslcrIt's probably just all the security and bug fixes that have been released since April01:16
m_tadeuI see01:16
m_tadeuit's just not usual to make a release based on that01:16
DragnslcrIt saves people that are installing it from having to download a whole bunch of updates01:17
mitsarionasit's still hardy...just an updated cd image01:17
m_tadeuI haven't been paying much attention on the updates....was there a big security problem, or something like that?01:19
DragnslcrThere are always updates to various packages01:19

mr---t-mines fine maybe they can help at #firefox03:19
[ifr0g]mr---t-, yeah, maybe. but i think i will stick with 2 till i reinstall to 8.0403:21
mr---t-[ifr0g]: i am using 8.04 btw03:25
[ifr0g]yes, couple of my friends said firefox is fine on 6.0403:26
[ifr0g]8*03:26
[ifr0g]mr---t-, So, Do you happen to know vlc and tv streaming?03:26
[ifr0g]or*03:27
mr---t-no03:27
[ifr0g]k03:27
mr---t-never used either03:27
mr---t-I use my computer as a computer no dvds or tv03:28
[ifr0g]I was trying to get my vlc to stream a youtube playlist over to my cafe's ip tv.03:28
[ifr0g]mr---t-, k ;)03:29
mr---t-others here may know03:29
[ifr0g]mr---t-, So what do you do for a living?03:29
yurimxpxmanhow do I make my laptop lock when I close the lid?03:29
[ifr0g]yurimxpxman, huh, did you check the power option?03:30
[ifr0g]there is a small batter icon on the kicker.03:30
mr---t-[ifr0g]: computer desktop support,  but here is a help channel and this is off topic03:30
[ifr0g]mr---t-, Ah, ok :003:31
[ifr0g]I guessed no one is chatting, so wont create much disturbance.03:32
mr---t-prolly not but I never know03:32
[ifr0g]kazol, Indian ?03:33
[ifr0g]mr---t-, So  you are new here?03:33
mr---t-yes fairly03:33
[ifr0g]I been here since the kubuntu first release.03:33
mr---t-I've only been using linux for about 3 months , I have to work with M$03:34
[ifr0g]me too, sadly. My work deals with windows servers :(03:35
FirefisheWelcome to the Woot Woild of Tux, mr---t- ;)03:35
mr---t-I'm lovin it, I learn alot hanging out in here03:36
StevenXhello guys.03:37
mr---t-It amazes me how things that are new features in M$ have been in linux for a long time03:37
StevenXHow can i make a list of all the packages installed on my computer?03:37
[ifr0g]StevenX, Hi.03:37
StevenX[ifr0g], do you know what command I can use to make a list of the packages installed on my kbuntu box?03:38
[ifr0g]stuq, huh i guess dpkg -l03:39
StevenX[ifr0g], yea, but I want that exported to a list. Like list.txt03:40
kgxis it possible to launch non-executable files (such as *.jpg) from the konsole so that it opens in the default viewer?03:40
[ifr0g]Is that the list you want ^^03:40
[ifr0g]what format ?03:41
kazol[ifr0g]: You prefer Windows over *nix??03:41
kazol[ifr0g]: I am faced with everyone using Windows and I simply hate it.03:41
[ifr0g]kazol, Absolutely.03:41
kazol[ifr0g]: Just curious, why?03:42
[ifr0g]kazol, Windows is not bad. Its just too expensive and closed and unsecure.03:43
jillhe meant it is BAD))03:43
kazol[ifr0g]: It's extremely unstable, impossible to use, and has absolutely no flexibility.03:43
jillThose three causes = bad i think03:44
kazolAnd don't get me started on the MS-DOS shell....03:44
[ifr0g]kazol, Unstable, yesh when its on the internet. Impossible to configure compared to linux.03:44
kazolI wouldn't even call it a "shell."03:44
