ApplerustUp for dealing out some advice?08:23
TheSheepI can answer questions but no hand-holding08:23
ApplerustFair enough. Let me fetch my laptop.08:23
ApplerustI have returned08:27
ApplerustI have installed Xbuntu completely on the laptop as far as I know. If I let it load normally I get an Xbuntu logo with a progress bar below it that gets hung up. Seems as if the computer is frozen.08:28
Applerust2 lights blink on the laptop and continue blinking into eternity.08:28
Applerustso.. I tried another boot method.08:29
Applerustrecovery mode08:29
Applerustwhich is attempting to load now.08:29
ApplerustI get an error:08:30
TheSheepthe blinking leds sound like a kernel panic08:30
ApplerustKernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt08:31

microwaverHello y'all, anyone else experiencing issues with the screensaver in xubuntu?08:51
cody-somervillemicrowaver, I imagine08:52
cody-somervillemicrowaver, whats your problem?08:52
ApplerustSorry, im completely new. trying to get one of my wireless cards to work in xbuntu atm.08:52
Applerust1 of them freeze the computer and the other just does nothing.08:53
microwavercody-somerville, well, it just doesn't do what I tell it too :) in applications > settings > settings manager  > screensaver I set it on 3 minutes. it just does the 10 minutes standard blank screen; even tho I disabled all of that in powersave menu08:53
Applerustcool :) lol08:54
cody-somervillemicrowaver, Can you give me the output of ~/.dmrc ?08:54
microwavercody-somerville, just cat ~/.dmcr ?08:55
cody-somerville~/.dmrc08:55
microwaverNo such file or directory08:56
microwaverbut when I cat it I get this :08:56
microwaver[Desktop]08:56
microwaverSession=default08:56
cody-somervilleRight08:57
cody-somervilleSo, I need you to logout08:57
cody-somervilleand click session08:57
cody-somervilleand select xfce08:57
cody-somervilleand then log back in08:57

microwaverok08:57
microwaverlet's see then08:57
microwaversee you in 2 sec08:57
cody-somervilleokay :)08:58
ApplerustI feel kinda overwhelmed. Way too used to windows.09:00
Applerustwhen I ran xbuntu off the cd the wireless card worked automatically. now if I plug the one that worked in the computer freezes. kind of at a loss.09:01
Applerustafter the installation that is.09:01
cody-somervilleApplerust, I can try giving you a hand later but I need to get to bed09:02
ApplerustOk, goodnight.09:04

cody-somervillemicrowaver, np :]09:05
WindowsMDHello, does anyone here have compiz installed and may be able to help me out a little bit please?09:06
microwaverso Applerust what's your problem?09:06
Applerustthats a broad question for me :)09:06
Applerustbut at the moment id say its the inability to do anything for myself concerning this wireless card situation.09:07
ApplerustI have 2 wireless cards.  1 is a linksys and 1 is an old netgear. they both work just not on this laptop with xbuntu.09:07
microwaverApplerust, so your problem is : make the cards work on xubuntu.09:07
Applerusthowever the netgear one did work when I had xbuntu running off of the cd earlier before I actually installed it.09:07
microwaverso a driver issue09:08
Applerustyeah09:08
microwaverdo you have any restricted driver running?09:08
Applerustif it was a driver issue then why did it work off the cd before I installed it?09:08
ApplerustI dont know. the only linux system I have ever used was damn small linux and I have forgotten most of that.09:08
WindowsMDcd can have diff driver than distro sometimes I noticed it earlier or sometimes have more by default09:08
Applerustwell I installed it off the same cd as it was running on.09:09
WindowsMDit screwed up in autodetection?09:09
Applerustthe netgear freezes the computer and the linksys just does nothing.09:09
Applerustas for the restricted driver.. the hardware drivers list is completely empty.09:10
WindowsMDwhat model of linksys card?09:10
Applerustwusb54gsc09:10
Applerusthttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=764311&highlight=wireless+connection+linksys+wireless-g09:12
Applerustbasically the same problem here.09:12
WindowsMDwhat's in the file /var/log/syslog after you plug in your device09:12
Applerustsec I will plug it in09:12
Applerustit says new device added09:13
Applerustit sees it09:13
WindowsMDsadly I am used to doing this for fedora just recently tried xubunto myself09:13
Applerustso since it sees it.. then what?09:14
WindowsMDhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=36893109:14
WindowsMDshould have some help there perhaps if you read their steps09:14
Applerustok reading it now.09:15
WindowsMDpage 2 had their solution09:15
WindowsMDtop of it09:16
WindowsMDI'm typically good at figuring out hardware problems but I can't do something most consider easy...changing desktop themes >.<09:17
Applerustwhen I was told ubuntu was like a mix between windows and dos.. they should have said its pretty like windows but almost everything is done like dos :)09:18
ApplerustI read it.. Im gonna try it now if I can find the right stuff.09:18
WindowsMDkk09:19
WindowsMDyep hopefully it does I've loved fedora before09:19
WindowsMDjust recently preffered simpler installer of xbunto myself09:19
WindowsMDXP for my games and cs3 and xbunto for...everything else09:20
Applerustcs3?09:21
Applerustphotoshop?09:21
WindowsMDyep09:21
WindowsMDand illustrator09:21
