bassboican i install xubuntu from the internet via a terminal?03:52
coldhak i've just gotten a usb headset, and i'm trying to set it as my default sound device. Audacious and the xfce4-mixer detect it, and play/control it just fine, but asoundconf doesn't detect it. did i forget to do something? can't find any data on this via google.03:58
coldhakgoogle's rather sparse on xfce+usb stuff03:59
lunchhow to tell if you are allocating too much memory for video? i am using share memory. 768 mb ram04:01
gkoHi.04:12
bassboiHowdy partner04:12
coldhakhallo04:12
gkoHow big in memory is xubuntu, compared to (k)ubuntu ?04:13
gkoI have a 320 Mo / Pentium II 366 Mhz laptop.04:13
coldhaknot sure how big, but it's smaller :/04:14
gkoI'm trying Ubuntu running with ratpoison but, of course, there is some Ubuntu stuff running that eats the memory.04:14
coldhakyou might try running something a little lighter weight, like fluxbox04:15
gkoI have tried minimalist distributions, but, paradoxically, it looks like those won't contain stuff needed to run old hardware (without doing patching stuff)...04:17
coldhak...that's pretty odd04:18
coldhakdunno. i've never really messed with my older systems04:19
coldhakthey gather dust in the corner :/04:19
lunchhow to change splash screen to x buntu at boot time?04:20
coldhakhello there04:20
coldhakdamn, i know the answer to that one.04:24
bassboido you know how to install xubuntu from the internet frmo a terminal04:25
bassboimy cd is scratched up but no blanks04:26

bassboi4g boot, 2g swap, the rest as /home04:58
wols_then you obviously can't. you need a way to boot the machine first to some OS04:58
wols_well anything but DOS...04:59
bassboiwell04:59
bassboii can boot the live CD04:59
bassboijust the cd is corrupt04:59

j1mcbassboi: you have a 4gb boot partition.  did you mean root partition?05:17
bassboiit's mounted as /05:17
bassboiroot, yz05:17
j1mcbassboi: is the mythbuntu cd a live cd, or an alternate cd?05:17
bassboilive05:17
j1mcif it were the alternate cd, you could install a command line version of mythbuntu, and then just install xubuntu desktop.05:18

gbjkGood morning.09:50
gbjkI have a fairly stupid question, but I just want to be sure: I have Xubuntu GG installed. I want to upgrade to HH. Using the update manager appears to be a bad idea. It seems that doing so would upgrade to plain ubuntu, installing most of gnome. Is that correct?09:51
coldhakno, if you're running xubuntu, and you upgrade via the update manager, it upgrades to xubuntu's next version09:55
gbjkcoldhak: That's surprising.10:36
gbjkcoldhak: I downloaded the iso xubuntu image, and the packages that concerned me aren't listed.10:36
gbjkcoldhak: + the info page for 8.04 you get when you click "upgrade" shows ubuntu with no mention of xubuntu anywhere.10:40
gbjk/etc/apt/sources.list doesn't mention xubuntu except for the two cdrom options.10:41
coldhak...that's strange. i upgraded my desktop just a few weeks ago10:46
gbjkcoldnak: I must be wrong.10:51
gbjkSo in order to upgrade, I can just use the normal package manager?10:52
gbjkAnd it won't go installing all the unwanted gnome packages?10:53
gbjkThe xubuntu website upgrade from 7.10 page points you to downloading an ISO, which is why I ask.10:53
* gbjk tries upgrading a desktop running compiz fusion too first.10:56
Raz0Rcan anyone help me, i cant get a dhcp offer using wireless. ethernet works fine but no wireless?11:19
gbjkRaz0R: You can see the thing with iwlist scan?11:33
gbjkRaz0R: And you've connected to it with iwconfig?11:34
gbjkIf so dhcpcd and dhclient are the two subsequent commands.11:34
Raz0Rgbjk i see the ap with iwlist scan11:34
Raz0Rgbjk i have not heard of this ipconfig?11:35

