pteagueis there a way i can find out what's using the sound server? or at least a way i can restart it or something?00:01
KingOfDoswhy the ** is kubuntu changing my master volume after an apt-get update / apt-get upgrade?00:03
KingOfDosi was playing some music. and have 240watt boxes. so the whole house is now awake i'll guess.00:04
azizlol00:05
KingOfDosnormaly my mastervolume is at 5% or something00:05
Alex135hehe so not smart :P00:05
snarksterlol i have no idea but thats funny00:05
KingOfDosand it's 01:06 at night, great timing :D00:05
Alex135i blew my speakers out once trying something like that00:05
azizpteague: maybe $ alsa reload00:05
Alex135and my speakers can get LOUD!00:05
Alex135normal is at 45% for me00:06
SunStormdoes kubuntu have cdr labels?00:07
Alex135and my speakers are also set n 50%00:07
pteaguewoot! that did it... thanks :)  didn't want to have to reboot00:07
Alex135so i can boost my speakers up 400% of normal00:07
azizhey, is it possible to have the taskbar shown when an application flashes it's task button? for instance, when you receive a message in a kopete chat window, I want the hidden taskbar to come up...00:07
KingOfDosbut still. why would someone develop software with the "default volume" at 100%? he was out of coffee or something?00:09
SunStormare there cdrw labels available for download?00:10
azizanyone got an idea regarding taskbar+flashing? i was so used to this feature from my Windows times, would love to have it in KDE.00:11
Alex135KingOfDos: not sure.... but what would you do, set it to zero so people didn't know it worked?00:12
Alex135KingOfDos: atliest you know it works :P00:12
KingOfDostrue :D00:12
SunStormfound it00:13
KingOfDosi would set it to about 25 or 30% i'll guess. as default00:13
aaronwiis there a 64bit kubuntu for download somewhere?00:13
Alex135KingOfDos: it depends on the speakers, i have my speakers set at 50% with kubuntu volume set at 45% and its normal sould level00:13
Alex135sound*00:13
KingOfDosbut indeed. normal people have computer boxes of 2 watt RMS.00:14
KingOfDosnormal people dont have 240watt speakers and an ampfieler without a volume button i'll guess ;)00:14
axel_aaronwi: E.g.: http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/hardy/kubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso00:15
aaronwithankyou00:15
ahmoshi. does anyone know a good dictionary programme for translating words00:16
aaronwiwhen a new revision comes out, do I need to download a new installation cd or am i able to just run some sort of update?00:16
profoX-Akademysome sort of update00:16
aaronwik00:16
axel_aaronwi: Wich revision do you mena?00:17
aaronwiany00:17
aaronwilike in the future00:17
axel_aaronwi: 8.04 --> 8.04.1 is a regular update, nothing special.00:18
ahmoshi. does anyone know a good dictionary programme for translating words00:18
ahmosplz00:18
aaronwi well I mean larger updates like hardy gusty etc00:18
axel_aaronwi: 8.04 --> 8.10 is a so called "distribution update". That is a little bit more complcated / risky (make a backup of your /home-folders!)00:19
aaronwiok, but thats all available with the update program?00:19
axel_aaronwi: 8.04 --> 8.10 might be a little bit more complcated as the ather upGRADEs before as of the integration of KDE4.00:20
aaronwiive dabbled with ubuntu a bit, and mandriva, on and off, but never completely switched over from windows, but ive had it with the unstability, so I'm switching for good today lol00:20
axel_aaronwi: I don't know wether KDE4 will be the standard-desktop on 8.10.00:21
aaronwikde4 is pretty resource intensive tho isnt it?00:21
axel_aaronwi: The adept manager (K-Menue > System > Adept Manager) should inform you about distribution upgrades and do the upgrade.00:22
aaronwiok00:22
axel_aaronwi: It's actually the opposite. It should need less ressouctes. (As far as I'm informed.)00:22
aaronwiis there an easy way to migrate all my winxp stuff over, or should I just like set up wine for the windows partition?00:23
aaronwio ok00:23
aldois it possible to uninstall gnome??00:23
aaronwii was kinda associating beryl with kde400:23
axel_aaronwi: Little hint: upgrade to the next release about one or two week after it is published. In the first days there might be some trouble.00:24
aaronwik00:24
axel_aaronwi: you don't need Wine to read data from a NTFS-partition.00:24
aaronwik, but I still have some programs Id like to use00:25
axel_aaronwi: or do you mean things like ICQ-settings, Outlook-accounts, ...00:25
