dwf_starbandjust finishing setting up 8.04alpha again after replacing the drive with a bigger one, got everything working except the channel change script, i dont remember where it is07:42
dwf_starbandim pretty sure it creates one for me, because i selected my remote and dish receiver during setup, but how do i tell it to use it?07:43
dwf_starbandnoone?08:10
bartmonI'm trying to test a live backend/frontend combined mythbuntu. i can't seem to get the frontend to connect with the database09:18
bartmonI've run sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database09:19
bartmonbut the frontend still says it can't ping localhost (?!)09:19
kambeiI have asked in #mythtv-users, but since this is sort of Ubuntu specific, I thought I would ask here, too.15:05
kambeiI'm having a little Myth trouble.  I changed from a Gentoo-based system to Ubuntu.  It seems like the machine now has a hard time playing back video.  When it is commercial flagging, HD video stutters greatly, and is unwatchable.  I have tried a bunch of different approaches to solving this issue, to no avail.  Any ideas?15:06
dwf_starbandjjust finishing setting up 8.04alpha again after replacing the drive with a bigger one, got everything working except the channel change script, i dont remember where it is15:08
dwf_starbandim pretty sure it creates one for me, because i selected my remote and dish receiver during setup, but how do i tell it to use it?15:08
lagadwf_starband: 8.04 alpha?`15:09
lagakambei: is your kernel fully upgraded?15:09
kambeiYes15:10
dwf_starbandyeah, i did all the updates15:10
kambeiThe machine is fully up to date15:10
dwf_starbandi tried using the newer installation but couldnt get it past the startup screen15:10
dwf_starbandso is there a channel change script somewhere in the installation, or do i need to find it and download it like in the past?15:13
kambeilaga: You there?15:15
lagadon't worry, that happens sometimes15:15
kambeiWhat the hell is wrong with those people?15:15
dwf_starband?15:16
kambeilaga: Do they do that a lot?15:16
kambeidwf_starband: Referring to another channel, sorry.15:18
dwf_starbandoh ok, i was confused, lol15:19
kambeiSo am I.15:19
Shadow__Xhello everybody15:20
kambeiAllo.15:20
Shadow__Xhey who was i talking to yesterday about wireless n15:20
Shadow__Xbroadcom wireless n15:20
kambeiDefinitely not me.15:21
* superm1 hides?15:22
Shadow__Xahhh yeah you NO HIDING15:22
NTolerancei still wonder why broadcom and linux were ever talked about...it's forbidden15:22
Shadow__XNTolerance, because at this moment i dont have a itnel wireless n card in my laptop15:22
NTolerancesry =\15:23
Shadow__Xdell got abit smart *after* i got mine15:23
dwf_starbandis this still the way to set it up? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MythTV_External_Channel_Changer15:23
Shadow__Xdwf_starband, does your cable box have firewire15:24
superm1NTolerance, because there is a new(ish) driver that they've put together which works better than the other methods atm15:25
dwf_starbandits not cable, its dish network15:25
Shadow__Xwhy hello superm1 i am going to install it now15:25
Shadow__Xoh ok dwf_starband15:25
Shadow__Xlooking at my normal laptop this laptop is so small current laptop on 12inched my real laptop is 17 widescreen15:26
NTolerancesuperm1: that's good news, is it in the kernel?15:28
superm1NTolerance, well the first iteration of it is more of a monolithic driver, but they are working with the main kernel wireless guys to have a more openish driver upcoming15:29
superm1there are two problems as i understand it15:29
superm11-> their driver supports more than the stack in the kernel right now15:29
