[00:29] Good evening, all. I'm having some problems getting compiz working with the latest version of xubuntu on an IBM T60 laptop. I'm running the restricted ATI accelerated driver and everything with compiz worked well until I rebooted. Now when I launch an application, the toolbar on the apps with the close/minimize buttons is not there at all. Also, whatever I launch appears at the top of the screen and abscures the Applications menu. As a result, I can [00:29] Can anyone offer any advice on either fixing this or disabling compiz to see if that resolves the problem? [00:30] !compiz | drlongghost [00:30] drlongghost: Compiz (compositing window manager) and XGL (X server architecture layered on top of OpenGL) - Howto at http://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager - help in #compiz-fusion [01:11] hi there, just installed konqueror, when i try to open home folder, or network folders, new tabs keep popping up, millions of them, only way to stop it, is by shutting it down......xubuntu 8.04, konqueror 4.0.5 [01:20] So I'm trying to install xubuntu on an old machine that has a crippled version of windows ME on it, and it's not working. I hit 'install' from the boot menu and it goes along until it loads the ubuntu orange background, and then it kind of just hangs from there. [01:20] So... not quite sure how to procede. I'm not adept enough with linux at all to try to do, like, a command-line installation or anything [01:22] Maybe someone can help? [01:24] are u booting from the CD? [01:25] Yeah [01:25] or starting ME and trying to install from within windows? [01:25] ME crashes on boot [01:25] so I'm trying to boot from the cd [01:25] This is another machine that's downstairs [01:26] hmm... maybe u could try burning another CD [01:26] ubuntu maybe [01:26] I used this particular CD of xubuntu on an old machine of mine [01:26] So I know the disk itself is good [01:26] oh [01:26] There's 256mb of ram in the machine I'm trying to install on now [01:27] Googling indicates there's an "Alternate CD" -- maybe that would work? [01:27] if its a driver or something thats conflicting, u might have better luck with aa different distro or diff version [01:29] I don't know if it's a driver conflict or the machine is just kind of old [01:30] It says I need 1.5 gigs of free HD space but I'm not sure if that's the case here. Is there a way to format the HD before it tries and fails to run live? [01:31] i found this article on lightweight distroes if u want to try something else: http://www.linux.com/feature/52134 [01:33] maybe I could try "damn small linux" [01:34] u could probly even use that to format the drive and try the xubuntu install again [01:34] boot into DSL from a thumbdrive [01:34] or CD [01:34] I can't get to any OS on the machine, though. Well, I think I got to a command line from the xubuntu disk, but I didn't know what to do [01:34] Shouldn've left my thumb drive at home [01:41] well, good luck to you [02:19] how do i get my sound card working? [02:25] DarkTan, it should already be working [02:26] well, when i did the install i didn't have net access, [02:28] DarkTan, I'll spank Xubuntu for you the next time I see him. He obviously hasn't been behaving. [02:28] o_0 [02:30] so, any idea who i can detect it? or install it? [02:31] hiw* [02:31] how* [06:09] hi [06:11] I was jsut wondering if anyone could help me === Zeeded__ is now known as ZEEDED === ZEEDED is now known as Zeeded [06:12] when I try to install I get this error: [06:12] Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt [06:12] anyone have any ideas? [06:43] Hello, I just installed Xubuntu and I was wondering about changing my default cursor. Whenever I try to change to another cursor, only select applications such as firefox will show the new mouse theme, while just about everything else will stay with DMZ-White. I know there is a workaround by editing the index.theme to the theme I want, but I was wondering if there was another way. [06:55] Insane1, you need to login and out to have it take full effect [06:59] cody-somerville: I've done so before, to little effect...the same situation occurs. I can give it another try right now, however. I'll be back in a moment. [07:02] cody-somerville: I'm back, and the same situation occurred again. DMZ-White is showing up with the Xfce desktop and most applications, save for a few. [07:02] How are you changing your cursor theme? [07:03] cody-somerville: At the moment I'm putting the cursor