aaronwiya00:25
aaronwialtho half the stuff I use is opensouce anyways00:25
aaronwiim just kinda afraid if i move everything over to a linux partion and I screw it up id lose it all00:26
axel_aaronwi: Do you speak German? There is a great site about Ubuntu and stuff.00:26
aaronwiive screwed up linux distros quite a bit in the past hence the reason I never did a full switch over00:26
aaronwino i dont know german00:26
Alex135arronwi: if you want someone to guide you through the process i would be happy to help you00:27
axel_aaronwi: Backup. Then you don't have to fear the migration.00:27
aaronwik00:27
aaronwiwell,..I have 1.5 TB of stuff :S00:27
Alex135arronwi: holy crap why do you have so much!00:27
axel_aaronwi: External HDD.00:27
aaronwiI collect00:27
aaronwilol00:27
Alex135aaronwi: mythTV?00:28
aaronwinope00:28
aaronwilots and lots of torrents00:28
Alex135aaronwi: ROFLHAHAHAHAHAHA00:28
Alex135aaronwi: i find it funny cuz i have about 100GB that i have filled up just this summer of torrents00:28
aaronwiits like an addiction lol00:28
Alex135aaronwi: well now i know who to contact if i need storage space :P00:29
aaronwii have a 24/7 torrenting box too00:29
axel_aaronwi: backup is always a good idea. Just imagine a Lightning hitting your house.00:29
aaronwilol00:29
Alex135aaronwi: or if i need something :P00:29
aaronwiyup had that happen...one of these days i need a UPS00:29
axel_aaronwi: It depends on the lightning wether a USP helps. ;)00:30
Alex135UPS*00:30
aaronwilol...well i have surge protectors too...but our power usually goes out during any storm00:30
axel_Alex135: Ahem, yes.00:30
Alex135the most i have is a 315GB hdd, so 1.5TB is a lot00:31
aaronwilol00:32
axel_aaronwi: Well that would be far too risky for me. I can only give you the advise to make a backup of your data - at least of your most precious ones.00:32
aaronwii almost compusivly bought another TB00:32
aaronwithink I should go with raid?00:32
Alex135how much are they anyway?00:32
aaronwi80 bucks for a 500GB right now00:32
Alex135no a 1TB00:32
aaronwio00:32
aaronwium 140 or so00:32
Alex135ah00:33
Alex135cuz i just finished paying 340 for my new 24" screen00:33
aaronwiI usually get 500 or 400 gb drivs tho...cheaper if one dies00:33
axel_aaronwi: As far as I know there are external HDD-cases more than one HDD. 4-5 as I know - working in a RAID:00:33
Alex135ill probably go with a 500GB hdd then, i only need enough to back up my torrents and ISO's00:33
axel_aaronwi Alex135: Is it USD you are talking about?00:34
aaronwii think newegg has a western digital 16mb cache drive for around 80..good deal for good brand00:34
aaronwiyes USD00:34
Alex135axel_: yes00:34
TeslaTonyIs there a way to share my net connection from my main computer to another computer?00:35
Alex135TeslaTony: if you got twin ethernet ports or a Hub00:35
TeslaTonyI have a single ethernet port, but I´m running off WiFi00:36
aaronwiso do you guys think its a good idea to use kubuntu as my main os for a main linux computer, or should i go with ubuntu...i have more experiance with kde tho00:36
Alex135aaronwi: Kubuntu is the same as Ubuntu but with KDE instead of Gnome00:36
TeslaTonyaaronwi: Why choose? Use both00:36
axel_aaronwi: it depends.00:36
jeismaI just bought a basic webcam ic50c and installed cheese, but kubuntu doesn't see that the webcam is plugged in. How do I fix this?00:37
Alex135aaronwi: i use ubuntu with KDE installed so its (K) Ubuntu :P00:37
axel_TeslaTony: and the mess with the applications-/ K-Menue?00:37
aaronwilol00:37
aaronwihow do you switch back and forth then?00:37
TeslaTonyaxel_: The mess isn too bad00:37
Alex135aaronwi: login screen, but you dont need too00:37
aaronwiok00:37
aaronwiis kubuntu missing gnome then?00:38
Gutter_RatOk - here's the deal... I currently have an ATI 3100 in my machine and know that it sucks - all I can afford ATM is a slightly used nVidia 5200 and have it sitting on my desk.  My question is do I need to do anything special driver-wise or whatnot before removing the old card to keep kubuntu/kde from crapping itself with the new card, or is it a bit more robust than that and able to take the change in stride?00:38
axel_TeslaTony: for me bad enough.00:38
Alex135aaronwi: with both installed you can run both gnome and KDE apps00:38
Alex135aaronwi: yes00:38
Alex135aaronwi: i would install Ubuntu first then KDE (just cuz thats the way i have alwase done things00:38
Alex135aaronwi: never done the reverse00:38
