athena18although we may be on opposite sides in terms of day to day usage...or maybe not. Ive forgotten quite a lot of command line stuff i knew. I still have a book on UNIX that would work find that is based on command line04:14
athena18(intelikey) hello am i talking to you Q04:15
intelikeyyep04:15
DarthFrogathena18: No, just the nick, no parentheses or brackets.04:16
DarthFrogFer instance, type "Darth" and hit tab. :-)04:17
intelikeywith out the quotes04:17
DarthFrogOnce the name is filled in, type your brilliancy. :-)04:17
mr---t-or type d and hit tab until darthfrog comes up and so on...04:18
DarthFrogOh yeah, as intelikey points out, no quotes either.04:18
K350Hi!:) I'm new to Linux and Kubuntu. I would like to know how I can make a progrma autostart at system startup?04:18
DarthFrogK350: This isn't really going to help you, but put it in the file /etc/rc.local.04:19
DarthFrogrc.local is the Unix equivalent of autoexec.bat.04:19
K350Aha, thank you very much for that information!:)04:20
DarthFrogK350: Is this program a system-wide one or a personal one that you want executed as you login to KDE?  the answers are different.04:21
K350uh...it's Conky04:24
DarthFrogDo you mean Konqueror?04:24
K350No, Conky conky.sourceforge.net04:24
DarthFrogIf so, then put it in /home/K350/.kde/Autostart04:25
K350it's a progrma that shows system information04:25
DarthFrogSorry, don't know conky.04:25
DarthFrogAh.  Autostart, then.04:25
K350aha..okay..I'll try...04:26
flaccidgood ol conky :o04:27
K350I guess I've to make a shortcut then....04:28
DarthFrogNope.04:28
K350no?04:28
DarthFrogPut a script that launches it in the Autostart directory.04:29
K350err..should I move it form´/usr/bin to autostart?04:29
DarthFrogi.e a "bat" file. :-)04:29
DarthFrogNO!!!!04:29
K350aaaah04:29
K350okay a small bash scritp or something...04:29
DarthFrogExactly.04:29
K350or uh..bash script right?04:29
DarthFrogCorrectomundo.04:29
K350ooookay!04:30
K350I'll try...04:30
flaccid!autostart04:30
ubottuTo make programs autostart with your KDE session, you can make a link to it in ~/.kde/Autostart. The package 'kcontrol-autostart' makes a kcontrol item for handling items in that directory. For a complete guide, see http://jucato.org/kde/kde-autostart.html04:30
DarthFrogYeah, that works too.  Much the same as a shortcut. :-)04:30
DarthFrogProbably simpler, too. :-)04:31
* DarthFrog rarely goes for the simple solution. Things should be challenging! 04:31
DarthFrog:-)04:31
* DarthFrog is challenged everyday.04:31
flaccidin kde4 there is an Autostart frontend in system settings which is nice.04:33
DarthFrogThere is?  W00t!04:34
flaccidyeah its in Advanced tab04:34
tuxwulfOk ... how does it fit together: KDE3, KDE4, plasma. What is which?04:34
DarthFrogDoes it automatically make the symlinks via drag 'n drop?04:34
flaccidkde3 is kde3, kde4 is kde4 and plasma is part of kde404:34
K350DarthFrog: Thanks a lot. it works great now!:)04:35
DarthFrogPlasma is a re-think of the desktop idiom.04:35
tuxwulfflaccid > So, is it possible to run KDE4 with something other than plasma?04:35
DarthFrogK350: Yer welcom, bud.04:35
tuxwulfDarthFrog: ... what does 'desktop idiom' mean?04:35
DarthFrogtuxwulf: Probably not yet.04:35
kajmy Xserver is not good, the screen looks like the horizontal ctrl is out of range..like on the old analog tvs fro the 60-70s04:35
flaccidtuxwulf: did you ask this yesterday? the answer is no, but you don't have to run plasma. you could kill it and just run kicker or something so in theory its kind of a yes04:36
DarthFrogtuxwulf: As OS/2, Win95 _ad nauseum_, Mac OS and KDE3 do it.04:36
flaccidDarthFrog: no drag/drop but 'add program' button04:36
tuxwulfflaccid > no, I did not ask this yesterday, but yesterday I did discuss something else, raising these questions04:37
DarthFrogThat works.  Drag 'n drop might be more elegant|intuitive|familiar.  :-)04:37
flaccidtuxwulf: yeah sounded familiar... you ask it a little bit different but yeah thats the situation. its flexible enough04:37
flaccidDarthFrog: you could raise a feature request04:37
DarthFrogflaccid: AFAIK, there is no kicker in KDE4.  He'd have to run the KDE3 kicker.04:38
kajguess the ati proprietary driver was a mistake but I couldn't remember which driver was being used as the 'default restricted'04:38
flaccidDarthFrog: correct04:38
DarthFrogflaccid: I don't care enough. :-)  It was just an idle thought.04:38
tuxwulfflaccid > Please allow the simpleton that is me to check the following against your expertise: Plasma runs on KDE, KDE runs on X, X runs on linux. Would that be a correct statement?04:38
intelikeykaj all "restricted" are proprietary04:38
GithzeraiDarthFrog: No kicker, but plasma-panel is there ;)04:38
DarthFrogtuxwulf: Corrrect.04:39
flaccidtuxwulf: pretty much. in essence plasma is just another application04:39
flaccidthere is a few more layers there but you got the ordering correct04:39
tuxwulfWhooopeee! Thanks!04:39
DarthFrogGithzerai: I'm not yet in love with plasma-panel yet.  It isn't as configurable as I liked in kicker. :-)04:39
intelikeyDarthFrog that "might" come with time...04:40
kajwell intelikey  the latest and greatest upgrade did in my happy little setup ...now i have no screen, samba or google earth ...the kubuntu dev guys ought to be more careful before trey this crap out on us trusting souls04:41
DarthFrogtuxwulf: Linux runs the hardware.  X  is the graphical presentation system.  KDE is the operating environment (or desktop, if you prefer) that make X usable.  Plasma is a way of interacting with KDE.04:41
intelikeycan you use things like    [ some test ]  in case loops as  identifiers )  ?04:41
DarthFrogKDE4, that is.04:41
flaccidkaj: welcome to free software :) perhaps we can help to fix04:41
DarthFrogintelikey: Well, it has to let me re-order the icons, resize the panel, at a start. :-)04:41
DarthFrogi.e. let me get it back to the way I had kicker.04:42
Dr_willisand Plasmids are those weird powerups in BioShock. :)04:42