superm12-> locking down the regulatory stuff in an openish manner.  the thing is that the intel cards have their own extra processor on the board that handles that stuff. that's what is used when the firmware gets loaded15:30
superm1this stuff happens on the host CPU for broadcom15:30
NTolerancei'm way too smug w/ my intel wireless card :(15:31
Shadow__Xhmm DAMN BROADCOMM15:31
superm1well this is the exact reason that the intel cards tend to cost 20-40 dollars more15:32
superm1that extra processor and logic to drive it15:33
Shadow__Xthat would of been fine with me except i didnt have an option when i bought it15:33
dwf_starbandok in answer to my own question, the instructions on that page were what i wanted, its working fine now15:48
dwf_starbandthanks15:48
Shadow__Xyour welcome15:49
Shadow__X:)15:49
NToleranceany of you guys use ampache?15:57
superm1one of my friends swears by it16:07
NToleranceit's really amazing16:10
NTolerancei'm streaming from it now over SSH16:10
NToleranceno longer do i have to carry my mp3 player into work16:11
NTolerancethe mpd support is great too16:12
NTolerancenow i don't have to vnc to my myth box to play music over my TV speakers16:12
superm1personally i stopped bringing my ipod to work for a long time too, but since i got last.fm and pandora on it16:12
NTolerancei can't do the internet radio thing for too long, i'm a control freak16:13
NTolerancei frequently get urges to listen to meshuggah or neurosis, and i GOTTA HAVE IT NOW DAMNIT16:13
lagasame here ;)16:14
lagaalthough internet radio is nice sometimes16:14
thatdoodis it normal for mythfilldatabase to take over an hour to run (getting data from 2 networks from Shedules Direct) ?17:31
NTolerancethat's not normal in my experience, usually only takes a few minutes for me17:31
NToleranceand i use schedules direct17:31
thatdoodhmmmm17:32
tgm4883_laptopi would suppose it depends on your internet connection17:32
Shadow__Xthatdood,  just leave it17:32
Shadow__Xthe first few times it took along time for me17:33
thatdoodits cable modem, downloading the data isnt the problem, its processing it once its down.  and Im running it on an AMD 64 X2 4000+ system with 4GB ram17:33
thatdoodit done now17:33
Shadow__Xits fine17:33
Shadow__Xit takes what it takes17:34
NToleranceyou tried running top while the filldatabase is happening?17:34
Shadow__Xaslong as it works17:34
NTolerancewhen my HDD was dying in my old mythbox it would take forever just to dump the database or load up mythweb17:34
thatdoodits a new drive (not that that means squat these days)17:34
thatdoodrunning top?17:34
NToleranceyeah, type top in the command line to see what process is slowing things down, or if that's happening at all17:35
NTolerancebetter yet, apt-get install htop17:35
NTolerancehtop is even better17:35
thatdoodk, sec17:35
thatdoodwould i need to start the mythfilldatabase again?17:36
NToleranceyeah, if you wanted to test it out17:36
NTolerancegotta reproduce the problem if you want to fix it17:37
thatdoodand, should mfd be run daily?17:37
NTolerancei think it runs automatically at an interval17:37
NToleranceand yeah, it's once a day i think17:37
thatdoodit has been about 5 days since i ran it manually i think17:37
NTolerancei don't know the default schedule offhand though17:37
thatdoodshould the backend be shutdown as well?17:38
NToleranceIIRC the backend needs to be running to do a mythfilldatabase17:38
NTolerancei could be wrong17:38
thatdoodk, i didnt shut it down, it was running17:39
NTolerancethe backend is basically the SQL server17:39
NToleranceand if you take it offline i imagine the filldatabase would fail17:39
thatdoodthere's quite a few mysql processes running17:40
NTolerancethat's normal17:40