TeslaTonyYou can use KDE apps in gnome without KDE00:38
aaronwiAlex135: ok, is it possible to then run a gnome app in kde, or would i have to switch first then?00:39
Alex135thats true but you still need the KDE libraries00:39
Alex135aaronwi: you can run a gnome app in KDE00:39
aaronwio ok cool00:39
aaronwinever knew that00:39
Alex135aaronwi: its because the gnome libraries are installed with gnome00:39
aaronwiso Im guessin all thats needed is the gnome libraries00:39
aaronwik00:39
Alex135aaronwi: yes00:40
axel_aaronwi: after installing Kubuntu is a "pure" KDE-Linux without Gnome. But you can install it if/ when you like.00:40
Alex135anyway brb, i gotta get my haircut...00:40
axel_aaronwi: When you install a gnome-app all reqired libraries etc. is automatically installed.00:40
nusakanHi. I need setting up a webcam and getting my computer to recognize my flash drives, which it did until recently.00:40
aaronwiok00:41
aaronwido I have to get 64 bit drivers for everything then too, with the 64 bit version, or would 32 bit drivers wrok too?00:41
axel_aaronwi: what about trying (K)Ubuntu with Wubi?00:42
axel_aaron#00:42
nessunohi00:42
aaronwiwhats wubi?00:42
axel_aaronwi: That's the problem with 64bit. You need special dirvers - as far as I know.00:42
axel_aaronwi: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors and scroll down to the bottom.00:43
aaronwik, its just that I have so much storage and 4gbs ram..I thought It would be required to use x6400:43
axel_aaronwi: I wouldn't say that's a requirement. It's an option.00:44
TeslaTony32bit can see 4 gigs00:44
TeslaTonySupposedly. Sometimes it works out that you can only see 3.500:44
axel_TeslaTony: But not one bit more.00:45
aaronwiwell I know its limited on windows00:45
pteaguebigmem on 32bit works *sometimes*00:45
aaronwiwell if i go with x64 am I going to have a harder time finding drivers for things?00:45
axel_aaronwi: I suppose so. It has been a while I last tried a 64bit-Ubuntu.00:46
Dr_willisI would stick with 32bit unless you know you NEED 64bit stuff00:46
Dr_willisif you have excatly 4 gb of ram.. you may or may not 'lose' a little bit of ram.00:47
axel_Dr_willis: ACK.00:47
nusakanCan someone help? I need setting up a webcam and getting my computer to recognize my flash drives, which it did until recently.00:47
Dr_willisso whats more imporntant - useing all the ram.. or flash and other 'media' stuff. :)00:47
axel_nusakan: Sorry, no Idea.00:47
pteaguei've not had any problems with 64bit other than needing to get 64bit versions of programs i'm using natively... wine works just fine00:47
aaronwiok...but it is all backwards compatible with 32bit progs then right?00:48
Dr_willisall it takes is one issue... and you run in to the 64 vs 32bit brick wall.. :)00:48
Dr_willisit is getting better all the time.. but i hear there are still issues.00:48
pteaguethat's true... i've got a 32bit & 64bit partitions using the same home directory... so if i run into a serious issue i can still flee back ;)00:49
aaronwiok00:49
aaronwihow bit of partion should i dedicate for kubuntu then?00:49
axel_aaronwi: ???00:50
aaronwinot counting the home dir00:50
axel_aaronwi: Use at least 3 partitions.00:50
ryryhmm00:50
aaronwiok...so what do I need then00:50
TeslaTonyThe only problem I had with 64bit when I used it was there is no 64bit flash. I use 32 bit now because there is nothing with Linux that I am capable of using that will benefit from the performance increas00:50
axel_aaronwi: one for "spwap", one for /home and one for the rest.00:50
aaronwia / dir...with ext3?00:50
aaronwinot dir partion*00:51
aaronwido I need a swap partion? since i have 4 gigs ram?00:51
axel_aaronwi: I'd say: yes.00:51
aaronwik00:52
aaronwihow big should that be00:52
axel_aaron: as a rule of thumb: double the ram.00:52
* Gutter_Rat always makes his swap partition equal to 1.5x physical ram - is this optimal or overkill?00:52
aaronwik00:53
pteaguei've got an old 80gb & a newer 500gb drive... the 80gb is split about 20gb winders, 29gb/29gb linux partitions, & 1.5gb swap i think... the 500 has a 1.5gb swap & the rest is /home... iirc00:53
aaronwido I need a home partition, or can I just put that in /00:53
axel_aaronwi: I'd recommend you using a home partition.00:53
pteaguedefinitely don't need that much, but i was being lazy00:53
aaronwilol k00:53
aaronwinow....will wine work fine with my FPS games? and what about steam00:54