[ifr0g]kazol, WIndows how have super shell or something.03:45
[ifr0g]:P03:45
kazolYes, I know about it.03:45
kazolIt is still inferior.03:45
matthew_lol....03:46
matthew_are you guys serious?03:46
kazolYes03:46
kazolI am extremely anti-Microsoft.03:46
matthew_wow...03:46
[ifr0g]kazol, Its not windows thats bad but its methodology behide its creation.03:47
[ifr0g]For example look at reactOS03:47
kazolIt's still not good enough for me.03:47
matthew_windows is not bad at all. not everyone can use linux, and OSx us worthless to most03:48
kazolWhenever I use Windows, I feel severely deprived.03:48
kazolAs though I have little control over anything.03:49
kazolEverything is hidden underneath and not viewable to the user.03:49
kazolAnd the user is treated like a complete idiot.03:49
matthew_like what?03:49
[ifr0g]Some people dont want to know.03:49
mr---t-Ive never had to reboot my linux box03:49
matthew_well no one really cares03:49
kazolI need to know everything that is going on with the system.03:50
[ifr0g]kazol, Do  you care how your car works before you can dirve it ?03:50
kazolYes, I am obsessed with technology.03:50
jaakkometreating users like complete idiots is generally speaking a good idea03:50
[ifr0g]or mictowave.03:50
kazoljaakkome: True, else people would be invoking "rm -rf */*"03:50
kazoloops, I meant /*03:51
kazolI believe that consumer technology is too "simple" to use.03:51
matthew_most people dont really care how a computer works, they just want to check their mail and watch porn, you dont need linux to do that. windows is designed for the computer illiterate03:51
[ifr0g]excatly ^^03:52
kazolof course03:52
kazolBut not all people are computer/technology illiterate.03:52
matthew_majority are though03:52
kazolFor example, developers and sysadmins.03:52
matthew_k...03:53
matthew_is that the majority of PC users?03:53
matthew_no.03:53
jaakkomeyes and computers are quite complex devices nowadays... I had a decent understanding of how my C64 worked. Now it'd take me years to figure out even the basics of how my video card works.03:53
[ifr0g]:)03:53
kazolComputer hardware engineering is not an easy occupation.03:54
kazolThe Windows platform isn't flexible at all...for example, I cannot install it to my wifi router (8MB RAM).03:55
matthew_so what?03:55
kazolOr iPod, pda, etc.03:55
matthew_thats not what it was designed for03:55
[ifr0g]lol03:55
kazolI cannot choose my desktop environment...KDE/GNOME/xfce/etc. or just a CLI.03:56
matthew_it was designed to be a desktop GUI for the average idiot, not something to load onto your microwave03:56
kazolI hate using the GUI...it's too slow and has minimal functionality.03:56
[ifr0g]Windows will become the minority preety soon.03:57
matthew_slow? maybe in vista, XP is very fast for me and is very functional.03:57
matthew_and no, windows will always be on top03:57
kazolVista's hardware requirements are simply ridiculous.03:57
matthew_i agree03:57
matthew_vista is stupid03:57
[ifr0g]same.03:57
matthew_and bugged03:57
kazolOf course Windows will always be popular.03:57
jaakkomewindows is very fast for me to use: I just click the "world of warcraft" icon on my desktop and off I go03:57
[ifr0g]lol :D03:58
Daisuke_Idomatthew_: why are you baiting people here?03:58
kazoljaakkome: But very new hardware is needed, and Windows tends to accumilate unneeded files over time.03:58
matthew_baiting is fun03:58

