[00:12] According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDS-Intrepid/Report/Kernel there are plans to use grub2 for intrepid, how likely is this to actually happen? I didn't think grub2 was that mature yet [00:18] As far as I know it's not [00:19] and about that dri2 thing you posted earlier, it's no big deal. DRI2 is not ready. [00:49] Error inserting iwl4965 (/lib/modules/2.6.26-3-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl4965.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) any idea any one ? [00:50] I have an extra partition to install Intrepid. How likely is "total system failure?" [00:50] Not that I don't back things up as it is. [00:52] papabean: what do you mean total system failure? like the whole drive losing it's partitioning or just the intrepid partition going down / breaking? [00:53] I was reading the topic and that sprang to mind. But, in fairness, the whole drive? Unlikely, I imagine. Correct? [00:53] papabean: ya [00:53] papabean, Try to keep Grub under Hardy's control, tho :p [00:53] papabean: I guess you will have lots of bugs in the actual os which are going to be annoying [00:54] If grub fails, would an install/rescue cd be sufficient to bring it back? Or at least to get back into the Hardy partition and reinstall the boot loader? [00:55] td123: How is that different from running Linux in general? ;) [00:55] In Ubuntu stable, you'll get such bugs if you active backports/proposed, only. [00:55] papabean: well, imagine a normal distro, and then multiply the annoying bugs by some k greater than 10 :P [00:56] I once built an LFS all the way to X. I'm comfortable with bugs. :) [00:56] Error inserting iwl4965 (/lib/modules/2.6.26-3-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl4965.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg) any idea any one ? [00:58] papabean: congrats, I personally tried that but I got sick of typing/waiting (I only had 1 machine to do it on) [00:59] td123: Tried it again recently on a laptop and that was utter fail. That's what led me to Ubuntu. [01:00] So, I'd like to "help shape Ubuntu" and am willing to give up stability for the cause. [01:01] Is there an installer for intrepid? Didn't see it on the wiki page? Or is it a matter of installing 8.04 and dist-upgrade? [01:03] You can download an alternate installation ISO or install 8.04 and put up a update-manager -d [01:08] Where would I find an alternate install ISO for Intrepid? [01:08] Hold that thought. New quassel build is done. brb. [01:10] ok. back. [01:11] I want to use pygtk for development, but I'm having trouble getting it installed. Are there instructions anywhere? [01:12] ARgh, iwl3945 sucks. [01:12] Toggling rfkill should NOT permanently disable the interrupt of the wifi card! [01:12] I have to MANUALLY reload the driver when that happens. [01:12] papabean: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha-2/ [01:12] Thank you. [01:12] DanaG: yay another iwlwifi user :D [01:13] So much for "Intel is better!" [01:13] DanaG: whats the problem ? [01:13] ipw3945 driver never had these issues! [01:13] lol i am using 4965, try that ;P [01:13] DanaG: At least your driver is working [01:13] Try activating the hardware rfkill switch... and see that your network interface disappears after a while. [01:15] I've noticed that you can't have b43 and iwl3945 loaded at the same time. [01:15] Or at least, it used to be so. [01:15] I just get no scan results with no errors ( ath5k ), module loads fine, interface is there, but no scan results and can't connect to anything [01:15] well i don't have a b43 card so i hope it an;t loaded [01:15] Do you have any other wifi cards? X log is at hobbsee.com/tmp [02:53] In what way is it broken? [02:54] goes blank after it starts up [02:54] You end up with a white screen with a pointer? [02:54] as in, after the splash screen [02:54] nope, black [02:54] i can get to vt1 and such, but that gives a blank screen too [02:54] as in, it goes dark, then goes a bit lighter, so i can tell it's switched [02:54] but there's still no image [02:55] Hm. [02:55] That's not a failure mode I'm familiar with. [02:55] do i need a dri2 module? [02:55] that was what i noticed in the logs, but couldn't find the package [02:55] Not unless you'd like to rebuild everything from git. [02:55] not really, no... [02:56] OOooh. [02:56] In what way is it broken? Option "GlxVisuals" "all" [02:56] Argh, whoops. [02:57] I don't suppose adding the GlxVisuals "all" option to your ServerFlags section does anything? [03:00] i've no idea. i'll test it out next boot [03:01] That may well not be the problem, particularly in light of the VT not working, but nouveau's gallium3d only presents a black screen without that option :) [03:02] An alternate way to see this would be to log into failsafe mode; that shouldn't load compiz. Failure there indicates stronger X borkage :) [03:04] Broken console? Do you use vga= anything? [03:04] no, i use standard options [03:04] If so, that'd be why... vesafb has been replaced by uvesafb (google it). [03:04] Aah. [03:04] RAOF: that's a point. i haven't tried that. [03:04] I was getting black with vga= [03:04] RAOF: i just upgraded it a couple of days ago post-Xbreakage, so only discovered it was still dead last night [03:04] and I was getting screwed-up console (big text blobs) without. [03:05] Since GDM comes up, I'd suspect it's a 3d issue, but that might be wrong; it might be an xrandr issue. [03:05] depends how you define 'comes up' [03:05] all i get after usplash is a black screen :) [03:06] Sorry, I thought you were able to log in, then it died. [03:06] no [03:06] That's definitely not a compiz problem :) [03:06] usplash finishes, i get a black screen. [03:06] i can switch to vt1, it goes dark (as in, like the machine is off) for a second or so, then goes back to a black screen. [03:06] What is it that broke GLX for nvidia? [03:06] same from vt1 --> vt7 [03:07] glxinfo just dies (backtrace). [03:07] DanaG: Dunno. WorksForMe [03:09] * RAOF is using Compiz for the first time in a month or two. [03:10] Hobbsee: I don't know what's wrong; your log doesn't seem to indicate a problem. [03:17] Oh yeah, any idea when Nouveau will have support for ACPI suspend? [03:17] Since my 3D is broken with nvidia binaries for the moment... it'd be no loss going to Nouveau and having... no 3D. [03:17] When someone, probably Master Garrett, finishes the work required. [03:18] He's got a prototype nv_bios kernel module that enables suspend (or, more accurately, _resume_) on nv. This doesn't restore the 3D engine, though, so it doesn't work for nouveau. [03:19] http://pastebin.com/f6cab6f73 [03:19] That's the output of glxinfo? Interesting :) [03:20] argh [03:20] lost the error. [03:20] http://pastebin.com/f31055654 [03:20] Ah, right. [03:21] Well... works for me. What driver version? [03:24] You install from apt :) [03:25] nvidia-glx-177 [03:25] Ooh! [03:25] That's news to me. [03:25] Lemme do a manual removal first, for safety. [03:25] Ding! === Double_D is now known as SergeantPony2 [03:28] RAOF: right, so i wasn't misreading it. good [03:43] yay, that fixed it. [03:44] What was the "Ding!" for? [03:44] Anyway, now I have compiz again. Yay! [03:47] The ding was for manually removing the manually installed driver first. [03:48] DanaG: Please tell me the problem you just solved was with t_f_p in radeon? [03:49] Nope. Mine was nvidia breakage. [03:49] :( [03:50] My next laptop likely WILL be ATI, I've decided. I've had my fair share of issues with nvidia, in both Windows and Linux, so even if ATI sucks.... I won't be missing anything. And I like to financially support OSS-friendly companies. [03:51] DanaG: I like intel graphics on laptops, drivers never cause issues. only downside is that they are week, good for battery though [03:53] DanaG: although intel/amd are supposed to come out with cpus that will be able to perform the same tasks as a gpu, thus elimnating the need for gpus, at least the weaker ones.. I would wait for those, they might benefit the battery life a lot, you should look into it [03:54] DanaG: I think they are coming it towards the end of this year/beginning of next [03:59] DanaG: Realize that you will be missing some features like redirected direct rendering until radeon starts using DRI2 [04:18] I don't have those features with nvidia, anyway. [04:18] ANother random thing: Broadcom sucks for Windows, too... they don't release drivers! [04:18] Nvidia does redirected direct rendering, and has done for ages. [04:19] Oh. [04:19] I never noticed. [04:19] Right. Compiz has Just Worked. [04:19] Perhaps that's one of those things that you only notice when it's NOT working. Aah. [04:19] (Or had other glitches, but not the redirected direct rendering kinds). [04:19] For example, running glxgears doesn't do crazy, crazy things under compiz on nivida :) [04:19] Broadcom leaves drivers up to the whims of the OEMs.... so if you