axel_aaronwi: advantage: you can just "exchange" the root-partition and use your data again.00:54
axel_aaronwi: No Idea.00:55
aaronwiaxel_: o ok. so like a reinstall wont wipe everything, just overwrite?00:55
Dr_willisIve heard wine can work with steam  - but a lot depends on the game00:55
Dr_willisIts often a good idea to keep a /home partition seperate00:55
aaronwik00:55
pteaguedepends on the FPS, but i've not had issues with the games i play... usually wow, eve-online, ut2k400:55
aaronwiand should I use the ext3 filesystem then?00:56
pteaguei've played guildwars before, but not lately & not since i switched to 64bit00:56
Dr_willisyou got any reason to not use ext3?00:56
aaronwii dont know jack about what i should and shouldnt use00:56
Dr_willisThen use the defaults. :)00:56
aaronwik00:56
axel_aaronwi: In case of a reinstall you just loose the root-partition. The home-partition stays untouched. If you choose the same login name you can use the data on your home-partition as if nothing had happened.00:56
aaronwiok00:57
nusakanCan someone help? I need setting up a webcam and getting my computer to recognize my flash drives, which it did until recently.00:57
aaronwiby default does it even encrypt the home partition?00:57
Dr_willisaaronwi,  no it does not.00:57
aaronwik00:58
mase_worknusakan: we are all in here to help. Just let us know what your trying to do, what you have tried and what problems you are having. If someone knows how to help you they will.00:58
axel_aaronwi: Once I had installed Kubuntu, deleted it and installed OpenSuSe. I could work with my settings, E-Mails, etc as if I had always used openSuSe.00:58
aaronwiok, thanks, I'll brb00:58
axel_aaronwi: then you must use the alternate-CD.00:58
axel_aaronwi: for installing.00:58
axel_aaronwi: Or you encrypt it after the installation.00:59
nusakanI am trying to set up skype so I can talk to my parents at college. The software is installed, I just need to get the webcam working. Also recently, after formatting and mounting my new external hard drive, my laptop stopped recognizing my flash drives.01:00
=== mike is now known as pulaski
axel_nusakan: I don't know an answer but perhaps I can narrow the problem: Is the Kernel recognizing that a flash-drive is plugged in? (K-Menue > System > KSystemLog01:06
axel_nusakan: then in this program: protocol files (or similar, I'm using the German localization) > System protocoll.01:07
nusakanNothing that looks like System protocoll01:09
nusakanstuff changes when I plug/unplug it though01:09
nusakanin the system log i mean01:10
Alex135back01:10
aaronwiok im back01:13
Dr_willisI alwyas seem to end up just manually mounting stuff :)01:14
aaronwiso where do programs get installed when you use adept...or where are you supposed to install programs?01:14
Alex135aaronwi: it changes depending on the type of program01:14
Alex135aaronwi: files are spread all over01:14
Dr_willisaaronwi,  the parts  get installed to the system where they are supposed to go. :)01:14
Dr_willisthere is no 'Program Files' directory that everything 'tries' to go into01:14
aaronwiok01:14
Alex135aaronwi: ill show you, go into the start menu, then system, adept manager01:15
Dr_williseven under windows.. not everything gets installed to 'program files' :)01:15
aaronwiso if I have to do a reinstall i pretty much lose my programs01:15
aaronwiyes i realise that01:15
Alex135aaronwi: yea01:15
Dr_willisaaronwi,  unless you install specific apps into the users home directory.01:15
Alex135aaronwi: but it isn't that hard to reinstall stuff01:15
aaronwialex135: im not using kubuntu yet :P01:15
aaronwistill waiting on the download01:15
Alex135aaronwi: oh :P01:15
Alex135aaronwi: i can help you set it up, its quite nice to setup01:16
aaronwiok...but what about program preferences and etc01:16
Alex135aaronwi: KDE apps useually use a .kde folder in the home directory01:16
Alex135aaronwi: in the users home directory that is01:16
aaronwik01:16
Alex135aaronwi: deleat that file and everything resets to defaults, which can be usefull at times01:16
aaronwifor the program files or just the settings01:16
aaronwiok01:16
Alex135aaronwi: depends01:16
Dr_willisLinux is much more 'compartamentalized' :) then windows.01:17
Alex135aaronwi: default KDE apps use it as well as the settings are stored there01:17
Dr_willisSystem wide 'programs' are isntalled on the system...  user stuff goes in the users home dir.01:17
aaronwik01:18
aaronwilinux doesnt have any form of a useless 'registry' does it?01:18