ApplerustI have that09:21
Applerustgood stuff09:21
ApplerustI use xp pro as well on my main machine.09:21
ApplerustI input the code in the terminal.09:22
Applerustit says my cpp and gcc are already the newest versions.09:22
Applerusteverything else unavailable.09:22
WindowsMDhmm well trying to think....perhaps it's trying to use wrong dirver is what I'm thinking09:23
WindowsMDI had that happen once before09:23
WindowsMDwhat is make of other card perhaps better luck with that one?09:23
Applerustnetgear 802.11b  model ma40109:24
Applerusthow do I check the driver for the usb linksys card I have in already?09:26
ApplerustI dont even have the option for a wireless network under network.09:26
microwaverWindowsMD, how do you emulate your photoshop and illustrator, Vbox?09:27
WindowsMDI don't emulate it....09:28
WindowsMDI have a particition set for xp09:28
WindowsMDmuch simpler09:28
microwaver'participation set' ?09:29
Applerustpartition09:29
WindowsMDyep aka I boot into xp for that part09:29
WindowsMDand for your other one09:29
WindowsMDhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/9581709:29
Applerustso he has an option upon boot up to choose which OS he wants.09:29
WindowsMDbug report09:29
ubottuLaunchpad bug 95817 in linux-source-2.6.22 "Hardy's Kernel Panics With Netgear MA401 PCMCIA Wireless Installed ( Gutsy and Feisty as well )" [Medium,Confirmed]09:29
Applerustright.. thats why the lights were blinking and the computer froze.09:30
WindowsMDyep09:30
microwaveryeah i got that09:30
microwaverbut never heard of participation set :p09:30
microwaverused to dualboot as well. but now since I've got this laptop my desktop = XP. laptop xubuntu09:31
WindowsMDyeah I use a tower and my old laptop used to be a fedora machine09:31
WindowsMDwhat version of xubunto u using?09:32
WindowsMDapple09:32
Applerustman.. I read a lot of those posts about this problem.. I see no solution in sight. the search continues.. be back in a few after I read more.09:33
WindowsMDapplerust what version?09:33
WindowsMDlatest?09:33
WindowsMDhttp://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/problem-wwusb54gsc-in-ubuntu-8.04-639797/09:34
WindowsMDthis looks promising09:34
WindowsMDfor your other card09:34
Applerustversion of? xbuntu?09:35
WindowsMDyep09:36
Applerustnewest I think.. I downloaded it and burned the image today.09:36
Applerustthere may be some updates.. I guess I could plug it in and try it.09:36
WindowsMDyeah but check that last link I sent09:37
WindowsMDit's for the other card09:37
Applerustk, checking09:37
WindowsMDcould be ndis prob09:37
WindowsMDI used to do linux searches for people as a chacha guide and stilll occassionally do when I login09:38
WindowsMDso that work?09:41
Applerustedhard wired in atm. just updated.09:41
WindowsMDkk09:41
WindowsMDtry what link said all?09:41
Applerustwas a small update09:41
Applerustnot yet still reading.09:41
WindowsMDsmall makes big differences usually though ^.^  I know of windows updates that did less than small linux ones .09:42
ApplerustI guess I should actually try to download the driver first of all.. lol09:42
ApplerustI dont update windows at all ever..09:42
Applerustever09:42
Applerustsp 2 is enough for me09:42
WindowsMDI have to...windows is too dumb to read my audio/gfx chipset automatically unlike latest xubunto I used wubi installer09:43
WindowsMDimho wubi is one of best moves of whole community that kind of installer...it'll def encourage Vista users to come over...when they can't get their printers to work...09:45
Applerustedhello?09:46
Applerustok, I found out the problem.09:46
Applerustthe other wireless card required the amount of power an USB 2.0 slot would give.09:47
WindowsMDwhat was it?09:47
Applerustthis is an older laptop..09:47
WindowsMDoh09:47
ApplerustI used an older wireless card from my wifes crap computer.09:47
Applerustworks fine09:47
WindowsMDahh09:47
WindowsMDglad that worked for you then09:48
Applerustso I could have done any amount of software fixes I wanted... none of it would have worked :)09:48
ApplerustI do appreciate your help however.09:48
WindowsMDwish you would've told me older labtop to start lol09:48
WindowsMDit's alright09:48
WindowsMDtyvm09:48
ApplerustI had no idea it wasnt a 2.0 slot..09:48
ApplerustI thought 2.0 had been around longer than they had I guess.09:49
WindowsMDoh I could've had you run a test to check that lol09:49
Applerustso now I need to learn linux in general.09:49
ApplerustIm wondering why it isnt slightly more user friendly than it is? loads more people would switch to it if it was.09:49
WindowsMDwell I haven't had to touch terminal very much at all thanks to synaptic package manager09:50
Applerustwindows 3.1 is more user friendly.09:50
Applerustsynaptic package manager.. explain please.09:50
hadshaha09:50
ApplerustI say something funny?09:50
WindowsMDyou know windows add/remove programs...if it could find programs and dl them and install them for you...it would be same09:51
ApplerustOoo sweet!09:51
WindowsMDand you don't have to touch terminal xd09:51
Applerustlooks like I just found my first thing to download.09:51
WindowsMDit's built in09:51
ApplerustOo09:51
WindowsMDcheck under applications system09:51
Applerustnow you see how new I am? :)09:51
WindowsMDfrankly could've been more user friendly of name....like program finder09:52
WindowsMDor something along those lines09:52
