bassboii used wine to install a game on here, using xubuntu 8.04, and it created an "Other" section in my apps menu, containing the game I installed... although, the game doesn't work and i've removed it using wine, but now the "Other" section stays... how would i remove it00:26
TheSheepbassboi: it's in ~/.local/share/applications00:28

AlexJPhello, how do i set the default audio device if i have more than 1 soundcard01:22
glitsj16AlexJP: hi again .. there's also a package called "asoundconf-gtk" that offers a GUI way to do that it seems, just found out ..01:33
David-AHow do I get a network graph in the panel? (I tried install xfce4-xfapplet-plugin but it seem I have to install alot of gnome stuff befor I can use it)01:39
th0rDavid-A, check gkrellm01:39
th0rDavid-A, it won't be in the panel...but I have run it for about a decade now...wouldn't want linux without it01:40
David-AI have a cpu graph in the panel and would like the netw too. so it wont overlap or be overlapped by other windows.01:43
th0rDavid-A, gkrellm will put a ton of stuff in a stack...it is highly configurable and there are a good number of plugins for it as well. I also found it to be more efficient than the panel plugins...uses less memory and less cpu01:45
David-Ath0r: how do you get it out of the way but still visible?01:46
th0rDavid-A, just let it sit on the desktop...it sits under everything else unless I click on it, so it is pretty inobtrusive01:46
th0rDavid-A, I hardly run anything maximized, so there is always a little space betweeen the windows and the screen edge, so if I need to see the info in gkrellm I just click on it and it pops to the top01:47
David-Ath0r: I never maximize too, but there is seldom a corner I can count on being unused.01:48
th0rDavid-A, I keep gkrellm along the right side of the screen. I like to keep an eye on the network, cpu and memory, and this also puts the volume controls where they are usable.01:50
th0rDavid-A, in a stack about half the height of the screen I have cpu, memory, wifi, network, battery, volume, webcam, hard drive, and a screenshot button01:51
David-A"click on it": I have the clock and the cpu graph in the panel, and I have tried to have the panel auto-hide, but wasnt good, because i had to move the mouse to see clock or cpu. I think move the mouse plus click is too much work for me. :)01:51
th0rDavid-A, you can always make it stay on top...but I find that annoying01:51
th0rDavid-A, In fact, I am on a quest to find out how to make the xfce panels NOT stay-on-top01:52
David-Ainteresting. did you try autohide?01:52
th0rDavid-A, yeah...I have two of them autohide now, but would like to make them act like normal windows01:53
David-Ath0r: there ara about 30 plugins for gkrellm. any needed for cpu graph, netw graph and digital clock, or are they builtin?01:56
th0rDavid-A, those are all built in, but you should take a look at some of the others. Also, take a look at the homepage...there are a ton of themes and some of them are very nice01:57
th0rDavid-A,  the homepage is actually on page two of the google search ... http://www.muhri.net/gkrellm/01:58
th0rDavid-A, also be aware you can turn off things that are built into the stack so you only show what you want01:58
David-Ath0r: ok, i am in gkrellm's config dialog now, i'll see what it can do for me. thanks!02:00
alyawnHi all... I have an external USB HDD and it is partitioned with NTFS, can I mount it with write privs?02:08
glitsj16alyawn: there's a package called ntfs-config with which you can configure it that way yes, there's a nice howto with screenshots at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/widows-ntfs-partitions-readwrite-support-made-easy-in-ubuntu-feisty.html (for feisty, but still works the same in hardy)02:14
alyawnglitsj16: Thanks for the info02:18
alyawnlooks exactly like what I need!02:18
glitsj16alyawn: very welcome02:18
Hadenis there a program for keying macros?  i.e. I want to repeat a set of keystrokes for the next 20 hours; any ideas? >.<02:23