thatdoodmthy taking 78% and 2 of the mysql's taking up 20% each.  this appears to be all on 1 of the cores, which is at 100% and second core at 18%17:42
thatdoodi mean mfd taking 78%17:42
NToleranceif it does that for like an hour that's a problem i think17:43
NToleranceno way should it consume all that CPU time for so long17:43
NTolerancehow to fix it...i dunno though17:43
thatdoododd that the download speed is averaging 104.9K/s normally get 700-900K/s when downloading files17:45
NToleranceIIRC i don't max my connection when downloading from schedulesdirect17:45
NToleranceseems like the filldatabase spends more time importing the data than downloading17:46
NTolerancebut it's been a while since i ran it manually17:46
thatdoodinteresting tho, that its downloading several times, when I only have 2 lineups setup on the service17:46
Shadow__Xyou are recording information for each channel17:47
thatdoodso each download i see is for an individual channel?17:48
Shadow__Xsure17:48
Shadow__Xlets say that17:48
Shadow__Xi am not fully sure17:48
NToleranceyeah, the filldatabase does many different download segments17:48
NToleranceit's not just one big download17:48
NToleranceit's a lot of small downloads17:48
Shadow__Xso than thatdood if you have more than 5 channels17:49
Shadow__Xjust let it have fun17:49
thatdoodis there an sql statement i could type in that will give me a channel count?17:49
Shadow__Xyou know how many channels you have17:50
thatdoodi basically selected all of them on 2 sat networks, so theres probably a ton of channels and that could be why its taking so long17:50
Shadow__Xyou scanned for them or you selected them on a lineup17:50
Shadow__Xyeah if i select comcast digital setup17:50
Shadow__Xits around 700 channels17:50
Shadow__Xyou are probably at over 100017:50
Shadow__Xenjoy that17:51
thatdoodso, around 1m12s per dl17:51
thatdoodany risk of aborting the current fill, since i just did one a few minutes ago?17:52
NTolerancethatdood: i scan around 100 channels on my system, that's all17:53
thatdoodthats probably why its taking so long then17:53
NToleranceShadow__X: how do you tune comcast digital channels?17:53
thatdoodi figured it just downloaded 1 packet for the line up, not a packet for each channel. hehe17:53
Shadow__Xqam tuners and a stb17:55
Shadow__Xthe stb has alot of channels17:56
NTolerancedo you get the encrypted channels?17:56
Shadow__Xdoes that makes sense to you17:57
Shadow__X:p17:57
thatdoodheh17:57
Shadow__Xas in do i get more channels than i do over qam yes17:57
Shadow__Xas in do i get every channel off of the stb no17:58
Shadow__Xi use firewire over the stb17:58
NToleranceinteresting, time warner locks down all the ports on our boxes17:58
thatdoodon a side note, been struggling with setting up a mini itx (Commell LV-673) as a frontend.  Svideo on that thing is driving me nuts.  If i edit another xorg.conf file one time imma scream haha17:58
NTolerancehow many chans do you get on the QAM?17:58
Shadow__Xfcc mandates firewire to work17:58
NTolerancehmm17:59
NTolerancei need to subscribe to your newsletter17:59
Shadow__Xyeah17:59
thatdoodwelp, i'll be back later, gotta go get plates for the car17:59
Shadow__Xif there is a firewire port it should work at atleast nbc cbs fox17:59
thatdoodthanks for the input guys17:59
Shadow__Xmhm17:59
NTolerancenp18:00
Shadow__XNTolerance, you should go smack them until the firewire is on18:00
NTolerancedo you use an IR blaster?18:00
Shadow__Xover firewire?18:00
NTolerancefor the STB18:00
Shadow__Xno it just works18:00
NTolerancenice18:00
Shadow__Xfirewire changes the channel and records off of there18:00
NTolerancewow18:00
Shadow__Xmotorola dct320018:00
Shadow__Xalso does hd18:00
Shadow__X:D18:00
NTolerancehow many chans do you get on the QAM tuner?18:01