Alex135aaronwi: not that i know of01:19
aaronwik thats good01:19
mase_workaaronwi: no not really. it does perform the same taks, in  adifferent way though01:19
Alex135aaronwi: i have never had to mess with one so far, and i have gone through billions of problems01:19
aaronwik01:19
aaronwishould I set up Raid before I start this install?01:19
mase_workaaronwi: each application will have a configuration file (usually in /etc) and if it has local settings they will go in a  . file usually in your home dir01:20
aaronwio ok01:20
mase_workaaronwi: are you running software raid, fake raid or hardware raid ?01:20
aaronwinever really knew what etc was for01:20
aaronwihardware raid is what I would probably use, since my bios supports it01:20
Alex135i just go exploring through the system folders, never do really memorisze where each one is01:20
aaronwievga 780i01:21
mase_workaaronwi: cool, then yeh set up your raid card to have the arrays you want01:21
mase_workthen do a normal install t01:21
aaronwithe most hardcore linux stuff ive probably done is mess with dd-wrt on my router01:21
Alex135aaronwi: you have a long road ahead of you then, hehe01:22
aaronwilol01:22
mase_workaaronwi: its pretty straight forward01:22
aaronwigood thing i wasnt scheduled to work all week :P01:22
mase_workkubuntu / linux isn't hard, its just different01:23
Alex135you will need to expand your comfort zone, and learn to work outside of it on a regular basis01:23
aaronwiwell I figure after all the years of trial and error, I cant learn too much more advanced things on windows, besides vista, but I will never use vista, so now its off to master linux lol01:23
Dr_willisLinux Tip #1 - 'learn to think, learn to learn' :)01:23
Dr_willisEventually you 'will' use vista.. thats the MS way. :)01:24
aaronwilol, naa01:24
aaronwiunless im forced to at a job01:24
Alex135the world will switch to linux before it will use vista01:24
aaronwieven then...thats what live disks are for :P01:24
Alex135it will switch something that they know will work,01:24
aaronwiyup01:24
aaronwior windows 701:24
Alex135i dont trust windows 701:24
aaronwior w/e number that new one is01:24
Alex135it will be too hardware demanding01:25
Alex135yes it is windows 701:25
aaronwik01:25
Alex135its suposed to have multiple desktops... they cant come up with anything origional01:25
aaronwiam i going to have to manually find linux dirver for my video card or will it automatically get them01:25
Alex135aaronwi: depends01:25
aaronwiim using a nvidia 8800gts dual display dvi to hdmi01:26
Alex135aaronwi: depends on the type and model of videocard, but it is almost certian with a bit of help it will work01:26
Alex135aaronwi: you wont know till you try it01:26
aaronwik01:26
Dr_willisnividia cards drivers are in the repos. :)01:26
Alex135aaronwi: no way to tell for sure01:26
Dr_willistakes me about 3 min ti get mine going.01:26
mase_workaaronwi: yeh it might be in the non free part of the repos01:26
Alex135aaronwi: even with the drivers you need to do some configuration sometimes to make it work01:26
Alex135mase_work: no they arn't in the non-free repos01:26
aaronwidoes nvidia have actual linux drivers, or are all drivers user made01:27
Alex135aaronwi: yes and no01:27
aaronwio01:27
Dr_willis!nvidia01:27
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto01:27
mase_workaaronwi: they make both closed and free drivers. The free drivers are 2d only though01:28
mase_workaaronwi: and they come with Xorg01:28
aaronwi:S need 3d01:28
Alex135aaronwi: you sometimes need to do some configuration to make hardware access work01:28
mase_workif you need 3d then you need the nonfree drivers either from apt or from nvidia.com01:28
aaronwiis xorg the display program01:28
mase_workaaronwi: roughly yes01:29
Alex135aaronwi: x11 is the display program01:29
Alex135aaronwi: xorg is part of it01:29
aaronwiok01:29
Alex135aaronwi: xorg.conf is the configuration file01:29
aaronwik01:29
aaronwii think im going to get my other computer up and running, so I can chat to make sure i dont screw this install up lol01:30
Alex135aaronwi: ill help walk you through it if you want01:30
aaronwisounds good01:30
Alex135aaronwi: im watching some of the videos i torrented, but i can multitask XD01:31
aaronwilol01:31
MusliHello!01:33
Alex135aaronwi: let me know when you are ready to start01:33
aaronwik01:33
Alex135aaronwi: is this gonna be a duel boot machine?01:33
aaronwii think itll be a half hour or so01:33