PMantisI just installed xubuntu-desktop onto ubuntu-server-amd64. When I login through gdm, I get a heron background with an xterm - no panel, no WM. Diagnostic steps?02:23
PMantisWhen I manually run xfwm4 and xfce4-panel manaully, it's ok.02:24
th0rPMantis, are those two running when you get the terminal and the heron?02:25
PMantisno02:25
zaapielsup02:25
PMantisOne other thing happening: the menus, and the border around the term keep changing... like the human theme is fighting with another theme.02:26
th0rPMantis, do you have gnome installed? I have encountered such problems after installing xfce on a gnome ubuntu02:26
PMantisI never install gnome02:26
glitsj16PMantis: do you run a xfce session in gdm ?02:27
PMantisdpkg-reconfigure gdm doesn't give any options, so it's the only DM installed.02:28
th0rPMantis, you need to run 'startxfce4' if I remember correctly02:28
PMantisglitsj16: Yes, GDM show the login screen, XFCE is supposed to provide the desktop.02:28
PMantisShouldn't the xinitrc handle that?02:28
th0rPMantis, I think you can add it to one of the files in ~..... .profile or .bashrc or maybe .xinitrc?02:29
th0rPMantis,  I am not on my ubuntu machine right now so I can't tell you for sure02:29
th0rPMantis, if I remember correctly the default is to run twm, which just gives you a terminal02:30
glitsj16PMantis: not sure, they changed xubuntu-defaults recently and that changed the default GDM session from xinitrc to something else, easily checked i suppose via the settings > login window (or gksy /usr/sbin/gdmsetup)02:30
PMantisI ran gdmsetup over SSH to config this02:30
PMantisI setup an identical server last week, except it was JeOS based.02:31
PMantisThat's still running fine. I have an NFS mounted /home, and ldap auth. Both servers use the same /home and same ldap through pam.02:31
PMantisI can login to one server w/o issues. but the new one won't load properly.02:32
glitsj16PMantis: okay, i was thinking that changing the default session in gdm to xfce might autostart xfwm etc.02:33
* PMantis chcks gdmsetup02:33
cody-somervilleHello02:33
glitsj16hi cody-somerville02:34
PMantisThis is so weird.02:34
th0rPMantis, you should be aware that not all linux distros will start the wm in the same way02:35
PMantisAs I'm typing in the terminal, the fonts of "File edit view..." keep changing, the colors change.02:35
PMantisth0r: True, but I rarely use anything except *buntu02:35
cody-somervillePMantis, please provide output of: ps ux | cat02:35
th0rPMantis, I thought you said the other machine was JeOS02:36
PMantisYeah:  http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/jeos02:36
th0rPMantis, learn something new every day <smile>02:37
PMantis:-)02:37
PMantisth0r: So, basically the same thing, just diff kernel02:37
PMantiscody-somerville: You prefer that to be ran from an X session?02:37
th0rPMantis, You might want to look closer just to make sure. With that small footprint I wouldn't be surprised if the start sequence hasn't been tailored02:38
PMantiscody-somerville: And why pipe through cat?02:38
cody-somervillePMantis, so that I get the entire thing instead of it being cut off02:38
glitsj16th0r: on a completely different note, i read that you are looking for a way to get your panels to your liking .. have you tried devilspie ?02:39
PMantisJeOS is a server based, just like the Ubuntu-server I installed. I assume it's the same once I install xubuntu-desktop02:39
PMantiscody-somerville: Neat trick02:40
zaapielcan xubuntu do compiz?02:41
PMantiscody-somerville: OK, particular pastebin you like, or /query it to you ?  :)02:41
zaapiellike with the wiggly windows and what not02:41
cody-somervillezaapiel, yup02:41
zaapielcool02:41
glitsj16zaapiel: if your graphics supports it yes02:41
cody-somervillePMantis, pastebin.ubuntu.com02:41
zaapielhow? :D02:41
th0rglitsj16, no..hadn't heard of it. I have the panels set up like i want, but I want them to behave as normal windows instead of staying on top all the time02:41
zaapieli got the nvidia driver glitsj1602:41
zaapielso i got hardware accell02:41