RyanVanDiemenhey guys, I have to agree, synaptic is one of the things I fell in love with ubuntu on first sight :)09:52
RyanVanDiemenI used to run Suse for few years, but then tried ubuntu and I`m still on it...09:52
WindowsMDwell until they make it work with direct X 9 I got keep switching xd09:53
ApplerustIm checking it out now.09:53
RyanVanDiemenbut have to admit suse improved its pack. management as well especially with new 11.009:53
WindowsMDI'm prob switching back to fedora later09:53
microwaveryum apt-get =P09:54
ApplerustSPM.. this is sick!09:54
WindowsMDyepppers....I don't need synaptic....09:55
WindowsMDit just makes life a bit easier09:55
Applerustbut you want it?09:55
Applerustk09:55
WindowsMDI prefer better documentation of fedora09:56
WindowsMDplus I do like their interface a bit better09:56
Applerustfedora was one I looked into getting. my friend suggested ubuntu over fedora for me to start on.09:56
WindowsMDyeah09:56
WindowsMDubunto=more user friendly09:56
microwaverstrange thing is, I found lot's of usefull doc's on gentoo wiki that worked for my ubuntu problems :P09:56
WindowsMDyeah gentoo is another great one09:57
ApplerustI dont plan on having any problems :)09:57
Applerustlol09:57
WindowsMDyep, so anything real basic you need to know and that?09:57
WindowsMDbtw did you already install amarak=wmp09:58
Applerustany suggestions on apps I might need/want for typical use?09:58
WindowsMDwell for music amarak09:58
Applerustamarak, no I have no idea what that is.09:58
WindowsMDwindows media player basically09:58
Applerustgotcha09:59
WindowsMDabiword=m$ word09:59
WindowsMDthough I just use google docs09:59
ApplerustI saw abiword. I was going to ask about that one.09:59
Applerustk then.09:59
Applerustfirefox comes already on there.. which I like loads.09:59
WindowsMDgoogle docs I think is superior to any office prog really10:00
WindowsMDu familiar with that web based app of theirs?10:00
microwaveramarok rocks10:00
microwaveryou could also use openoffice :)10:00
ApplerustI have used open office on xp. I hated it. it was bug city.10:01
WindowsMDI never had real issues with it in xp10:01
ApplerustI have heard of google docs10:01
WindowsMDgoogle docs rock you replace word, excel, and ppt10:01
ApplerustIll give it a try.10:01
WindowsMDyeah I sold my soul to google a long time ago10:01
WindowsMDthunderbird=outlook10:02
ApplerustI dont use outlook. I use yahoo and gmail10:02
WindowsMDyou are already using pidgin I presume?10:02
WindowsMDahh10:02
Applerustyes10:02
Applerustpidgin is great10:03
WindowsMDI use it on xp as well xd10:03
Applerustsame10:03
WindowsMDI did start with trillian but then switched over due to superior logging abilities10:03
Applerustohh I used good ol trillian way back when it was free when it first came out.10:04
Applerustused to love it.10:04
WindowsMDwell you already have movie player right?10:04
Applerusthmm10:04
Applerustso how do I actually install things from SPM?10:04
ApplerustI have winamp on my main machine. I use that for multimedia.10:05
WindowsMDyou right click and it'll be on option or check box then hit apply10:05
WindowsMDI use wmp 1110:05
WindowsMDI use an external for all my music10:05
WindowsMDthat's only reason I use it10:05
Applerusthmm10:05
ApplerustI have already tried right clicking. it comes up with options.. but10:05
Applerustmark for installation is greyed out.10:05
Applerustmaybe because it is already installed?10:06
Applerustand I didnt know it?10:06
ApplerustI guess green means I have it and white means I dont.10:06
microwaverlol10:06
microwaverhow mutch did they give you in place?10:06
WindowsMDa good bit10:06
WindowsMDhardly anything I can think you'll need that isn't pre-installed unless amarak or movie player wasn't10:07
ApplerustI wont use the laptop for movies or music. except maybe youtube or something like that10:07
WindowsMDahh and give google docs a try10:08
Applerusthmm, new question.10:08
WindowsMDthough I never had issues with it on fedora10:08
Applerustyeah I have google docs open on this machine.10:08
WindowsMDopenoffice10:08
ApplerustI see a few things in the spm list with the ubuntu symbol beside them that are not installed.10:09
Applerustfirmware and kernel sources.10:09
Applerustthese would be good to have I assume?10:09
WindowsMDwell I'd read description and what I'd use is...an old rule I use for windows machines10:09
WindowsMDif it ain't broke don't fix it10:09
Applerustfair enough. I live by that with my car.10:10
WindowsMDyeppers10:11
ApplerustI assume most windows programs will not run on ubuntu.10:11
WindowsMDwhat apps you got in mind?10:11
Applerustgames mainly10:12
WindowsMDno direct x games will run unless you use wine....10:12
WindowsMDand gl with that10:12
Applerustanything special I should do for flash support?10:12
WindowsMDwell I found the browser itself is extremely helpful10:13
microwaverI do'nt have any real flash erros here10:13
microwaverfirefox did a good job on that10:13
WindowsMDyep10:13
WindowsMDplus adobe worked with em this time I think10:13
WindowsMDwhich probably helped10:13
Applerustok.. so in SPM almost everything on the list is already on my machine. will all of those programs automatically update or is that something I will do manually?10:14
WindowsMDwell I think most apps will check for new versions automatically10:14