want features of newer drivers, you have to take risks with other brand drivers... and sometimes get hard lockups. [04:20] The nvidia drivers have had more advanced features than available in stock X/mesa for some time; however, now X & mesa are catching up, and basically doing it better. [04:32] Hmm, new cubemodel plugin for compiz.... doesn't do anything at all for me. [04:40] kubuntu 8.10 will ship with kde4 and kde3 option to install from repos? [04:41] Dunno about the latter. [04:42] But it certainly ships with kde4 now [04:42] oky thanks. and whic kde4 version should the production release include? [04:43] Whichever is latest. [04:44] when is the cut-off date for that? [04:44] Sometime. I'm not totally sure. [04:45] http://paste.ubuntu.com/26998/ any ideas anone ? [04:45] anyone* [04:47] ... i was trying to compile the kernel ? [04:51] is anyone even alive here? [04:51] whatup dawg [04:52] is there a document detailing features introduced in ibex? [04:53] hmmm ya a list like fedora's would be nice... i usually refer to https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid [04:53] if only ibex would make you real coffee on boot [04:54] thanks vishalrao [04:55] np, also see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UDS-Intrepid/Report/Summary [04:55] also http://www.youtube.com/ubuntudevelopers :) [04:56] i was hoping this would make it, it still might: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/GdmFaceBrowser :) [04:57] another link: http://www.linuxloop.com/news/2008/07/03/top-5-new-features-of-ubuntu-810-interpid-ibex/ [04:59] flaccid: not yet, i doubt [04:59] those tend to be stuff that's proposed to happen [05:02] so, is there a planned feature list wiki similar to this for ubuntu? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/10/FeatureList [05:02] coolio [05:02] um does Kubuntu team have any docs like this? === kalpik_ is now known as kalpik [05:08] vishalrao: that would be the blueprints which you found above [05:09] flaccid: if you look at that page, you'll note there are some kubuntu ones there [05:10] Hobbsee: which one sorry? [05:10] Hobbsee: thanks [05:10] https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid === Double_D is now known as SergeantPony2 [05:13] hmm. i think there needs to be general goals set in terms of whats trying to be achieved with the new release from a high level [05:21] why? [05:22] In most cases, that's upstream's job. [05:22] We don't actually do a lot of coding here :) [05:22] exactly [05:23] its basic project management for a start. in order to solve problems you also need to identify them [05:23] * Hobbsee notes that the paid staff have plenty of blueprints there. [05:24] where are they? [05:24] ? [05:24] When I try run "sudo modprobe ath5k mac80211 cfg80211" I get the error "FATAL: Error inserting ath5k (/lib/modules/2.6.26-3-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath5k/ath5k.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)" [05:24] And from dmesg: "[ 2656.978388] ath5k: Unknown parameter `mac80211'" [05:25] i think there are more blueprints than are listed there, too. [05:25] I wish people would pay more attention to the time-changing wallpaper idea. [05:25] well its kind of like the release notes are made for kubuntu which explains the features etc. but you don't see such content like this until release [05:26] Jordan_U: try this: lsmod | grep 80211 [05:26] See if it shows anything -- and if it does, try unloading those modules. [05:26] flaccid: because they involve screenshots, and the work isn't done earlier? [05:27] it would be nice if the community could read about the objectives of the upcoming kubuntu release before it is released. screenshots are not required [05:27] eg. what are the objectives of kubuntu 8.10 ? i can't find anything on that.. [05:27] DanaG, It does, it lists the modules that I unloaded before trying to load them again with modprobe :) ( I am not sure that I have the correct modules though so please correct me if I don't ) [05:28] see the blueprints page [05:28] or watch #kubuntu-devel [05:28] The reason I ask: in some kernel versions I've used (don't remember which ones), I couldn't load both iwl3945 and b43 at the same time, because they had DIFFERENT versions of those modules, and those modules conflicted. [05:29] DanaG, Do you know what I need to get my atheros card functioning? [05:29] oky dok [05:29] I'm not getting that issue this time, though. [05:30] Hmm, you