smartyquestion for anyone here... whats the benefit of changing your MAC address?00:58
smartyanyone?00:58
smartyno one has any idea?01:03
afeijosmarty: you cant change your MAC address, it is the fisical number of your network board01:05
afeijoonly changing your board01:06
smartyisnt the MAC address displayed under HWaddr (in ifconfig > eth0 ) ?01:07
[pyro]afeijo: yes you can change your mac address01:07
roldyxhello i am using kopete and I cant see webcam01:08
roldyxI am using kubuntu 801:08
smartypyro : so then whats the benefit of changing MAC's?01:08
[pyro]afeijo / smarty: check out a program called macchanger: http://www.alobbs.com/macchanger/01:08
ubuntu_мой первый запуск kubuntu )) исторический момент )01:09
smarty pyro: i was able to do it through console, but i dont understand whats the point of it01:09
[pyro]smarty: some times you need to do it because your ISP has locked ur pppoe connection down to a particuar mac address01:09
roldyxhelp me please01:09
[pyro]smarty: and its linux, we can do anything :)01:09
smarty:D01:09
smartyCan you get traced back (assming you do something illegal) to a new IP (that that I am going to)01:09
smarty*MAC01:10
smartynot IP01:10
[pyro]smarty: very usefull if you need to "copy" a mac address of a wireless client to connect to an AP which has an allow only MAC list..01:10
smartyAh, I see01:10
[pyro]etc etc01:10
[pyro]there are many uses for it01:10
smartyIs there any way to figure the MAC of the client that is being allowed through without gaining physical access?01:10
[pyro]yes, use a network sniffer and capture packets01:11
[pyro]you can see communication between said client and host01:11
[pyro]copy mac of said client01:11
smartySomething like aircrack or nmap?01:12
[pyro]you want to use wireshark to sniff a network01:12
smartyIm assuming its a CLI>01:12
[pyro]no01:13
[pyro]it can be, but it has an interface01:13
[pyro]nice gui with buttons :)01:13
[pyro]sudo apt-get install wireshark01:13
smartyOh, awesome... So should I install via terminal or a file?01:13
smartyAh, beat me to it :D01:13
[pyro]smarty: you also need to understand that if you are connected to a switch you will only see traffic that is destined for you.01:14
smartyMeaning?01:14
[pyro]a network sniffer will only show you your data and no-one else's01:14
smartyHow exactly would you be able to sniff the Client's packets then?01:14
[pyro]you need to connect your machine to a hub, or use the monitor port of the switch, or hack the switch and turn it into a hub.01:15
nuxil[pyro], thats so wrong01:15
[pyro]nuxil: how so?01:16
nuxil[pyro], spoof a mac.. and you can sniff all you want.. there are even apps thats opens exact same pages of the one you sniff01:16
smartynuxil : pages that view the packets that are incoming?01:17
nuxilyup01:17
[pyro]smarty: yeah, you can capture cookies and view said pages01:17
smartyWow. What apps?01:17
[pyro]smarty: you best look at a distro called backtrack01:17
nuxilsmarty01:17
nuxilhope your not doing any illegal stuff01:18
* [pyro] agrees with nuxil01:18
smarty nuxil/pyro : no worries.. im not :)01:18
[pyro]nuxil: correct me if im wrong but it depends on the switch as to how much data you can see. sure you can get around most of them by changing mac, but not all of them01:19
di48lohow can I fix my tooltips, they seem to have same colour for text and background?01:22
nuxil[pyro], if you put your card in promisc. then you can dump all packs traveling in the networks.. offcource if the packets are cryped you will dump them as crypted packs,01:22

nuxilyou must spesify a nic to use01:26

di48lobest dreamweaver for ubuntu is??01:27
smartydo you need to have a physical network card installed? (not a internal one) if that made any sense01:29
alexishola a todos!!!!01:34
[pyro]nuxil: no if you set ur card in promisc mode when connected to a swtich, your still only going to get data destined for your ip. test if out yourself.01:42
nuxilnop. not if you use the proper tools while your in promisc mode01:43