Raz0Rthing is, ive tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID but it doesnt seem to be storing the value i set11:36
gbjkIIRC you're missing set from that11:36
gbjkNope, IRW. No set required.11:38
gbjkRaz0R: iwlist shows you a essid, but iwconfig won't show it after you set it?11:38
* gbjk suspects some silly gui applet of interferring.11:38
Raz0Rgbjk lol ok well i have removed network manager and have installed wicd11:39
Raz0Rbut i also have kwifimanager installed, and wifi radar11:39
gbjkBloody hell.11:39
Raz0Rlol, remove?11:40
Raz0Rshall i just leave wicd?11:41
gbjkGod knows. I have no familiarity with any of those.11:41
gbjkI know I've achieved wifi on many laptops by manual config where applets failed, and I don't bother with them anymore.11:42
gbjkException being... whatever I have running right now that shows my connection. It seems to be unobtrusive.11:42
Raz0Rdo you know what it is?11:45
Raz0Rok ive just removed all the gui applets and now i just have network manager installed11:46
gbjkOh FFS.12:15
gbjkEither xubuntu has stopped using xfce4, or xfce4 isn't using much xfce anymore.12:16
gbjkCos post upgrade, I have gnoe-panel, gnome -settings-daemon, etc all running12:16
gbjkAnd no xfce in sight.12:16
gbjkAh, that's right, this system actually had gnome installed, so it went to that because the default login session was lost12:18
si10cybinhello12:23
si10cybini was hoping someone could give me some basic advice ...12:24
si10cybini just installed xubuntu on a machine and seem to have come unstuck12:24
si10cybinthe root user seems to have been deleted12:24
si10cybini am new to linux12:24
gbjkI would be amazed if that had happened.12:25
si10cybinsynaptic says error "user root does not exist" and exits12:25
gbjkfinger root ?12:25
gbjkheh, that's ... very impressive.12:25
si10cybinfinger root says "no such user"12:25
gbjkI wonder if you can sudo without a superuser to do as.12:25
si10cybinsudo -i say "no passwd entry for root!"12:25
si10cybinapplications/system/users and groups is blank and won't let me add a user12:26

si10cybinone moment12:32
si10cybinthere are two files with the name passwd12:34
si10cybinthe first contains my username, I can give you the string if it helps12:35
si10cybinthe second is unable to be accessed via the file manager, 'permission denied'12:35

gbjkI'm going to have to leave you to it - Need to leave.12:35
si10cybinok thanks anyway12:36
gbjksi10cybin: I suspect you need to re-install to get the quickest fix for your current kill level.12:36
si10cybin!!!12:36
gbjksi10cybin: Instal only takes 20 mins, not so bad?12:36
gbjksi10cybin: Do you know what you did to delete it, btw? I've never seen anyone do that before by accident.12:36
si10cybini was trying to install a printer, and came across old instructions that involved creating a cups username and then accessing an administrative panel through the web browser12:37
si10cybinthere were no usernames in the user settings to begin with12:37
si10cybinall i did was delete the group that I created when i realised there is a print manager12:38
si10cybinit shouldn't be that easy for a newbie to kill an install12:38
gbjkIt really shouldn't, no.12:41

Raz0Rhow do i set a command to run at boottime19:26
sirjoebobhey all... i am running xubuntu 8.04 and i use a highly customized gui environment. HOWEVER, when i run programs meant for KDE, they dont follow all the same visual style rules. is there a way to change this?19:31
vinnlsirjoebob, you could set a Qt-theme similar to your GTK-theme, and I believe there also was an effort for a Qt theme engine that copies your GTK theme, but that's probably not stable yet19:32
vinnlsirjoebob, you can also do it the other way around: install gtk-qt-engine and have all your GTK applications pick up the Qt theme19:33
sirjoebobstable is not for me anyways... bleeding-edge ftw. :) i will try that19:33
sirjoebobthanks for the tip19:34

