beata|desktopI'm having a bit of video mode trouble. Where'd be the best place to ask?01:16
ibou_what is the process NetworkManagerD for ?01:20
beata|desktopMmm anyway, trying to define a video mode for my widescreen monitor. Put the mode into the (hopefully) correct location in xorg.conf, but the X server log doesn't mention seeing it.01:26
navetz__where can I find help with some flash development (actionscript 3)01:35
Ikawebeata|desktop: by the (hopefully) correct location, do you mean under a 'Section "screen"' on a line begining with "mode" ?01:35
Ikaweoops, on a line begining with "modes", rather01:36
beata|desktopOooh.. I had a typo.01:36
Ikawebeata|desktop: type in your xorg.conf? or in your irc message?01:37
beata|desktopIn my conf. I had the modeline defined in the "monitor" section, and typo'd the name in the "screen" section.01:38
zabbadappsebastian: in the openoffice menu, select File->Wizards->Install new dictionaries ... then follow instructions and select Swedish ... when done, select in the menu Tools->Language->For all text->more...->Default languages for document ... and you should find Swedish (may appear already in language menu)01:39
beata|desktopNow it should work. But before I restart, how might I go about forbidding a predefined mode? As in, I don't list it in xorg.conf but it shows in the RandR applet and it isn't compatible with my display.01:40

Dr_willisive not seen a way to 'convert' ntfs to ext3.. :) one can deleta a partition and remake it as ext302:34
Dr_willisbut thats not really converting.02:34
Kevin___Hi, I'm looking to download Kubuntu, and I noticed that on the download page, there's Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and Kubuntu 8.04 (KDE 4 Remix). Could somebody explain the difference please?02:36
DarthFrogDr_willis_: You don't have to delete the partition, you can just mkfs on the existing NTFS partition.02:37
jalsDr_willis: yeah guess that's what i mean02:37
jalswill it make any difference?02:37
DarthFrogKevin___: The remix has KDE4, the other has KDE 3.5.902:37

IkaweCostaRicanQuaker: I mean, when you try to start firefox, and it doesn't start, are you getting any error message? Or does nothing happen at all?02:40
Ikawejals: well, ext3 has been around a lot longer in Linux than has ntfs, so I would put more faith in it in that regard.02:42
Ikawejals: if you google "ntfs vs ext3"  you'll find a lot of information02:44
Dr_willisDarthFrog,  Hmm.. something seems wrong about formating  somthing fdisk says is a ntfs, as a ext3... :)02:45
jalsIkawe: actually the reason i thought to mention it is cos i just found this: http://www.ubergeek.org.uk/cpu_usage.png02:45

flaccidi doubt that is accurate02:47
IkaweDr_willis: you would certainly lose all the information on it. But there's nothing wrong with that02:47
Dr_willisIkawe,  then why have partition types at all?02:47
Ikaweno, I've misunderstood. He would change the partition type to ext3. It's just that he wouldnt delete the partition, just change the type of it.02:48
Dr_willisOk.. that makes more sence then. I forgot that you can just 'change the type' :)02:48
Dr_willisI just am so used to doing 'd' to delete, n, t ,  in fdisk.. i never even though about just changing the type.02:49
Dr_willisOf course in most cases the whold drive is 1 ntfs, and i need to delete to make 2 partitions for linux. swap and /02:49
Dr_willisold habbits i guess.02:49
IkaweDr_willis: actually, I guess I don't understand. What is the relationship between a partition type and the filesystem type that goes on that partition02:53

cyberponixI need some help making the changes I made in konsole, stay... i know I need to be root but, I am unsure how02:55
flaccidcyberponix: changes?02:55
cyberponixyes my wifi set up02:55
flaccidcyberponix: wi fi is controlled by knetworkmanager02:56
cyberponixie sudo -i -H (then, as root) echo ath_pci>>/etc/modules02:56
flaccidcyberponix: oh. that command only needs to be run once unless something is removing ath_pci from /etc/modules after02:57
flaccidit already does 'stay'02:57
cyberponixwell I had to restart my comp, when I did my wifi no longer worked so I went through and re did everyeverytimething I do,t want to have to do that02:58
flaccidyou probably have not configured it correctly and something is overriding02:59
Ikawethe command: echo ath_pci>>/etc/modules, is writing "ath_pci" to the end of the file /etc/modules, so unless something is changing the file, which seems unlikely, it should still be in there.02:59
Ikaweyou could read the /etc/modules file and see if "ath_pci" is in there to be sure.02:59
cyberponixI get a "Permission denied"02:59
Ikawewhen writing to the file, or attempting to read it?03:00
cyberponixsudo -i -H (then, as root) echo ath_pci>>/etc/modules, when I type that03:00
flaccidcyberponix: you only need cat /etc/modules to read it. the perms should be -rw-r--r-- owned by root03:01
cyberponixright so how do I go root in konsole03:01
flaccidcyberponix: you don't need to in this case. its readable by all users.03:02