kazolYes, I believe you did. lol.03:59

kazolAnd I exacerbated it.03:59
Daisuke_Idoreading further back, that pretty much applies to everyone involved03:59
[ifr0g]:D ok, guys linux is the winner. Case closed.03:59

Daisuke_Ido:D04:00
[ifr0g]Lets talk about linux :)04:00
kazol[ifr0g]: I guess that I do agree that linux is only for certain users, as seen from the failure of the Linux PC at Walmart.04:00
matthew_lolk04:00
[ifr0g]:)04:01
Daisuke_Idokazol: now you made me get involved.  failure?  they couldn't keep it on the shelves.04:01
Daisuke_Idoi want one :(04:01
kazolFortunately, user-friendly distros (notably Kubuntu and Ubuntu) are bringing Linux to the masses.04:01
matthew_oh yea. the asus eee is pretty popular too04:01
[ifr0g]lol :D04:01
matthew_although you can get a stripped down version of XP on it...04:01
Daisuke_Idokazol: i think part of the gpc's failure with the masses (enthusiasts love the low power little buggers) is that gOS isn't very polished04:02
kazolI guess so, and many other reasons.04:02
kazolFor example, the average user will not figure out how to install Turbotax or iTunes.04:02
asobito upgrade to hardy from gutsy, i just update from adept?04:02
kazol(Assuming the OS will have Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird, vlc, etc.)04:03
mr---t-that would be a down grade04:03
jaakkomeasobi: yes, there should be a button for that there04:03
[ifr0g]OK, Got to reboot my fresh kernel. brb..04:03
mr---t-sorry misread04:03
asobiok. what are possible things that could go wrong after upgrade?04:03
asobiis there anything i should do beforehand?04:03
matthew_backup04:04
matthew_as always04:04
cpk1asobi: the system might be left unstable04:04
asobiwhy unstable?04:04
Daisuke_Idoasobi: well, the world could end, fire could rain down from the skies, obliterating life as we know it...  of course, that would be completely coincidental, but would count as something that went wrong after an upgrade04:04
cpk1in my experience it is really hit and miss04:04
cpk1I have never successfully upgraded but I hear from tons of people who have no problems04:04
Daisuke_Idoi personally prefer a clean install, and therefore keep my /home on a separate partition04:05
asobido i uninstall anything?04:05
cpk1asobi: technically the upgrader should do it all for you04:05
asobimy home is on a separate partition04:05
cpk1you just cross your fingers04:05
Daisuke_Idoasobi: then you have a lot less to worry about04:05
cpk1at this point you might want to just wait until the next release though =P04:06
Daisuke_Idobecause if something does go wrong, you can install fresh and you won't have as big a problem getting everything together04:06
Daisuke_Idocpk1: why?  it's lts04:06
mr---t-Ive done it both ways but only the clean install was trouble free04:06
[ifr0g]Did i miss something?04:06

matthew_yea04:07
jaakkomewell, I had no trouble, if you're taking polls04:07
asobihow long will it take?04:08
cpk1oh, nm just kde4 remix isnt lts04:08
Odd-rationaleneither is LTS, iirc...04:08
cpk1Kubuntu 8.04 features the rock solid KDE 3 and is supported for 18 months (until October 2009). from the site04:09
cpk1oh yeah thats normal04:09

Jucatoand there are also distros that would need to continue supporting KDE 3, even if it's from their end only (but these also have KDE developers in their midst)07:36
_2Jucato what did i miss ?       papabean said "if they abandon..."   and that "abandon was a harsh word,,,"  i said that "abandon was an accurate word" for describing the "if they (the kde guys) stop all developement of..."    i don't think anyone tried to imply that it had been abandoned07:37
papabeanOnly because I included "if".07:38

ubottuHi! Welcome to #kubuntu!13:33
rysiekI need to do some x-server magic here that is so specific, that I am not even able to ask google properly for it13:33
rysiekthing is: I have a machine that is supposed to act as a "media server"13:33
rysiekit has a doal-head gfx card (gf8500)13:34
rysiekthe idea is: to head A presentation monitors are connected and a media presentation runs there all the time13:34
rysiekon head B there is a single monitor for the admin in the media server room13:35
rysiekfirst thing I need to get working is starting X, and a single app on X, just after the system sarts, instead of kdm13:35

flaccidwell X runs out of the box and not sure what the rest you said means13:36
flaccidmultiple displays are configurable if thats your question13:37
rysiekflaccid: step 1. is rm /etc/rc.*/S*kdm so that kdm does not start13:37
flaccidrysiek: thats the wrong way to do it. you should remove the kdm package.13:38
rysiekflaccid: step 2. is create a short script that will start X as a given user and execute a given app - something along the lines of: su -l -c startx some_user13:38
flaccidthats not right either13:38
rysiekflaccid: what's right for step2 then13:38
flaccidwell your steps seem to be bad practices13:39
flaccidwhat are you trying to achieve?13:39
rysiekflaccid: I need kdm/kde in case some more complicated things are needed (like playing a movie)13:39