cody-somervillePMantis, the xfce4 session isn't starting02:43
glitsj16th0r: it's a window-matching utility and in the repo's, might work .. it has a GUI as well, more info at http://burtonini.com/blog/computers/devilspie02:43
cody-somervillePMantis, pastebin ~/.dmrc02:43
PMantiscody-somerville: I know that. :)02:43
=== Zeeded|AFK is now known as Zeeded
cody-somervillePMantis, Click session in gdm and click xfce4 and then click make it default session02:44
alyawnhmm... still can't mount my external hdd w/ ntfs02:44
alyawnoops: The NTFS partition is hibernated.02:44
glitsj16alyawn: so that ntfs-config package didn't do the trick ? any relevant errors ?02:45
PMantiscody-somerville: Only 2 lines in ~/.dmrc: [Desktop]\n Session=default02:45
glitsj16alyawn: ah well that would explain things :)02:45
alyawnnope... when I try to mount by hand I get the "hibernated" error above02:45
PMantiscody-somerville: Hmmm, choosing the session in GDM worked! But I selected xfce with gdmsetup!. I dont' get that.02:46
cody-somervillePMantis, probably because of the .dmrc overrode that02:46
alyawnglitsj16: yes it does explain it, but now to fix it...02:46
PMantisThat's the same /home that used on our other server.. so it would've overrode that on THAT serve, too, wouldn't it??02:47
th0rglitsj16, thanks...I installed devilspie just now and will fetch the gui when I get a chance02:47
glitsj16alyawn: did you go to hibernate on that drive under windows or anything ?02:47
PMantiscody-somerville: Both machines use NFS mounted /home to the same export.02:47
alyawnglitsj16: no clue... the truth is that it probably wasn't shutdown properly02:47
PMantisHmmmm02:47
cody-somervillePMantis, Why would it not then?02:48
glitsj16alyawn: in that case i'd suggest rebooting into windows and get a clean shutdown02:48
alyawnglitsj16, I'm not sure that's possible... It's a laptop hdd and I no longer have the original hardware02:49
cody-somervillealyawn, use ntfs tools then02:49
PMantiscody-somerville: That's my point - the .dmrc file exists on both server in my /home, since it's NFS /home. both servers have xfce4 & gdm, no gnome, no kde, etc. If the .gdmrc is at fault, it should cause issues on both servers. Hmmm02:49
cody-somervillePMantis, it may very well have been causing issues you were unaware of02:50
alyawncody-somerville, you mean ntfsprogs... apt-getting now02:50
PMantiscody-somerville: Maybe... I just DELETED the file, and I can login fine... so it was the file causing the problem. weird!02:50
* cody-somerville nods.02:51
cody-somervilleBtw, who is psyched for Xubuntu Intrepid 8.10???!! :D02:51
PMantiscody-somerville: I'm still a little flabbergasted. Either way, thanks!!02:51

cody-somervilleSuperMonster, yes02:52
PMantiscody-somerville: And a 'ls -l /home/*/.dmrc' revealed a few of those buggers02:53
cody-somervillePMantis, did you delete them all?02:55
PMantiscody-somerville: yup02:55
PMantisGotta have this new server ready for monday02:56

alyawnis there a safe way to "disconnect" a usb hdd? or is umounting enough?03:02
gotischso how do i disable that? its like 3 times louder then anything else03:02
PMantiscody-somerville:  This brings up another point - if they're on a thin client using XDMCP, *why* should the be given a "shutdown" option on the logoff menu? None of them have permission to shut down the server! :)03:03
cody-somervillePMantis, you can use kiosk mode to disable that option03:04
cody-somervillealyawn, yes, unmounting makes it safe03:04
PMantiscody-somerville: Oh, do tell.03:04

cody-somervillePMantis, particularly: http://www.xfce.org/documentation/4.2/manuals/xfce4-session#xfsm-kiosk-mode03:05