could try this: http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/ [05:30] Don't use "git checkout" -- it gets an incomplete tree that misses all the driver files. [05:30] DanaG, Is that for me? [05:30] Yeah. [05:32] im just thinking that the focus with kubuntu should now be useability with kde4 etc. so i'll do all the research and then maybe compile a list then submit back probably as single bugs [05:39] flaccid: That would be useful, but you'd likely want to file them upstream, too, since I don't think Kubuntu does a lot of patching. === DanaG1 is now known as DanaG [05:44] RAOF: yeah. i'll feedback to both kde and kubuntu. i mean we have some great potential here but quality and useability, stability etc. is what should be the focus now imho [05:46] argh, pulseaudio just started devouring my CPU. [05:48] ARgh, PulseAudio sucks at dealing with network interruptions. [05:49] If you get a dropout once... you have to kill and restart the server on the endpoint in order for the server you're on to be able to use it. [05:51] Yeah, that's kinda annoying (although killing the local server also works). [05:51] File a bug? :) [05:53] It's essentially unusable over wifi, also. [05:53] Even if one host is on wired and the other is on wireless. [05:53] Odd: I have surround51:1 listed TWICE in my device chooser. [05:54] Well this is nice, now with the new drivers unloading the module causes my system to hard lock [05:54] And the CPU-rapeage on pause sucks too. [05:54] !info nvidia-177-modaliases [05:54] nvidia-177-modaliases (source: nvidia-graphics-drivers-177): Modaliases for the NVIDIA binary X.Org driver. In component multiverse, is optional. Version 177.13-0ubuntu5 (intrepid), package size 14 kB, installed size 72 kB (Only available for i386 amd64) [05:54] what's that all about? [05:55] That'd be for jockey, I think. [05:56] IE: you can install the modaliases, and then jockey knows what cards are supported by which drivers. [05:57] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/221038 [05:57] Launchpad bug 221038 in pulseaudio "PulseAudio fails when Gstreamer is paused" [Undecided,Confirmed] [05:57] Will all the modaliases be installed by default? [05:57] Otherwise, if you have to explicitly install them... why bother? [05:57] Dunno. Probably. [05:58] Just to annoy you, I don't think I can reproduce that bug :) [05:58] Do you have default-sample-channels=6? [05:58] No, I guess not. [06:02] That may be the key. [06:02] Mmm, I just love how I can only view ONE flash video per Firefox session... and all others after that just crash. [06:02] ALL others. [06:03] At least nspluginwrapper prevents it from taking Firefox itself down. [06:03] s/video/video with sound/ [06:19] were do i get the source for the 2.6.26-3 generic kernel ? [06:20] krsnadasa: apt-get source linux-image-2.6.26-3 [06:21] cjb: cool and that will install it in right place (/usr/src) so other programs can compile off of it ? [06:21] yes, assuming it's available [06:21] cjb: thanks ;) [06:21] (it might be in /usr/src/linux-... and you need to symlink that to /usr/src/linux manually.) [06:24] cjb, krsnadasa: Actually, that won't put it to /usr/src; You'd be after the linux-source package. [06:24] But you probably only need the headers; they're in linux-headers. [06:25] cjb, That is not how apt-get source works, apt-get source will download to the current directory [06:25] D'oh. Sorry. [06:25] RAOF: no i know for a certain i need the source because i am building a driver that requires the kernel sorce [06:25] Then linux-source is the package you're after. [06:25] so how do i get the source for it ? [06:25] krsnadasa: (the way linux works, your driver might say it requires the kernel source, but it probably only requires the headers. they're a subset of the source.) [06:25] apt-get install linux-source ? [06:26] But many drivers don't require the actual source, just the headers. You're _sure_ it need the whole source tree? [06:26] krsnadasa: Indeed. aptitude install linux-source [06:26] apt-get install linux-source-2.6.23 [06:26] cjb: i tested already and know that it needs source [06:26] krsnadasa: seems unlikely, but okay. [06:26] the headers *are* source. just a small part of the source. [06:26] RAOF: and that will install into /usr/src and set up all the other good stuff ? [06:26] krsnadasa: Yes. [06:26] cjb: do oyu know anything about the headers ? [06:27] cjb: does it have the mac80211 source ? NO! so as i said it needs