rysiekflaccid: what way. I said that autologin stays13:52
rysiekflaccid: I understood what you guys told me, and adjusted accordingly13:53
vonI can't find anything in System Settings -Printers   panel13:53
rysiekinok: one issue with autologin still buggers me: it auto-logins to the last session type; now, I have two session types: KDE and my own, pressentation-centric; when I come by and login to the KDE session so that I could play something more than the presentation, and then turn the machine off, next tme it auto-loginsinto the KDE session.13:55
rysiekflaccid: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^13:55
rysiekflaccid: is there a way I can make kdm *always* auto-login into a specified session?13:55
rysiekflaccid: not the "last"/"saved" one13:56
flaccidin your case you disable sessions and only use autostart. i was just looking and because of the way ubuntu is designed, it doesn't seem like there is a graceful way to do no login manager. but from memory simply removing kdm is suffice so not sure the actual effect.13:56
flaccidrysiek: you are better to just turn off sessions13:56
rysiekflaccid: ok, and when I need to get into KDE, instead into my pressentation session?13:57
flaccidif you are going to use kde then you should use auto login and if not then yeah13:57
rysiekflaccid: we're talking about X/KDM, *not* KDE, sessions here13:57
flaccidin that case for a second X session you want to read up on how to use startx on another tty and the param used to launch a script or app in the params13:58
leitzIf I want to add hardy-backports to my Kubuntu repository, do I need to add the entire line "deb..." seperately or can I just add hardy-backports somewhere in a config file?13:59
flaccidthat can even be called from the autostart on the primary sessions, rysiek13:59
rysiekeh13:59
flaccidleitz: the entry is one line or you can simply add in adept manager13:59
rysiekflaccid: I think I have been isunderstood. I am not talking about KDE sessions. I am talking about X/KDM sessions. i.e. those selectable in KDM under Options -> Session Type13:59
flaccidrysiek: and?14:00
rysiekflaccid: I have created such a session, with my own session script, starting only the pressentation app I need14:00
flaccidwell im confused. im not sure on exactly what you want/need14:00
rysiekflaccid: and in Options -> Session Type now I have "Default", "KDE", "my_own_session"14:00
flaccidyeah thats the default session type from kdm14:01
ziggy_will KDE 3 still be an option in the next kubuntu?14:01
rysiekflaccid: pretty much like when you have GNOME ad KDE and you can choose between those in KDM/GDM14:01
flaccidziggy_: goto #ubuntu+1 and ask14:01
flaccid!intrepid | ziggy_14:01
ubottuziggy_: Alpha Software: Intrepid Ibex is the code name for K/ubuntu 8.10, due October 2008 - #ubuntu+1 for discussion. Kubuntu Intrepid will have KDE 4 as the default Desktop Environment - see  https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuIntrepidVersion | Warning lots of breaking software between now and October!14:01
rysiekflaccid: yeah, now it works this way that when the system boots-up and kdm starts, it auto-logins *into the last used session*14:01
leitzflaccid: Got it, thanks! Learning Kubunty, Adept, and a few other things at once.  :)14:02
rysiekflaccid: so, if I have been using KDE last time I was on that machine, it will auto-login into KDE sesson14:02
rysiekflaccid: ad if I have started the presentation session - it will start the pressentation one14:02
carahello all, still having that issue with the kde systemsettings.  They're not setting, I'm running the command "kdesu systemsettings" and I goes to update everything and it never does.  In fact the other day I let it "update" overnight I waited almost 20 hours and nothing has happened. In fact when I came back the update screen had started over again.  It starts over and over and never finishes.  Is there something I can do about this?14:02
rysiekflaccid: everything clear upt to this point?14:03
flaccidrysiek: still don't understand. anyway its all possible with the startx command14:03
rysiekflaccid: yeah, as a given user, and that was exactly what I was trying to use. [as root] su -l -c startx some_user14:03
rysiekflaccid: and after I said that, you said "it's a bad thing, use autologin"14:04
rysiekflaccid: now I am using autologin and trying to tell you thatI need it to always login into a GIVEN session, nt the LAST ACTIVE one14:05
rysiekflaccid: and you tell me to use startx14:05
rysiekflaccid: so, what's the deal, actually14:05
flaccidlike i said from the start, you can remove kdm14:05
flaccid!enter | rysiek14:05
ubotturysiek: Please try to keep your questions/responses on one line - don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation!14:05
vonSome of my CUPS printers are visible in Kate but not in firefox,openoffice,... How to add them?14:05
caravon is only one available in each? I think they may use the default printer.14:06
* cara may be wrong14:06
flaccidrysiek: also like i said, problem is that ubuntu checks login manager. you can try /etc/rc.local and run your startx command after removing X that minght work14:07
flaccidrysiek: you may wanna checkout the xinit -- :1 and startx -- :1 commands ...14:08
rysiekflaccid: ok, forget about rc.local. just tell me if you know a way to make KDM automagically log-in to a GIVEN, SPECIFIED session, NOT the last used one14:08
flacciderr ok14:08
flaccidi dont know everything but i will check if i can14:08
rysiekI tried to use startx as a specified user but it fails with some "is not authorised" message, so kdm autologin it shall probably be14:10
flaccid rysiek if you kill kdm then you can startx under any user14:10
flaccidas in sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop and if you had removed the kdm package it won't be running so you can do it14:10
voncara: No I've several CUPS printers visible in kate and in firefox/openoffice/... but not all14:10
rysiekflaccid: thing is, it (the pressentation app under X) has to start automagically after system bootup14:11
flaccidalso just looking now like i said before because of the ubuntu design, it looks like if you want to change this then you will have to edit the inittab14:11
flaccidX has to be up first for the app to run and be launched within that pts14:12
rysiekwhatever. kdm, autologin, google14:12
flaccidrysiek: if this was something like freebsd it would be an easy affair. but from my knowledge i don't see a way in ubuntu14:12
flaccidbecause of its design..14:12
flaccidim probably not the best one to help14:13
rysiekok, thanks anyway14:13
flaccidwhatever.14:13
rysiekbtw, ubuntu is linux, so there *is* a way :)14:13
drbobbflaccid: so back to my question: where is the inittab?14:13
rysiek/etc/inittab14:13
rysiekdrbobb: ^^^14:13
rysiekoops14:14
rysiekmy bad14:14
flaccidrysiek: ubuntu is a linux distro. of course there is a way. but i aint wasting my time hacking it, but you can.14:14
rysiekyup14:14
drbobbflaccid: nope.14:15
drbobbups, rysiek14:15
rysiekdrbobb: /etc/event.d/14:15
* flaccid yawns14:15
flaccidyou basically want runlevel 1 and then go from there. but yeah i aint done this stuff before on ubuntu14:18
flaccidall you need is something like this http://www.debianadmin.com/debian-and-ubuntu-linux-run-levels.html14:20
rysiekflaccid: yeah, thanks14:21

