[13:00] :( [13:01] how can i install kde 4 for testing but return to 3 anytime without destroying anything? [13:01] skii: the kmenu is like the start menu for kde [13:01] skii: it's the blue K that's on the task bar [13:01] Tim_: dont try it, i did it once and i had to reinstall everything because it messed up fonts in my gnome and KDE3 when i went back [13:01] yes i got that part [13:01] skii: if you click there you should have a list of menus [13:01] tim_: dont do it [13:01] skii: go to the one that says "system" [13:02] Alex135: ok^^ [13:02] skii: there click on the link that sayz "kinfocenter" [13:02] i found it [13:02] tim_: i would recomend instead makeing a VM and installing kubuntu kde4.1 on it [13:02] ok.. now you should be able to tell what's its ram and processor [13:02] hi all.. does anyone knows when Qt 4.4.1 packages will be available in hardy backports? [13:02] ok KDE version : 3.5.8 [13:02] ok i'll try that tzhx === aarre is now known as h [13:04] skii: if you click on the "memory" link it should tell you how much ram you have (I believe it says "physical memory" or something similar) === h is now known as Guest17735 [13:04] i put ram in the search and nothing [13:04] i can't there's nothing there [13:05] skii: then click on "processor" and look for "model name", that's where it will say what machine you have [13:05] skii: delete what you typed in the search field [13:05] i686 [13:06] skii: to the left a list containing things like "dma channels, devices, etc" should appear [13:06] skii: are you following me? [13:07] yes but there's a BIG problem, to the left there is NOTHING there but white then a devider then it say's kde info center and say's the kde version, user, hostname, system, release, & machine [13:07] that's all that i do see in KinfoCenter [13:07] skii: ok [13:08] skii: click where it says "memory" [13:08] In the taskbar: is it possible to change the order in which the windows appear? [13:10] i did & still nothing [13:10] this is really start'n to piss me off in which i don't want to have happen rite now [13:11] Accidus: I believe what you are looking for can be found under the desktop section of the kcontrol utility. Press alt-F2 and type "kcontrol" [13:11] Accidus: there you should find a Desktop section and you can adjust the Task Bar settings [13:11] Thanks, I'll look into it. [13:12] Okay. I know this menu [13:12] I want to be able to drag the windows in the taskbar and reorder them dynamically. Is that possible? [13:13] skii: when you say "nothing" what do you mean? did it not open a new section? [13:13] Accidus: what do you mean when you say "dynamically"? [13:13] For example, at the moment I'm working with Kate and KDvi [13:13] And I want them to be adjacent on the taskbar [13:14] when i say nothing i mean that nothing happend, nothing came up [13:14] But I can't drag and drop them together on the taskbar [13:14] And if I sort the taskbar alphabetically, they won't be next to each other either [13:15] Accidus: I see.. I'm not sure how that could be done, perhaps another one of these fine people will :) [13:16] Accidus: Sorry for not being of further help [13:16] Thanks, and don't sweat it. [13:17] It's nitpicking the desktop, so I won't be surprised if it's not even possible. [13:17] skii: let's try this.. close that window [13:17] skii: now press the keys ALT and F2 of your keyboard at the same time [13:17] Another related question: Is it possible to group several related windows under one window? For example, I'm always using Kate with Kdvi, so it would be great if I could "glue" them together, and minimize/maximize them together. [13:17] skii: it will prompt you for a command === joe_ is now known as skii [13:18] skii: there type in "kinfocenter" [13:18] srr about that i don't kow what happend [13:18] my kubuntu is asking for alpha 20080723.1 how do I fix this please anyone [13:19] where do i type that in? [13:19] Accidus: I'm thinking that that could be accomplished using compiz window rules [13:19] chuzzsss,I think it asking for the installation disk that you installed your kubuntu with. [13:20] skii: in a command terminal [13:20] cuz i did it for the search in kinfocenter and nothing came up where it say's keyword's nothing is shown in there and nothing is shown in results ither so i guess i'm gonna have to reinstall linux i guess [13:20] oh ok [13:21] i did and still the same damn thing WTF!!!!!! [13:21] I use a update as I was away from home and now it asking for the alpha cd [13:21] Thanks, I'll look into it. [13:21] skii: let's talk a bit about the window that you have in front of you [13:21] ok [13:22] skii: It should be splitted in two, the right part should have KDE's logo and a list of links [13:22] skii: am I correct? [13:22] i did type kinfocenter in the termial it did show up but still showed the same damn thing [13:24] yes [13:25] Ok.. [13:25] but where it is splitted on the left side is blank on the right side has what i told u before [13:25] skii: scroll down on the right.. [13:26] skii: can you see anywhere there a link that's named "memory"? [13:26] i can't cuz there isn't a scroller [13:26] does any one no how I can un-install a kubuntu update disc or point me in the right direction [13:26] skii: can you see anywhere there a link that's named "memory"? [13:26] no [13:27] i can't [13:27] there's nothing in the left side where i know that is soposto be [13:27] GGGRRR!!!!!!!!! [13:27] skii: on the right side... [13:27] my computer is really start'n to piss me off [13:27] skii: tell me what is listed [13:28] xmasghost: Do I have to switch to compiz then? [13:28] Or did I misunderstand your intention? [13:29] on the right is the kde logo kde info center then it tell's me kde version: user, hostname, system, release, & machine [13:29] i told u that is all that is up in kde info center [13:29] wtf [13:29] Accidus: It was just from the top of my head.. I know that compiz has a way of setting window behavior [13:30] Ah, thanks. [13:30] Accidus: There's probably several apps that you can use [13:30] Well, I'll look into it, but that's probably not going to happen today. [13:30] Accidus: try a google search for "window behavior whaterverxseveryouuse" :) [13:30] Replacing the windowing system isn't something I planned :) [13:30] Thanks, I will. [13:32] guys, I'm dying here... anyone know of a konsole command that can tell you your system's specs? [13:34] system specs? [13:34] what do you need? [23:55] Sooo...I'll just post my problem then: I'm having a weird slowdown happen with all of the games I play and any graphically intensive program I use (Some random ones too). When I first start a game, I will get an "adeqate" 30 or so fps. Normally, in Windows, I would be running 60-70 fps for the same game. This is for programs run both in Linux itself and in Wine. Over the course of five minutes or so, however, the game will choke down to [23:55] about 6-9 fps, and stay there until I quit. In addition, my computer itself seems to slow down after I exit the game, for a couple of minutes. The same happens with other programs as well, including ktorrent, of all things. System Specs: 2.2ghz dual core, 2 gigs of memory, GeForce 7400 Go, large virtual memory cache, and as far as I know, nvidia-glx installed [23:57] INIT_6: it seems nbc doesn't want linux users. you could try installing IE with ies4linux and see if that makes any difference [23:57] ecopirate, is linux ok w/o games? [23:58] arrrghhh: To a degree. Sometimes I'll get random slowdowns when using Firefox, or, as I mentioned, ktorrent. When I check sysguard, these programs seem to be taking an inordinate amount of memory. It happens with okular as well [23:58] ecopirate, are you running kde4? [23:58] arrrghhh: Yes, KDE4.1. [23:58] Question: I created a ResiserFS 160GB partition, installed, now i created a EXTRA 80GB ReiserFS partition how would i edit fstab to allow me to mount it with normal privledges?