NToleranceand which one do you use?18:01
Shadow__Xi get around 50 channels18:03
Shadow__Xi think18:03
Shadow__Xmaybe 4018:03
Shadow__Xi have a hvr-1800 and a pinnacle 800i i am contemplating getting a hvr-1600 as wel18:03
NTolerancehmm18:03
NToleranceHVR series don't have kernel driver support do they?18:04
NTolerancei was reading threads about a scary compilation process..18:04
Shadow__Xthey have support as in they work18:04
Shadow__Xits just you have to be running mythtv from svn18:04
Shadow__Xand be upto date18:04
NTolerancescary18:04
Shadow__Xi guess18:04
Shadow__Xyou install the driver18:04
NTolerancei can't be bleeding edge on the mythbox, my girlfriend expect it to work when she turns it on18:05
NToleranceexpects18:05
Shadow__Xso build another one18:05
Shadow__Xand test it on there18:05
Shadow__X:D18:05
NTolerancelolz18:05
NTolerancei just spent a buttload on the current one18:05
Shadow__Xyou dont have spare computers18:06
Shadow__Xdo you even call yourself a geek?18:06
NToleranceyeah, but not enough spare time18:06
Shadow__Xhmm i dont know18:06
Shadow__Xwell you can pay me to configure it then18:06
Shadow__X:D18:06
NTolerancei want a PCI-E HD tuner18:06
NTolerancewith kernel support, think it'll happen in time for intrepid?18:06
Shadow__Xmaybe18:06
NTolerancei could always go for the HD homerun18:07
Shadow__Xmy hvr-1800 is pci -e18:07
Shadow__Xhvr-1800 works with digital oob18:07
Shadow__Xwith a current kernel18:07
Shadow__X2.16.2418:07
Shadow__Xkinda current18:07
Shadow__Xanalog works if you isntall the drivers and firmware butnot in myth yet18:08
Shadow__Xi have gotten analog to work in linux just not 100 percent in myth18:08
Shadow__Xi am looking into getting the hvr-1600 for another qam tuner and analog18:10
Shadow__Xor maybe use video in from a stb18:10
Shadow__Xhavnt decided18:10
NToleranceok so HVR1800, PCI-E, can tune QAM out of the box on the current Hardy kernel and also the current release of mythbuntu?18:14
Shadow__Xyup18:14
Shadow__Xand that works fine18:14
NTolerancesounds nice18:14
Shadow__Xyeah18:14
NTolerancei can just use my MCE150 for analog18:14
NToleranceso i can take that thing, plug it in, add the tuner in mythtv setup, done?18:15
Shadow__Xmhm18:15
Shadow__Xpretty much18:15
NTolerancenice18:15
Shadow__Xyou also have to scan for qam18:15
NToleranceanother other tuners that are better?18:15
NTolerancehauppauge has several HVR models18:15
Shadow__Xwell for me the pctv 800i tunes to ondem better18:16
Shadow__Xbut thats just me18:16
Shadow__Xi am pretty sure once i installed the driver thats why it changed18:16
Shadow__Xother than that i love the 180018:16
Shadow__Xi got the one with the pce remote18:16
NTolerancei see 4 hauppauge HVR models18:16
Shadow__Xi have the hvr 180018:16
NTolerancehttp://hauppauge.com/site/products/prods_hvr_internal.html18:16
Shadow__Xone day analog will work18:17
Shadow__Xhttp://hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr1800.html18:17
NToleranceso the HVR1800 can record two QAM chans at once?18:17
Shadow__Xi can record 4 channels at once18:17
Shadow__Xbut18:17
Shadow__Xit needs to be on the same multiplex18:17
Shadow__Xsuch as 100.11 100.0218:17
Shadow__Xlike that18:17
NTolerancewhat about 2 chans? does that always work?18:18
Shadow__Xwhat do you mean18:18
Shadow__X2 channels on the same multiplex?18:18
NTolerancei don't even know what multiplexing is18:18
NTolerance=\18:18
Shadow__Xok18:18
Shadow__Xwith qam channels numbers arent like analog18:19
Shadow__Xwith analog channel 5 is channel 518:19
Shadow__Xon qam channel 5 can be 104.0618:19
Shadow__Xso the best way you to to understand would be to buy the qam tuner18:19
Shadow__Xscan for channels18:19