Applerustgreat10:14
WindowsMDor you just bring up the manager and it'll check for ya10:15
WindowsMDand something hilarious for ya...my old gateway keyboard with a sub sideport gets better detection in xubunto10:16
Appleruststrange10:17
WindowsMDI think linux beats xp for usb support10:17
Applerustok.. heres one.10:17
ApplerustI just tried to play a flash movie. its giving me an option of 3 things to install.10:17
Applerustadobe flash (which I am used to)    swfdec, and gnash swf10:18
ApplerustI assume go with adobe?10:18
WindowsMDyeppers10:18
WindowsMDalso go  with default you think typically10:18
WindowsMDlike if you go to runescape or another java based site10:18
microwaverI went with gnash, no problems there as well.10:18
WindowsMDuse sun10:19
Applerustsun java is what I am used to.10:19
ApplerustI am used to anything standard for windows.10:19
WindowsMDyep I figured10:20
Applerusthmm flashplugin-nonfree10:20
WindowsMDif you were a mac user you'd probably have no reason to try it xd10:20
ApplerustI assume I need this as well. Hey guys.. sorry for all the questions.10:21
microwaverI'm still considering buying a mac as my new system but I'm not sure of the parallels software if it is good for game performance10:21
ApplerustI read something somewhere on the forums about not downloading the flashplugin-nonfree for some reason. any truth to this?10:21
ApplerustMacs are basically PCs now anyway.10:22
Applerustgo with whatever is cost effective.10:22
microwaveryeah but for game support :)10:22
WindowsMDwell frankly that's why you buy a win xp machine to dual boot xd10:23
Applerustwhat game do you have in mind that will run on mac that wont run on a pc?10:23
WindowsMDfruity loops is a game...practically10:23
WindowsMDbut it's mac only10:23
Applerustfruity loops.. the program for making music?10:23
WindowsMDyeah10:23
Applerustthat is not for mac only.10:23
ApplerustI have used it on a pc many times.10:24
Applerusthad loads and loads of sound samples. lost them all from my dog using my cds as chew toys.10:24
WindowsMDlol10:25
Applerustactually now that I think about it.. I doubt fruit loops started on Macs.. it was probably on PCs first.10:25
WindowsMDyeah, but imovie is prob a good example of a practical toy10:26
Applerustnot familiar with that10:28
WindowsMDit's part of apple's exclusive ilife suite10:28
WindowsMDI used that before...though i must admit windows movie maker in vista is decent, though vista itself isn't, and apple's program is superior for movie editing to both of them10:29
WindowsMDerr adobe's10:29
ApplerustI am so ignorant with anything related to Linux. (I hate vista)10:29
ApplerustI installed the flash plugin. do I need to restart my laptop or something? it still says I need to download the flash player to view flash movies.10:30
microwaverso crossover fixes game support?10:30
WindowsMDcrossover?10:30
WindowsMDnow you got my interest10:30
WindowsMDwill it run guild wars?10:30
Applerustguild wars any good?10:31
WindowsMDdecent10:31
WindowsMDgood enough till d310:31
Applerustcompare it to WoW?10:31
WindowsMDsame or better without monthly fee10:31
Applerustahh I am so rdy for sc210:31
WindowsMDsame10:31
Applerustmaybe ill try guild wars then.10:31
microwaverI'm ready for Diablo 3 /)10:31
WindowsMDI hope d3 and sc2 have full opengl support10:32
Applerust.tar.gz   .rpm or YUM?10:32
Applerustany ideas?10:32
WindowsMDhmm micro would it be rpm?10:32
ApplerustSC2 looks amazing so far. I heard with D3 that you have to go to another planet.10:32
WindowsMDI'm too used to yum with fedora I'm tempted to say that10:32
microwaverthey'd better announce some more classes on dia310:33
Applerustwell I guess I am about to DL adobeflashplayer YUM then.10:33
WindowsMDwell I don't mind my necros being gone10:33
ApplerustIve heard of .tar.gz but never rpm or yum10:34
WindowsMDI think it goes without saying pally gonna be coming back10:34
WindowsMDI just would use package manager and what ff said10:34
WindowsMDand use the one built in through that10:34
Applerustff?10:35
WindowsMDfirefox10:35
Applerustwell its not working. in firefox.10:36
Applerustand I dont see anything flash related in package manager.10:36
ApplerustI have flashplugin-nonfree10:36
Applerustsays so in package manager10:36
WindowsMDyeah I'd uninstall the addon in firefox10:37
WindowsMDand did you try refreshing the page?10:37
Applerustyes I did multiple times. no luck10:37
Applerustuninstall it in firefox.. hmm ok10:37
ApplerustI have no idea how to do that either.10:37
WindowsMDprefs in firefox for lin are under edit...why it's movied from tools I dunno10:38
WindowsMDthat's one of my few complaints about linux version of firefox10:39
Applerustedit pref is pretty standard though.10:39
WindowsMDand then you go to manage add ons at bottom10:39
Applerustnothing under applications.10:39
WindowsMDhold on just listen10:39
Applerustk10:40
WindowsMDgo to prefs manage add ons and plugins10:40
WindowsMDremove that other one10:40
WindowsMDthen get diff10:40
Applerustall that is there is default plugin and demo print plugin.10:41
WindowsMDtry restarting browser?10:42
Applerustwill do10:42
Applerustbrb bathroom break10:43
Applerustback10:45
WindowsMDwb10:46
Applerustrestart did it10:46
ApplerustI need to just try to focus on common sense a bit more and I think I will be ok.10:46
WindowsMDyeah10:47