kwtmIf we want to use Compiz in Kubuntu, do we install the package "compiz" (which is not installed by default)?  Or do we only need to install "compiz-kde" (which *is* installed by default)?  I can't seem to get any Compiz effects with the default config.15:24
flaccidJabop: i recall more than once, perhaps it was in other channels too15:25
flaccidanyway this isn't going to find you someone to help you with your problem15:25
JabopRight. I asked in Kubuntu and KDE, both logical areas of interest for this sort of question.15:25
flaccid!compiz | kwtm15:26

Chrysalisflaccid: i actually had the same problem as user1 and the problem was the the user dir was owned by root, not sure how it happened but remaking with adduser (i think) fixed it15:26

flaccidJabop: stop repeating and maybe i will stop 'chiming'15:28
kwtmflaccid: Thanks for the help.  On a somewhat related note: I copied over several of my config files from my old Kubuntu installation (7.04), and now I no loinger have "Desktop Effects" on my system settings.  Is there a particular config file (like .kde/share/config/ksystemsettingsrc or something) that I would modify (or restore) to bring back the Desktop Effects icon?15:28
flaccidChrysalis: you probably didn't add the user correctly so it had a homedir or something15:28
JabopI know that you don't know how to solve it, so I don't need to hear from you.15:28

kwtmflaccid: You said "System Settings -> Desktop Effects" (which I saw before).  But under System Settings, I no longer have the Desktop Effects, just ... you know, Printers, Accessibility, Network, etc.15:30
flaccidChrysalis: oh thats a different situation. that file would have a lock on it from current session etc. anyway doesn't amtter15:30
bazhangJabop, what was the kubuntu/ubuntu issue15:30
Jabopkvpnc failing auth after an X restart.15:31
flaccidkwtm: thats kde4 only15:31
Chrysalisflaccid: yes, 'couldnt get a lock' or something like that was the actual error i think15:31
flaccidChrysalis: yep15:31
bazhangJabop, how did you get it going? can you do so again? might this be a bug-->ie have you looked on launchpad15:31
Jabopbazhang: I can successfully connect to my vpn after a restart. It will work flawlessly up until X is restarted - then once logged back in, the auth fails. There are no other instances of kvpnc running.15:32
flaccidkde3 does not have desktop effects but you can try the experimental desktop-effects-kde pkg/binary15:33
kwtmflaccid: Oh.  And, sorry, I said that "you said" but actually that was ubotu.  Thanks anyway.15:33
flaccidnp15:33
bazhangJabop, right; what about the questions I just asked15:33
Jabopbazhang: I got it going by configuring the options properly. I ran the program. It works. If I need to connect again I have to completely restart. Yes.15:34
flaccidJabop: also did you check the log on the vpn server. that should verify if its a wrong key etc.15:34
JabopIt is easily resolvable with a restart but I just dont think that is the best option.15:34
bazhangJabop, it is a bug on launchpad then? if not you might wish to file one to make it better app15:34
flaccid!bugs | Jabop15:34

JabopI suppose I could do so bazhang. flaccid - ms-chap fails auth, there isn't much info on the web about it, so I figured I'd ask here15:35
bazhangJabop, when you say restart you mean restart the service or the computer15:35
JabopThe whole system15:35
bazhangoh15:35
flaccidi would start by submitting a bug with as much detail log the log entry as possible. if it keeps the config for the vpn connection and fails on a re-connect then that sounds like a bug to me15:36
bazhangJabop, in future you may also consider asking in #ubuntu as there are a ton of helpers there as well.15:36
JabopI figured I would get directed here as it is a KDE app15:37
flacciddoubt #ubuntu will won't to help with a k app15:37

bazhangJabop, the underlying system is the same15:37
bazhangflaccid, because we know you :)15:37
flaccidyes bazhang but its a k application15:38
bazhangvpn is vpn though15:38
flaccidwell every single time i've gone to #ubuntu and asked a question i never get a response and if i do its a waste of time15:38