intelikeydoes kde still write in /root ?05:09
intelikeyor have they fixed that yet ?05:10
=== kasuyi is now known as kasuyi_
Dr_willisive never noticed it doing writing in /root05:11
intelikeyrm /root -r and restart it  :)05:13
DarthFrogWhy would that be a problem?05:13
Dr_willisI keep my porn in /root :) where it belongs..05:14
intelikeycause /root is root's default home.  user space apps should not be accessing it.05:14
intelikeybut beyond that,  even if you move root out of /root it still uses /root   "and if"05:14
DarthFrogbut does it write in it, other than recreate it after you've removed it?05:14
intelikeythough no one would dare...    you login to kde as root then it stores all roots settings in /root reguardless of where root lives.05:15
intelikeyimo  that's wac05:15
DarthFrogI may be confused but you seem to be battling your way upstream against the Unix way stream.05:15
flaccidapps will access /root when apps run under root mode05:15
intelikeyDarthFrog gdm doesn't do that  why does kdm ?05:16
intelikeyflaccid they shouldn't if root doesn't live there.05:16
intelikeyonly kde is hard coded to use /root   gnome isn't05:16
intelikeyblackbox isn't05:16
intelikeyfluxbox isn't05:17
intelikeyneed i go on.... ?05:17
DarthFrogBut, but ... /root is the Unix way. :-)05:17
intelikeyDarthFrog linux is not unix05:17
DarthFrogJust as /home is the user data directory.05:17
dennisterhey channel, anyone ever see black smoke coming out of a cpu/heatsink combo before?05:17
intelikeyDarthFrog not my users05:17
Dr_willisdennister,  only when i spilt the soda in the case05:18
dennisterheheh...i knew about cpus overheating, but i'd never seen it before05:18
flaccidintelikey: um, example krusader root mode...05:18
DarthFrogintelikey: Linux is a pretty damn good Unix.05:18
flaccidthus why the style looks different as it uses root's profile05:18
intelikeyflaccid you missed the point.05:18
DarthFrogdennister: That's the magic smoke.  If you let it out, the hardware doesn't work any more.05:18
intelikeymove root.  let root live in say  /new_dir  and it still uses /root   not /new_dir05:19
DarthFrogintelikey: So what?05:19
intelikeyDarthFrog so that is M$ mentality.05:19
flaccidintelikey: what is your point?05:20
DarthFrogIf you're that fussed, "sudo chmod 700 /root.05:20
intelikeyDarthFrog just do it the way we say.   you don't need to control your computer let the programers do it for you...  it "just works"05:20
Dr_willis /me thinks this ranting is getting dull.05:20
flaccidyeah well user homes are readable by other users by default so a 700 can be handy05:21
intelikeyDarthFrog perms make no diff   and besides i keep root's home  chmod'd 000005:21
dennisternow i'm trying to find out why...background: ms-6309 mobo, p3-733 MHz cpu, when turned the power would shut off almost immediately, so I cleaned heatsink/fan, put some more thermal grease on cpu, and it would still shut down05:21
Dr_willisdennister,  a few years back - there was a bunch of counterfit capaciters being sold and put on motherboards.    Or it could just be old age. :)05:22
dennisterso i thought: power supply, replaced it with my very good Enermax EG301P (more pwoer than needed, but tested working beautifully on more demanding systems), turned it on, and it stayed on all right, with black smoke05:22
intelikeydr_willis dull indeed.    i only asked if they had fixed/changed it in the hardy release05:23
DarthFrogintelikey: Have you filed a bug report?  It may be a "feature".05:23
Dr_willisyep - dull.05:23
dennisterDr_willis: yes, I heard of that, but the more powerful ps wouldn't have caused it to overheat, would it?05:23
DarthFrogdennister: No.05:24
Dr_willisdennister,  Hmm... No idea.. could be  it was the final straw.05:24
dennisterdidn't think so...k, that's been eliminated as cause05:24
Dr_williscould be all the twiddling around with it made somthing else finally die.05:24
intelikeyflaccid my point. that kde and kdm in particular are hard coded to write in /root  reguardless of where root actually lives. or who logs in.05:24
intelikeyDarthFrog the kde crew don't consider it a bug,  they did it on purpose.05:24
DarthFrogdennister: A more powerful ps would be _capable_ of delivering more power, if the circuitry needed it.  If you have a short circuit, well all bets are off.05:24
dennisterDarthFrog: ok, short circuit from what?05:25
dennisteron the mobo?05:25
DarthFrogintelikey: Then it's unlikely that behaviour will be changed.05:25

