geirharddein: try ethtool -A autoneg off $device00:48
Jucatoquentin: Emerald is Compiz's window decoration. compiz  is a window manager like kwin. you can't use compiz *and* kwin at the same time. so "compiz+kwin" isn't possible00:48

_2now i'll look03:04
bdizzlewait, kubuntu is one partition (EXT3), swap on a second (SWAP), windows on a third (NTSF), and then I have another partition for media (NTSF)03:06
bdizzleif I could figure out which one has that nasty OEM recovery for Vista (that will never see the light of day on my computer), I'd love to remove that and gain back the 10 GB or so03:06
_2yep sda1 is the hiden thingy    sda2 is the M$ boot   sda3 is the extended (you never see it, you see the other 3 it houses) sda5 is the other windows disk sda6 swap and sda7 your installed kubuntu03:07
bdizzlecan we mount sda1 and wipe it and re-partion it so that I can use that space?03:07
bdizzleand then have kubuntu automatically mount sda2 and sda5 when it  boots?03:08
_2bdizzle you have everything valuable backed up ?03:08
_2it's never considered safe to play with the partition table03:08
bdizzleon the two partitions only03:08
bdizzleI don't have a data transfer cable to transfer it to another computer03:09
bdizzleif I know at least to leave the windows partition alone (sda2), I should be okay03:09
_2if you feel fine with proceeding then   i would sujest using   sudo cfdisk  and setting the type on sda1 to "83"  save and exit.   then;  sudo mke2fs -jc /dev/sda1    <<< note that will write an ext3 file system on that partition.    i do not guarentee that it wont afect anything else  "especially not M$"    but that should do what you asked for.03:11
bdizzleokay03:12
bdizzlewhat about automounting the windows and third partition upon boot?03:12
_2the rest is simply editing your fstab file     it's in /etc   and root owns it.03:12
_2pastebin your existing fstab and i'll add three lines. if you want.    (offer good for the next 5 seconds only)03:13
_2else you can edit it.  basicly following the example i already posted03:14
_2or ask someone else...   or...   the world is full of options03:14

bdizzleI think the thing that worried me was the UUID=03:16
_2blkid can display them.   but you can specify device names too03:19
bdizzleok03:19
_2the uuid is format specific   i.e.  reformating an fs will change the uuid03:19
bdizzleah03:19
bdizzlehmm, I tried blkid and it didn't do anything in terminal03:20
_2but it's not address specific.   i.e.  it can be moved around on the system bus/s and maintain the same uuid    the device listing is address   the uuid is fs name    "not lable,  lables can also be used"03:21
bdizzlehmm03:21
_2bdizzle copy paste into konsole      blkid03:22
* _2 thinks typo....03:22
bdizzleyeah, nothing03:23
_2really...      no error  nothing ?03:25
_2anyway here's an example fstab   http://ubuntu.pastebin.us/?show=d7382d32903:25
bdizzleokay, I tried ps - l in terminal, and it claims that only bash and ps was running, yet firefox wasn't listed when I was trying to get it to load. Told it to load firefox from the konsole and it claimed it was already running (it wasn't)03:25
_2should work.   note that does depend on the ntfs-3g driver03:26
bdizzlehow so?03:26
_2bdizzle "the fstab i pasted should work ^ "      the ps output...  cause you didn't ask it for the full process list03:26

_2bdizzle looks like this option may be needed in the ntfs lines i added.  and i didn't add it...    locale=en_US.utf803:53
bdizzleokay03:53
bdizzleadd it at the end?03:53
_2bdizzle other than that i don't see anything that should cause an issue.      auto,dmask=000,fmask=111 0 0  >>>  auto,dmask=000,fmask=111,locale=en_US.utf8 0 003:54
_2you can add defaults,  to that if you wish.  it shouldn't really change anything    (unless the ntfs-3g driver is more wierd than i think it is... which is possable.)03:55

bdizzleandare, its kinda wierd, but go to www.kde-look.com and hunt for one you like03:59
bdizzleget into the repo and download the KDM theme manager (I think)03:59
_2looking04:00
Dr_willisandare,  'themes' under kde work a little differently then windows. :) a 'theme' is made from various parts.. The package manager has a great # of theme parts. that are not isntalled by default.04:00