Alex135I tried duel booting windows and (K)Ubuntu on the same hdd but for some reason when i installed Ubuntu, it resized the windows partition to 4 gb and took the rest for its own when i wanted to split it reasonably even between the two... Is there a way i can resize the Ubuntu partition smaller and the Windows partition bigger without loosing all the work i have done so far?16:50
Alex135this is on a laptop btw, not this computer16:51
geomAlex135, using GParted ?16:53
Alex135geom, i cant repartition the Ubuntu partition if im booted into it i dont think16:53

Alex135geom, it wont let me unmount it, since its mounted to /16:55

Alex135geom, does it have gparted on the live cd? (i didn't know if it did or not)16:56

Thomas_annoyedsorry, the exact name as pictured badly here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/images/kg08.gif is called Disk & Filesystems17:32
Thomas_annoyedI like this interface above all to assign how I like my drives to act and where they should mount17:32

jhutchinsThomas_annoyed: So from a previous version, or just an earlier install of the same software?17:39

nowshiningor /etc/init.d/networking restart21:48

_2can someone sujest to me why "mount /dev/sda /media" might hang ?21:53
_2sda is a digital camera set to disk mode21:54
nowshiningsda should be ur harddisk21:54
_2for the record.   i have never seen mount just hang like this before.   i can't even kill -9 the process it's fully hung but doesn't seem to be affecting the rest of the system.21:54
_2nowshining no.21:54
nowshining_2: or sda121:54
nowshining_2: try sdb, etc..21:55
_2no   you are thinking in default only terms.21:55