JabopWhat could be a bug in kubuntu may not be a bug in ubuntu :o15:39
bazhangnever can tell :)15:39
bazhangplenty of kde users in there as well15:39
flaccidanyway point is submitting a bug report is going to help more than randomly asking here. i know this because not many people use kvpnc etc.15:40

jorgiai have installed 8.04 as a way to (hopefully) get away from Windows entirely...but as this is entirely new to me, there are a number of issues i need to resolve19:42
jorgiathe first one i think being that i cannot access the NTFS external hard drive  (USB) that i was using as backup19:43
dwidmann!ntfs19:43
ubottuTo view your Windows/Mac partitions see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions - For NTFS write access, see /msg ubottu NTFS-3g or /msg ubottu FUSE19:43
jajabinkeryou have to mount that manually19:44

tester_ikonia, i'm following the instructions at http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=757353&highlight=apr_dbd_mysql.so to fix the problem22:31
tim_Foxlll: I'v sometimes found that kde networking fights the command line networking tools22:31
ikoniatester_: that thread is the wrong way to go about this22:31
tim_FoxIII: without a pc with wireless I'm afraid I cant be much help22:31
ikoniatester_: having 2 installs on your system in different locations is not wise22:32
tester_ikonia, *phew* whats the right way?22:32
ahmosfoxlll: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25799/22:32
FoxIIItim_, really? hmm. I don't know about using the command line wireless tools. I'm learning the networking bit as I go along. lol22:32
ikoniatester_: well as each apache apr setup is in a seperate package it should be a reasonably straight forward process to either a.) make a bug request to have it updated/included b.) download the deb source yourself, update the one line --with-apr-util and submit it for a rebuild, in which case your package manager is %100 correct then22:33
ahmosFoxlll: did u see the link? http://paste.ubuntu.com/25799/22:33
FoxIIIahmos, yes. Just seeing if it will help me. lol22:33
tester_ikonia, I'm going to need to follow option b it sounds like.  However, I didnt' quite follow your instructions there.  you said update the one line.  What did you mean by that?22:34
ikoniatester_: in the ubuntu source packages there are build options, which are in essense configure option, so you need to add that line to the build / configure options, then rebuild the package22:34
tester_ikonia, where am I able to download that source at?22:35
ikoniatester_: if you join #motu you may find the apache package maintainer team members and they may help you/do it for you/etc22:35
ikoniatester_: ubuntu-motu sorry22:35
ikoniatester_: but they will require a bug/update request22:35
tester_ikonia, thank you.  i'll see if i can find it22:35
FoxIIIahmos, Have a look here and see if any of this is useful to you: http://uk.blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-kLgobDE_cqVv1JH8Yrs5u0AOygiyr1iiv0erhcaU_BKG?p=522:36
ahmosok and thank's alot22:36
ahmos;)22:36
ikoniatester_: your approach will pretty much break your package managers ability to control/update/manage any of your web based applications, that approach is prety flawed22:36
FoxIIIahmos, It may not help much, but it's the best I can come up with.22:37
tester_ikonia, forgive me, your saying that if I do the option b (which you just listed), that I'll be causing myself problems?22:37
ikoniano22:37
FoxIIIcoon, you still here?22:37
ikoniaI'm saying if you follow that forum post you'll cause yourself a lot of problems22:37
tester_ikonia, ah the two different apache installs heh, yeah i didn't realzie that would do that, thank you for telling me22:38
coonyeah22:38
ikoniatester_: that forum post is a badly written post, and quite ill advised22:38
tester_ikonia, lol.  thanks for straightening me out.22:39
FoxIIIcoon, kewl :) Thanks for the patience. You are using a sound blaster, yes?22:39
ikoniatester_: not a problem, a word for the future don't look to fix things "now" look to fix things properly22:40
coonyeah audigy se22:40
ikoniatester_: I promise you it will save you time and effort in the medium/long term22:40
tester_ikonia, It wasn't a matter of fixing it now vs properly to me, I'd been searching for hours trying to find the right solution22:40
coonim using alsa22:40
FoxIIIcoon, There does seem to be a problem with the audigy se and the microphone, but there is a howto here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=74984722:43

KNamHi, I'm new to Kubuntu (and KDE in general), and I was wondering if I could get some help?22:56
Myrttiask and you shall receive22:57
KNamThanks. First, how can I connect to wireless Internet?22:57
KNamI installed Kubuntu on my laptop, and it can't detect any wireless networks.22:57
Dr_willisgot the wireless card working first? is the top question.22:59
Dr_willis!wireless22:59

ubottuYou have lag, I don't have lag22:59
KNamWireless works on my Windows partition and worked on Ubuntu, but doesn't work on Kubuntu for some reason.23:01
Dr_williswell that it worked on Ubuntu is a VERY VERY good sign.23:02
Dr_willisYa just got to figure out the wireless network tool interface...  (and i dont use wireless much, so cant help much)23:02
KNamAlright.23:03