WindowsMDI would've just done a dual boot or used wubi installer xd10:47
Applerustwubi?10:48
JammetHello there everyone =).10:48
ApplerustHey10:48
WindowsMDhello10:48
WindowsMDname of the small little app windows users can run to install linux from getgo10:48
JammetJust installed ubuntu (xubuntu) for the first time. It's working pretty nice, though I have a little bit of a problem with mplayer not being able to show me videos in xv extension.10:49
WindowsMDhmm never heard of that extension before10:49
JammetIt's quite simply but not hardware accelerated.10:50
JammetSo I can watch videos in choppy x11, but I would like to use the xv (video overlay) instead.10:50
ApplerustMD you suggested a movie player to me earlier.. what was it?10:50
WindowsMDMovePlayer it's default what they are using10:51
JammetI need to use my trusty good old 'mplayer'. Forgive me but - I just don't like other players.10:51
JammetBesides, if one particular player can use xv, all of them can. So fixing this problem fixes it for all players.10:51
WindowsMDhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_video_extension10:52
WindowsMDthat's what I do got10:52
WindowsMDnewer graphics card?10:52
JammetYeah. The page describes what I mean.10:52
JammetIt's a pretty good Radeon. Even older models of that card have working xv.10:52
WindowsMDthe problems with newer cards section fo the wiki?10:52
WindowsMDDue to the release of DirectX 10, some modern graphics cards have limited or altered texture overlay capabilities by design, including the nVidia GeForce 8 series cards and later which have scaled back some of their capabilities during the addition of DirectX 10 support in preparation for Windows Vista. The nVidia GeForce 8800 series cards including the 8800GT and 8800GTS now only support a single texture overlay on the primary 10:53
ApplerustI read about Wubi, looks cool. I just wanted windows off this machine completely. Will force me to learn Unbuntu.10:53
JammetThanks for pointing that out, I did not know that. However, xv works fine with this very card when I boot Knoppix and open videos.10:54
WindowsMDwell perhaps knoppix uses some diff driver10:54
JammetThat's a possibility.10:54
WindowsMDso try a driver hunt?10:54
JammetI do not know how and where Xubuntu makes and stores it's xorg.conf. The file is mysteriously small, and it just keeps saying Default everywhere.10:55
JammetComing from Gentoo, it is a bit difficult to find my way around there.10:55
WindowsMDwhich is one of reasons I am prob going back to fedora10:56
WindowsMDI loved my fedora v 4.010:56
JammetIs there a button I can press to actually see the boot process in text form, as I am used to? Watching the Xubuntu Logo just makes me uneasy.10:58
WindowsMDapple might want to try kwireless monitor frontend?10:58
Applerustrecovery mode10:58
WindowsMDhmm10:59
WindowsMDyou can change the splash screen10:59
JammetThe recovery mode is the only way? Seriously?10:59
Applerustpress esc at startup and use recovery mode. it shows everything.10:59
Applerustonly way I know :)10:59
Applerustim new..10:59
JammetOMG.10:59
WindowsMDthere undoubtedly is another way10:59
Applerustmakes sense.10:59
JammetHeh - I appreciate it trying to be user friendly but...10:59
WindowsMDiI just don't know it either10:59
Applerustlol10:59
JammetOkay.10:59
Applerusttry recovery mode11:00
Applerustit seemed harmless enough11:00
WindowsMDwell...my thought is perhaps check for different frontends to help for boot process?11:00
JammetMaybe I'll have to rename it to "normal mode".11:00
WindowsMDand setit to default I liked watching my fedora boot as well11:01
JammetIf the only difference is that you can see and influence the bootup and startup sequences, I am fine with just running recovery mode at all times.11:01
WindowsMDyeah11:01
WindowsMDI liked that part about bootup with fedora11:02
WindowsMDI could disable stuff I wasn't going to use11:02
JammetThis is really a first for me. Never before have I seen a boot for Linux that forced me to stare at a splashscreen with no opt out whatsoever.11:02
WindowsMDyeah same here11:03
WindowsMDit's a pleasant change in a way for me11:03
WindowsMDyou can change splash screen though11:03
JammetTo me it's kinda annoying. That's a verschlimmbesserung ;).11:03
JammetIf I wanted to change the splash screen I'd go buy me a new cell phone.11:04
JammetWhat's next, ringtones...11:04
WindowsMDlol I customized my xp splash I use both11:04
JammetI couldn't care less about what choices I have in splash screens if there is no way not to have one.11:05
WindowsMDthough i do hope someone would develop a way even if not entirely legal to run direct x directly on linux without emulation11:05
JammetI thought it is about calling APIs, not emulation? Wine that is.11:06
WindowsMDwine=emulation truly though11:06
WindowsMDand a poor excuse of it as well11:06
WindowsMDfps takes a huge hit11:07
JammetAs far as I learned, it is not emulation but more like interpretion and translation, looking up calls in a Linux <> Windows dictionary.11:07
JammetThe few shooters I ran on Wine were perfectly fluid.11:08
WindowsMDshooters....try diablo 2 with it11:08
JammetCannot, at least not right now. I got this xv thing to figure out first.11:08
WindowsMDapple that reminds me...you want xubuntu-restricted-extras11:09
ApplerustI dunno11:09
Applerustdo I?11:09
