geniisparr: usually command:          mount                by itself will report either iso9660 or udf filesystem of a cd in the drive mounted normally at either /media/cdrom  or sometimes just /cdrom01:29
sparrgenii: the drive is not mounted01:29
geniisparr: Are you using KDE or Gnome? Since you are double-posting this issue to both #ubuntu and here01:30
sparri am currently running both01:30
sparrKDE on :0 and Gnome on :101:30
geniiOK fair enough :)01:31
sparrso if any utilities of either would be helpful, shoot01:31
geniisparr: Likely there is no /etc/fstab entry to automount a cdrom or dvd when it finds one there.01:32
sparri have an entry for /dev/hdb mounted as /media/cdrom001:32
geniisparr: Please copy the 1 line from /etc/fstab regarding it01:33

sparrdata CDs automount properly, and pop up the appropriate dialogs in KDE and gnome01:34
geniisparr: The "noauto" there might be the problem01:34
sparrnoauto just means not to mount at boot and "mount -a" time01:34
geniisparr: So cds are working properly but not a specific dvd you have?01:35
geniiI guess he's occupied arguing there in #ubuntu01:38

sparrit's a fun cycle01:39
geniisparr: Yup. But I gather it's a dvd which is not mounting or so?01:40
sparrit wont recognize data DVDs either01:40
sparraudio and data CDs, good01:40
sparrDVDs, no good01:41
sparrit recently stopped being able to burn DVDs as well.  blank DVDs are recognized by the computer, but the burn fails01:41
sparrim hoping its a software issue, but it could easily be a hardware problem01:41
geniiHmm. Data dvds should be using just UDF2 unless they are the oddball type which Vista makes on backups (UDF2.5 or so).01:42
geniisparr: Testing the drive in another box might be a good idea to eliminate hardware fail of the dvd laser01:42
sparrdont have another box handy :(01:42
sparrand the data DVDs are UDF2 and/or ISO01:43
geniisparr: Does it let you manually mount for instance a data dvd using udf as fs type?01:43
sparrthe /dev/hdb device doesnt exist when i insert a DVD01:44

dennisterthat was with usb mouse, have unplugged, inserted ps2 mouse instead of usb...will see if boots up02:23
dennisteri always use usb mice on my main computer...never seen this prob before02:24
geniidennister: Some onboard usb controllers which also control the ps2 ports need the:     usb-handoff      kernel option at boot as I said earlier. Also in this specific case it may be X knew of the previous mouse which was usb and so the ps2 one didn't work since the default pointing device likely the usb one inthe xorg.conf or so02:26
dennistergenii: yes, it's gotta be the particular usb controller of this compaq machine...so i should probably edit grub / menu.list to add the "usb-handoff" as an option, right?02:29

bradfordput them to desktop02:36
[ifr0g]genii, nope.02:37
dennistergenii: well i'd love to try it, but now i can't get pc to get past compaq splash into grub...not with usb mouse, not with ps2 mouse, not with no mouse ( pretty sure I have it configured to halt on no error except keyboard) but i could be confusing this system of judy's with the ones i usually do)02:38
geniibradford: OK. So make now a folder on desktop called "i3945"            and put those files in there. Then in Konsole:    sudo cp ~/Desktop/i3945/* /lib/firmware/i3945                that should copy them over. ubuntu_im gonna give it a try thanks genii03:37
geniiubuntu_: telinit  is a command which tells the computer to go to a certain run level. So on ubuntu run levels 2,3,4 and 5 are for multiuser which can run X and so on. Runlevel 0 is halt and runlevel 6 is reboot03:38
geniiRunlevel 1 is what the system goes to in recovery kernel so telinit 2 is needed to change it03:38

ubottuTo install a Java compiler/interpreter on Ubuntu, look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java - For the Sun Java runtime install sun-java5-jre or sun-java6-jre from the !Multiverse repository. Please don't use Adept to install Java if you are on Kubuntu !Dapper04:44

geniiubuntu_: When you issued the command of:      sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg                it would have asked quite a few questions like what keyboard, etc. At that point one at least one of the questions would have been about the video card make or driver, to which when unsure, a person puts "vesa"04:45

CostaRicanQuakersomeone told me that even if i'm on ubuntu i should install a firewall or something, i thought that with ubuntu i could forget about malware viruses and such07:31
CostaRicanQuakersince it's linux07:31
flaccidyeah you do not need a firewall, particularly because out of box there are no open ports listening either07:32
CostaRicanQuakerso i shouldn't worry about "prrotecting my home network"? this guy was a net engineer but he was on windows07:33
ubottuUbuntu, like any other linux distribution, has firewall capabilities built-in. The firewall is managed using the 'iptables' command (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo), or GUI applications such as Firestarter (Gnome) or Guarddog (KDE).07:34
jussi01CostaRicanQuaker: as it says, the firewall is built in already. if you want to manage it in any way, I would install guarddog07:35
CostaRicanQuakerjussi: so kubuntu/xubuntu/ubuntu is completely safe to install at my NGO's network?07:35
flaccidCostaRicanQuaker: well is your ubuntu machine acting as your router? i doubt it is. you are probably behind a hardware router/firewall..07:35
jussi01CostaRicanQuaker: come on, thats a pretty loaded question- but as safe or safer than windows imho07:36
CostaRicanQuakerflaccid: jussi: my concern is this, i want to install kubuntu/ubuntu at my NGO's now they use a wireless router and have had attacks07:36