tester_ikonia, the folks in ubuntu-motu aren't responding.  I downloaded the aprutil1 source package, and I found the file your refering to, but I'm not sure what changes to make, would you mind helping me?23:16
ikoniatester_: oooh, errr I guess I can take a look, I'm not far from bed though23:17
tester_tester, wow its like 4 pm here, what time is it there?23:17
tester_ikonia, lol, i wrote tester... i meant you heh23:18
tester_You said to edit the --with-apr-util line.  I was unable to find one of those.  but i did find a --with-apr line.23:18
tester_ikonia, and I'm not quite sure what i'm supposed to do to edit it.23:19
tester_ikonia, ie what I'm supposed to add to the line23:19
ikoniatester_: I've not got a source deb at hand to view the files, but can you find the line that does the configure ?23:19
tester_ikonia, yes i can23:19
tester_ikonia, its two lines.  similiar to wha tyou said23:20
ikoniatester_: ahh good, (again memory isn't great) add the configure line you need23:20
ikoniatester_: ahhh I knew I had info somewhere23:21

tester_ikonia, awesome i'm gonna look at it.  i just posted the lines in that pastebin23:22
ikoniatester_: ahh23:22
ikoniatester_: that link should guide you through it, I've used it as a refresher many times23:22
ikoniait's good23:22
tester_ikonia, i cna't thank you enough.  i was getting frustrated with ubuntu on this one.23:22
tester_ikonia, first i tried mod-auth-mysql, then i was told it was obsolete, so I tried authn_dbd... and then these problems, i've been at it for days23:23
ikoniatester_: keep with it23:24
ikoniatester_: first time you do things is always a pain/hard23:24
tester_ikonia, i hear yah.  our system admin is gone for good, and its fallen to me, a really junior programmer to figure out upgrading the server from apache 1.13 to 2.2+23:24
ikoniatester_: thats not fun, I assure you. I can give you some notes on that if you want, I've done it a few times, just finished one with custom apache modules23:25
tester_ikonia, I'm trying hard to just get it working in a dev status for testing everything, but trying to get the password protected stuff to work now that mod-auth-mysql is now no longer handled is killing me23:26
tester_ikonia, its prompting for a username now though, so that was a huge improvement heh23:26
ikoniatester_: follow the guide, get help from motu, there are some motu guys in here too, and you'll be fine23:26
tester_ikonia, thank you.23:27
mkargar I reinstall nvidia driver, but, since of restart system, kdm logen manager not runned and it return to commond line and showing this error:http://paste.ubuntu.com/25804/23:31
ImLizhello all, I'm having what I think is a major problem w/kubuntu on my desktop... when it started loading, the black screen showed up with "/var/log/message has multiple claimed blocks"23:32
ImLiztold me to run "fsck" in maintanance mode, which I think I did and at the end of it all this msg showed up "Segmentation violation at Oxb7f51060 Sleeping for 30 seconds"23:33
Myrttinini everyone23:34
ImLizdo I have to reinstall kubuntu???? or is there a way to fix this????23:34
Dr_willisI would boot a live cd and fsck the drive/partitions first ImLiz23:37
Dr_willisand take some  sedatives.. :)23:37
zabbadappwhat is the best vnc client? something must be better than krdc (kubuntu 8.04 kde3)? it crashes about once every 10 times i reconnect and it dies efter suspend or if the server is rebooted ... it should reconnect imho .. or atleast remember the last connection-ip so I don't have to hunt for it in the drop down every time23:37
Dr_willisit is sounding like some sort of possible memory issue.  Not sure what else segmentation violation would mean.23:38
ImLizDr_willis: How would I run fsck on the drive/partitions???23:38
Dr_williszabbadapp,  i tend to just use the 'vnc4server' and client.23:38
Dr_willis!fsck23:38
ubottufsck is the FileSystem ChecKer, which runs automatically when you boot if you didn't shutdown cleanly. Type "man fsck" for information on running it manually. The command "sudo shutdown -F -r now" will force a reboot and a filesystem check; "sudo touch /fastboot" will skip a filesystem check at next reboot23:38
Dr_willisImLiz,  boot live cd. get to a root shell, fsck /dev/DEVICENAME23:38
Dr_willisi would also google for that last error message ya got to see what else may be wrong.23:39
ImLizthx Dr_willis, sounds like it's going to be a long search lol23:40
zabbadappDr_willis: can it reconnect after suspend to ram?23:40
claushallo, bin zum ersten mal im irc, kann mir wer mal kurz antworten....vielen dank!23:42
Dr_williszabbadapp,  i doubt if any vnc clients can do that. of course ya can just rerun the client and reconnect.23:45