_2my hard disks are hda and hdb mounted on /home and / respectively21:56

_2crimsun that assumes that there is a partition doesn't it ?22:00
_2and there isn't22:01
_2flash drives often don't default to partitions and as far as i know digital cameras don't default to using partitions either22:02

_2mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist22:03
crimsun(the device would be /dev/sda)22:04
_2hmmm fdisk -l hangs too    looks like some kind of i/o problem doesn't it....22:04
crimsun_2: only if reported by the kernel.22:04
_2then why the hang ?22:04
crimsunbecause there are known issues with certain ehci controllers.22:05
_2ehci ?22:05
_2is that in a camera ?22:06
TimZ1mnowshining: there is no update for kopete, i dont get any error messages, just nothing happens22:06

heinkel_111what is kubuntu 8.04.1 about? do we have to do the upgrade manually, or will it come automatically to us via apt magic?22:10
_2so maybe the camera has seen better days.22:10
crimsunno, it's an ehci controller issue.22:10
crimsunyou can hack around it by using https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/61235/comments/9822:10
ubottuLaunchpad bug 61235 in linux-source-2.6.20 "USB mass storage stops working after a while" [Medium,Confirmed]22:11
_2not sure what you mean ?    i was using this camera in this same fassion about two months ago without issue   so i doubt that you are on the right track there crimsun22:11
BlackdragHey guys.. I just installed and removed KDE4 using Adept (and not the apt-get command) and now I can't get Kubuntu to use KDE3 anymore.. I can't even try to manually start kdm22:11
Blackdragany ideas? I've tried installing and removing the kubuntu-desktop and other packages using apt-get22:11
_2my system hasn't changed in the last two months22:12
_2i'll look at the bug report anyway22:12
nowshining_2: u can try doing a fsck on ur next reboot. in the terminal cd / then do sudo /bin/bash then issue: touch /forcefsck22:14
_2nowshining why on reboot ?   it's a camera  not my hdd22:15
nowshininglol - fsck may fix some errors u may have - it's worth a try22:15
_2heh yeah but reboot is not likely to affect it.22:16
_2:)22:16
nowshining_2: it can fix tmp errors22:17
_2nowshining fsck just hangs like fdisk -l  and mount /dev/sda /media/sda do22:17
_2tmp ?    i dont think anything is using tmp atm22:17
nowshiningtmp = temporary22:17
nowshiningie: temporary problems22:18
nowshiningu can always just try a reboot to see if it fixes any errors22:18
_2now  hehhe it wont.   i'm not running a gui and nothing is using /tmp and there will be no change by rebooting.    tty24 [root@dell.~] ls /tmp22:18
_2tty24 [root@dell.~]22:18
_2also i have rebooted to test it with an older kernel to rule that out.22:19
_2no change.22:19
nowshining_2: what ver. of kubuntu are u using?22:19
_2and the old M$ adedge "reboot will fix anything" just doesn't work in linux22:19
_2dapper22:20
_2i think the camera is dead... that's what i think.   i'm just wondering if there is anything that might revive it.    cat /dev/zero > /dev/sda  maybe....22:21
heinkel_111can someone help me find a bittorrent of the alternate CD installer for Kubuntu 8.04?22:22
nowshining_2: if everything else hange - i think it might be a problem with something else22:22
nowshininghangs*22:22

nowshining_2: gotcha22:23

darkwolfI am using Gutsy Gibbon 7.1022:24
nowshining_2: u can always compile ur own kernel from kernel.org - the latest kernel ver. I had probs with 2.6.25.x but 2.6.24.7 works fine..+ using a vanilla kernel makes it clean of the ubuntu patched one.22:24
_2nowshining why ?22:24
_2nowshining i could mount the damned thing two months ago,  now i can't   same kernel.   i don't think it's software related really!22:25
_2i mean really.22:25
nowshining_2: i was talking about the kernel, u could always check for updates22:26
_2i know you are talking about the kernel.   but my kernel is fine.22:26
brandon_Could some one assist me in changing my home folder to another /home partition that is on my secondary HD?22:26
_2brandon_ mount the partition some place like /mnt   copy or move your files from /home to /mnt  then remount the partition on /home   edit fstab to make it sticky22:28