Raz0Rvinnl i removed all networking gui software like nm, wicd, etc22:05

Raz0Rvinnl actually, yes it was most antagonizing22:10
Raz0Rthere is one more thing i need help with22:11
neozen-workI've found the do it yourself option works quite well, provided documentation is both adequate and open for change22:11
Raz0Ri need to get wpa_supplicant to start at boot time, along with wifi radar22:12
Raz0Rwifi radar is done sorry, just need to run this at startup sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf - can anyone tell me how?22:12

Raz0Rwhen i login will do as im the only user22:13
Raz0Ryeah im not gonna need remote login or anything22:14

si10cybinanyone able to help with a missing /etc/group?22:34
TheSheepsi10cybin: might be difficult22:40
TheSheepsi10cybin: some of the GIDs are generated, and thenumbers depend on the order in which you install things22:41
TheSheepsi10cybin: but here's mine if that helps you: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/81076/22:41
si10cybinthanks22:42
si10cybinit's a new install, i have only installed ndiswrapper on top of the default22:42
si10cybini was thinking of copying the default off of the install cd22:42
si10cybini am in the recovery console of the install cd, (recovery console in grub doesn't work)22:43
si10cybini am new to linux22:43
si10cybincould you please guide me how to find the file on the cd and copy it?22:43

si10cybinit's missing22:44
si10cybinoh you mean on the cd22:44
si10cybinforgive the noob22:44
TheSheepwhen you are running the livecd, / is different than your hdd22:44
si10cybinit's the alternative install cd22:44
TheSheepyou will have to mount your partition22:45
si10cybinit mounted the partition22:45
TheSheepyour system partition, I think there is an option for that on the alt cd22:45
TheSheepok, now switch to second console with alt+ctrl+f222:45
si10cybinok22:45
si10cybindone22:46
TheSheepyou should see the livecd's /etc/group there, when you do: ls /etc/group22:46
si10cybinwhen i type that it responds with one line saying '/etc/group'22:46
TheSheepyes, that's correct22:46
si10cybincool22:46
TheSheeptype 'mount' to see where your system partition is mounted22:47
si10cybinis it the one that is type ext2?22:48
TheSheepyes, it's probably something like /target22:48
TheSheepor /media/something22:48

TheSheepgreat22:48
TheSheepnow, type: ls /target/etc/group22:49

si10cybinit says /target/etc/group22:49
slow-motiondo i get 8.04.1 automatic when i make the normal updates?22:49
TheSheepamirman: less programs, the programs have less automation, some things have to be configured in terminal, not with gui22:49
crimsunslow-motion: hardy-updates and hardy-security, yes.22:50
amirmanTheSheep: this user will only be using the internet and play some simple games, how much configuring would i have to do before i can give them the laptop?22:50
TheSheepamirman: how is the internet connected?22:51
slow-motionthx crimsun22:51
TheSheepsi10cybin: this means the file exists22:51
si10cybinok22:51
TheSheepsi10cybin: cat /target/etc/group will show its contents22:51
amirmanTheSheep: well they dont have a router set up as of now, but i'm guessing they will get one and use it wirelessly22:51
si10cybinit only has three lines in it22:52
si10cybinshadow:x:4222:52
TheSheepamirman: then it all depends on whether the wireless card in the laptop is supported natively22:52

TheSheepsi10cybin: ok, ok22:52
si10cybinnathan:x:1000:22:52

amirmanTheSheep: not sure, it's a dell d505, i'm not sure what wireless device is in it though22:53
TheSheepsi10cybin: you will also have to edit it and change the name of the group 1000 to 'nathan', it will be probably 'ubuntu' or something like that22:53
si10cybinok22:53
amirmanTheSheep: wait i see now, it's broadcom B4322:53
si10cybinwhat command to edit it?22:53
TheSheepsi10cybin: nano /target/etc/group22:54
TheSheepsi10cybin: then ctrl+x to save and exit22:54