flaccid1. i don't know what NGO is 2. out of the box there are no ports open so they can't get in anyway07:37
CostaRicanQuakerso if install kubuntu at the peace centre's it will be bydefault safer than windows'07:37
CostaRicanQuakeror should i THEN install guarddog?07:37
flaccidlike jussi01 was saying, thats a loaded question. and like i've said twice, there are no ports open07:38
Agent_bobhehehe   i think i messed up.  what kind of time stamp is this ?  15:01AM07:38
jussi01CostaRicanQuaker: guarddog is just a front end for managing iptables - which is already installed07:39
flaccidi think there is enough evidence around to say in general that Linux is safter than Windows07:39
CostaRicanQuakerso if anyone asks at the NGO and say theyhave to set up a router security system or something07:39
CostaRicanQuakeri can just tell them it's already installed in ubuntu and refer to that link?07:39
jussi01CostaRicanQuaker: ubuntu has a firewall thats what you were asking I beleive - its built in by default07:40
Agent_bobinstalled != configured   but in general terms yes.07:40

mefistofeleforce: well isn't that a son of a bitch23:09
mefistofelenow we're gettin somewhere23:09
forcemefistofele: Really I'm tired with this wireless :(23:10
vertic23_hey, how can I check what kind of ram I need in my PC?23:13
mefistofeleforce: are you sure you have 3945bg?23:13
vertic23_I got a P III23:13
mefistofelevertic23_: probably need like PC133 DIMMS or something like that23:14
vertic23_SD or DDR that would be?23:14
vertic23_okay, kubuntu runs quite well on this machine23:15
vertic23_256 mb only, but it's "ok"!23:15
forcemefistofele: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945BG, yeah sure 100%23:16
mefistofelehmm oookay23:16
mefistofeleforce: well, try this then...  sudo modprobe ipw394523:17
forcemefistofele: FATAL: Module ipw3945 not found.23:19