tim_how can i install kde 4 for testing but return to 3 anytime without destroying anything?13:01
XmasGhostskii: the kmenu is like the start menu for kde13:01
XmasGhostskii: it's the blue K that's on the task bar13:01
Alex135Tim_: dont try it, i did it once and i had to reinstall everything because it messed up fonts in my gnome and KDE3 when i went back13:01
skii yes i got that part13:01
XmasGhostskii: if you click there you should have a list of menus13:01
Alex135tim_: dont do it13:01
XmasGhostskii: go to the one that says "system"13:01
tim_Alex135: ok^^13:02
XmasGhostskii: there click on the link that sayz "kinfocenter"13:02
skiii found it13:02
Alex135tim_: i would recomend instead makeing a VM and installing kubuntu kde4.1 on it13:02
XmasGhostok.. now you should be able to tell what's its ram and processor13:02
dschulzhi all.. does anyone knows when Qt 4.4.1 packages will be available in hardy backports?13:02
skiiok KDE version : 3.5.813:02
tim_ok i'll try that tzhx13:02
=== aarre is now known as h
XmasGhostskii: if you click on the "memory" link it should tell you how much ram you have (I believe it says "physical memory" or something similar)13:04
=== h is now known as Guest17735
skiii put ram in the search and nothing13:04
skiii can't there's nothing there13:04
XmasGhostskii: then click on "processor" and look for "model name", that's where it will say what machine you have13:05
XmasGhostskii: delete what you typed in the search field13:05
skiii68613:05
XmasGhostskii: to the left a list containing things like "dma channels, devices, etc" should appear13:06
XmasGhostskii: are you following me?13:06
skiiyes but there's a BIG problem, to the left there is NOTHING there but white then a devider then it say's kde info center and say's the kde version, user, hostname, system, release, & machine13:07
skiithat's all that i do see in KinfoCenter13:07
XmasGhostskii: ok13:07
XmasGhostskii: click where it says "memory"13:08
AccidusIn the taskbar: is it possible to change the order in which the windows appear?13:08
skiii did & still nothing13:10
skiithis is really start'n to piss me off in which i don't want to have happen rite now13:10
XmasGhostAccidus: I believe what you are looking for can be found under the desktop section of the kcontrol utility. Press alt-F2 and type "kcontrol"13:11
XmasGhostAccidus: there you should find a Desktop section and you can adjust the Task Bar settings13:11
AccidusThanks, I'll look into it.13:11
AccidusOkay. I know this menu13:12
AccidusI want to be able to drag the windows in the taskbar and reorder them dynamically. Is that possible?13:12
XmasGhostskii: when you say "nothing" what do you mean? did it not open a new section?13:13
XmasGhostAccidus: what do you mean when you say "dynamically"?13:13
AccidusFor example, at the moment I'm working with Kate and KDvi13:13
AccidusAnd I want them to be adjacent on the taskbar13:13
skiiwhen i say nothing i mean that nothing happend, nothing came up13:14
AccidusBut I can't drag and drop them together on the taskbar13:14
AccidusAnd if I sort the taskbar alphabetically, they won't be next to each other either13:14
XmasGhostAccidus: I see.. I'm not sure how that could be done, perhaps another one of these fine people will :)13:15
XmasGhostAccidus: Sorry for not being of further help13:16
AccidusThanks, and don't sweat it.13:16
AccidusIt's nitpicking the desktop, so I won't be surprised if it's not even possible.13:17
XmasGhostskii: let's try this.. close that window13:17
XmasGhostskii: now press the keys ALT and F2 of your keyboard at the same time13:17
AccidusAnother related question: Is it possible to group several related windows under one window? For example, I'm always using Kate with Kdvi, so it would be great if I could "glue" them together, and minimize/maximize them together.13:17
XmasGhostskii: it will prompt you for a command13:17
=== joe_ is now known as skii