the source you already misled me once no need to do it again ;) [06:27] RAOF: thanks ;) [06:27] I can't seem to find the gstreamer plugin ffenc_h263, it was a part of the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg package, but it doesn't appear to be there [06:27] cjb: but thanks for your help anyway :D [06:28] krsnadasa: I would be surprised if it didn't have enough headers (.h files) to enable you to compile a further mac80211 driver, but you're welcome to just get the whole thing, of course. [06:28] Maiku, Totem doesn't find it automagically ? [06:29] I don't actually have any video offhand that needs it, I'm trying to fix some farsight stuff [06:29] Maiku: How about gst-plugins-farsight, then. I don't think farsight uses ffenc_h263, does it? [06:30] Oh yeah, there's more than just linux-headers. [06:30] there's linux-headers-lum and linux-headers-lbm [06:30] ... why? Beats me. [06:30] RAOF: it's one of the options it can use I believe [06:31] Hm. Anyway, gstreamer hates ffmpeg :). [06:31] (_Everyone_ hates ffmpeg) [06:31] lol [06:32] Why release a library? That's ten different kinds of effort. Everyone should just include our source in their source. And update their stuff every now and then as we break API. [06:34] RAOF: http://paste.ubuntu.com/27006/ any ideas? [06:34] oh, in addition to that, who can I bug to get libgstfarsight in the intrepid repos.. (even though the current one is going to be outdated as far as what I'm doing soon, with luck anyway) [06:34] Maiku: libgstfarsight _isn't_ in the Ubuntu repos? [06:35] not last time I looked [06:35] Hm. [06:35] What's it for? [06:35] libfarsight is though, libgstfarsight is for farsight2 [06:35] libfarsight is for farsight1 [06:35] Ahh. Shiny new crack! [06:36] lol, it provides much easier video stuff [06:36] Yeah, the farsight stuff looks cool. How released is farsight2, though? [06:37] krsnadasa: Ask upstream to not be stupid is how you'll fix that. Or building without -Werror, I think. [06:37] RAOF: how do you mean released? [06:37] Maiku: Can I download farsight2 tarballs? [06:37] yup [06:37] RAOF: what now ? [06:38] there's even a package in debian experimental [06:38] Maiku: Then the easiest thing to do is ask for a sync from Debian Experimental. [06:39] Things you'll definitely want to note in such a bug: check that it builds in Intrepid, and most importantly: why is it in experimental, and why we don't need to care. [06:41] hmm I may wait to request it until the next version comes out then [06:42] When's that? [06:44] that is an excellent question [06:44] "soon" [06:44] Intrepid feature freeze is a month and a half away, give or take. [06:45] I should hope it's before that [06:45] Right. [06:46] hopefully before jazzy :P [06:47] RAOF: sorry i didn't get what you said last time [06:58] RAOF: what was your solution to that compiling problem i had? [07:05] The Live "CD" for Alpha 2 is ~760 mb. Do they plan on cutting that down so it can fit on actual CD by Alpha 3? [07:06] it helps to search the before submitting a bug, the sync request already exists [07:11] except that it's been a month since there's been any activity on it.. [07:16] oops [07:16] finding my way around the keyboard shortcuts in Finch [07:16] in case you weren't aware, Alt+Q quits [07:16] lol [07:16] lol [09:20] hello...I have a 8.10 question.... http://pastebin.com/m3ae96f8c any help would be appreciated [09:24] bueller? bueller? After I rebooted, GDM won't successfully start, and after an attempt I get the message "The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to start a new one." [19:20] At least, not in my experience. [19:20] s/for/in/ [19:21] DanaG: ibex is in alpha, dont expect it to be stable in any regard [19:21] It's ALWAYS been like that for me, though. [19:21] if you want to use stable software, use hardy [19:21] Ever since the first day (back in Feisty or Gutsy) of switching from ipw3945.... [19:21] iwl3945 sucked then, too, [19:21] and it STILL sucks in Hardy, and all the way into Intrepid. [19:22] It's not a distro-version issue; it's an "iwl3945 sucks" issue. [19:22] iwl works well here :P [19:22] its probably related to your specific model then [19:22] Try using your rfkill switch for a while.... and watch as the device disables itself. No graphical interface at all. [19:35] how did you fix it? [19:35] I fixed it by using the recovery console, actually. I was expecting to have to use dpkg-configure but luckily it was simple enough.