Dr_willisIf you want to use Linux and be 'very' safe. then Install virtualbox on windows. and use Linux Inside that.01:36
Alex135i wouldn't do it that way though, you cant alwase do as much01:36

Dr_willisThat way you can have Linux in a window. :) and still get here if you need.01:36

Dr_willisIt depends on what you are going to do.. virtualbox is a handy tool01:36

Gutter_Ratis it fairly safe to switch from an ATI card to an nVidia card without kubuntu/kde barfing all over itself?02:00
Alex135!cookie|Alex13502:00
ubottuAlex135, please see my private message02:00
Alex135aww crud02:00
DragnslcrGutter_Rat- you'll have to change the drivers and possibly edit the xorg.conf file (if the driver installer doesn't do it for you)02:01
Gutter_Ratbefore swapping cards. or after?02:01
DragnslcrGutter_Rat- it should be possible, but it may not be entirely painless02:01
resplinI'm trying to get ssh-agent to use gpg-agent. In Hardy it looks almost setup out of the box. I'm trying to figure out how to get it working without ruining the default setup.02:02
resplinAny ideas?02:02
resplinGutter_Rat: The system will boot, but you might not get video. I usually set sshd to start on bootup, then I can get to the config files to tweak them.02:03
Hydranthey all... anyone dual-booted Ubuntu with WinXP?  Which do I install first?  I assume Windoze, since GRUB can always be written back to the MBR02:03
Alex135Hydrant: i duel boot as a standard02:04
Alex135Hydrant: windows first02:04
Alex135Hydrant: need help?02:04
Hydrantalright... I haven't dual-booted for the past 7 years... setting up the gf's system02:04
Hydrantthanks for the offer... I'm just wiping out Vista (eewww) with sysresccd...02:05
Hydranthow do I force windows to use FAT?  If I wipe the partition it tries to stick me with NTFS02:05
HydrantJust create a fat partition, and let it reuse it?  I've had issues with Windows and FAT partitions marked by cfdisk before02:06
Alex135Hydrant: you really dont want fat 3202:06
Memory_MoronWhy bother?02:06
Memory_MoronI'd go NTFS Hydrant..02:06
Hydrantwhat do you mean?  Last I checked NTFS support with Linux was horribly broken02:07
Memory_MoronI use it painlessly everyday.02:07
Alex135Hydrant: you havn't checked in a while then02:07
HydrantNope :-(02:07
Memory_MoronI would use a shared fat partition for data, but you can do that in ntfs too for all it matters.02:07
HydrantI've been a Linux purist for a long time, I don't even know how to get an IP address with Windows02:07