jeremeI can't seem to do dual display on kde3 with RandR without manually running xrandr every time I login...  I am using the radeon driver...  Anyone get this to work?23:22
pc_hello is it possible to load windows 98 on Kubutu?23:24
jeremepc_: sure, using VirtualBox or vmware23:24
jeremepc_: or any other virtualization software23:24
pc_on a older pc?23:24
jeremewell virtualization won't work super great on an old PC, but how old are you talking?23:25
mefistofeleforce: do you still have network manager running?23:25
forcemefistofele: yeah it is in systry23:25
mefistofeleforce: could you close it for a minute?23:26
jeremepc_: P4?23:26
forcemefistofele: i close it now23:27
pc_no intel celeron23:27
jeremewell, it could probably work... just not very fast23:27
jerememmm celery23:27
mefistofeleforce: try doing iwlist wlan0 scanning again23:27
jeremeshoot you could over clock that thing to 2GHz ;)23:27
pc_I want to do this as an experiment23:27
jeremewhat is your objective?23:27
pc_Another question23:27
forcemefistofele: wlan0     Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable23:28
mefistofeleahhhh god dammit23:28
pc_I have a amd 64bit Gateway I was wondering would I be able to put on win 98SE? Then install Kubuntu on that?23:29
vertic23_why would one do that?23:29
mefistofelehey, 98 was a good os23:29
forcemefistofele: by the way wlan0 assigned ip
pc_well I had xp and a virus done it in23:29
=== BARBEESHA is now known as EnMasse187
mefistofelepc_: you should be able to do that23:30
forcemefistofele: default ip23:30
mefistofeleforce: well, it got one at elast23:30
jeremewin98 on a 64-bit proc probably won't happen23:30
pc_I had restore disks but none of them work anymore23:30
=== grzes is now known as grzes^
jeremeor it would be forced into 32-bit if that's even possible23:30
vertic23_I think it is, jereme23:31
mefistofelepc_: do you have more than 4 gigs of ram?23:31
pc_I think it probably wouldn't work23:31
vertic23_I mean on all "modern" CPUs you can do that23:31
jeremebut when you say "put win98 on kubuntu" or "put kubuntu on win98" I'm not sure what you mean...23:31
pc_no I have 2 on that machine23:31
vertic23_but I think the kernel won't support that new CPUs23:31
jeremebecause you can dual boot, do virtualization,23:31
jeremeuse a liveCD23:31
EnMasse187hi, are there any working nintendo ds emulators for linux, i've heard desmume works, it needs gtk, i installed it and try to run it but on startup it closes...23:31
mefistofelepc_: also, it might not support all your hardware23:31
vertic23_just put in a kubuntu,23:31
mefistofelevertic23_: it's still x86.23:31
vertic23_and then be happy23:31
vertic23_mefistofele: but what about all the other drivers nobody wrote...23:32
pc_See here the thing I need some form of windows to run magic Jack voip telephone but I also want Kubuntu I like it23:33
vertic23_magic jack voip?23:33
vertic23_what's that?23:33
mefistofeleyeah... I wonder if sata is even supported at all23:33
vertic23_don't think so ^^23:33
pc_It is a box that plugs into the usb port and allows me to make phone calls but it need windows to do this23:34
vertic23_how about ebay? ^^23:34
vertic23_and why win98 anyways?!23:34
vertic23_win2k is a 1000 times better idea23:34
jeremesata in 98?23:35
jeremethere is no sata in 9823:35
jeremethere's just no way23:35
forcemefistofele: i will try again with wlan but i should disconnectd from lan to see again. Thanks23:35
vertic23_...we can be happy that USB works :P somehow23:35
jeremeata, yes, sata, nohaps23:35
pc_Right now I have Kubuntu it the amd 64bit gateway... And I have win 98SE on disk from the old days23:35
jeremeUSB works'ish23:35
mefistofelepc_: you could also run windows via a virtual machine for your phone23:35
jeremeback in '98 we still called it "plug-n-pray"23:35
vertic23_lmao - that's what I meant23:35
pc_yes Jeremy your right23:36
vertic23_hehe, didn't know that one23:36
vertic23_will write it onto my wall23:36
pc_is virtual machine linus based?23:36
vertic23_linus torvald?23:36
jeremepc_, a virtual machine can be linux based23:36
vertic23_pc_: try it...23:36
mefistofelepc_: yea, you could use qemu or ... what the hell is the name of that really popular one23:36
jeremepc_: for example, Sun's free VirtualBox product runs on Linux, Windows and OS X (possibly more to...)23:36
vertic23_can USB devices be passed through?23:37
jeremeas does vmware23:37
kwuchhello, rename of files is impossible, after a migration from gnome to kde. ä ö ü are replaced by ? . How can i fix this?23:37
jeremeyou're more likely to have usb success if you install kubuntu and run 98 in a VM than the other way around23:37
vertic23_yes, jereme - that was my question23:37
jeremeI'm willing to bet that virtualbox, vwmare and pals won't run on 9823:37
vertic23_I will do that soon - with "linux" + "windows"23:37
jeremeso running a win98 VM within linux is the better option23:37
vertic23_of course that way...23:38
vertic23_win98 as main os would be... hehe23:38
jeremeplus it keeps the yucky winders contained23:38
vertic23_win98 as main OS was cool when win95 was "in"23:38
pc_I prefer running 98 within Kubuntu23:38
vertic23_of course you do ;)23:39
pc_So do you think I can do this?23:39
vertic23_worth a try!23:39
vertic23_chances are not bad23:39
jeremepc_: I think the only think that might go wrong is it might be a little sluggish23:39
pc_Is vmware free?23:39
jeremevmware is free, and so is virtualbox23:39
vertic23_I don't like virtualbox because it's java23:40
pc_so the better is vmware?23:40
jereme</programming joke>23:40
=== root is now known as Guest92931
vertic23_I was always good with vmware - I like it...23:40
jeremepc_: vmware has been in the game a long time23:40
vertic23_my first try with virtualbox was not so ....lucky23:41
jeremeI've had great luck with virtualbox23:41
pc_Can I get it through synaptic?23:41
jeremebut it's hard to argue with vmware being the best free option23:41
vertic23_well - you're a smart programmer ;)23:41
jeremethere are no vmware packages... just download it from their site23:41
jeremenavigating to the free version can be somewhat tricky23:41
jeremelet me find it23:41
jeremedamn they moved it again23:42
jeremethis might take a second23:42
pc_ok take your time23:42
vertic23_hehe, like always... I love all those download sites - especially linux programs ...NO - not ONE download (the popular one which everybody wants) is just on top - no you can choose between CSV / beta, unstable - and in between is the one everybody wants :P23:43
jeremewell in the case of vmware, you choose from the 50 different enterprise version that cost money23:43
jeremeand the tiny free version hidden somewhere within23:43
jeremeit's like playing "Where's Waldo"23:43
vertic23_yeah - I forgot the commercial sites ;)23:44
vertic23_hehe, love him ^^23:44
vertic23_still got three books here23:44
jeremewhere's the vmware server console now on their site?23:45
jeremethey should make their site harder to browse23:46
jeremethen I could just poke myself in the eye instead of looking for their products23:46
pc_thanks Jeremy!  Will it be difficult to do?23:46
jeremepoking me in the eye?  no it's easy23:47
jeremejust stick out your finger23:47
jeremeas for vmware, the hardest part is installing it23:47
jeremeit's easy after that23:47
pc_thanks jereme23:47
jeremeyou'll want the "VMWare Server for Linux" Binary (.tar.gz) and "VMWare Server Linux client package" which contains vmware-server-console which is how you connect to vmware server23:48
jeremeah crap, I've got a bug to fix over here, bbiab23:48