JammetI will try the "other" driver. The mean, the official, the forbidden one. The bad, the ugly, the good one.11:09
WindowsMDyes11:10
ApplerustOk.. yes I do.11:10
WindowsMDit's under meta Packages under multiverse11:10
WindowsMDyou play mp3s right?11:10
ApplerustI do. I doubt I will on the laptop much.11:10
WindowsMDyou also were having issues with flash xd11:10
JammetAre there the win32 codecs in there, too? In that multiverse? I tried to find them anywhere.11:10
TheSheep!win3211:11
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about win3211:11
Applerustflash is good now. looking for multiverse now.11:11
TheSheep!codecs11:11
ubottuFor multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats - See also http://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/common-tasks-chap.html - But please use free formats if you can: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats11:11
TheSheepJammet: they are in the medibuntu repo11:11
JammetTheSheep: I was their, the website is down, which made me wonder.11:12
Jammettheir - there11:12
Applerustwell I have learned a lot in the past hour or so. Thanks to all for help and esp to MD. Now I am off to bed. night11:14
WindowsMDnight11:14
JammetThank you for pointing out the help pages, I am installing a good chunk of codecs through that. No win32 dlls yet tho.11:14
WindowsMDand I just learned that bot probably can be of help11:14
WindowsMD!compiz11:14
ubottuCompiz (compositing window manager) and XGL (X server architecture layered on top of OpenGL) - Howto at http://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager - help in #compiz-fusion11:14
WindowsMD.....11:14
JammetI believe I have made a good step forward as well. If this works out, the w32codecs are well within reach after this.11:16
WindowsMDwait instead of dling that Oulcn'd I just copy those from my external drive to use?11:17
WindowsMDI got a copy of windows xp on it as well for backup11:17
WindowsMDhow do you change your interfaces though/11:20
WindowsMD!interface11:22
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about interface11:22
WindowsMD!frontend11:22
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about frontend11:22
WindowsMD!gui11:23
ubottuThe graphical user interface (GUI) in Ubuntu is composed of many elements, including the !X server, a window manager, and a desktop environment such as !GNOME or !KDE (which themselves use the !GTK and !Qt toolkits respectively)11:23
cody-somerville!themes-xfce11:23
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about themes-xfce11:23
JammetWhat interface are you looking for?11:23
WindowsMDmainly just how to switch between em11:23
JammetInterfacing.... what?11:23
WindowsMDI can do alot of config for hardware and that but not switch from kde to gnome or compiz11:24
cody-somervilleYou do that at the login screen for kde, gnome, and xfce4, etc.11:24
JammetYou want to change your Xsession then.11:24
WindowsMDwhere is it on there?11:24
cody-somervilleClick the "session" button11:25
WindowsMDoh...11:25
WindowsMDanything useful I should know about gui of this...I'm trying to only use gui to see how far I can get11:26
WindowsMDI'm used to fedora11:26
JammetAs far as I know, Compiz is attached to either Gnome, XFCE, KDE, or whatever else Desktop management you chose.11:27
JammetIt is just for effects, for show, for eye candy.11:27
WindowsMDyep11:27
WindowsMDI wanted to show it to a friend who thought vista was good11:27
JammetYou mean you wanted to show it to a friend who thought eye candy means good? ;)11:28
WindowsMDyeah11:28
WindowsMDI personally see nothing wrong with clean and simple and uncluttered=good11:29
WindowsMDaka why I have my ff extremely customized using stylish11:29
JammetDo your worst. Just don't overdo it. If everything is bouncing at me, it just creeps me out.11:29
WindowsMDand menuedit to move things around11:29
WindowsMDI'll put it on hollywood don't got anything mode...11:29
WindowsMDto show em11:29
JammetThere is a frontend for compiz, not sure what it is called. But it configures everything of what compiz usually does, but nothing else. You still configure your actual Desktop the way you did before.11:30
WindowsMDyeah I got it11:30
WindowsMDit's right next to it in synaptic11:30
WindowsMDthey make it easy enough to find11:30
JammetThere are effects in there that I really hate, because with some of them you have to wait so they finish drawing before you can continue with whatever you are doing. I do not like waiting for eye candy to finish up.11:31
JammetBut there sure is eye candy that I like having. Window births for example.11:32
WindowsMDyeah neither do I11:32
WindowsMDknow of anyway I can move the clock....11:32
WindowsMDto lower righthand?11:32
WindowsMDnvm11:33
WindowsMDit can just drag and drop...too easy11:33
WindowsMDjust can't move apps and them from top but that don't bug me11:33
JammetThe point of the exercise is, though, that most of what compiz can show off are effects that do not require a lot of horsepower. Meaning, you can accomplish some neat effects with older computers. That is, I think, a good way to show a difference between what Vista is made for.11:33
JammetAnd what you have.11:33
WindowsMDyeah my comp is vista ready actually11:34
WindowsMDhe's been bugging me why I keep xp on it lol11:34
