geniiAgent_bob: A couple even, perhaps :)02:35
Agent_bobhttp://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d5d5e9827 <<< have a look02:35
Agent_bobgenii not for bugs.  it works ok here.02:35
geniilooking02:36
Agent_bobgenii as you know i run "nosuid" system   and often don't use partitions on hdds   well anyway, that causes an issue with accessing floppy disks.  users can't mount them.    so i developed that "tarfs" to allow users dirrect affess to fd0 without needing root.   "it works for me."   but i was thinking,  couldn't we develop that into a backup system for hdd partitions too ?02:38
Agent_bobs/affess/access/ maybe02:38
geniiAgent_bob: Conceivably yes02:38
Agent_bobwhat it does is writes a tar archive dirrectly to the device and doesn't use a file system at all02:39
Agent_bobnow.     can you off hand think of any known limitations on that as far as a hdd partition migh be conserned ?02:40
geniiAgent_bob: Yeah I sort of got the gist ;) The idea is sound. Might need some capacity checking routine to make sure the write does not exceed media capacity.02:40
Agent_boblike would the archive grow too large to be accessable ?   or would it try to write beyond the partition bondaries ?02:40
geniiSee above :)02:41
geniiAgent_bob: Yes, as is it would just blindly hit the end and error out02:41
Agent_bobi have treid it with too much data for a floppy it just clips the end of the archive off... no damage really02:41
geniiMaybe some post-compare for size02:42
Agent_bobmaybe...02:42
Agent_bobit's not logical to make a local archive and then copy it over if you are going to backup a running system....   but that would even work on the floppies02:43
geniiSpanning would be a good feature02:44
Agent_bobfloppies are so outdated though.  i was just wondering if there was a more "general public" use for it.02:44
Agent_bobgenii i think it can...   tar has that capability and it is totally tar02:44

Agent_bobhmmm floppies are actually a little bigger with tarfs   seeing that it uses the entire disk not just the data area02:56

ign0ramusdr_willis: not too sure, but it works on my machine.  switching to Qt-Curve also works, but borks my font sizes04:06

dr_WillisMay been th sites fault.04:07
ign0ramusgenii: i also have that package installed- do you have your GTK apps set to use KDE Styles in Kcontrol?04:07

chris____hi i am trying to update my girlfriends laptop to 8.04. I initialized the process through apt's kde frontend. The machine get's stuck when it comes to locales generation. I had it sitting here over night an the machine couldn't even finish to build one locale.09:12
pagchris____, you're not the only one who has encountered that problem09:13
chris____can i force the system to skip the locale update an go on with the rest of the packages09:13
chris____pag: is there a best practise to solve it?09:13
pagchris____, dunno about 'the best', I know couple of tricks that might help09:15
chris____i appreciate any hint09:15
pagchris____, for example killing the graphical frontend and finishing the upgrade via command line09:15
chris____is it sufficient to kill kdm?09:16
pagchris____, ctrl+alt+esc and click on the graphical updater – no need to kill all the desktop09:17
chris____i currently have an system that cant start kde. so i logged into a terminal session and executed apt-get update there.09:18
chris____graphical updater killed long ago and rebooted several times09:18
chris____than i follow the message to use dpkg --configure -a09:19
chris____as apt states that dpkg was interrupted09:19
pag!aptfix | chris____09:19
ubottuchris____: If an APT front-end crashed and your database is locked, try this in a !terminal: « sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a »09:19
chris____when entering the above command it sits there forever pretending to generate locales09:19

chris____after the reboot i get no more lock message.09:20
fatalerror90123im new to ubuntu hows everyone09:21
chris____so i will know what to do next time instead of a reboot :)09:21
pagchris____, apparantly it would like real root piveledges, not sudo-ones – boot into recovery mode with grub and start the dpkg --configure -a  again09:21
chris____i have logged in the console. did sudo su09:21
chris____whoami says i am root09:22
chris____when executing dpkg --configure -a it states: setting up locales (2.7.9-4) ...09:22
chris____generating locales...09:23
chris____en_AU.UTF-8 ...09:23
pagchris____, try it still – people seem to got it working that way09:23
chris____and there it is. cursor flashing09:23
chris____no movement09:23
pagchris____, also booting into earlier kernel seem to do the job09:24
chris____so you suggest to use sudo dpkg... instead of getting root by using sudo su before09:24
chris____i will try both09:24
chris____how long should it take to generate a single locale on a p4 mobile at about 2.2 ghz?09:26
pagchris____, if it works – less than 30 s09:26
chris____sudo didn't do the trick09:27
chris____i am going to reboot the machine. god that i have my laptop still up and running to look out for help :)09:27

NyadHi, what command must I type in to see a list of all installed software on my pc via the command line?13:32
Tm_TNyad: dpkg --get-selections13:32
Nyadthanks Tm_T, your dynamite!13:33
bertholdtopenmoko seems really interesting!13:33
Tm_TNyad: be warned, it's a looong list, you propably would like to get it into text file, if so, do this: dpkg --get-selections > textfile.txt13:33
Nyadtnx, I just piped it to less13:34
Tm_Theh, that's good too13:34
Tm_TNyad: though, as you can see, it lists also what have been uninstalled, so you might like to grep if needed13:35
Jucato"dpkg -l" too13:36
NyadTm_T,  so I type  something like ,   dpkg --get-selections | grep install | less13:37
Tm_TI bet there's other methods too13:37
Tm_TNyad: yes13:37
Nyadthat still gives me all the deinstall packages13:38
Jucatouse "grep -v deinstall"13:38
Tm_Tnngh, yeah13:38
* Tm_T is trying to do his work so isn't fully with you guys13:39
NyadJucato, that works nicely, but now if I have say more than just install and deinstall, how do I force grep to pick up complete words called install?13:40
JucatoNyad: grep install | grep -v deinstall :)13:40
Tm_TNyad: or use regexp13:41
Nyadya but what if I had more than just 2 things in the list, say I had 100 words that have 'install' inside them, then it would be too long13:41
Tm_TNyad: grep -e '\ install' ?13:42
Tm_Tor even grep -e '\ install\ '13:42
Nyadfor example I may have 'install5', 'deinstall' , 'fakeinstall', 'oddinstall' and 'install'   in a list, how do I grab only that 'install'  and not the others13:43
Tm_Tno, not -e but -G I think13:44
ahoxTm_T: um, no, but grep ' \binstall$' would work13:44
ahoxTm_T: sry, grep -e ' \binstall$' would work13:44
Nyadit does, thanks13:44
ahoxNyad: I assume you still want to show the imaginary installed package names install....13:45
serhat..13:45
Nyadahox, imaginary names?13:46
Tm_Tahox: ah, true13:46

Nyadhi, if I have a free ext3 partition with nothing on it and I copy my whole kubuntu installation off of my one drive onto that one and I change grub's menu.lst to allow me to boot off of that kernel, will it work?14:00