Shadow__Xthen go through every channel and identify what they are18:20
Shadow__Xright down channel number and channel naem such as fx or fox18:20
NToleranceso it's a crapshoot basically?18:20
Shadow__Xthen as you go through more numbers you see channels are on the same number18:21
Shadow__Xeh its not bad18:21
Shadow__Xonce your done your done though18:21
Shadow__Xit will prob take about an hour or 218:21
Shadow__Xbut the process is fun18:21
Shadow__Xyou dont know what channels you are going to get18:21
Shadow__Xor wind up on18:21
Shadow__XNTolerance,  when linux gets support i am buying atleast one of these18:23
Shadow__Xhttp://hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr2250.html18:23
Shadow__Xdual analog encoders dual qam tuners18:23
Shadow__XNTolerance,  you still alive?18:30
sabhainShadow_X .. who's your cable provider?18:43
Shadow__Xcomcast18:46
Shadow__Xwhy18:46
Shadow__Xhow about you sabhain18:49
sabhainI have TimeWarner .. and it's been a struggle to get a firewire enabled STB18:59
sabhainthat part of it is phase 2 of my whole house Mythbuntu install .. and it's coming soon.19:00
Shadow__Xhmm isnt it fcc mandated19:00
sabhainit sure is fcc mandated .. but it doesn't mean that all STB's have to be 1394 enabled .. merely that they're supposed to supply one upon request.19:01
Shadow__Xhmm so you have a stb with firewire but it isnt enabled19:01
sabhainright ..19:01
Shadow__Xi thought it was also fcc mandated that if you have a firewire port it needs to be neabled19:01
Shadow__Xlol19:01
superm1that doesn't mean that they have to provide lots of channels on it19:02
sabhainmy read on the fcc regs (an amateur read) is that they HAVE to be there .. and they HAVE to be enabled "upon request"19:02
Shadow__Xright19:02
Shadow__Xyeah19:02
superm1eg unencrypted19:02
Shadow__Xthat doesnt mean you will get alot of channels19:02
Shadow__Xdo you get atleast 3 channels?19:02
superm1i can get my local digital channels and bbc america on mine19:02
superm1that's it19:03
Shadow__Xah well thats better than nothing19:03
Shadow__Xdo you get bbc america over qam>?19:03
superm1nope :(19:03
superm1the locals i do though19:03
Shadow__Xah19:03
Shadow__Xhmm19:03
superm1i decided it's not worth doing firewire just for BBCA in which case19:03
superm1so i just do svid instead19:03
Shadow__Xi dont get bbc america over qam19:03
sabhainsuperml .. agreed .. but the local guys using Tivo in these parts are getting way more .. pretty much anything that is not labled copy once in the CCI bytes is available over 1394 .. if you can get a box19:04
Shadow__Xright19:04
Shadow__Xhmm sabhain so then you should too19:04
superm1tivo can capture 1394 ?19:04
Shadow__Xi thought so19:05
Shadow__Xbut i also read it can record more than a pc can over firewire19:05
Shadow__Xbecause of device type19:05
sabhainas I understand it .. and this is convoluted .. guys around here have been able to identify that the channels that tivo is able to copy off to PC, are the same channels that are available to the one guy I know who's got a 1394 enabled STB19:05
Shadow__Xalthough i dont know how true that really is19:05
Shadow__Xah19:05
Shadow__Xso get one sabhain19:05
sabhainahhhh .. if it were that easy, I'd have 3 already.19:06
superm1hum this doesn't seem right.  i don't recall "ever" reading that tivo has firewire19:06
sabhainsuperml .. not what I'm saying .. I'm just saying that the local users of Tivo along with a guy using his own PVR (mythdora I think) lead me to believe that most of my digital cable (no premiums) will be available via 1394 once I can get an enabled STB19:07
Shadow__Xthe only way youll know is by doing for sure19:08
Shadow__Xso go do it19:08
superm1oh19:09