JammetI would take a really low spec computer and put them side by side. Low spec PC with Compiz and Highend rig with Vista. And once you finished comparing eye candy - go public with the specs.11:35
WindowsMDI told them due to i wanted to get work done with photoshop xd11:35
WindowsMDnothing against gimp....but it's so backwards to use11:35
JammetI like gimp, but I am backwards myself.11:36
WindowsMDyeah I use gimpshop hack for win at times11:36
WindowsMDcs3 is more like gimp11:36
JammetIf you must have something like Photoshop in Linux, maybe try using Pixel instead.11:36
WindowsMDnahh that's why I dual boot xp with it11:36
JammetOkay.11:37
WindowsMDnow if they had something like apple has where you can run them side by side....11:37
JammetA virtual machine capable of running that should exist.11:37
WindowsMDyeah but I mean one more userfriendly and geared towards that11:37
WindowsMDthough did anyone try to see if apple's would work on nix?11:38
cody-somervillePhotoshop runs fine under Wine11:39
JammetNo idea.11:39
WindowsMDcs3 portable version?11:39
JammetPerhaps just buy vmware and use that.11:39
WindowsMDI already paid price for windows....why buy it again?11:39
cody-somervillePhotoshop runs fine under Wine for free. :]11:39
JammetEvery instance and flavour, with all mods and addons? I have a little doubt, honestly.11:40
JammetGotta go AFK.11:40
WindowsMDyeah mine is the portable version...I sincerely doubt it will run fine..with my custom addons11:40
cody-somervilleI gotta jet too. *waves*11:41
WindowsMDkk but know anything abotu crossover?11:41
microwaverHello , my printscreen isn't seem to be working12:22
TheSheepmicrowaver: what do you mean?12:23
wrtpeepshas anyone here got dual monitors working with an ati card?12:23
microwaverI wanted to make a print screen of a webpage, did that, opened gimp but there I couldn't paste the print screened bti12:23
microwaverbit*12:23
TheSheepmicrowaver: it doesn't work like that, gimp has a screenshot utility in the 'aquire' menu12:24
TheSheepmicrowaver: you can also install scrot and bind it to your printscreen key12:24
TheSheepmicrowaver: or use the panel plugin12:24
microwaverSo by default nothing is binded to the Prnt Scrn button?12:24
TheSheepmicrowaver: yes12:25
TheSheepnothing is bound12:25
microwaverah, ok my bad, I thought it was (in gnome it waas like that :))12:25
TheSheepgimp's utility is nicer anyways ;)12:26
wrtpeepsI am having a problem with 3d acceleration. When I type glxgears they don't spin. They were spinning before I edited xorg.conf to setup dual monitors. I have an ati card. Anyone any ideas?12:27
wrtpeeps1 sec I'll pastebin xorg.conf12:27

FalcI'm trying to get my microphone to work on my EeePC 4gb.But for some reason I cannot get it to use the mic correctly. I'vr discovered it'll play my mic back to me if I turn up Front Mic in the mixer. This worked in Ubuntu(was unsuitable) and I've tried using the gnone-volume-mixer to no avail. It's odd I can hear te mic but not capture from it, does anyone have any suggestions?13:32
ablomenFalc, i guess if your mic does work its a problem in the settings of the recording app itself13:33
ablomenwhat are you using to record?13:33
FalcI've also noticed some odd behavior... it'll always select "mic" as an input source and not "front mic" like I want it to13:34
FalcSo far I've tried using Skype and "sound recorder"13:34
Falcgnome-sound-recorder. Part of gnome-media I assume13:35
ablomenhmm ok i guess if you fiddle with the settings of both a bit it should work13:35
ablomencant really help ya though, since i have no mic here13:35
FalcHmm.... okay13:38

CCCnive got some questions...hello15:20
Myrttiand patience shall avail15:22
arrcI've just got my new EEEPC901 and I installed Xubuntu on it. However, now my network card doesn't work. Lshw says "network unclaimed", and I also get eth0:  no such device, when i try to check the eth0 status. How can I fix this?15:31
arrcNo one?15:40
arrcI'm getting pretty desperate.15:40
Myrttiarrc: you installed the eeexubuntu version?15:43
arrcI did that first, and I had this problem15:44
arrcI thought that since the 901 has a different network card than previous models (with n wifi support), the problem might be that eeexubuntu installed wrong drivers and didn't include the ones i needed15:44
arrcSo installed a normal xubuntu distro15:44
arrcBut still got the same problem15:44
arrcneither the wireless nor the ethernet card is being detected. however the wireless is a known bug, and I could've fixed it easilly i believe15:45
joakimI started having problems with my internet connection today.15:46
arrcSigh.16:01

dromerI get permission denied17:54
ER_Aim not to good with macs but it sounds like a classic firewall17:55
dromerheh, well, all macs on the network can enter the share, but no windows or linux pc's can :/17:55
dromerbut I'm gonig to install a linux-server for all clients to connect to soon anyway .. just wanted to see if I could get on the share with samba17:56
ER_Ais the share bassed on a mac?17:56
dromeratm yes17:56
ER_Aim intersted in linux server too17:56
ER_AIm having networking issues!17:56
ER_A:P17:56
dromerwhat's the issue? :P17:57
ER_Ai can only access my shares via smb://IPaddress rather than smb://sharename17:57
ER_Awouldnt be a problem but my router assigns a diffrent IP everytime a comp is turned on17:58
ER_Alol17:58
dromerhmm, sucks17:58