DarthFrogWhat with capacitive coupling and quantum tunnelling and all that. :-)05:26
intelikeyDarthFrog one can only hope that they at least make it dynamic rather than hard coded05:26

DarthFrogSo the deprecation is because fish is KDE only?05:43
flaccidwell its not technically deprecated but ssh/sftp is more standard. only kde can do fish client (plus 2 other implementations)05:44

flaccidor just sftp on every OS. you can use fish still of course, im sure it will continue to be supported and the kio slave is probably pretty damn stable. its a simple protocol anyway which is good05:47
DarthFrogNot too mention the convenience.05:48
flaccidwhy is it more convenient than sftp?05:48
DarthFrogWhich is the point.05:48
DarthFrogCuz it's a KIO-slave.  Drag 'n drop in Konq.05:48

flaccidyes gnome is a gui?05:53
dennisterhmmm...fired it all up , with no connectors or cards...seemed fine...started connecting one by one (different vc this time; only change), still all fine...no smoke...took heatsink combo apart...zero signs of scorching or damage05:54
DarthFrogflaccid: OK.  A general solution does have its uses, agreed.  But when a localised solution, such as KIO_slaves, work wonderfully when one is in that local environment, I'd rather use the superior local solution.  Unless the general solution works equally as well in  the local situation.05:55
DarthFrog[The_Oracle]: This is the wrong place to ask about GNOME.  Go to #ubuntu for that.05:55
flaccidDarthFrog: give sftp a try in konq, its much the same behaviour05:55
dennisterbut it's not booting into bios05:55
[The_Oracle]I was in KDE05:55
dennisterflaccid: i finally did get samba to work with the xp home floppy, btw :-) and it does need the wins server enabled on the samba server05:57
dennisteroops...not floppy, laptop05:57
DarthFrogdennister: Not booting into BIOS?  You have an ... unusual definition of fine.05:57
flacciddennister: nah you do not require wins but ok05:57
dennisterflaccid: well I listened to you, and didn't enable it, but when I finally did enable wins server, it worked05:58
DarthFrogdennister: Really?  Well, we all know Windows networking is bizarre.05:59
flacciddennister: thats because you have no local dns server and normal nmb resolution was probably not working but could of been fixed05:59
DarthFrogI prefer to keep my bizarre explanation. :-)05:59
flaccidnmbd out of box does nmb broadcast for resolution without the need for a wins or dns server05:59
dennisterDarthFrog: ordinarily I would suspect mobo is dead when i can't get into bios...and i still think this mobo might be, but I'm still cheerful06:00
flaccidi run 1 local dns server and no wins server. so resolution here is done primarily with dns only06:00
dunasIs there a way to merge the contents of two folders with the same name in Kubuntu 8.04?06:00
[The_Oracle]can we run Compiz under a VM? it never offers me nvidia drivers06:00
flacciddennister: i can't even remember your problem etc. heh06:00
dunasDolphin pretty perpetually wants to overwrite.06:00
DarthFrogdennister: Would you not get the same result from a fried CPU?06:00
dennisterflaccid: nmbd? i usually use the dns servers in the routers, with the ISP's dns servers also mentioned06:01
DarthFrogdunas: Rename one of the folders first.06:01
flacciddennister: yes. this is for resolution of LAN clients, not hosts on the internet...06:01
flaccidLAN != WAN06:01
dennisterDarthFrog: of course...u must think i'm totally stupid, lol...that's what i'll be determining next: cpu dead or mobo dead?06:02
dennisterand that's a question i can determine with some normal swapping06:02