zabbadappif I want to get a new dvb-channel by scanning, will the existing channels be wiped and rescanned (and change their id:s) and cause trouble? is it better to insert the data directly into the database?19:15
Shadow__Xin the channel scanner you can select minor change19:28
Shadow__Xand it would just add the new channels19:28
Shadow__Xno harm done19:28
Shadow__Xif you are scared19:28
Shadow__Xbackup the database19:28
NToleranceShadow__X: do the HVR1250 and HVR1800 also work OOB in Hardy?20:21
NToleranceHVR1250 is only $52 at newegg20:21
gregLlaga: I asked a few weeks ago about weekly builds from trunk..You indicated it would be coming when it was more stable....Any idea when we can expect them to restart?20:30
gregLThanks20:31
lagagregL: once i fixed that weird build error :)20:32
lagai renamed the libmyth-0.21 to libmyth-0.22 and now dpkg-shlibdeps complains :( i'll investigate that tomorrow then20:32
lagathanks for the reminder20:32
gregLcool.. I would do it myself but it seems i have more problems when i compile..It works but no problem free...20:33
gregLs/not20:34
superm1Shadow__X, i detailed everything i mentioned yesterday in this post whenever you are finished installing: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=88021820:50
MaxflaxAnyone know how to get a twinhan 2033 DVB-t card to work?22:04
MaxflaxAnyone know how to get a twinhan 3030 DVB-t card to work?22:22
orangepeelbeefi can't get ogg audio files in .mkv to play in mythvideo.  the video plays fine, but no audio at all22:32
Shadow__XNTolerance, the 1250 is a framegrabber bad for analog22:32
Shadow__Xgood for digital22:32
DogBoydoes it play with mplayer orangepeelbeef22:32
orangepeelbeefanyone able to help?  I thought all I'd need were the libvorbis packages installed22:32
Shadow__Xand maybe if it doesnt yo would just have to install driver22:32
orangepeelbeefdogboy:  video plays, no sound in mplayer22:33
Shadow__Xsuperm1, thanks22:33
DogBoyso mythvideo has nothing to do with it22:33
DogBoycan you play ogg files22:33
orangepeelbeefwell no, but i thought you all might know how to fix ;)22:33
orangepeelbeefnot sure i will have to find one to try22:34
DogBoyand you thought that by misrepresenting the problem you would be more likely to get help22:34
DogBoyheh22:34
orangepeelbeefno i was still typing ;P22:34
orangepeelbeefis there something else i should need other than the libvorbis audio?   the vorbis video is working fine22:35
orangepeelbeefhm, well i guess the video shows as advanced video codec22:36

chuck-i am looking for opinions on moving from windows media center 2005 to unbuntu with mythtv..my HD .mkv files playback fine now but im looking for a free solution, hence ubuntu and mythtv. what are your opinions?22:59
Shadow__Xchuck-, if you are going to switch be prepared for a good amount of work22:59
chuck-Shadow__X: how so?22:59
Shadow__Xwell if you are expecting point and click such as windows thats not going to work23:00
Shadow__Xsometimes you might have to trouble shoot and then maybe it will work23:00
chuck-i understand that23:00
chuck-i just didin't know if there was an overall working solution to playback .mkv, .avi files23:00
Shadow__Xif you have no problem working on it a decent amount of time and fixing it if something breaks23:00
Shadow__Xwell i dont know about .mkv files but .avi files should play fine23:01
chuck-i read something about linux not being able to take advantage of a GPU with graphics or something where as windows does which allows for smoother playback23:01
chuck-im gonna read up a little on it..just figured id get some first thoughts before plowing through it23:02
chuck-would be cool if oyu could cap HD shows :)23:04
tgm4883_laptopchuck-, system specs?23:06