_2heh  nope.04:00

Dr_willisoften the theme 'parts' need to be compiled. this can take a little bit of effort. Deoending on the exact theme/part.04:00

bdizzlekonqueor loads almost immediately. Firefox stalls - a lot. Why is it doing it, I've never had firefox stall before04:16

ubottuTo make programs autostart with your KDE session, you can make a link to it in ~/.kde/Autostart. The package 'kcontrol-autostart' makes a kcontrol item for handling items in that directory. For a complete guide, see http://jucato.org/kde/kde-autostart.html04:23
_2a script in the autostart dir ?04:23

bdizzlehey, _2, question. That extra drive that we freed up, how hard would it be to convert it to ntsf format so that both windows and kubuntu can read it?04:37
bdizzleas right now, its not letting me write to it unless I'm root04:37
Dr_willisif its ext2/3 you should make a directroy on the filesystem owned by the user you want to use the space.04:39
Dr_williswindows can read/write ext2/3 (but i dont advise it) :)04:39
_2bdizzle <bdizzle> as right now, its not letting me write to it unless I'm root <<< like i said,  chown or chmod   you can man both for what they do.    as to the other Q  there is an error in it.   windows can access ext2/3 filesystems   there are drivers on the web for that04:39

_2nuxil without any better equipment to tset with.     oh wait one other thing comes to mind.   is it turned off in bios ?05:21
nuxilno· i tripple checked the bios05:22
_2i remember having an issue with that one time.   linux shouldn't care but some times it does.     set it to a different com port maybe05:22
anom01ynevermind I just had to log out then back in again05:22
anom01yworks like a charm05:22
nuxil_2, i only got 1 com port on my mobo05:23
_2anom01y stale lock file maybe ?05:23
_2nuxil but you can adjust it's settings in bios   "on good bios'ss anyway"05:23
nuxili can only change the irg|add in the bios. and i tried that, whitout luck05:24
_2they usually specify like set to com1 or com2    some say use e2f8  or e3f0  and so forth05:25
_2nuxil ok  now when you change the  irq and address you move it from ttyS0  to ttyS1  or ttyS2 ....05:26
_2that's what i'm talking about.05:26
_2so you changed it and test all your ttyS[0-7]   it won't be higher than 705:26
nuxilic.. havent tried that.. i have only been testing ttyS0 after a change in the bios05:27
_2right  :)       it's worth a shot05:27
_2probably wont be higher than 3  but could be extended options...  so 7 to be safe05:28
=== jacob_ is now known as Jabop
_2i remember one old, i think it was ibm bios... could have ben pheonix;  anyway it specified com1 com2 com3 com4    for options   not the base address05:31
_2i think it was an 8028605:32
_2windows was young   and i didn't know any better...05:33
nuxili dosent work.. so i guess my port is fried. which is what i suspect since i can measure a/c voltage on the pins.05:35
* _2 never stuck a multimeter to a com port. figured that a mouse was a better test device05:36
nuxil'but then again, if the port is sending data out. it would be seen as a/c voltage for the tool05:36

guidoon a different subject, if I update my kernel to 2.6.24-20 (currently 2.6.24-19) will virtualbox still work?07:25
* _2 is usually still talking after everyone has walked away... it goes with the age.07:25
_2guido try it and see.   subversion updates install along side,  so you can boot the older kernel if it doesn't work07:26
_2same version patches "security updates" overwrite   so that might be a place for caution   but not when the subversion changes07:26
guidoI read that after updating I should do "sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-XXX" to delete the previous kernel07:27
guidoI am thinking.. wouldn't that remove everything from the previous version?07:27
_2only after you have setteled that you want to keep the newer and remove the older   or vice versa.07:27
_2and yes it does remove the specified kernel completely07:28
_2one generally wouldn't want to use a wildcard there      sudo apt-get remove -P linux-image-*      would probably take half the packages with it  and would leave the system without a kernel in a default install.07:29
guidoif I do that command, it would still ask me to check if I'm sure, right?07:30
guidoI mean, before actually removing everything07:31
_2note that is not unrecoverable ^   as long as one has working network and the system isn't halted   you can still install a kernel and any needed packages.... but it's not the wisest of all moves that would have gotten you there....07:31
_2and yes it would ask   and probably require you to input   "Yes! do as i say"   before it would continue07:31
_2i have removed everything down to libc6 and still had things running and some of them usable.   but it's reload time from that point07:33

ubottugrub is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost grub after installing windows: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows - Making GRUB floppies & other GRUB howtos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto14:04
ubunturosleba: did you try anything?14:06