theme folder in a user-created .icons folder in my home directory. [07:03] And how are you updating, as in selecting which one you want to use [07:04] cody-somerville: Ah, dang. Sorry, I was gonna include that in my last statement, but forgot. I'm going to the menu, going to the settings manager, and changing the cursor theme through the mouse configuration. [07:04] Or "Mouse Preferences" [07:05] "Mouse Preferences"? [07:05] Can you take a screenshot? [07:06] cody-somerville: Sure. One moment... [07:07] I don't think that'll work [07:08] Please e-mail me instead: cody-somerville@ubuntu.com [07:08] cody-somerville: Alright. [07:13] cody-somerville: I sent the e-mail. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I included my partition setup. [07:14] Interesting theme :] [07:14] What version of Xubuntu are you running? [07:14] cody-somerville: Why thank you. :) It's an aurora GTK engine theme called "Lux". And I'm running Xubuntu 8.04.1 [07:15] This seems like a bug, I think. [07:17] cody-somerville: I had seen a bug posted about a similar bug in Xubuntu Gutsy, but was unsure if that was a unique situation or also applied to me. I HAD heard someone mention at one point about changing the link index.theme in /usr/share/icons/default, but didn't know what they meant. If I have to, I guess I'll just change the index.theme file for now. :) [07:18] hmmm... [07:18] What does it say right now? [07:19] The index.theme file? Let me go get it opened again with mousepad. [07:20] /usr/share/icons/default's first line is "[Icon Theme]", and the second line is "Inherits=DMZ-White". [07:22] Before, changing the "DMZ-White" allowed me to change the theme. [07:24] cody-somerville: * [07:25] My file is the same [07:26] cody-somerville: I believe that file actually determines the default cursor to fall back on, whcih is why when I changed it in one case, my cursor theme appeared at the GDM logon screen. [07:28] Hmmm...I'm going to brb once more to try something. [07:30] Insane1, I'm going to head to bed. I'll be on later :-) [07:31] cody-somerville: Alright, I'll talk to you later. :P I'll just change my index.theme file for now. No biggie for me actually. I was curious though. XD [07:31] me too [07:37] hi [07:38] my xubuntu is running well some how slow root is using 59% of cpu usage all the time ands ewen opening firefox makes cpu usage go to 100% [10:26] dok [12:04] Is there a reason that in *all* ubuntu distributions that the mouse pointer will freeze *at random* especially when java program is running; it freezes so that it sticks in one place, is unmoveable, (I don't even know how to restart the mouse, and I'd like to figure out cause then I would just keep a command window open all the time so I can restart mouse) [12:05] and if this is an error, or something due to my system, will someone help me fix this problem [12:05] using XFCE4 and Compiz [12:07] I'd guess that would be an issue to do with compiz - ask in #compiz [12:07] I have the problem when I run xfce4 on it's own also (will I have to ask on #xfce4?) [12:08] "using XFCE4 and Compiz" - suggested compiz to me - how fast is your comp cpu-wise? [12:09] 2.2 GHZ Athlon X2 64 4200+ Socket 939 [12:10] I should have said "using Xfce4 or Xfce4 and Compiz" [12:10] when the mouse freezes is the rest of the desktop frozen as well? [12:10] no [12:11] everything else will work fine (clicking on stuff fails but I've managed to have command windows open every once in a while on freezes so I just type in it for a while) [12:13] what does the mouse section in xorg.conf look like? [12:16] feel free to give answers while I'm away for breakfast [12:17] next time it happens unplug the mouse and plug it back in to see if that gets it going again [12:25] ok [12:25] it's a usb mouse [12:25] and if that doesn't work, what command can I run? [12:27] I'm looking for that - not a common request :) [12:28] oh ok......... So I guess I just have problems; well thanks so much for looking (and the previous answers) [12:30] lmartin92: it is an x issue - do you have your drivers installed for the graphics card? [12:31] nvidia [12:32] yes (6100, old card) [12:32] and what have you got in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for your mouse? [12:33] wait a sec and I'll paste (somewhere depending on how long it is) [12:33] !paste [12:33] pastebin is a service to post multiple-lined texts so you don't flood the channel. The Ubuntu pastebin is at http://paste.ubuntu.com (make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic) [12:34] http://paste.ubuntu.com/37946/ [12:35] do you want the entire xorg.conf (about 20 or less lines from the looks of it, it's not a long extensive one) [12:36] no just the mouse stuff for now [12:36] ok [12:37] http://paste.ubuntu.com/37947/ is mine - the line with device is important [12:39] did you manually configure yours? [12:40] no - it's a backed up one from gutsy [12:40] mine is a hardy install, automagically configured [12:41] I have had issues with x in hardy - and am glad I make backups :) [12:41] yeh but sometimes the automagic isn't so magical... [12:42] I have a gateway mouse, (came with my computer), and I don't know any special things about it that will make me need to add to my xorg.conf; are you suggesting that I inherit your mouse configuration (minus the 3 button emulation because I already have a scroll button on my mouse)? [12:43] at least add the option device /dev/input/mice line [12:43] ok........ I don't know anything about ZAxisMapping, and I don't think I'd have to use your Explorer* because it deals with PS2 and I have a usb mouse [12:44] mine is a usb mouse - that doesn't seem to matter [12:44] ok [12:45] I've edited......... I'm fixing to restart xserver [12:45] k - luck :) [12:46] do you happen to know the command off hand? [12:47] to restart? [12:47] yes [12:47] just the X server....... not the entire comptuer [12:47] sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart - close all apps first :) [12:47] ok [12:47] be right back then [12:47] :) [12:50] back [12:50] it works....... I'll let you know if it fails (I'm going to jiggle the mouse around for 15 minutes at high speed to see if it works, I could kill the old config with this) [12:51] hehe [12:52] 15 minutes was kind of an exaggeration..... more like 5 [12:55] seems to work...... thanks favro :-) [12:55] if it stops again just unplug it :) [12:55] I will === lmartin92 is now known as lmartin92isAFK === PriceChild is now known as to === to is now known as PriceChild === lmartin92isAFK is now known as lmartin92 === neozen-work is now known as neozen === lmartin92 is now known as lmartin92isAFK [16:44] im having an issue with wpa and my wireless card, netgear511t. basically, /etc/network/interfaces doesn't retain the psk or wpa-proto WPA2 info when I restart and reverts back to WPA. i have to manually enter the info, reboot to connect to my network. [16:45] also, wpa-driver reverts back to wext instead of madwifi [16:49] ERICH_lap: I'm not sure. I don't have much experience with that card, and have been using network manager lately to manage the network interfaces. [16:49] ERICH_lap: You could try the #ubuntu channel. [17:02] I beg you [17:17] Hi, how do I mount a samba share in xubuntu? === hfsdo_ is now known as hfsdo [17:41] bal: in a terminal use smbmount then you can browse it with thunar where you mount it. [20:19] was anyone on here when I discussed mouse problem with favro [20:19] my mouse failed a minute ago [20:19] and unplugging and replugging failed [20:19] so now I want a solution (that doesn't require restarting gdm) [20:25] on top of my previous problem list, trying to mount an sd card no longer works! Why not, the thunar filemanager fails to mount it, and so does the mount command in a terminal (it freezes on try mount) [20:28] forget it, I'm just going to update then restart and hope it works [20:33] still have the freaking mouse problem to fix, SD card works now [20:33] will someone help me fix my mouse problem? [22:10] Sia0-0: it will work, but it's better to use apt-get or synaptic, aptitude keeps a separate database of which packages were installed manually, and that makes it harder to uninstall metapackages [22:10] Sia0-0: it's not xfce-goodies, it's xubuntu-desktop [22:10] TheSheep, aha ok thanx [22:11] Sia0-0: of course, you can also install the single packages from xfce, if you do not wish to have full xubuntu [22:12] realy u hate gui [22:12] :) [22:12] no, but I hate people who don't take the time to spell "you" correctly :) [22:12] but will install a compact and user freindly gui for my childern [22:13] srry TheSheep *really i hate GUI ;) [22:14] but xubuntu is better and very compact [22:14] thanx again [22:14] and have nice time [22:15] good luck with your gui :) [23:19] i need some help installing my sound card [23:19] I didn't have internet when i did the instll [23:22] probe alsaconf [23:23] what that for me or someone else?