dromerfix your router then ;)17:58
ER_Aso u have to sit there and guess like 5 times before you get to the computer17:58
ER_Ai tryed setting static Ips yesterday but I just fluffed up the whole network17:59
ER_Alol17:59
zoredacheER_A: you probably need to setup either your hosts file or a dns server17:59
ER_Amy familly loves it when I fix there computers but hate it when I break them... i try to explain that its development in working progress but they don't wana know, lol17:59

dromerzoredache: if the numbers keep changing .. dns isn't of much use ;)18:01
ER_Abut you think my problem is with DNS?18:01
ER_Aindeed18:01
zoredachedromer: sure it is, you just have to setup your server to accept dynamic name updates, then adjust your dhcp client or dhcp server to publich dns update messages18:02
ER_Aonly 5% left till i get xubuntu now (i got an old laptop to put it on) Ive never used Xfce before so it should be interesting18:03
ER_Ahmmm that sounds complicated18:03
zoredacheER_A: if you can't get to a system by name, and only by IP then it is almost certainly a name resolution issue...18:03
dromerI've never used xfce either, I have a 800mhz box setup right now .. too bad I can't access that damn mac :<18:04
ER_Areally?18:04

dromerso, any advice on how to share a folder with a user/pass combo with samba? :)18:04
ER_AI can get to a share by putting in smb://IP/filename18:04
dromerER_A: where do you put that?18:04
ER_Anormally via "run application"18:05

blake_i still can't edit the menu19:09
blake_i miss gnome19:09
cody-somervillepeter__, so how is gnome taking over?19:10
blake_how can i remove shit from the menu in xubuntu?!19:11
blake_this is crazy19:11
blake_xfce is hugely flawed19:11
th0rblake_, that attitude isn't getting you anywhere...haven't you figured that out yet?19:11
blake_i figured out that the reason nobody is answering is becuase nobody has any idea19:12
blake_gnome is so much easier19:12
blake_=[19:12
Myrtti...19:12
Myrttithen install gnome19:12
Myrttino but really19:12
Myrttijust out of the blue...19:12
peter__not sure, i have gnome icons and whenver i right click my desktop to change my background i get some gnome error and it brings up the gnome background changer19:12
Myrttihm19:12
Myrttiblake_: do a cp /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml19:13
Myrttithen replace the default menu with that new copy of yours19:14
Myrttiand edit it as much as you want19:14
blake_pfft19:14
blake_no editor?19:14
blake_i don't want to edit it with text editor19:14
Myrttiyes, you can edit that with the said editor19:14
blake_which said editor?19:14
blake_gnome editor?19:14
Myrttithe xfce4 one19:14
Myrttihaving said that19:15
MyrttiI've fiddled with that two years ago19:15
Myrttiso can't help you more19:15
Myrttibut just as a starting point, hope that helps19:15
blake_no, it's already editing /home/blake/.config/xfce4/desktop.menu.xml19:15
th0rMyrtti, he could just install Alacarte...not that it even works in gnome19:15
blake_but that doesn't have the actual applications19:15
blake_you understand?19:15
blake_that only has something called "--- include ---"19:16
blake_for where the applications are19:16
Myrttith0r: sure19:17
Myrttiblake_: install alacarte, rejoice, be happy19:17
th0ror better yet...install windows so you don't have to think about it19:17
blake_will do19:17
blake_i don't mind thinking, but editing the menu should be simple19:18
th0rlike in windows19:18
Myrttihttp://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/341/19:18
blake_whoa, alacarte is fucking huge19:18
blake_i need that just to edit the menu?19:18
Myrttiblake_: I've already said mind the language19:19
blake_good god, how old are the bunch of you?19:19
th0rold enough to know how to behave19:19
Myrttidoes it matter?19:19
blake_by the way, alacarte does not work19:21
blake_the same programs still persist19:21
th0ralacarte is only 1.2MB...don't know how that can qualify as huge.19:21
blake_well it doesn't work regardless of the size19:21
blake_it doesn't edit the xubuntu menu19:21
blake_i wish xfce "just worked" like gnome19:22
* blake_ sighs19:22
th0rlike windows19:22
blake_sure, like windows19:22
blake_nothing wrong with being able to do simple tasks in a simple way19:22
blake_just19:22
blake_like windows19:22
th0rlinux used to be such a great place to hide from the marching mornons19:22
blake_too bad you have no life19:22

Myrttiho-hum19:23
Myrttican we please be civil?19:23
MyrttiI'm getting a tad bored here looking at this conversation that is not going anywhere19:23
Myrttiblake_: if it's gnome you want, then install gnome19:23
blake_i don't, i like that xfce is lighter19:23
blake_i just want to edit the menu19:24
blake_and nobody knows how19:24
Myrttiblake_: I have tried to give you some points to start with editing the menu - I'm sorry, I've not had the need to do it myself so I don't know19:24
th0rMyrtti, and some of us who do know don't respond kindly to the vocabulary19:24
Myrttithat is the downside of using a minority version of a majority distribution of a minority operating system19:24
Myrttipeople just don't know, or those who know, aren't here19:25
Myrttiblake_: have you tried the forums?19:25
Myrttiblake_: perhaps someone in ubuntuforums has the answer already19:25
blake_no19:25
blake_i will try that19:25
Myrttithank you19:25
blake_uh oh19:29