ubunturosleba: you could do, sudo cat /boot/grub/menu.lst | tail14:08
lebaubunturos : what you mean about the last few lines ?14:08
ubunturosleba: that's where, the entries for Windows should be14:09
lebaubunturus : did you check http://paste.ubuntu.com/30271/ ?14:09
ubunturosleba: GRUB may not be able to find t the right partition14:09
lebaI am trying to change from (hd0, 5) to (hd0, 6) for example on the grub prompt.14:10
ubunturosleba: hmm, ok, Check if that works14:10
lebaubunturos : it doesn't seens to be working though :(14:11
ubunturosleba: may be they (windows on E: and F: ) depended on the boot records of C:\ for them to boot14:11
ubunturosleba: hmm14:11
lebayeah, that's what I am suspected of..14:11
lebaMaybe windows saves the boot register on C: always14:11
lebaand If I format C again ?14:12
ubunturosleba: C:\ windows, would have had the boot.ini file, which lead to the menu14:12
lebayeah, probably..14:12
ubunturosleba: if you format C, keep just one Windows,14:12
lebaI can still find for this file in the other partitions..14:12
ubunturosleba: and install Kubuntu to an unallocated space14:12
ubunturosleba: i.e. either delete some partition (taking backup, ofcourse, of data)14:13
lebaubunturos : are you sure this is the correct file ?14:13
ubunturosleba: menu.lst, is the one that presents the menu in front of you14:13
lebaubunturos : I mean the boot.ini14:13
ubunturosrather, grub would read that file14:13
ubunturosleba: boot.ini would be used by Windows to give you a boot menu, for booting the triplet :P14:13
ubunturosleba: when grub took-over, it recognized windows on E: and F:, but surprisingly, it is not booting foryou14:14
lebaIf I find a boot.ini in one of the other partitions, maybe I can transfer grub to that of force it to read the boot.ini file somehow..14:14
ubunturosleba: that would be too much to do14:15
lebayeah...14:15
leba:(14:15
lebaBut if I lost the boot.ini file I lost windows ?14:16
ubunturosleba: I would suggest, having only one Windows installed14:16

lebaubunturus, yes, I was just testing different versions, but I found out xp is the only one I am interested of.14:16
ubunturosleba: oh14:17
ubunturosleba: C:\ is usually required for one windows, at-least14:17
lebayes..14:17
ubunturosleba: if you have multiple, you'll have the others depend on this one, since, the boot.ini of this would ideally be modified for the others to boot14:17
lebaubunturus : I read somewhere that I got to do something if I installed Linux on the fist partition (C:)14:18
ubunturosleba: ideally, you shouldn't have installed Linux on C:\; simply because, Windows loves C:14:18

see-gkhurram: Lesson 1: Linux is not Windows. Can't stress that enough (no, this does not mean that Linux is better than Windows. Neither does it mean Windows is better. Linux is not Windows. khurramthanks see-g22:31
khurramno suitable plugins when ever i play .dat file in amrok so from where i download plugins for amarok22:32
see-gLesson 2: Willingness to learn for yourself is greatly appreciated. It is perfectly fine to ask questions, but please do have a look at the documentation. Many projects set up a Wiki, others simply have a FAQ and documentation on their website, most software comes with a man page. After having a look in there, you often don't have to ask anymore :)22:33

ubottuTo see a list of your devices/partitions and their corresponding UUID's, run this command in a !shell: « sudo blkid » (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks for the rationale behind the transition to UUID)23:36
BooVeMan_workubottu: shut up23:37
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about shut up23:37
guidoBooVeMan_work: should I add that UUID thing?23:37
BooVeMan_workto make sure yes - and change the mount point - as /media/disk is fequently used for flash memories23:38
BooVeMan_workput it elsewhere - like /media/myotherdisk ;-)23:39
guidohow do I change that?23:39
guidojust write it on the fstab?23:39
BooVeMan_workguido: yes (that folder must exist) and should be read/writable by you23:40
guidoBooVeMan_work: so... my fstab should have something like this? "UUID="B6B0FDD0B0FD96D9" TYPE="ntfs" /dev/sda5 /media/downloads fuseblk rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,allow_other,blksize=4096 0 0"23:42

BooVeMan_worktyr first without the type - and shouldn't that be ntfs-3g23:43
BooVeMan_workguido: or is that read noly?23:43
guidoBooVeMan_work: it's not read only.. it's what I got from the "cat /etc/mtab" after dolphin mounted it23:45