XmasGhostAccidus: I'm thinking that that could be accomplished using compiz window rules13:19
steve555chuzzsss,I think it asking for the installation disk that you installed your kubuntu with.13:19
Alex135skii: in a command terminal13:20
skiicuz i did it for the search in kinfocenter and nothing came up where it say's keyword's nothing is shown in there and nothing is shown in results ither so i guess i'm gonna have to reinstall linux i guess13:20
skiioh ok13:20
skiii did and still the same damn thing WTF!!!!!!13:21
chuxxsssI use a update as I was away from home and now it asking for the alpha cd13:21
AccidusThanks, I'll look into it.13:21
XmasGhostskii: let's talk a bit about the window that you have in front of you13:21
skiiok13:21
XmasGhostskii: It should be splitted in two, the right part should have KDE's logo and a list of links13:22
XmasGhostskii: am I correct?13:22
skiii did type kinfocenter in the termial it did show up but still showed the same damn thing13:22
skiiyes13:24
XmasGhostOk..13:25
skiibut where it is splitted on the left side is blank on the right side has what i told u before13:25
XmasGhostskii: scroll down on the right..13:25
XmasGhostskii: can you see anywhere there a link that's named "memory"?13:26
skiii can't cuz there isn't a scroller13:26

Accidusxmasghost: Do I have to switch to compiz then?13:28
AccidusOr did I misunderstand your intention?13:28
skiion the right is the kde logo kde info center then it tell's me kde version: user, hostname, system, release, & machine13:29
skiii told u that is all that is up in kde info center13:29
skiiwtf13:29
XmasGhostAccidus: It was just from the top of my head.. I know that compiz has a way of setting window behavior13:29
AccidusAh, thanks.13:30
XmasGhostAccidus: There's probably several apps that you can use13:30
AccidusWell, I'll look into it, but that's probably not going to happen today.13:30
XmasGhostAccidus: try a google search for "window behavior whaterverxseveryouuse" :)13:30
AccidusReplacing the windowing system isn't something I planned :)13:30

Today I got it back because it didn't work in his Vista and the supplied driver-cd only had win95/98-drivers. Curious, I plugged it into my kubuntu desktop and a Guillemot usb device popped up so I could use it in TuxRacer. Vista fail again, but tuxracer isn't so hot either. So,19:36

ecopirateI'm having a problem running games and applications that are graphics intensive. It almost seems like a memory leak, though I know it's not. For nearly every game that I played, though most prevalently with online games, my framerate is absolute garbage. It begins adequate, usually around 30-40fps (Though this itself is nowhere near to what it was in windows, oddly), but then drops down to 6-9fps, or lower. This happens with new games,21:33

ecopirateSooo...I'll just post my problem then: I'm having a weird slowdown happen with all of the games I play and any graphically intensive program I use (Some random ones too). When I first start a game, I will get an "adeqate" 30 or so fps. Normally, in Windows, I would be running 60-70 fps for the same game. This is for programs run both in Linux itself and in Wine. Over the course of five minutes or so, however, the game will choke down to23:55
ecopirateabout 6-9 fps, and stay there until I quit. In addition, my computer itself seems to slow down after I exit the game, for a couple of minutes. The same happens with other programs as well, including ktorrent, of all things. System Specs: 2.2ghz dual core, 2 gigs of memory, GeForce 7400 Go, large virtual memory cache, and as far as I know, nvidia-glx installed23:55
mefisto__INIT_6: it seems nbc doesn't want linux users. you could try installing IE with ies4linux and see if that makes any difference23:57
arrrghhhecopirate, is linux ok w/o games?23:57
ecopiratearrrghhh: To a degree. Sometimes I'll get random slowdowns when using Firefox, or, as I mentioned, ktorrent. When I check sysguard, these programs seem to be taking an inordinate amount of memory. It happens with okular as well23:58
arrrghhhecopirate, are you running kde4?23:58