asobiever since i got ff3 beta 4, my dictionary extension no longer works06:02
DarthFrogdennister: No, I don't think you're stupid.  I've had blinkers on myself. :-)06:02
asobishould it reside in the extensions folder?06:03
karthikhello every one i want to know how to change KDE to GNOME06:03
flaccid!puregnome06:03
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE packages and have a default !Ubuntu system follow the instructions here << http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome >>06:03
dennisteras I said, i'm lucky i have so many other mobos and cpus here for this kind of testing...and that's a big part of what I do...test to see if the stuff works06:03
DarthFrogdennister: I'd be careful about swapping.  Putting a good CPU into a fried mobo is a good way to fry the CPU.06:03
asobialso, klipper no longer works either :/06:03
dennisterDarthFrog: that's why i'll be using possibly-dead cpus first :-) i have 3 here that didn't work with another mobo (but then I eneded up junking the mobo itself)06:04
DarthFrogdennister: I'll leave things in your obviously capable hands. :-)06:05
dennisteroh shoot...they're amd cpus...will risk 1 p3 then06:05
dennisteri've got 606:06
DarthFrogdennister: Well, if it were me, I'd put your CPU into a known good mobo, rather than the converse.06:06
dunasDarthFrog: That's not really helping, sadly. Sorry. The problem is, I'm trying to move a Materials folder from a downloaded file to my Counter-Strike Source file, so that the new files enter the Materials Folder but the new folder doesn't completely overwrite the old, and there's a lot of files to move.06:06
purpleposeidonIs there a list anywhere of super-compatible hardware? I want to build a new computer.06:07
dennisterDarthFrog: good idea...will take ur advice06:07
DarthFrogdunas: You're wanting to merge the contents of the files?06:07
DarthFrogdunas: Or add the files to a directory?06:08

dunasDarthFrog: Merge the contents, yes.06:09
dennisterscratch that...can't because it looks like all my p3 mobos are slot 1 style...don't have any other p3 mobos with the socket 37006:09
purpleposeidonMore intelligent then anybody else in here. >_>   <_<    o_o   :P06:09
DarthFrogdunas: Good luck.  i know of no other way to do that than file by file manually.06:09
DarthFrogTho' I'm sure there are other solutions.06:09
dennisterat least the slot 1 mobos were probably from before the bad-capacitor era, heheheh06:10
DarthFrogdennister: I would suspect that slot 1 caps would be drying out by now. :-)06:10
dennistercaps? they dry out?06:11
DarthFrogdunas: "cat file1 file2 > file3" would work.06:11
DarthFrogdennister: Yep.  Takes a while, fortunately.06:11
DarthFrogAnd depends upon the cap technology employed, of course.  Paper caps don't dry out.06:12
dunasDarthFrog: Through the terminal, you mean?06:12
dennisteri've got an asus p2 board here, with original cpu...still going strong06:12

dunasDarthFrog: Still plenty of work for something Windows can do automatically, mind you. ;) I'll keep looking for a solution that's a little faster, just because it's a lot of files and even then that'd take a lot of time.06:14
DarthFrogflaccid: But, but,... it's fun!  :-)06:14
dennisteri reacently was given an intel dual slot1 p3 server board :-)06:14

TrAndyHi all, this seems nasty on HH. 1.Boot into recovery mode; 2.lounch KDE3 and do nothing; 3.then normally reboot into 8.04 2.6.24-19-generic. Result is network down (must restart dbus to get it back) and if I connect a USB device it will be no more automounted (lsusb lists them correctly). Any clue where to look in the boot process to fix this?22:38