cody-somervillePMantis, actually...03:10

eshatHello @All: When I try to access a partition, gnome says: "Cannot mount volume. You are not privileged to mount this volume." although I am i the plugdev group, any ideas what causes this problem ?12:57
AlexJPeshat: just guessing here, but have you tried sudo?13:05
AlexJPanyone know where i can get an nvidia geforce 4 ti 4200 driver?13:15
AlexJPhello, i have just installed mpg123, but it hasnt shown up. anyone know where it will be?14:27
slow-motionhi14:32
AlexJPhey14:38
j1mcAlexJP: mpg123 is a command-line based music player.  :)14:44
AlexJPjlmc oh yeah14:45
AlexJPjlmc lol thats no good :P14:45
j1mc:)  so it wouldn't show up in your menu14:45
AlexJPnah i just did a cmd line mpg12314:45
AlexJPdont suppose you know of a good, light mp3 player, with a gui14:46
j1mclet me check something14:46
AlexJPjlmc sure14:48
j1mchow lightweight do you need it to be?14:48
AlexJPwell, it doesnt reall matter, but i just want it to be fast14:49
j1mcif you need something very lightweight, i might suggest xmms, but it's a little old school.14:49
AlexJPi will check it out14:49
j1mcotherwise, exaile or quod-libet would provide a bit more functionality, but would be a little heavier.14:49
j1mcstill not as heavy as rhythmbox or banshee.14:49
AlexJPwell, i have been using totem14:50
j1mcand certainly not as heavy (on a gtk-based system) as amarok.14:50
AlexJPno, amarok wa very heavy when i tried it14:50
AlexJPwould rhythmbox be lighter than totem?14:50
j1mcum, on xubuntu rhythmbox tries to install a bunch of gnome stuff... rhythmbox would be heavier than totem.14:51
AlexJPoh ok14:52
j1mcbut totem (although it can play music) isn't really much of a music player.14:52
AlexJPno14:53
AlexJPits a bit useless14:53
AlexJPwhat does the universe and multiverse things in synaptic mean?14:53
j1mcgood question.  there are 3 different 'levels' within the repositories.14:56
j1mcmain, universe, and multiverse14:56
j1mcmain is where all of the core stuff goes - this stuff is supported by canonical.14:57
j1mcuniverse is supported by the community, but is still 'free as in freedom' software.14:57
j1mcmultiverse software still doesn't cost any money, but doesn't live up to the 'free as in freedom' status of the other software.  it likely isn't fully open source.14:58
j1mcstuff like mp3 support or binary drivers would be in multiverse.14:58
AlexJPoh i see, cool15:00
AlexJPhey, in exaile's track list, do you have to display albums?15:01
AlexJPif rather click an artist and see all songs15:01
j1mci dunno... :/  i don't really use exaile.  sorry.15:01
AlexJPno worries15:01
AlexJPwhat do you use15:02
j1mcif you'd like, there's an #exaile channel where you can ask those kinds of questions.15:02
* AlexJP joins #exaile @P15:02
j1mclately i've been using songbird.  it's not in the repos.  you have to install it manually, but there are instructions on how to do it.  it's still in beta, and isn't particularly lightweight.15:03
j1mci gotta run for now.  best of luck to you.15:03
AlexJPsee you mate15:03

jimmy_the_saintI found a solution to a lot of complaint regarding power features in Xubuntu (tested on amd64, I don't know about i386)  The gnome-screensaver program is not set to run at startup.  without it, gnome power manager is useless.  by adding the program to the autostart apps issues found in 6 threads that i have identified are fixed.  I don't know if there is a way to roll out an update, but if there is, I think this would s21:52
jimmy_the_saintand good evening then!!21:52

AlexJPhey does anyone know if its possible to install googleearth in xubuntu21:54
jimmy_the_saintis there a way to send out an update for this?  It is just a matter of enabling an additional autostart app, but I think man users would just suffer21:54