Hydrantas in not at all... I'd rather it screwed itself up02:10
Dr_willisTechnically that windows tool is accessing it as ext202:10
Memory_MoronI wouldn't bother mounting either system partition in the other..02:10
Alex135Ext2 and 3 are mostly the same02:10
Memory_MoronI would have a seperate data partition accessed from both.02:10

I recently found my college laptop that i had back in 2001. it's a pretty weak system. i want to bring it back to life, but i really don't want to do much with it. mainly side programming projects, and sometimes burn cds. But it doesn't have a cd burner. How difficult will it be to replace the cd drive with one that can do what i want?07:10
flaccidchipbuddy: thats a hardware question, you should see about that elseware if you can easily get a new optical drive for it. you can also use an external one via usb or firewire as an option07:11

But they didn't have me put in the number of heads and cylinders. I did a man on it and saw that you can do that. I need to know if that would make a difference.17:52

deitarionJust so you know, I am familiar with console operations. I'm just not familiar with non-Gentoo distros.17:55
deitarionGive me a sec to try reinstalling kdm... but I do have one question. Is startkde normally broken on Kubuntu or does the kdm package somehow affect it? (on Gentoo, kdm has no effect on startkde)17:57

nlindbladHi!22:31
ctphi folks. would you recommend intrepid for daily use meantime? i wanna use kde 4.1 so i have to choose between hardy+kde4.1 packages vs intrepid22:31
jenzhi22:34
adz21cctp: I tried out intrepid a lil while ago, seemed ok i had no issues, but to be honest I avoid alpha issues, and still tend to be skeptical about beta a lot but if it has something i want i wont hesitate to use it. Only reason is i find it easier to get help for the current release than the aloha release, but when it turns beta u get more people interested and more people out there to help22:34
ctpadz21c, ok, so i'll try it. i think kde 4.1 is worth to try this step ;-)22:36
adz21cctp: well you get it in hardy with an update from ppa repo, so depends on ur needs really. For me at moment interpid isnt offering anything i need and i am running 4.1 ... i only tried it as i was hoping for a newer version of alsa but it still had same version of hardy at time so i converted back22:37

adz21cctp: same basic thing :-), but i did kubuntu22:43
ctpok22:43
ctpadz21c, all is working properly or do you have some trouble with 4.1?22:44
adz21cctp: you might find it easier to install onto something that doesn't already have kde4 installed as some package names changed which made a few dependency issues when installing, so when kde4 isn't there ... shouldn't happen22:44
adz21cctp: ummmm i can't think of any major issues22:44
adz21cctp: i don't have webcam with kopete i think, it can see webcam but i think its disabled on certain protocols, which i use it seems .. that can be annoying but i rarely use it so not major, and i can always install kopete-kde3 for when i really want it22:45
adz21cctp: ummmm, oh for some reason signing isn't working in kontact for me emails at mo .. which is weird as it worked in RC1, infact i double check that one now22:46
ctpadz21c, ok, so these are minor problems i can live with ;-)22:47
adz21cctp: yea it says bad passphrase without even asking me for it, but not like i am desperate to sign my emails or anything :-)22:47

richard__ign0ramus: --- no soundcards ---23:41
ign0ramusrichard__: well, thats your problem.  now, the solution...23:42
ign0ramusdid you upgrade kernels or make any hardware changes recently?23:42
richard__nope23:43
richard__sound was working fine23:43
richard__i was listening to some music, then I had some network problems, changed networks a few times and noticed sound had stopped working23:43
ign0ramusrichard__: this sounds like a very "windows-like" answer, but you can always try a reboot and see if HAL will recognize your card... that's q&d23:43

ign0ramusrichard__: someone with more expertise could probably give you a better response, but i've found the same thing happening to me, and rebooting will fix it.23:45
ign0ramusrichard__: it can't hurt23:45
richard__too true23:45
richard__thanks for your help23:45

TimSCan I play a .xvid video in kubuntu?23:46
ign0ramustims: have you tried?  if you have the proper codecs, i would say vlc should be able to.  just guessing, though.23:47
TimSKaffiene failed, Ill try VLC in a sec.23:47
ign0ramustims: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=244140&page=223:48
TimSOdd, Kaffeine works fine for other xvid videos.23:48
TimSBut with this one it tries to install codecs then tells me I have them.23:48
ign0ramustims: i would say that there's something messed up with the file, then.23:49

leneacan anyone help me? i how do i deactivate the drive check after an 'unclean shutdown'?23:51
favroI think the escape button does that23:54
leneafavro : nope, doesn't work. it'd be best not just to skip it, but to entirely deactivate it so it never pops up again23:55
TimSUninstall fdisk? Is that even possible or is it a kernel app?23:55
favroit is best to let it check the system - it is there for a reason23:56
TimSEsc is the skip key, I am sure of that much.23:57
leneafavro : the problem is one of my drives is ext2, so it always fails the drive check. so it pops up next reboot to. so basically each reboot i'm just wasting 5 minutes23:57
leneaTimS : i've tried escape countless times, no result23:57
